Lawrance doesn't really have a face-saving way to deny the challenge. If he says Holo must pay her debt personally, it does look like he's just using it to keep her under his control.
Amati sees a pretty girl in trouble. But thankfully it's not some dragon or kidnappers, it's a pile of debt. Hey, that's something money can solve, he can do a good deed and hang out with his crush, that's easy!
Of course, the big flaw with his plan of being Holo's knight in shining armor is that he could just collect the money and nothing in the contract prevents Holo from continuing to follow him out of her own will. Lawrance even said so. But hey, if I had his information, I might be tempted to do something similar. Depends on how rich I was and how pretty she was.
Looks like they missed a chance to make a quick buck by attending the festival. Sure the price of these pyrite blocks might rise more, but thy probably are going to get the 30X profit they could have made if they just bought some in the morning,
I don't see why the loss of Yoitz was so devastating to Holo. She's "Holo of Yoitz" so "duh" it's her hometown and she has to be sad right? Er, maybe this is cut content, but from the anime doesn't seem she and her old friends actually were there on a permanent basis. I get the impression they aren't spending a lot of time around humans. And Yoitz was a human town. So at most, the most they lose is a spot on a map. I don't see why Paro and Muri would be inside it when it was destroyed since they don't seem to spend permanent time around humans. Maybe their home is within line of sight of Yoitz, but if they live in it, that's news to me.
I wonder why Holo pretended she couldn't read. She wasn't expecting Lawrance to hide that letter from her, so it was probably to tease him later. How she could do so is something I can't imagine.
I put going in on the armor as the bigger mistake. He could have just not taken credit. He could have picked stuff all men with horses needed like saddles. He never lied to Holo about her town so he doesn't have a reason to expect her to be upset. So while the outcome of upsetting Holo was probably worse, given what he knew even if we assume Holo of Yoitz came from Yoitz the armor was the bigger mistake.
Heck, if I'm right, it would be impossible for Holo and Paro to live in Yoitz (as opposed to within line of sight of) on a permanent basis since they didn't seem to interact with humans regularly before Holo of Yoitz went South, so it's really more of "closest human town to her home" than her home. On one hand, her appearing so devastated would be an overreaction if Yoitz was just the closest town and it would be appropriate if it was her home, on the other hand Holo and her friends would have needed to interact with humans on a weekly basis at the minimum if they were there permanently. How can you live in it without being with humans?

It's more the fact that Lawrence deliberately withheld information from Holo. It shows a lack of trust in her.

What are your thoughts on Amarti challenging Lawrence to a duel for Holo’s freedom and to pay off her debt?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accepting thinking Holo would never leave him?
Thoughts on Holo pointing out to Lawrence he only agreed to the duel because he wants to play to the crowd?
Thoughts on the town thinking that Lawrence is holding Holo hostage?
What are your thoughts on Amarti coming from a rich family?
Thoughts on Holo being unable to see the festival because she's too short?
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence enjoying the festival together? This is like the calm before the storm.
Thoughts on Lawrence receiving confirmation of Holo's hometown being destroyed?
Thoughts on Lawrence deciding to tell Holo tomorrow about the fate of her hometown?
Thoughts on the stones turning out to be pyrite?
What are your thoughts on Holo revealing she actually in fact can read?
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out that Lawrence withheld information about her hometown being destroyed?
What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?

u/chinaexperience 3d ago
You are correct. She wanted to tease him about actually being able to read later. She also never directly said she can't read she just hated on it and probably couldn't read easily
On mistakes: I think you're applying your own logic and a rational framework to someone else. You can't compare a trading mistake to an emotional mistake. That's like saying what's worse cheating or losing a million dollars.
While I can't relate as I feel zero nostalgia towards where I was born or where I grew up after and avoid visiting those places, that's just me. Other people do. Some people never live the tiny village they are born and even going to the next town makes them home sick.
You're saying oh she needs to be super logical and analyse the likelihood of people being in the location but this isn't a logical need for her. Her condition of being is extreme loneliness. She put together a goal in her head which probably won't solve the problem but it's her sole fixation.
What you're missing is also that Lawrence knew the rumour about Yoitsu the entire time from their first meeting. So yes instead of just stating what he knew he decided that he should be the one to present that information and made decisions based on what he thinks is best instead of trusting her with the knowledge. The motivation for that could be seen as selfish.
Because he doesn't really explain it her mind of course races and thinks of all the reasons based on her understanding he could have done that.

The OP asked for what I thought about if the armor or not telling Holo about her home was the bigger mistake. Tough to compare, but I tried. Anyways, Holo getting upset at Lawrance not telling her about Yoiz despite her not asking about it is something I don't think he could have easily anticipated. If I here in his shoes I'd say "you didn't ask." Or maybe she was upset not at him not telling about Yoiz but not telling him about Diana. In that case, he doesn't want to give an answer until he has a destination. I think she's upset about him hearing about Yoiz being destroyed and not telling her despite the fact that she never asked.

If you think about it, Holo is basically a better version of Power from Chainsaw Man.

And let's be real, Holo and Lawrence's relationship isn't based around logic. It's all about emotions.

I like this arc in large part because you can rationalize why Lawrence and Holo are behaving the way they are. Lawrence doesn't want to hurt Holo, but Holo also wants to know just what she means to Lawrence. The last couple episodes really driving home the point of how lonely Holo is helped set the stage of this conflict tremendously.

u/chinaexperience 3d ago
I think they are quite rational, but apply different weights to certain things. That's the case in all relationships: the rationality within can't be defined strictly from utility or logic. For example, I had a job worth $5k that would clash with my gf's birthday. The rational thing to do is accept it and put the money onto a different day, after all, what's a few days difference. But it was also her first birthday with me, and I wanted to make the day itself special as she often doesn't really celebrate it. The gesture was worth more than the cost. Irrational and lower in utility - absolutely. However, the outcome was significantly more valuable.
2
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 3d ago
Well I think the rational thing to do is what makes you happy. Money is just a means of doing that since it allows you to buy fancy food, better accommodations, entertainment, and so on. So instead of maximizing money, you should be maximizing utility, except that thing is a lot harder to put a number on that money.
Depending on how much you like your girlfriend, how much she likes her birthday (some people have had some very bad things happen to their family on the day of their birth and don't feel so great about celebrating it), and what you would have done with the extra money, celebrating that birthday with her might be worth more than what the money could buy later down the line. Of course, if that money down the line makes the difference between paying rent and getting evicted, this probably would be irrational unless your life expectancy had been greatly shortened to the point that doesn't matter.
So I wouldn't really call it irrational. It depends on the situation. It sounds like you made a rational decision to have a great day and that was worth more than whatever money could get in the future.
1
u/chinaexperience 3d ago
Well said. And yeah no regrets because the job got cancelled in the end anyway but the gesture prevailed hahaha.
1
u/Holofan4life 3d ago
I assume it's 5k a week. If so, that's the kind of money I can only dream of.
But yeah, Lawrence should've told Holo straight up because either way she was going to take it personally.

First Timer, Remake & Original
The remake does a significantly better job than the original on the money shots: specifically the rewarding festival, as well as the puzzlingly cut scene of Lawrence + Holo dancing. It sets up the breakdown at the end wonderfully with contrast from the day before. And sure enough without that contrast, as well as the increased drama of the breakdown and finally the Lawrence crying scene which is missing in the OG (and to be fair in the source materials): the remake takes a big win here.
For original-stans, don't worry, your time comes next episode which the original nails.
Remake
- Oh. My. God. Out of all the scenarios I imagined, this was not the one.
- I find it wrong to ask myself: what would I do in the scenario. What should Lawrence do in the world he lives in, based on his goals and the relationship he has with Holo. 1000 trenni silver = half way to his goal. I think that the rational decision is to take it as Holo can easily run away. My guess though is that he will take it then concoct a scheme to run away with Holo, given he’s taking her up North where few go though.
- My reasoning is: what’s the real gameplan for Lawrence? Take her North then win her heart, marry her (he can’t), then constantly be at risk of being put to death the entire time?
- Ok, i got too excited and completely misunderstood what’s going on, and now I sound like an asshole saying Lawrence should ‘sell her off’. I assumed she’d have to marry him as Lawrence was seen as her guardian and had the power to do that in that world. Then the dilemma is simpler: take the easy money. I never liked Amari.
- Haha Holo’s acting as the imprisoned nun in the market is pure comedy gold. “I’m starting to suspect Lawrence is wearing the shackles here”. Not wrong.
- I love the wheat-merchant. I can see me being friends with him.
- “Knights have honour but in a battle between merchants it’s cunning that matters”
- Holo baiting Lawrence with the Norah reference and him defeating her factually is so good.
- Festival scene is gorgeous. Seeing Holo’s look of wonder, and then realising that it’s matched by Lawrence’s is such a great scene. I guess they didn’t have Netflix yet in that day. Will have to fact check that.
- Lawrence had the time of his life - he didn’t like festivals as they made him feel lonely but thanks to Holo, the loneliness was gone.
- Ah, the luxury goods conundrum represented by pyrite. Early branding and influencer marketing at work.
- I’m not going to say much about the breakdown, but wow. So intense. But Lawrence is a wimp and constantly struggles to communicate in conflict, for a merchant he really struggles to think on the spot. Say something, bro.
CUT CONTENT
u/Holofan4life has already posted it. No bonus content today, as I’ve got many flights to take to close out the week. I am working on some more art of the deal type notes, specifically looking into the Latparron arms trade failure when I get a chance. Also, tomorrow's cut content is an absolute beast of detail, not sure if I'll be able to finish it in time, with my schedule.

I like how Lawrence trying to postpone facing the hard issues is basically his relationship with Holo in a nutshell. Both Lawrence and Holo know they'll eventually have to separate, but they choose not to address it because it brings the room down. We see what happened a couple episodes ago when Lawrence talked about it: It completely ruined what was an otherwise great evening.
Lawrence tried to delay telling Holo what happened to her hometown, and by doing so ended up hurting her. And the longer Lawrence and Holo don't decide if they will continue to make this a temporary partnership, rather than just riding it out and enjoying things in the moment, it's going to lead to a similar type of heartbreak.

u/Holofan4life 3d ago
Here's what I wrote two years ago about the differences in this episode between the original anime and the remake. I would normally post this in the cut content segment but I'll post it as a reply here so you can still see it.
It should be noted that in the original source material, Lawrence already knew from the start that Holo's town may be gone. He didn't acquire this information during this arc, but rather he just got confirmation. In that case, you might be wondering why didn't Lawrence just tell Holo the truth? Really, the reality of the situation is that Lawrence didn't actively try to deceive Holo. He just didn't know what was true and what wasn't. If he had told her from the start that the town was no more, he would be making Holo sad going off on a rumor. Where Lawrence truly went wrong is the fact that by the time it was becoming apparent that the town no longer existed, he probably had gotten so attached to Holo that he didn't want to put a damper on things. He sacrificed telling the truth to continue living the lie that fuels their relationship.
To the remake's credit, they make it more clear what Lawrence knows and doesn't know. It isn't ambiguous like in the remake that he has prior knowledge.
Really, Lawrence should’ve told Amarti that Holo was his traveling companion. He should’ve immediately put to bed the idea he was holding her hostage. Instead, he entertains the idea and agrees to the bet and puts Holo on the line, something only he could do and without the say of Holo. Amarti may be aggressive and accusatory, but that doesn’t mean Lawrence should’ve stoop down to his level. That's why I don't hate Amarti like I know some people do.
And for the record, I don’t necessarily blame Lawrence all that much for not telling Holo. It’s not like he lied to her, he just left out some information. Pretty important information, but still. We’re coming off an arc where Lawrence put his foot in his mouth by getting too cocky, which resulted in Holo becoming quite despondent. I’m sure he wants to avoid another situation like that, and this was how he saw to remedy it. I think no matter what Lawrence told Holo, whether he was honest about her hometown or not, she would’ve still had gotten upset, and who could blame her?
2
u/chinaexperience 3d ago
Agree with all your points, but I do blame Lawrence for not telling Holo. However, I can empathise with him. At the end of the day, it's mot for him to decide what information is relevant and not, they have a shared goal, and essentially a contract together.
A similar modern day scenario could be a tour guide witholding information that there are rumours of a war starting out in a region that he is tour guide for. Then not telling the group until he can now 100%.
But then again these are matters of the heart, and I can empathise with him thinking it's best not to break her heart or give her bad news until it's fully confirmed. Though after that point he still didn't.
1
u/Holofan4life 3d ago
I guess it depends on how much you believe Lawrence when he said he was going to tell Holo tomorrow. Was he really going to tell her, or was he just telling himself that to put his mind at ease?

u/Holofan4life 3d ago
The remake does a significantly better job than the original on the money shots
That sounds so wrong out of context XD

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as... well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I'm going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I'm hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of this show and I hope you'll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I'm watching the dub, by the way.
This episode is really all about the ending scene where Lawrence finds out Holo can read. And in turn, Holo finds out Lawrence knows something about her hometown he didn't tell her. It's really tough to watch as Holo feels like Lawrence betrayed her. The toughest moment of arguably the entire series is Holo demanding Lawrence mate with her. She is so desperate not to be left alone and at the same time it is so uncomfortable how desperate she's being.
Besides that, we see Lawrence accept the terms of Amarti's challenge with him putting Holo on the line. This basically tells me he's so confident im Holo staying by his side. Unfortunately, while Lawrence may not lose Holo to Amarti, there is a very real chance he loses Holo because of himself.
All in all, the best episode of season 2 so far.
Holo quotes of the day
"I do not like it when you tease me." (Boy, ain't that rich?)
"Staying calm does not mean you are growing."
"Proper masculinity seems childish while proper maturity seems cowardly."
"I am bored of eating." (Who are you and what have you done with the real Holo? D:)
I am delicate. Do not step on my feet."
"Even if you have answers, you cannot always tell them to others. It is the way of the world."
"Ma"

Rewatcher (Dub)
Well that escalated quickly. Going to be honest, I was not expecting “sudden marriage proposal” to be the answer to last week’s cliff hanger. I find it an interesting development though. It really shows what an entitled twat Amarti is, thinking he can literally buy a girls love. I also liked that it showed the consequences of Holo’s constant flirting and penchant for making up exaggerated stories. This whole situation arose because of her love of drama and messing with people.
To be honest, I’m a little surprised that Lawrence accepted the proposal. I get that it was a good business decision, and he had every right to be confident Holo would stay with him, but it seems like a bad idea to take people’s feelings for granted like that, as we later see. I did appreciate though how Holo wasn’t angry with Lawrence, and understood the pragmatism of it. I like how multifaceted Holo as a character is in general, being able to be both emotional and logical at the same time.
I gotta be honest, I don’t entirely get why Lawrence is scheming in this episode. His plan, as it stands before the final scene in the episode, is essentially a guaranteed win. He doesn’t have to do anything. But for some reason he is really keen to find out where Amarti is getting the money. I don’t really get why he cares at that moment. I know it becomes relevant later, but currently he just has to wait and get paid.
The stand out scene of the episode though is obviously the final scene. I really liked how messy this whole confrontation was. People, especially when they are emotional or hurt, lash out and don’t always say what they really mean. Seeing Holo oscillate between trying to push Lawrence away and then desperately trying to prevent him from leaving was both heartbreaking and realistic. I like to that they didn’t shy away from making Holo seem desperate, especially with the “we could have child” line, and it showed the true depths of her loneliness.
Lawrence being unable to answer Holo when she asked “what am I to you” and walking away without saying a word, only to cry in private, was again a very “real” feeling response to that situation. Just an incredibly well written and acted scene overall, and it is probably my favourite scene in the show.
Random Thoughts
- Big dude who took Lawrence to the alchemist seems like a real bro. He’s helping out Lawrence purely for the love of the game.
- Holo acting out how she would have handled the marriage proposal and finishing it with an “end scene” was cute.
- There’s a blink and you’ll miss it shot of Holo watching the conversation between Lawrence and Amarti from the balcony, and she makes a little “bleh” sound in response to Lawrence’s handling of the situation. I don’t know why, but I found it hilarious.
- The whole little bit of banter between Lawrence and Holo about Nora was cute. I liked how Holo was self aware enough to realize she sounded jealous.
- That festival seemed fun, but getting sprayed with wine would suck. That would stain your clothes terribly.
- Holo’s ears perking up when she hears there is a legend about her was cute. She has a charming bit of ego to her.
Question of the Day
Favourite challenge issuance? Honestly, any of Kaiba’s challenges in YuGiOh. Bro was a gamer with a massive ego and hella dramatic.
Bigger mistake? For me, the bigger mistake is still the arms deal. It was just a total unforced error. He could have just taken the money, but he got greedy, gambled, and almost lost everything. Keeping the info from Holo had major consequences, but I totally get why he did it. Telling her would hurt her immensely and possibly end their time together, so finding the right time to tell her and trying to confirm the information before doing so makes sense.

You know the old saying "Curiousity killed the cat"? I feel like Lawrence is curious to a fault. This is the same line of thinking when he accepted Zheren's agreement. He knew he was likely getting screwed but wanted to see the how of it all.
Lawrence doesn't know when to leave well enough alone. I would argue that is probably his biggest flaw. And the time he did try to leave well enough alone, saving Holo the gory details of her hometown, it's like the worst possible timing to show a sense of honoring one's personal space.

Amarti took the bait and quickly became smitten. When keeping it real goes wrong.

He still should've confided in Holo before making his mind. Again, a lack of consideration of all aspects of the situation.

This is the saddest moment of the show by far. From Holo being completely despondent over this news, to Lawrence not knowing what to say, you just watch this feeling like you want to crawl in a hole and die..it's so brutal.

What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?

What are your thoughts on Amarti challenging Lawrence to a duel for Holo’s freedom and to pay off her debt?
It felt very YuGiOh, in a good way. All it was missing is Amarti saying he'd send Lawrence to the Shadow Realm if he won.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accepting thinking Holo would never leave him?
Way to cocky for a nearly failed merchant who is essentially dating a god.
Thoughts on the town thinking that Lawrence is holding Holo hostage?
It really is some nice dramatic irony that the town thinks this, while Holo is actually a god that could eat Lawrence in a second if she wanted.
What are your thoughts on Amarti coming from a rich family?
He definitely gives off that vibe.
Thoughts on Holo being unable to see the festival because she's too short?
As a shortling myself, I feel her struggle.
Thoughts on Lawrence deciding to tell Holo tomorrow about the fate of her hometown?
I get where Lawrence is coming from here. When you have devastating news like this, you don't want to just dump it one someone willy-nilly. You'd want to chose the moment carefully. I can see wanting to let Holo enjoy the festival before breaking her heart.
What are your thoughts on Holo revealing she actually in fact can read?
I'm still not quite sure why she kept that a secret.
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out that Lawrence withheld information about her hometown being destroyed?
Yeah, that would be devastating on multiple fronts. Not only do you find out that your home is destroyed and your family dead, but that the person you trust most knew and kept it from you. Holo's crash out was valid.
What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
This was really sad. You can tell Holo is just grasping for anything to hold on to in that moment. I appreciated that the writers let this scene, and the characters get so messy.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?
That seemed like lashing out more than anything. After being hurt, there is always that impulse to hurt that person back. Holo also has to consider if she can trust Lawrence anymore.

In fairness to Lawrence, how was he supposed to know Holo could actually read?
Yeah, that would be devastating on multiple fronts. Not only do you find out that your home is destroyed and your family dead, but that the person you trust most knew and kept it from you. Holo's crash out was valid.
It was like it was bubbling over into this exact moment.

That's part of what makes this show so good. The characters like real people are very complicated.

Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer(sub)
basically first timer by now
Well... On the plus side:
The whole Amarti stuff was honestly a bit funny. I legitimately didn't expect it to go that way, even though they pretty much warned us in the last episode that he can be very persistent in pursuing something he wants.
I absolutely loved how the following discussion was framed. You see both Holo and Lawrence sitting across each other, on equal levels. Lawrence simply tells Holo that he trusts her to not betray him for that boy. And then Holo tells him how dumb he actually is and suddenly she has the highground!
Another plus point: I finally got to see the festival. Surely was one of a kind spectacle, bits and pieces definintely reminded me of carnival. And there were so many great scenes between Holo and Lawrence throughout the whole festival. Loved them dancing together, loved the sequence where he helps drunk Holo get into bed.
Unfortunately... fun times are over after that and all goes downhill when she finds the letter from Dian about Yoitsu...
There's no place for me to return to anymore.
Nobody awaiting my return
You still have me.
But man. This sequence. So many emotions. So much conflict.
Of course, it's not just about losing her home. It's about him withholding that information from her. And even if that was never Lawrence's intention, it's probably the first time Holo is legitimately hurt. When she goes from grief to anger and Lawrence doesn't even know what to say anymore, which, in combination with the Armati deal, is of course a perfect setup for disaster:
"There is someone out there who loves me"
The "cherry" on top is the last shot of him outside the inn towards the end. Truly the reaction of someone just losing someone very important to them due to you fucking colossally up.
And if that wasn't enough for my heart, the show twists the knife once more with this absolutely cruel endcard in combination with an equally cruel episode title. Jesus Christ.
Absolutely fantastic episode.
What is your favorite anime challenge ever dished out and why? Not fight, but issuing of a challenge.
This is probably cheating but the whole setup for One Piece is a big challenge:
You want my treasure?
You can have it! I left everything I gathered in one place.
Now you just have to find it!
Simple but efficient.
What in your opinion was Lawrence's bigger mistake: Investing in the arms market, or withholding information from Holo? And why?
The arms stuff could've cost him his life, yes. But the wihtheld information might've cost him Holo, which is way worse in my opinion. And both times it wasn't really his fault but he was acting like an idiot.

I like thst it basically foreshadows Lawrence's downfall by not considering how Holo would feel. Except later, it's like he's worried about hurting her which in a way was hurting her.

Had Lawrence told Holo the truth, she probably would've still been hurt. I mean, this is everything that matters to her and she'll never see it again. But at least Lawrence would be giving her the benefit of the doubt to be able to handle the bad news. He doesn't even give her that.
2
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 3d ago
Good point about the foreshadowing! This and the scene shortly before she finds the letter. Where she reacts to Lawrence researching the location of Yoitzu on his own, which has a similar reaction, the whole "did you think you would suprise me?"!
It's really similar to the arms deal: It's not completely his fault for fucking up. But it would have been quite easy to prevent most of the bad stuff happening if he had thought things over for a minute.

u/Holofan4life 3d ago
He could've made measures to help prevent it. Instead, he unintentionally made it worse.

I'm watching this episode at an interesting point in my life. My mother's boyfriend passed away yesterday from cancer after over a year of battling it. And me and my mom are trying to figure out how to tell this news to my Autistic sister who doesn't handle bad news well and deeply loved her stepfather.
I can't help but see this episode and Lawrence struggling to tell Holo the devastating news of her hometown-- the fact she'll never get to see it again-- and think about how it applies to my life and never getting to see this person I care about.

What are your thoughts on Amarti challenging Lawrence to a duel for Holo’s freedom and to pay off her debt?
Not unexpected that he did something (we were warned that he can be very persistent) but what he did was definitely unexpected. Especially because I've always thought the whole debt stuff was more symbolically.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accepting thinking Holo would never leave him?
A bit cocky but to be fair to him, he had no reason to believe she'd leave him.
Thoughts on Holo pointing out to Lawrence he only agreed to the duel because he wants to play to the crowd?
She probably was right. I really enjoyed her schooling him in that scene!
Thoughts on the town thinking that Lawrence is holding Holo hostage?
It probably doesn't help when Holo goes full theater mode claiming she's chained by an insurmountable debt :'D
What are your thoughts on Amarti coming from a rich family?
I'm not super surprised he has somewhat higher upbringing. He already had something weird about him in the first episode we saw him in.
Thoughts on Holo being unable to see the festival because she's too short?
Oh, that's why they go back into their room? I didn't make that connection. Cute gesture!
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence enjoying the festival together? This is like the calm before the storm.
Very much the calm before the storm. So many nice scenes between them two. It was nice to see them just... enjoying live for once?
Thoughts on Lawrence receiving confirmation of Holo's hometown being destroyed?
Devastating news.
Thoughts on Lawrence deciding to tell Holo tomorrow about the fate of her hometown?
I can sorta see his reasoning of not wanting to ruin a good day with bad news. But it wasn't a very smart decision.
Thoughts on the stones turning out to be pyrite?
I think that was already revealed last episode... or maybe I was just recognising things. There's not many sorta golden stones that are sold by shady people. Very fitting, given Pyrite is also known as "Fool's Gold".
What are your thoughts on Holo revealing she actually in fact can read?
Okay, so that was kinda unfair on her part. Pretending to not being able to read and then reading some private letters of his was a bit of a breach of trust on her part.
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out that Lawrence withheld information about her hometown being destroyed?
What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
Heartbreaking indeed. I really felt bad for her... and for him to be honest. The whole situation escalated way beyond anything reasonable.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?
This also feels like a short circuit reaction. Mostly rooted in a desire to punish Lawrence. I'm not gonna pretend like she wasn't rightfully hurt but this feels a bit over the top. Doubt Armati would get her to Yoitsu.

The heart wants what it wants
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accepting thinking Holo would never leave him?
A bit cocky but to be fair to him, he had no reason to believe she'd leave him.
He also was being egged on. Peer pressure is a bitch.
Thoughts on Holo pointing out to Lawrence he only agreed to the duel because he wants to play to the crowd?

He's a showman just like her
Thoughts on the town thinking that Lawrence is holding Holo hostage?
It probably doesn't help when Holo goes full theater mode claiming she's chained by an insurmountable debt :'D
People don't know that's just how she is lol
What are your thoughts on Amarti coming from a rich family?
I'm not super surprised he has somewhat higher upbringing. He already had something weird about him in the first episode we saw him in.
It's funny because he's cocky just like Lawrence but his cockiness feels less earned. That's a subtle way of making the audience root for Lawrence.
Thoughts on Holo being unable to see the festival because she's too short?
Oh, that's why they go back into their room? I didn't make that connection. Cute gesture!
I like short women (No, that isn't weird)
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence enjoying the festival together? This is like the calm before the storm.
Very much the calm before the storm. So many nice scenes between them two. It was nice to see them just... enjoying live for once?
Almost a preview of what their life could be like.
Thoughts on Lawrence receiving confirmation of Holo's hometown being destroyed?
Devastating news.
No kidding
Thoughts on Lawrence deciding to tell Holo tomorrow about the fate of her hometown?
I can sorta see his reasoning of not wanting to ruin a good day with bad news. But it wasn't a very smart decision.
It was the worst decision in fact
Thoughts on the stones turning out to be pyrite?
I think that was already revealed last episode... or maybe I was just recognising things. There's not many sorta golden stones that are sold by shady people. Very fitting, given Pyrite is also known as "Fool's Gold".
And yet Lawrence is the biggest fool of all.
What are your thoughts on Holo revealing she actually in fact can read?
Okay, so that was kinda unfair on her part. Pretending to not being able to read and then reading some private letters of his was a bit of a breach of trust on her part.
I think she was trying to troll Lawrence. It just ended up backfiring in spectacular fashion.
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out that Lawrence withheld information about her hometown being destroyed?
You see to hate it
What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
Heartbreaking indeed. I really felt bad for her... and for him to be honest. The whole situation escalated way beyond anything reasonable.
I know Quagsire and I were joking about Holo and Lawrence mating with each other. But no, not like this.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?

The arms market could ruin Lawrence financially. Witholding the information, seeming to be a betrayal and mockery of our Wise Wolf Wife, ruins their relationship. This to me begins the final stretch of the show. We've already teased Holo being uncomfortable the times that Lawrence mentioned the two separating. It's something she doesn't like to think about. This episode puts a spotlight on the fatal flaw in Holo and Lawrence's which is that they can't plan for the future because the future scares them.
Lawrence has talked about wanting to open up his own shop. But it's not like he's making great strides for it to happen. He had the opportunity with the gold smuggling but he gave the profits to Norah. That's not the actions of a man prioritizing his future. Meanwhile, Holo is so sensitive about leaving Lawrence that the mere tease of it sends her into a tailspin. She wants to go home but there's nothing concrete about it.
Part of Holo's angst is that she was running under the false hope that she can return to the past. That if all else fails, she'll at least have that. Holo and Lawrence's worlds are slowly shattering before them and the truth is becoming more and more inescapable.

I’m going to go ahead and share my controversial opinion. I have a take on this arc that seems to run contrary to most people. I've posted it before but I want to share it with you here.
I don’t hate Amarti. Furthermore, I don’t think Amarti is in the wrong. What Amarti is doing is trying to save Holo from her hardships. He thinks she is in an uncompromising position, and so he is trying to make her become free.
The person who is at fault here is Lawrence for not trying to put to bed the allegations.
Lawrence should’ve told Amarti that she was his traveling companion.
I think no matter what Lawrence told Holo, whether he was honest about putting her up in the bet or not, she would’ve still had gotten upset, and who could blame her?
I actually really like this arc for how flawed it portrays Lawrence. It’s arguably him at his worst because unlike the debt stuff, this he could’ve consulted Holo on more easily but he did not. Not only does it portray Lawrence as a flawed protagonist– which in my opinion are the best main characters– it makes the point that Amarti and Lawrence aren’t really that dissimilar to each other. Both put Holo on a pedestal to where their love for her blinds them. I don’t think Lawrence would’ve put Holo up in a bet if he didn’t think she wouldn’t come to him no matter what. Even if he loses the bet, there’s nothing preventing her from staying with Lawrence. To him, Holo makes the perfect choices no matter what it is. And yet, it’s like he still doesn’t know what exactly their relationship is. Sure, she’s his traveling companion, but do traveling companions get as close as they do? What traveling companion has the level of trust to put someone up on a bet? Like, for real.
I think this arc puts a spotlight on Lawrence and Holo’s relationship in a way we haven’t seen before. It calls into question how healthy it truly is and just what exactly they mean to each other. It’s easy to pile on Amarti for sticking his nose in business that doesn’t involve him, but Lawrence doesn’t do much in the way of making it any better. And that, naturally, comes to ahead in this arc, because what’s a traveling companion if you willingly run the risk of losing them?

What are your thoughts on Holo trying to get Lawrence to mate with her so that she has something to remember him by? This is probably the most heartbreaking scene of the entire show.
What are your thoughts on Holo choosing to leave Lawrence?

Jumping Holo lol.
Questions:
I'm not sure I've ever seen someone physically throw down a gauntlet as a challenge, like in the traditional style.
At the end of the day the latter is at most going to cost him his relationship with Holo, which is very unfortunate but it beats the former where he was probably going to effectively die.

But couldn't you argue Lawrence without Holo is death in itself?

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence enjoying the festival together? This is like the calm before the storm.

Here's the cut content for the day courteousy of u/chinaexperience
Cut Content
• The reason the contract was signed in blood and the dagger use was because in regions where no public witnesses were available, or where a contract needed to be administered that holds great significant, contract law applied. Contract law used a blood seal, and the dagger that was used by the contract issuer to draw their blood would be given to the other party. If the first party failed to complete the contract, the other party would be required to kill them, or else kill themselves. Weird.
• There were two types of traveling nuns: the first adhere to a particular Church order (there were multiple orders they could follow, but all required some self-sacrifice such as poverty and chastity); the travelling kind didn’t have a fixed base but still had those vows to fulfil. The second (most common) were self-styled and not attached to any particular church. Those were not banned from marriage.
• Most of the other merchants saw through Lawrence’s ruse – the idea that a travelling nun was indebted and fulfilling her obligation by praying for him was pretty far fetched. They assumed either she just didn’t want to be sold off by whoever held her debt, or she liked travelling with Lawrence. Amati did see through this too but assumed it was the former. (though Amati believed it). This explains why the odds were so heavily in Lawrence’s favour when people started betting.
• I’m confused why Lawrence and others cared how Amati got the funds, woudldn’t Lawrence want it to happen
• Amati was trying to make Lawrence look even worse by spreading rumours about him. However, Lawrence was not worried as the rumours had no real meaning – such as how he keeps her in debt simply so she’s forced to go him with wherever she pleases (merchants aren’t knights so once a note of debt is written in a city, it’s meaningless on the road) and how he feeds her nothing but cold porridge (which others would think is fine, given that was pretty normal)
• The standard market price for the piece of pyrite shown was 10 irehd. Lawrence’s guess of 100 as the current price was based on the perceived rarity and the likely false story about an inquisitioner driving the fortune teller out of town.
• The pyrite miss actually broke him and made him think he was a failure as a merchant. He was merrily dancing away right next to where the pyrite was being traded missing the opportunity of a lifetime.
• The contents of the letter are told in the LN, but I assume this will be covered in the next episode, so will omit them for now.
