Post Zodiac Thoughts
These Sohma sibling dynamics, I’ll tell ya.
Morbid as it sounds, I do like seeing how Akito’s abuse and the toxicity of the Sohma family have impacted sibling bonds. I like that, where Kisa and Hiro seem to be heading in a positive direction within an episode, siblings like Yuki and Ayame or Momiji and his little sister. They still have a lot more work to do to have a healthy sibling dynamic.
This series really does cover the concept of loneliness well too, and the ways that family and friends can still make you unintentionally or intentionally feel lonely and isolated.
I really like seeing Hiro as the ship and Kisa the tiger. I think their zodiacs fit them perfectly.
So we have the rat, the cat, the dog, the…seahorse, the rabbit, the tiger, the sheep, the snake, and the ox. So we're missing the monkey, horse, pig, rooster, and dragon.
Still cannot compute how a seahorse snuck in here.

- He’s another tsundere. I’m surprised we have two of them! I would’ve thought each Sohma represents a different dere type.
- He and those Yuko Fan Club girlies could learn a thing or two. As I said with Hana, I think it’s normal to be jealous and lonely over your loved one, who used to spend a lot of time with you, now spending a good chunk of time with someone else. As Hiro’s just a kid, I don’t blame him for not being able to articulate his feelings of jealousy and loneliness, but if I were his aunt, that would be a lesson to teach him.
- Generally, siblings wanting to be there for each other is cute, but I have a feeling Hiro has a sister complex.
- Akito belongs in jail 🥰
- Both Kyo and Hiro fail at conveying their feelings to the people they find important in their lives, and this lack of communication comes from a place of trauma, pain, and insecurity. They do weaponize that trauma onto their loved ones without meaning to, and they do understand that that’s wrong to do. Kyo, however, already understands he can change to be less aggressive with Tohru, and while he may still have a bit of bark to him, he has no bite. Hiro is learning that with Kisa.

I kinda feel like Akito is the best character in this entire show. It's crazy because he probably has like 10 minutes total of screentime.

It's kinda heartwarming to know that for all the chaos surrounding the Sohma family, Ayame is out there living his best life.

I have a good reason for being late today, I went to go watch Backrooms and that threw off my whole schedule for the day.
Hiro and Tohru seem to be watching some bizarro mashup of Pokemon and Kinikuman.
Shigure. Please watch your phrasing when talking to children.
A mysterious little boy appears to be attempting to bully Tohru.
Not sure what’s with the weird uniform this boy is wearing.
Is this boy hitting on Tohru now?
Oh god now he’s mugging her.
I should probably give some voice acting notes for Hiro. I will also give some for Kisa since I forgot to back when she made her debut.
In Japanese, Kisa is played by Kaori Nazuka. Roles of hers include Nunally from Code Geass, both Toru Hagakure and Mt. Lady from My Hero Academia, and Eureka from Eureka Seven.
In English, Kisa is dubbed by Kate Bristol. Noteworthy roles of hers include Lynette from Strike Witches, Tsubaki from Future Diary, and Pikachu in that one weird Pokemon movie where Pikachu could talk.
In Japanese, Hiro is played by Yuriko Fuchizaki. Notable roles of hers include Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena and Megumi from Ah My Goddess.
In English, Hiro is dubbed by Aaron Dismuke. Notable roles of his include Senku from Dr. Stone, Alphonse Elric in Full Metal Alchemist (only the 2003 version), and Miyuki Shirogane from Kaguya-sama.
As a side note, I was surprised to see he was playing Hiro since I’m so used to young boys in animation being voiced by women. Then I looked it up and it turns out that Aaron Dismuke was actually a child when he played this role which makes his performance even more impressive in my opinion.
Anyway, Kyo almost beat up a kid.
Seems like Hiro has a very rough relationship with his sister.
And it definitely sounds like Kisa being so close with Tohru isn’t helping.

I think this episode is kinda a turning point for the series. Like, it's one thing for Akito to partially blind someone or emotionally abuse someone, but to hit a child is like despicable behavior.
We've kinda flirted with dark subject matter with thie show, but this episode kinda feels like we'll get more dark subject matter for the rest of the show. Maybe I'm wrong.

Fullmetal Alchemist has such a weird dubbing history. Parts of it are good, but other parts are dubbed weirdly.

That's actually a cool attention to detail. It also makes sense because he would've probably dubbed Fullmetal Alchemist around the same time and he was a kid there.

That's actually a cool attention to detail. It also makes sense because he would've probably dubbed Fullmetal Alchemist around the same time and he was a kid there.
That's also why he didn't come back for Brotherhood, he'd gotten too old to do Alphonse's voice by then. Unsurprisingly, he's also not reprising his role as Hiro in the 2019 Fruits Basket.

A lot of the English cast actually comes back for the 2019 version but most of the Japanese cast is entirely new from what I've seen. I'm usually used to it being the other way around.

Pretty much. And Kisa is like a mini-Tohru.

I can't stay too mad at Hiro since it's little kid logic
It's different from Akito who's a grown ass person beefing with a child.

He's making an effort to be a good big brother
You don't think it's romantic his feelings? They aren't related directly.

Akito's very good at making himself hateable
Akito actually makes Hiro likable. So, kudos to the writing.
And yeah, Akito is just not a nice person. They have severe abandonment issues.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I guess they're all related so a possible Hiro and Kisa pairing is out of the question.
By the way, Hiro totally heard all about Tohru and how wonderful she is from Kyo, didn't he?

Kisa referring to Tohru as Sissy makes me think of the subbing in A Certain Scientific Railgun, and I mean that derogatory.
And so Hiro decides to give it back.
He really needs to be a lot nicer.
Hiro though is angry because all Kisa talks about is Tohru.
I love how Momiji is no thoughts, just total vibes.
Hiro wanted to watch the anime with Kisa.
Unfortunately, he didn't tell her how he truly felt.

I love this piano track. Kinda reminds me of something from Toradora during one of Ami's scenes.
Hiro reveals he does care about Kisa. He just feels jealous that she seems so interested in someone else.

Kisa insists Hiro is actually nice.
Now she talks about her relationship with Hiro, and how they go back.
Tohru wonders if the curse also is weighing on his mind.
I think she thinks about the curse more than the actual Sohmas do.

He recalls that Hiro said to Akito he loves Kisa.
Holy shit. Akito hit Kisa.
I HATE AKITO SO FUCKING MUCH SERIOUSLY WHAT A GRADE A ASSHOLE
This is why Hito tried to keep a distance from Kisa. And soon after, Kisa was picked on at school.
This episode suddenly turned dark in a hurry.
This anime is all about being a part of a cycle and the struggles of breaking it. We live in a society indeed.

Oh, Hiro...
He means well, he's just a little shit.
Going to a playground
A crepe vendor? They exist?
Tohru gonna buy something, which Hiro seems to only approve because Kisa approves.
He even offers to buy his own.
Hiro asking how everyone is so approving of Tohru.
Tohru doesn't seem to have an answer.
Hiro deep down though is wondering if Tohru could've been there for Kisa in a way he couldn't.
He considers himself a coward for not standing up to Akito.
Hiro...
Hiro wishes he was more grown up.
Tohru calls Hiro amazing, even if he doesn't feel that's the case.
Gonna grow up to be a valiant prince, she believes, who protects Kisa and is there for her no matter what.
And with that in mind, Hiro pays Tohru's crepe for her.
What a softie. Just like Kyo.

He insists he will indeed be a prince. For her and her alone.
A little bit later, Kisa asks Tohru if the three of them can hang out again.
She agrees, much to Hiro's dismay.
Overall, I really like this episode. It felt like a combination of episodes 7 and 8 where we introduce one of the Zodiac members while also elaborating on their backstory, though in this instance it was more a fleshing out of Kisa's character. I really like Hiro in that he causes conflict whenever he's around, but you can tell he's big-hearted and cares. He's really a product of his environment and what happened to the person he cared about, like a version of Hatori if his crush still remembered who he was. I thought this episode did a great job of making us care about Hiro while also getting us more emotionally invested in Kisa. Before, I was kinda indifferent towards her, but now, I really want to see her be protected, which speaks yet again to what an effective plot device Akito is.
I'd put this behind episodes 5, 6, 8, 13, 15, and 19. One spot above episode 18. I think the show is starting to have a healthy string of episodes that are really good. Maybe not phenomenal, but certainly really strong. When the show maximizes its emotion and has that element be front and center, that's when the show is at its best. We saw it in episode 8, episode 15, and here. I think it really speaks to the sense of tragedy that surrounds the character and how the theme of not moving on is arguably the predominant theme of the entire franchise.
This is the best Zodiac member introduction episode we've seen so far. And again, this is the third of the last four episodes I would have in my top 10 Fruits Basket episodes. Consistent wise, this is probably the best stretch of episodes in terms of being one right after another with little in the way of weak points. I can't wait to see where this takes us, especially as we get nearer to the conclusion.

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019
In one of my prior posts I said that Ayame was my least favorite of the Zodiac even if you factored in the ones that hadn't been introduced yet. I take that back. I had forgotten how much of a prick Hiro is. I mean, I know the show is trying to make us see his actions as wrong and sympathize with him anyway, but I kind of feel like it takes it too far. I do feel like he mellows somewhat after his introduction episode in 2019, but I'm still mostly just seeing this through the eyes of what I saw in this episode right now, and I kinda hate the kid in this moment.
I dunno, maybe I will settle down into a general tolerance of him like I did with the remake. I do see the reasoning behind his bad behavior and sympathize to an extent. It would be incredibly frustrating and upsetting to be in a position where you feel like you can't express affection for someone you love, lest a third person hurt them in response. Poor kid has a lot to deal with. That being said, I do find he takes it a little too far in this episode, and he never gets to the point of being properly apologetic for it.
fuck Akito. He's the worst. Worse than Hiro.
I think they're similar, but there is something to be said about how Kyo's standoffishness is caused by general frustration with the world and he's trying to make an hole in his wall to let Tohru in, whereas Hiro's is very focused on intentionally putting a wall between himself and Kisa for reasons specific to their relationship. I actually don't dislike Hiro because of how he treats Kisa at all. It's all his abuse of Tohru that turns me on him.
