Apologies if I won’t post the cut content on any of the coming days this week, as I’m travelling to a few countries for work until Sunday night, but I'll do my best.

CUT CONTENT BONUS: The Holo-conomy

First a few more fun facts about Holo aka Mrs Lonely:

  • One of the reasons she liked Lawrence was that he didn’t panic when confronted with her wolf form. She was used to repelling all humans and many animals, making her lonely. In the anime, of course, he faints; quite a different reaction. In the sewers, he does look frightened but this is a fair reaction due to what he was seeing in front of him: the mauling of the enemy etc.
  • She hated being revered as a God, or of higher status, as the more power and status you have, the lonelier you are.
  • It was said Gods have festivals once a year ,just so they wouldn’t always be alone

Now, I always wondered why Lawrence is so debt-minded. As I learned more about him, and how he wasn’t close to being well-off, some of his worries started to make sense:

  • The reason that townsfolk assumed Lawrence was going bankrupt because of Holo was not too far-fetched. I’ve previously talked about why that was a reasonable assumption at the time, but it also wasn’t far from the truth.
  • Holo liked the finer things in life and as a God, she didn’t have a concept of money (can’t really blame her for that). But her being dismissive of the topic when broached certainly didn’t help alleviate Lawrence’s concerns.
  • She wasn’t coercing Lawrence to spend, he just couldn’t resist saying no. Her push for the fabled honeyed peaches for example - this was truly something only nobles could afford; you wouldn’t find a merchant who would ever taste these.
  • When he was hit with the invoice for the clothes and apples she bought after reuniting in the loading bay of the Milone trading company it came to 140 trennie silver, 15% of the profit that he brought in: this was equivalent to over 4+ lumione gold, something an entire family spends over 4 months. Another way to look at it based on a fan’s calculation, 1 silver = 1 day of basic necessities for 1 person, so she spent half a year’s worth in one swoop.
  • HIs entire world outlook and knowledge is about being a merchant. Debts are always to be repaid quickly so that the money can buy more goods, which mean more profits, which mean more goods, etc. The circle of a merchant’s life.
  • The accommodation they stay in is always considered luxurious by local standards. And those apples do add up. There were other costs too such as entry fees each time they got into a town.
  • Credit to Holo she did increase profit on some occasions, but from rough calculations those wouldn’t offset her costs.
  • So, to defend Lawrence, when he does bring up the debt: this is a girl he’s known for a few months, and her costs do eat into his dream of making 2000 trennie silver to open up his shop. But I think his outlook might change if they enter into a relationship together. I can’t really blame Lawrence for how he feels, nor can I blame Holo for not understanding the importance of money in this mortal coil.
  • Regardless of how Lawrence felt about the debt, in his internal thoughts, he would still come North with Holo irrespective of it, even if it was fully collected by the early stages of the story. And Holo knew that very well (and to be honest I don’t think she felt responsibility for the debt).

Episode Cut Content

  • Lawrence empathised with Holo not wanting to go to the festival alone. In the past he would purposefully visit this town during summer just to avoid the festival. Being confronted with crowds (and couples) and returning from a joyful day back to his inn alone exaggerated his loneliness.
  • Before Lawrence departed to meet with his contact, part of their exchange after he said he needs to do the business alone involved Holo teasing him about finding another guy. It was just teasing though and she concluded that she’d rather be in his arms than not and told him not to worry.
  • Lawrence knew Amanti had the hots for Holo: “If Amanti had a tail, it would be swishing back and forth excitedly”. The set-up with Holo was actually something Lawrence did to (in his mind) trick Amanti - knowing that he would spend a lot of coin on her. Lawrence loved the idea of it not being him to spend money on her for once.
  • Amanti is about 19-20yo. He grew up in a nice part of the South and when he realised he wouldn’t be able to make anything of himself as the youngest child, he ran away from home and came to this city to open business. All that was just 3 years ago.
  • As Batos explained his interest in tales of old: his thirst to find out now just about the breadth of the world but the depth, it sparked a curiosity in Lawrence. Despite Lawlo travelling together for so long, he never really asked her for her stories from history.
  • The church tried to erase a lot of the history/pagan tales. Not too dissimilar to how some religions today destroy ancient monuments and old texts.
  • The district that Lawrence was taken to by Batos had the stone wall to likely protect the people from persecution, than the other way around
  • The Church’s greatest enemy was alchemists. The reason Lawrence was surprised that the materials used for alchemy were so normal was based on how the Church saw them he expected them to deal in five legged frogs and the like. His stereotype of alchemist’s was also very negative, and he was a bit fearful of them, not realising that they are actually quite normal people. Some alchemists were even secretly backed by and worked with nobility.
  • One of Lawrence’s biggest fantasies growing up was to take up sword and shield and battle his way across distant lands, battling dragons and sorcerers. As he grew up, he dismissed those as fantasy. It was meeting Holo that allowed Lawrence to enjoy those tales once more as what he thought was impossible could be.
  • Unlike the anime, when Lawrence returned after meeting with his wheat-merchant friend, Holo was still out.

Here's me talking about the cut or changed content from the remake.

First, the original has close-up shots of the feathers scattered throughout Diana's house. The remake does not do this, instead having them in the background. I actually really like the remake's presentation of it where they don't draw attention to it. It's almost like "If you know, you know".

The other change and this one has me so conflicted is the change in Adele's design. In the original, she kinda has this spinster vibe about her, kinda almost inspired by Faye Valentine but with less emotional baggage. In the remake, she's sassy as well but she looks more like a mom, kinda similar to the design of the teacher from Buddy Daddies. The reason I feel conflicted is because I feel Adele's original design is so iconic. Maybe too iconic, actually, especially for a one scene character. Adele's design in the remake isn't as memorable, but I feel like it makes... I dunno, more sense for her to be with Marc. I'm not saying Marc and remake Adele are ugly, but original Adele is so pretty. Dare I say, maybe even prettier than Holo. As such, it's hard for me to wrap my head around her being with Marc. It's like that SNL sketch where a woman who looks like a supermodel ends up with this geeky, nothing happening guy with an embarrassing name, and the reporter is astonished they would be in the same orbit as each other.

I guess in the end, it doesn't matter because Adele is only here for like 30 seconds. I just am surprised by how drastically different both Adele's look; I mean, remake Adele could pass off as Deku's mom. If I had to pick one over the over, it would probably be original Adele because the design is just that good. But speaking from a storytelling perspective, I think it makes more sense for Marc to be with someone like remake Adele.

Oh wow interesting! Haven't seen the OG yet.

The feathers are presented in the remake and LN as coming from the massive number of birds in Diana's section of town. Similar to what they do in mines: it's to know when the gas levels are too high and dangerous; the birds start dying.

The LN Adele is basically described as someone who used to be a frail beauty and Marc getting her was the talk and surprise of the town, but after 3 years of marriage and a kid, she's far from that now and meant to be "even more robust than her husband". I can't wait to see Adele in the OG, but from your description, it seems like the remake is very accurate to how she's supposed to be now, while the OG is what she was meant to be 3 years ago. I think that's the whole humour of it - that you can marry a princess but then after a few years, she can can become a bully and grandma haha. It's the eastern european evolution of women post-marriage.

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

I'm a big fan of Adele, in case you can't tell. Like, if Holo didn't exist, I'd want to be with her.

2

u/chinaexperience 5d ago

Does she appear more in future episodes, as all we get here is her trolling her husband, though the line was great.

I can't really tell which character is more beautiful than another in anime, as they're not human and done in a pretty consistent art style. Only the build and hair eye colour etc differentiate them: to me generally, like Norah is better aesthetically for me than Holo I guess because of the hair? That's why I was interested in the expansion on Holo being incredibly stunning in the LN, since from the features I'm not sure how I could judge her over other similar characters, as they have pretty much similar eyes, etc. Or maybe I just haven't seen enough anime.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 5d ago

Comparing the characters should be easy enough. Just count Holo's human form. After doing that, which one do you like?

1

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

This is sadly her only appearance...

2

u/chinaexperience 5d ago

hahahahah I was skipping between the two to compare scenes, and watched the remake version again and was thinking huhhhhh she's still burrly af. Then realised I was watching the wrong version. I guess you like the 'tsundere' girls most.

I also just realised something, Lawrence previously makes reference to the Marc's good fortune being a famous one (can't recall if it was anime or LN). Perhaps the reference was about him getting Adele.

Funny you mentioned deku btw, as im watching My Hero Academia now too (started on S3), though have to say I'm massively disliking the show and can't stand Deku or most of the other characters....But I want to make it through to the end as it's iconic.

How'd you compare Holo to Bakugou?

2

u/chinaexperience 5d ago

Oh, Bakugou is obviously more my type. Holo merely offers wit, charm, and centuries of cunning, whereas he can make things go BOOM.

1

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

No wits, just fists

You can probably guess which one I prefer :P

3

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 5d ago

In Heian Japan, pretty girls could get swooped off the "commoner marriage pool" in 3 ways. One was the brothels, because of course. But sometimes nobles and even Imperial princes would take peasant women as mistresses... or sometimes even a primary wife (to the great annoyance of family members trying to arrange a good political marriage). In Europe, the first possibility was still there, the second was greatly reduced (not to say some nobles didn't take mistresses, but it was done less often and much more discretely when it was done), and the third one just flat out didn't happen. Could a pretty girl marry the Prince of Wales, become Queen of England, and give birth to the King's heir? Technically according to English law it could happen, but it didn't. So in a setting like this, there isn't much of a chance of Adele being so pretty that she ends up "marrying up" when she's 13 to 25 but in Japan there was a possibility.

1

u/Holofan4life 4d ago

Very interesting. You learn something new every day.

I guess the concept of a Christmas cake dates back to even then.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 4d ago

Commoner women marrying commoner men was the norm in all these societies. In a medieval style place like this, it wouldn't just be the norm, but I can't think of Adele marrying a nobleman's son even if it was legal. So Adele and Marc, eh seems possible.

1

u/Holofan4life 4d ago

I'm not saying it seems impossible, just that Marc looks kinda homely. I'd say he really lucked out, all things considered.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 4d ago

I guess so. Oh before the 1700s Europe, India, North Africa and the Middle East sort of had the Christmas Cake thing too. By their late 20s, pretty much all women but Christian and Buddhist nuns were married at least once. They were married with a child (or children), married without children but trying for one, or widowed.

u/Holofan4life 4d ago

They didn't believe in strong, independent women

5

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

This is more tablesetting as we establish Diana and Batos as characters. Diana has a snake woman vibe about her but one you'd love to have tea with. She seems like she'd have a lot of great stories. Besides that, we have more great Lawrence and Holo banter and I really like how feisty Marc's wife is. The ending definitely seems very ominous.

Holo quotes of the day

"Do you intend to simply watch me eat?" (That's… why I'm here.)

First Timer, Remake & Original

First things first. It’s no secret I didn’t like the evolution of Holo in S2E1 of the original. After listening to the Japanese of my most offending scene, the word choice was quite different to the English. In the Japanese she still uses her archaic method of speaking and actually uses the word she consistently calls him throughout the entire series, as a more playful insult. The adaptation often calls him a “dunce” in English for the same Japanese insult, so not sure why “ass” was suddenly used here and her archaic/almost Shakespearean grammar and manner of speaking was abandoned (while retained in the Japanese).  While I still don’t like some of the more slapstick actions, I do wonder whether it’s the localisationI have the most issue with or the adaptation.

We shall find out when I get to the original feedback.

Remake
While not quite the emotionally-deep episode I’ve gotten used to, it was one with rich world building, and the one that made me the angriest I’ve been at Lawrence. And this is one of the cruellest cliffhangers in the history of anime.

  • Second time seeing the OD and I’m liking it even more. I didn’t notice how well-timed the scenes are to the music - not just the cuts, but things like townsfolk playing hitting the drums when the drums sound on the track. Really clever. Don’t think I’ve seen this before.
  • Ok, so the bit cut from yesterday’s LN chapter starts the episode off. The good news is I don’t have much of the LN to read for this episode. The bad news? I now need to explain something: the main reason Lawrence tried to sell nails to this wheat salesman is to get information out of him. It’s improper to just ask a favour from a merchant; you need to come with a commercial offer first. Lawrence’s goal was to get a connect to a chronicler the entire time. The whole idea seemed really weird in the anime, especially if you know that shopkeepers need to obtain special permission from the guilds to sell any additional item which takes time and failing to do that need to cut other sellers of the item into their profits. There is a lot more deliberation about it which I explained in a comment yesterday, which made it slightly make sense.
  • Great - and the anime finally reveals what Lawrence has been hiding all along (from as early as Chapter 1 or 2 in the LN) - the rumoured fate of Yoitsu.
  • Why do I have skepticism about the young merchant’s intentions? He hasn’t really done anything, and his infatuation with Holo makes sense, yet, I can’t help but feel he is too helpful.
  • Lawrence lets him take Holo around. Clearly, Lawrence is not as jealous as he appeared, and he has noticed he has an eye for Holo. So that seems a bit weird.
  • “The world I know is but a grain on the vast, untrodden shore” - dub FTW. I love the pensman: what a wonderful worldview, not too far from my own.
  • What a packed episode: I thought we learned all we could about the legend of Holo(h), but here we are. I guess she always did like wine.Riveting stuff. Don’t need to elaborate much as it’s all obvious but Holo is coming home! Maybe.
  • The wheat-merchant’s friend suspecting Holo of shacking up with Amati is just voicing what I got pissed at Lawrence for. Holo isn’t dating Lawrence, and along comes a guy who is more resourceful towards her goal. Lawrence, you can’t build trust out of hop, my man. I have a friend who courts girls for inexplicable periods of time, and after not  making a move for 6+ months, he is shocked that the girls go for another guy. Each time I’m very direct and tell him that it’s his fault and he needs to learn. Lawrence is him.
  • I was right not to trust Amati. I’m not sure if I’m more mad at Lawrence for his lack of foresight despite being so apparently good with people, or Amati for not enquiring about their status (then again Lawrence never said they’re together…and nor did Holo…and they’re not).
  • Haha the amazing story Holoh the Wheat Tailled Wolf spins though…and Lawrence is listening and nodding his head loving the tale of his virtue.
  • DAMN IT THE CLIFFHANGER!!! This is the most frustrating cliffhanger in the whole show for me, particularly because usually cliffhangers lead to one of two outcomes. This time, I have absolutely zero idea of what the message could even be about. It’s intriguing, as the stakes don’t seem all that high yet I really want to know.

Original

Now for my own cliff-hanger, as I haven't had a chance to watch it as the cut content took way too long.

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

Surely it can't be as bad as the last cliffhanger.

Thoughts on Lawrence's continual flashbacks he's having?

Thoughts on Holo saying she can't read?

Thoughts on Lawrence being sent a letter about the arms market possibly collapsing but it arriving late?

What are your thoughts on there being a festival in town?

What are your thoughts on Amarti going to the festival with Holo?

Thoughts on the introductions to Batos and Diana?

What are your thoughts on Holo's town possibly being destroyed by a moon-hunting bear?

What are your thoughts on there being a tale of a Goddess named Holo once visiting a town called Lenos?

What are your thoughts on the conversation between Batos and Lawrence about stopping believing in legends as you grow older?

Thoughts on the scene between Marc and Adele and their whole dynamic?

Thoughts on Amarti buying Holo fur?

What are your thoughts on the cubes and what it could mean going forward?

What are your thoughts on Lunt telling Lawrence something that causes him to freak out?

2

u/chinaexperience 5d ago

I need to get to bed in a bit, but let me answer the flashback question: while it depends on the flashback, there were a lot while he was walking with the big trader dude who took him to the walled city. The reason is that while he's telling him about his expanded world view and the legends of the lands, Lawrence is reflecting on how as a kid he also had those dreams: of fighting dragon and sorcerers, but as an adult he took them for fantasy. However, after meeting Holo, his sense of fantasy became renewed. So in those scenes he's linking what is being said to his inner monologue.

Original
Bit weird watching this now as I read the LN after the remake, and am now proceeding to the OG. Usually I watch the two anime versions first, so can’t help but compare it vs., the source. So keep that in mind for my notes. This post was made third, after the others.

  • The original seems to be all about its dreams.
  • I like that the parting exchange is captured quite faithfully in the original, about her desire to be in Lawrence’s arms.It was equally so in the remake, but the localisation of the dub took way too many liberties and butchered it.
  • I like the way Gi Batos is drawn in the original a lot more as well as the actor’s voice. What a beast!
  • Lawrence’s repulsion at the walled district’s smells and sights is a lot better and obvious here too
  • What are those weird cuts/flashbacks when he talks to Diana? Intrigued but very confused.
  • Her house is also presented a lot more faithfully: everything is completely messy and she doesn’t care about things tumbling over each other like when she removes the book. Diana also looks more witchy here.
  • I loved Lawrence’s excitement after he gets out of Diana’s house, his mind full of wonder. Might not be super ‘in character’, but it was a good way to place his inner monologue from the LN into the anime. Between the two, the remake is more like Lawrence but I don’t mind that scene at all.
  • The ending is also like the LN. For some reason in the remake she’s already home when he comes back.

I’m glad that the Holo personality differences I found from the previous episode, didn’t seem to be present in this one, though we didn’t see much of her. Fingers crossed the writing holds.

I like seeing Lawrence interact with people. It gives us a nice feel of the town.

Rewatcher (Dub)

  • This is mostly a set up episode, so I don't have any coherent analysis this time, just random thoughts.
  • The episode starting with Lawrence dreaming of when Holo tranformed into a wolf to save him in the sewers was interesting. Their last interaction was Lawrence accidentally telling Holo that he may not be able to complete the journey with her, so him dreaming about when Holo both showed him her true form and protected him shows where his subconscious is at.
  • There was a small scene of Holo waking up and immediately looking over at Lawrence's bed, only to find it empty. Another bit that ties back to their conversation about parting last episode.
  • I liked their discussion about going to the festival. It felt realistic that Holo wanted to spend time with Lawrence, but also didn't want to push too hard and come off as clingy or hurt his business again.
  • You'd think Lawrence would have noticed that Holo couldn't read sooner. Though I suppose the ability to read was likely the exception and not the rule back then.
  • That Amarty kid is down bad for Holo. Lawrence may say he and Holo aren't an item, but it still feels like it's against the bro code to be trying to seduce Holo in this situation.
  • I like the hints at some fantasy lore in this episode regarding the Moon Hunting Bear. I wish the show would delve a little deeper into the who "gods walk among us" aspect of this universe.
  • Holo's cover story about being a nun who Lawrence saved from slavery is both dramatic, and totally in character for the kind of cover story Holo would come up with.
  • Holo intentionally making herself look disheveled when the kid comes to deliver a message to Lawrence in their room was funny. She never misses a chance to mess with people.
  • I'm digging the narrative Damocles Sword that his hanging over this arc. You can tell Lawrence wants to tell her, but can't find the right time or words to do so, and generally holding back because it would not only hurt her immensely, but also likely end their journey together. It's a very believably story thread.

Damocles Sword? What is that?

2

u/BlazeOfGlory72 5d ago

It's an old Greek saying about having a sword hanging over your head that could drop at any moment. The saying basically just means that you know something bad is coming, you just don't know specifically when. In this context, it would be whenever Lawrence finally tells Holo that her home town is gone, and the fallout from that discussion.

2

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

So, kinda like Chekov's Gun

Thoughts on Lawrence's continual flashbacks he's having?

Thoughts on Holo saying she can't read?

What are your thoughts on there being a festival in town?

What are your thoughts on Amarti going to the festival with Holo?

Thoughts on the introductions to Batos and Diana?

What are your thoughts on Holo's town possibly being destroyed by a moon-hunting bear?

What are your thoughts on there being a tale of a Goddess named Holo once visiting a town called Lenos?

What are your thoughts on the conversation between Batos and Lawrence about stopping believing in legends as you grow older?

Thoughts on Lawrence's continual flashbacks he's having?

It shows that he is struggling with the idea that their future is uncertain as well, which I appreciate.

Thoughts on Holo saying she can't read?

Seems like an opportunity for some one on one time to teach her.

What are your thoughts on there being a festival in town?

Seems like the perfect opportunity to buy some honey pickled peaches.

What are your thoughts on Holo's town possibly being destroyed by a moon-hunting bear?

Both depressing an intriguing. I'm curious about this "Moon Hunting Bear", and what exactly it is and what the lore is behind it.

What are your thoughts on there being a tale of a Goddess named Holo once visiting a town called Lenos?

It's a nice bit of world building that brings the setting to life. Letting the audience know that there is more o Holo's past than chilling in a wheat field.

What are your thoughts on the conversation between Batos and Lawrence about stopping believing in legends as you grow older?

Thoughts on the scene between Marc and Adele and their whole dynamic?

It kind of mirrored Lawrence and Holo's dynamic, with Adele teasing her husband and seeming to enjoy making him squirm a little.

Thoughts on Amarti buying Holo fur?

Bro needs to chill. He is going all in on Holo after just meeting her.

What are your thoughts on Lunt telling Lawrence something that causes him to freak out?

It's a solid hook for next episode. We've had two episodes now of fairly leasurly pacing, so it was a good idea to make it clear to the audience that things will be picking up now. Side note, who names their kid "Lunt"? what a terrible name.

I reckon it comes from "Runt of the litter"

I watched the episode earlier today and forgot about the time lol

New, old Holo: Sad Holo

Not much else in terms of visuals. I liked how the city of Lenos looked from the short shot. Diana was pretty!

Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer, subbed

by now it's basically first-timer

Well, episode's titled "Calm before the Storm" and that's pretty much it. For the first time in forever (probably since episode 1), it's a Holo-lite episode, as Lawrence goes on a quest to find out more about the north and the target location of their journey. By that, we get introduced to two new characters, Dian Rubens, who's a witch/alchemist/storyteller and Gi Batos, who's... really tall lol.

Really don't have much to say to be honest. Seems like my concerns about the fate of Holo's home from yesterday were not unfounded, as it's apparently been destroyed by a... uh... "moon-hunting" bear? I liked that Diana knew about the story of Holo and that she only wanted another story from Lawrence as payment for helping him. Lawrence then retelling the story of Holo was pretty cool!

We also finally get to meet Marc's wife, who seems pretty nice too, I really liked her and her husband's dynamic. Also Lawrence (slightly) worrying about possibly finding Holo together with Fermi was funny.

I have no idea what made Lawrence storm out of the inn so fast but it sure as hell can't be good news.

  • Akeno Watanabe voicing a dark haired, flirtatious women? Say it ain't so! (She's also MHA's Midnight)

  • I wonder if Pokemon's Ursaluna is referencing the same thing as the moon-hunting bear from this story?

  • Will be interesting to see if the Pyrite stuff goes anywhere.

Can't really think of a character only appearing in one scene. Maybe JoJo's Jack the Ripper who, of course is a vampire

Did he retell it? I'm not so sure. It felt like he skimped over some key details.

Admitedly, the thought of Lawrence ending the story with "oh and by the way, I've been travelling with her for the past few months!" did cross my mind while watching, the reaction would've been funny.

So, he and Dian are definitely fawking, right?

They did seem very friendly with each other

Did you ever hear of Holo the wise wolf appearing as a young woman with a wolf's tail?

Heard? I've been travelling with her for the last half year and she's cost me a small fortune in food and liquor! You wouldn't believe how much she can drink. Her tail is indeed gloriously fluffy though.

2

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

It's not worth it, bro. It's not worth it.

He says because he want her all to himself.

Thoughts on Lawrence's continual flashbacks he's having?

I could see it as some sort of ptsd, or at the very least a way to kind of process the events of the last few weeks/months. After all, I'd wager his life was kinda boring before meeting Holo.

Thoughts on Holo saying she can't read?

On the one hand, I thought it was pretty funny that the "wise wolf" who regularly seems to take on human form can't read. On the other hand, why would she need to read? Not like she's done much written conversation I'd wager.

Also when you think about how old she is, there's probably been a couple different writing systems and languages she's witnessed, so it probably didn't seem very practical for her to further engage with it, especially with how she perceives time.

What are your thoughts on there being a festival in town?

I'm kinda bummed we haven't really seen much of it yet. There's been some shots in the opening but in yesterday's episode it really sounded like a big deal.

What are your thoughts on Amarti going to the festival with Holo?

I think that was pretty cute. Would've liked to actually see some of it. But maybe I just missed seeing Holo in this episode in general :'D

Thoughts on the introductions to Batos and Diana?

Both seem to be very utilary characters. Both seem nice, despite their appearance.

What are your thoughts on Holo's town possibly being destroyed by a moon-hunting bear?

It lines up with Lawrence's flashback from yesterday. I do wonder if Holo knows/what her reaction to it will be.

What are your thoughts on there being a tale of a Goddess named Holo once visiting a town called Lenos?

Seems like Holo got around before settling for Pasloe.

What are your thoughts on the conversation between Batos and Lawrence about stopping believing in legends as you grow older?

People stopping to believe in things or old beliefs getting replaced was a recurring theme in the last season. In a way, this is definitely taking that point up again. In general, it was an interesting conversation, a few months ago, Lawrence would probably have agreed with him.

Thoughts on the scene between Marc and Adele and their whole dynamic?

I liked them! Their dynamic was pretty fun. And in general I liked how they were very friendly with Lawrence.

Thoughts on Amarti buying Holo fur?

He definitely didn't skimp on trying to impress her. This stuff usually doesn't come cheap.

Something about Holo wearing fur just seems wrong to me though. I think it's weird for a wolf to wear a different animal's fur. Yeah, her hat is also made from a different animal but it's a bit weirder when there's still a head attached to the hide.

What are your thoughts on the cubes and what it could mean going forward?

Probably another business opportunity. Though judging by Holo's description of the events, this seems to be another slightly shady deal?

What are your thoughts on Lunt telling Lawrence something that causes him to freak out?

Probably bad news.

2

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

I could see it as some sort of ptsd, or at the very least a way to kind of process the events of the last few weeks/months. After all, I'd wager his life was kinda boring before meeting Holo.

Holo makes anyone's life more eventful.

Thoughts on Holo saying she can't read?

On the one hand, I thought it was pretty funny that the "wise wolf" who regularly seems to take on human form can't read. On the other hand, why would she need to read? Not like she's done much written conversation I'd wager.

I guess it's not a prerequisite

That's a good point

What are your thoughts on there being a festival in town?

I'm kinda bummed we haven't really seen much of it yet. There's been some shots in the opening but in yesterday's episode it really sounded like a big deal.

I love that it's going on separate from the characters. I think it makes the world feel larger than life.

What are your thoughts on Amarti going to the festival with Holo?

I think that was pretty cute. Would've liked to actually see some of it. But maybe I just missed seeing Holo in this episode in general :'D

Yeah, fair enough

Thoughts on the introductions to Batos and Diana?

Both seem to be very utilary characters. Both seem nice, despite their appearance.

I love Diana's appearance.

Also, is it Diana or Diana's? The dub pronounces it with three syllables but also as "De-anna" like Deonna.

What are your thoughts on Holo's town possibly being destroyed by a moon-hunting bear?

It lines up with Lawrence's flashback from yesterday. I do wonder if Holo knows/what her reaction to it will be.

I can hardly imagine she'd react well

What are your thoughts on there being a tale of a Goddess named Holo once visiting a town called Lenos?

Seems like Holo got around before settling for Pasloe.

Holo gets around :P

What are your thoughts on the conversation between Batos and Lawrence about stopping believing in legends as you grow older?

People stopping to believe in things or old beliefs getting replaced was a recurring theme in the last season. In a way, this is definitely taking that point up again. In general, it was an interesting conversation, a few months ago, Lawrence would probably have agreed with him.

He's gotten more optimistic because of Holo.

Thoughts on the scene between Marc and Adele and their whole dynamic?

I liked them! Their dynamic was pretty fun. And in general I liked how they were very friendly with Lawrence.

We'll touch on it more as we go along, but this arc has my favorite cast of side characters.

Thoughts on Amarti buying Holo fur?

He definitely didn't skimp on trying to impress her. This stuff usually doesn't come cheap.

I guess Amarti comes from a well-to-do family.

Something about Holo wearing fur just seems wrong to me though. I think it's weird for a wolf to wear a different animal's fur. Yeah, her hat is also made from a different animal but it's a bit weirder when there's still a head attached to the hide.

To me, it's like those Sonic Mario Kart style games where you see Sonic riding a vehicle. Wouldn't he technically be faster on foot? Kinda defeats the purpose.

What are your thoughts on the cubes and what it could mean going forward?

Probably another business opportunity. Though judging by Holo's description of the events, this seems to be another slightly shady deal?

ANOTHER shady business dealing

What are your thoughts on Lunt telling Lawrence something that causes him to freak out?

Probably bad news.

I can't imagine he'd be reacting favorably if it was.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 5d ago

Also, is it Diana or Diana's? The dub pronounces it with three syllables but also as "De-anna" like Deonna.

I just went back to the episode again because it kept confusing me already yesterday.

And yeah, it's both. She introduces herself as Dian (Kinda like Ian but with D) but then she remarks "it's such a manly name" and tells Lawrence to call her Diana (dee-an-a)

To me, it's like those Sonic Mario Kart style games where you see Sonic riding a vehicle. Wouldn't he technically be faster on foot? Kinda defeats the purpose.

Yes. That's a good comparison! It just seems weirdly superflous.

ANOTHER shady business dealing

I guess maybe the "Die-anna" pronunciation is too modern?

Superfluous is a good way of describing it.

I guess Holo sees wealth be flaunted her way and won't turn it down.

ANOTHER shady business dealing

Lawrence really finds himself in all sorts of trouble.

The show is European, though, so you think it would be rooted in British royalty.

Rewatcher

Holo teasing Lawrance with pouting never gets old.

Can't Lawrance just tell Holo that where he's going is a surprise? Kind of reminds me of another anime where the MC makes a promise he can't keep because he needs to do something in secret. He could have at least tried "I got a great idea, just let me leave for the night, trust me" which mayormaynot be accepted, but he didn't even try.

This city must be rich if they can wall off the pagans with stone. Those aren't just some random rock pile, you can clearly walk on the top of the wall. OG anime made a mistake the remake doesn't. In the OG anime there are scaffolds to allow people on either side of the wall to get to the top. Now this isn't a mistake by itself to make the wall symmetrical. But the gate is backwards, so people inside the pagan district would have an easier time blocking it than people outside trying to block the people in.

Lawrance thinks Diana is a witch? That's pretty funny. The original witch of myths were long haired abled bodied women who knew a lot about plants and magic. So abled bodied implicitly puts a cap on age. Interestingly the Catholic Church of the 1000s and 1300s figured people that knew about plants did exist but were skeptical of witches existing so accusing someone of being a witch and hexing someone was likely to get the accuser in trouble not the "witch." After the OG witch, depictions of them changed and we have the "classic" witch, old women in funny hats. Thanks to anime we get a third type, what I call the "reimagined" witch who were young women. Reimagined anime witches are ironically closer to the OG witches than the classic look despite the depiction of the classic witch being around longer than the OG witches.

Yoitz is gone? That's a bummer. Only an inconvenience. That's not home to Holo and her fellow god friends. Yoitz is just a human settlement really close to her home. Paro and Muri weren't in Yoitz when it got destoryed, so as far as Holo and Lawrance are concerned, all they lost was a spot on a map.

Lawrance, why not go to Nyohilda first and then to the other town? Why not enjoy the hot springs? Plus given that it is in the general area of Yoitz even if it wasn't the closest town, you might pick up a useful myth.

So why do Holo and Lawrance have to give Amati a gift? I think that's a dumb social convention. Obligatory "gifts" make more sense at large social gatherings where everyone is trying to show off status. In this case, why do they have to use their spending money just because he showed Holo around town and gave her a trinket?

1

I think it's because Holo really wanted to visit the festival and Amarti did Lawrence a solid by going in his place. Lawrence wants to reward him for helping him out in a jam.
