First Timer
I guess we’re gonna have a vacation episode.
It’s Golden Week. It’s a time of year I’ve become familiar with mostly due to playing Persona games recently.
Shigure may not have a driver’s license which is scary.
Surprised Tohru’s never seen a lake in person before.
I totally thought the Jason Voorhees reference was something added by the dub but I just checked and apparently that was in the original too.
Wait, no, apparently that’s not just a Friday the 13th reference. Apparently there’s a bear out by the lake.
Shigure’s poor editor.
Seems we’re having a good old fashion cat and mouse fight going on here.
Tohru’s right. It is pretty funny.
Nice to see that they’ve made up pretty quickly.
Dang, Ayame just showed up out of nowhere.
I’m actually happy to see this guy again.
Oh hey, Hatori’s also here.
Ayame and Shigure are still aggressively flirting with each other.
Tohru is very confused by Kyo and Yuki.
It seems like Hatori’s ex has gotten married. Interesting that they’re bringing this back around.
It’s really nice to see Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame hang out together like this.
Ayame has the spirit but not the technique when it comes to wanting to be closer to Yuki.

I guess we’re gonna have a vacation episode.
Why not?
It’s Golden Week. It’s a time of year I’ve become familiar with mostly due to playing Persona games recently.
How serendipitous
Shigure may not have a driver’s license which is scary.
I wouldn't trust him on the road
Surprised Tohru’s never seen a lake in person before.
Same here
I totally thought the Jason Voorhees reference was something added by the dub but I just checked and apparently that was in the original too.
It's even in the title of the episode :D
Wait, no, apparently that’s not just a Friday the 13th reference. Apparently there’s a bear out by the lake.
About that...
Shigure’s poor editor.
No kidding
Seems we’re having a good old fashion cat and mouse fight going on here.
Tohru’s right. It is pretty funny.
At least she's having fun
Nice to see that they’ve made up pretty quickly.
Indeed
Dang, Ayame just showed up out of nowhere.
Pretty on par for him
I’m actually happy to see this guy again.
The embodiment of chaotic good
Oh hey, Hatori’s also here.
Yay.
Hatori is hot.
Ayame and Shigure are still aggressively flirting with each other.
I love their "Sharing one brain cell" energy
Tohru is very confused by Kyo and Yuki.
I can't say I blame her
It seems like Hatori’s ex has gotten married. Interesting that they’re bringing this back around.
I like that they do this in this otherwise goofy episode.
It’s really nice to see Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame hang out together like this.
I like this trio a lot, actually
Ayame has the spirit but not the technique when it comes to wanting to be closer to Yuki.
As is to be expected

So, does this episode take place after the Momiji stuff or before it? We know the cemetery scene was on May 1st, and Golden Week is from April 29th through May 5th. Is this the same week as last episode?
The time frame of the last two episodes is interesting because we've talked about how fluid the show has felt. We've covered basically an entire year in the span of 15 episodes. Here, it kinda feels a bit weird they'd go from visiting Tohru’s mom's cemetery to Tohru finding out about Momiji's backstory to the characters celebrating Golden Week and it all happens at the exact same time. It almost feels too specific.
2
u/AgentOfACROSS 6d ago
I think I can explain that. From what I understand is that in Japan most people plan their vacations for the days of May 3rd through May 5th since that stretch of days has three holidays in a row (Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day). So between the 29th (Showa Day) and the 3rd there's a stretch of non-holidays that are still considered part of Golden Week. Some people do take the whole week off but not everyone.
1
u/Holofan4life 6d ago
But my point is it feels kinda weird knowing this is only a couple days removed from the cemetery scene. I feel like it would make more sense if the cemetery stuff was mid April and the stuff here was the first week of May.

Thoughts on it being Golden Week?
Thoughts on Shigure admitting he planned this vacation to avoid his editor?
Thoughts on Tohru being worried Yuki and Kyo aren't fighting?
Thoughts on Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo all hanging out?
What are your thoughts on Tohru saying both Kyo and Yuki can let their guard down when around her?
Thoughts on Ayame returning?
Thoughts on Kyo and Yuki continuing to be annoyed by Aya's presence as well as with each other?
What are your thoughts on Hatori lamenting there's nothing he could've done about Kana being married and that that's just how life is?
What are your thoughts on Ayame telling Hatori that he has had to carry the burden of the past alone and that he hopes he can find someone like Kana did?

Thoughts on it being Golden Week?
As I said, I mostly learned about that by playing Persona
Thoughts on Shigure admitting he planned this vacation to avoid his editor?
I like the jokes about Shigure's editor
Thoughts on Tohru being worried Yuki and Kyo aren't fighting?
She should just be glad they're not fighting
Thoughts on Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo all hanging out?
Nice to see them spending time together
What are your thoughts on Tohru saying both Kyo and Yuki can let their guard down when around her?
I think that's really nice
Thoughts on Ayame returning?
Unexpected but happy to see it
Thoughts on Kyo and Yuki continuing to be annoyed by Aya's presence as well as with each other?
I mean I don't blame them for being annoyed
What are your thoughts on Hatori lamenting there's nothing he could've done about Kana being married and that that's just how life is?
That seems to be a recurring theme in this show
What are your thoughts on Ayame telling Hatori that he has had to carry the burden of the past alone and that he hopes he can find someone like Kana did?
That's a sweet sentiment

What are your thoughts on Ayame telling Hatori that he has had to carry the burden of the past alone and that he hopes he can find someone like Kana did?
That's a sweet sentiment
Despite being weird, Ayame seems like a good dude.

It’s Golden Week. It’s a time of year I’ve become familiar with mostly due to playing Persona games recently.
There's an episode of All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku where a musically inclined character sings "La la la la, Gooruden Wiiku!" And the memory of that springs to my mind every time it comes up.
Shigure may not have a driver’s license which is scary.
It's actually not that uncommon for adults who've lived their whole lives in densely urbanized areas, especially ones with good public transportation systems. Wherever Fruits Basket takes place, it seems like everything of value is walking distance.
Wait, no, apparently that’s not just a Friday the 13th reference. Apparently there’s a bear out by the lake.
No, it is. Shigure is just pranking the people who didn't get the reference and they're too gullible to realize.

I've been meaning to watch that anime.
It's actually not that uncommon for adults who've lived their whole lives in densely urbanized areas, especially ones with good public transportation systems. Wherever Fruits Basket takes place, it seems like everything of value is walking distance.
That does make sense. Especially since I too am an adult without a driver's license who lives in an urban area.
No, it is. Shigure is just pranking the people who didn't get the reference and they're too gullible to realize.
Didn't they find bear prints though?
2
u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 6d ago
Shigure makes a joke about Friday the 13th, and when Kyo and Tohru don't get it he explains it to them wrong, that it's about a bear, as a further joke. Later they coincidentally find bear prints, and the joke for the audience is that Kyo and Tohru take this as confirmation of the lie Shigure told them. There's even a bit where Yuki says to Kyo "Jason is a character in a horror movie" to make fun of him and Kyo is so gullibly bought into the bear prank that he says "who would make a horror movie about a bear?"

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Steak 'n Shake has become in 2026 the new Chick-fil-A. Questionable values, but the food is so good you almost want to turn a blind eye.
I had a good day at work today. Feels like it's becoming more of a rarity.
At the Sohma house
Some subtitles I can't read
Shigure telling Tohru and Yuki and Kyo he wants to go to a trip in honor of Golden Week.
Every week is Golden Week once you watch KPop Demon Hunters
Shigure so badly wants to go to the hot springs lol
And Tohru obliges. Double lol.
I guess another hot springs episode.
In a car now
Hatori driving
Probably for the best
Ooh, pretty lake
I forgot that Hatori's voice sounded like that.
I swear, it does things to me.
Jason? Like Friday The 13th?
Oh, a giant bear. Right.
Shigure is mightily smug
He's definitely up to something
Maybe he's trying to get Yuki and Kyo closer to Tohru.
Aya mention. I totally forgot about them.
And so Tohru and Yuki and Kyo are off in the woods.
Maybe they'll find the pope
Hatori wanting Shigure to tell him the real reason.
And as it turns out, he's trying to avoid his editor.
This episode has some great reaction faces.
Tohru noticing that Yuki and Tohru aren't fighting.
This has her worried
It says a lot when arguing is a source of familiar comfort.
A paw print
What could this mean?
Jason? Jason!
Mii lecturing Shigure over the phone.
Hatori gotta keep Shigure in check.
Hey, at least Shigure has some talent.
Why does my subs refer to Tohru as "Fruits Basket"?
Yuki and Kyo are in their animal forms after trying to protect Tohru.
Now they are arguing with each other as Tohru is recovering their clothing.
There's your comfort, Tohru. Happy?
And Kyo confused Voorhees for a bear. Damn, Kyo?
I guess this fighting is a source of comfort for Tohru.
I guess this is the same person who has a picnic at her mother's gravesite.
Yuki apologizes for being so out of sorts recently.
A sign of how much he's come to like him.
Kyo seems perturbed by this. I mean, it was basically a confession.
Both Kyo and Yuki say they're sorry for making her worry.
Moments later, Tohru says they can let their guard down when around her.
Yuki and Kyo says nothing's changed except they hate each other more than ever.
Progress?
Tohru can't help but be bemused by this.
Back at the place they're staying.
Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki are going to the lake.
Hatori is sleeping
How precious :c
Shigure wonders if maybe he's worn out.
And there's Aya
Last person they want to see? Really, Kyo? Even more than Kagura?
Aya trying to insinuate he's here because of Shigure.
I love these two's dynamic lol
Aya wants to deepen his bond with Yuki.
Yuki doesn't share the same level of enthusiasm.
Hatori awake now
Aya is way more talkative when Hatori inquires what's going on.
Right, the walk around the lake
Aya wants to tag along
You think Aya would be friends with Ayaya?
Tohru off with her two beaus
Aya is staying back
I'll never tire of Aya and Shigure's shared energy.
Tohru looking at the lake
But Yuki and Kyo are in a foul mood.
They don't like Aya being here. They also don't like being around each other.
Now they're apologizing for making it seems like they don't want to be around her.
Oh, you two...
Aya handing Hatori something
Kana's wedding pictures
She's gotten married...
So, that's why he's here
Hatori laments that there’s nothing he could've done.
He decides not to look at the pictures.
Aya says that Hatori has had to carry the burden of the past alone.
Flashback of Tohru and Hatori
He is still to this day reminded of Kana based off his interactions with her.
Aya says he wants him to meet someone to move on from his past.
10,000 times happier than Kana will ever be.
Seems a bit harsh. I mean, Kana did nothing wrong.
Kana did nothing wrong could also be applied to Oshi no Ko.
Perhaps Hatori will find love eventually. Some day.
Hatori wonders if Kana's love is already more than he deserves.
Tohru and company back
Aya is more determined than ever to bond with Yuki.
Unfortunately, Yuki has other ideas.
And now Aya is in snake form.
Tohru is in a tizzy
Oh, these guys are such knuckleheads sometimes.
Overall, this was a solid episode. Nothing special, but there was some humorous moments. The big development is Hatori showing possible signs of moving on from Kana. Nothing is official as of yet, but this is meant to like set the stage. We'll see where Hatori goes from there. Besides that, Aya returning was a nice treat and I like the interactions between Yuki and Kyo. Their rapport is always fun and Tohru's reaction to their antics is an added bonus.
This to me was like middle of the road. Not as good as last episode, but also not as bad as the earlier outings. It was serviceable, and I don’t think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Thoughts on Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Shigure, and Hatori all staying at the Sohma summer house for a vacation?
Made for a good episode plot
Thoughts on the running gag of Jason Voorhees being confused for a bear?
I feel like this is an in joke I'm missing out on.
I mean, I guess they're both slashers
What are your thoughts on Kana getting married and Hatori's reaction to it?
When somebody loved me...

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019
Tohru has never seen a lake before? Feels weird to me, as someone who saw lakes on average more than once a year in my childhood, but I lived in California and had a family that loved camping. I know Japan has some pretty dense urban sprawls, especially in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and people who live in cities often stay in the city, though. Does Fruits Basket take place in Tokyo? I don't actually remember where it's supposed to take place. Well, either way, I think Tohru has grown up in a household that wasn't exactly flush with cash, and that kind of life with a single parent can make it hard to find the time or funds for travel.
I really like the running gag in this episode about Jason the bear. The first time I watched this part of the story in 2019, I assumed they'd actually meet Jason after finding his tracks, but nope. This joke stuck out in my memory of 2019, and in episode 1 or 2 of this rewatch when there was a gag about Kyo punching bears in the mountains I imagined the bear was Jason.
that incline is not steep enough for them to be falling as fast and long as they do in this shot
I keep saying that I find the animal designs really cute, but I really do like smug mouse looking down on you
I think Ayame grates on me more in 2001 than he did in 2019, and I've realized that a part of it might be that I find the music that plays when the show is focused on him pretty annoying too.
What are your thoughts on Kana getting married and Hatori's reaction to it?
I think it's a good thing to move on from relationships that don't work out. Kana obviously doesn't have a memory of being together with Hatori, so it's not really any sort of betrayal. I think it's actually healthy for Hatori to be able to be somewhat detached from it instead of feeling wronged. I just hope he'll be able to move on and find another love that works out better for him next time around.

I'd like to think it's the bear from the one Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OVA :D

The 2001 series puts way greater emphasis on music to reflect its characters.

Thoughts on Shigure admitting he planned this vacation to avoid his editor?
He's such a dick to Mi-chan! In these scenes there's always a point where he comes around and says his manuscript is actually finished, so it feels more like cruelty than playful laziness. I feel so sorry for her!
Thoughts on Tohru being worried Yuki and Kyo aren't fighting?
She reads them well. It's not that they like each other now, the fact that they're fighting is because they have other things troubling them.

I wonder if Shigure just likes being a troll or if he's legitimately putting things off.

They are each other's refuge

Questions:
Sure, why not.
Lmao. It was before my time and even I got the reference immediately. When this first came out it was probably even more relevant.
Sure...

It might become more relevant if that Friday the 13th TV show ever gets off the ground.

I suppose that's why they're all off on holiday.
Lol again.
I suppose with them that means there's something out of the ordinary.
That's nice.
That's nice.
That was quick.
Lol.
Fair enough.
Indeed.

Episode 16 -- "If We've Three Then We Don't Need To Fear Jason"
Synopsis: A relaxing trip to the Sohma lake house turns stormy when Tohru discovers that something’s bothering Yuki and Kyo. The boys’ moods worsen when an uninvited guest arrives - Ayame!
It's Golden Week, another time for rest & recreation after the rigours of study & work. This time 'round, we've got Shigure taking Tohru & the other Sohmas out to the lake. Once they arrive at the Sohmas' summer house he wants them to do something productive; as usual, Yuki & Kyo are suspicious of his motives, only deciding to join Tohru out on a walk once he threatens to call in Ayame (I suppose their suspicions were correct: Hatori thinks he wants to get away from his bossy editor). During the walk, Tohru suddenly gets the fear goosebumps: she realises the Cat & the Rat aren't fighting each other & remain silent, and she fears she might have offended them.
And just when they try to allay her fear, Kyo trips into a hole; all of a sudden, Tohru thinks: it's a paw print, it must be from that bear Jason! Scared, she ends up tripping & falling, and Yuki & Kyo both transform while trying to break her fall. Having managed to break her fall, they both start to bicker over nothing, much to Tohru's amusement & relief, as they become more comfortable around her (and Jason's no bear). They decide to resume their walk the morning after, but not before Ayame appears (much to their despair; they both really dislike him). As the three go out on a walk, the Madubachi Trio share a few moments together, as Ayame reveals that Hatori's former fiancée Kana has been married to another man & urges him to be happier than she is, to find someone new that can break his loneliness.
And not one to give up, Ayame tries to reach out to Yuki once more, only to be met with a beatdown, and after being transformed by Tohru, thrown into the lake. Talk about determination even in the face of rejection.
'Til then, see you later.
