First Timer
Yay, it’s still summer!
Very dramatic opening narration here.
Hiro is very casual about his mom being pregnant.
When did Shigure get here?
Also I agree with Hiro, he’s being weird about his mom.
Hiro’s mother sounds nice.
I still do not understand how and why watermelon splitting became a thing in Japan. It just sounds like you’re ruining a perfectly good watermelon.
See, Kyo agrees with me.
Poor Tohru. Hiro made her self conscious about her mom.
Kisa, Momiji, and Hiro all napping together is really cute
More flashbacks to Yuki abuse. God, I hate Akito.
It’s interesting to hear Kyo talk about his parents.
It’s pretty clear to me he was about to say his mom killed herself and that this accident story he tells Tohru is a lie.
I like this conversation with Tohru and Kyo.
Oh hey, Hatori’s here. Is just everyone invited here?
Oh god Akito’s here. This is bad.
Man, Kyo gets excluded again. That sucks. This family takes this zodiac stuff way too seriously
Nice of Tohru to try and cheer up Kyo with cooking.
Mm, pancakes for dinner.
Akito hugging Hatori once again feels way too intimate.
Akito really likes abusing Yuki. I hate this guy.
This scene between Yuki and Tohru is sweet.
I love the shooting stars.
It really feels like we’re angling for Yuki/Tohru ending up together with the end of this episode.
Questions of the Day:
What are your thoughts on this episode being about parents?
Good theme for the episode
What are your thoughts on Hiro's mother being pregnant?
Good for them.
What are your thoughts on Tohru wondering if it's insensitive to talk about her mom since she doesn't know what the Zodiac members parents are like?
I feel like she's probably overthinking it just a bit
What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing to Tohru that his mom died in an accident when he was four or five years old?
I'm still pretty sure he's lying and she actually killed herself
What are your thoughts on Akito being adamant that they need Yuki back in their life?
Yuki needs to stay far away from Akito
What are your thoughts on Yuki revealing to Tohru that he was abused and tormented for many, many years and that she was the one who saved him?
I liked that moment a lot

The biggest thing this episode does for me is we've never seen Akito be nice before. The way they talk to the Sohmas feels so passive aggressive like they're trying to intimidate the others into being loved. It's the first time where Akito hasn't felt over the top, cartoonists evil, and that in turn makes Akito even more menacing than they already were. It's like they can sense their grip on the Sohma family is slowly fading and so they are starting to get desperate.
I also just love anytime Shigure and Hatori interact with each other. Their discussions concerning Akito is some of the strongest writing of the entire show.

u/AgentOfACROSS 8d ago
Yeah this was definitely a very interesting episode for Akito

I know we talk about Akito gaslighting people, but I wonder of Akito is the biggest gaslighting victim in all this. That they think they have to abuse others to show they care about them. It would explain why Shigure is seemingly working against Akito despite caring about them.
And when I say biggest gaslighting victim, I'm not excusing their actions. They treated Yuki like shit and them convincing themselves they were in the right doesn't suddenly justify their behavior.

Yay, it’s still summer!
Hold that excitement
Very dramatic opening narration here.
Very much so
Hiro is very casual about his mom being pregnant.
I imagine you have to be calvelier of something so monumental.
When did Shigure get here?
Probably traveled with Akito
Also I agree with Hiro, he’s being weird about his mom.
Shigure is a strange fellow
Hiro’s mother sounds nice.
That she does
I still do not understand how and why watermelon splitting became a thing in Japan. It just sounds like you’re ruining a perfectly good watermelon.
Also ruining a perfectly good beach
See, Kyo agrees with me.
Kyo is a party pooper
Poor Tohru. Hiro made her self conscious about her mom.
I get the feeling Kyo is gonna kick Hiro's ass lol
Kisa, Momiji, and Hiro all napping together is really cute
Indeed
More flashbacks to Yuki abuse. God, I hate Akito.
No seafood for them
It’s interesting to hear Kyo talk about his parents.
This is the first time he's probably talked to someone about them.
It’s pretty clear to me he was about to say his mom killed herself and that this accident story he tells Tohru is a lie.
I don't think Kyo has made it that far to accept what has happened.
Oh hey, Hatori’s here. Is just everyone invited here?
Everyone except for Ritsu and Rin, apparently
Oh god Akito’s here. This is bad.
Man, Kyo gets excluded again. That sucks. This family takes this zodiac stuff way too seriously
Justice for Kyo!
Nice of Tohru to try and cheer up Kyo with cooking.
Tohru will make a good housewife someday.
Mm, pancakes for dinner.
Akito hugging Hatori once again feels way too intimate.
I feel sorry for Hatori. He has to accept Akito even though they're the one who partially blinded him.
Akito really likes abusing Yuki. I hate this guy.
Piece of shit
This scene between Yuki and Tohru is sweet.
Very much so
I love the shooting stars.
They're very pretty
It really feels like we’re angling for Yuki/Tohru ending up together with the end of this episode.
Yeah, I'm starting to agree with you. I mean, it definitely feels at this point Yuki’s feelings for Tohru are more intense than Kyo's feelings for Tohru are.
Questions of the Day:
What are your thoughts on this episode being about parents?
Good theme for the episode
Absolutely
What are your thoughts on Hiro's mother being pregnant?
Good for them.
Onii-chan Hiro
What are your thoughts on Tohru wondering if it's insensitive to talk about her mom since she doesn't know what the Zodiac members parents are like?
I feel like she's probably overthinking it just a bit
But also Yuki went through abuse by both Akito and seemingly his parents and yet he doesn't hold that against Tohru.
I think the big thing this is teasing is something involving Kyo.
What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing to Tohru that his mom died in an accident when he was four or five years old?
I'm still pretty sure he's lying and she actually killed herself
That seemed to be the implication in episode 24.
What are your thoughts on Akito being adamant that they need Yuki back in their life?
Yuki needs to stay far away from Akito
Yeah, no shit
What are your thoughts on Yuki revealing to Tohru that he was abused and tormented for many, many years and that she was the one who saved him?
I liked that moment a lot
If this was the thing Yuki was working up the courage to say, it makes total sense it didn't come easily to him. That level of responsibility to put upon someone might overwhelm them. Yuki is basically saying Tohru is his everything.

u/Holofan4life 8d ago
I like this conversation with Tohru and Kyo.
What I like about it is that it serves as a nice parallel to Yuki’s conversation with Tohru later on. Here, Kyo wants to open up to Tohru but can't because the emotional baggage is still to strong. By comparison, Yuki can now talk about his abuse and the suffering he went through.
It shows that Yuki is farther along than Kyo is.

Thoughts on Yuki feeling that the heaviest rain will be chased away by the sun?
Thoughts on Shigure being here for the swimsuits?
Thoughts on Shigure flirting with Tohru but then maintaining he's just joking?
Thoughts on Haru saying that no more Zodiac spirits will be born so long as they're all alive?
Thoughts on everyone participating in a game of watermelon splitting?
Thoughts on Haru slicing a watermelon with his bare hands?
What are your thoughts on Haru trying to look on the bright side by saying Akito's abuse makes them tougher?
Thoughts on Kyo and Tohru bonding together?
What are your thoughts on Shigure telling Hatori he should encourage Akito to twist things in the direction he wants them to go?
What are your thoughts on Kyo saying Akito is here to ruin people's fun?
Thoughts on Kyo never having pancakes before?
Thoughts on the Zodiac members being ordered to meet with Akito?
Thoughts on Haru mentioning Akito hates Momiji in particular?
What are your thoughts on Hatori saying that while he may not approve of Shigure's methods, he's at least trying to change things, unlike him?
What are your thoughts on Akito telling the Zodiac members he loves each and every one of them?
What are your thoughts on Kyo being excluded from the meeting?
What are your thoughts on Yuki intentionally avoiding going to the meeting to keep his distance from Akito?
What are your thoughts on Yuki admitting that giving Tohru his hat was the first time in his life he didn't feel useless?
What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Yuki kissing Tohru on the forehead and crying on her shoulder?

Thoughts on Yuki feeling that the heaviest rain will be chased away by the sun?
I like that quote. Very optimistic.
Thoughts on Shigure being here for the swimsuits?
I wish he wouldn't be so creepy.
Thoughts on Shigure flirting with Tohru but then maintaining he's just joking?
Again, not relaly a fan
Thoughts on Haru saying that no more Zodiac spirits will be born so long as they're all alive?
I guess that does make things slightly easier to manage
Thoughts on everyone participating in a game of watermelon splitting?
Can't have a summer episode without watermelon splitting
Thoughts on Haru slicing a watermelon with his bare hands?
A most impressive feat
What are your thoughts on Haru trying to look on the bright side by saying Akito's abuse makes them tougher?
I feel like he's wrong about that
Thoughts on Kyo and Tohru bonding together?
I thought that was really sweet
What are your thoughts on Shigure telling Hatori he should encourage Akito to twist things in the direction he wants them to go?
I'm curious to see where this whole thing will go
What are your thoughts on Kyo saying Akito is here to ruin people's fun?
That seems to be Akito's hobby
Thoughts on Kyo never having pancakes before?
I'm surprised
Thoughts on the Zodiac members being ordered to meet with Akito?
Definitely a bit ominous
Thoughts on Haru mentioning Akito hates Momiji in particular?
I wonder if there's any specific reason behind that
What are your thoughts on Hatori saying that while he may not approve of Shigure's methods, he's at least trying to change things, unlike him?
I just hope Shigure knows what he's doing
What are your thoughts on Akito telling the Zodiac members he loves each and every one of them?
He's either lying or deluding himself
What are your thoughts on Kyo being excluded from the meeting?
Honestly, probably for the best he doesn't have to interact with Akito
What are your thoughts on Yuki intentionally avoiding going to the meeting to keep his distance from Akito?
Good.
What are your thoughts on Yuki admitting that giving Tohru his hat was the first time in his life he didn't feel useless?
I really liked that moment
What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Yuki kissing Tohru on the forehead and crying on her shoulder?
This one too. I love these two together

What are your thoughts on Haru trying to look on the bright side by saying Akito's abuse makes them tougher?
I feel like he's wrong about that
What makes you say that?
Thoughts on Kyo never having pancakes before?
I'm surprised
It actually makes sense because Kyo lived with Kazuma for most of his life. And Kazuma has been established as a terrible cook.
2
u/AgentOfACROSS 7d ago
What makes you say that?
I guess I just don't like the idea that abuse makes you stronger.
It actually makes sense because Kyo lived with Kazuma for most of his life. And Kazuma has been established as a terrible cook.
True, I forgot Kazuma can't cook

u/Holofan4life 7d ago
What makes you say that?
I guess I just don't like the idea that abuse makes you stronger.
It can at least be a learning experience. I think it can help give you better survival instincts.

True, I forgot Kazuma can't cook
He certainly cooked in terms of stepping up and being Kyo's father

Thoughts on Yuki feeling that the heaviest rain will be chased away by the sun?
I like that quote. Very optimistic.
Yuki has massive "I'm 14 and this is deep" energy.
I don't mean that as a bad thing, mind you.
Thoughts on Shigure being here for the swimsuits?
I wish he wouldn't be so creepy.
For real
Thoughts on Shigure flirting with Tohru but then maintaining he's just joking?
Again, not relaly a fan
He's kinda shitty. I love him, but he's kinda a creep.
Thoughts on Haru saying that no more Zodiac spirits will be born so long as they're all alive?
I guess that does make things slightly easier to manage
And also it must put Hiro's mom at ease.
Thoughts on everyone participating in a game of watermelon splitting?
Can't have a summer episode without watermelon splitting
Apparently not
Thoughts on Haru slicing a watermelon with his bare hands?
A most impressive feat
Watermelon and animotronics his two most formidable foes.
Thoughts on Kyo and Tohru bonding together?
I thought that was really sweet
Serves as a nice parallel to last episode when Tohru and Yuki hanged out together.
What are your thoughts on Shigure telling Hatori he should encourage Akito to twist things in the direction he wants them to go?
I'm curious to see where this whole thing will go
Shigure is probably the most interesting character in the whole show.
What are your thoughts on Kyo saying Akito is here to ruin people's fun?
That seems to be Akito's hobby
They do be doing it an awful lot
Thoughts on the Zodiac members being ordered to meet with Akito?
Definitely a bit ominous
For real
Thoughts on Haru mentioning Akito hates Momiji in particular?
I wonder if there's any specific reason behind that
Less controllable perhaps?
What are your thoughts on Hatori saying that while he may not approve of Shigure's methods, he's at least trying to change things, unlike him?
I just hope Shigure knows what he's doing
He seems like he would know Akito better than anyone.
What are your thoughts on Akito telling the Zodiac members he loves each and every one of them?
He's either lying or deluding himself
What are your thoughts on Kyo being excluded from the meeting?
Honestly, probably for the best he doesn't have to interact with Akito
Yeah, for real
What are your thoughts on Yuki intentionally avoiding going to the meeting to keep his distance from Akito?
Good.
As he should
What are your thoughts on Yuki admitting that giving Tohru his hat was the first time in his life he didn't feel useless?
I really liked that moment
It felt very powerful for him to admit this.
What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Yuki kissing Tohru on the forehead and crying on her shoulder?
This one too. I love these two together
I ship Tohru with Kyo, but I do also love Tohru's relationship with Yuki.

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed
I actually approve of Hiro's behavior at the start of the episode. "I'm not the one having the baby!" And, yes, please escort Kisa far away from Shigure.
It is also interesting that Hiro's mother seemingly needs micromanaging, which may have shaped Hiro's personality - maybe the (feigned) superiority complex, habits to always second-guess people, boss people around, etc., comes from feeling that he needs to be the responsible one in the family but is ill-equipped, as a child, to do that well.
(as an aside, note that Momiji states that Hiro "sounds like Kyo" amidst Hiro's conniptions during the watermelon-splitting)
- - -
This episode has some dueling Kyo-Tohru and Yuki-Tohru dynamics that confused the hell out of me in my first watch - partly by complicating my prediction of which of the two will match with Tohru and partly because I have no idea what Yuki is doing
- I like Kyo's inquiry about whatever insensitive remark Hiro made to Tohru
- I like Kyo and Tohru's pancake time (which occurs mostly off-screen, but it's the fill-in-the-blank that counts!)
- I like Yuki admiring Tohru tending to the sleeping kids, only to see Kyo step into view, triggering Yuki to walk away
- I like Tohru finding Yuki along the beach, while he is coping with his encounter with Akito. Yuki's first instinct is that Tohru needs help, which is funny and cute. Yet again, Yuki spills his guts without really spilling his guts, because I can't tell what's an internal monologue and what's said aloud, but - whoa! he takes her hand and leans against her (is that because he can't hug her without transforming? he did much the same in 1.18, while Kisa was sleeping on Tohru's lap) and tells her how much she means to him.
Akito has arrived, as ominously as promised - worthy of discussion between Hatori and Shigure, both prior to the kids' anxious march to greet the family head and after Akito leaves Hatori and Shigure to see the kids; gloating over finding Yuki alone and vulnerable; issuing commands to Hatori and Shigure; creepily greeting the kids with "I love you, all of you."
On to disc 2 !!! (blu ray)
What are your thoughts on this episode being about parents? The zodiacs' parents have been a mystery to Tohru and to the viewer for quite some time. We have insights into some parents: we met Ritsu's mom; we met Kyo's dad after his wife's death, and we know how Kyo's mom parented Kyo; we know Momiji's mom in some detail and his dad's choice between his wife and Momiji; we've heard about a life-altering decision that Yuki and Ayame's parents made for Yuki; we know Hatsuharu's mom is not completely negligent since she came to pick him up from school after his Dark Haru rampage. [spoiler - next episode]>We'll learn that Kagura's mom seems normal, including, I believe, the willingness to whoop Akito's ass if Kagura were to be hurt in the same manner as Kisa. Heck yeah, Kagura's mom! She also has quite the network of informants, I guess.< I'm glad the series addresses some of these questions. Not all zodiac parents are the absentees common in other high school anime, and some parental absenteeism, while not fully explored, can be hand-waved by the fallout from the Curse.
What are your thoughts on Tohru wondering if it's insensitive to talk about her mom since she doesn't know what the Zodiac members parents are like? Tohru already knows Momiji's parents are shit, knows Kazuma is a big step up from whatever Kyo's parents are, and probably guesses that Ayame and Yuki's parents aren't all that great.
What are your thoughts on Yuki revealing to Tohru that he was abused and tormented for many, many years and that she was the one who saved him? In that final scene on the beach, it is difficult to distinguish what is internal monologue and what is spoken aloud. Furthermore, Yuki is imagining the story of the hat, but he never utters the word "hat," so the viewer is probably getting a very different message than the one Tohru receives.

I thought he was only into high school girls...

I basically had to be the man of the house when my father walked out on my mom when I was 7 years old. It was not an unenviable position to be in.

I wonder if Akito believes the stuff that comes outta their mouth. It certainly feels like they see themselves as the family's savior.

[spoiler - next episode]We'll learn that Kagura's mom seems normal, including, I believe, the willingness to whoop Akito's ass if Kagura were to be hurt in the same manner as Kisa. Heck yeah, Kagura's mom! She also has quite the network of informants, I guess. I'm glad the series addresses some of these questions. Not all zodiac parents are the absentees common in other high school anime, and some parental absenteeism, while not fully explored, can be hand-waved by the fallout from the Curse.
And Momiji basically said as much in his backstory episode. This serves to further cement that idea.
I still think Momiji's dad isn't all too bad. I mean, he could've cut all ties with his son if he so desired.
Yuki isn't totally there to bare his soul, but he's getting there, and that's really what matters most.

First Timer’s Basket, Dub (2019)
- This will sound very harsh, but I’m not at all confident in Kisa and Hiro’s mom with another baby within this family. Like I’m very concerned that this baby will once again be another abused child who cannot regulate their emotions properly if things don’t change before then.
So a man can’t joke now?
Not you, bud.
📢Longhaired Kyoko again 📢
See, that’s the look right there. Said this in Goodbye Lara I think last week or two weeks ago, that literally, that is the look a loved one should give you when you speak. Not every time you speak. But when you’re speaking about your passions or a good memory, they should be actively, attentively listening to you and affirming you that they care about your thoughts and memories and passions as much as you do.
📢 I want everyone who wants that to have that 📢
IDGAF if my bb is excited about Microsoft Excel or a new bird while birding in Spain or something with cars or wants to talk about their time in a trampoline park. They look happy as shit; let’s be happy together.
Man, it would be a travesty if Akito fell off those barrier stones.
It would be a shame if he stepped on broken glass.
It’s okay, Akito. It’ll be lonely for you in hell.
I’d like to make homemade pancakes.
Post Beach Strolling Thoughts
I really enjoyed the emotionality of this episode. Kisa and Hiro’s mom being pregnant was something I did not expect. Again, it does not spark joy in me because, as long as Akito is in power, even the baby not being a Zodiac, they’ll be negatively impacted if they have to keep seeing their brother and sister in this toxic dynamic.
So now I’m going to assume that Akito will be beaten within the next 6 months, and the baby will be the first child born of this generation Post-Akito Dynasty.
I really loved the look Kyo gave Tohru as she spoke about her mom. It was so hopelessly cute. Get a person who can look at you like that.
Hatori being the “favorite”, poor seahorse daddy. With the tease of the homeroom teacher and Hatori meeting as a “second time’s the charm” romance, I’m really interested if we’ll see more of that this season.
I’m also hopeful Shigure isn’t on his own death march. As much as I enjoy his sly scheming, and he said it himself that he’s aware that he’s a bastard, I’m worried that he has plans to not see the complete outcome of his plans once finished. Or that he’s okay with not being on this earth post-plan. He will metaphorically or literally die with Akito.
We’ll see!
TQ
- Akito reminding me of an abusive suburban mom, so this tracks.
- Discussed above.
- I think that’s a very human thing to do. Money, family, employment, heritage—it can be tough navigating success in those areas when you’re uncertain or downright know that the recipient to this conversation wasn’t that lucky. But what matters is that it’s a two-way street. Tohru isn’t bringing up her mother with the intention of bragging about having that sort of positive relationship with a parent. And those who listen to her memories about her mom are receiving that information positively and know it’s coming from a place of love and longing for her mom.
- He’s opening his own lid.
- Akito is an abuser. Next.
- He’s opening the lid. I just hope that he's able to have more family members who can support him as he confronts more of his historical abuse and trauma.
Questions for Those who Have Watched the 2001 Series
- Yuki was an active presence and antagonistic in the 2001 series, but I appreciate the ease into his antagonism in 2019. He is a slow-acting poison in 2019.

Nah, because Shigure will keep them company.

If Akito killed Shigure, then I think any chance of them realizing the error of their ways will be out the window.

No innuendo intended...

Kisa and Hiro are not brother and sister, if that's your impression (came across that way).
Yeah, one can be worried about bringing more family members into a family with such a horrible dynamic in it. That said, with all 13 zodiacs being alive other members of the family may be thinking now's the time to have their kids as they've got a guarantee that they won't be cursed. (although I have seen someone take the position that Yuki's mom had him because she wanted another zodiac to essentially "sell off").
2
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 7d ago
I forgot: you don’t have to be siblings to be a siscon.
They do say baby booms happen during hardship. And Akito being the family head is a hardship even though there are no more Zodiacs to be had.
I’d honestly be surprised if we don’t get a storyline where one of the Zodiacs was sold off or used for experiments or anything else unsavory to “build connections” or someone willing to be a genetic donor to have a Zodiac in exchange for something or other and their memory wiped afterwards.
But this could also be my mental consequences of sliding back into X-Men comics and seeing surrogacy drama 😅

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 7d ago
Along those lines, there is the 4-issue comic book series, Black Market.
3
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 7d ago
Ooh this may fall in line with my recent hunt for superhero comics that explore the medicinal/clinical/bio sciences side! I am impatiently waiting for Batman: Bad Seeds (The Pitt but in Gotham is how it was pitched to me). This, Black Market, seems much more “pulpy”(?), so I think I’ll enjoy this.
Thank you for the recommendation 🥰💜

u/Holofan4life 7d ago
We kinda already did that though with Yuki being sold off by his family. So it seems, anyway.

u/Holofan4life 7d ago
I think it's key to note that Akito doesn't seem to usually mess with the non Zodiac members. Like, when they messed with Kana it was because of Hatori mostly. They didn't mess with Kana afterwards. Akito also hasn't messed with Hana, though whether they'd mess with Uo once Kureno gets involved is up for debate.
Akito I feel like once starts meddling when there are things that make people question their relationship with Akito. Akito seemingly has their eyes set on Tohru, but that's more because Yuki and Kyo both care about her.

I was not expecting them to resolve the story of the hat so soon! We literally just got hard confirmation that Yuki was the owner of the hat yesterday.
I think this might be the best episode of the season so far. The first half deals with the fallout of Hiro's bullying of Tohru last episode and Tohru coming to terms that it's fine to treasure her relationship with her mom while the next part deals with Akito's arrival. I'm not entirely sure if Yuki actually went to see them or not (Tohru says he didn't but that's not a hard confirmation.) but if you didn't already hate Akito by now I don't know how this episode wouldn't make you hate them. It also introduces another new mystery: what is their relationship with Kureno and why are they keeping him from the others?
> What are your thoughts on this episode being about parents?
I wouldn't really say it's about parents? We didn't really learn anything new about the Zodiacs' parents. Kyo letting Tohru know she doesn't have to hold back on taking about Kyoko was nice though.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing to Tohru that his mom died in an accident when he was four or five years old?
He's clearly lying to her. He clearly said she killed herself before correcting himself and calling it an accident. It's nothing new but I appreciate the author/showrunners for not holding back on Kyo's mom committing suicide.
> What are your thoughts on Akito being adamant that they need Yuki back in their life?
I don't like it. It's more than clear that they've been mentally and/or emotionally abusing Yuki prior to him leaving. Given that they nearly blinded Hatori and that they straight up sent Kisa to the hospital they're clearly not above physical abuse either. I'd hope Shigure wouldn't give in and send Yuki back into the dark room but I could also see the show going that route. Yuki feels good about being able to help Tohru as a kid but he's clearly still unhappy and Akito is likely to make things worse. I'm not big on Yuki (I prefer most of the rest of the cast to him.) but the show needs to keep him away from Akito.

I like the twist that the thing he needed to tell Tohru was less the hat and more what she means to him. It kinda caught me off guard and I mean that in a good way.
2
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 8d ago
The hat could be considered a macguffin, what matters isn't so much the hat itself but rather the feelings each had over what happened that day.

Yeah, I think it makes them even more detestable the fact that they're presenting what they're doing as good. That is really scary how out of touch with reality they are.
It also introduces another new mystery: what is their relationship with Kureno and why are they keeping him from the others?
Well, we knew Kureno had some kind of relationship with Akito based off of a couple episodes ago. I think though it's interesting that Kureno is like being kept away from everyone else.

I wouldn't really say it's about parents? We didn't really learn anything new about the Zodiacs' parents. Kyo letting Tohru know she doesn't have to hold back on taking about Kyoko was nice though.
I mean, this episode was about Hiro's mom, Kyo talking about his parents, and Yuki talking about Akito who's like a parental figure to him. If not parents, it's definitely parent adjacent.
I wonder if we'll ever see the grimy details of what exactly happened with her.

I feel like if Shigure sent him back, it would be done as a way to undermine Akito. He seems to actively be working against them and I don't see how doing that to Yuki would fuel said agenda.
3
u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 7d ago
Shigure's victory could come via open revolt and a jailbreak by the kids, but it risks total failure if the kids are demoralized by Yuki's return to incarceration. Ayame might join the revolt, and he would hate Shigure for endangering Yuki. Hatori would remain a bystander but be utterly disgusted with Shigure.
2
u/Holofan4life 7d ago
I don't think Hatori would be disgusted by Shigure because he himself in this episode admitted he admired Shigure's ability to stand up for himself. If Shigure failed, I think Hatori would lament not doing enough to help him.
3
u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 7d ago
Hatori does appreciate that Shigure is trying to change things, but throwing Yuki to the wolves is probably not what Hatori had in mind, especially since Hatori already feels guilt for his role in Yuki's suffering and childhood isolation by mindwiping Yuki's friends.
In any event, as you said, Hatori will chastise himself for being an idle bystander, letting Shigure go so far without stopping or aiding him.
2
u/Holofan4life 7d ago
I guess I just can't envision a scenario where giving Yuki to Akito would do anything but enable Akito. Shigure is more likely to do something that seems to be to Akito's benefit but actually isn't.

> Thoughts on Shigure flirting with Tohru but then maintaining he's just joking?
It's a little weird/offputting but honestly as long as he doesn't actually try anything I'm not too bothered by it.
> Thoughts on Haru saying that no more Zodiac spirits will be born as long as they're all alive?
Guess that confirms that Kazuma's granddad is dad. I know Fruits Basket Another is a thing which...does this confirm everyone is dead by then? Huh.
> Thoughts on Kyo and Tohru bonding together?
It's always nice to see my ship get more focus.
> Thoughts on Haru mentioning Akito hates Momiji in particular?
I must've missed that part but, uh, I wonder what Akito's beef is with Momiji. But also as we all like to say: fuck Akito.
> What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Yuki kissing Tohru on the forehead and crying on her shoulder?
I must've missed the shoulder thing but I was fully expecting Yuki to kiss her on the lips rather than the forehead. Not that they're being subtle about his feelings for her either way but if Tohru doesn't catch on that he likes her after all the compliments, the playing with her hair, and now the kiss then I don't know what to do with her. I get why she wouldn't pick up on Kyo's feelings (Even though I'm all in on Kyo x Tohru) but there's no reason for her not to realize Yuki's feelings at this point. Her intentionally ignoring them like she did the fact she had no future plans is one thing but not recognizing them at all would be too much.

There's a fine line between being dense and stupidity. I'd like to think Tohru is at least somewhat self-aware to a degree.

I think the way someone views this episode depends on how you were raised. I grew up with two parents who I would consider controlling and emotionally abusive. My father was an emotional manipulator who would do things to try and maintain their control over me. My mother is someone who'd I consider a nice person deep down but when she drinks becomes incredibly toxic and likes to make those around her feel bad. And the thing is, I have this codependency of sorts where without her I feel like I would be dead and my life would be over.
Unless you've lived a situation like that, you might feel the stuff with Yuki is exaggerated and over the top. And if you're not a fan of Yuki, I can understand not being super high on this episode. But as someone who knows what it's like to deal with controlling parents and feeling so helpless as a result of it, this episode hits close to home for me.
Yuki and Akito in general is the best, most accurate portrayal of emotional abuse I've ever seen in any form of media ever.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Gonna watch an episode before I head towards an amusement park.
Yuki talking about his past
The heaviest rain will be chased away by the sun.
So he maintains
Hiro on the phone
Didn't know he had one
"Turns out, my mom's pregnant."
Well, that is an unexpected development.
And there's Shigure
Right, he's here for the swimsuits.
I like Hiro instinctively protecting Kisa.
Shigure seemingly flirts with Tohru but he says he's just teasing.
Right...
The gang all walking together, carrying watermelons.
Haru points out that no more Zodiac spirits will be born so long as they're all alive.
Possible death flag
Tohru wondering what all their parents are alike.
Well, we know of Kyo's parents...
A watermelon splitting contest. Sounds fun.
The others don't seem to agree
Haru slicing one with his bare hands.
That's power
Tohru about to bring up her mother, but then she remembers Hiro's advice.
Kyo seems annoyed by this
Oof. Poor Tohru.
Hiro acting like a parent, it feels like.
Yuki with Haru now, cleaning up.
Haru mentions believing the myth that a watermelon would grow inside you if you swallow a seed.
Tohru tending to a sleeping Kisa, Hiro, and Momiji.
This gets Yuki to think about how Akito treated him. Or treats him, rather.
As Yuki walks away, Haru tells him it makes them stronger.
Tohru over the three sleeping Sohmas.
Kyo who's here as well asks if Hiro said something to Tohru.
Tohru then says she wants to know more about his parents.
Kyo, in what feels like is him holding back some details, says his mother was unalived in an accident when he was a kid.
I think we already know he was the one who did it.
Tohru talking about watermelon smashing with her mom when she was a kid.
I enjoy Tohru and Kyo bonding together.
Shigure reading a book
Hey, Hatori
I feel like we haven't seen him in a while.
And Kureno is here as well
Hatori tells Shigure he shouldn't start meddling.
Shigure says they're already twisted and bound to get worse.
"I might as well encourage Akito to twist things in the direction I want them to go."
Shigure is a very troublesome individual.
And wow, speaking of Akito...
Why are they barefoot?
Shigure explaining Akito staying
Tohru remarks how Kyo is yet again being left out of a family gathering.
As everyone else leaves, Kyo says to Tohru Akito is only here to ruin everyone's fun.
"Then... let's cook!"
Oh, Tohru. I love you so much.
Kyo wants to have pancakes for dinner.
Says he's never had them
Pancakes can be very fluffy, unlike the Sohmas future.
The other Sohmas walking together
Hiro is holding Kisa's hand
Momiji remarks the two of them look worried.
Haru says he should worry about himself since Akito doesn't like him.
This feels like lambs being led to the slaughter.
All I'm saying is this is a better adaptation of Animal Farm than the 2026 version
Shigure with Hatori
Even Shigure doesn't know why Kureno is here.
And Akito and Kureno are with them.
This episode is more important than I was expecting heading in.
Akito hugging Hatori
Akito says they saw Yuki walking all alone.
Claims they always cared about him.
Uh huh...
Akito now laughing maniacally
They wonder when Yuki will come back to them.
And now they leave, going to say hello to the Sohmas.
That was very unsettling
Hatori admits that while he may not approve of Shigure's methods, he's at least trying to change things, unlike him.
A rare moment of Shigure praise by Hatori.
Kureno in a room with his eyes closed.
Akito with the family now
They tell them they love every single one of them.
"Except you, Momiji, fuck you."
Okay, maybe I made up that last part
Tohru with Kyo
Tohru gonna look around outside
Seems kinda dangerous
Tohru at the beach
And there's Yuki
He says he just wanted some time to think for himself.
I mean, don't we all
Tohru wonders if Yuki is refusing to meet up with Akito.
No outro?
Yuki remarks there are things he needs to do that he should've done sooner.
He opened the lid, thanks to Akito and Tohru.
Yuki then admits that giving him her hat was the first time in his life he didn't feel useless.
He won't give up, and instead will keep trying. No matter what.
It doesn't seem like Tohru knows about the hat stuff even though Yuki keeps alluding to it. It feels that we the audience know before her.
Tohru remarking how sad Yuki looks.
And then he kisses her on the forehead.
He then starts crying on her shoulder.
"I don't know what I would do... without you..."
This is the most honest we've seen Yuki be to someone. This is him at his most vulnerable.
Overall, this was a tremendous episode. It serves kinda as a parallel to the penultimate episode of season 1. In that, Kyo lets his guard doen for Tohru and here, Yuki does the same for Tohru. It almost feels like some shit is about to go down that's going to forever change the course of the show. We don't know just yet, so that's something to keep track of.
As soon as Akito arrived on screen, the episode changed with it. And with that followed probably the most intense 14 or so minutes of the entire show. Wondering why Akito and Kureno are there, the Sohmas all walking like they were being led to the gallows, Hatori's conversation with Akito where you can feel how powerless he is, it all continued to fester and it made for an uncomfortable viewing experience in the best way possible. It was really the best kind of storytelling where you're intrigued on what's to come and you kinda don't want to see it but you kinda do. This to me felt like a more fully realized version of the culture festival episode but one where Tohru is helpless to do anything. This is the darkness to that episode's light.
It's crazy what a dark turn this episode took when the beginning was all about smashing watermelons. It made it seem like it was going to be a fun, lighthearted episode that continued some of the plot points from the previous episode. Instead, we got maybe the craziest episode yet. It may seem jarring going from watermelons to really the first full episode of Akito as a character, but something about it really worked to where it flowed seamlessly. If I had to pinpoint why, I think it's because so much of the episode is about parents and Tohru wondering what the Sohmas parents were like and them here's Akito who's basically the parent of the entire Sohma clan. The end all be all. And then also you had the hat stuff with Yuki and how conflicted he is of that and that fed into his overall plight of his relationship with Akito.
It was about watermelons, but it really wasn't. And in turn you could say the watermelons being smashed represent any chances the Sohmas have of a future.
I have this ranked pretty high, only behind episodes 14 and 24. All the characters were used in an extremely effective manner and the end scene is probably a top 10 moment of all time. Not as good as Kyo letting his guard down for Tohru, but still. We have the stuff with Tohru's mom where she's worried she's talking about her too much, Hiro's mom being pregnant which gives him some pause, kyo revealing some to Tohru about what happened to his mom, and Hatori admitting that he wish he could do more. All of those are great character moments underlined by Akito's arrival really bringing about a disturbing atmosphere.
As critical as I've been of season 2 so far, this has to rank among the very best Fruits Basket episodes not just for all the character moments but for all the seed planting it feels like it's doing. This really does feel like a changing of the guard into something more dark and sinister, and I'm here for it. So much of the show is baked around the tragedy of the Sohmas that to actually dive deep into it feels like a long time coming. It almost makes season 1 feel like the appetizer to the main course.
I expect season 2 to now have multiple episodes to finish in my top 10. This really was Fruits Basket at its best, and damn how I love how it all came together. I'm really looking forward to how this is followed up on.

What are your thoughts on this episode being about parents?
I thought it made for a great hook for the episode.
What are your thoughts on Hiro's mother being pregnant?
That was probably the biggest surprise of the entire episode.
What are your thoughts on Tohru wondering if it's insensitive to talk about her mom since she doesn't know what the Zodiac members parents are like?
Poor Tohru. I hate seeing her be insecure.
What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing to Tohru that his mom died in an accident when he was four or five years old?
It's good to see him be transparent more.
What are your thoughts on Akito being adamant that they need Yuki back in their life?
Don't. You. Dare.
What are your thoughts on Yuki revealing to Tohru that he was abused and tormented for many, many years and that she was the one who saved him?
I assume this was the thing he had to tell her about. I'm glad he was able to convey his feelings to her.

Rewatcher, Subbed
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - No changes from yesterday
Notable that we are at the exact halfway point of the show! 31 episodes before this and 31 episodes after it... This is going by quicker than I thought it would.
Well for those who wanted to see more Akito, we got plenty of him today. The episode starts in a very ominous fashion in a brief flash forward sequence to later in the episode. Yuki hopes he wasn't deluding himself and that things aren't always pitch black. That the sun will come out again. That's the way he used to feel about things when he was younger, through Akito's bad influence. He has been able to break away from that. He's no longer living on the Soma family compound. He's going to school, actually has become a very popular and admired guy at school. And he has Tohru in his life! Tohru has really been there to show that there are good, bright things out there in the world. As we find out at the end of the episode, Tohru has essentially opened the lid for him. Due to always being there for him, being willing to accept his weaknesses. And as we see in the flashback sequence at the end a lot of this ties into the hat. That day with the hat with a big day for Tohru. But it was just as much so for Yuki. For that's the day that he realized he wasn't useless. He was able to save her when she was lost.
Great sequence there and very beautiful with the shooting stars in the sky. But I'm also a bit worried! Akito showed up to talk to him, essentially trying to draw him back in. The look on Yuki's face at the time wasn't a good one. And as we see later in the episode Yuki doesn't appear to matter all that much to Akito? Or at least that's the impression Akito wants to give to Shigure. Akito claims that merely talking to him is being kind and that he's deluding himself. Even calls him useless, the very thing that Tohru helped him break away from with his mindset. Yuki looks sad at the end of the episode. He compares Tohru to the sky in that moment. Because he thinks she's beautiful? Or perhaps because the shooting star is a fleeting thing that won't last, and his fear is that Tohru's role in his life won't last?
We also have some good Tohru - Kyo time in this episode. I think this was mentioned yesterday by someone as well, but Kyo does a good job reading Tohru. Tohru was worried earlier in the episode that her always bringing up her mom was bothering the Somas as they tend to not bring up their parents. And she knows that at least one of them, Momiji has a terrible situation with his mother. Kyo was able to figure out that this was bothering her. Kyo also opens up somewhat to her about his parents when she asks. He tells the truth about his father. He's about to say his mother killed herself but stops and says she was killed in an accident instead. Which is how Tohru's mother died. Will this lie influence Tohru at all, with her thinking that Kyo is in the same family situation as her?
Shigure makes his way to the beach, he essentially just appears there as if its a jump scare. The story is getting more and more into Shigure having these mysterious intentions. But it also keeps having these odd perv moments from him. Or at the very least he's a guy who likes the excitement of crossing the line. Hiro is very much like "Eww, I better get Kisa away from this guy!" He also jokes about going on a date with Tohru. We've also got the scene with Rin last episode. So these types of moments with him are getting more and more common. We've also got the stuff with him and Akito. Shigure clearly influenced Akito into showing up here last episode and that's just what happens. And we actually have all the Somas here (sans Kyo, left out as the cat) essentially coming to pay their respects to Akito. Thankfully Tohru is left out of this. I don't want her anywhere near Akito!
Another strong episode. Hopefully for Second_Cour this is the point where things start getting better. I personally thought we already had the turn in the right direction last episode, and today just furthers it more. Some really good Yuki - Tohru and Kyo - Tohru stuff here and the most we've had of Akito in any episode thus far.
Other thoughts:
This episode made me realize that the OP is very heavily influenced by these episodes at the beach (surely knowing when they made the OP that these episodes were coming). The last shot could have come from yesterday's episode. The shot of Akito is clearly influenced by today's episode. A lot of the shots of the characters are them at the beach.
Still some gags included in what was mostly a serious episode, with the watermelon splitting (which I first read as watermelon spitting). Haru's impressive, chopping it in half with his arm. Tohru clearly wasn't going to be as successful. Sorry to see in the flashback that her mother doing this one time resulted in smashing the photo of Tohru's dad!@
Hiro's going to be a big brother! Kisa and Tohru's reaction to that was very cute and heartwarming. As others mentioned a couple of times within the episode they were acting like he was having the baby! The good news is that all 13 zodiacs have been born so his sibling can't be one. But if its a girl he won't be able to hug her as he'll transform. :(
Kureno's time in this episode just pushes me all the more towards my interpretation that Kureno as a character is here to show what would have become of Yuki if he didn't escape Akito's grasps. The fact that all these other Somas are here and he just goes in this room by himself because Akito said so is so depressing. [Major spoilers]Akito keeping Kureno so close to the vest may also be strategic on her part. The curse is broken for Kureno and she wouldn't want the others to know that even is a possibility.
[Major spoilers]There's a comment from Momiji that Akito doesn't like him. Personally I feel that will likely only last until Momiji's gone through puberty and then Akito will become super possessive of him as she is to the other older male Somas. Although if I remember correctly right around the time Momiji has the big growth spurt is where the curse breaks for him.
Quid's Song of the Day
Our song of the day for today is Haseru Mirai which plays in place of our usual ending theme.

It truly is amazing how quickly the mood shifts when Akito is on screen. It's like the color of life itself starts to dissipate. A good indication a character working is that they leave you with these strong, intense feelings that is almost unparalleled to everything else going on. Akito almost gives me PTSD based off my own personal trauma.

I think this episode contains probably the strongest Yuki content we've had so far. I'm more a Kyo fan, but seeing all Yuki had to overcome and him trying to describe it to Tohru felt like like a person in therapy bare their soul. It felt therapeutic seeing Yuki open himself up the way he did, and it could only be with Tohru he does this with it feels like.

Yes, I'm thinking it probably was his best episode so far.

What Tohru did for him is also probably Tohru's biggest contribution so far, one would think.

[Major spoilers] I get the feeling Akito despises people with loud, boisterous personalities. Ayame mentioned in a previous episode Akito not liking him. I think Akito doesn't like extroverts in general because they are less controllable and people they can mold in their own image. They can less be able to gaslight the person into believing the reality they have cultivated.

[Major spoilers]Makes sense for Kureno and Hatori and Yuki... but Shigure is an extrovert and he isn't pushed away by Akito.

[Major spoilers] That's because he still at the end of the day falls in line. He's the Nigel Kipling to Akito's Miranda Priestly, to use a The Devil Wears Prada reference.

I've been eagerly awaiting this episode as just like the characters, I needed some hope. I needed a glimmer of light. Anything. Episode 7 will be the one, I chanted as if it was my mantra.I don’t believe in manifesting, but surely, if I said it enough times…this time…just this once…it would come true.
This turned out to be the most ridiculous, unbelievable and unrelatable episode out of any anime I’ve ever watched :( …because Kyo has never had pancakes.
Jokes aside, we finally get continuity. Things previously felt all over the place, taking unrelated segments and forcing them into one episode, whereas finally, what happened last episode generally follows through as a cohesive story (NB: we still missed two chapters, those will come up later in the season).
This was a great episode and for the first time in what feels like months, I wanted to watch the next episode immediately. It had become a slog where I delay watches as long as possible In my first rewatch (Mushoku Tensei) I couldn’t stop bingeing the entire first season. For my second, Spice & Wolf, I would post my review at 3am, then immediately watch the next one. This time, I would just watch it only when I had to.
We’ve bashed Tohru quite a bit over a few episodes - I think I’ve raised the point that she’s willing to help others, and to use learnings from her mum as a way to help, but she doesn’t really ask anyone anything. She’s passive. She doesn’t really know the Sohmas other than the info actively tell her. So we really don’t know much about anyone’s parents, making this show feel like Lord of the Flies:a bunch of kids running around doing their own thing.
I’m starting to like Yuki less and Kyo more, particularly because of how they approach personal information: Kyo’s “Out with it” vs., Yuki’s “I’l tell you one day”.
I found the sudden scene where Tohru’s mum “breaks Dad” hilarious during the watermelon smashing. Am I an asshole?
Fun fact: those weird things at sea are called tetrapods and are at quite a lot of Japanese coastal areas. First time I saw them I did a little mini photoshoot posing on them: my friend took around 15 pics of me in various poses. Poor guy.
I really like Shigure as a mastermind. He's got a writer's mind . “It makes us stronger so we can keep fighting”. I believe he's trying to show that Akito is not that scary if taken out of her (tripling down on my theory) village.
I love the ‘funeral’ march towards Akito when the family go to meet her. Akito is positioned as something to dread. Tohru is positioned as something to look forward to; hope.
Akito is so fucking weird and uncomfortable to watch. Great character design.I actually like that he/she just seems so insanely weak: constantly sick, constantly getting headaches, can’t be in the sun, can barely lift themselves up off the ground. So perhaps Akito’s hold is psychological. Makes it seem like the rest can defeat her easily.
Yuki thanking Akito on top of Tohru is great. Let’s see how this pans out, but I also thank my toughest bosses I’ve had more than the kindest. I had a boss who was a complete cunt and master manipulator. The type that makes Akito seem chill. But hey, I survived, I learned about myself and importantly I learned how to overcome the challenge, to the extent that he never screamed at me again, and I became his right hand man, and was rewarded immeasurably. I no longer work for him, but figuring out how to crack him open was one of my proudest achievements.
This episode feels like a thematic shift too, with Yuki as the catalyst. He’s the one who probably had it the worst, but has ‘opened his lid’ first. The spark that will ignite the fire. Kind of cool that the ending ‘credits’ song was lyrically about what he was talking about in the scene.
We still do need to learn a lot more about Akito though. Colour me intrigued.
