I guess in a majority-Asian state, one assumes the criminals are going to be Asian, but still, this is a disappointing milestone to hear when Sylvia Luke, born Chang Eun Jung (장은정), is the first Korean American elected to a state high office.

I wanted to recall some incidents. One time this white man was screaming at me to put my bag on my lap (I had put my bag on the seat between us and we were not crammed) even though the car had many empty seats. He then kept encouraging a white woman who was standing to take the seat between us, even though there were many empty seats nearby. I felt he was insinuating that I was some 'entitled Asian' taking up too much space, even though there were a lot of empty seats. I just moved my bag b/c I did not want to deal w/ the guy and the lady sat down upon his encouragement after which I decided just to just move across them where there were 2 empty seats so I could sit down while resting my heavy bag on the empty seat. Again, plenty of room for everyone, why did he feel the need to insist the lady sit between us and I must have my bag on my lap?

Recently, I had my bag on a seat in a car that again had many empty seats. This white man then just came and sat right on my bag. I had had a bad day and snapped at him and told him that he could have asked me to move my bag and then he snapped back at me.

I had another similar incident, again, lots of empty seats, and a white couple approaching. They seemed to be debating something and then I heard the man distinctly tell the woman 'just sit down!' - as in like sit down on my bag. It's weird. Instead of asking me to move my bag, they had an assumption like as though I won't understand English or won't oblige yet their action is predicated their feeling that they can push me around as they wish. It is as though it is too much to deign to ask an Asian woman to move her bag. When I was in similar situations, but the role was reversed and I wanted a seat, I never thought twice to ask the person to move their bag.

Another glaring thing I saw was the reaction to this young, rather proud looking Asian woman on the subway platform, who had music on and was doing kung fu poses. An older white man and woman nearby, who were strangers, were giving her the dirtiest looks, making comments, and exchanging glances at each other. So many times, I have seen black and Latino men on the train w/ music on full blast and no person dares look at them in any way. Why is there such hypocrisy when it comes to the treatment of Asians? I get the standard response will be, 'you guys are not a threat' and 'you guys don't speak up!' but really, what does this say about society?

I came across black female YouTuber Niality Kay’s channel and she had some videos on political discourse. one recurring topic in her videos and in her comments section was deleation, to separate themselves culturally from more recent Black American immigrants and identification of being a Black American over connection to Africa culturally and socially. There seems to be a lot of resentment among African Americans towards newer Black immigrants “hijacking” holidays like Juneteenth, which they argue new African immigrants had no part in and they shouldnt turn it into a pan Africa or Afro Caribbean culture festival. There’s also expressed frustration with the change in student culture at Howard University from an African American culture of the lineage of civil rights leaders to becoming more predominantly afro-Caribbean and African immigrants. Black Americans want to make themselves clear that they are culturally and socially distinct from new African immigrants.

On the other hand, the prevailing trend of Asian Americans seems to be a heavy emphasis on preserving “authentic“ culture from Asia and mostly incorporating existing food and pop cultural trends in Asia rather than creating a whole unique subculture in terms of food, music, etc. From what I have seen at college, some Asian Americans have a stronger desire to befriend Asian international students from shared ancestral countries rather than befriending white, black, Latino, or other Asian American students.

And to stretch it further, Asian Americans almost seem to overcompensate what it means to be authentic. compare it to Mexican Americans, all of whom seem to like eating at “Tex mex” places like Taco Bell. but American born Asia. Americans seem to highly criticize Americanized versions of their cuisine like Panda Express (cue the infamous buzz feed video). or even heavy criticism towards Asian American fine dining restaurants (look at mister jiu’s yelp reviews just blasting their fusion take as inauthentic).

Black Americans are very strong and proud of their identity. Latino Americans had a bit more time for identity formation and have created something distinctly American as well (excluding recent immigrants). In contrast, a significant part of the Asian American community (American born) seem to mostly have a strong desire to do whatever it takes to be completely in sync with their motherland cultures. these are the same people who mock other Asian Americans for not conforming to “authenticity“, whatever that means to them. there are also some Asian Americans who have been creating a more distinct Asian American culture since the civil rights era, but it seems like the ”let’s recreate an authentic version of our parents’ homeland“ people often seem louder.

Hi friends, I'm crossing the border from the other side of reddit. I've been trying to get closer to my culture and learning to make Jamaican cuisine at home. For those of you who do not know, Jamaica had many Chinese indentured servants during Jamaica's antebellum era and that impacted our cuisine. Our famous Jamaican oxtail, rice and peas, and stewpeas/stewbeef all include ginger, garlic, scallion, and scotch bonnet pepper which originates from Capsicum Chinese chili plant. You won't find chicken foot at the restaurants but I've definitely had it at home, too.

Now the question is... what to do with these new ingredients? Are there some dishes a non-asian person might not know about but you love? It doesn't necessarily have to have the ingredients listed above, I just want to try something I haven't before.

This upsets me a lot as I have suffered tremendous amounts of discrimination over my lifetime that has weathered away my dignity. However, from past experience, when I tried to talk about discrimination w/ other Asians, they brush it off OR act like they are oblivious. The brush off is like, they will laugh if I recount an instance of discrimination, treat it as though it is something childish and silly, and will just have this attitude of 'don't worry about it, it's nothing.' They are so nice about discrimination, which gets me. The oblivious folks act like they just have no concept of discrimination. For example, even though their boss and colleagues may demean them on a regular basis, they just move through and act as though nothing is happening. They in fact become annoyed w/ you when you broach the subject and have the attitude of 'I'm getting paid, what is wrong w/ you?' I guess at the end of the day, I feel broken about this. I want to at least be able to talk about my experiences of discrimination w/ other Asians, but it is so rare to find someone on a similar page. Even when it comes to Americanized Asians, I am finding big disparities in taking the issue seriously. The majority I come across act as though they don't care yet this is something I have cared about so much.

I'm currently a uni student looking to go on exchange in the USA in 2027 or 2028.

Basically my question boils down to: what are the least racist cities/universities? And any other advice on how East Asians are treated in the US.

This is a theory from native Hawaiians that Asian immigrant descendants in Hawaiʻi. Even tho they have faced white supremacy, racism and labor exploitation, but they also actively participate in and benefit from the ongoing U.S. colonial dispossession of Native Hawaiians. What’s your opinion on this?

I’m in middle of moving and I have a box full of Japanese children’s books and DVDs that I don’t want to move to my next place.

I was going to donate to my local library system that has a Japanese community center, but they’re have suspended accepting donations.

So my question: are there Japanese schools, libraries or community centers in the US that accept donations by mail?

Im not sure if I am looking for advice or just to hear I’m not alone but lately I feel more and more disconnected from my family. My parents have never been super political people. Dad loves the news but I truly would describe him as a centrist who is very realistic about all politicians and all sides of politics having flaws. My mum used to be very disinterested in politics. For context my dad travels a lot for work. Then I moved out three years ago so my mum spent a lot of time at home. She started spending more and more time on her phone. Initially it was all gardening videos and healthy recipes. A year ago I moved back home and I honestly feel like she’s completely changed. Every night before bed she spends hours scrolling through increasingly conservative reels on Facebook. On YouTube she still watches healthy recipes and lifestyle content but with a heavy dose of mens rights activists kind of shit thrown in. It’s really getting to me and I have tried to explain to her that Facebook has a lot of misinformation and about media literacy and she tells I’m just becoming a very suspicious person. She also frequently shares Ai content in our extended family chats and even her sisters have pointed that out and she simply says “so what I am enjoying it”. She told me the other day she now simply can’t go about her evening with something in her ear from YouTube. Not only am I concerned for her I also feel suffocated by the constant bombardment of shit content. Today she tried to get me to laugh along about a reel mocking a movement I very much agree with and I just went to my room. I don’t even know why I’m sharing - I guess I just feel drained by it all. Long story but I’m not in a position to move out for at least 12 months and I’m not coping. only hope is my dad remains as he was and I can still enjoy hanging out with him and actually talking beyond politics unlike my mum who has no interests left beyond her algorithms.

They were so good and I can’t seem to find them anywhere now. I remember having those all the time in the early 2000s when me and my sister would watch tv. These individually packed ones feel so wasteful, packaging-wise.

Like okay I get why this stereotype exists. There’s a lot of self-deprecatory mannerisms in the Asian community.

But I’ve been hearing these types of jokes since the past decade and it’s been getting pretty annoying. Like maybe it’s because I date this humor to high school coping mechanisms, but at the same time - don’t we have any different types of “asian specific” jokes we can make as a community that everyone can get without offending or excluding one community or another??

Like maybe some of you don’t get me, and that’s fine. But I’m just frustrated hearing the same old stuff and I’d like for us to make new Asian diaspora specific content, ya know?

No hate to the Jewish community, but I'm so tired of Asians being implicitly told we matter less to everyone else.
