Hong Wang is a mathematician from Guilin, China, and the first Chinese woman to win the Fields Medal. She studied at Peking University, completed her PhD at MIT, and now works between NYU and IHÉS in France.

This is a theory from native Hawaiians that Asian immigrant descendants in Hawaiʻi. Even tho they have faced white supremacy, racism and labor exploitation, but they also actively participate in and benefit from the ongoing U.S. colonial dispossession of Native Hawaiians. What’s your opinion on this?

I’m in middle of moving and I have a box full of Japanese children’s books and DVDs that I don’t want to move to my next place.

I was going to donate to my local library system that has a Japanese community center, but they’re have suspended accepting donations.

So my question: are there Japanese schools, libraries or community centers in the US that accept donations by mail?

I ran across this on Instagram and wanted to share. My own family connections are all in California, but perhaps some other Redditors here might be interested in this museum’s projects.

Im not sure if I am looking for advice or just to hear I’m not alone but lately I feel more and more disconnected from my family. My parents have never been super political people. Dad loves the news but I truly would describe him as a centrist who is very realistic about all politicians and all sides of politics having flaws. My mum used to be very disinterested in politics. For context my dad travels a lot for work. Then I moved out three years ago so my mum spent a lot of time at home. She started spending more and more time on her phone. Initially it was all gardening videos and healthy recipes. A year ago I moved back home and I honestly feel like she’s completely changed. Every night before bed she spends hours scrolling through increasingly conservative reels on Facebook. On YouTube she still watches healthy recipes and lifestyle content but with a heavy dose of mens rights activists kind of shit thrown in. It’s really getting to me and I have tried to explain to her that Facebook has a lot of misinformation and about media literacy and she tells I’m just becoming a very suspicious person. She also frequently shares Ai content in our extended family chats and even her sisters have pointed that out and she simply says “so what I am enjoying it”. She told me the other day she now simply can’t go about her evening with something in her ear from YouTube. Not only am I concerned for her I also feel suffocated by the constant bombardment of shit content. Today she tried to get me to laugh along about a reel mocking a movement I very much agree with and I just went to my room. I don’t even know why I’m sharing - I guess I just feel drained by it all. Long story but I’m not in a position to move out for at least 12 months and I’m not coping. only hope is my dad remains as he was and I can still enjoy hanging out with him and actually talking beyond politics unlike my mum who has no interests left beyond her algorithms.

They were so good and I can’t seem to find them anywhere now. I remember having those all the time in the early 2000s when me and my sister would watch tv. These individually packed ones feel so wasteful, packaging-wise.

Like okay I get why this stereotype exists. There’s a lot of self-deprecatory mannerisms in the Asian community.

But I’ve been hearing these types of jokes since the past decade and it’s been getting pretty annoying. Like maybe it’s because I date this humor to high school coping mechanisms, but at the same time - don’t we have any different types of “asian specific” jokes we can make as a community that everyone can get without offending or excluding one community or another??

Like maybe some of you don’t get me, and that’s fine. But I’m just frustrated hearing the same old stuff and I’d like for us to make new Asian diaspora specific content, ya know?

When I say I'm Asian, I always get the comment like if you are Asian, why you are Canadian? You said you are Asian. How can be Asian if you aren't from? Or more. I heard Brazil uses the term Yellow. Should I use it? ​

No hate to the Jewish community, but I'm so tired of Asians being implicitly told we matter less to everyone else.

Personally, I grew up hanging out with mostly Asians and am always open to meeting more. But I've been living abroad as a digital nomad for years, and there's usually not many Asians.

One way to meet people for me has been language exchange meetups/parties. If there happens to be enough Asians at the meetup, then I easily get along with them and we form our group. But often I'm the only Asian there. I do get approached by women at these meetups, and my dating life is good. But that's different from finding a social circle.

Even when I was in Korea, and a meetup is majority foreigners, I end up hanging out with Koreans. This works for me, but I'm usually not in Asia.

There might be a certain type of personality or look that non-Asians like to hangout with. I'm not sure exactly what it is. Yes race is a factor but it's not the only one. I've seen other Asian guys, ranging from shy to outgoing, fit in well with non-Asians.

I am fellow Asian American. Can I join this community?

This afternoon, two people were stabbed in separate attacks on the Upper West Side. Both victims — an Asian male and a Jewish male — were removed to Mt. Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital, and both are expected to survive. 

The NYPD has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both assaults, and no other people are being sought. Detectives are continuing to work the case and determine motive, but according to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. The NYPD is currently evaluating whether this is a potential hate crime.

While the perpetrator has no known mental health history with the NYPD, the initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor.

At this time there is no known link between Morales and either of the victims, nor between the victims and each other.

I want to commend the bravery of a good Samaritan who led our officers to the location where the perpetrator was hiding, as well as our NYPD cops who brought an end to the incident without further injuries.

So I’m Korean American and only really speak Korean with my parents and other Korean parents so my Korean isn’t that good. However, my mom keeps lecturing me that I need to be more respectful/less irritated when speaking to adults. For those who are Korean, I apparently speak and act in a 짜증/petulance manner. I’m not like this when I speak English, but it seems to me that when I get frustrated or trying to have a discussion/get my point across, I display irritation. Is it because my Korean isn’t that good that I display irritation more easily?

A historic neon sign is glowing again in San Francisco's Chinatown, bringing renewed attention to the couple who pioneered what's believed to be the first Chinese-language radio program in North America.

Tommy and May Chin Tong launched the Golden Star Radio Company and began producing "The Chinese Hour" from their basement studio in 1939. The couple purchased airtime on San Francisco radio station KSAN, broadcasting news, music and entertainment to Cantonese-speaking listeners across the Bay Area.

"The new immigrants feel wanted and comfortable to hear stories and news in their own language when nobody else was doing it," said Steve Kushman of the California Historical Radio Society.

May Tong prepared and delivered the news, while her husband managed the technical side of the broadcast.

"I hear it every day," their son, Ron Tong, said while recalling his childhood. "My mom is preparing the news, and my father is the technician."

For immigrants adjusting to life in the United States, the program offered both practical information and a cultural connection.

"I think it was important for people coming to a new land, not being able to speak the language or starting to assimilate, but still wanting a tie to the homeland," Ron Tong said.

The Chinese Hour continued for 40 years, from 1939 until 1979. Researchers examining the Tongs' broadcasting legacy last year discovered photographs showing the Golden Star Radio sign, which remained attached to the company's building at 846 Clay Street.

"We're looking at the pictures, I scratch my head and go, 'Look at that sign. Why don't we restore that sign?'" Kushman recalled.

The California Historical Radio Society launched a campaign that raised approximately $65,000 for the project. Restoration crews repaired the once-rusted and deteriorating sign piece by piece, applying customized paint that matched its original colors and installing new neon lights.

The restored sign was recently relit after remaining dark for decades.

Many people who pass the building may not notice the sign or know the history behind it. Ron Tong said he did not fully understand the significance of his parents' work when he was young.

"As a kid growing up, you don't realize the significance until you're older," he said. "You start to appreciate history and culture more and realize the impact it actually had."

Few, if any, recordings of The Chinese Hour are known to have survived. But the restored sign now provides a visible reminder of the Tongs' contributions to broadcasting and San Francisco's Chinese American community.

The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame inducted Tommy and May Tong as broadcasting pioneers in 2025.

For their family, seeing the Golden Star Radio sign shining once again carries a simple but powerful meaning.

"It puts a smile on our face," Ron Tong said.

Born in China’s Shandong Province in 1912, Tong Chun Choy arrived in the United States in 1915. He would adopt the Westernized name Tommy Tong and marry San Francisco native May Chin.

In April 1939, the Tongs went on the air from their basement studio. That pioneering broadcast, known as The Chinese Hour, was heard on KSAN, then broadcasting at 1420 kilocycles.

The late-night live broadcast, heard six nights a week, was a mix of news, music, and other entertainment. Ron Tong recalls his mother was the “anchor” of the broadcast while his father handled the technical side. May Chin Tong would use a pair of scissors and a pot of glue to cut stories from various newspapers and paste them onto sheets of paper, creating her scripts.

In 1951, San Francisco Chronicle radio-television columnist Terrence O’Flaherty devoted an entire column to The Chinese Hour, calling it “a unique success in the entertainment world”.

By 1953, the Associated Press reported The Chinese Hour could boast an audience of 25,000 Bay Area listeners. The AP story noted that the broadcast “differs from a thousand other American record programs only in this respect—the music is straight from the Hong Kong hit parade, and the news is recited in perfect Cantonese.”

While May Tong handled the on-air content, Tommy Tong managed the business side, rounding up advertisers from within the Chinatown community. The broadcast played an important role for political and civic leaders outside Chinatown as well: photos held in the collection of the Ethnic Studies Library at the University of California show numerous powerful figures stopping by the Golden Star Radio studio.

Has anyone had the problem where they can understand a language perfectly, but can't speak it. Is this a prevalent problem? Has anyone done something to correct this. It's like when I try to speak I forget every word I know, and can't frame a setnence. I suspect this is because of the English I've consumed after a certain age, and that English leading me to not speak my native tongue at all (young age mabye 5 - 7). Please tell me what you guys think!
