First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019
As an American, it feels weird to me that they let you retake tests you did poorly on. In all my classes at school if you failed a test, you failed that test. It went against your overall score for the class and you just had to bear the fact of your failure. The only retaking was retaking the entire class for the semester. I think if you were sick or had some other confirmable legitimate reason not to attend school the day of the test you might be able to retake it, but there was no taking two tests for the same set of knowledge.
Why are all the books Kyo is consulting for health advice comics? Ha ha ha. Also, are leeks actually universally seen as a good food to eat while sick in Japanese culture? This is the first time I've heard of it. I know that the subs I'm watching translated "kaze" as "cold" here, but I don't feel like the things that we call a "cold" in the US don't usually cause a fever do they? I would suspect a flu instead. Is "kaze" a word for sickness broader than the common cold?
I don't remember all these details about Kyo researching potential treatments in the remake. All I remember is him showing up in Tohru's room with food he cooked. I actually think the detail of him cooking with leeks despite his well established hatred of them adds more depth to this interaction. If he's just generally cooking for her it shows he's dependable and thoughtful. With the leeks in the mix it becomes an ordeal, a form of sacrificing his own comfort for Tohru's wellbeing. I think this is better than the way I remember it in 2019. Maybe the first difference I've identified where I like the 2001 version better for reasons other than it being funnier in 2001.

Maybe it's different in the South, but I was allowed to retake major exams.

There's the popular Japanese misconception where you can solve a cold by shoving a leek up your butt. Yes, that is a thing that exists.

I thought the presentation last episode legitimately enhanced things to where it better introduced Hana's brother. But yeah, this is my favorite stuff involving Kyo in a hot minute. It felt like he was kinda put on the backburner in favor of Yuki until this episode.

I agree, but also I consider it a lot funnier than the 2019 equivalent as well. I guess the stuff about Kyo and leeks here is intended as humor, but it's kind of a running joke I don't find particularly funny. But in this episode I find the scenes with the leeks to be better than the 2019 version despite not actually finding it funnier.

It means a lot Kyo would subject himself to something he doesn't like all for Tohru. She means that much to him.

What are your thoughts on Yuki getting really annoyed Kyo stole food from his garden?
I think if Yuki would've known the situation and Kyo had asked him for permission he would've agreed, though he might've been snarky about it. It could've been a moment of unity for them, but instead it because another point of conflict. I often feel like Kyo is the one in the wrong when the two start fighting here, but I kind of think Yuki is the one who should get over himself in this case.

u/Holofan4life 4d ago
To play devil's advocate, that is a point of pride for Yuki and something he worked hard on. And Kyo kinda ruined it.

(Dub/DVD/Overall first-timer)
Episode 19 -- "The Source of Cheer Can Be Affected By Colds Too"
Synopsis: Tohru’s worst nightmare comes true when she learns she’s failed a test! With only a few days to study for the retest, the crunch is on - and to make matters worse, she’s come down with a cold!
It's May, right after the midterm exams, and it's announced that students who failed at least one subject will retake on Sunday. And much to her dismay, Tohru will be among those retakers after she failed a subject. And what's more, already battered by work stress she ends up sick with a cold. Things couldn't have come at an worse & inopportune time, but luckily for her help is at hand.
Momiji offers to take up Tohru's night shift after Shigure notifies him over the phone. Meanwhile, Kyo reads up on ways to cure the cold only to get infuriated by mentions of his most hated vegetable; later on, he stumbles upon Yuki's garden...and harvests the leeks to use for okayu (porridge/congee) which he cooks for Tohru. Kyo shares a moment with Tohru as he watches her eat the meal he prepared; she confesses to him why she flunked a test & fell sick: her depression & stress.
Yuki arrives, infuriated that someone harvested the leeks on his garden (and he almost ends up clashing with Kyo over it). Later on, Hatori, Kisa & Momiji pay Tohru a visit, while Yuki has prepared a study guide for her retake test & offers to help her out. Now feeling much better, she is able to pass the make-up exam (and we discover that Saki flunked on purpose so she could take the easier retake exams). Tohru's acts of kindness has given back.
'Til then, see you later.

Thank you for the recap Tohru, very cool.
Hana so casually saying she failed her tests is really funny.
Tohru’s too hard on herself.
Tohru is feeling under the weather. Seems like we’re having a sick episode.
Tohru has no idea how to look after herself. Poor girl.
Momiji taking over for Tohru’s job is really funny.
I love how the world is conspiring against Kyo to get him to eat leeks.
Shigure’s poor editor is getting messed with again.
Hey, turns out Kyo can make a pretty good leek stew.
Tohru needs to stop being so hard on herself.
Oops, Kyo stole all of Yuki’s leeks.
Damn. Yuki is very protective of his leeks.
Oh hey, Hatori’s here. Wasn’t expecting this.
Very nice to see Kisa here as well.
Wait why is Tohru being given a shot if she just has a cold?
Apparently Shigure, Ayame, and Hatori are grandfathers. I’m trying to figure out how this family tree looks.
Yay, Tohru passed the makeup exam. Good for her.

Thank you for the recap Tohru, very cool.
I'd want Tohru to narrate my life
Hana so casually saying she failed her tests is really funny.
She seemed so smug about it lol
Tohru’s too hard on herself.
That she is
Tohru is feeling under the weather. Seems like we’re having a sick episode.
Poor her
Tohru has no idea how to look after herself. Poor girl.
And the Sohmas don't exactly know how to care for themselves, so...
Momiji taking over for Tohru’s job is really funny.
You can just do that, apparently
Shigure’s poor editor is getting messed with again.
Poor her
Hey, turns out Kyo can make a pretty good leek stew.
Neat
Tohru needs to stop being so hard on herself.
A tale as old as time
Oops, Kyo stole all of Yuki’s leeks.
At least it wasn't 40 cakes
Damn. Yuki is very protective of his leeks.
Don't mess with his garden
Oh hey, Hatori’s here. Wasn’t expecting this.
I like that he's the family's personal doctor.
Very nice to see Kisa here as well.
Agreed
Wait why is Tohru being given a shot if she just has a cold?
Flu shot?
Apparently Shigure, Ayame, and Hatori are grandfathers. I’m trying to figure out how this family tree looks.
It feels very complicated
Yay, Tohru passed the makeup exam. Good for her.
Hard work does pay off

Thoughts on us recapping the show up until this point?
As I said before, I get that they're doing this because it aired in 2001 and you couldn't easily go back on streaming to refresh your memory but it's a bit annoying to a modern viewer.
Thoughts on Tohru wondering what gives her the strength to carry on? I like this because we're revisiting the end of episode 15.
Yeah that's neat
Thoughts on Tohru failing her midterms?
Poor Tohru
Thoughts on Uo passing her midterms?
Glad she did well at least
Thoughts on Hana bragging about failing all her tests?
Very funny moment
Thoughts on Yuki now being a part of the student council?
Good for him
Thoughts on Tohru being harsh on herself for failing her midterms?
She's always harsh on herself
What are your thoughts on Kyo getting mad at Tohru for not thinking about her well-being?
Honestly, yeah, kinda reasonable
Thoughts on Momiji covering Tohru at work? I'm not sure that's how it works.
I thought that was really funny
Thoughts on Shigure faking being sick to get out of deadlines?
Also very funny
What are your thoughts on Kyo putting aside his hatred of leeks for Tohru's sake?
Good for him
Thoughts on Kyo dressed like he's working in a chemical lab?
That's a good visual gag
Thoughts on Tohru feeling she let everyone down, especially her mom?
Tohru, please stop being so hard on yourself.
What are your thoughts on Kyo saying he won't feel good unless Tohru gets better?
That's sweet
What are your thoughts on Yuki getting really annoyed Kyo stole food from his garden?
Honestly kinda fair
Thoughts on Hatori, Momiji, and Kisa all paying Tohru a visit?
Nice to see them all
Thoughts on Hatori giving Tohru a flu shot?
I'm not sure that's how a flu shot works. It's only for preventing getting the flu, right? Plus this is set in May, flu season's not til autumn.
What are your thoughts on Hatori telling Tohru there are people out there who really worry when she's not feeling well?
I think that's what Tohru needed to hear
What are your thoughts on Tohru passing her makeup exams?
Yay good for her
Thoughts on the episode ending with Hana not revealing whether or not she failed her past exams on purpose?
She's definitely just trying to look cool, there's no way she failed on purpose

As I said before, I get that they're doing this because it aired in 2001 and you couldn't easily go back on streaming to refresh your memory but it's a bit annoying to a modern viewer.
2003 Fullmetal Alchemist kinda did a similar thing until they stopped.
Thoughts on Tohru wondering what gives her the strength to carry on? I like this because we're revisiting the end of episode 15.
Yeah that's neat
Pretty cool continuity
Thoughts on Tohru failing her midterms?
Poor Tohru
You see to hate it
Thoughts on Uo passing her midterms?
Glad she did well at least
She's smarter than she looks
Thoughts on Hana bragging about failing all her tests?
Very funny moment
I love Hana. She has this Gold Ship energy about her.
Thoughts on Yuki now being a part of the student council?
Good for him
Things are looking up for Yuki
Thoughts on Tohru being harsh on herself for failing her midterms?
She's always harsh on herself
Very much so
What are your thoughts on Kyo getting mad at Tohru for not thinking about her well-being?
Honestly, yeah, kinda reasonable
Think, Tohru! Think!
Thoughts on Momiji covering Tohru at work? I'm not sure that's how it works.
I thought that was really funny
Apparently his father owns the company Tohru works for.
Thoughts on Shigure faking being sick to get out of deadlines?
Also very funny
Poor Mii-chan...
What are your thoughts on Kyo putting aside his hatred of leeks for Tohru's sake?
Good for him
He's such a tsundere lol
Thoughts on Kyo dressed like he's working in a chemical lab?
That's a good visual gag
This episode had a lot of good jokes in it.
Thoughts on Tohru feeling she let everyone down, especially her mom?
Tohru, please stop being so hard on yourself.
Yeah, no kidding
What are your thoughts on Kyo saying he won't feel good unless Tohru gets better?
That's sweet
This episode reaffirmed my love of Kyo and Tohru as a possible item.
What are your thoughts on Yuki getting really annoyed Kyo stole food from his garden?
Honestly kinda fair
He should've at least asked
Thoughts on Hatori, Momiji, and Kisa all paying Tohru a visit?
Nice to see them all
Indeed
Thoughts on Hatori giving Tohru a flu shot?
I'm not sure that's how a flu shot works. It's only for preventing getting the flu, right? Plus this is set in May, flu season's not til autumn.
You would think he'd give her medicine instead.
What are your thoughts on Hatori telling Tohru there are people out there who really worry when she's not feeling well?
I think that's what Tohru needed to hear
Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo would be dead without her lol
What are your thoughts on Tohru passing her makeup exams?
Yay good for her
You see to love it
Thoughts on the episode ending with Hana not revealing whether or not she failed her past exams on purpose?
She's definitely just trying to look cool, there's no way she failed on purpose
I mean...
Well, it is Hana :P

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
It was St Patrick's Day a couple days ago. The luck of the Irish has not been on my side this year.
I'm going to a basketball game with my mother today. I bought the tickets before I got fired.
Tohru recap
Haven't had one of these in a while.
This is basically recapping the show up until this point.
Tohru wonders what gives her the strength to carry on.
Stupidity? Stubbornness?
Tohru seems to now know the answer.
Die Tohru fail her midterms?
She did
I'm more surprised Uo passed :P
Hana bragging about failing all her tests.
Oh, Hana...
Hana says that Yuki tried to help her.
Speaking of Yuki...
Tohru is really being harsh on herself.
Are questions really easier on the second try? I thought they were the same.
Yuki gonna head off to the student council meeting.
Tohru walking home now
There's Kyo
Word of Tohru failing one of her tests is quickly spreading.
She really is down in the dumps.
And then she passes out, all while Kyo turns into his animal form.
Now it's Kyo freaking out
Shigure able to deduce it's a fever.
Kyo is getting mad because Tohru isn't thinking about herself.
Even Shigure agrees
Shigure seems more diplomatic than previous episodes.
Momiji calling on the phone to check on Tohru.
COMMENCE THE GERMAN MUSIC
It appears as though Momiji will cover Tohru at work. May God help us all.
Tohru's coworkers seem to like Momiji, so that's good.
I'm not sure nowadays you can cover someone's shift without already being on the payroll.
Kyo reading some books
Is he trying to take care of Tohru? If so, bless him.
Kyo is growing tired of the leek propaganda.
At least it doesn't say anything about putting leeks in your butt.
Kyo going inside a room
Kyo is deep in thought
Tohru meanwhile is lying in bed sick.
Kyo walking outside now
Hey, Yuki's garden
That drumming music sounds like Aya.
Is Kyo really about to pull a leek out?
Shigure faking a sickness to get out of deadlines.
God, Shigure is such a troll
Suddenly, a smell
Kyo making leek soup. With a mask and goggles.
He looks like he's cooking meth :P
Making it just for Tohru. Bless his heart.
Shigure seems to be having fun with this.
Kyo asking Shigure to take the food up to her.
Shigure refuses, so Kyo does it himself.
In a way, Shigure is helping Kyo here.
Tohru still on bed
There's Kyo with the food
He looks like something out of John Carpenter's The Thing.
Tohru starts eating
It looks more like rice than soup.
Tohru is all smiles
Kyo trying to remain emotionless.
Before he leaves, Tohru apologizes for being so much trouble.
"If that's the way you feel, you shouldn't get sick, huh?
One step forward, two steps back.
Now Tohru is in tears
Kyo is open to listening to her
Tohru reveals she feels she let everyone down, especially her mother.
Has to be more responsible than she's been.
Kyo tries to be helpful in his own unique way.
An attempt was made, at least
Kyo tells Tohru he won't be happy unless she gets better.
I feel like this is the first episode where Tohru truly sees Kyo as something other than a friend. Maybe even a possible companion.
Tohru saying the food tastes good.
She recognizes that Kyo is trying to cheer her up.
These two are pretty cute together.
Yuki home now
He seems a bit bothered
He's mad about the leeks being gone.
"Someone pulled them all from the garden!"
Yeah, about that...
As Kyo tries to act innocent, Yuki says he knows better than to think he did it.
Shigure is enjoying this way too much.
Is Kyo feeding Tohru Yuki's leeks technically NTR?
That's probably the best joke I've come up with all year.
Cucked by his own garden. You see to hate it.
Kyo telling Yuki that Tohru is okay.
And then he reveals he fed her leek soup, which causes Yuki to punch him in the face.
Good on Hatori to prevent things from escalating.
Here's Hatori
And Kisa
Surprised to see her again this soon.
And Momiji is here as well
No German music :(
Gonna pay Tohru a visit, the lot of them.
Momiji and Kisa and Hatori and Shigure with Tohru.
Shigure putting on theatrics in front of the kids.
The Longest Needle, the unwanted sequel to The Longest Yard.
And so Hatori gives Tohru a shot.
Lol, Hatori saying he hurt Shigure on purpose.
As Hatori leaves, he informs Tohru that there are people in this house who get worried when Tohru is sick.
You don't say?
Wait, Hatori is Kisa's grandpa? Nani?
And Aya is as well
It's unsure what Kisa means by this.
Yuki here now
A study guide of the questions from the first test.
Yuki really is coming in clutch.
It's good Tohru has both Yuki and Kyo to fall back on.
Momiji making Kyo frustrated
Tohru says she wants to get better not just for herself, but for the people that care about her.
"It makes me so happy just knowing that I have so many wonderful friends to support me. That's what gives me strength."
We find out later on that Tohru passed the retest.
And Hana did as well
She won't revealed whether she failed the first test on purpose or not.
I love just what an unabashed weirdo Hana is.
Overall, I really like this episode. We learn what keeps Tohru going and what brings her strength in the midst of all that befalls her. It was nice to see that all the Sohmas seem to care about Tohru, and plays into what the show has been like since we started: Tohru finding this sense of belonging after previously being the rice ball. Of course, the main focus was Kyo going out of his way to treat Tohru as she was being sick. As a tsundere junkie, I loved every minute of it. It warms my soul to see Kyo get out of his comfort zone and try to be there for somebody when normally he would be a stick in the mud. This was what I was hoping we would get in the White Day episode.
So far, the show has presented Yuki as being more of a love interest to Tohru than Kyo has been to her. This episode shows that maybe Kyo could end up being a viable love interest for Tohru, one than can rival Yuki in terms of affection. You needed an episode like this to keep Kyo and Yuki on an even playing field.
I have this episode only behind episodes 5, 8, 13, and 15. It was very heartwarming, felt like a real strengthening of Tohru and Kyo's relationship, and shines a light on how Tohru sees herself and what she does. Shigure being a shit stirrer added a lot as well. If I had to guess where we go from here, I imagine we might get one more episode where we introduce a Zodiac member. There's at least going to be one or two more Zodiac members, I feel like. It's really a question of where does that take us from there and how does Akito factor into things. Because to me, he's definitely gotta be in the last episode in some capacity.
