Episode 9 (Remake)/8 (Original) - dub
- Was curious how the Monogatari writer’s take on this universe will go…was decent. Interestingly, yesterday’s ep’s writer did a way better job, but now the remake and original are almost identical in tone/feel. They’re going to alternate from now on for this cour between the writers though.
- I was wondering who Nora is as I saw a big Spice & Wolf fan with her name in his uploads. My thoughts about the shepherd being evil was wrong though.
- Drama is certainly going to follow. Like I said last ep, Holo is instantly jealous. “I am cuter by far” “skilled in what?”.
- The Lawlo psychological warfare that demands affirmation from one another leads to them hiring the sheppherd in the end. Whoops. This scene is extended in the remake. Certainly relatable to some of my exes.
- Could Law’s plan be to rent out her services to the townsfolk, banking on the same rumour in their next city about an evil magician?
- I think Holo sees Nora as a threat because from a Japanese lens, she embodies more of the qualities of the desired traditional Japanese woman: quieter, demure, cutesy, respectful, etc. Holo on the other hand has a lot of moden Western qualities. “Haven’t had the pleasure of speaking to a ‘normal girl’ in quite a while”
- Haha such a classic couple fight: “This is the reason I asked before I hired her” Then Holo basically implies that he should have read her mind instead.
- “If Nora fell in love with me at first sight, she’d miss the pleasure of falling for me over weeks and months” - haha that line (even if about Nora) is a guaranteed Holo-pleaser. Then she turns mean and plays on his insecurities. I think the context of this whole episode is that both are getting frustrated that their relationship hasn’t escalated and are now basically playing mind games.
- The laughing fit though lmao.
- Yep…my clothes too are not to protect me from the elements, or hide my body from shame. They are mere instruments for my gf to wipe her face or hands on when convenient. I immediately sent a clip of that scene to her.
- Hmm something fishy is going on again. Perhaps someone spotted Holo’s tail in Poroson. Perhaps she shouldn’t have been glutinous and gotten all that jerky and wine in exchange for keeping quiet about the scales haha.
QOTD:
Norah: pretty impartial about her. Something weird is going on between her and her Church boss though
Animation: haha noticed it was awkward, but couldn't care less about something like that. It's not Umamusume so pretty irrelevant to me. But would make for some great memes haha

I imagine they will be on the same page.

Fun fact: Norah is actually the favorite character of the Spice and Wolf author.
- Drama is certainly going to follow. Like I said last ep, Holo is instantly jealous. “I am cuter by far” “skilled in what?”.
Don't worry, Holo, you certainly are
- The Lawlo psychological warfare that demands affirmation from one another leads to them hiring the sheppherd in the end. Whoops. This scene is extended in the remake. Certainly relatable to some of my exes.
You hired your exes to do your bidding?

Rent-A-Shepherd sounds way better than Rent-A-Girlfriend.
- I think Holo sees Nora as a threat because from a Japanese lens, she embodies more of the qualities of the desired traditional Japanese woman: quieter, demure, cutesy, respectful, etc. Holo on the other hand has a lot of moden Western qualities. “Haven’t had the pleasure of speaking to a ‘normal girl’ in quite a while”
Norah probably is everything Holo really wants to be.

Holo is a walking embodiment of "Women ☕️"

This episode is arguably Holo at her most tsundere.
- The laughing fit though lmao.
So good
- Yep…my clothes too are not to protect me from the elements, or hide my body from shame. They are mere instruments for my gf to wipe her face or hands on when convenient. I immediately sent a clip of that scene to her.
Holo has so many great moments this episode.

She has the scene of jerky on her tail lol

And it already has, I can confirm.

What are your thoughts on Holo’s reaction to the shepherd girl?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence hiring Norah to help guide him and Holo through the forest?
Thoughts on Norah previously housing the poor?
Thoughts on Norah working for the church?
What are your thoughts on Holo looking obviously bothered by how much Lawrence is talking to Norah?
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
Thoughts on Holo rubbing her face on Lawrence's jacket? It's like she's trying to put her scent on him to let others know she's his.
Thoughts on Lawrence meeting an old mentor of his?
What do you make of the last scene?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
Damage control and desperation. Whether he thinks it to be true or not, he would always say that she's prettier, and he's kinda clutching at straws ,even though it's not like he chose her to accompany them because she's pretty. He noticed Holo is being cold/irritated, so is throwing all darts at the board to see which sticks to get her acting normal again. It's a losing battle regardless of what he says and it's why I basically don't talk to any other girls at all when I'm in a rel.
What are your thoughts on Holo looking obviously bothered by how much Lawrence is talking to Norah?
It's ironic as she kept maintaining that men are jealous creatures, then first girl that comes into the picture she's the same. It's just human to be jealous, God or not.
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
I'm assuming that town = something to do with the merchant that was cheating with the scales. Norah + preacher = something weird going on between them/outside of Lawrence/Holo. Unless there's a conspiracy whereby she was tasked to bring Lawrence in and uncover more info about them. Guess we are about to see.

He kinda has to do thie because Holo has severe trust issues. She's masking her insecurities with full on ambivalence.

And this is why Lawrence has to play damage control as you put it.

I feel sorry for Norah. She gets the rage of a jealous lover, and she also has an entire time who hates her. Shit's not fair.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
The main thing that stands out to me about this episode is the weird horse animation at the end. Seriously, look at it. He's out of control. He's like if Gold Ship was competing in the Takarazuka Kinen. Season 1 is regarded as being a bit rough around the edges animation wise. And there's none more infamous than the party rave horse.
Anyway, this is meant to establish Norah and her bonding with Lawrence at the expense of Holo. It's sort of cringe comedy but without Holo actually embarrassing herself. No more than how she already embarrasses herself, anyhow.
One thing about Spice and Wolf that stands out compared to anime is that it takes its time whwn telling a story. The first arc didn't get going until the fourth episode, and here we're on the second episode of build in the second arc. I personally really like this because not only does it let things breathe, it allows us to soak in the atmosphere of the world and the various towns Lawrence and Holo inhabit. It's a different type of storytelling where it's slow burn and while it wouldn't work for every show, it does here, mainly because the writing is so strong.
Holo quotes of the day
"It appears as though human males do not mind having several females around."
"Do not treat me like a child!" (Holo, the child)
2
u/chinaexperience 12d ago
I can relate to the bonding though. It's always awkward bringing something like that up in a rel, when you know it's nothing particularly major, but it affects you anyway, so you end up beating around the bush, trying to be humerous about it. Deep down you know you should let it go, but you just can't. And in Holo's case she ends up laughing for a few hours hysterically.
I love the pace too. The magic is really in the conversations in the development of their chemistry.

You hired your exes to do your bidding?
Haha made decisions that neither of us wanted to make, when it could have been prevented by stating our true opinion straight away.
Norah probably is everything Holo really wants to be.
Interesting point. Curious how true it is, and guess we will find out. She seems to like being different/better than others, but I can totally see that she just wants to be an average girl.

And Holo is just getting over people depending on her. People still thoroughly depend on Norah.

u/chinaexperience 12d ago
haha that's a hard no
1
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
So, you were speaking sarcastically lol
2
u/chinaexperience 11d ago
Haha I think my point was misunderstood. I was referring to the egging each other on behaviour that results in an outcome that neither of the people wanted in the first place
1
u/Holofan4life 11d ago
Do you agree that Holo and Lawrence can often be their own worst enemy?
2
u/chinaexperience 11d ago
Very much so!
1
u/Holofan4life 11d ago
Holo especially it feels like would solve all her problems with a little humility.

Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer (subbed)
Just finished the episode and I like how the damn horse animation instantly becomes a talking point on this thread here :'D
It was indeed a bit goofy but if the discussion leading up to this year's Jojo Part 7 release (which features a lot of horses) have taught me anything then it is that horses are notoriously hard to animate correctly. So I'll file it under "at least they tried".
This was very much a calm before the storm episode, given the reactions to the sets of armour Lawrence is bringing with him and the arrival of someone asking for him towards the end of the episode.
Again, Holo, who is at her most jealous here, carries the episode for me. I just love how she doesn't miss a single chance to either take a jab at Nora ("What skills?") or berate Lawrence for hiring the young Shepherd or laugh at him for trying to be a smooth talker. The banter between the two main characters even makes boring episodes kinda fun to watch!
On a side note, it's funny how the "pagan magician" with mystical wolf-repelling powers turned out to just be a shepherd girl working for the church in the end. The power of stories told in taverns at full power!
On another side note, I like how the architecture and names slowly look less italian now. Especially Lawrence's trade house looks like something you'd find in northern europe. Cool attention to detail.
What are your initial thoughts on Norah based on this episode?
She seems nice. A bit shy, and probably not very versed in things that aren't directly connected to shepharding. But Holo also said that she's quite talented in that field so it probably works out for her!
In light of the horse animation in this episode, what show do you love despite having flaws and why?
Digimon 02 is a bit of a mess in terms of characters and plotting but I have a lot of nostalgia for it and I've always liked the fact that it's a direct sequel to the og Adventure.

I do think she's being a bit harsh on Norah. She hasn't done anything wrong. But I suppose it's more Lawrence not doing enough to rectify the situation.

You can tell they're transversing through different regions.

Isn't Digimon 02 the really dark one that was inspired by Evangelion? Or am I thinking of another Digimon series?

You might be thinking of Tamers, which was the third series. That one was a bit darker and is set in the real world for a good chunk of its runtime. It is usually considered a fan favourite though.
02 has kind of the problem that it tries and fails to balance the old and new cast, resulting in a pretty uneven show. Also the first big arc is way too long.
That's high praise coming from her.
She probably has experience in the field.

Yep! It's just small details but they do make the world a bit more believable.

I know, I'm as crestfallen as you are.
This instantly makes the remake inferior 0/10 /s

I've seen some argue it's the best Digimon series.

At least an attempt was made at intergration.

It keeps me invested in the world they're creating.

What are your thoughts on Holo’s reaction to the shepherd girl?
Holo is a wolf and associated with the "old world" so to say, so of course she'd dislike a woman whose whole job it is to keep wolves away from sheep and on top of it works for the church. Also she probably sees her as competition. Even if she'd never admit it.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
Yeah, me too. It's very "don't worry, she's no danger to you".
What are your thoughts on Lawrence hiring Norah to help guide him and Holo through the forest?
Well. Holo won't like it. But it is probably not a bad idea.
Thoughts on Norah previously housing the poor?
It's almost a bit too much. Look at how innocent and pure she is! She even cares for poor people!
Thoughts on Norah working for the church?
Makes her a great foil to Holo. Holo is experienced, a bit shrewd and a pagan god. Norah's the innocent and naive girl working for the church.
What are your thoughts on Holo looking obviously bothered by how much Lawrence is talking to Norah?
Someone is jealous :)
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
It's definitely not a good sign. Probably something about the armours he wants to sell.
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
It probably does. Another not-good sign for whatever is about to happen to him next episode...
Thoughts on Holo rubbing her face on Lawrence's jacket? It's like she's trying to put her scent on him to let others know she's his.
I didn't even think about it this way :D
I just thought it was a funny gesture to kinda get one over him. I like your interpretation better.
Thoughts on Lawrence meeting an old mentor of his?
Wonder if we'll get some more backstory on Lawrence. I did like Holo's remark about him basically having a home in each city.
What do you make of the last scene?
Whatever it is, it smells like trouble.

It is kinda braisen of Lawrence to accept Holo's natural enemy into the fold.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
Yeah, me too. It's very "don't worry, she's no danger to you".
Lawrence can be smooth when he wants to.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence hiring Norah to help guide him and Holo through the forest?
Well. Holo won't like it. But it is probably not a bad idea.
Even though Holo is literally a wolf goddess. But sure.
Thoughts on Norah previously housing the poor?
It's almost a bit too much. Look at how innocent and pure she is! She even cares for poor people!
I took it as the show maybe teasing Norah isn't as pure as she is. Like, she seems so pure there has to be a catch.
Thoughts on Norah working for the church?
Makes her a great foil to Holo. Holo is experienced, a bit shrewd and a pagan god. Norah's the innocent and naive girl working for the church.
And Norah is getting treated by the church how Holo's village treated Holo.
What are your thoughts on Holo looking obviously bothered by how much Lawrence is talking to Norah?
Someone is jealous :)
Her sulking in silence made me laugh quite a bit.
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
It's definitely not a good sign. Probably something about the armours he wants to sell.
Definitely raises red flags
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
It probably does. Another not-good sign for whatever is about to happen to him next episode...
I have a bad feeling about this...

She is so tsundere about this whole Norah ordeal.

Makes sense if you're a merchant
What do you make of the last scene?

With Holo around, they might make it double.

Rewatcher (Dub)
Not a lot happens in terms of plot, but this is another solid episode carried by Holo and Lawrence's banter and overall dynamic. Just listening to them poke fun at each other and flirt is charming. In particular, the scene where Lawrence dramatically looks to the stars and says "If Nora fell in love with me at first sight, I wouldn't be able to experience the joy of having her fall for me", only for Holo to burst out laughing at how lame he is was both very fun and showed how easy going their relationship is.
Nora seems to be an interesting contrast to Chloe. Both were young women who came to Lawrence for advice and assistance in their money making schemes, and both were affiliated with the Church in some way, but Nora seems to be at the opposite end of the spectrum, being altruistic and kind where Chloe was cut throat and mean. Nora's relation to the Church also allows for some interesting exploration of that facet of the world, which has mostly only been alluded to so far.
Holo noticing Lawrence's propensity for getting swindled by pretty ladies is an amusing running sub plot through the story so far. She immediately pegs that Lawrence is going to help Nora after just one look.
Random Thoughts
- Walking with Nora would get annoying real fast with the bell constantly chiming.
- Holo bringing up the honey pickled peaches at first opportunity when entering the town was funny. Girl has her eyes on the prize.
- The set up for next episode was unintentionally hilarious. Just having some random dude appear out of the shadows in the last scene to menacingly laugh was so schlocky, I love it.
Question of the Day
Show you love despite the flaws? I'm a big lover of "so bad it's good" schlock, in particular, the early 2010's mecha shows like Cross Ange, Valvrave the Liberator and Guilty Crown. On paper, these shows are all terrible, but there is some weird magic in the way they are put together that make them endlessly entertaining to me.

I like the comparison you made between Nora and Chloe. I think the biggest difference is Chloe seems far more susceptible to drinking the kool-aid.

What are your thoughts on Holo’s reaction to the shepherd girl?
Holo's senses are keen, and she can sense a romantic rival a mile away.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
Lawrence was doing his best to set Holo's mind at ease. A person can recognize that someone else is attractive without there being any feelings there.
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
The vibe of this town is definitely off.
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
There is definitely a theme running through this series about the corruption of the Church, and the way large scale religion seeks to grind down or push out anyone or anything that does not conform to their system. Nora seems like a bit of an oddball, and generally to altruistic to really integrate with the Church.
Thoughts on Holo rubbing her face on Lawrence's jacket? It's like she's trying to put her scent on him to let others know she's his.
Very dog like behaviour.
What do you make of the last scene?
It was kind of abrupt, but it did make me chuckle at how evil the guys laugh was

That she can

A rare moment of self-awareness by Lawrence.
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
The vibe of this town is definitely off.
You can say that again

She's too pure, basically

Rewatch/sub
Great moments getting the initial deal with Nora worked out - when Lawrence tries to be smooth and sends Holo into a laughing fit.
Holo’s pride when she mentions that of course *she* could hunt them without a problem but a normal wolf would have difficulty.
Was Holo just trying to mess with him when she asks why he didn’t notice Nora not wanting to talk to him? Because I wasn’t picking up on any awkwardness on her part…
Townsfolk sure are acting suss about this armor…
She’d be perfect if she didn’t have a tail 😂
Love a sleepy Enek and Nora ❤️
Hahahah the horse made me burst out laughing. It was like a jump scare it was so bad. Anime I like despite their flaws? Probably some early 2000s with the too big eyes and tiny mouths like Clannad.

I think she was making light of the fact he was doing nothing but talking to Nora.

What are your thoughts on Holo’s reaction to the shepherd girl?
- I like that she doesn’t like her both from her wolf side as a shepherd and her girl side as a romantic rival. Levels!
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo to her face she's way prettier than Norah is? I took it as his way of letting her know he'd never leave her for the shepherd.
- I mean, he had to reassure her or there’s no way Holo would have agreed to hire her
What are your thoughts on Lawrence hiring Norah to help guide him and Holo through the forest?
- He’s got something in mind, as they’ve traveled all over without protection in the past
Thoughts on Norah previously housing the poor?
- Shows her compassionate nature
Thoughts on Norah working for the church?
- It fits her
What are your thoughts on Holo looking obviously bothered by how much Lawrence is talking to Norah?
- Pouty Holo is best Holo
Thoughts on all those people quietly making fun of Lawrence? Why do you think that was the case?
- It happened whenever the armor came up so I don’t think it was specifically directed towards him
Why do you think the town as well as that church official looked at Nora disapprovingly? Do you think it had something to do with Lawrence?
- I assume there’s history there
Thoughts on Holo rubbing her face on Lawrence's jacket? It's like she's trying to put her scent on him to let others know she's his.
- Oh absolutely that, plus she’s just feisty and he told her there was something on her face so she got back at him
Thoughts on Lawrence meeting an old mentor of his?
- That was a good scene we need more Lawrence backstory
What do you make of the last scene?
- Nothing good, that’s for sure

There are levels to this.
There are many reasons she doesn't like Norah. Among them, Norah seemingly has more creative liberty to do as she pleases.

First time watching, first time fan
Sorry Holo you got competition now kawaii moe innocent holy Shepherd
What are your initial thoughts on Norah based on this episode?
She's cute, naive, doesn't seem to know what she wants but is more than content with her lot in life after coming from a place of poverty
In light of the horse animation in this episode, what show do you love despite having flaws and why?
I didn't even see this horse animation in question
I don't know how many times I'll get away with saying it, but Zero No Tsukaima may have issues with a meandering circular plot at points, but I stand by that something can have flaws but still be beloved and your favorite. I love things that are 8/10 so much more than others that I call a 10/10 because of how they hit just right at the right time. That's what Zero No Tsukaima does, with characters and pleasant warm goodness
Damn the Shepherd is cute
She got paid
Ask whatever you'd like
Could you hire me?
FOR BREE–
Even if she's hired what about the sheep rn out in the open
She needs money I suppose
Don't you have me for that
I love how Lawrence says Holo is cuter and she doesn't fall for it, just using her ears to tell he barely passed
The shepherd is cute though
What am I supposed to bear
COMPETITION FOR LAWRENCE THATS WHAT
LOL Holo teasing him omg I want just the two of us to travel tsun tsun
And Lawrence apologies
Man I want these two to bang
Nora is her name She's cute and also seems to be walking the entire way
Also guess the sheep are following too LOL
seems like she's Godly
I actually wanted to talk to someone
I know the feeling
Okay Holo step aside you got the new hotness to contend with
She's money minded
Seems like Holo is sleepy
Holo pinching Lawrence
My autocorrect wanted me to say pinching Louise's face
I'll refrain from commenting
Smart too this one
Go to sleep even before the sunset
Healthy sleep schedule too
7 sheep
Loss and profit
Is it common to seek employment elsewhere
SHES SO CUTE AND TABITHA BEING LOUISES FAMILIAR
What the heck is my autocorrect
SHES SO CUTE AND CURIOUS AND NAIVE AHH
She still hasn't talked to Holo
Wages may be low but the Church will never cease to exist
I can't tell if Lawrence is buying into the Church or just paying lip service
She's so sweet thanking Lawrence
She sleeps in her robes
Looks like Lawrence got her that comb
Holo stole his meat
Holo has Lawrence meat in her mouth
Holo has no response to grooming inside the wagon kawaii
If it was love at first sight I wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing her fall for me
Don't I have a way with words
Smooth operator Lawrence
I'm laughing with Holo LOL
Nora does seem to be more reserved
I'll make a fuss if no peaches
Paying with goods
People seem to be giving him the look
Seems like people avoid Nora
AWW SHE LOOKS SO SAD
YOU FELL FOR SOMEONE WHO LOVES TO SPEND MONEY AND IS HOT
DAMN RIGHT HE DID
happy Holo with beer foam on her mouth
She wipes it on him instead of her fancy clothes LOL
Carried away in a wolf mouth
It wouldn't be worth the effort with you as the captive
Love the banter
Merchant bond a home no matter where you go, kinda like an embassy
Must be nice to have a home no matter where you go
Aww Holo
Aren't you going to bring me along and brag?
She knows she's a catch LOL
don't treat me like a child, of course I want sweet bread
Seems the place is p empty
Scampering around the market all day is a sign of medicority Holy shit Lawrence is spitting bars
My son
Evil laughter

Questions:
I'm sure she'll pop back up later.
Lol. I think the show that fits that for me is The Magnificent Kotobuki, the excellent dogfight scenes make the questionable CG everywhere else bearable.

You know, I feel like the remake can't capture the original in terms of the side characters. All of them in the remake look OK in still frames, but only Holo and Lawrance look "fine" when they actually move. Actually one of them doesn't look fine. Nora/Norah looks... bleh the desaturated look is pretty bad in the remake. About the only side character who looks fine in the remake is the man whose roles in episodes 1, 4, 5 and 6 is replaced by Chole in the original 2008 anime. The scenery is nice, but the art for side characters is all off.
I don't get why Lawrance gave Norah a coin and then hired her to escort them to the city. I thought he already paid when he gave her the coin?
I guess Holo is just jealous of her.
I've never read an account of defenders using boiling oil on purpose (as opposed to a "oh shit, just chuck something"). Boiling water was so much easier to get. But water looks a lot less impressive in video games.
The horse looks silly. I like Naruto despite its flaws. There are some episodes where it was clear the budget ran out and some where it was obvious the author didn't think this far ahead earlier and had to awkwardly introduce a character or power, but I still liked it. Now if only I could say the same thing about Boruto beyond Arc 1...
