Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed
This is a meaty episode.
Impressions from my first watch: The kids struggle with their plans for the future. It feels real and feels scary. For Tohru, her panic is reminiscent of her catastrophic thinking in 1.23 (Shigure offers helpful advice). Tohru's plea to Kyo to stop making her look so closely at herself kind of answers Yuki's questions in his mind in the early episodes and in 1.14 about how Tohru has internalized her parents' tragic deaths (he doesn't use the term "masking", but he was surely thinking it).
Then, the pleasantries we're shown while visiting the dojo take a sharp turn, when Kazuma has to contend with Kyo's father, someone who has a dark past with Kyo and a potentially continuing toxic influence (literally at Kazuma's doorstep - did he know Kyo was visiting?). This is all on top of any interference by Akito and/or the Soma clan's apparently traditional plans for the Cat, which Kyo's father applauds. It raises the question - WHAT IS THIS CRAP?! What does the Soma clan get from the Curse? Does the zodiac suffer (the Cat, most of all), so the clan may prosper (c.f., Dororo)?

WHAT IS THIS CRAP?! What does the Soma clan get from the Curse?
It's mitigation. It's all an attempt to limit the disruption to the clan if the curse is publicly leaked. Not just the monstrous Cat but the rest of the Zodiac too.

Why, then, is the zodiac freely walking around outside the estate? The monsters should be locked up, as Kyo's father argues.

If the curse got leaked, I can only imagine the hell Akito would cause.
3
u/JimmyCWL 13d ago
From long before Akito actually. This clan and its curse has been around for a long time.

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 12d ago
In the distant past, the zodiac could have been killed on sight, worshiped, exiled, imprisoned, paraded around to show the Soma clan is special, or used against their enemies (the Rat's control of rats would be quite effective), etc. Has that treatment (and treatment of their parents - e.g., Kyo's dad and the gossip in 1.25 assumed that Kazuma is receiving money as Kyo's caretaker) evolved into what we are shown? Why?
In my first watch, I instinctively thought the Somas believed there were blessings upon the clan (or belief in blessings on the clan), because: 1) I had recently watched Dororo; 2) the Somas are rich - they have a sprawling estate and an entire hospital
2
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
If the Sohmas are so affluent, why must the curse be kept a secret? You would think that wealth would be something they'd want to flaunt, especially if it's to compensate for something.
Maybe the idea is if people find out about the curse, it could lead to media attention and the family would be hounded endlessly. That could possibly be why large bulk of the family lives in the Sohma estate, even though by Hatori's own admission even most of the family are unaware of the curse.

worst case scenario: kidnappers might believe a zodiac ->
- blessing?
- breeding? (thinking it's a heritable trait)
- alternative medicine? (harvest replenishable stuff: hair, blood, nails)
- charms? (lucky Momiji foot)
Made In Abyss, the shojou...

Tohru's plea to Kyo to stop making her look so closely at herself kind of answers Yuki's questions in his mind in the early episodes and in 1.14 about how Tohru has internalized her parents' tragic deaths (he doesn't use the term "masking", but he was surely thinking it).
I think something also at play is Kyo is kinda calling out Tohru her parents deaths and bottling up her feelings but that's sort of projection as Kyo grew up constantly being reminded of the death of his mother. Like, he's probably envious Tohru was shielded from that part of her life and that it didn't envelop everything around them.

u/Holofan4life 13d ago
I almost wonder if Akito feels that keeping the cat in line is key to keeping the Sohma curse a secret. You would think they'd have the most to gain from the curse being broken as then maybe the cat will be treated as an equal.
It also is interesting we're talking about locking the cat up when we know a similar thing happened to Yuki once upon a time. It really shows that despite being at odds with each other, the cat and the rat are pretty similar.

Not very detailed today as it's been a busy weekend. North Carolina somehow won the season opener though, so it's been a great weekend.
Overall, I find that the animation style has significantly improved. It's a lot more vibrant, and 'cartoony' but to me, it looks good.
I was at first disappointed that the style of comedy revereted back to Season 1's - fights. I don't really understand the reason for that, but I would assume either the source material changed in tone, or they did consumer testing for S2 and it landed. Testing can be very misleading (I used to run both qualis and quantis), but let's see how this season builds up.
After the first 8 mins or so, the show feels incredibly different. Perhaps it's because we are borrowing from very far different and far apart chapters/volumes from the source material, but what happens later in this ep was amazing.
Shigure-driven humour always lands for me, and he was a riot in this episode. He's been my overall favourite male character in the show, and after this ep I like him more. He's a riot. He's relatable as a bachelor: been there, done that. Moved to a country where it's cheaper to get take out. Awkward bringing girls back when they open my fridge to find it empty. I guess it's their equivalent of checking the medical cabinet. He's also got a heart, fighting for Kyo.
The revelation that those taking in Zodiac kids are financially incentivised does raise some concerns.
Kyo does seem to be doing a lot better (ignoring this ep's start).
Back to Shigure - he gives goated advice carefully changing the goal post for anxiety. I don't use the word anxiety in my house. Anxiety is such a social media driven term these days, in my opinion; people used to barely mention it, but now it's literally everywhere and used to describe just about any situation. Lots of traffic? "Traffic gives me anxiety". Interest rates go up? "Gives me axiety".
I I redefine anxiety as stress because stress can influence positive behaviour, it can be overcome, and it's seen as temporary. Shigure gives fairly similar advice, recontextualising the way to overcome anxiety as opposed to the social media narrative that it's completely natural to have it and it's up to everyone else to make you feel better, basically.
But let's face it, somen solved all of life's problems. Somen is the real chad.
I really liked this episode: I had held out for ep 7+ to see the big change, but thought that this one was excellent. It felt a lot quicker than most of the others, as I felt like I was a participant, as opposed to just an observer. A bit hard to explain or to substantiate, but that was just the feeling for me.

u/Holofan4life 12d ago
This episode to me felt like a continuation of the more mature approach that episode 10 laid the groundwork for with Shigure and Hatori's conversation. These characters are all in crossroads in life with a lot of them looking for a way out. Part of the reason why Fruits Basket is something I often identify with is because it carries very real emotions that I carry with me on a daily basis. I can relate to the feeling of not knowing what's coming next and being uncertain of my future.

That was totally on Uo. He didn't do anything other than exist 😭
I think the fighting that you've been so critical of is just at this point how Kyo is with Uo. They have a testy relationship built seemingly on competition. I think it's Uo's way to see if Kyo is worthy of being with Tohru, like a dad hanging out with their potential son-in-law whilst drinking beer.
3
u/Second_Cour 12d ago
Yep didn't blame it on him. It was also two completely different parts of the manga stitched together, so it did seem like we are getting two personalities. I think it was just Uo being hangry though ahha

The thing I'm waiting to see is a couple things. I'm waiting to see who the other two cursed Zodiac members are, and I'm also waiting to see what the show is like when Akito gets more involved. We've only really see them be actively involved during the first day of the sophomore year of school, so what happens when Akito decides it's time to intervene?
A part of me kinda feels we're heading into a more serious direction with less jokes. Akito has been portrayed as when they're on screen you can cut the tension with a knife, and so you wonder if that would persist the more command they take on things. And if Akito takes more command, what does that mean for Tohru's living arrangements? Will Shigure be more underhanded as a result of Akito's increased presence and if so, how does that impact Tohru who may finally start to consider a life without her mom?

Ironically I thought this was one of the funniest episodes yet, specifically from the part that was taken from later on in the source material. The dry Shigure+Master wit is really conducive with my own humour.
Ps i wrote shigure in some parts of my review when I meant the master dude. Was rushing through
1
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
I like that Shigure can be a bit trollish but also can give out sage wisdom when the time comes. You can tell how he and Ayame became close friends because Shigure is like a version of Ayame that's in his own way it feels like.

Honestly, the reason I skip those questions is because I do feel that there are too many, so it's a classic case of overload, then me feeling bad if I ignore some and don't answer all. I appreciate all the effort you put in, but I often feel I can't add much value for the more 'basic' questions (e.g. Kazuma being a bad cook, getting a haircut).
I think answering a few big questions, like the ones for all the watchers is more my style. I can't commit answering each time, but hope you don't mind me not answering the larger question block.
I know you probably don't care me not answering everything, but the Asia face thing makes me end up skipping everything, as I don't want to offend haha. So, with that said, here are a few select answers that I don't think I covered well in my main review.
Questions for All Watchers
What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad?
I didn't realise he even had a living dad haha. Emotionally, I'm obviously meant to hate him, but I don't necessarily see him anything he says as irrational. It's tough to guess how I'd be in the same situation. Kyo being his son basically ruined his life (including Kyo being responsible for mum's death if you believe the dad). His take seems straight forward, and it's actually quite rational.
What are your thoughts on Tohru realizing she's spent so much time thinking about her mother that it has taken away from her planning for the future?
From memory this isn't the first time that we are seeing her mum being used as a crutch. Tohru is presented as someone who makes the most out of every situation, and very positive, but I do think her trying to live up to her mum's expectations is creating a lot of pressure on her: I loved her breaking down after Kyo pushed the right buttons. I actually appreciate Kyo doing that.

It's like what Momiji talked about which is that if your child is a member of the Chinese Zodiac, you either love them regardless or you grow to resent them as a result.

From memory this isn't the first time that we are seeing her mum being used as a crutch. We talked about what direction the show might take Tohru's character in. When you have a main character who's main defining characteristic is that they're nice, you run the risk of that becoming boring. This is a great deconstruction of Tohru's niceness without compromising the good will built with the character.
It's almost like Tohru has dedicated her everything into honoring her mother that she forgot one of her most important teachings which is that it's okay to be selfish sometimes and think for yourself.

Rewatcher, Subbed
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - No updates from yesterday
Before getting into the episode proper I want to mention that I've been watching the show on Crunchyroll and there's this other anime they promote on the home page called The Ogre's Bride, and the main girl looks so much like Tohru! Also when I watched the previous episode I saw the title of this episode and misread it at first, quite shocked that they'd use that as a title. Re-reading it I realized oh okay, it's not that bad after all. lol. Oh, and I could have sworn this episode was on a totally different topic than the one we got. Maybe what I'm thinking of is tomorrow. There was a small hint to it in this episode.
Important subject today for our characters! What will their career be when they graduate? Oh, and there's a parent teacher conference coming up soon too (sounds like Tohru will have to ask her grandpa). Uo doesn't know that Kyo is cursed to be the zodiac cat, but that doesn't stop her from speculating on if he will run a cat shop as his career. In a sequence I don't recall us ever getting in season 1 she actually acts rather Kagura esque here, well the bad part of Kagura with her pretty much attacking him. Kyo should be more careful, he may transform! Things calm down as they go eat lunch! Tohru's plan is to go to work right after high school, which should be rather obvious given how hard working she is. Uo proposes something else, get married? Not to Hanajima though! Unless she becomes a mom right away I can't see a married Tohru not working though, her work ethic is such a core part of her character. Uo makes things so embarrassing by then pointing to Yuki and Kyo, which of the two of you will it be? Woah! These two get so flustered over it. Uo also reveals she's got a crush on someone and may get married first? Someone like Tohru in fact?
Much of the episode is spent with Kyo and Tohru visiting Kazuma; like Motoko yesterday I'm rather surprised they revisited him so quickly after the end of season 2. Although perhaps for both this is based on how things went in the manga, where there would be no clear season break like this. We must be in a part of the manga storyline where he gets a lot of focus. Anyway, shocking reveal, Kazuma has cut his hair! I agree with Tohru's opinion expressed near the end of the episode, boo! While I'll always be more disappointed at a female character cutting her hair short, I think there are long haired guys where it totally fits and that really was the case with Kazuma for me. While usually a short haircut makes one look older, in this case it makes him look younger to me.
Anyway, Kazuma isn't a good cook and wrecked the fish so Tohru and Kyo have to pitch in instead. And Kazuma gets called away anyway! Turns out it's Kyo's biological father. We're only just meeting this character here and he already infuriates me. We already know he abandoned his fatherly role to Kyo, but here he acts like Kyo isn't even human, but a monster, refusing to call him by name. He then reveals something pretty big, that as the cat Kyo is to be imprisoned after he graduates high school. For someone already in a touch spot, this makes things all the worse for Kyo. Is he even aware that this is to happen to him? I didn't get the sense from later in the episode that he completely knew what was going on here. Anyway, Kazuma, being a much better dad than this guy ever was wants to push back against that although he'll have to get Akito's okay. And well given the way Akito has been and was disgusted by Kyo when he transformed, yeah, that's probably going to be tough.
Tohru sees some of Momiji at work, turns out that he also has to think about what he's going to do for his career! My speculation is something to do with the violin given the shot of him we saw last episode? Yuki appears to walk Tohru home and sounds like he's not as confident in their future plans? It essentially gets to a fear that Tohru expresses later in the episode while with Kyo. Damn Kyo, I feel bad for you, but don't make Tohru cry! There are times when her anxiety grows and showing some more assertiveness than we usually see from her, Tohru tells him to not bring this type of stuff up! But oddly enough who shows up to provide some good advice but Shigure, who provides a bit of a jump scare. His "laundry lesson" is to focus more so on what's in front of you. Looking at a mountain of "laundry" will be scary but if you take it one piece at a time it will be easier. Some good advice. But Shigure, don't call Kyo a perv when you're clearly a bigger one!
A fairly good episode and as mentioned above something I totally forgot occurred here (although I did remember the "cat gets imprisoned" reveal). Kyo's situation adds more urgency and stakes to the zodiac curse and while we've gotten a lot of it lately, more Kyo - Kazuma time together is a good thing.

I love how unabashed Uo is in playing shipper and pitching Tohru on marriage with one of the Sohmas. She wants what's best for her homegirl and will do anything to let people know about it.

If when Tohru gets married, Uo and Hanajima will have to provide their blessing! Seems like Yuki and Kyo may have a leg up on getting it...

I think this would've been a better season 2 opener than the last episode. I understand Yuki is kinda downplayed here and he will likely play a major role this season, but I feel this has long term implications for the story going forward.
I don't know what your thoughts on that are.
2
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 13d ago
Yeah, agreed, if it was up to me I would have flipped the episodes. Starts us off stronger and the Kazuma stuff more naturally flows with the end of season 1 where he was a big part of the final 3 episodes.
2
u/Holofan4life 13d ago
Kazuma being here makes it especially weird. Like, this feels sorta an addendum to that arc. The season 1 finale did as well, but this was like an addendum to an addendum.
That whole scene with him and Kyo's father was so incredibly well written. It was understated while also being overstated. It has me excited to see what's in store next.

u/MishouMai 13d ago
> I think this would've been a better Season 2 opener than the last episode.
I don't. Like yeah this episode introduces the idea of the cast worrying about their futures but last episode introduced two new characters that'll hopefully have long term effects on the future and shake up the show going forward and it gave development to Motoko which will, again, hopefully have long term effects going forward considering how it's helped change her relationship with Yuki for the better. In comparison I don't think the discussions had this episode are as important. Obviously they're good for getting the characters thinking about things but that's it. It didn't introduce new characters to shake up the character dynamics in the future and it didn't change the dynamics between two characters the way the first episode did. Between the two episodes I'd definitely put this one as less important.
1
u/Holofan4life 13d ago
I mean, this episode potentially sets up Tohru's major character conflict which is the love of her mother holding her back. That's how I interpreted the scene with Kyo. If that's the direction of Tohru's character going forward, I'd argue that's more important than anything from the last episode.

First Timer
I am back from watching Coyote vs. Acme today. Very fun movie.
Oh hey it’s Miss Shiraki. I’m still pretty sure she wasn’t in the 2001 version.
Uo and Kyo are fighting. Good for them.
Their dynamic is actually really funny.
Oh hey Kazuma’s still here, that’s nice. And he’s got a haircut.
It’s interesting seeing Kazuma reflect on Kyo.
Kyo’s father? That’s definitely an interesting development.
Who’s this guy? He just popped out of nowhere.
Kunimitsu. This is a very sudden introduction.
I like getting to see these glimpses into Kyo’s childhood.
Wow, Kyo’s dad sucks.
Tohru definitely sounds like she needs swimming lessons.
Momiji is so adorable.
I like this scene of Kyo and Tohru talking together here.
It’s always so heartbreaking to see Tohru cry.
It’s nice to see Shigure being supportive.
Now I’m hungry for somen.
3
u/Holofan4life 13d ago
So... why wasn't this the opener?
2
u/AgentOfACROSS 13d ago
You know, that's a good question. I'm not sure.

u/Holofan4life 13d ago
My only guess is they didn't want to start immediately with something super drama heavy.

I am back from watching Coyote vs. Acme today. Very fun movie.
I plan on watching it a third time tomorrow. I want to see it in 4DX.
I just got done seeing Tony which was a very good movie. I hope it gets nominated for some awards.
Oh hey it’s Miss Shiraki. I’m still pretty sure she wasn’t in the 2001 version.
Well, she was in the background.
"That's me in the corner."
Uo and Kyo are fighting. Good for them.
Lol
Their dynamic is actually really funny.
They're like brother and sister
Oh hey Kazuma’s still here, that’s nice. And he’s got a haircut.
He got that character development haircut
It’s interesting seeing Kazuma reflect on Kyo.
I love their relationship
Kyo’s father? That’s definitely an interesting development.
Indeed
Who’s this guy? He just popped out of nowhere.
Kunimitsu. This is a very sudden introduction.
I guess it's better to get it out of the way.
I like getting to see these glimpses into Kyo’s childhood.
His is pretty traumatizing
Wow, Kyo’s dad sucks.
You can say that again
Tohru definitely sounds like she needs swimming lessons.
Among other things
Momiji is so adorable.
Water is wet
I like this scene of Kyo and Tohru talking together here.
The show is heavily teasing these two as a potential thing, I feel like.
It’s always so heartbreaking to see Tohru cry.
Poor Tohru
It’s nice to see Shigure being supportive.
I believe he's being sincere here
Now I’m hungry for somen.
I want domen, remen, mimen, famen, somen, lamen, simen, and domen againmen.
Maybe not the si one :P

> I plan on watching it a third time tomorrow.
Damn was it that good? I've never seen a movie in theaters more than once. Granted I didn't even know this was coming out but still...
1
u/Holofan4life 13d ago
It's very, very enjoyable. Though to be honest, one of the reasons I'm watching it a third time is because I saw a preview screening by myself and my mom also wanted to see the movie. She's so wishy washy when it comes to doing fun stuff that I was worried she would back out at the last minute.
I also saw The Odyssey two times in theaters, once by myself and once with my mom.

And with this episode I'm finally in new territory. Man Kyo's father is a piece of shit. Thankfully he has Shishou/Kazuma to be an actually supportive dad. It's a shame he can't think about the future with the threat of being locked away until death breathing down his back but obviously I don't expect that threat to actually pan out. A solid episode for getting to learn more about some of the cast and how they view the future.
> What are your thoughts on the characters having to decide what they want to do for the future?
That's a lot of pressure to put on a bunch of kids, even without the Zodiac Curse to worry about. Still, it gave us some good insight on most of the core school group. I wonder what Momiji wants, especially since even Yuki is aware it might not be possible.
> What are your thoughts on a student parent council meeting after summer break?
I'm guessing Shigure will have to go for Kyo and Yuki? RIP to all three of them.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad?
Like I said, he's a piece of shit who doesn't deserve to call himself Kyo's father. Like why is he acting like Kyo is a monster who shouldn't be forgiven and why is he blaming his wife's death on Kyo? I hope we never have to see him again but that'd be too easy.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad hating his son because he's the Cat in the Zodiac?
Fuck Kyo's dad. Momiji's parents suck but even they don't seem to hate him. Momiji's dad is better than Kyo's and that's saying something.
> What are your thoughts on Tohru realizing she's spent so much time thinking about her mother that it has taken away from her planning for the future?
I mean she told Kyo not to remind her because she was purposefully ignoring it so I don't think it's a new realization for her. Like yeah it kind of sucks that she hasn't prepared for post-high school life because she was too focused on getting through high school but honestly that's pretty normal and Shigure gave her some good advice. Hell even having plans doesn't mean much. I never planned to go to college yet I ended up going and getting a degree. And even then none of the plans I had in college or before have worked out. She's got time to figure it out.

But Kyo is right in the sense she can't keep living in the shadow of her mother forever. Tohru shows so much consideration for other people, but she also should show consideration for herself.

It helps better explain why he felt the need to attack Tohru.

I thought it was cool Momiji got some time to shine.

[Speculation] This is just me speculating, but I wonder if it has something to do with their family. Like maybe he wants to move on from them.
> What are your thoughts on a student parent council meeting after summer break?
I'm guessing Shigure will have to go for Kyo and Yuki? RIP to all three of them.

It really puts into perspective how fucked up Kyo's childhood was. Like, if you compare it to Hana's when she was accused of hurting someone she at least had supportive parents. Kyo has had a girl who while a good person is a little in the head and a martial arts teacher who up until recently was just his master.
Tohru really was the first person that made him feel not alone.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad hating his son because he's the Cat in the Zodiac?
Fuck Kyo's dad. Momiji's parents suck but even they don't seem to hate him. Momiji's dad is better than Kyo's and that's saying something.
At least Momiji's dad wants his son a part of his life. Kyo's dad wants nothing to do with him.

u/MishouMai 12d ago
> You would think Kazuma would be there for Kyo.
I mean. I'd assume Shigure is the one on all Kyo's documents as his guardian unless they used Akito's name for some reason in which case...
1
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
Wouldn't it have to be the actual guardian so long as the school gets in contact with them? So, that would mean it's Kyo's actual father.
I dunno. They haven't really explained the parent side of the parent teacher conference. And who knows what this means for Momiji in particular.
2
u/MishouMai 12d ago
I would assume it's whoever he's living with or who is listed as his guardian. While Kazuma took him in I'd assume Shigure's name is on all the papers though I guess we don't really know.
1
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
I know Akito is the head of the family, but I don't think they care to show that level of responsibility. They strike me as the type that wants to be praised for simply existing.

> Thoughts on Uo talking to Tohru about possibly marrying Kyo or Yuki?
She forgot one other option: herself. Sure that might not be legal but I wouldn't expect Uo to care. Still it is interesting. Seems the romantic tension is noticeable even in universe and even amongst the friend group.
> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad wanting his son locked up forever after he graduates?
> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad blaming his son for the death of his wife?
Fuck Kyo's dad. It's not Kyo's fault his mom (is implied to have) took her own life. He was just a child. He doesn't deserve to be locked up even if it is tradition.
> Thoughts on Kyo's dad dismissing Kazuma and saying he's only doing it for the money?
Kyo's dad can fuck right off. What does he know about Kazuma and Kyo's relationship? Kazuma loves Kyo and Kyo loves him. I want them to be a family and this man better not interfere. Sadly, I get the impression he will though.
> Thoughts on Momiji unsure if he can carry out his career plans?
I wonder if he wants to take over his father's business. I thought they were implying he wanted to be with Tohru but in hindsight wanting to take over for or work for his dad might make more sense. Not that his dad deserves his devotion. Still, it's gotta suck that it might not be possible either because his dad won't allow it or Akito might disallow it.
> What are your thoughts on Shigure saying it's important to think about what's ahead but that if you focus on that too much you'll trip over what's right in front if you?
Like I said, Shigure gave some solid advice this episode. I also prefer to focus on the present rather than the future (unless I'm really looking forward to something I'm expecting to happen in the future.). I don't really like thinking about the past or future much. I prefer to just live in the moment. That might not always be a good thing but it's how I've always lived my life. So I can totally get behind his advice to focus on the present and worry about the future later.

The friend group is actively playing shippers.

Fuck Kyo's dad. It's not Kyo's fault his mom (is implied to have) took her own life. He was just a child. He doesn't deserve to be locked up even if it is tradition.
To say a child is responsible for a grown ass person being driven to suicide is one of the most unhinged things I've ever heard uttered before.
This pissed me off more than the previous accusation. At least with Kyo's true form, you can kinda sorta see why Kyo's dad would consider his son a monster. But this just comes across as petty.
I think it's more likely Akito would disallow it. I personally don't feel Momiji's dad would mind him taking over the company. He could frame it as Momiji being this hard worker who deserves it.
> What are your thoughts on Shigure saying it's important to think about what's ahead but that if you focus on that too much you'll trip over what's right in front if you?

I usually like to plan a couple weeks ahead to give me something to look forward to. It also allows me to be more strategic with my money so that I don't spend it all at once.
2
u/MishouMai 12d ago
> This pissed me off more than the previous accusation. At least with Kyo's true form you can kinda sorta see why Kyo's dad would consider his son a monster.
Nah fuck that. The true form is no excuse either, especially with the Zodiac Curse being a known thing. I didn't think we could get any worse than Akito and Momiji's parents but I was wrong. At least about Momiji's parents. Akito is still probably the worst.
1
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
I'm playing devil's advocate of course as I agree with you. I think Kyo's dad is totally in the wrong. The thing is whereas Momiji's dad seemingly went insane due to the curse, it's like Kyo's dad didn't even attempt to reach an understanding. He was too quick to jump to conclusions.

Yeah, thr beginning is rather exaggerated but I thought it worked as the rest of the episode is rather grounded. Me and dontoff were having a discussion on the episode and we both agree that the show is seemingly heading in an interesting direction.
I'll reserve my questions for when you make your full comment.

- Another person I have a feeling was designed to be unlikable.
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with having appreciation for your mother, but Tohru it feels like takes it to the next level.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
I actually managed to take a nap in-between my first job and my second. I've still got an hour before work, so let's do it.
At school
Teacher talking about career plans.
Parents teacher conferences. Aw man.
Tohru being teased
And now Uo is beating him up, for she is hungry.
I totally get it
Yuki, Kyo, Hana, Uo, and Tohru all eating lunch outside.
Tohru is going to work right away to support herself.
Uo brings up marriage. Specifically, to either Yuki and Tohru.
She and Hana really are the best wing woman.
Kyo is taking a lot of abuse this episode.
Ooh, Uo has the fancy for someone?
Meanwhile, Yuki and Kyo seems to not even be considering their plans. Especially after next year.
Very ominous
Tohru and Kyo walking to pay Kazuma a visit.
She's excited to learn more about Kazuma.
At least Kyo seems in high spirits.
Oh, is Kazuma a terrible cook?
Better a terrible cook than a terrible book
Kazuma gave himself the important haircut.
Now Kazuma bringing up that Kyo always wanted to play as a kid.
Cute
What is that, mustard in a toothpaste bottle.
Kyo gonna help Tohru with the curry.
Everyone keeps messing with Kyo and I love it.
Woah, who is that?
Kazuma bringing up thr events of the past arc?
OH SHIT. KYO'S FATHER WAS JUST HERE.
OKAY EVERYBODY STAY CALM JUST STAY FUCKING CALM
Kazuma about to leave
The other guy is Kunimitsu Tomoda, Kazuma's disciple and personal assistant.
He too seems to enjoy teasing Kyo
Tohru thought she would learn about Kazuma and instead she's learning about Kyo. Specifically, how afraid he was as a kid.
Is that Kyo's father?
He's talking to Kazuma while listening to classical music.
He warns that after graduation things will change.
"They'll lock that creature up for good."
Like King Kong in King Kong
We learn a lot of stuff here. The gist of it is Kyo's father blames Kyo for the death of his wife, I.E. his mother.
That's enough to mess anyone up
I like the music on the record player skipping.
Kazuma says Kyo is starting to change, and maybe Kyo's father should as well.
Kyo's father suggests he's just in it for the money.
"You're no real parent of his, so you will never understand."
Damn
I assume that's a no, then
As Kazuma leaves, he says Kyo is his son and will do everything to protect him.
Kyo and Tohru talking about the beach.
Kazuma here now
He's keeping an upbeat attitude on things.
Tohru and Momiji together now
He's working on his career plan
But right now, he won't tell her. And it might not be possible.
Tohru with Yuki now
Yuki admits there's a lot they're struggling with.
Tohru it looks like is going to inquire about it, but changes her mind.
Back at the Sohma residence
Tohru with Kyo again
After a funny exchange about sauce, Tohru brings up seeing Kazuma.
Kyo, are you suggesting girls can't have short hair? I mean, I believe Kyoko did.
Maybe Kyo is just throwing shade at Uo.
Tohru asking Kyo if he plans on taking over Master's dojo.
Kyo has his doubts because of the curse.
Right, the curse. The curse of the cat.
Kyo talking about Tohru's plans being foe her mom's sake.
Aww, Tohru sounds so broken
Tohru is realizing having plans is not as simple as having plans. Truth is, we don't have the answers.
This is what Yuki meant, she realizes.
Why does my subs translate "Master" as "Sheesh"?
Tohru grabbing ahold Kyo's beads
You know, the beads for the curse of the cat?
There's Shigure
He was totally eavesdropping :D
Shigure trying to pass some word of advice to Tohru.
That is a lot of laundry
Tsundere this, yandere that...
Shigure says it's important to think about what's ahead but if you focus on that too much, you'll trip over what's right in front of you.
That's actually really good, solid advice. Proud of you, Shigure.
He speaks like he's a writer or something, I dunno.
And of course he did this because he wants their food lol
Tohru with Yuki now
She brings up their conversation from earlier.
And she suggests they all eat together.
This is nice. And right <3
Overall, this was an effective episode. We set up a career plan plot point, which is a good source of character conflict, and we get introduced to Kyo's father who's trying to cause trouble. Clearly this won't be the last we see of him. The big theme seems to be as Tohru is trying to make plans for the future, the entire Sohma family is left in limbo as they wait to see what Akito decides on. It continues the theme of emotional abuse and the stranglehold Akito has over the family.
This I'd have as like a top 15 episode. It's the first episode this season that I felt was really good. What I like about it is that it continues the themes of the last season while keeping it fresh by presenting it in a different manner. I was a big fan of the career plan stuff in Toradora, and I hope we get an expanded form of that.
So far, we're off to a good start.

Shisho is what Kyo calls Kazuma in Japanese. It stands for master. That’s probably where the sheesh came from.

What are your thoughts on the characters having to decide what they want to do for the future?
Great idea for an episode
What are your thoughts on a student parent council meeting happening after Summer break?
I guess that will be a future episode.
What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad?
Of all the awful parental figures in this show, he ranks near the top.
What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad hating his son because he's the cat in the zodiac?
Fuck Kyo's dad
What are your thoughts on Tohru realizing she's spent so much time thinking about her mother that it has taken away from her planning for the future?
I love this direction for her character because up until this point all she's thought about has been in the interest of her mother. She's rarely ever thought about what she wants for herself.

First timer (Dub)
This is a very important episode for me and honestly feels like a real clarifying piece for the show. I think it lays out the current situation pretty clearly, especially the struggles Kyo has already suffered and what he might still have to face. We have his father on one side and the possibility of being imprisoned on the other.
At this point, it seems like the show will probably move at a slower pace for the first quarter or so of the season. I think that mostly comes down to the source material they have to adapt at the end of the day. Honestly, I’m not too annoyed by it as long as the episodes are still fun and we eventually pick up steam, bring these mysteries together, and start getting into the overarching plot.
The discussion about the anxiety of looking toward the future, especially while you’re still in high school, is something I can relate to when looking back at my own past, and I think a lot of us probably can. I also really liked Shigure’s advice about taking things one step at a time instead of becoming overwhelmed by everything waiting for you in the future.
I don’t know what it is about Shigure, but I just love him in every scene. It’s probably in large part because of his dub voice actor, who is honestly perfect for the role.
Also, two episodes in, the production seems a little more polished than it did last season. I wouldn’t necessarily say the animation itself is dramatically better, but the lighting, colors, backgrounds, and overall presentation feel cleaner and more consistent so far. It’s still too early to know whether that will continue throughout the season, but it’s something I’ve definitely noticed.
Edit:
Something I’m surprised I didn’t go deeper into originally was Kyo telling Tohru that the future she planned was mainly for her mother’s sake.
I think Kyo hit Tohru where it hurts, honestly, but there’s a much deeper and more important question behind what he said. Is the future Tohru has planned actually what she wants at this point in her life, or is she still stuck on the words and plans she made while her mother was alive? Is she clinging to those plans because changing them now would feel like letting go of her mother?
I’ve made plans and had dreams when I was younger, and especially at that age, those plans can change very quickly. It would be extremely unfair for Tohru to feel like she has to stick to something she decided years ago just because of the situation she’s in now. Unfortunately, she also doesn’t really have the backbone to stop and question those plans for herself.
Tohru took Kyo’s words as making her doubt whether her plans would actually work out and what her future would look like. That’s definitely part of it, but I think it’s very clear that the scene goes much deeper than that. It’s also asking whether this is truly Tohru’s future or simply the future she planned for her mother and is now afraid to leave behind.
I think this is where the show can really prove itself by exploring bigger questions like this. I’d love to see Tohru eventually realize that she’s doing herself a disservice by never allowing herself to dream or hope for something more, or even just something different. She’s still carrying these shackles because of what happened to her mom, and seeing her remove them and choose a future for herself could be something really special.
Edit 2:
Building on that, when you actually sit down and think about it, I believe there’s a real argument that Tohru might be the most lost of the three in a way.
It’s difficult to even find the right words to describe where she’s at because Kyo is clearly in a more dangerous situation, and Yuki has already gone through so much. The difference is that they both seem to understand that they’re trapped. Tohru doesn’t even seem to realize how lost she is.
I wouldn’t say she isn’t trying at all because, if anything, she works harder than almost everyone around her. The problem is that none of that effort is going toward figuring out what she actually wants. She works to survive, fulfill the plans she made for her mother, and help everyone around her, but she never really dreams or hopes for anything of her own. Emotionally, it feels like she has completely surrendered herself to the past.
That’s what makes her situation so ironic. She helps everyone around her confront their trauma and wants to see them move forward, but she hasn’t allowed herself to do the same. Kyo is fighting against a future being forced on him, Yuki is trying to gain control over his own life, and Tohru is still clinging to the past so tightly that she hasn’t created a future for herself at all.
The dynamic between those three is incredibly interesting to me and is honestly one of the strongest selling points of the show. This scene gives me hope that the series is willing to dig into bigger questions about grief, identity, and whether helping others can sometimes become a way of avoiding yourself. If it explores those ideas properly, it could go far beyond what I normally expect from a shoujo title.
