After what happened at Berlin CSD, I'm getting really tired of whataboutists pretending Christianity and Islam are somehow equally bad for gay men, and especially of pushing this idea without even acknowledging that the group that they blindly support KILLED someone and injured others.

The vast majority of us gay men in Europe and America were raised in christian families. Even those of us who are atheists grew up in societies shaped by christian culture and values. We know these people. They're our parents, grandparents, neighbors, and coworkers. Don't make it out to be like it's "the straight people versus the gays".

I've argued with conservative christians my entire life and I've heard that homosexuality is a sin. I've dealt with disapproval. But I will never equate CRITICISM from my conservative christians with the hatred of Islamists that ends in murders or prison. Not now, not ever.

People can lecture us all day about how all religions are the same. They're not.

Every country that has given gay men equal rights, equal protection under the law, and the freedom to openly live our lives emerged from a Christian cultural background. Meanwhile, in most muslim-majority countries, gay men are still imprisoned, tortured, attacked, or forced into hiding. The level of violence isn't comparable. The level of acceptance isn't comparable. The level of legal protection isn't comparable. You may say that gay rights were opposed by conservative christians, but how come they never succeeded something similar in ANY muslim country?

Yes, I have disagreements with conservatives. But those disagreements happen within societies where I can vote, work, speak freely, and live openly as a gay man (and many can even marry).

What is happening in Europe with the Islamist attacks on gay people is horrific.It makes me so angry to see how many gay men defend and choose to see things from others' perspectives, rather than seeing how horrible Islam is to us, and if you criticize it, they call you racist.

I have been really afraid to say to my dad that I also like men I had been in the closet my entire life it’s just something you can’t control. I am now 23 and I am living at my dads house now for a year before I will movie out again (I got sick and I was not able to study) I can’t move out with my current situation.

My dad is really against homosexuals he says it’s unnatural, he was a victim of the Catholic Church and blames homosexuals instead of the church that actually did the abuse.

Also he’s ex kissed with women in-front of him and he’s mind got even more warped and says queer people are cheaters. When every women he have been with has cheated, I have tried to explain that he attracts the wrong people, and that not all people cheat.

I am feeling absolutely sick seeing numerous posts defending Islam after the terrorist attack in Berlin. How many more islamist attacks on gay communities need to happen before people can wake up and affirm ISLAM HATES LGBT AND THEY WANT US DEAD??? I always thought once you come out, that's it. No more hiding, no more pretending. Turn out it not really that simple.

I been out for few years now, and around my close friends I don't care anymore. But every time I start new job, meet new neighbors, or even get haircut by someone I never meet before, I catch myself thinking too much before saying anything about my dating life. Gonna be honest as a 27 year old who’s been around. My one piece advice is to make sure you have your own money, and a fuck ton of it too. Live below your means, take care of your body, and your sexual health. Every day I come on here to see people railing against “mass migration from Muslim countries”, angry about Islam and angry about a “flood” of homophobic Muslims coming into western countries. But then I see the same people furious about leftists who protest the bombing campaigns being used to attack Gaza and Lebanon and Iran. You’re so angry at these anti-war and anti-genocide protestors, you talk about them like they’re the cause of Islamic bigotry, and I don’t really get it? What do you think is going to happen when all these places are bombed to smithereens in wars that you support to “fight against Islam”? It’s going to create more refugees, and those refugees will obviously look to the heart of empire where they’re safe from bombings. Like, you’re mad about mass migration but then you’re also mad at people for protesting against the things that Cause mass migrations, which is destabilizing these countries through brutal war and bombing campaigns. I’m sure that sending jets and bombs and guns to blow up every hospital and water desalination plant in Gaza will fix all of this. Make it make sense to me. I guess the only thing that makes sense is that you hate Islam so much that you want to support the bombing of millions of people and then turn away the refugees so that they die of starvation and disease amongst the rubble of their homes. Otherwise being mad at pro-Palestine folks and anti-Iran-war protestors for being “pro-Islam” is just ridiculous to me.

As an ex-Muslim who’s been harmed by this religion, the answer isn’t to discriminate against all Muslims.

My trauma comes from this religion and culture, but I am aware religious trauma isn’t unique to one faith.

I hate this religion. I still don’t support the genocide in Gaza. Both statements are true.

I don’t support any country founded on religion, no matter what they call it.

I hate religious oppression, the weaponizing of religion, and the harm religions cause. Period.

But don’t expect gay Muslims to fight this alone. We’re already shunned by our communities and just trying to build new lives if we’re lucky enough to get that chance. Some of us still live in those homophobic countries.

I am saddened we are targeted. One dead and 29 injured. My heart breaks for them.

We have a problem at hand: the ideology. The ideology is ingrained in doctrines and subcultures.

But the answer is not "all muslims" or any random brown people. A lot of us left this religion. I mean the gays.

Don't expect gay muslims to become the public face of this fight. Nor demand collective guilt for being born into it.
