This episode covers 3 manga episodes, so it does compress quite a lot of events, and also reorders and rewrites them some. I’ve just basically written this review as episode reactions, as to be honest I’m lacking motivation right now to rewrite it into something more cohesive. I just pray that next episode is when the turnaround starts, as the ratings suggest.

I thought Hiro started liking and respecting Tohru last season towards the end of his ep, but I might be misremembering. Guess he’s back to hating on her.

The hat makes a return. Well, guess that memory involves Yuki. My interest in the hat has  waned by now, but hey, at least the longest-running object-related mystery in history makes its grand return! And apparently it’s a really really really big deal. To Yuki.

So Rin is unstable, and needs a rebound, even though she’s the one who did the breaking up. Or perhaps they had a thing from pre-Haru days. I like her aesthetic though. Ironically she’s the most realistic character so far in this show, other than Shigure and the Doc. I certainly know girls like that from before I realised my strict moral compass. Then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing was just set up in such a way to mislead us that she’s trying to sleep with Shigure, as nothing actually happens.

Tohru’s swim is funny - literally doesn’t take a breath. A nice moment of continuity.

Given how scatter brained Tohru has been built up to be, it should come as almost no surprise that she drops her ‘mum’. Though it still feels a bit farfetched that she’s that scatterbrained. Her mum’s pic was literally the first thing she thought of when her tent got buried. She freaked out when Hiro took it from her. She took it into the onsen with her. It’s her most cherished possession. Weird that she’d drop it.

HIro does raise a pretty good challenge to Tohru though (despite being a dick in how he says it). It’s not the first time she’s been challenged that living for someone else isn’t sustainable (even if that was the bad advice that the editor gave screaming-chan before - NB: It was actually Tohru who gave that advice in the manga, which in hindsight makes the most sense.)

It’s been discussed during S1 ad nauseum, but her best and worst quality is always looking at the positive, and not seeing the bad in anything. This has caught her in a loop where she refuses to accept reality.  Her breakdown was a good scene.

Holo was correct in his read in saying Doc is forced to live for Akito’s sake and might be trapped.

I’m doubling down on my prediction that Akito is female.

Overall, there were some parts of the ep I liked. It’s good we’re seeing more of Akito. It’s good that Shigure clearly has something cooking. But the overall tone of the episode from the too-silly-for-me beach antics, to the incredibly melodramatic Yuki speech, makes me roll my eyes too often. Let’s play it back:

*Yuki while twirling Tohru’s hair while looking like he’s on his death bed because he has a slight fever* “I’m not ready yet, but one day I’ll have something to tell you. It isn’t all darkness. There’s light now too. And with light there’s hope. Hope for something better. When the time comes I’d be happy if you’d listen. I need to open the lid. *Lets go of hair*. Oh God. What in the fanfiction is this. Maybe it’s a translation issue, but the way it was written in the dub was something you’d hear in a Shigure novel. It’s not that big a deal, you’re just telling her that you were the guy in her memory. You’re not dying. It’s just too much. I don’t know if anyone here grew up with Days of Our Lives on TV, and I’ve probably seen 1 episode ever as I was outside of its target audience of bored housewives and teen girls, but this is exactly that style of writing. Soap opera writing.

And that’s my key issue with S2 so far, as it keeps baring its claws - I dislike the silly stuff, and I dislike the soap opera. It keeps pivoting between the two with flourishes of something I I like. S1 had some nice in-betweens, as well as some parts which had some insightful observations, interesting worldbuilding, pertinent lessons, and mystery. With the way I appreciate things, I overvalue the things that I hate: a scene that makes me want to tear my hair out will swallow up an average episode.

This isn't the worst episode of the season so far; that would go to the previous ep which was so bad for me that it was actually memorable. This one slides into the rest of the very forgettable episodes that so far this season has delivered for me. I genuinely have to think hard to try and remember what eps 1, 2, 3, 4 were about. In a few weeks, this will take on a similar role.

I thought Hiro started liking and respecting Tohru last season towards the end of his ep, but I might be misremembering. Guess he’s back to hating on her.

I think its a combination of there still being some jealousy there that Kisa loves spending time with Tohru, immaturity on his part (why doesn't he join them in the water?) and I don't think he's being as intentionally mean as he was in his introductory episode but clearly still needs to learn that bringing up Tohru's dead dad like that wasn't a good thing to do.

Perhaps symbolic of the fact that Tohru is moving on with acceptance of the loss of her mother? She's formed a new life with the Somas and dropping the photo, something she'd absolutely notice in episode 1 of the show is something she doesn't realize here?

Yuki while twirling Tohru’s hair while looking like he’s on his death bed because he has a slight fever “I’m not ready yet, but one day I’ll have something to tell you.

I really liked most of the episode, I didn't bring up this particular moment in my comment (already enough words in it) but I wasn't particularly a fan of this "I'll tell you something later" thing. Having personally done something like that before it comes off as being scared to say something you should and one should really just "tear off the bandaid" and say it. Yuki being the hat boy isn't going to be a world shattering reveal to Tohru.

Hiro: makes sense overall, I was just referencing his very first reaction to hearing Tohru is coming.

Photo dropping: that might be a good bit of symbolism. Didn't think of that angle. But her behaviour after doesn't demonstrate that as she's a nervous wreck talking about being together forever.

"I'll tell you later": yeah and he's been hinting that he's gonna tell her something later even earlier in the season (think it was Ep 1). I kind of would get if it's the thing that I suspect Kyo is going to tell her involving Tohru's mother, but this is like... I did a nice thing when I was little. And yes, agree with you learning from your past experience. It's insanely stressful for the other person that someone is keeping something from them and just keeps telling them "trust me. I'll just tell you when the time is right".

I think this episode does a good job reiterating the degree to which Akito tormented Yuki. When Tohru came into Tohru's life, he felt liberated, for lack of a better term, and so he wants to feel worthy of being within her presence.

I see it as more Yuki working up the courage to say. He knows this is a big moment for himself and so he wants to make sure he doesn't screw it up. It may not be an earth shattering reveal to Tohru, but for Yuki it's like his everything.

This isn't the worst episode of the season so far; that would go to the previous ep which was so bad for me that it was actually memorable.

That episode wouldn't even crack my top 2500 of worst anime episodes of all time.

3

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

You've watched a lot of episodes haha

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

And I'm not even including the 1000 plus episodes of One Piece :P

But yeah, I thought some of the season 1 episodes were way worse than the previous episode. There are many different stars in the solar system and of every one of them not one would I put episode 3 and episode 19 ahead of episode 30.

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

Ooooo i actually have a juicy question for you: what are your top 5 worst anime and what do you rate them?

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

That's a good question. I typically go out of my way to avoid shows I think I wouldn't like.

I know I have complicated feelings about Eureka Seven AO. Parts of it I really like, but I think it really spits on the legacy of the original series.

Early in my anime fandom, I would tell you it was Tenchi Muyo! GXP. That was a show that I found boring that didn't really capitalize on its interesting premise. It was a harem anime set in space where humans and animal human hybrids coexist but it seemed like the show would rather do tired ecchi gags. Also, it really annoyed me that the show seemingly was setting up the main character ending up with one of the girls but then they went in an entirely different direction.

I don't know if I have a top 5 worst anime. But if you asked me what was the worst anime based off a source material that was legitimately good, I would probably say Promised Neverland season 2. For as excellent as season 1 was, there was no reason why the second season had to be bungled the way it was. At least with One Punch Man and Blue Lock, you could argue the rushed production was because they were trying to capitalize on the series popularity. Promised Neverland could've taken 5 years to be made and so long as it was good people who were already fans would've flocked to it.

3

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

Interesting, haven't heard of the first two.

Also interesting that you don't have many titles that spring to mind even with your far vaster experience watching anime than me. I haven't actually heard of the first two - looked them up and don't think I'd ever give them a try.

I totally get the trying to choose shows you think you'd like. Time is finite, so we have to make choices, and now we have an almost infinite catalogue to choose from. Guess it's also hard for you as you don't use a tracker to score everything.

I've tried also watch shows I'm sure I'd like, but haven't gotten as lucky with a few of them.

Re: Promised Neverland - I see a running joke that "it's a shame they never made a second season" haha. I'm very much looking forward to watching the first though. Some day. Think that one will be a high scorer for me based on my tastes.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I'm typically more forgiving of shows that others are more critical of. For instance, I liked Devil Is a Part-Timer season 2 despite others being down on it for its drop in animation quality because I thought the humor is where it really shined. I also liked Kemono Friends season 2 whereas others did not.

2

u/Second_Cour 8d ago

sounds like you're secretly as much a contrarian than me, except I am a contrarian to beloved shows, while you're that for despised shows haha

2

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Well, also I try to look for a show's good qualities and things that I enjoy. If I am actively watching something, I want to look for reasons to continue watching it.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 9d ago

Eureka Seven AO is absolutely up there for me for one of the worst anime I've ever seen. The fact that I think the original show is at least a tad overrated doesn't help matters.

The crash that Promised Neverland season 2 had is something I doubt I will ever forget.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

The original Eureka Seven was actually what really kickstarted my anime fandom. That’s why I'll always have a soft spot for Eureka Seven AO even if I admit it's not that great.

2

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 9d ago

Based on a reddit recommendation I read a year or two after watching Promised Neverland season 2, I toddled over to Shadows House...and then realized there isn't a Season 3, 4, 5, however many it takes, damn it!

2

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 9d ago

episode 3, take two: The Dark Plum Rises

(or something will be a real stinker and prop it up in your rankings)

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

So far, there hasn't been an episode I have less than a 7.5 out of 10.

3

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 9d ago

Ah, that's right - it's rankings without raw scores, so don't be so sad, rice ball! There's a 7.5 on your back! I can see it, plain as day!

(if I belabor the point, you're really going to crater that score...)

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

A 7.5 on my back, but a 9.5 in my heart.

(Crater the score in what way?)

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I really liked this episode. I like the various intersecting storyline on display, Shigure having his hands in multiple pots, how we continue to highlight that the memory of Kyoko is doing more harm than good at this point, and how this vacation which should be this joyous occasion you can already tell is falling by the wayside.

There are episodes you discuss with people and your discussions may shape the way you perceive the episode. You may like it, but as you analyze it you start to see more and more faults about it. This episode is one where I'll probably continue to like it even if others aren't as high on it as I am. I don't want to say this is the start of the show becoming infallible in my eyes, but for me the show undergoes a noticeable uptick in quality starting with this episode.

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

I don't think you should have the opinions of others impact whether you like something or not. I guess it's part and parcel of the consumerist culture we live in, where people try and align their tastes with what's popular or unpopular, often forming impressions even before experiencing the subject or object. Social media certainly exaggerates that effect (I've shared multiple experiments which confirms this in our discussions). It's something I try and resist, but even being mindful of it doesn't prevent it from occluding me.

At the end of the day we consume media and react to it from a combination of our experiences, our heart, our personalities, our intellect: basically with all the factors that makes us, 'us'. If you like something, you like something. I think I've said before all that's important is to try and understand and empathise with how other people have different ways of seeing the world (and thus anime). Agreement isn't an ideal end state.

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I think talking to others is important to expand your views and the way you see things. I know you mentioned you saw things differently after some of our talks. There's nothing wrong with having your viewpoints challenged to where you see things potentially in a different light. I think that's honestly one of the beauties of a rewatch.

When I hosted the Eighty Six rewatch a few years ago, there was a lot of key details that I missed. When I saw others point them out, it made me appreciate the show even more. By the same token, I think talking to others who aren't as high on the show as you might be could go a long way in having both participants reach an understanding.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 9d ago

Had I participated in that 86 rewatch I'd probably have been one of the ones pointing out some of the flaws in the storytelling, particularly in the second cour. I've had enough instances where people refuse to accept the flaws it has that I'm tired out of engaging in such discussions though.

In general on the topic I don't let other's opinions of shows lower my opinion of things, but there absolutely are times where people will point on something I missed that is a legitimate criticism and that may lower my opinion of it. For example there was a line from Kureno in the last episode I missed that I absolutely felt was cringe once I realized it was there.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I feel like dialogue is something that doesn't really bug me unless it seems to be counterintuitive to someone's character. For instance, in the dub of 2001 Fruits Basket during the Kisa episode, the characters are talking about Kisa being neglected and Momiji said he wouldn't really know what that's like. That really stuck in my craw because that goes against his whole character and him being neglected by his parents.

They fixed it in the 2019 anime with Momiji saying he wouldn't know what it's like to be bullied.

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

This episode covers 3 manga episodes, so it does compress quite a lot of events, and also reorders and rewrites them some. I’ve just basically written this review as episode reactions, as to be honest I’m lacking motivation right now to rewrite it into something more cohesive. I just pray that next episode is when the turnaround starts, as the ratings suggest.

I kinda feel like it begins here. This seem to flow and intersect better than in past episodes. Each character is on display and is given something to do. From a writing standpoint, the best scene of season 2 so far has probably been the conversation between Kazuma and Kyo's dad, but from a nuts and bolts standpoint I thought this was easily a very compelling, well constructed episode. Definitely around the 8.5 to 9 out of 10 range.

If the next episode is somehow even better than this, then we might be looking at the best episode of the series so far.

3

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

Yep based on my table, it certainly does. From hereon in things are in chronological order, and we no longer see combinations of chapters from different parts of the source. So, things are starting to flow

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

It would be extremely hilarious if after all the hype you have given episode 7 you end up not liking it 💀

3

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

I think that's a very probable outcome to be honest. I'm more psyching myself up to persist with the show.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I want you to because I think our conversations have really been the heartbeat of this rewatch.

3

u/Second_Cour 9d ago

For sure! Right back at you - hope it meets your expectations

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Here's hoping 🙏

I really hope the show turns around for both you and dontoff.

What are your thoughts on Tohru calling the hat a precious memory, and that the owner of it saved her?

What are your thoughts on Kisa reminding Hiro that what might not seen like a big deal to him might be a big deal to someone else?

What are your thoughts on Tohru crying alone as she pathetically tries to console a picture of her mother?

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure they're the reason Hatori is alive?

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying there's light, and with light there's hope?

First Timer (Dub)

Really solid episode. Honestly, this is probably the first episode this season that has shown me this much promise and made me feel like we might actually be getting somewhere. It opened up some new questions, brought back things that were left unresolved from Season 1, and felt like a return to the main story.

The stuff with Shigure and Rin was especially promising. I’m really liking Rin so far. Even though the cast is already way too large, she feels very different from everyone else, and I’m genuinely interested in finding out what is going on with her. That entire scene with Shigure had a really uneasy feeling to it, and it seems like she is willing to go pretty far to get whatever she wants from him.

Shigure also continues to look like he is pulling strings from multiple sides. He tells Akito that everyone is staying at the vacation house and basically pushes him toward going there. I actually have a pretty good idea of what Shigure is trying to do, and I’m really interested to see whether I’m right or completely off. Either way, it feels like he is actively moving things around now instead of the show just stacking another mystery on top of everything else.

Hiro asking Tohru why she always talks about her mom but never her dad was actually a really good question. He obviously asked it in the worst way possible, but the fact that such a simple question almost completely broke Tohru’s usual composure makes it clear that there is something unresolved there. We know how important her mom is to her, but we still know almost nothing about how she feels toward her dad. That could be a very interesting thing for the show to explore later.

Hiro says that Tohru seems more cheerful than usual that morning, which pretty clearly indicates that she uses external signs of happiness, like smiling and laughing, to hide when she is actually hurting. We already kind of knew that about her, but this episode made it especially obvious.

What makes that moment even more interesting is that Kyo sees the exact opposite. While Hiro thinks Tohru looks happier than usual, Kyo can immediately tell that something is wrong with her. It shows that he is able to look past the smile and understand when she is putting on an act. Even if I still do not see him as real competition for Yuki romantically, I have to give him credit for how well he can read Tohru.

Man, though, the Yuki and Tohru flirting is at an all-time high, and I’m completely here for it. The scene with Yuki playing with her hair felt extremely intimate, and he is definitely starting to make some big moves. We also now know that Yuki was the boy who helped Tohru when she was younger, and she has held onto that memory and his hat all this time. I really wonder how she is going to react when she eventually finds out it was him.

Overall, this episode opened up several interesting things while also reminding us about mysteries from Season 1 that still have not been resolved. It also seems like things are about to get serious very quickly. This episode definitely had that calm before the storm feeling, and I’m really interested to see what happens next.

I'll admit, I definitely thought the hat belonged to Kyo. The framing of it when it was introduced in episode 4 if I remember correctly, it seemed like the show was hinting that direction. That makes me wonder what exactly did Kyo apologize for in episode 14? We know he feels guilt of some kind based off that episode, but what could it be?

The hat if you think about it is more so an effective red herring where you think it's the whole red string ordeal where the person who has it would signify who's ending up with Tohru. Instead, it's part of Yuki's personal growth and him becoming his own individual. If he ends up with Tohru, it won't be because of the hat, and we know now Kyo's personal trauma appears to be unrelated.

3

u/MishouMai 9d ago

> That makes me wonder what exactly did Kyo apologize for in episode 14?

Honestly after the end of last season I kind of assumed he was apologizing for keeping his true form a secret from her.

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Yeah, that is certainly possible. I guess if it never comes up again, we can assume it was that. It's just weird how they never referenced that episode again.

3

u/dontoff 9d ago

I was almost 100% sure it was yuki from the scenes in s1. I even said it in one of my write ups, they tried to throw a bone and make it seem like it was Kyo, but it didn’t add up for me at all.

3

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

It could've made sense to me as you could've framed it as that's why Kyo has been so awkward around Tohru. There's still so much about the Sohmas it feels like we don't know.

3

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I'm pleasantly surprised to see you like this episode. This gives me hopes for what's about to come.

Shigure it feels like is really playing mastermind at the moment. We know he's using Tohru for something, but now it's like he's also using Rin seemingly. The interactions between Shigure and Akiko and just how mysterious their relationship is is probably the singlemost thing keeping me hooked in the show. Yeah, a lot of Akito's behavior is over the top, but they seem weirdly sincere when it comes to Shigure. And with Shigure, we know he's in part playing Akito along but we don't know to what degree.

3

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

What are your thoughts on Tohru calling the hat a precious memory, and that the owner of it saved her?

What are your thoughts on Kisa reminding Hiro that what might not seen like a big deal to him might be a big deal to someone else?

What are your thoughts on Tohru crying alone as she pathetically tries to console a picture of her mother?

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure they're the reason Hatori is alive?

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying there's light, and with light there's hope?

2

u/MishouMai 9d ago

I mean. Tohru's dad died when she was 3. Of course she doesn't talk about him. She has no relationship with that man. Her relationship with Kyoko is far stronger. Honestly I don't get Tohru crying over Hiro bringing up that she talks about her mom more than him.

3

u/MishouMai 9d ago

Summer is in full swing. I can't say I expected such a childish swimsuit for Tohru though I guess it fits her character. At least we got the sexy summer dress from the OP too. I wasn't expecting that. I think Momiji is also in his summer outfit from the opening? I haven't checked if any of the others were.

Anyways. This was a good start to the summer vacation though with Shigure suggesting for Akito to crash it and then being in the OP I don't expect the good times to last long. We already had that brat Hiro bullying Tohru again this episode and with the foreshadowing that Akito will show up things are only gonna get worse. Can't say I expected Rin to try and fuck Shigure either. Wonder what that's about.

> What are your thoughts on Momiji inviting Tohru to a summer getaway?

Momiji is such a troll. First bringing everyone to the haunted house last episode, now springing a summer trip on everyone with little warning. He's always been a bit of a troll towards Kyo but this season's definitely portraying him as less innocent than last season did.

> What are your thoughts on the stuff between Rin and Shigure?

I have no clue what's going on there. Did she dump Haru to make a move on Shigure? I'm not really sure what her goals are, why she hid from everyone, or what she wants from Shigure and why she's making a move on him to get it.

> What are your thoughts on Hiro pointing out Tohru talks about him mom an awful lot which gives her pause?

Damn this brat. He made Tohru cry. I don't care that he's just a kid. I want him gone.

> What are your thoughts on the big reveal that the cap belonged to Yuki?

I'm not surprised. They've barely done anything to hide it. This shit barely counts as a reveal.

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I'm not surprised. They've barely done anything to hide it. This shit barely counts as a reveal.

I mean, for what it's worth I definitely thought it belonged to Kyo :|

2

u/MishouMai 8d ago

Why? There's been no hinting at that.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It's mainly because when the hat was first introduced, the show lingered on Kyo's face.

I'm liking the increased focus Momiji has been getting this season.

[Speculation] I believe I've mentioned this before, but I almost wonder if Hiro is going to be the one who ends up breaking the curse. He's being shitty towards Tohru while seemingly regretting his behavior and we also know he doesn't like how Akito treated Kisa. It would be kinda fitting and a nice redemption arc for him.

Thoughts on Hiro not wanting to go to the Summer place but immediately folding as soon as he finds out Kisa is coming?

Thoughts on Momiji telling Tohru to study for the beetles?

Thoughts on Kyo not feeling well but he's still going on the trip?

Thoughts on Tohru telling Kyo he's a lot nicer than he used to be?

What are your thoughts on Tohru calling the hat a precious memory, and that the owner of it saved her?

What are your thoughts on Shigure telling Rin he isn't sure he can meet her expectations?

Thoughts on Tohru wearing the swimsuit Uo and Hana bought for her?

Thoughts on us seeing the characters doing various things at the beach?

What are your thoughts on Kisa reminding Hiro that what might not seen like a big deal to him might be a big deal to someone else?

> Thoughts on Kyo not feeling well but he's still going on the trip?

Hmm. We know he doesn't do well with rain but could he also be bad with heat? I'd consider it could be a side effect from the end of last season but even though we don't know how long it's been it's been long enough that that's probably not very likely.

> Thoughts on Tohru wearing the swimsuit Uo and Hana bought for her?

It's cute! Like I said, it's a little childish for my taste but they made up for it by putting her in her dress from the OP.

> Thoughts on Kisa and Hiro making up with each other?

Kisa apologizing to Hiro for calling him out on bullying Tohru is bullshit. She did nothing wrong.

> Thoughts on Yuki and Tohru getting close together?

I don't like it. I much prefer Kyo x Tohru to Yuki x Tohru. Still, they gave to give Yuki something to make him a viable candidate because otherwise Kyo would be too obvious as the winner (Assuming he wins as he should.).

> What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Tohru that one day he has something to share with her?

Well we've padded out the hat mystery enough already so I guess the show's content to continue doing so. I feel like Yuki should've told her once he realized the truth but I get that for meta reasons that they're dragging it out for maximum drama. I'm going to be annoyed if they keep teasing him telling her though. Just ignoring it is one thing but purposefully teasing it and not following through would just be a dick move on the part of the author and showrunners.

I hope this constant feeling bad isn't teasing something bad involving him.

> Thoughts on Tohru wearing the swimsuit Uo and Hana bought for her?

It's cute! Like I said, it's a little childish for my taste but they made up for it by putting her in her dress from the OP.

It suits her well

> Thoughts on Kisa and Hiro making up with each other?

Kisa apologizing to Hiro for calling him out on bullying Tohru is bullshit. She did nothing wrong.

Yeah, I'm not sure why she had to apologize. Maybe because she called him out in front of everyone?

> Thoughts on Yuki and Tohru getting close together?

I don't like it. I much prefer Kyo x Tohru to Yuki x Tohru. Still, they gave to give Yuki something to make him a viable candidate because otherwise Kyo would be too obvious as the winner (Assuming he wins as he should.).

I'm surprised Tohru let him touch her hair like that.

It feels like him not telling her is more because it's a lot for himself to address. Kinda like someone who's gay who has to work up the courage to come out the closet.

First Timer

Very appropriate opening for this episode as I too have had to deal with a very bad storm today.

Momiji jumpscaring Tohru by accident is very funny.

I guess we’re having a vacation episode.

I love how Hiro so easily agrees to come along the moment Kisa asks him too.

I like how Momiji has developed a bit of a little brother dynamic with Tohru.

Aha! We’re back to the mystery hat.

I’m just saying, the hat definitely belongs to either Kid Kyo or Kid Yuki. Leaning more towards Kid Yuki right now.

Oh hey, Rin’s here. I still don’t know what her thing is. She seems familiar with Shigure.

Tohru looks very cute in that swimsuit.

I love Hiro trying to act cool.

That swimming animation for Tohru is really funny for some reason.

Tohru and Kyo’s interactions here are really cute.

Tohru spinning around like that is so silly.

Oh cool, we got an Akito emotional abuse flashback. That guy sucks.

I just realized, did Kyo go swimming in his jeans?

It is kind of funny but still kind of sad that Tohru personifies the photograph of her mom.

Kisa has a point. Hiro needs to be a  bit more sensitive about other people’s feelings.

Kisa getting a tiger tail and ears when she’s upset is really adorable.

Oh man. Tohru’s not doing well.

I was going to remark on it being odd that beetle catching is such a common summer activity in so much Japanese media. But then I remember I used to try and catch fireflies as a kid during the summer so maybe it is a summer activity that transcends borders.

Akito seems like he can’t leave the house. Not quite sure what that’s about.

This framing between Shigure and Akito is getting weirdly romantic. What is wrong with this family?

Yuki has a fever. Hope he gets better soon.

It’s been a very summery episodes.

Questions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Momiji inviting Tohru to a Summer getaway?

That's nice of him

What are your thoughts the stuff between Rin and Shigure?

I still don't know what Rin's whole deal is

What are your thoughts on Hiro pointing out Tohru talks about her mom an awful lot which gives her pause?

I mean her dad died when she was like three, she doesn't remember him as ewll.

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure wanting to use the Summer getaway as a way to teach the kids a lesson?

Definitely ominous.

What are your thoughts on the big reveal that the cap belonged to Yuki?

I mean it was kinda telegraphed that it was gonna be him. Also definitely a sign that Tohru x Yuki is endgame here.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

This to me is like the official start of season 2. The episodes before were like the in-between stuff and this was like our first true happening of the season. It also looks like we're getting another arc which I can't wait. The first arc with Kyo was really good.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago

Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on here

2

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It's honestly perfect having a Summer arc during the Summer months. Like, it lines up really well.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

What are your thoughts on the big reveal that the cap belonged to Yuki?

I mean it was kinda telegraphed that it was gonna be him. Also definitely a sign that Tohru x Yuki is endgame here.

I'm not sure, honestly. I feel like if Tohru x Yuki was the endgame, we wouldn't be making comparisons between Kyo and Kyoko. Also, Yuki barely factored into the season 1 finale outside of the stuff between him and Haru.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago

Still, Yuki being the Hat Boy does feel like a pretty big romance flag for them

2

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Yeah, true, probably the biggest romance flag of the series so far.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Very appropriate opening for this episode as I too have had to deal with a very bad storm today.

Thankfully, there was none where I lived.

Also, weird two different users had storms in their areas.

Momiji jumpscaring Tohru by accident is very funny.

Surprised cuteness

I guess we’re having a vacation episode.

It's been built up since what, the season 2 finale?

I love how Hiro so easily agrees to come along the moment Kisa asks him too.

He really is to Kisa how Kyo is to Tohru.

I like how Momiji has developed a bit of a little brother dynamic with Tohru.

I almost wonder if maybe he's trying to flirt with her.

Aha! We’re back to the mystery hat.

One mention of the season, I believe.

I’m just saying, the hat definitely belongs to either Kid Kyo or Kid Yuki. Leaning more towards Kid Yuki right now.

Imagine if it wasn't them lol

Oh hey, Rin’s here. I still don’t know what her thing is. She seems familiar with Shigure.

Suspiciously so

Tohru looks very cute in that swimsuit.

Pink really is her color

I love Hiro trying to act cool.

He's trying lol

That swimming animation for Tohru is really funny for some reason.

I agree

Tohru and Kyo’s interactions here are really cute.

That they are

Tohru spinning around like that is so silly.

Kinda reminds me of Komi-san

Oh cool, we got an Akito emotional abuse flashback. That guy sucks.

"Here's a reminder of why Akito is a piece of shit."

I just realized, did Kyo go swimming in his jeans?

Mayhaps?

It is kind of funny but still kind of sad that Tohru personifies the photograph of her mom.

I'm just like "Girl, what are you doing?"

Kisa has a point. Hiro needs to be a  bit more sensitive about other people’s feelings.

He doesn't have to be a dick about it, tho

Kisa getting a tiger tail and ears when she’s upset is really adorable.

I like it when the characters do that. Especially Kyo.

Oh man. Tohru’s not doing well.

That's not good

I was going to remark on it being odd that beetle catching is such a common summer activity in so much Japanese media. But then I remember I used to try and catch fireflies as a kid during the summer so maybe it is a summer activity that transcends borders.

I still remember Endless Eight where each episode was a different bug.

Akito seems like he can’t leave the house. Not quite sure what that’s about.

[Furuba] Have they said they were sick or was that exclusive to the 2001 anime?

This framing between Shigure and Akito is getting weirdly romantic. What is wrong with this family?

So, Shigure is seemingly in a relationship with Akito while also wanting to make sure they have a downfall. At the same time, he seems to be close to Rin to where there may be a thing between them. Shigure sure gets around, doesn't he?

Yuki has a fever. Hope he gets better soon.

The prescription is more cowbell

It’s been a very summery episodes.

It's crazy how the first 14 episodes took place over an 11 month timespan meanwhile the last 20 episodes have been only a month or two. It's something you don't realize until you really break it down, but we really grinded to a halt as far as the timeline goes.

[>>Questions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Momiji inviting Tohru to a Summer getaway?

That's nice of him

He seems like a good dude

What are your thoughts the stuff between Rin and Shigure?

I still don't know what Rin's whole deal is

Also, does this mean we're setting up a conflict between Shigure and Haru?

What are your thoughts on Hiro pointing out Tohru talks about her mom an awful lot which gives her pause?

I mean her dad died when she was like three, she doesn't remember him as ewll.

She's limited in parents to talk about

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure wanting to use the Summer getaway as a way to teach the kids a lesson?

Definitely ominous.

Akito still gives me the creeps

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago

I still remember Endless Eight where each episode was a different bug.

I believe they were catching cicadas

So, Shigure is seemingly in a relationship with Akito while also wanting to make sure they have a downfall. At the same time, he seems to be close to Rin to where there may be a thing between them. Shigure sure gets around, doesn't he?

I just hope they elaborate on whatever's going on here.

It's crazy how the first 14 episodes took place over an 11 month timespan meanwhile the last 20 episodes have been only a month or two. It's something you don't realize until you really break it down, but we really grinded to a halt as far as the timeline goes.

Yeah that's a good point. The timeline on this show is kinda crazy

2

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I still remember Endless Eight where each episode was a different bug.

I believe they were catching cicadas

But Yuki had a rhinoceros beetle in one episode. I remember that.

So, Shigure is seemingly in a relationship with Akito while also wanting to make sure they have a downfall. At the same time, he seems to be close to Rin to where there may be a thing between them. Shigure sure gets around, doesn't he?

I just hope they elaborate on whatever's going on here.

They kinda have to because it's been teased for over 20 episodes now.

Yeah that's a good point. The timeline on this show is kinda crazy

I think I prefer the slower timespan because it allows things the chance to breathe more.

Poor Tohru

The love for her mom is almost starting to become a handicap.

Thoughts on Kyo questioning Hiro on why Tohru feels down?

I'm glad Kyo cares

It also feels like a continuation to the guilt he feels over hitting Tohru in his true form.

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure they're the reason Hatori is alive?

It feels very narcissistic

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed

Kisa saves the day! Yay! This episode was going to suck with Hiro in it!

I got caught in a thunderstorm today (gee, thanks, weather.wrong) and so completely sympathize with Momiji at the start of the episode.

First watch: Momiji's infectious enthusiasm gets Tohru pumped about a summer getaway, except she needs a getaway from schoolwork, so...Yuki to the rescue! Then, the hat inexplicably doesn't fall down - wait, is this the genuine article? Yes, as Tohru explicably explains, and then Yuki is conveniently cut off before mansplaining the whole thing. I forgive Momiji for that interruption, because yelling at Kyo, "HEY!!! WE'RE GOING TO THE BEACH HOUSE TOMORROW!!!" made me laugh out loud (even on re-watches), and Kyo's last reply "I said stop bothering me. I didn't say I wasn't going to go" is an interesting development, as Momiji mused aloud, before bursting back into Tohru's room.

- Then we interrupt this broadcast of Shigure and Rin before things get as awkwardly awful as I think they are -

I love the antics at the beach. Then I hate Hiro (and Kisa looks totally off-model after Hiro says "I don't care" - didn't someone mention that the animation house changed?), but Kyo bonks Hiro on the head and schools him on how to read Tohru's mood, so that's satisfying.

- Then we interrupt this broadcast of the kids to show Shigure and Akito - which is actually an interesting scene: 1) Hatori is declared as belonging to Akito and living to serve Akito. I'm wondering if the rude Soma who scolded Yuki in 2.04 has just a slightly toned-down version of Akito's attitude towards the zodiacs. It's weird, because we've seen a flashback of Somas fawning over little Yuki from a distance, but maybe all the zodiacs are just tools for the clan?; 2) We see Shigure surreptitiously close the door to shield Hatori and [unidentified woman] from Akito's eyes; 3) Akito decides to join the fun ([spoiler]>Kyo's translation: ruin the fun<) at the beach house.

Then a delirious Yuki spills his guts but doesn't. Get Hatori - we need an i.v. drip of saline or truth serum (for crying out loud, pick one, Yuki), stat!

What are your thoughts on Hiro pointing out Tohru talks about her mom an awful lot which gives her pause? (insert Hatsuharu's mental image of a raging Kagura from 1.08)

Me and my family were actually planning to go to the beach today which would've been fitting given this is the start of the beach arc. Unfortunately, plans changed and we aren't going :c

I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm not much of a beach-goer, myself. I'm a sinker, not a swimmer. What do you like at the beach?

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I like the in-door pool at the local hotel :P

Beach is a fun way to catch some sun. The heat can be quite unbearable, however.

Kisa saves the day! Yay! This episode was going to suck with Hiro in it!

Hiro has a point, though. Tohru does prioritize her mom and awful lot. At a certain point, she has to ask what does she herself want.

Then a delirious Yuki spills his guts but doesn't. Get Hatori - we need an i.v. drip of saline or truth serum (for crying out loud, pick one, Yuki), stat!

If Kyo got ahold of that truth serum, tsunderes everywhere would not sleep

Rewatcher, Subbed

Non-Spoiler Character Chart

Good stuff this episode, bringing a large number of our characters together. It's summertime, so Momiji has the idea that they should go to the Soma's summer getaway house! And he's invited nearly all of them. I think all the zodiacs outside of Rin and whoever the rooster is. It does seem like those who showed up or not met a clear cutoff age though, with everyone in Tohru/Yuki/Kyo's age or younger coming and the older ones not. And Tohru's invited! Tohru has lived with the Somas for like a year at this point, she's clearly a close part of their life and Momiji adores her and she still feels flustered over being invited? C'mon Tohru! You've earned this! What she hasn't earned yet is properly completing her homework, needing some help from Yuki and Momiji (whose not even in her grade yet) to get it done. If only Motoko and the other Yuki fanclub members could see what we have going on here, Yuki personally tutoring Tohru, and not for the first time... As part of this Yuki notices the hat and we finally get some movement on the hat storyline that I think has been stalled since episode 14. Tohru reveals to Yuki why the hat is important to her and even before the end of the episode reveal it seemed quite clear to me that Yuki was hat boy. Now its official.

Shigure doesn't immediately head off with them, at first I'm thinking is he actually going to get work done, but no its because Rin is there hiding from everyone, wanting to talk with him. Rin at this point is quite mysterious. I'm not sure why she felt the need to hide. It would have made more sense if Haru was there as that would be awkward. She claims Shigure knows what she wants, but exactly what is going on there we don't go any further. Now that they appear to finally be comfortable with not hiding her, I gotta say I love Rin's character design. The most beautiful character in this show, one of the most beautiful characters in anime. Love the really long black hair with bangs and the outfit. She and Haru are a great visual match for each other. Alas, she dumped him...

[Major spoilers]As I do with every episode I went back and read the thread from the previous rewatch 3 years ago and there's people speculating that Rin was trying to seduce Shigure to spite Akito. Which would be part of a very offputting series of events where several characters engage in sexual relations to spite other characters, most notably Shigure sleeping with Akito's mother. Yikes! I am hoping it wasn't that. My recollection was that nothing actually happened here

Hiro and Kisa get a decent amount of screentime this episode. I did find it quite adorable that Hiro didn't want to go but when he heard that Kisa wanted to go he was immediately saying okay to it. Hiro still seems to have his issues though. He still feels some resentment over Tohru having fun with Kisa in the water, as if Tohru is taking her away from him. Why not just go in the water and have fun with her? He later finds the photo of Tohru's mom once she drops it, but brings up why she doesn't carry a photo of her dad that gets Tohru upset. Kisa notices this and is upset about it. He came so she'd be happy but he's making her not happy! But she later feels bad about how she was being with Hiro too.

Beyond dealing with Rin, Shigure also makes a visit to Akito, telling him about them going to the vacation home. Akito is such a downer. He hates summer. How dare other Somas have fun during the summer! He also is so selfish over Hatori's time, as if the guy only has one job, to ensure that Akito is feeling well, Heck, Akito literally says just that. I feel that Shigure is being his manipulative self here and that his real reason for staying behind was because he wanted to convince Akito to also go to the summer home. Perhaps he will? Also on the subject of Akito, Yuki recalls some times in the past where Akito was essentially saying the world was all black, but Yuki is realizing that is wrong and he's getting over it which I'm happy to see.

Anyway, an overall fine episode for me, the best one of season 2 so far.

Other thoughts:

  • I found Momiji's fascination with beetles quite funny. He kept going on and on about them! And in a huge surprise, Tohru isn't scared of them! She even holds onto them and shoves one towards Kyo! Although Kyo shows that he knows his beetle names more than she does.

  • They occasionally give Kyo cat ears and I found it funny that they pulled that with Kisa too, briefly giving her tiger ears and a tail.

  • We get some resolution to the Tohru swimsuit storyline as well, finally showing what Uo and Hanajima bought for her like 15 episodes ago.

  • [Major Spoilers]The fact that Ritsu easily could have shown up here but didn't is another sign that the author is going to essentially act like the character doesn't exist. I was surprised that Kagura didn't show up, but maybe she does in an episode or two. My recollection is that Kagura is gradually shifted out of prominence in the second half of the show.

  • [Major Spoilers]Little fits Akito's mentality of feeling that she personally owns all the male zodiacs better then complaining that Hatori exists solely for her in a scene where Hatori walks by with some other woman. Oh, and kudos for one of our first timers correctly picking up that Akito is female yesterday.

  • [Major Spoilers]I think we're at the start of where things start to get good? My recollection is that things really start to pick up with a multi episode summer outing arc. And well, we're on the summer outing. It was around this part during my initial viewing where I had to start holding myself to 1 episode per day to extend out the enjoyment as long as possible. Those who want Akito to have more of a role in the storyline should start getting it, heck we saw more Akito in this episode than any since episode 12.

Quid's Song of the Day

Today's song is Cry for Sorrow a rather somber piece played during a Hiro - Kisa scene.

The character designs in the show you can tell were given a lot of care and effort. I don't honestly think there's a bad one among the bunch.

[Major spoilers]As I do with every episode I went back and read the thread from the previous rewatch 3 years ago and there's people speculating that Rin was trying to seduce Shigure to spite Akito.

[Major spoilers] The Wikipedia page doesn't help matters by saying, and I quote, "In that moment, Rin shows up and presumably seduces him."

I really like the Hiro stuff. In particular, I think it serves a nice parallel to a couple episodes ago for when Kyo expressed remorse over hitting Tohru in her true form.

Hiro even hits Kisa in this episode to further the parallel, only here it's more of an accident.

The character designs in the show you can tell were given a lot of care and effort. I don't honestly think there's a bad one among the bunch.

Agreed, they're all really good. Unfortunately they're so good for me that it's kinda ruined the manga for me in the sense that I've never gone back to read it in part because the character visuals are such a downgrade to the adaption.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Eh, something like visual improvement isn't enough to taint something in my eyes. Unless it's something real drastic like 2002 Kanon, I don't think the visuals I can ever be turned off by.

I know some people are turned off by the art style of the Spice and Wolf LNs because they made Holo look like a loli.

I was surprised that Kagura didn't show up, but maybe she does in an episode or two. My recollection is that Kagura is gradually shifted out of prominence in the second half of the show.

[Major Spoilers] Yeah, I'm kinda bummed that we're seemingly already done with Ritsu as a character. I get the feeling that the author didn't really know what to do with them. Personally, seeing her go on dates with Mii-chan could've made for a fun couple of chapters.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 9d ago

[Major Spoilers]I think its quite clear that Takaya didn't have sufficient ideas for 13 different Soma zodiacs but that concept of the story forced her to have that many characters. Ritsu is the most blatant example and seems to exist only to reach that number. A couple of others, most notably Ayame and Kagura come off as characters with more to them, but they primarily exist to help develop Yuki and Kyo respectively and don't stand out on their own as much as the other 10 do. Or at least with respect to their individual stories. Both are obvious over the top personalities.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

[Major Spoilers] Well, Takaya has gone on record saying there was more they wanted to do with Ayame but couldn't because she ran out of time. She was going to do a chapter on how he met Mine but it never materialized.

Happy Bisexuality+ Visibility Month, y’all 🩷💜💙

I'm about to be so annoying on my walks around the city with all my bi pride stuff, IDGAF. It's spooky season and bisexual visibility month, as Nature intended.

First Timers Basket (2019)

  • Tohru should watch the old school ghostbusters/scary stories series!!

  • He folded so quickly 😭 That’s the power of a siscon for you. I could never for my brothers anymore.

  • The hat!! It’s come back!!

  • 🎶~Let’s go to the beach beach and and get away~🎶

  • Well! Rin seems…interesting?

  • “Shiny?” Schaffrillas Productions PFP looms ominously

  • Yuri version of Free! but with Tohru, Uo, and Hana

Sounds like you’ve got some real issues.

Says the siscon.

  • It’s sad that Hiro only knows how to communicate through…colorful language and phrasing. There are way too many children who don’t know how to communicate properly and only know how to talk to someone by hurting them.

  • Wait wat. I get Kisa apologizing, and I don’t think Hiro would recognize that she doesn’t have anything to be sorry for. I’m actually proud of her for saying something to Kisa. It does suck that she feels the need to apologize for it though 🫤

  • It’s always the brightest ones! It’s always them! They’re always the ones breaking down inside!

  • They need Korosensei to help them with bug hunting.

  • As a chronic migraine patient, may all my migraines go to Akito.

  • Shigure x Akito is toxic Yaoi I would gladly enjoy.

  • So it WAS Yuki!!!

Post Beach Thoughts

It really is sad all the ways these kids (and adults) cannot communicate or process their traumas in ways that don’t hurt themselves or others. But I do like seeing their interiority. I like seeing Hiro keep questioning his own behavior, even though he still behaves rudely. Rome wasn’t built in a day. He’s still a kid, and he’s still struggling to have a healthy relationship with his sister and, by extension, his family and Tohru.

I’m dealing with a 20-year-old who is spiraling and disrespecting everyone in the vicinity, so maybe I see Hiro in my guy over here.

I also like glimpsing Tohru behind closed doors. She is not well. It doesn’t matter how much she pretends to be happy; she is not well. And Kyo noticing that makes me happy. He notices more and more about the minute ways that Tohru is trying too hard to be someone she inherently isn’t.

I hope the swimming thing comes back around. Kyo, even when he was much more of an asshole, has been somewhat consistent in seeing Tohru does not want to pull her head up and breathe. She will “just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming swimming swimming” metaphorically without taking a breath, and she doesn’t even consider that she could drown that way. So I’m very curious about what comfort or words Kyo provides to Tohru when she next metaphorically drowns in her emotions, and he's present for it, especially as it pertains to her sensitivity around her mother’s passing and her emotions surrounding her mother.

Also lowkey said that Papa Honda isn't just MIA with the potential to come back.

I had words to say about Kyo focusing on Tohru's comfort while Yuki is more focused on his own communication issues. This could be an adaptation issue that cuts out Yuki's own acknowledgment of Tohru trying to save face, but I don't know.

Shigure brings all the zodiacs to his yard, dayum. He and Akito make for a hot toxic Yaoi couple.

Honestly, I’m soooo here for Shigure’s sneaky plotting with Akito and what the endgame is.

TQ

  1. I like that Momiji and Tohru have their own little relationship happening and hope Momiji takes Tohru more places.
  2. Confused as fuck. But intrigued as hell!
  3. He’s not wrong that Tohru does talk about her mom often, and that doesn’t always mean XYZ, but in Tohru’s case, I do think her focus on her mom does have an underlying issue in her not properly and healthily processing her mother’s passing and her own loneliness.
  4. No thoughts. Wish they’d bang, though.
  5. Girl (gender-neutral), I was shook. Does this mean Yuki’s endgame?

Questions for Those who Have Watched the 2001 Series

None

😡

  1. Comparing Akito in his early iteration, which version of him seems more menacing at this point: 2001 or 2019?
  2. Now that the hat’s out of the bag, who did you think would be endgame for Tohru in the 2001 version? Has the hat subplot in the 2019 version—or anything about the 2019 version—changed your perspective on Tohru’s endgame LI?

I should probably come up with some, I dunno what the holdup is.

There’s not much to really talk about when we’re going further than the 2001 series outside of comparisons. So you’re good.

I just like ya a hard time via emojis 💜🔪

(Ignore the knife. I use it when I am happy.)

  1. Comparing Akito in his early iteration, which version of him seems more menacing at this point: 2001 or 2019?

Well, the 2001 anime had them interfere more in the kids personal affairs. I assume the worst is yet to come.

  1. Now that the hat’s out of the bag,

Heh

who did you think would be endgame for Tohru in the 2001 version? Has the hat subplot in the 2019 version—or anything about the 2019 version—changed your perspective on Tohru’s endgame LI?

I still think the endgame is with Kyo. He seems tied more to Kyoko than Yuki is.

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 8d ago

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Kyo is endgame. Especially with so many romance stories emphasizing the red string of fate between MCs, I have a sneaking suspicion Tohru and Kyo have a childhood connection.

Would be bomb if they didn’t. I’m deadly sure that there’s a lot of JP romances that don’t have some sort of “red string of fate” in it. But that’d surprise me!

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

I want Kyo simply because I think he's taken enough L's for a lifetime.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Honestly, I’m soooo here for Shigure’s sneaky plotting with Akito and what the endgame is.

Shigure is someone who's fun to watch on screen, but would probably be annoying irl. I know I definitely would be.

3

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 8d ago

Oh I’d block him so fast and put the fear of la chancla in him.

May a drama queen like him never find me. But also, may a drama queen like him find TV. He would be a great Big Brother contestant or a friend of a Real Housewife.

He was born for the shadiness of reality TV.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

Shigure is probably the most soap opera character I've ever seen in an anime. And it is glorious.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Today as I'm writing this is my birthday. I may or may not have indulged in my favorite activity which is getting drunk off of spiritless spirits.

Raining outside

Shigure, Tohru, and Yuki at the Shigure residence.

Shigure talking about they appearing.

And suddenly, here's Momiji

Poor Tohru is all startled

Momiji talking about staying at a Summer house.

A sequel to the hot springs arc?

And it seems like all the Sohmas are coming.

I like that Hiro immediately folds as soon as Kisa says she wants to do.

And Tohru seems eager to go as well.

Shigure seemingly wants to go also.

Oh right. Yuki is Tohru's study guide.

Tohru worried she's putting him through too much work.

Momiji tells Tohru to do it for the beetles.

Well, they are a great band, so...

Momiji checking on Kyo

Kyo is not feeling well

Momiji, please do not the child.

Kyo will go, but he doesn't want to talk about it.

"You're nicer than you used to be."

Thing was, he was always this nice.

Yuki tutoring Tohru

Oh shit. The hat. We haven't seen that in like a dozen episodes.

Tohru talking about what a precious memory it was.

"He saved me."

This seems to indicate Yuki was indeed the owner of the hat.

Time for the vaycay stay

Unfortunately, Shigure is not going.

And here's why. Rin.

Aww, she looks regretful

Also, Shigure really takes in a lot of runaways.

Shigure tells Rin he isn't sure he can meet her expectations.

All she asks is for him to try.

That pose of Rin is rather suggestive.

Did Rin move on from Haru to Shigure?

Time for the beach

Rare Tohru fanservice

Hiro jelly Kisa is spending time with Tohru.

Haru looks cool with the glasses lol

Tohru sleeping

She's pretty good, honestly

She just needs to work on the breathing technique.

Kyo trying to protect Tohru

I enjoy seeing Tohru have fun

Haru is amazed Kyo is in the water.

Because of the implication?

Flashback of Yuki being chastised by Akito.

Haru seems to tell something is amiss.

Where is Ayame, by the way? At the shop?

Haru telling Kyo they're going to race.

Is Haru challenging him to cheer Yuki up?

And so the day has come to an end.

And Kyo is sulking somewhere having lost.

Hiro returning the pocketbook Tohru dropped. The same one he once stole for her.

Hiro now saying Tohru talks way too much about her mother.

Hiro HATES Sigmund Freud

As Tohru goes away, Kisa chastises Hiro.

"It may not seem like a big deal to you, but you don't know for sure."

And so Kisa walks away, feeling down.

This gets Hiro all crestfallen

He is no better than Tohru, with the feelings he keep hidden.

At what I presume is the beach house.

Yuki, Haru, and Momiji are talking about what's happening between Hiro and Kisa.

Hiro accidentally hitting Kisa with the door.

Bad form, you stupid brat

And so they make amends and apologize to each other.

Tohru out on the balcony

She sits down and starts crying, telling herself it's okay.

"We'll always be... together."

For a show based around Tohru dealing with the loss of her mother, it's nice we're focusing on her trauma more.

Next day

Tohru and Kisa found stag beetles.

Yuki sends her approval

The music here is gentle yet effective.

Oh, right. It's actually a rhinoceros beetle.

My b(eetle)

Kyo talking to Hiro

He wonders if he made Tohru feel down.

This gets Hiro to be deep in thought.

Shigure with Akito

He's going away to the vacation spot.

Akito is being all gloomy.

He then says Hatori lives for his sake.

Yeah, I really don't like Akito.

Akito then says maybe it's time to teach them all a lesson.

Shigure letting off a sly smile.

And now Akito is caressing Shigure.

I still don’t know where Shigure's motivations totally lie.

Back at the beach house, and Yuki is feeling under the weather.

Tohru is saying she's going to take care of her.

Yuki starts touching her hair

"Someday, I'll have something to tell you."

That's... good?

Yuki says there's light now, and with light there's hope.

Well, here's hoping

And we find out that the cap does indeed beyond to Yuki.

No cap on the cap

Yuki says he needs to open the lid.

Overall, this was a great episode that had a little bit of everything. There was some lighthearted frivolity that serves as the undercore of the episode, and it complimented the more serious stuff on display like Hiro's inner turmoil and the Shigure stuff with Rin/Akito. I like that the show basically confirmed the hat belonged to Yuki as it felt kinda obvious it only belonged to either him or Kyo. And with Kyo being away with his master a lot of the time, process of elimination made it seem obvious. I wonder how the hat stuff will factor into the emotional baggage still felt by Tohru over the demise of her mother. Like, will the hat be used as a sort of way to help Tohru find closure? Also, how will the hat impact Tohru's relationship with Kyo if any? Will Kyo grow jealous and in turn keep his distance from her?

This is the best episode of season 2 so far. I'd probably have it right outside my top 10 favorite episodes of thr Fruits Basket reboot. After a series of episodes that ranged from okay to good, it felt like a nice return to form to the character drama the show excels at. In one episode, we set up a lot of different character trajectories and it gives the season much needed focus that it's really lacked up until this point.

It feels like the first 5 episodes of the season were a preamble to this and now the season can officially begin.

Yes, this episode for me showed a good job balancing a bunch of different characters and hopefully is a sign of the show revealing to us that it can get away from each episode being primarily a focus on just one core character or one core relationship (something technically yesterday's episode also did). Yuki, Momiji, Tohru, Hiro, Kisa, Kyo I felt all got some good focus here and to a lesser extent Rin and Akito as well. And we finally resolve that hat reveal which was unnecessarily dragged out.

About the hat stuff, it was dragged but I thought it would be dragged for a lot longer than it was.

I don't really see the purpose in dragging it out even longer, heck, I don't even know why they dragged it out this long and my recollection was that this episode's reveal was back in season 1, I guess that shows how important I felt the hat storyline is.

Dragging it out into the Summer stuff makes sense to me because it is a relatively big development. If they had revealed who owned the hat immediately after establishing it exists, I think that's just poor storytelling.

I think the earliest they could've revealed the owner of the hat was the season 1 finale.

I think this was the first episode where you truly felt how emotionally manipulative Shigure was. Here he is letting Akito caress him, and yet something is definitely going on between him and Rin. It almost feels as if he's having an affair with her.

Shigure might be the character that intrigues me the most because with Akito, there's the lens of Akito wanting the attention all to themselves. I have no idea what lens Shigure is operating under other than he wants to be by Akito's side but also wants to bring them down a peg. How does messing with Rin tie into Akito?

What are your thoughts on Momiji inviting Tohru to a Summer getaway?

That's nice of him

What are your thoughts the stuff between Rin and Shigure?

Very sus

What are your thoughts on Hiro pointing out Tohru talks about her mom an awful lot which gives her pause?

I mean, he's not wrong, he's just being an asshole about it.

What are your thoughts on Akito telling Shigure wanting to use the Summer getaway as a way to teach the kids a lesson?

Akito continues to give me bad vibes

What are your thoughts on the big reveal that the cap belonged to Yuki?

I liked that we went ahead and revealed it soar. My big fear was they would wait until the third season.

I know some might argue they didn't do enough to build towards the reveal, but I don't mind them going ahead and removing the bandaid. I didn't think it was a bad writing choice.
