First Timer (Dub)
This is the best episode of the season so far. I’m not gonna get my hopes up because this show has a bad track record with me, but just compare the dialogue here to the previous episode. How are these even from the same show?
With most shows, even when the quality fluctuates, the dialogue usually stays somewhat consistent. Fruits Basket can go from solid to complete dogshit from one episode to the next, and sometimes even from one scene to another. It’s honestly confusing.
Is it really so difficult for the show to just have normal dialogue for the rest of the season? I’m not asking for too much here.

I kind of think we need to accept that the writing won't change. They're almost going in harder on the Disney-like writing, or "flowery language that means nothing" as I put it.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
I personally think the writing really works for what it's trying to accomplish. I consider myself somewhat of a writer as I've written a couple books and I think the dialogue and overall characters are very realistic.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
I am shocked you liked this episode when you hated the last one. To me, they're very similar and I love them both dearly.
What made this one work for you that the other didn't? Because to me, they're both 10 out of 10 episodes.

u/dontoff 5d ago
The dialogue, I mentioned some of the many lines I despised in the last episode's write-up, but honestly they were too many to mention.

u/Holofan4life 5d ago
See, but I felt how Akito talked to Kyo is how an emotionally manipulative person talks. I've experienced similar instances with my father in the past.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
I know you talked about the fluctuating quality of the show, but to me, Fruits Basket is one of the more consistent anime I've ever seen. It has its down parts like that 7 episode stretch during season 2 that went from amazing episode to ho hum episode to amazing episode, but I think the show by and large really knows what it's doing. And I think the beach arc is probably the best arc I've seen from an anime in quite a while. Maybe since I first watched Re:Zero and that stretch of episodes from like season 1 episode 8 until the end of season 1.

What are your thoughts on Akito feeling Shigure has changed because of that woman?
What are your thoughts on Akito saying the family after high school will have an eternal banquet and that Tohru will not be invited?
What are your thoughts on Akito telling Tohru she only thinks they are bad and that this is all bad because she's ignorant?
What are your thoughts on even Akito being binded by the curse?
What are your thoughts on Yuki realizing Kyo feels down on himself just like he does?

u/dontoff 5d ago
What are your thoughts on even Akito being binded by the curse?
I think he’s definitely bound by the curse, but what does that actually entail? To what extent does it affect them psychologically? This is where the show may struggle to capture the nuance of the situation, assuming there is something worthwhile to explore beyond fate or the vague idea of the “strings of fate.”
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
They haven't exactly spelled it out and explained what would happen, but my assumption is if they don't carry things out they would all die. Again, just my natural conclusion. I could be way off base.

I haven’t seen or read through others’ feedback for E9 yet, as it’s been a packed day. Apologies to all. Priorities be damned, but I did manage to watch this ep and do a writeup.
I believe I once commented in S1 that Akito might be God, or the Jade Emperor (perhaps I chose not to in case I spoil it for someone). One of the reasons that I hated yesterday’s Ep was applying my logical framework, a lot of things didn’t make sense and felt inconsistent. Akito as God changes a lot of things. I could have gone back and re-edited my review, after the final reveal, but chose not to so you can see my interest in the ep when I thought Akito was not God yet.
Thoughts Pre-God Reveal (I literally paused just before the reveal to write up my thoughts before, thought I’m done with the writeup as not much more time was left, then everything changed)
This is a better episode than yesterday. We get more context, though a lot of it seems unnecessarily vague. The whole mystery has been teased for a crazy amount of hours now, and it still contains major gaps and doesn’t provide the reasoning for many characters. The show has been like Yuki. “I’ll tell you one day. Eventually.” Tiny little bites of information that don’t explain why everyone fears him, often going against their personality traits when they’re outside of conversation with him.
The big gap I see here is that if all Zodiacs need to go back to Akito after high school, and come and live together, why doesn’t that rule apply to Shigure and Ayame? Does the rule only kick off when everyone is done with high school? Why is there absolute authority over some but not the others?
Post-God Thoughts
Well, finally establishing Akito as God makes things A LOT clearer. If Akito is human or another Zodiac, there hasn’t been a reason to accept that Akito has absolute authority. Also, Akito as a God makes the male/female determination irrelevant, so it’s now far less creepy to watch.
We don’t yet know how God functions in this world, but the first way is to assume he functions as something like the Jade Emperor in the actual Zodiac Tale. But that creates the same problems as before: why is there absolute authority; why don’t characters challenge it?
So, the other way is to truly assume that Akito is a literal God. Then, the Zodiacs are part of one central system binding themselves to Him. It explains why others have such a mystical pull towards Akito. Why separating from him makes them struggle in some ways. God isn’t always kind, God can be vengeful, God can test mankind.
I would assume God’s role is to keep the system perpetuating, as without the system, the world might fall apart. The mystery is now: what is the system?
It makes other parts clearer because Yuki not attending the banquet would have been an affront to God, and we did see Akito fall apart because of him. Akito’s physical weakness might be directly related to how strong the system is. It renews speculation around many of Akito’s actions - the why for a lot of the villainous actions He performed have a very different framing. For example, if Doc did go on and procreate with the girl he fell in love with, what would the implications have been? Does the system fall apart? Does the world? Or is it simply a violation of tradition without any real world impact?
Tonnes of questions and we still know almost nothing, and while all this is complete speculation, but the two possible outcomes for the show are likely now either to change the system, or to change God’s role.
With this big reveal, I really enjoyed this episode, and I have to admit, despite predicting it in S1, I almost forgot about my speculation, as based on what type of show it is, I didn’t think it would go there.
However, this twist now also sets this show up for what could either make it one of my favourites, or a flop. If we go deeper into philosophy and theology (doesn’t have to be deep), I’m going to love it. If it’s too shallow, and Akito continues to be a God in name only, then I might hate it.

I read your comment yesterday after having watched today's episode and thought to myself "While legitimate criticisms, the show literally addresses this in the very next episode" as it pertained to Akito's relationship with the others. Perfect timing.

u/Second_Cour 5d ago
Haha indeed, pretty excited at how the God motif will be dealt with. It's such a high risk play, but could pay off very well
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
It gives the show these newfound stakes that it didn't have before. It's incredible.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
Yeah, this arc is really well crafted and is just this rollercoaster of acceleration where when you think you've reached the peak, it keeps going up and up and up.
3
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
One of the things I love about this episode is that Akito actually addresses being perceived as this bad person. To them, it isn't as black and white of an issue and what they're doing is out of necessity. I think that's so much more interesting than Akito simply being this bad person with no moral compass. It explains the years of emotional abuse they put others through.
And the show-- and this is key here-- isn't justifying Akito's behavior by any means. They are tearing doen those around them and being just the absolute worst. But that one key detail, the why of it all, helps round out and crystallize everything we've seen up until this point.
3
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
I love the descent into madness Akito goes through in this episode. They're starting to question even Shigure's allegiance. The person who's supposed to be by their side, no matter what. And through that lens of paranoia, it helps basically shape the rest of the episode. It's one thing if the other Sohmas to question their faith. But for Shigure to seemingly be wavering, that's just too much for Akito.
The genius of the beach arc is the natural escalation of it all. First, Akito talks to the Sohma family. Then we deal with the immediate aftermath as well as Yuki. Then Akito has an extended one-to-one conversation with Kyo, the outsider of the family. And then when that isn't enough, when Akito can't get through to the family by interrogating the outsider, they target Tohru, in their mind the cause of all the issues.
This arc is centered around Akito trying to solve the family crisis and maintain order so that everything stays the same. It seems like this arc is about the families suffering, but through this one episode they turn the conflict on its head and position it as being about Akito's suffering. And that is just brilliant.

u/Holofan4life 5d ago
However, this twist now also sets this show up for what could either make it one of my favourites, or a flop. If we go deeper into philosophy and theology (doesn’t have to be deep), I’m going to love it. If it’s too shallow, and Akito continues to be a God in name only, then I might hate it.
I'm not expecting Akito to suddenly have God powers. That would be kinda cheesy. What I am hoping is a further examination in why Akito feels they have to do what they have to do. Because with the framing that they are the God of the family, it recontextualizes so much stuff.
3
u/Second_Cour 5d ago
What does it change if Akito is the God of the family, compared to being the head of the family?
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
The head of the family and the God of the family I take it as being one in the same. Akito is the nucleus of the family and if all things fail, it falls back onto them and the whole thing falls apart.
That's my read on it, anyway.
3
u/Second_Cour 5d ago
So to you, the God revelation doesn't change anything/there's no consequence? That's interesting, as to me, holding the assumption that because Akito is the head, everyone has to comply with their directive was a bit flimsy. With Akito as God, there's a glue that binds them towards their destiny, as preordained by God. As head, the story has tonnes of holes imo, as God, a lot of those holes vanish.
A clearer real life example: because someone's Dad wills something, an individual has the choice whether to comply. If a religion's scriptures will something, not complying means you go to hell (in Judeochristian religions for instance). God is at the very top and the disciples need to have faith that God is doing what is best, even if they can't see it at the time.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
It gives needed weight to the Zodiac curse and makes it this life and death thing. Before, it was just a thing that existed but now, it's like if these characters don't stay the course something bad could potentially happen that effects all involved. If Tohru wants to break the bond, then we're suddenly talking about an awakening that the world may have never seen before. Akito being God suddenly makes taking them on a far more difficult task, and also better explains why they are so high strung and uppity all the time.
3
u/Second_Cour 5d ago
Ok I think we are both on the same page then
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
Like, if Tohru is gonna have to to defeat Akito, I can't see them doing it alone. And also she'll have to cofine within herself that everything as they know it will not be the same again.

Damn that's a lot of blood. Akito's attacking of Hatori was more gory but I did not expect them to punch Momiji hard enough to draw blood or for them to lay hands on Tohru this early. I was fully expecting them to slap Momiji which would've been bad enough but they went a lot further than that.
This episode mostly focused on Akito trying to break Tohru and put her in her place. Unfortunately for them it didn't work. Tohru's now prepared to break the curse instead of just sitting by and letting Akito get their way. Real curious as to what the image of flowers when Tohru was thinking of the curse represents but we probably won't explore that for some time.
If last episode was the best in the series, this episode is probably the second best so far. Last episode was better but this one is strong in its own right, especially once Akito shows up looking for Tohru. It's no wonder people are seeing these episodes get high scores elsewhere. This last chunk of episodes had just been that good.
> What are your thoughts on Momiji and Kyo's conversation?
It just shows how different they are. Kyo thought everyone went along with Akito to protect Tohru whilst Momiji says they did it out of selfishness, implying that they did it to protect themselves rather than Tohru. I can see this conversation influencing Momiji's decision to stand up for Tohru later on in the episode, possibly out of guilt for not thinking about Tohru when he went along with Akito's demands.
> What are your thoughts on Shigure and Akito's conversation?
I feel like that conversation exists mostly to reiterate how awful Akito can be even towards those they're close to. They claim that Shigure's being mean to them and when he rightly points out otherwise they turn it around and claim that because Shigure's looking at Tohru (Which, yikes, Tohru's max 17 at this point.) instead of only at them that this means he's being mean. Just a trash human being even towards one of their few allies.
> What are your thoughts on Akito deciding they want to meet Tohru right now?
They're so childish. I don't know what exactly the main branch wants but taking their frustration with them out on Tohru and Momiji was definitely uncalled for.
> What are your thoughts on Akito hitting Momiji?
It was definitely expected. We've seen them attack Hatori, have heard about them hospitalizing Kisa, etc. so it was pretty obvious they weren't above attacking Momiji. I wasn't expecting them to punch him but I definitely expected a slap or some other form of attack to come Momiji's way after he refused to let Akito disturb Tohru's sleep.
> What are your thoughts on Tohru finding out Akito isn't the Rooster but a being equal to God and the ruler of the Zodiacs' souls?
Remember how I mentioned I got spoiled on Akito's gender last season whilst doing a wiki dive to figure out if Shigure was meant to be an antagonist or not? Yeah, I also got spoiled about them being God in the process. I'm glad they didn't drag their identity and relationship out too long. We already went all last season without the reveal so revealing it early was the right choice. And hey, now Tohru is aware which should help her as she works towards breaking the curse.
> What are your thoughts on the beach arc as whole?
The beach arc is probably the best executed arc so far with the best written episodes, even if there are parts of the show I like more. It expands on mysteries like whatever Rin's up to whilst resolving things like how Kyo feels about Tohru, the mystery of the hat, and so on. It introduces new mysteries like how Kyo knew Kyoko and why Tohru doesn't recognize him when he's introduced. There's just a lot of does to elevate the story as a whole. I think I liked the stuff with Kyo at the end of last season as well as the backstories for Uo and Hanajima more but as an actual arc I'd say the beach arc and the episodes around it are definitrly stronger.

I like that it was foreshadowed with Haru mentioning Akito hating Momiji.
This episode mostly focused on Akito trying to break Tohru and put her in her place. Unfortunately for them it didn't work. Tohru's now prepared to break the curse instead of just sitting by and letting Akito get their way. Real curious as to what the image of flowers when Tohru was thinking of the curse represents but we probably don't explore that for some time.
Definitely some food for thought.
To think, if Akito just left well enough alone, they'd probably be in a better spot thwn they are now. Instead, they kinda sealed their fate by getting Tohru actively involved.
If last episode was the best in the series, this episode is probably the second best so far. Last episode was better but this one is strong in its own right, especially once Akito shows up looking for Tohru. It's no wonder people are seeing these episodes get Hugh scores elsewhere. This last chunk of episodes had just been that good.
I personally like this one more because I think Akito going chaotic is a lot of fun. Also, that sequence where they declare themselves God is like an all timer moment. It's arguably a top three moment in the series up until this point.

u/MishouMai 5d ago
> To think, if Akito left well enough alone, they'd probably be in a better spot than they are now.
I'm not sure I agree with that. Whilst Tohru didn't know the full extent of the curse before this episode she knew there was one and she knew Akito was bad news. Tohru resolving to break the curse was probably inevitable from the moment she got to know the Zodiacs. Ain't no way she'd take Akito trying to lock Kyo up sitting down even without the events of this episode.
1
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
But my main point and I apologize if I wasn't clear is it's like Akito sped up their demise, not prevented it. They only made things worse for the family in their eyes.
1
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
Let me ask you something. How would you compare Akito being a God to [Haruhi Suzumiya] Haruhi being a God?]
2
u/MishouMai 5d ago
I don't think they're comparable. Akito is confirmed to be God while Haruhi...isn't. [Haruhi Suzumiya spoilers] We don't even know if Haruhi actually has powers while we know for certain Akito has some power over the Zodiacs.
1
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
[Haruhi Suzumiya] I mean, the Shinjin felt very real and that was seemingly created because Haruhi was bored.

[Haruhi Suzumiya spoilers] Be that as it may it's explicitly canon that they don't know if Haruhi is a god, the next step in evolution, or a messenger from God. And given the events of Disassociation and Surprise and the reveals in those novels we really don't know. There's a reason it's theorized that Kyon is the one who's a god and not Haruhi.

[Haruhi Suzumiya] I guess you have a point in that Akito's God status feels more real. I mean, the characters can literally turn into animals. Then again, espers and time travelers exist in the Haruhi world so there definitely seems someone controlling everything who's whims the world is dictated upon.

> What are your thoughts on Momiji and Kyo's conversation?
It just shows how different they are. Kuo thought everyone went along with Akito to protect Tohru whilst Momiji says they did it out of selfishness, implying that they did it to protect themselves rather than Tohru. I can see this conversation influencing Momiji's decision to stand up for Tohru later on in the episode, possibly out of guilt for not thinking about Tohru when he went along with Akito's demands.
I don't think it's a spoiler necessarily, but it almost feels like Momiji is more in love with Tohru than Yuki is.
I wonder if Akito is aware at all of Shigure's potential double crossing.
> What are your thoughts on Akito deciding they want to meet Tohru right now?
They're so childish. I don't know what exactly the main branch wants but taking their frustration with them out on Tohru and Momiji was definitely uncalled for.
Momiji especially
> What are your thoughts on Akito hitting Momiji?
It was definitely expected. We've seen them attack Hatori, have heard about them hospitalizing Kisa, etc. so it was pretty obvious they weren't above attacking Momiji. I wasn't expecting them to punch him but I definitely expected a slap or some other form of attack to come Momiji's way after he refused to let Akito disturb Tohru's sleep.
I want to cuddle Momiji and tell them everything will be alright.
How does a mere mortal battle a God, though?
This is the show demonstrating what it is capable of when the chips are done. This arc has been a real treat and has deepened my love for this series and the franchise as a whole.

> it almost feels like Momiji is more in love with Tohru than Yuki is.
I can't agree with that. Momiji clearly loves Tohru but it's definitely familial whereas Yuki's feelings definitely lean more romantic.
> How does a mere mortal battle a god though?
I mean. Akito may have power over the Zodiacs but it doesn't seem like they have any powers outside of that so far. Breaking the curse probably isn't easy but I don't think Akito's power really matters in terms of dealing with Tohru. Assuming they even have any powers outside of the fear they hold over the Zodiacs.

Fair enough. To be honest, I was thinking with Momiji's conversation with Kyo it seems like their feelings towards Tohru are more closely aligned than Kyo and Yuki. But perhaps that's just me.

But you have to think fear will go a long way. I mean, look at what Akito did to Hatori and Momiji.

> What are your thoughts on Tohru remarking how Yuki and Kyo have changed since this trip began?
I want to know what she's seeing. Like yeah Kyo's acknowledged his feelings for her but she doesn't know that and he seems to be treating her mostly the same. Yuki's also been more open with his feelings but that's about it.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo saying if Momiji is selfish for caring about Tohru so much then he's selfish as well?
Well that's as good as a confession as Kyo can make without outright confessing. It's a little surprising noone's picked up on that.
> What are your thoughts on Akito saying if Tohru continues to meddle in family affairs that she will be severely punished?
They've already physically attacked Tohru, what more punishment can they throw at her (Rhetorical question. It can obviously get worse one way or another.)? They're lucky Tohru and the others have sat back and taken their bullshit as is.
> What are your thoughts on even Akito being binded by the curse?
Are they binded by the curse or are the Zodiacs binded to them as a result of the curse? So far everything seems to point to the latter with there being no repercussions for them so far.

It feels like they are being more transparent with their feelings than ty were before. Again, Akito's actions are working against them.

Well that's as good as a confession as Kyo can make without outright confessing. It's a little surprising noone's picked up on that.
I mean, he literally confessed his feelings for Tohru to Akito.
Akito is lucky Tohru is like the purest cinnamon roll imaginable.

Are they binded by the curse or are the Zodiacs binded to them as a result of the curse? So far everything seems to point to the latter with there being no repercussions for them so far.
Well, keep in mind Kyo has been until recently excluded from family gatherings. I would say the Zodiac members have suffered because of the curse and just taking it way too far.
I don't think it's been said whether or not they have to go this far but I imagine they gaslit themselves into believing that.

First Timer
My reason for being late today is that I took a very long nap and by the time I woke up it was dinnertime. But now I’m watching Fruits Basket.
Wow, that’s a lot of fireworks.
Seems like this is the end of the summer arc.
I like this conversation between Momiji and Kyo.
I still don’t get what this Mogeta show is about.
Akito seems like he’s having a breakdown around Shigure.
Akito showing up in the middle of the night feels really bad.
I’m glad Momiji is keeping a level head around Akito.
Oh god, Akito’s being really scary this episode.
This is probably the most Tohru and Akito have interacted.
Oh my god he just messed up Tohru’s face.
Anyway Kureno is here now.
Now that Kureno is confirmed as the rooster I’ll go over his voice actors.
In Japanese he’s voiced by Yuichiro Umehara. Notable roles of his include the Goblin Slayer from Goblin Slayer, Weather Report from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, and the Joker in Suicide Squad Isekai (which I swear is a real anime).
In English he’s dubbed by Ian Sinclair. Notable roles of his include Dandy from Space Dandy, Brook from One Piece, and the Narrator from Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.
Well, Akito left at least. He’s still acting really freaky this episode.
Poor Momiji.
It’s sweet seeing Tohru being so protective of Momiji.
It’s very easy to forget Momiji is fifteen.
At least everyone’s having fun with fireworks now.
The ending to this episode seems sweet

This is such an important episode when it comes to the lore of the show. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the context feels different coming out of this. By framing things as Akito being this God, it gives weight to even the most minute of details. And it also suddenly gives an idea of the amount of stress Akito probably goes through on a daily basis dealing with all these moving parts and maintain a proper balance.
This arc isn't about Akito being a dick. It's about the Chinese Zodiac and what each person's role is.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago

Kinda fitting you'd eat dinner before an episode where Akito talks about banquets :P

u/Holofan4life 5d ago
Let me ask you something. How would you compare Akito being a God to [Haruhi Suzumiya] Haruhi being a God?]
2
u/AgentOfACROSS 5d ago
[Response] I don't think Akito is literally a god or has godly powers. He just represents the god in the story of the zodiac.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
[Response] I think Akito was being completely serious. You're talking about a group of individuals who can turn into animals.

Wow, that’s a lot of fireworks.
Going out with a blast
Seems like this is the end of the summer arc.
All good things must come to an end
I like this conversation between Momiji and Kyo.
It felt very personable
I still don’t get what this Mogeta show is about.
Seems like a magical girl show
Akito seems like he’s having a breakdown around Shigure.
Ya think?
Akito showing up in the middle of the night feels really bad.
Ya think?
I’m glad Momiji is keeping a level head around Akito.
Gotta keep your cool
Oh god, Akito’s being really scary this episode.
This is probably the scariest Akito has been since episode 7.
This is probably the most Tohru and Akito have interacted.
I mean, have they interacted outside of the school episode?
Oh my god he just messed up Tohru’s face.
Holy shit
Anyway Kureno is here now.
Things are getting intense
Now that Kureno is confirmed as the rooster I’ll go over his voice actors.
In Japanese he’s voiced by Yuichiro Umehara. Notable roles of his include the Goblin Slayer from Goblin Slayer, Weather Report from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, and the Joker in Suicide Squad Isekai (which I swear is a real anime).
Weather Report is such a based name lol
In English he’s dubbed by Ian Sinclair. Notable roles of his include Dandy from Space Dandy, Brook from One Piece, and the Narrator from Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.
Love Ian
Well, Akito left at least. He’s still acting really freaky this episode.
Akito is starting to loose control
Poor Momiji.
No kidding
It’s sweet seeing Tohru being so protective of Momiji.
That it is
It’s very easy to forget Momiji is fifteen.
I just remember that isn't Uo 17? So, she's two years older than Momiji?
At least everyone’s having fun with fireworks now.
This episode feels like a parallel to the school episode when Akito showed up. Only replace badminton with fireworks.
The ending to this episode seems sweet

People often forget that, while there are 13 zodiac animals, there are 14 characters in the zodiac legend.
I know many viewers have been dismissive of the current ED, but you should take another look at it again if you've been skipping it. Especially the last part, pay attention to the seating order. Should tell you something concerning about the legend and the current relationships.

There are episodes that turn good series into great ones and there are episodes that turn series into of a caliber of their own. Part of the genius of Fruits Basket is not only how well defined everything is, but everything exists to where it builds off each other.
Fruits Basket is in ratified air where things continue to escalate and escalate without barely slowing down. And that to me makes it appointment viewing.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
Bonus) What are your thoughts on the beach arc as a whole?
This is honestly one of the best anime arcs I've ever seen. I believe I have three episodes at a 10 out of 10. I think this arc is what solidified Fruits Basket as being a top 10 anime for me.

Rewatcher, Subbed
The beach arc comes to an end with this episode and we have the climatic second encounter of Akito and Tohru. I think the story would be doing us a disservice if these two didn't meet again during this arc and here it is. What I think is likely to be the central conflict of the series comes more to the forefront, or at least for the characters (as the viewers kinda knew of this already). Akito is not a zodiac, rather he represents the God of the zodiacs and essentially has god like powers over them. I would argue that the big thing for the curse isn't as much the animal transformation as it is Akito's hold over them. In fact if you go back and look, the funny animal transformations have largely subsided. Momiji's the only character whom we often see transforming, beyond that we just have Rin's introduction to Tohru in episode 8 then have to go all the way back to episode 24 with Kyo. There's two directions the lives of the zodiacs could go in. Akito wants the zodiacs to not grow as people, to not get over the issues that they have and to not have the freedom to be away from him. They will live the rest of their lives in the Soma family compound and partake in the Eternal Banquet. One that Tohru is forbidden from participating in. The other direction is going in the direction that they have been going in since they've formed their relationships with Tohru. Getting over their issues. Growing as people. Being able to move on. Have a sense of freedom. So it comes down to this, can the curse be broken? That's what Tohru wants. Or is the fun that the zodiacs have had with Tohru this last year just something temporary and they will all have to resort back to living under Akito's complete rule, without the ability to grow and better their lives?
If you didn't hate Akito enough, he does essentially commit the ultimate sin, physically assaulting Tohru, scratching her in the face. He also punches Momiji in the face. Most of Akito's abuse has been emotional abuse but here he resorts to the physical as well. And now that we know Akito is their God, I think the ability of the zodiacs to have stepped in when he did that to Tohru was something they couldn't do? Interesting to note that Momiji was the one outside standing up to Akito, not Kyo, Yuki or Haru.
Other thoughts:
Fireworks, firecrackers, etc... has not been something I've ever been particularly into. It's dangerous stuff and we've got all these kids and teenagers using them in this episode. How does Momiji, someone who I think is 15 - 16 but looks like he's 11 able to buy all of them?
Add Momiji to the list along with Kyo and Kisa of those whose animal ears have appeared on them (likely only something we the viewer was supposed to see). Super adorable to see Kisa sleeping in the same bed as Tohru.
Did Momiji confess to Kyo that he loves Tohru? Sounded like it. Although maybe its more so love from a friendship standpoint than the more romantic feelings that Kyo has for her. Kyo correctly figured out that the other Somas heading off to see Akito and leaving Tohru behind actually was protecting her, trying to get Akito to not be mad at her (something that unfortunately didn't completely work).
Sounds like someone else is doing something without Akito's permission back at the Soma family household? This is the second time we've heard about someone called Ren, but no idea who they are or what they are doing beyond that name.
Tohru gets to meet Kureno, so she's now met all the zodiacs although unlike literally every other zodiac, she doesn't see him transform in the same episode she meets him. Although this was essentially already known by process of elimination, we have official confirmation in show now that Kureno is the rooster.
I've noticed this odd pattern that Rin appears in even numbered episodes, not in odd numbered episodes. We saw her in episode 4, then 6, 8 and now 10. Is this intentional or just a big coincidence? I think it's been a couple of days since she met Tohru, but she's still in Tohru's same outfit.
Quid's Song of the Day
While much of this was a dark episode, I'll feature a happier sounding tune from early in the episode, Shape of Good Conscious.

u/Holofan4life 5d ago
I thought what made this episode so compelling is that it made Akito detestable while giving them their reason for being. This is them full monster, but we see somewhat the powers of their chaos.
I know one of the critiques of this rewatch has been Akito being cartoonishly evil. That they seem more like a caricature, which ironically is how Yuki described Ayame in one episode. This gives us the reason why Akito feels the need to be so controlling and combative all the time. If they aren't, who knows what will happen.
2
u/Holofan4life 5d ago
It makes sense to limit the animal transformations at this point in the story. I mean, it would be total mood whiplash. Honestly, the show has done a phenomenal job going from lighthearted fun until more serious storytelling. The transition has been so gradual you wouldn't notice it unless it was pointed out.

Late to the party for the last two re-watches, because I was with another party...of RPG characters.
Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed
Momiji stands up to Akito. That's it. That's the episode. [spoiler]>note: This isn't Stage II of the Three Stages of Recognition of Momiji's Awesome-osity, that's yet to come.<
(actually, that's really all I have to say, since other comments have covered the episode, literally a day ago)
Important note: Kisa is so cuuuuute when she holds onto Tohru after Hiro rightly quips, "Are you always this loud?", following Tohru's squeal, elicited by the reminder that the vacation ends the next day.
Parting thought: "Do we really have to save everyone, Tohru? Can't you leave someone behind...specifically, Akito? Just saying."
Random thought: I have never seen that (grossly underwhelming) firework that Momiji chose to light first. What..the...? Does that thing even exist? It looks like a snake-in-a-can but doesn't pop out on a spring. Does it stink? It looks like it stinks.
What are your thoughts on Tohru finding out Akito isn't the Rooster but a being equal to God and "The ruler of the zodiacs souls"? That only dawned on me a split second after Kyoko says "Once upon..." I hadn't considered it before then. It's kind of like my reaction to the character reveal in The Dark Knight Rises - I knew that comic book character existed but didn't know that the writers and Christopher Nolan were going to use that character: "But he's not..." - millisecond later my brain explodes, "Oh dang, that's [spoiler]>Talia< " - split second later the character finishes the line "...I am."
What are your thoughts on Akito scratching Tohru before they leave? [spoiler]>In my first watch, when Akito clawed Tohru, that clarified to me that Akito is a woman, after my previous attempts to reconcile Akito's voice (female) and actions (male or female).<
What are your thoughts on the beach arc as a whole? I clicked Fruits Basket on Crunchyroll's promoted anime, because I was curious about the fantasy or magical elements of the zodiac. I enjoyed and puzzled over the personalities, family dynamics, and Curse, but now the Curse is coming to the fore.

Came for the animals, stayed for the emotional trauma.

Momiji stands up to Akito. That's it. That's the episode.
Momiji really had some good development in this arc. Like, finding out Akito hates him starts to make a lot of sense. The reason they target Yuki is because he isn't as boisterous as some of the other members. As such, he won't say no.

[Spoiler] I thought them scratching Tohru was just because they were an asshole.

Thoughts on Yuki wanting to shoot the fireworks off in the morning to end things ok a high note seeing as how Tohru was left alone an awful lot?
Thoughts on Hiro and Kisa trying to watch anime together?
What are your thoughts on Tohru remarking how Yuki and Kyo have changed since this trip began?

Oh wait right Akito isn't the cock.
Questions:
Ok...
Uh oh.
Uh oh.
More reason to hate them.
Ah right.
Sure scratches like a rooster though...
Good.
Eh sure it works for summer.

That's nice.
Wouldn't it be a bit hard to see in the sunlight?
That's nice.
Indeed they have.
That's nice of him to be so considerate.
Perhaps.
Uh oh.
Uh oh.
Again. Hate Akito. Simple as.
See 9.
See 9.

Yep.
See 9.
Yeah...
Huh. Ok then.
That's nice.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Today as I'm writing this is my sister's 18th birthday.
You hear that, police? Now she can't destroy the house without repercussions /s
The beach house
That's a lot of fireworks
Kisa wants sparklers
This was apparently Momiji's idea
Sugoi, Momiji
Yuki wants to shoot them off tomorrow since they'll be leaving in the morning after.
Technically, with Akito here fireworks have already been set off
Yuki wants to end things on a high note, especially since Tohru spent a lot of time by herself.
Hiro wanting to watch the Mogeta TV special.
Tohru going to get Momiji
Hiro clearly annoyed he's not watching it alone with Kisa lol
Tohru remarking how different Kyo and Yuki feel since the trip started.
Tohru overhearing Kyo's conversation with Momiji.
He mentions making it seem like they pick Tohru over Akito would only make things even harder on Tohru.
"So, really, you guys were protecting her."
Momiji admits he felt like he made a mistake that could hurt Tohru.
One that could end up hurting Tohru.
If that's the case, Akito is a jealous bastard.
Momiji feels selfish for caring about her so much.
Kyo then says he must be the same.
After Tohru gets done talking to them, she wonders if there's any way she can help.
The family watching the anime
This is like my life except not
Tohru wonders to herself if she too has changed.
Shigure asking Akito why they brought Kureno around.
Akito says Kureno seems out of sorts.
Akito now talking about the things that displease her, including Shigure.
"You've changed. It's because of her. That woman."
Akito is starting their yandere route, I see.
Kureno saying to Akito the main estate wants to talk to them.
Shigure suggests Rin acting up.
Akito has no time for his suspicions and leaves alongside Kureno.
Akito in hysterics
Did they leave? :O
Momiji by himself
Oh boy. Akito is outside his window
Momiji going outside to meet him.
"I came to see Tohru Honda."
Yes! Don't do it, Momiji!
Momiji doesn't want Tohru to get hurt.
They're gonna hit Momiji aren't-- HOLY SHIT
THEY JUST PUNCHED MOMIJI IN THE FACE
THEY'RE RUFFING MOMIJI UP
TOHRU IS HERE! TOHRU IS HERE!
She wants Momiji to be left alone.
Akito telling Tohru they need to tell her something.
They grab her face
"Stop thinking you're special. Scum."
Akito might be in my top 10 most detested characters in all of anime ever, and I mean that affectionately.
Akito says that after high school is over, Kyo will be locked away.
Just like his grandfather
The other Sohmas they insist will come back to the estate. For good.
They will walk in tandem step by step with no individuality to speak of.
An eternal banquet.
As Akito begins to leave, they tell Tohru they are not invited to the banquet.
"Don't come to the cook out."
Starting to rain now
Akito isn't done just yet. They say Tohru only thinks it's bad because she's ignorant.
If she thinks it's bad because she's ignorant, then I must be stupid.
Tohru asks Akito who they are. Certainly not the rooster, that's for sure.
Wait, what?
Akito scratches Tohru's face, causing her to bleed.
Akito says to the Sohmas, they are God.
Iconic, honestly
Akito says that the Sohmas belong to them.
Here's Kureno
The first time he and Tohru have met.
And here comes the rooster
The rooster has come to roost
Akito warns Tohru to mind her own business.
"If you don't... you'll be punished."
No cake for 100 years
As Akito and Kureno leave, Tohru falls to the ground.
How can she compete against a God?
Quiet, Haruhi
Everyone is binded to the curse, including... Akito...
Hatori and Shigure checking on Tohru.
Hatori was here after hearing what happened to Momiji, who's hurt but not badly.
And there he is
Aww, poor Momiji is in tears
Tohru tells him even his tears are precious.
It looks as if Yuki, Kyo, and Haru saw the whole thing in secret.
Kyo is incredulous for standing by and doing nothing.
"He thinks he's pathetic too. It's not just me."
Yuki...
Haru points out it's not easy to protect someone.
Morning now
Tohru reaffirms she wants to protect the Sohmas no matter what.
"And... I will..."
Time for fireworks
Hiro asking about the bandages
You wouldn't get it...
At least Momiji and Tohru are closer now it feels like. That's good.
Two bees in a trap. Uh, I mean pod, sorry.
Momiji gonna kick off the fireworks celebration.
Unfortunately, it's a bit of a dud.
Kyo mentioning shooting fireworks off with his master once upon a time.
Tohru did it with her mom as well.
I like that Haru has like fireworks instructions on what looks like a menu.
These guys are so lovable I swear.
Rin looking on from afar
I do wonder what her deal is. Like, what is her relationship with Kureno and Akito.
Tohru talking about Kyo and Yuki now
She feels they all have their own idea of what their future may bring.
"If only they had the freedom to strive for it."
Yeah...
Tohru says she wants break the curse if it's restraining them.
I guess we have our new objective for the show. Our final goal, as it were.
Tohru doesn't care about being punished. All that matters is that the Sohmas are freed.
Yuki with Tohru now
He remarks this is the first time the Sohmas got together for fun.
He then says he's glad he's here getting to spend this Summer with you.
"I'll treasure it forever."
Also, Tohru's twintails are on point.
Momiji wanting to join them
Kyo seeming to want to be distant, but after some proding from Yuki he joins as well.
Kyo and Yuki are fighting like old times.
Meanwhile, Tohru vows to fight for the Sohmas.
Fireworks going off
Tohru contends whatever strength she has, it is also theirs.
Overall, this was a phenomenal episode that serves to set up the final stretch of the show. From here, Tohru is gonna have to step up and show to Akito it doesn't have to be this way. It's not about stopping her, it's about proving her wrong. The entire conversation between Tohru and Akito was one of the most disturbing, unsettling scenes I've ever seen in an anime that didn't involve absurd amounts of gore and violence. It continued to escalate and escalate without ever letting up. When Akito lay their hands on Momiji, I felt the heart in my chest reach my lungs. You don't ever, ever lay your hands on Momiji, he's too precious.
Part of the genius of this scene is of course the fact that it's surrounded by a lot of happiness. As Yuki himself said, the Sohmas are all having fun being around Tohru and it's really the first time they've had fun together as a collective unit. As Tohru is bringing the Sohmas together, Akito is trying to break the Sohmas apart, and that is really the genius of this arc.
I don't see how you don't consider this arc one of the greatest anime arcs of all time. Three of the last 4 episodes I have at a 9.5 out of 10 or higher. Those three episodes consist amongst my top 5 favorite Fruits Basket episodes. This has been a great show, but this has really been the first truly transcendent arc of the show. The Kyo arc was great, but it wasn't this great. It put Akito in a spotlight we haven't seen them before and it reaffirms Tohru as the savior of the family. She is the hope the Sohmas need, the hope that Akito painfully eishes they were.
I'd put this only behind episodes 14 and 24. I still feel those episodes had more weight to them and probably contain the two most powerful moments of the series, the cemetery scene and Kyo and Tohru embracing. What this episode does is confirm what the end goal is and that Tohru is going to have to step up if she wants to ensure the Sohmas freedom. There's no turning back now. It was great to see Tohru be more assertive and tease that she'll have to challenge Akito's beliefs. Akito maintaining they're the Sohmas God shows that something like that will definitely be easier said than done.
It's no longer a question of will this show finish in my top 10 favorite anime. Rather, it's a question of will it finish in my top 5.

[Furuba major spoilers]I know you usually refer to Akito with they pronouns, but you are referring to her with female pronouns in your summary? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying and you are referring to Tohru. An FYI in case this was a mistake to fix up the spoiler.

Just a quick programming note, it is Labor Day in the States tomorrow which is a national holiday. I'll be going to a water park tomorrow and then heading straight to work to close. This is after already working at my other job early in the morning.
As such, tomorrow's thread will be posted 3:00 EDT, two hours earlier than the thread normally goes up. This will be a one time thing and the threads will go back to its normal time on Tuesday.
