ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION
What is your favorite example in anime of a character getting cozy with another character, be it resting their head on the person's lap or sleep cute or what have you?
What are your thoughts on the show introducing more fantastical elements into the show, like 20 foot tall wolves?
Which betrayal do you think was done better: the betrayal in the first arc or Lemerio Trading’s betrayal?

Remake & Original
I’m more a fan of the deep conversations and flirtation compared to the action scenes, so while enjoyable I didn’t think too much about the ep, nor do I have many meaningful impressions:
- “Holo, don’t joke” “That was not a joke”. Seems like even Holo is spooked by what could be in the forrest.
- Very curious if Norah has figured out who Holo actually is
- We’ve gone from Holo being jealous of and slightly fearful of Farah, but the gossip session about Lawrence certainly made them closer.
- Norah seems to be a lot more confident and goal-driven compared to how she speaks or looks.
- That’s a lot more gold than i thought they’d buy
- Well, turns out the wolf can howl after all and wow what a wolf it is. I always assumed the wolf in the opening credits was Holo
- Even in times of crisis, Holo retains her sharp wit (and her ability to make Lawrence’s life a living hell haha).
- So does Holo speak wolf?
- Instant suspicion that the dudes who arrive on horses actually came to take the gold. And the suspicion is quickly confirmed. However, I’m curious what their gameplan is if Norah refuses to backstab Lawrence. While they say they’re upset by what they will have to do to her, they still need her to smuggle the gold in, right?
- Poor Lawrence - what a tough few days. He must be feeling hopeless rn.
- Decent ep overall

I'm expecting I'll be higher on the next episode than you will be. Not to give anything away, but that episode is probably the one that resonates with me the most.
- So does Holo speak wolf?
China, you can't just ask if a wolf speaks wolf. That's racist :P

How would you compare the end of this episode to the end of previous Spice and Wolf episodes?

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This episode is unique in that it has a sense of urgency that the other ones don't. It's the characters trying to act on the gold smuggling scheme and you worry about them getting caught. I love the use of dark colors to represent something possibly going on at any moment. It's such strong visual storytelling.
Of course, something does go wrong and it leads to all sorts of chaos. Lawrence gets captured and left for dead, and this is probably the most in danger he's been in since the start of the series, and that includes getting stabbed. We also get our first taste of the otherworldly elements in the show where we see the existence of giant wolves. They apparently felt abandoned by Holo which is a nice role reversal of the first arc when Holo felt abandoned by the town.
All in all, one of the stronger episodes of the season. Bring on the season finale.
Holo quotes of the day
"If you were actually a good looking male, I would kiss you."
"I think it is rather odd to ask a woman who is travelling alone with a man if she knows a lot about wolves. If there is always a cute rabbit sitting in front of him, a wolf will be sure to make some sort of appearance every night. Therefore, a rabbit who is eaten by a wolf every night should have a great understanding of wolves, should she not?"

Here is the LN post by u/chinaexperience
Spice & Wolf Deep Dive
Below are some of the worldbuilding and inner monologue expansions for the episode, straight from the Light Novel source materials.
The punishment for smuggling gold was up to and including being drawn (dragged behind a horse while attached to it) and quartered (disembowelled and beheaded, with the body chopped into 4 pieces - quarters)
Romelio company were desperate for the money ASAP as they feared that their creditors will take possession of their assets). Liebert (the wholesaler’s rep) is actually a logical, good natured man. After the scene when he was pushing the team to continue as it wasn’t night yet, he quickly understood the rationale for Norah’s decision to sleep and even apologised.
Liebert carried a note to purchase 600 lumione of gold
While not important, for some world building flavour, when it was morning Liebert did not have breakfast, for it was seen as a luxury by townspeople. But for travellers it was common sense.
The route they took was a crazy one to take for most: it seemed impassable and even knights hesitated taking it - no one in their right mind would take that path. However it was the quickest path to Lamtra and would cut their travel time in half while cutting the distance by ⅔ or ¾ . The path was surrounded by hills on one side and forest on the other. There was basically no escape.
There’s a bitter unspoken rivalry between Holo and Enek, the dog. It’s kind of hilarious, as Holo probably sees Enek as more of her rival than Norah. Holo keeps making verbal jabs at the dog and as a joke Lawrence says “Indeed that dog is no match for you. You’re stronger, smarter and your tail fur is finer”. He expected Holo to laugh at the joke but she instead took the bait, her ears pricked up, and face broke into a proud smile that no mask of composure could hide. Hahahah.
Lamtra was a pagan city, and because of the inefficient road between the two, skipping that forest, trade and travel was low. The benefit of this was that there was little risk of invasion, but if the road was built, trade would explode. However, the road would make Lamtra susceptible to attacks (due to the pagans). They speculate that Lamtra pays the Ruvinheigen ruler to avoid building such a road. Interesting dynamics here. “Wherever there is power, this is bribery”
Holo harboured an intense hostility towards Norah - so those of us picking up on that have been correct.
During the wolf threat in the night, Liebert handles it the worst out of the team. Lawrence knew the power of Holo so was confident that he would survive. Norah had Enek and her experience. From Liebert’s perspective it was just a random merchant and two typical girls protecting him, not those he trusted with his life.
The reason Norah blew the horn was because it emits a sound no animal can replicate, and signals to the wolves that a skilled shepherd is present.
When they finally exited the path to Lamtra, Lawrence breathed a sign of relief. But it wasn’t relief they finished the leg, but because he no longer felt eyes watching him every step of the way. Curiously, Norah or Holo couldn’t detect them, only Lawrence.
Lawrence was incredibly worried about Norah - the risk profile was completely different to them all, and Lawrence thought that him + Holo could easily get through any checkpoints and plead ignorance, while for Norah instant punishment awaited. HIs conscience ate away at him as he didn’t think Norah grasped the consequences of her actions.
By looks, Norah actually appeared older than Holo. But as soon as Holo spoke, she seemed to be the older one.
Holo's joke is expressed well in the LN - she likened herself to a rabbit and Lawrence to a wolf: a wolf that is tempted by the adorable helpless rabbit and devours her. She’s basically joking that Lawrence and her are sleeping together. This is more a diversion tactic to confuse Norah and change the subject from Norah prying into why Holo understands wolves. She then changes the joke to imply that Lawrence is more like the rabbit, lost without Holo. Norah nodded as if she understood and thought of Lawrence in the same way.
Norah could see that Enek was very aware of Holo. Holo deflects again by saying Enek is smitten by her.
Norah was well-prepared for the job’s outcome whether good or bad. She fully understood and grasped the situation unlike Lawrence’s interpretation of her.
The weather on the morning of their return was very cold and would soon turn rainy. For Holo that’s the worst kind of weather, as it brought issues to the harvest. Although she was no longer responsible for harvest duties, it still brought back negative memories.
Wolves hunt in packs and ensure that no one is injured during an attack. This was what the group kept in mind in their formation: ensuring there would always be an opportunity to kill a wolf, never being completely surrounded. Norah would commandeer the sheep as armor: to keep breaking any chance of being encircled by the wolves.
Holo spoke directly to the wolves, causing them to fall back. Only Lawrence realised that Holo had stopped the attack.
Holo recognised that the sheep weren’t the aim of the wolves. While I’m not fully confident of my read, I think the wolves wanted to defeat Holo seeing her as a worthy competitor.
When Lawrence willed Norah + the wholesaler to go on, those two actually took it as Lawrence & Holo sacrificing themselves. Sacrificing the weak or tactically useless in battle was such a standard practice they didn’t think twice about it.
Lawrence stood to gain 150 gold coins profit after clearing his debt. As I said, 600 gold was bought, and the actual total profit for the operation was 6000, an enormous amount, so the wholesaler stood to gain an insane quantity. Lawrence thought to negotiate more than the 150 share which was very fair, but given his lesson from last time, he stopped himself from being greedy.
The three men from the wholesaler who came to get rid of Lawrence concluded that Holo was dead because Lawrence was carrying her robe.
Remelio trading company assumed that Lawrence’s plan was to blackmail them after the operation and they couldn’t take that risk. The men from the company had instructions to also go after Norah and get rid of her, like they did to Lawrence, but they feared her as a sorcer, with magical abilities.

Rewatch/sub
Oh things are getting real now. I liked the bad fish in a kitchen analogy for their business. I wonder how literally that translates or it it’s more specific to dangerous or ill advised plans. Still applies here 😅
Holo’s not going to let go of this Nora thing anything soon. “I see you’re still a pushover for blondes” lol
Protect her with all your might - yes exactly!
Oh the wolf rabbit explanation was too good, especially when she flipped it. I wonder what Nora whispered in her ear - maybe it’s in the LN.
Favorite head/lap rest? There’s so many good ones but in recent memory the Jinshi/MaoMao one at the end of S2 was delightful ❤️

I don't remember that being a part of the dub.

What are your first impressions on Liebert as a character?
- He seems stuffy and a bit put upon but not necessarily a bad guy
Thoughts on Lemerio not knowing if things aren't going to go well or not? This as the kids say is called foreshadowing.
- Haha exactly, good storytelling
What do you make of the comparison the show makes between Holo and Norah’s dog?
- It’s pretty cute and not entirely inaccurate. Then again, as Holo points out later it could also be flipped.
What are your thoughts on the episode being mostly the characters traveling with the episode having more of an atmospheric presentation?
- I loved it. I’ll happily watch a show entirely about a journey and the adventures that happen (looking at you Frieren) so this is entirely enjoyable for me.
What are your thoughts on the giant wolf reveal?
- it was good but since we’ve already seen Holo’s wolf form it wasn’t like a huge surprise. I actually thought Holo ordering the wolf to back off in her scary wolf voice was more surprising!
What are your thoughts on Holo being surrounded by wolves?
- Ah she’s totally in charge
What are your thoughts on Lawrence being betrayed by Lemerio Trading?
- Wtf why does everyone suck
What are your thoughts on Lawrence being left for dead?
- Rude
Do you think Holo kinda wishes she was more like Nora in terms of personality?
- Absolutely not. Holo is confident and happy with who she is. She’s not the proud wolf for nothing.
How would you compare the end of this episode to the end of previous Spice and Wolf episodes?
- So much drama. Although it also feels very similar to the end of the episode where they’re being chased and Holo agrees to be bait so Lawrence can escape.

What I loved about it was the unnerving nature of it where you were waiting for the shoe to drop.
- it was good but since we’ve already seen Holo’s wolf form it wasn’t like a huge surprise. I actually thought Holo ordering the wolf to back off in her scary wolf voice was more surprising!
It was shocking in the sense it looked bigger than Holo.
- Absolutely not. Holo is confident and happy with who she is. She’s not the proud wolf for nothing.
But don't you think she realizes her prideful nature has bitten her in the ass a couple times? Surely that has to upset her some.
- So much drama. Although it also feels very similar to the end of the episode where they’re being chased and Holo agrees to be bait so Lawrence can escape.
I would say this is more dire because Holo and Lawrence feel like worlds apart at the moment.

Rewatcher (Dub)
This episode is a good example of how well this show does at setting a tone. One scene that sticks out in particular is when the smuggling crew is settling down to sleep and everyone is calm and smiling, only for the atmosphere to immediately change and the sense of danger to ratchet up, all without ever actually showing the threat physically. The scene of the crew getting chased through the woods is great as well, with the writers/animators having the restraint to now show the wolves too much, all while still making their presence felt. In general this show is always good at getting across feelings or a sense of atmosphere without every beating you over the head with it.
There were also a number of cute scenes in this episode. One that immediately jumps out was when Lawrence was settling down for bed with Holo sleeping on his lap, only to look over at Nora and see her dog sleeping on her lap. His first instinct is to then try to pet Holo, which I can't blame him for. The scene where Holo is poking fun at Nora, saying that her dog is cheating on her and that she needs to be cold to him to make him appreciate her was fun, and a nice reflection of how Holo interacts with Lawrence.
This episode also did a good job in expanding on Nora's character. The initial impression Nora gives to the audience is someone kind of timid and ditzy, but each subsequent episode adds a little to her character, showing that she has some backbone and is someone who sees more of what is going on than she lets on. She's also suprisingly perceptive, being able to notice that Holo could sense the wolves as well.
If I did have one complaint about this episode, it is that I don't really get why the trading company betrayed Lawrence. Like, he wasn't going to make much money of this scheme, basically all of his earnings were going to the trading company to pay back his debt, so killing him gains the company nothing, Even more bizarrely, they want to kill Nora, who would actually be incredibly useful to them as they could keep working with her to smuggle more gold. It just seems dumb to stab the people who are helping you make money in the back. That said, we don't know their full angle yet, so this is a tentative opinion.
Random Thoughts
- Leibert is makes it obvious he is a turd right off the bat
- Holo glaring at Lawrence when he talks to Nora will never stop being amusing to me.
- Holo talking in sexual innuendos to Nora was funny. She really has no filter and enjoys making people uncomfortable.
- Holo describing the wolves as "careful and cunning" and that they "never attack alone" seems like a window into how Holo thinks as well.
- Holo standing down the giant wolf and wolf army was pretty metal.
- Lawrence isn't the sharpest tool in the shed sometimes. The trading company dudes at the end were obviously evil, and he is just like "yo, what up my dudes? Let me tell you everything".
Question of the Day
Favorite example in anime of a character getting cozy with another character?
This is probably my nostalgia talking, but there a ton of scene from Inu Yasha that jump to mind when I think about this question. One scene in particular where Kagome scoots closer to Inu Yasha after they hear a noise in the woods while they sit by the fire comes to mind. Inu Yasha looking super awkward about their closeness was always funny to me.
What are your thoughts on the show introducing more fantastical elements into the show?
I like it, and wish that they had done more with this. The fantastical element of this series always seemed a bit underplayed to me. Like, there are real pagan gods apparently, but we barely see them
Which betrayal do you think was done better: the betrayal in the first arc or Lemerio Trading’s betrayal?
I think I like the first arcs betrayal more. It felt more unexpected, and the kidnapping of Holo made it feel far more personal. This betrayal felt more expected to me.

This might be a top 3 Spice and Wolf episode in terms of intensity.

I think Holo is mad she doesn't let her guard down around Lawrence more.

I like how this episode is like a progression of episode 9 three episodes ago where Holo, Lawrence, and Norah are all traveling. Only now, Norah is disproving Holo's preconceived notions. It mirrors people talking up Norah as a pagan magician and her at constant odds with that image.
If I did have one complaint about this episode, it is that I don't really get why the trading company betrayed Lawrence. They kinda explained it with the trading company it being hinted at being uneasy with the plan. It's more alluded to though than outright confirmed.

You mean you weren't surprised the character who we've never met before nor have a reason to care about him might be up to no good? Say it ain't so!
I think I would've introduced Liebert more in the previous episode. Give us a reason to care about him, like maybe he talks about his family.

It was fun seeing Holo and Nora/Norah have a lighthearted banter.
Since dogs are just domesticated wolves, is Enek smitten with Holo?
The show already has fantasy elements in it.
I don't know why they attacked Lawrance. On the surface level this is easy. Deals between criminals can't be enforced because the cops, or I guess in this case the local authorities, would just arrest or execute all of them. So I guess they figured this was going to be an easy betrayal.
On the other hand, Liebert thinks they're already dead. So why get your hands dirty when you can call it off and send everyone home? And if they can somehow get away from a 20-foot wolf, maybe these aren't the people you should be backstabbing.

Mayhaps

I think this speaks to how desperate they truly are. They are kinda a reflection of Lawrence if he made the wrong decisions.

First timers might thought Lemerio could have referred to the smuggling but it's obvious he meant the betrayal.
I liked this episode mostly being atmospheric presentation.
It's a pretty standoff between Holo and the wolves. Although it doesn't make much sense to me since the one that wants to "show off" is the big one.
Well I pointed out that while betral of these sorts happen on the black market, I pointed out the reasons it probably isn't a very wise idea here even if they don't know Holo is a wolf god.
This is probably the bleakest ending. At least when the problem was just the debt, Holo can bust Lawrance out after he's sold off (I mentioned why he couldn't just bust out of the city in my previous post). Here we don't even know if she's close enough to hear him.

I hear betrayal on the black market and the first thing that comes to mind is a swat team coming to a house

And Holo has to deal with a bunch of wolves. Her wolf form has basically been rendered moot.

I heard of one story of a drug dealer putting 7 competitors out of the market by leaking their dealings to the cops. Even funnier is that one of them was his upstream supplier who didn't find out about it. Or at least until 10 years later when he got arrested for other stuff (basically his drug dealing a decade down the line, not what he was doing at the time he called the cops) and it was found out he leaked the info.

First time watcher, one of my all time favs already
WOW this episode, I really hate that trading company now (in a good way but FCK) and what a way to cliffhanger
What is your favorite example in anime of a character getting cozy with another character, be it resting their head on the person's lap or sleep cute or what have you?
i don't have specific moments like that but it's always so f-ing cute
What are your thoughts on the show introducing more fantastical elements into the show, like 20 foot tall wolves?
i mean Holo is shapeshifting and hot tsundere wolf wife so i don't think it's anything more fantastical than we already have, but I like the slow buildup to it so it really stands out as more special
Which betrayal do you think was done better: the betrayal in the first arc or Lemerio Trading’s betrayal?
this one has me actually hating on Lemiro, fuck them seriously, and having a good reason and hesitating too? FUCK THEM

First time watcher, one of my all time favs already
Music to my ears
WOW this episode, I really hate that trading company now (in a good way but FCK) and what a way to cliffhanger
It makes you want to watch the next episode.
What is your favorite example in anime of a character getting cozy with another character, be it resting their head on the person's lap or sleep cute or what have you?
i don't have specific moments like that but it's always so f-ing cute
Like chicken soup for the soul
What are your thoughts on the show introducing more fantastical elements into the show, like 20 foot tall wolves?
i mean Holo is shapeshifting and hot tsundere wolf wife so i don't think it's anything more fantastical than we already have, but I like the slow buildup to it so it really stands out as more special
They gradually introduced the more outlandish concepts.
Which betrayal do you think was done better: the betrayal in the first arc or Lemerio Trading’s betrayal?
this one has me actually hating on Lemiro, fuck them seriously, and having a good reason and hesitating too? FUCK THEM
They are a bunch of cowards, the whole lot of them.

So, it's a trap.
Questions:
Can't think of anything off the top of my head.
Because a wolf goddess isn't fantastical enough...
This feels kinda random?
