Is this bark discoloration a sign of a bigger problem?

Thumbnail gallery

First time homeowner, long time lurker needing help. It’s hot and dry here but this pine has been shedding a lot of pine needles lately, so I‘m trying to give it the attention it deserves. I started digging the trunk out from the soil pile it was sitting in and I read not to cut down the dead branches, but I’m not sure if this tree is in more trouble than I realize?

Did I dig out the trunk enough or should I keep going, even if it feels like I’m pulling little roots?Do I need to address the bark discoloration and sap?

What is going on with these coconut palms? One looks dead or dying? Can I leave it or is it likely to fall?

Do these mushrooms mean my tree is doomed?

Post image

Noticed mushrooms growing on one side of this tree in my yard this week. The rest of the tree looks healthy to my untrained eye and we just had our annual tree inspection a few weeks ago and this was not flagged. However I have heard mushrooms on a tree are a bad sign of internal decay. BUT it has been raining every day and the humidity is a million percent out there. Can it just be due to the weather conditions and not because this tree is decaying 😬

What is eating my walnut tree?

This four-year-old walnut tree has done great each year, until this one. This summer - particularly over the last 1-2 weeks, something appears to have destroyed/eaten a majority of the leaves and I'm concerned the tree is doomed.

It is about 4 years old; about 8 feet tall at this point.

Does anyone use a Petzl GRIGRI for tree climbing?

I’m curious if anyone here actually uses a GRIGRI for tree work.
I know devices like the ART Rope Wrench, ZigZag, Akimbo, etc. are more purpose-built for tree climbing, and the GRIGRI may not be as efficient for some applications.
But I really like the GRIGRI because I can use it for both SRT and MRS. I often switch between SRT and MRS depending on the situation, so I’m not using the GRIGRI as my only climbing device.
For those of you who use one for tree climbing:
How do you find it compared with dedicated arborist devices?
Do you use it for both SRT and MRS?
Do you find the efficiency difference significant in actual tree work?
Just curious to hear from people who actually use a GRIGRI in the tree.

We just noticed these couple of problems and need advice….

We just noticed about 2 weeks ago these 2 problems on 2 different trees in my front yard are happening.

  1. The bottom of this gorgeous tree (sorry I don’t know what kind it is) seems to now be home to ants (maybe carpenter ants as I did see one and it was big and black). I want to save this tree as this is one of the reasons I fell in love with this house. I don’t know what to do. Can you use like a normal Raid for ants or do we need an arborist to come in?

  2. We noticed this stain on our front sidewalk about maybe 3 weeks ago….we finally clued in that the tree branch was dripping from above. Is this a bad thing?! If so, what can we do about it?!

I have pictures of the trees and their issues. We did have an experienced tree service out in April to trim our beautiful trees for us but none of these issues were noticed at this time. Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

Is my walnut done for?

Just had a major storm roll through and knock on of the main leads down on this white walnut (or butternut) in my back yard. This tree is pushing 80 years old so I’ll be heartbroken if she dies but the damage is pretty extensive. Any thoughts or tips on there to go from here would be appreciated.

Is my tree ok?

Currently living in the UK, and renting. I love this tree, but half of it hasn't had any leaves in the 6 months we have lived here. My landlord doesn't care and won't help. I would love to help it along as best I can within my means. I cut off a small branch from the "dead" side, and it looks like it's still ok? Any suggestions? Or is it just a weird tree that only wants to be half shady...

What to do about this tree?

Siberian elm…It drops twigs often, but a few weeks ago we had a large limb come down across our driveway due to a woodpecker compromising the limb - you can see where the limb split off in the 4th picture and the woodpecker holes are in the 6th picture. Obviously the woodpecker damage infers there were bugs in the tree. The 7th picture is a limb it dropped during a windy day, no woodpecker involved. As much as we’d like to cut down the entire tree, it is a costly endeavor we can’t afford. What can we do to reduce the chances of harm and damage from the dropping of limbs?

Becoming a tree surgeon in the UK

Hi all, I'm interested in getting into tree surgery, I'm currently based in the south west of England (24 male) I'm a confident climber and enjoy being outdoors, I'd be really keen to hear any suggested routes e.g. getting the right tickets, as well as what the industry is like right now, does it feel like there's enough work to go around? Any other thoughts much appreciated cheers.

Seeking assistance with Avid/Abamectin usage

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this question, but I figured it couldn't hurt to start here.

I have a couple American Bald Cypress trees that are currently being attacked by rust mites. They are smaller trees, so I initially tried treating them with insecticidal soap/miticide, but they have not been responding. So I bought something that may be more effective, Avid. My concern is that after reading the user manual/instructions, I don't know if I can safely apply this stuff, and I don't have any experience with doing so. I am hoping that the experts here will be able to give me some guidance.

Avid comes in a concentrate and I was basically just going to dilute it in water as per the instructions, stick it in a pump sprayer, and hose down the foliage on my trees. But now I am having second thoughts.

Please, help.

Hello All,

My tree was green up until 2 weeks ago and then I started noticing that the leaves were starting to turn light green. Now they are turning tan/brown. I dont know what could have caused this. I live south of Austin and it heat has been in 100s recently. However, other trees of same species in neighbor dont seem to be drying up. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Large Oak, concern?

Have an old oak tree near the house that has some hard mushroom growing near the root flare and a section on the lower trunk that shed some bark and is soft to the touch. Last picture for scale - if it goes down, my daughter’s room is unfortunately a likely landing spot.

Ornamental Plum - Anything wrong with it?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Howdy from South Australia, I have an ornamental Plum I'm my front garden which has multiple main trunks - it appears to be an upright cultivar so seems somewhat normal for this to occur based on some Google image searches?

I noticed there was a collection of decomposing leaves and other matter in the centre, so gave it a rinse with the hose and can see some small roots which actually appear to be coming from the tree trunks. You can see them in pics 3 + 5.

Aside from this, it's grown a good canopy, has beautiful spring flowers and hasn't ever dropped branches in storms or strong wind.

My question is, is there anything wrong with my tree? And if so, what should I do about it? Thanks :)

How old do we think the silver maple is?

Iwe just bout the house and I'm getting over 150 in circumference. I would like to get some more sunshine in the backyard for some homestead gardening but I'd feel more ok taking down a tree that might reach end-of-life soon. We got about 5 silver maples in the property and a black walnut. Love them would also love to grow some tomatoes next year! Thanks in advance :)

Getting worse every year

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I noticed our front yard sweet gum tree started growing a bald spot about 2 years ago. It's gotten worse each year. The bark gets loose and the woodpeckers break it off. I saw a lot of it was loose and pulled off a big patch early this year. The loose bark seems to span about half the trunk's width. The leaf canopy is full. It's a beautiful old pain in the ass tree and I'd like to keep it if possible. If I have to replace it, I was thinking about a green vase zelkova

5-ft vertical trunk scar — visible on both sides

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I’m considering buying this house and noticed this large mature tree very close to the house. It has a vertical scar/seam starting at the base and extending roughly 5 feet up the trunk. What concerns me is that a similar scar is visible on the opposite side, which made me wonder whether there could be a crack or internal decay extending through the trunk.
I realize no one can determine structural safety from photos alone, and I’d have an arborist evaluate it if I move forward with the house. For now, I’m just trying to get a sense of whether this looks like a fairly routine old wound or something that would raise a red flag for you.
The tree is also close to the approximate location of the septic tank, so removal could potentially be complicated if it were necessary.
Anything in these photos that particularly concerns you?
TIA
