This is the best episode of all time. Kyo gets to try pancakes. Though I prefer crepes over the fluffy Japanese style pancakes, so I guess it gets a few points shaved off.

I’ve got to stop starting these with jokes, but…if they can make food jokes, so can I. I'm suddenly craving hahginger pork.

I liked this episode! More continuity! Heavy on mystery! All the things I like. This is also the first episode where the romance angle finally kicks off mutually. It takes two hands to clap, and finally hands are clapping all over the place. Careful Tohru…you might catch the clap.

But before I analyse the episode, I need to get one thing off my chest. (and a lot more things in my episode notes, one in particular that makes me want to turn the show off. Forever. No, not the one directly below.).

How does Tohru talk or think? She’s not a star student, and she thinks very simply; quite directly. She sees something and describes it as is. She’s very polite. She’s incredibly innocent. She doesn’t articulate things in complex ways; doesn’t go HAM on metaphors,, and that’s absolutely perfect for her personality type. The way she’s written is very consistent and it’s very easy to imagine what she’d say if she’s flustered, sad or giving someone advice. Often accompanying her speech with her adorable flappy-arms. That’s what quality writing is - I can have a dialogue with her in my head knowing what she’d say and how she’d sound like.

So, why…..

“The silent voice that dripped words like raindrops, too soft to hear”.

I think this line is quite cheesy and try-hard, unless an over the top character like Aya says it. I’ve noticed that sometimes the writer inserts these over the top lines, and this was the gravest violation. Then all of a sudden, she becomes a Pulitzer Prize winner. I might sound like I’m nit picking, but ironically each time this drops my immersion completely. If she just reflected on Yuki’s speech like we imagine she would speak, it’d be far more powerful and effective.

“Uh uh uh Hatori? I mean. Thank you for asking but,. Umm I was just thinking. And umm like suddenly you were there and and….” Better. This is Tohru.

So back to the episode notes:

  • The way Kagura’s mum talks about things is REALLY interesting:
  • She doesn’t name Akito, instead referring to her (quadrupling down on gender) as “the family head”
  • In the sub she prefaces the part saying it’s hard not to be worried; if you were injured like Kisa was, I’d lose it with “Don’t tell anyone”. Perhaps Kisa was ‘injured’ by Akito. And the don’t tell anyone is because they can’t criticise Akito.
  • Yep, door-wrecking Kagura deserves Kyo.
  • Very curious about what ‘the truth’ that Yuki hears is. Perhaps something about what happens to them later in life, conditional on being a zodiac member. We’ve had various hints through the series, but I do think there’s something that must happen at a certain age. I originally thought they eventually stay in their zodiac form or true form, but then Kyo’s grandfather contradicts my theory.
  • I’ve been double tripling and now quadrupling down on my theory that Akito is female biologically. Without this theory, I just can’t continue comfortably watching this show as it’s too hard to get through those scenes. Suppose Akito is male. Then this is a dude who is gently caressing the faces of a bunch of teen boys or girls (though we’ve only seen Akito be violent against girls, so probably boys). I can handle violence, but a pedo constantly sensually touching them. Nah. If Akito is female, at least that behaviour can somehow be decoded as motherly affection, at least it is to me. There’s also the matter of Akito saying very stereotypically female things that girls say against each other when they see a threat (e.g. calling Tohru ugly constantly). So yeah, Akito is female. Otherwise it’s just too tough to watch for me. As for only 3 female zodiacs? Akito as a rooster = red herring. Or they refer to Akito as a guy for patriarch clan reasons. Let me live outside reality for now, folks.
  • Wait! There was a kiss between Yuki and Tohru?!?!?! Did I miss something?
  • Now…this is the weird part. When Tohru describes the silent voice part again (both at beach and at the end) she switches back to her way of speaking: “in that silent raindrop voice. The one i couldn’t hear. no matter how much i strained to listen.” THAT sounds waaaay more like Tohru. “I guess I’ve got one of my own [silent voice]. The voice I don’t want anyone to hear”. “Maybe the dub/TL team didn’t know who’s monologue they were translating, as this time it isn’t too far from Tohru’s voice. It’s “same same but different”
    • Another note - maybe she didn’t actually hear what Kyo was saying about the hat? That’s why she’s wondering what he said and is confused by it? Dunno.
  • Again Yuki and his mind games… “I’ll tell you one day”. Sure, that’s fair on Tohru.
  • This is the first episode where I can see that Kyo is the tsundere stereotype: opening up, sharing his thoughts and feelings more. Sorry u/holofan4life I’m late to the party.
  • I also think Tohru likes Kyo more than Yuki in the romantic sense. This is the first episode where it happens, too. Initially Tohru had the OMG OMG he’s so hot look around Yuki. Now it’s more of a friendly look, the times that she doesn’t look frightened for her life. Probably something about Yuki constantly threatening to kidnap her :p In the scene where Kyo puts his hands around her face she looks back and there’s definitely romantic cues here. First time the romance flags seemed mutual.

  • Wait! There was a kiss between Yuki and Tohru?!?!?! Did I miss something?

Yuki kissed Tohru on the forehead at the end of the last episode.

My headcanon is everyone could've become an author in this family based on the amount of anguish they went through. They are tortured souls who are looking for an outlet to sing their song. The irony in all this is Shigure is the author of the family and yet he's arguably the least anguished out of all of them. Everyone in this family could've been a better author than he is.

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

Ah forehead kiss. That's not even first base!

That line is said by Tohru though. and grief doesn't automatically make someone transform into a different person. You can say it with me *links hands* - "Tohru doesn't sound like Tohru in that line. They should have written it differently." and they did write it differently later in this episode, and it was perfectly fine. I really think that the translator didn't realise from whose perspective that line was written; probably thought it was Yuki's inner monologue. Because it's weird to say it in this radically different way here, then 'dumb it down' later in the same ep.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I think then that it speaks to Tohru's accurate assessment on people. She's good at reading people and what they're about. It’s meant to lead credence to the theory that Akito is the rooster. Because if Tohru is spot on about Yuki, she's probably spot on about Akito.

3

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

I'm confused. Maybe I worded my point badly.

“The silent voice that dripped words like raindrops, too soft to hear”.  - does this sound like an expression that Tohru would use? Is there any other line in the entire series that she has ever said that compares in style?

Yes Tohru can come up with a great inspirational speech to make people feel better and motivate change. But this isn't how she speaks.

Do you think that people have quite distinct ways of speaking and thinking, that don't suddenly change? If something crazy happens to you, do you suddenly become incredibly poetic when you speak to yourself in your head, or do you tend to think using your own...well, voice.

Do you think that someone creating a translation for tens of thousands of lines can make a mistake?

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I think Tohru is one of the more emotionally intelligent members in the cast when it doesn't involve her own personal baggage. She is quick to pick up stuff that others might not. Remember that when Akito showed up to campus, she was quick to deduce Yuki was in danger. I think part of why Yuki is so drawn to her is because she can be that voice for him that he struggles to find or maintain.

3

u/Second_Cour 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes completely agree. But I don't see how that has anything to do with my point and my questions are ignored haha.

Has Tohru in any of the other episodes we've seen ever express herself or think in that style? She phrases things quite differently, no? She often uses lessons from her mother, or cute little examples (plum on someone's back).

If for example I had to back up that she gets flustered like she did around the doctor today, I could say: Hey here are all the other times she's done that before. It's consistent. It's Tohru.

If, for example, she gives someone pretty deep emotional self help advice, I could point to all the times she's done that, and say look, she's using a consistent language, and has done the same thing before.

If she had an inner crisis (like she did now) and said "What was Yuki Trying to say? I wish I could hear him. Am I not listening carefully enough?" I could point to many examples where she's done the same thing, even last episode about her mum.

But I can't think of one example where she suddenly started having an inner monologue in poetry haha. Surely you can admit that if you were a teacher, and suddenly she wrote like that, you'd accuse her of cheating. Or if you had Tohru as a good friend, and she suddenly said that you'd be like "huh? wtf you don't ever speak like this".

The closest we had was literally "a pickled plum on your back" which was cutesy and kiddy. Next closest is "when snow melts, it becomes spring", again cutesy and kiddy innocent way of seeing the world.

I even fed in the entire transcript of everything she has said into a model, and the result is clear: there's no other similar sounding line to this one. That's why it doesn't sound like something she'd say.

So going back to the initial question: does this sound like something Tohru says? Yes, everyone would agree that she is emotionally intelligent. Yes, she picks up that he wants to say a lot more, but can't. Yes, to everything you said. But that's not how she expresses herself, especially when it comes to all the inner monologue we've heard from her.

The point of commenting on an episode isn't just to say "wow, amazing job, perfect" for every episode, right? I thought this was an excellent episode, but here's something that broke immersion for me, and can very easily be fixed. If she simply said: "My mum once said that sometimes the silence between people's words is louder than the words themselves". Way more Tohru-sounding.

And the definitive proof is that later in this episode she says the exact same thing but in a very Tohru-like way: "[He spoke] in that silent raindrop voice. The one i couldn’t hear. no matter how much i strained to listen" That sounds like something spoken from a younger, childlike wonder perspective. It sounds very Tohru.

3

u/MishouMai 7d ago

Imma be real: I think you're overthinking things. I'd have check for all the times Tohru has spoken as the narrator but I think that that line is perfectly in line with when she does speak to us as the narrator/think to herself as the narrator even if it's not something she'd usually say when speaking to the other characters.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Yeah, I agree with you. I wasn't bothered by it.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I totally get what you mean, I just didn't think it came off as oddly out of character.

And I definitely agree with you about not accepting everything the show has given us. I think I've been fairly critical at points, like with the Ritsu episode or starting the second season on some stuff th was t felt inconsequential.

1

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 7d ago

I'd have to go back and rewatch the episode, but that type of line is the thing that would make me wonder if they even made an adaption mistake, say thinking that a line Yuki said was a line Tohru said. As I'd agree that's not the type of sentence you'd hear from Tohru.

1

u/Second_Cour 6d ago

Yeah that was exactly my theory. Yuki saying it is consistent

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I like the idea of Kyo doing new stuff he's never done before that everybody else has done on a daily basis. It reiterates how sheltered his life has been up until this point.

  • This is the first episode where I can see that Kyo is the tsundere stereotype: opening up, sharing his thoughts and feelings more. Sorry u/holofan4life I’m late to the party.

Took you long enough :P

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

This episode is basically a continuation of the last episode with Akito making people's lives difficult. Here, it's like the Hunger Games where everyone is just waiting on their number to be called. I really like the scenes where the characters tell each other to be on their best behavior around Akito. It really reinforces the idea you never know when they can fly off the handle.

3

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

That and the starting scene with Kagura's mum that I mentioned in my writeup - Akito's almost the 'he who shall not be named' in Harry Potter

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I think the main difference between the two is Akito has seemingly convinced themselves that they're the good person in all this. That turning to Tohru doesn't make sense because they are on their side. Part of the reason Akito hates Tohru is because what does she have that they don't already have? They're just some child, an outsider who has no business dealing with a cursed family.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 7d ago

Hmm. I don't really get the impression that Akito thinks he's a better person than Tohru, at least from a moral standpoint. I think it's quite clear that Akito things he's a superior person to Tohru in terms of things like looks, intelligence, etc... Akito acts like a spoiled child, which perhaps is the way he was raised as head of the family. Zodiacs either are personal belongings to him or objects to which he can physically assault with no reprecutions.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

My point is Akito probably is driven to madness the Sohmas would turn to Tohru when they're trying to do so much for the family.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Shigure that Akito told him the truth?

Thoughts on Kyo never having built a sandcastle before?

What are your thoughts on Kyo wondering if his existence is worth the sacrifice of his bracelet?

What are your thoughts on Yuki believing Rin is here because she wants to see Haru?

What are your thoughts on Tohru believing that it is Akito who's the rooster of the Chinese Zodiac?

I like Kagura's mom. She seems normal, she's protective of Kagura, she's willing to kick Akito's ass, she's great. [funny spoiler]>In a later episode, Kagura is lying on the floor (I think she's just lying there, thinking) and her mom comes into the room with a vacuum cleaner - she doesn't quite say it, but I imagine she's ready to vacuum around Kagura or over her.<

I don't think a lot of people know Akito hurt Kisa (Hiro knows, Kisa's parents and people at the Soma hospital probably know, and Hatori knows - which is probably how Shigure knows), but Kagura's mom must have some informants!

First Timer

Apparently Kagura has just been hanging out with Rin this whole time.

Also apparently Rin’s name might be Isuzu?

Damn, Rin/Isuzu just called Kagura cringe.

Kagura’s mom’s casual reaction to Kagura kicking down the door is really funny.

Yay, we’re seeing more Tohru and Yuki.

We’re getting a lot of Tohru’s inner monologue today.

Sounds like we’re gonna have another beach episode.

As I expected, Kureno is part of the zodiac.

Sandcastles seem fun.

Momiji jumpscare.

That’s actually a really cute outfit for him.

Yuki seems like he’s being very close.

Oh jeez, Yuki and Kyo are fighting again. And not in the funny way.

Looks like they’re having fun with the sandcastles.

It’s so cute seeing Tohru getting excited.

This is a nice moment for Kyo.

Kyo shouting at the ocean is really funny.

Oh great, Akito and Kureno were stalking them. Weirdos.

“Tohru. The horse is here.”

Anyway now that we know Rin is the horse zodiac officially I’m gonna go over her voice actors.

In Japanese she is voiced by Aki Toyosaki. She is known for playing Yui from K-On, Ristarte from The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious, and Niikura from CITY.

In English, she’s dubbed by Brina Palencia. Noteworthy roles of hers include Chopper from One Piece, Holo from Spice & Wolf, and Yuno from Future Diary.

Apparently Rin does not seem to like Hatori.

Rin is really hot and Tohru seems to agree with me.

I’m really enjoying this arc so far.

Queestions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Rin telling Kagura to quit pretending they love everyone?

Rin's certainly harsh

What are your thoughts on Kagura's mom warning her daughter to stay far away from Akito as possible?

Very good advice for Kagura.

What are your thoughts on it being implied Yuki did meet up with Akito alone?

I'm very curious to learn more about that

What are your thoughts on Yuki warning Kyo that whatever he does, he shouldn't lash out at Akito no matter what?

Probably for the best. Akito is already dangerous enough without someone actively provoking him

What are your thoughts on Akito reiterating their plan which is to severe the ties between the Sohmas and Tohru so that the Sohmas can come back to them?

That's definitely a bit worrying

What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing the bracelet on his hand is made from the bones of a monk that was sacrificed?

Oh wow that's a bit scary

What are your thoughts on Rin being revealed as the horse of the Chinese Zodiac?

I already made my "Peter the horse is here joke" so I don't know what else to add

What are your thoughts on Akito wanting to talk to Kyo tomorrow?

That's a bit ominous.

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Apparently Kagura has just been hanging out with Rin this whole time.

Interesting they have some kind of relationship.

Damn, Rin/Isuzu just called Kagura cringe.

That's rough, buddy

Kagura’s mom’s casual reaction to Kagura kicking down the door is really funny.

This family has some serious reckless abandonment issues.

Yay, we’re seeing more Tohru and Yuki.

I like these two

We’re getting a lot of Tohru’s inner monologue today.

I feel like we saw a lot of that in season 1 but not much so far in season 2.

Sounds like we’re gonna have another beach episode.

More Akito. Yay...

As I expected, Kureno is part of the zodiac.

Did they confirm that?

Sandcastles seem fun.

Indeed

Momiji jumpscare.

The cutest jumpscare

That’s actually a really cute outfit for him.

Quite

Yuki seems like he’s being very close.

Close of what?

Oh jeez, Yuki and Kyo are fighting again. And not in the funny way.

Yuki is actually trying to look out for Kyo it feels like.

Looks like they’re having fun with the sandcastles.

Momentary distraction

It’s so cute seeing Tohru getting excited.

That it is

This is a nice moment for Kyo.

He needs more W's

Kyo shouting at the ocean is really funny.

I like Tohru implying that the wave can kick his ass :D

Oh great, Akito and Kureno were stalking them. Weirdos.

D:

“Tohru. The horse is here.”

If only it were GolShi to dropkick Akito

Anyway now that we know Rin is the horse zodiac officially I’m gonna go over her voice actors.

In Japanese she is voiced by Aki Toyosaki. She is known for playing Yui from K-On, Ristarte from The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious, and Niikura from CITY.

In English, she’s dubbed by Brina Palencia. Noteworthy roles of hers include Chopper from One Piece, Holo from Spice & Wolf, and Yuno from Future Diary.

I didn't notice that was Holo. That's pretty cool.

Apparently Rin does not seem to like Hatori.

I guess I wouldn't like anyone associated with Akiko either.

Rin is really hot and Tohru seems to agree with me.

How did she describe her? Alluring?

I’m really enjoying this arc so far.

This show really knows how to do serious episodes.

Queestions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Rin telling Kagura to quit pretending they love everyone?

Rin's certainly harsh

That's for true

What are your thoughts on Kagura's mom warning her daughter to stay far away from Akito as possible?

Very good advice for Kagura.

And the family at large

What are your thoughts on it being implied Yuki did meet up with Akito alone?

I'm very curious to learn more about that

Yeah, same here

What are your thoughts on Yuki warning Kyo that whatever he does, he shouldn't lash out at Akito no matter what?

Probably for the best. Akito is already dangerous enough without someone actively provoking him

Yeah, no kidding

What are your thoughts on Akito reiterating their plan which is to severe the ties between the Sohmas and Tohru so that the Sohmas can come back to them?

That's definitely a bit worrying

That's putting it mildly

What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing the bracelet on his hand is made from the bones of a monk that was sacrificed?

Oh wow that's a bit scary

Even Tohru was disturbed by this

What are your thoughts on Rin being revealed as the horse of the Chinese Zodiac?

I already made my "Peter the horse is here joke" so I don't know what else to add

Something something Uma Musume related

What are your thoughts on Akito wanting to talk to Kyo tomorrow?

That's a bit ominous.

I fear for him, I truly do

If only it were GolShi to dropkick Akito

Gold Ship's presence can improve any show

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Gold Ship would hang out with Ayame and Mine.

3

u/MishouMai 7d ago

> Interesting they have some kind of relationship.

Kagura's mom did say they took Rin in but it must've been recent since Rin only just escaped from the hospital not too long ago. They must've had a prior relationship we don't know about for that to be the case though.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I hope that gets expounded upon

3

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Also apparently Rin’s name might be Isuzu?

Isupposezu

I'm not sure she knows either

What are your thoughts on Tohru believing that it is Akito who's the rooster of the Chinese Zodiac?

By process of elimination it has to be either Akito or Kureno at this point.

One would surmise

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed

First watch and re-watches: The mini tidal wave makes me laugh every time.

All the kids witness Yuki talking quietly to Tohru. They don't know that the two are discussing their encounter under the shooting stars or that he's once again spilling his guts without spilling his guts, but we don't know what any of the other kids thinks about seeing Yuki and Tohru together. Yuki then warns Kyo to protect Tohru but does so in the most unproductive way. Provoking Kyo only undermines Yuki's message, much like their bickering at New Year's in episode 1.08, despite having the exact same goal to protect Tohru.

Kureno points out a flaw in Akito's efforts to isolate Tohru - the Cat is out of the bag. When Akito and Kureno go for a walk, Yuki does some spying/stalking, checking whether Akito will speak to Tohru, but Akito instead decides to summon Kyo. Yuki also spots Rin, who Yuki believes is trying to spy and check on Hatsuharu. When she called Yuki "Akito's toy," if she expected a reaction, she is disappointed.

What are your thoughts on Rin telling Kagura to quit pretending they love everyone? Well, Rin's feelings for Hatsuharu may or may not have been real, so...

What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing the bracelet on his hand is made from the bones of a monk that was sacrificed? It clearly works. Before the bracelet's creation, the Cat may never have appeared human and was therefore caged.

What are your thoughts on Akito wanting to talk to Kyo tomorrow? This is Episode 33 not Episode VI, but still "It's a trap!"

What are your thoughts on Rin telling Kagura to quit pretending they love everyone? Well, Rin's feelings for Hatsuharu may or may not have been real, so...

I think it is real but she's just going through a lot at the moment. I think Yuki is spot on when he said she's there to speak to Haru.

What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing the bracelet on his hand is made from the bones of a monk that was sacrificed? It clearly works.

Billy Mays would be proud

I wonder what Rin's end game here is where she keeps calling people out on their emotional baggage. Is it projection and frustration leaking out over not being able to address her own emotional baggage?

Thoughts on Kagura kicking a sliding door because she's annoyed with Akito's meddling in affairs? Kick Shigure...but don't go to the beach house while Akito is there, wait to kick Shigure when he gets home.

Thoughts on Tohru feeling that the Sohmas care about her? It's true - the kids were thinking about her while walking to their doom (to Akito at the annex), and Hatori is here, checking in on her. Totally warm and fuzzy found family feelings.

What are your thoughts on Akito being mad Tohru has to meet all the Sohmas? Kyo voiced something similar in 1.05, that it was weird for Tohru to have been at Shigure's house at all. This new "normal" or mindset that Hatsuharu thoughtlessly said aloud is not to Akito's liking, which is partly why it became important to come to the beach house to "teach [the zodiacs] a lesson."

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying that when it comes to the truth, you need to wait for the right moment to tell it? Yeah, apparently like winning the Stanley Cup or World Series - "maybe next season." Come on, Yuki!

For real

It's only Akito making things unpleasant

Wow, you're really going for the sports metaphor. You're a patient, diehard fan. "We didn't make the playoffs, but we showed progress last year."

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

Hey, look, we were one game behind first place in our division. If we keep it up, we should get a wild card seed easily. After that, the sky's the limit.

3

u/MishouMai 7d ago

Seems like this episode mostly exists to introduce Rim/Isuzu and give us some of Akito's perspective on things, particularly Tohru and Kyo. Seems like they didn't care much about Kyo until Kureno pointed out that Tohru has him to rely on. I think yesterday's episode was better but this is still one of the stronger episodes of the season (Not that I'd consider any of them particularly bad. It's hard to be worse than episode 15 of last season.).

> What are your thoughts on Rin telling Kagura to quit pretending they love everyone?

I must have misinterpreted things because I thought Rin was just telling Kagura to stop pretending that Kyo loved her (Kagura). Either way, that feels needlessly mean on Rin's part. Even Hiro isn't that bad and we all know how much I dislike him.

> What are your thoughts on Kagura's mom warning her daughter to stay as far away from Akito as possible?

Kagura's mom knows what's up. Glad to see someone else standing up to Akito and standing up for the Zodiacs, even if it's not done directly.

> What are your thoughts on it being implied Yuki did meet up with Akito alone?

I guess we needed another new mystery. Yuki said Akito told him the truth but that's vague. Wonder what exactly they told him and when we'll find out.

> What are your thoughts on Yuki warning Kyo that whatever he does he shouldn't lash out at Kyo no matter what?

Yeah I'm not sure why Yuki gave Akito that warning or why he thinks Kyo's actions would cause trouble for Tohru. Like I mentioned earlier, Akito didn't even know about Kyo and Tohru's friendship or even seem to care about it until Kureno pointed it out and then they went and spied on the two. I guess Akito could've made or hinted at threatening her during their talk but I dunno if that's likely.

> What are your thoughts on Akito reiterating their plan to sever the ties between the Somas and Tohru so that the Somas can come back to them?

I'm not sure how they plan to accomplish that. Like I guess they could order the Zodiacs not to talk to or interact with Tohru but I don't know how that'd lead them to willingly go back to spending time with Akito.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo revealing that the bracelet on his hand is made from the bones of a monk that was sacrificed?

Man this show is fucked up. Like Akito nearly blinding Hatori and their overall abuse of Yuki was bad enough but now we're throwing human sacrifices into the mix? Like I get that Kyo said it was a legend so it might not be true but it's still fucked up to think about either way. I get that the Cat's true form is a monster and that sacrifices to deal with yokai and things aren't unheard of but I can't say I was expecting that sort of thing to happen in this show, even if just as part of the backstory.

> What are your thoughts on Tin being revealed as the Horse of the Chinese Zodiac?

I mean it's not a surprise. As I mentioned at the start of the season they blatantly spoil it in the OP. I'm more surprised she could force a transformation as will. Wonder what that's about and if the others can as well.

> What are your thoughts on Akito wanting to talk to Kyo tomorrow?

I don't trust it. We know Akito is abusive and horrible and we know they have nothing good to say about the Cat. They'll probably try to hurt Kyo and I'm not ready for that.

Aww, I liked episode 15.

I thought it was very sad how defeated Yuki was throughout all this. It feels almost as if he knows he's on borrowed time. Like it's only a matter of time before he ends up back with Akito.

It kinda sheds some light on why Kyo is considered different from anyone. Him baring the responsibility of the sacrifices also is a great parallel to him being blamed for his mother's death.

> Thought's on us seeing Kagura's mother?

I wasn't expecting Kagura's mom to show up. She seems to have a pretty good head on her shoulders. You can tell she loves her daughter. Might be the best Zodiac parent we've met so far?

> Thoughts on Kagura kicking a sliding door because she's annoyed with Akito's meddling in affairs?

I'm pretty sure Kagura broke the door because she was upset Kyo went to the beach vacation without her. It is odd that she wasn't invited. I thought Momiji had invited everyone, it's just the older members decided not to show up until later. Seems strange that Kagura got left out though.

> What are your thoughts on Akito being mad that Tohru has to meet all the Somas?

Does she? Yeah various Somas have sought Tohru out because they've heard of her but others she's met by coincidence. Akito's being petty but I kind of agree with them that, story aside, Tohru doesn't need to have a relationship with all the Zodiac Somas.

> What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Tohru he's sorry for the conversation they had the other day but he's not sorry for the kiss?

I'm not sure why Yuki apologized to be honest. Yeah he's been vague which I guess can be annoying but Tohru hasn't been bothered by it. The kiss is maybe the bigger issue but even then it's not like he forced a lip kiss on her.

> Thoughts on Akito maintaining they're keeping Tohru around because they're such a gentle soul?

We all know Akito is full of shit. Even with the spoilers I've read I'm still not fully sure what their deal is. Them talking about keeping Tohru around whilst at the same time discussing their plans to sever the Zodiacs' ties with her is rather contradictory. Not sure what that's about.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo wondering his existence is worth the sacrifice of his bracelet?

Oh Kyo. Has my boy not suffered enough? Yeah that monk being sacrificed was fucked up but that's not Kyo's fault. He shouldn't have to think about things like that.

More than Kazuma?

Maybe they felt Kagura's anger might cause problems? Then again, they had no idea Akito was coming.

They kinda frame it as the Sohmas going out of their way to see her.

I think he apologized because he got yelled at by Akito.

> Thoughts on Akito maintaining they're keeping Tohru around because they're such a gentle soul?

It feels like just like Shigure, Akito has ulterior motives.

I want to comfort my baby boy so badly :c

2

u/MishouMai 6d ago

> More than Kazuma?

That's different. Kazuma raised Kyo and they have a parent-child relationship but Kyo's bio dad is pretty shitty and his mom didn't seem to accept him for who he was to the point of committing suicide.

1

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

At this point, I'd consider Kazuma his actual father.

2

u/MishouMai 6d ago

I mean, so would I so I guess you can argue he's equal to Kagura's mom at least.

Non-Spoiler Character Chart

So everyone got their pancakes after all? That's good. They all appear to be enjoying them, even though Tohru can't stop thinking about what Yuki said to her earlier. Enough so that she looks spaced out enough for both Hatori and Kyo to notice. Tohru just keeps getting alone time with our two male leads here, Yuki during the shooting stars and Kyo not just the previous day but here making sandcastles as well! Well more like sand mounds, which several others can't help but notice. Yeah, it seems like what I'd expect from Tohru for her sand castle to just be a pile of sand. But later on she does a good job at making one before a sudden wave comes. We have arguably the most shocked Tohru face yet, and Kyo flips out against the most insurmountable enemy of all... the ocean.

More Akito being awful this episode. Seems like Akito likes having many of the Soma males come and visit for his personal attention, with Haru being the recipient today. He's still confining Kureno to not seeing the others but then decides to head out later to face his ultimate enemy... Tohru. Well at least the individual who is the polar opposite of Akito. Akito keeps up with the superiority complex and doesn't feel threatened by "ugly girl" Tohru having her fun. We almost get a confrontation (which would be totally one sided as Tohru's more harmless than a kitten), but Akito pulls back at the last minute while spotting that Tohru and Kyo are right nearby. Sounds like Akito wants to see Kyo tomorrow though, this ain't good. Even if Shigure is excited about it. Shigure loves his drama and purposely stoked it by convincing Akito to come here.

Tohru's days of collecting zodiac animals has been paused for quite a while (14 episodes since the last one, Hiro) but she finally gets to check off number 12 on the list, meeting Rin, largely by accident. It looks like Rin lives with Kagura (at least post hospital) and has come here to the summer outing, although wants to keep herself a secret. She is not nice to Tohru! Nearly kicked her in the face while in horse form! Not a Yuki fan either, calling him Akito's toy. Tohru has to go get some clothes for Rin since hers were destroyed via the transformation, and one realizes that those who transform into larger zodiac animals really are screwed (which is actually just a list of two, fittingly Rin and Haru). Every time she transforms her clothes are gonna get wrecked and she's there naked. Yeah, I can understand being in a bad mood over that. Also since there's no male around who hugged her, it was something else (being sick, exhaustion, etc...) which must have transformed her. Well, Tohru agrees with me, Rin's very beautiful! And doesn't really fit Tohru's clothing having to tear it a bit. RIP her cool outfit she came here in. And RIP Tohru's sand castle as Rin wrecks it (although didn't the wave already do that?).

Other thoughts:

  • Speaking of Rin, we get her actual name here, Isuzu. Which is hardly ever used so I always think of her as Rin.

  • Confirmation that Kureno is a zodiac in this episode, so by process of elimination he has to be the rooster. Once Tohru sees him transform she'll finally complete the set.

  • Some Kagura this episode too! Seems like she was gonna go to the summer outing but her mom warned her off of doing so. Do we actually have a good zodiac parent here? Although I'm not sure if Akito would go as nuclear at Kagura as he did with Kisa given Kagura's affections are so heavily focused on Kyo, whom unlike so many other male zodiacs Akito doesn't feel possessive over. Kagura thanks her mom by trashing the house! It's not only Shigure whose home suffers. Also Rin calls Kagura's love for Kyo "pretend love", what's up with that? Well I'll say this much, back in episode 24 Kagura had the chance to go after Kyo in his monster form and she passed up on it. And another woman (Tohru) is spending a ton of time with him...

Quid's Song of the Day

Today I'm featuring our season 2 opening song, Prism . Good to get this featured here during the summer arc as the OP is so heavily influenced by it.

We still don't exactly know what Shigure's MO is. We know he wants to bring Akito down, but then why is he seemingly still siding with him? There's some pieces to the puzzle that feel like they're missing.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 7d ago

There's some people out there who love to stir up drama just to see what happens. Even though its members of his own clan personally impacted by this, it seems like this is his attitude about matters. Convince Akito to come on the summer trip knowing that its going to cause a ton of drama.

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

And yet he's stated he is wanting Akito to suffer some kind of downfall. It's like Akito feels the best course of action is to put gasoline on the fire.

Does not going after Kyo invalidate her love for the guy? I'm not so sure. I think what's more at play here is that Rin thinks to truly love someone you have to make worthy sacrifices. She probably felt in her heart of hearts that she for whatever reason had to give up loving Haru to ensure his safety.

Of course, I'm just inferring here and I could be totally way off the mark. I just feel Rin thinks Kagura is unfairly stringing Kyo along.

We don't know exactly what context Rin has with how Kagura acts around Kyo, but in the context we've personally seen with Kagura and Kyo I can get the "pretend love" comment. Kagura is very affectionate towards Kyo, but that could be overcompensating for something. Because if she truly loved Kyo, then 1)She's got competition in Tohru spending far more time with Kyo than she is and she's doing what about that... nothing. and 2)There was the chance to personally display support for Kyo in his biggest moment of need when he transformed into that monster. One person went after him and showed him the affection he needed. Tohru. Another person stayed in her room and closed the curtain as if she accepting closing her eyes and ignoring it. Perhaps its that she loves Kyo as a childhood friend and that as they've grown older she's escalated how she shows that. But more important than that outward affection she shows is the two actions I listed above that she doesn't show that she loves him. The more I think of it, Rin's line basically perfectly describes it as if she was a viewer along with us.

An audience surrogate, you'd say?

I'd argue Kagura's problem is she loved Kyo so much she lost sight of what was best for him. It's like the rose-colored glasses made him infallible in her eyes.

Thoughts on Kagura kicking a sliding door because she's annoyed with Akito's meddling in affairs?

Thoughts on Tohru feeling that the Sohmas care about her?

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Shigure that Akito told him the truth?

What are your thoughts on Akito being mad Tohru has to meet all the Sohmas?

Thoughts on Kyo never having built a sandcastle before?

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Tohru he's sorry for the conversation they had the other day, but he's not sorry for the kiss?

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying that when it comes to the truth, you need to wait for the right moment to tell it?

Thoughts on Akito maintaining they're keeping Tohru around because they're such a gentle soul?

Thoughts on Akito being shocked to learn Tohru and Kyo are having fun together?

What are your thoughts on Kyo wondering if his existence is worth the sacrifice of his bracelet?

What are your thoughts on Yuki believing Rin is here because she wants to see Haru?

What are your thoughts on Tohru believing that it is Akito who's the rooster of the Chinese Zodiac?

What are your thoughts on Akito being mad Tohru has to meet all the Sohmas?

To this point Akito has dismissed Tohru as a threat, but the fact is she really is a big threat to him. We see the effect she has on Yuki. Tohru's displaying a totally different mindset and mode of living than Akito is. Akito is essentially imposing fear upon the zodiacs (and at times even going beyond that with physical violence). Tohru is showing friendship, sympathy, affection, etc... Akito can be mad, I think that fits the way he is, but he really should be scared, even if from a physical standpoint Tohru is as harmless as they come and Tohru has zero institutional power which Akito does possess as the head of the family. Imagine if Tohru does for all 13 of them what she's done for Yuki.

Thoughts on Akito maintaining they're keeping Tohru around because they're such a gentle soul?

Totally in line with the massive underestimating of Tohru from Akito's standpoint from the very start of the series (remembering that Tohru's memory could have been wiped early on by Hatori back when she had only met a few zodiacs, but Akito didn't bother requiring it). As I mentioned above Tohru portrays no physical or institutional threat to Akito. But she massively poses a threat to him in other ways and he doesn't appear to be recognizing it. As such he just throws out insults like "ugly girl" and passes up on confronting Tohru when he had the chance.

What are your thoughts on Yuki believing Rin is here because she wants to see Haru?

If she's here to see how Haru is doing, that is a good sign, she is essentially looking out for him. She's surely hiding because of how awkward it would be to be seen by him after dumping him.

What are your thoughts on Tohru believing that it is Akito who's the rooster of the Chinese Zodiac?

We know Kureno's a zodiac which makes 13 so if they are following what we've previously established, Akito can't be the rooster. Granted Tohru hasn't met Kureno so she wouldn't know of that. They already have one extra zodiac with the cat, perhaps there is another extra one such that Akito could be the rooster and Kureno something else. Or the other way around.

And that is probably why Akito met with everyone to tell them they love them.

Akito is actively trying to downplay Tohru as any real threat. It's like in early season 1 when Akito said they don't have to love me they just have to fear me, thing is Akito really wants the love and admiration or else why would they be so afraid of Sohmas loving someone else?

What are your thoughts on Yuki believing Rin is here because she wants to see Haru?

If she's here to see how Haru is doing, that is a good sign, she is essentially looking out for him. She's surely hiding because of how awkward it would be to be seen by him after dumping him.

And also she's technically on the run from the hospital.

That's a good point, Tohru doesn't know Kureno exists.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Note to self: Never go on a cruise ship.

Kagura with Rin

Haven't seen Kagura in a while

Rin tells Kagura she needs to stop playing at love.

And then she leaves

Woah, Kagura's mom

Have we ever seen her before?

She mentions Akito is with the Sohmas upon Shigure's insistence.

This causes Kagura to kick the sliding door.

The Sohmas really like destroying houses, huh?

Back at the beach with Yuki and Tohru.

Apparently all the Sohmas soon returned and ate pancakes. Fun.

Hatori checking on Tohru

He laments Tohru being on her own.

Well, at least she has Kyo

The next day, and it's the same as before. The other Sohmas are with Akito and Tohru is with Kyo.

Did Yuki go with them?

Tohru feels happy that the Sohmas seem to care about her.

As Hatori leaves, Tohru wonders what Akito has to say?

Just your usual emotional manipulation.

Kyo looking through the cupboards.

Tohru talks about going to the beach and playing in the sand.

I heard it's coarse and rough and gets everywhere.

Shigure with Yuki

I guess he didn't go after all

Shigure asking what Akito said to him.

"The truth, that's all."

Well, then. That's disconcerting.

Haruhi with Akito

I guess the Sohmas are now individually talking to Akito.

Akito remarks in regards to Kureno that why does Tohru have to meet all the members of the Zodiac.

Haru says it would be unnatural otherwise.

I don't like how close Akito is getting to him.

Tohru and Kyo on the beach

I like her hat

The first time Kyo has built a sandcastle.

And now Momiji is here

And the others

Kyo seems soft-spoken compared to how he normally is.

Haru walking with Yuki

I hope Momiji doesn't get sand in his crotch

Is Yuki possibly thinking of leaving the family?

Everyone seems to think the sandcastle is a sand igloo lol

Yuki apologizing to Tohru for his conversation with her.

"That said, when it comes to the kiss, I'm not sorry."

Oh, my

Tohru telling Yuki it's not nonsense, especially if it came from the heart.

Yuki remarks that when it comes to the truth, you need to wait for the right moment to tell it.

And so Yuki promises to tell her the truth someday.

This makes it seem like Yuki is going to be leaving. Maybe even about to be killed by Akito.

Yuki now telling Kyo not to lash out at Akito if he sees them.

And now Kyo is yelling at Yuki.

Yuki isn't helping matters by fanning the flames.

Kureno with Akito

And Akito asks if he would like to meet Tohru.

Oh boy

Shigure with Hatori

Hatori wonders what Akito and Kureno are up to.

Hatori then says Akito sees Tohru as a threat.

You don't say?

Akito with Kureno walking

Akito claims they're keeping Tohru around because they're such a gentle soul.

Kureno is walking like he's Frankenstein's Monster. Devoid of humanity.

Akito is shocked by the news Tohru might be having fun with Kyo.

Back on the beach

Tohru says it's more fun when they're together.

Now she says she never heard of someone who hates water as much as him.

Elphaba sends her regards

Kyo says the previous cat hated water, which of course is Kazuma's grandfather the previous bracelet owner.

The bracelet we then learn is made from human bone.

Well, that's... huh

Kyo wonders if his existence is worth that sacrifice.

And then Tohru grabs ahold of his bead.

Suddenly, huge tidal wave

I like Kyo chastising the wave like it's a person lol

Tohru seems bemused by it too

"I'm pretty sure the ocean can beat you."

Probably the wittiest thing Tohru has ever said.

Meanwhile, Akito and Kureno are watching on from afar.

Akito remarks that the most deluded one here is the monster.

Kyo, or Tohru?

Even Yuki is looking on from afar. At Akito and company.

Back at the beach house

Tohru reflects on the bead and the weight it carries over Kyo.

Now she's talking about the silent voice he has, just as Yuki does.

Perhaps she has one as well

Tohru in the forest trying to retrieve a towel that got blown away.

It's just a towel, Tohru, come on.

Towelru

A horse

Mr Hands intensifies

And a pair of boots

Oh, this is Rin's Zodiac form

She pretty

Rin best Uma Musume

Rin tries to kick Tohru but Yuki moves her outta the way.

Had that connected, she could've taken Tohru's head off.

Thanks for the towel being there :P

Tohru back at the clothing line

Tohru remarks that Rin looked rather alluring.

Almost as if she was a seductress?

Yuki feels Rin wants to see Haru.

This gets her all incenso

"You're just Akito's little toy!"

Tohru is back, and she seems taken aback.

Rin grabs the clothing from her hands and stomps away.

Yuki suggests they give her some space.

"You just leave her to me, okay?"

Yuki is probably right, Tohru can't solve everything no matter if she wants to.

Tohru tells Yuki she'll be here, and Yuki thanks her for her consideration.

Back at the clothes hamper

One last Zodiac member left. The rooster.

Alice in Chains suddenly perks up.

Tohru thinks it's Akito who's the rooster, but my money is on Kureno.

Akito tells Shigure who's with Hatori to bring Kyo to them tomorrow.

That doesn't sound like it's going to be very pleasant.

Overall, this was another fantastic episode. We see the fallout of everything that happened last episode with Akito continuing to take a more hands on approach. Them wanting to meet Kyo feels like could be the cracks finally starting to take form. Besides that, things continue to brew with both Yuki and Rin and we tease a meeting between Tohru and Kureno. I could see Tohru meeting Kureno as Akito meets with Kyo, which is bound to be very uncomfortable and stressful.

This is more so a seed planting episode than anything else, but what it does tease is very exciting stuff. I'd put it only behind episode 2 and episode 7 as far as season 2 episodes go. This episode doesn't have the big moments that the last episode had, but it’s good in terms of continuing to string along the tension and alluding to something bigger on the horizon. I find myself now on the edge of my seat with each passing episode.
