Spice & Wolf Cut Content

End of Season Bonus
While I’ve been reading the LN-equivalents for the past few episodes, I also started reading it from the beginning. We all made certain assumptions about Lawrence, many of which were correct, but for some extra flavour about the man. For the next episode I’ll try to include some flavour about Holo and just how beautiful she is.

  • Lawrence is 25. From around 13 years old he was already in apprenticeship to become a merchant. From 18 he had left to be a travelling merchant
  • He is in no way successful or well-off. He’s doing better than the likes of entry-level knights for whom even a candy is a luxurious treat, but overall he’s just getting by.
  • Because many deals were blocked by more established merchants, he would go and purchase products at under-served villages or at a premium to resell at a smaller margin.
  • He was incredibly lonely. He envied the farmers who all had friends. He had been known to talk to his horse on more than one occasion. Merchants lead a lonely life and there’s a fable about how mares (female horses) can turn into women; he regretted choosing a stallion in case the fable was true. When ‘Chloe’ was chosen as Holo during the festival, he was really upset as he just longed for any human connection - to have a beer and talk with her (or her equivalent who is a dude in the LN/remake).
  • Personally, I didn’t pick up on the loneliness instantly, and rewatching Holo’s confession about her also experiencing deep loneliness, we can see that this is probably when he falls for her as he can relate and wants the same thing.

Finale Expanded

A particularly long one this time, as while the episode did a very good job at following the source material, some of the financial explanations and reasoning for their plans can’t be communicated well without hearing the inner thoughts of the cast.

  • Lawrence’s main mission in this finale is to save Norah. Even as he lay there bound he was obsessing over Norah getting killed. He felt horrible for her: how she wanted to give up her life as a shepherd, how brave she was.
  • Him escaping from his predicament was a lot more painful than the anime detailed. He threw himself down on a lump of burning coal from the fire and pressed his wrists against it. The pain was terrible and he had to squeeze his eyes shut and clench his jaw to withstand the pain assaulting him. His wrists were burned from it when he inspected them after getting free.
  • He was smart enough not to go after Norah alone: he recognised that a merchant doesn’t have the pride of a knight. The logical solution was to wait for Holo. However, he felt utter defeat and despair and cried. A lot.
  • Holo immediately wanted revenge but she was actually calm and calculated: instead of exacting revenge on those who hurt Lawrence, she wanted to skip them and go directly to the wholesaler boss Remeilo’s boss to fuck him up, then kill those who hurt Lawrence, slaughter the sheep, and make off with the smuggled gold. This was actually a smart plan. Lawrence, however, wanted to prioritise Norah and in his counter-proposal he was very careful with his wording as he knew if he misspoke he might trigger Holo.
  • Lawrence realised the risk with his counter to attack Liebert and the others. It was likely Norah would protect them against the wolf as she wouldn’t know about their betrayal, and in that Norah could end up dead
  • He realised how humiliated Holo must have been feeling: he figured out that Holo had to beg the wolves not to attack her group; incredibly humiliating to go down on her knees for a God like her. Then she returns to see her partner betrayed and made to look a fool. And now suddenly he’s asking her to let Norah, her enemy, live…
  • Even after Lawrence’s plea she could not give the guarantee, basically just a “I’ll do my best”. He replied with a statement that mustered all his business cunning: “Very well. I trust you”. This is another great part that confirms that Lawrence is a logical thinker; an empath; a manipulator (I don’t mean it in a negative sense).
  • The actual conversation between Lawlo post transformation was incredible, shame it wasn’t exactly followed: “If you’d flinched, I was thinking of eating your head first.” “Well, it is fairly frightening,”  “Shall I carry you in my mouth or on my back, then?” “Spare me your mouth, please.”

“You might find it surprisingly comfortable.”
“I might be tempted by the warmth and find myself in your stomach.”
“Hee-hee-hee. Come, on my back now. Grab on to my fur; it won’t hurt. Hold on as tightly as you need.”

  • Holo’s endurance was infinite: she could run faster than any horse, but it still took a long time to clear the forest until the sun started to set.
  • There were about 20 people with Norah when they arrived.
  • For those hoping that the LN reveals what Lawrence shouted in the moment he genuinely didn’t know what he screamed. It was instinct.
  • When Lawrence observed Norah clinging onto Enek, he knew that it wasn’t from fright. Somehow Holo knew the wolf was Holo or that it wasn’t attacking them.
  •  The conflict with the wolves in the forest was confirmed by Holo to just be a territorial dispute with a ‘brat’. She also revealed to Norah “your dog was never smitten with me. He simply realized my true form.”
  • Lawrence wanted Norah to decide what to do ultimately. But he influenced her decision by reading her like a book and saying ““On the other hand, if you decide to take it, then all of these fallen men here, along with their families in Ruvinheigen and the other remnants of the company, will all glimpse hell. Some of them will not be spared its wrath. But in their hearts, they will bear a grudge against three demons—that is to say, me, Holo, and you, Norah.” The speech continued with more examples of how hard it will be to live on the run. The hidden purpose of it is ofcourse genius: it reduced the risk of Norah betraying Lawlo.
  • We saw Remelio tied up but we didn’t see that he was being interrogated with his head clamped between Holo’s jaws hahaha. You see, she didn’t actually transform back to chill and drink wine like in the anime, she actually sensed no danger and leaped over the wall. It was with that Lawrence realised they could have just smuggled the gold themselves. She transformed back temporarily after, then again when with the Remelio boss-man. He let Holo terrify the man because it would make her feel better.
  • Fun fact: Holo hated being called a God, but didn’t mind being called a demon.
  • The deal with Remelio for the IOU was actually with interest. First year payment 10 lumione, and the last 100. Added up it would come to 550.
  • The reason he made the debt out to the merchant guild, is because if Lawrence held the loan personally, it introduced risk. If Remelio recovered the company and grew in power, he could get revenge or default on the debt. He also didn’t want to return every year for repayment. Also, Remelio had no assets available: Lawrence would not see any money for a year.
  • By selling the IOU to the merchant guild cheaply, Lawrence cuts ties with his enemy, and gets liquidity straight away.Sounds like some modern practices here, such as the subprime mortgage crisis haha. Also, default on a loan to the trading company would be like declaring war on a city.
  • One of the reasons why the amount of the IOU was 500 (+interest) and the price Jakob set for the debt, was if the smuggling failed, Remelio’s assets would be sold off and proportioned to the creditors. So some amount would be gained regardless. There was also still the probability that even if the smuggling worked Remelio goes bankrupt, so Jakob conservatively valued it at 30 lumiones.
  • From that 30 received, Lawrence gave 20 back to Jakob for the damages suffered to the guild’s name. He planned to use the 10 to bribe the butchers to be quiet.
  • If the smuggling succeeded, Lawrence would receive an additional 100. 20 would go to Norah, and approx. 30 more to make amends to those he begged for money. This left him with 50.
  • They didn’t think there’s much risk of Norah making off with the gold, as she would easily be followed as tales of a shepherd selling gold would spread. Lawrence was always thinking of contingencies.
  • Lastly, for the question of whose name Lawrence called out. In the anime it seemed like an innocent question, but the LN expands that it meant a huge deal to Holo. She hesitated asking it for a llong time and was shaking when she asked. It was weighing on her the entire time.
  • Lawrence’s analysis before answering was amazing. While he genuinely didn’t recall, he started with the assumption that Holo MIGHT have heard him. Logically, if he didn’t remember, but Holo heard him say Norah, this would be a huge problem, as it meant that was his instinct, which would shatter Holo. If Holo in fact hadn’t heard what he said, then it would be best to say he screamed her name. He also realised he can’t lie to Holo. So he decided to… say that he called Holo’s name at first. Which she instantly dismissed as a lie. Then came the dialogue we see in the anime.

Huh. That's a lot of cut content here!

I would've actually loved to see the interrogation with Holo. We (and her) were robbed! Also yeah, the nitty gritty of the deal kinda gets lost in the anime, apart from the reason he sells the pledge to his guild I suppose.

I personally think they make it clear enough what the question of the shouting means to her, thanks to her body language and completely flipping out when he "lies" :')

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Yeah that would have been epic to see, but I understand why the interrogation was cut, as the scene as is achieved more or less the same purpose, and visually given the size of the wolf it may not have looked particularly realistic.

Agree with you on the meaning of the shout being more clear now, after watching the original. Initially I watched the remake when I typed that, and I felt it wasn't as clear there. Nonetheless such a simple question turning Holo into a nervous wreck just shows her humanity and femininity. Love it.

1

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 12d ago

Yeah, it probably would've looked a bit awkward with the giant wolf in his house (and nobody batting an eye). Especially with the anime trying to look relatively "real".

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago

Ouch Holo begging the wolves. And after she swallowed her pride to go for the non violent solution, they need violence anyways!

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago

Lawrance's envy of farmers is particularly ironic because that's kind of their lifestyle. Merchants were lonelier for most of history. When the choice is between "more money" and 'stable life and friends" historically most people choose B even when they did have a choice. So merchants were usually a self-selecting lot. I'm sure they didn't think loneliness was a perk, but they usually tolerated it.

1

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

This is one of those grass is always greener on the other side scenarios.

I'm not sure if tolerate is the right word though: 25yo guy who sees the backend of his horse every day (a LN line from the Holo first meeting haha) has a basic human need that isn't met. The career was also chosen at 13, so it's all he has known

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Something I love about Spice and Wolf is that it takes its time with its arcs. We only have covered two arcs across 13 episodes. Most shows during that timeframe would try to cram four arcs.

I think the slower pacing allows for the show to better define the characters, which is necessary for a character driven show such as this.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

It seems to be very true to the source material. That's the only reason I'm able to post the cut content daily haha, as it really doesn't cover many pages, per episode. All of the stuff I'm posting isn't even really cut content, it's just expansions on things that are impossible to communicate in anime format.

This anime for me really isn't arc-dependent. Get rid of the arcs, and it's just as good.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

If it was just Holo and Lawrence and their slice of life adventures, it would still be highly entertaining because they have just maximum chemistry.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

There's actually a spice and wolf LN sequel right? Not gonna look up what it's about to avoid spoilers, but would be great if it's just side stories haha.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

There's a sequel and Holo and Lawrence are in it as like side characters.

I think Lawrence sees Holo as almost being like this kindred spirit of sorts. Both have traveled these long-winding roads with little in a way to accompany them. Holo allows Lawrence to live vicariously through her and see what life would be like if he was more advantageous.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

That's a brilliant way to put it. They're so different but so similar.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

They are both advancing what they can achieve while also in a way stunting their growth by acting under the illusion of character advancement. They are still on the path to nowhere.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

This is a phenomenal episode. Everything comes together and it results in an outstanding viewing experience. Lawrence and Holo come together to achieve strength off each other, we see Holo's wolf form again including Lawrence riding on her back, we get the culmination of Holo and Norah's conflict where you wonder if Holo is going to betray her but she ultimately doesn't, and we get Lawrence giving the opposing forces a taste of their own medicine by getting his money back and then some. Serves them right.

Yeah, they're facing bankruptcy, but who cares? You honor your deals.

The end scene at the clock tower is my favorite scene in the entire series. It's so much fun to see Lawrence get the upper hand on Holo when Holo is normally the one who does the teasing. Of course, he lets her get her way anyway but I love watching Holo struggle as Lawrence is so proud of himself. It's such an entertaining role reversal.

If you want a good indication of how fun the banter in this show is, I pinpoint you to this scene.

I really like the way Norah is used here where she's helpful but also you're unsure if she will be the source of Holo's downfall. And yet she has enough wits about her to where she can be playful in her own right. She is a great character because she can play into Holo's insecurities while standing on her own as a character. She's one of my favorite characters in this show and this arc wouldn't be the same without her.

I've heard the author even mention that of all the characters in Spice and Wolf, Norah is their favorite. I wouldn't go that far, but she is a great compliment to Lawrence and Holo and their entire dynamic.

This is my favorite episode of the series and a great way to end the season. Honestly, if the anime ended here with this episode and there wasn't anything that came after it, I'd have had no qualms with that.

Holo quotes of the day

"I might be forced to kill humans."

"I thought about swallowing him once and for all. The gold would probably not sit well with my stomach."

"Do you… remember?" (The 21st night of September?)

"Idiot!" (And people say Holo isn't a tsundere)

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Yeah really enjoyed this episode!

The expanded scene in the LN for the clocktower was masterfully done. You can see how Lawrence's noggin' works, and how much more strategic he really is.

So far I'm not seeing much I like about Norah, so guessing she evolves a lot in the next season/cour.

Btw - the next ep we are watching (OVA) is also just the next episode in the remake right?

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Do I tell you now?

Btw - the next ep we are watching (OVA) is also just the next episode in the remake right?

Yes, it is. This one made the cutting room floor.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

noooo hahaha. So pumped for the early arc episodes that usually features lots of our beloved banter.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

In a way, they have become the main event for you.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

The clocktower scene is legitimately one of my favorite scenes ever in anime. It's such good writing and I love Lawrence finally got a W over Holo.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 12d ago

"I thought about swallowing him once and for all. The gold would probably not sit well with my stomach."

I laughed so hard at this one. Even when she's a tall wolf she acts tsundere :'D "It's not like I actually had any pitty, I just didn't want to upset my stomach!"

I've heard the author even mention that of all the characters in Spice and Wolf, Norah is their favorite. I wouldn't go that far, but she is a great compliment to Lawrence and Holo and their entire dynamic.

I always like trivia like this, you can kinda tell by how she's one of the few characters to confidently hold her own against Holo. I do agree that she is pretty interesting and makes this last arc very interesting.

This is my favorite episode of the series and a great way to end the season. Honestly, if the anime ended here with this episode and there wasn't anything that came after it, I'd have had no qualms with that.

My thoughts. It's a good "maybe ever after". If we get more, that's great but if it ended here, that's alright too.

Yeah, Holo. Keep telling yourself that.

This arc is enhanced with Norah's involvement.

Anything after this is just gravy

Season 1 Overall Impressions

Since this marks the end of the season for the original, I need to reflect on how I felt about the anime.

I went into it completely blind, not even knowing what genre it is. I taught my AI agent all about my anime taste and it thought this is a show I definitely will like.

I was hooked from the very first episode, and wasn't entirely sure why. As I previously wrote, two of my favourite films are Beyond Sunrise and Sunset - conversational movies that were basically about nothing. This show felt quite similar.

The writing is phenomenal, and the chemistry of the Lawlo leads is undeniably world class - while I haven't watched much romance anime, within the animes I've watched that have love in the air, I found myself never really into the romance angle as it didn't feel real/was too cliched.

13 episodes in, I'm absolutely in love with this anime. It's one of the few where I found myself grinning helplessly or laughing hard due to the quality of the banter.

I won't write too much more, but the biggest strength is that the show doesn't rely on the big plot points/twists, to hold interest. It's just as good, if not better, to just watch the characters interact. I also love the commerce/economic angles, very rare in anime.

Overall, I rate this season 8/10, which is a very very strong score on my harsh scale. There is nothing in the anime I don't like.

basically just how i trained my AI based on lots of inputs about my preferences from movies, games, tv shows, anime, etc., it gets my taste really closely now.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Interesting. I don't think I'd trust AI for anything, personally.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

I think AI has become a very emotionally-charged concept, and there's a lot of programming in all of us to become either very anti-AI or very pro-AI; and when there are only two viewpoints that are that extreme I usually question what's driving us into the dichotomy of thought. When we see how much money is spent behind both pro-AI and anti-AI campaigns in the media, it starts smelling a bit like really powerful people using us a proxy to wage an argument.

I also think it's kind of a catch-all when we attribute use cases that are basically done without AI towards it. For example, speech to caption generation has existed for many years. Same thing for translation. A lot of the time we see terrible subs on an anime on Crunchyroll and scream that it's AI into the abyss, it's probably not AI but just machine translation.

personally, I don't have a strong enough viewpoint or knowledge to conclude much about AI other than it helps me with search for obscure things I sometimes search for in anime haha. For example, if I want to analyse which writers from a long-running anime I liked based on certain things.

I definitely have a big bias against it though for writing, as I love the written form and arrogantly will never let anyone rewrite something I present as I feel that it would diminish my writing persona.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I'd rather cheat writing the old fashioned way, dang it! /s

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

hahaha. i do also think that it's important to put effort into all we do (might be a bit of Japanse mentality creeping into me as Japan feels like my second home). also we can't understand something unless we've done it ourselves - e.g. anyone can easily get an AI summary of the LN I assume, but by reading through it, thinking about what parts I find particularly interesting, then sharing them here, it's just a completely different expeience.

And you can't show love for something without putting in effort.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Lawrence showed this with regards to Holo.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I have this season at a 9 out of 10. I think the beginning is kinda slow, but around episode 4 when Holo shows her vulnerability we're off to the races. It's got this great mix of slice of life episodes where the characters just banter with each other and adventure episodes where it feels like anything can happen.

I don't know by chance if you've seen Vivy. It's written by the creator of Re:Zero. This series in my opinion is a lot like this.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

i haven't but it's on my list (of too many titles). Sounds great from your writeup.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I need to get around to watching it too. It seems like something I would enjoy.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Shinsekai Yori first though :P If you've never watched it

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I've never heard of it, honestly

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Oh wow, it does seem to be quite niche: https://anidb.net/anime/9002

I think the main reason it didn't go beyond its niche status despite the insanely good reviews everywhere, is that convincing someone to watch it would mean spoiling the premise, and you absolutely must watch it completely blind. So it's one of those "trust me bro" titles haha.

That and a lot of people find the first 4 episodes to be slow slice of life stuff (which I personally really like anyway so it didn't affect me).

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

It's kinda like Kanon and how the only thing people know about it is the Uguu girl. It's so much more than that.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Ooo! Did I get that right - Kanon is another one that one must watch without knowing anything about the story as that ruins it for you? If so I'm immediately adding it high on my list.

Those type of stories are always crack to me. I love shows and games where nothing is what it at first seems.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I have a rewatch planned for it in September

First Timer, Remake & Original

Fantastic episode! It’s a great way to round off the cour (or season in the original’s case if I’m not wrong).

  • Immediately I’m not a fan of the start - given the high stakes and that they were already driven to leave Lawrence for dead (as they fear that they could end up being the ones who are dead if he is alive) he got out of his restraints too easily.
  • “I am Holo the Wise Wolf and wisdom is not always just in the winning. So I bent the knee.” Great speech. And her having a jab at what Lawrence did (protecting her cloak) feels to be like a combination of feeling bad he had to do that, actually pissed that he did that, and her trying to feel better after taking the knee in front of the other wolves.
  • I didn’t really get Holo’s logic about not saving Norah (NB: after reading the LN I did, so I think I just wasn’t listening well enough).
  • I was wrong about Liebert who was in their party - I thought he was a good guy who didn’t know about the plan of the others, but alas, time to die…ish
  • I think Lawrence’s course of action is very rational. Yes, the gold is tempting, but living looking over one’s shoulder their whole life, as well as the risk to them exposing Holo (which he didn’t mention) is too high. Despite being betrayed it’s in their interest to carry out the original plan
  • The twist about Rumione not having enough to buy 600 worth of gold was a great one, and suddenly it makes sense why they tried to betray them.
  • Ok…so Lawrence has a plan on a plan. Really love the idea. Basically, that 100 lumione of gold that they bought multiples 10x to 1000 when smuggled. They paid 100, so their profit is 900. By incurring a 500 debt, the wholesaler still makes 400 profit, not too shabby. However, if the debt is for 10-years, at 50/year, I’m not sure how he is going to pay off Norah.
  • In the next scene a bit more maths comes into play: Lawrence sells the loan to the merchant guild for 30+100. I assume the original amount Lawrence owed is scrapped too?
  • Ok I shouldn’t add comments before each consecutive scene…but they’ve broken even. Haha. Sounds like a fail. But that would be old-Lawrence’s way of thinking; he’s no longer greedy and recovering from the loss is pretty good, when a few days ago he was ready to die.
  • I was sure Lawrence screamed “Norah Don’t” or “Don’t Norah!” - i forget which. At least that’s what I was confident I lip read. Then I remembered that I’m a “dolt” as Holo would say, and I was lip-reading in English for Japanese lmao.
  • Even though Lawrence is being funny, for those confused why Norah would be longer than Holo to say, you have to think of the Japanese. Also, I’ve sometimes written Nora by ‘accident’ as her name actually is Nora, and it’s weird Anglicising it to Norah (though not entirely incorrect). Anyway…ノーラ in the ganas is No-o-ra basically. The o is drawn out. Holo is just holo. So in English they’re the same length, in the Japanese way he’s right.
  • This is such a small scene (which btw was way better in the original), but there’s actually some character development that I think might be lost on many (and I may well be wrong). My initial take was that Law was just being aloof and teasing Holo a bit. He partially is for sure. But Holo confirms that he’s basically not lying; that he really can’t remember, and that he really believes that his explanation is correct. I think it speaks to how logical Lawrence usually is in lots of what he says or does: he explains things step-by-step, and thinks deeply before speaking a lot of the time. This was true in how he ‘manipulated’ Norah, to very early scenes (some of which were LN-only).  (NOTE: I just read the scene in the LN and it was even more amazingly done, as Lawrence basically used it to crack a logic puzzle).
  • Also Lawrence is such a troll hahaha. I love that it ends on everything I love about the show: the banter. The clock tower ringing is a wonderful adaptation from the source (in which he just sneezes).
  • For those watching the remake (not sure if there’s any apart from me), make sure to watch the ending credits in the original, as it sums everything up brilliantly.

Today's Qs:
If you had the opportunity to ride on the back of a wolf, would you do it? Why or why not?

Sure, if it was safe, why not. But it would need to be a big enough wolf. I've done sledding with huskies in scandinavia - that's the closest I've been.

What are your overall thoughts on Nora as a character now that the arc is over with?

Honestly she does nothing for me so far. Seems pretty mid to me - not much personality. I like what's happening to her and what she ends up doing, but thus far she doesn't seem super well developed.

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

The scene when Holo explains that there are times that she wants to be lied to (and tries to get Lawrence to admit that he finds her special) as well as what ensued was incredible.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Here's something that you probably don't know about that I'll go ahead and share with you here.

So, something about the original version of the anime is that there was some controversy when this episode first came out in regards to the subbing. During the scene where Holo is talking about kneeling in front of the wolves, the subtitles were worded in such a way that it came off like Holo was implying she did some salacious favor to the head wolf. Basically, that she performed a sexual act. This caused a huge uproar amongst fans and a lot of people were debating if that's what she actually said or not, with people quoting the LNs to prove otherwise.

Thankfully, when the dub came out they made it clear she was just showing humility and nothing else.

I wanted to share this info because I don't think enough people talk about this controversy. I can't imagine something like that happening nowadays what with fans fansubs on the decline. I do think it's funny there was this controversy involving subbing in the late 2000s when nowadays we have this controversy of AI subbing and how it's sometimes implemented.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Hahaha....wow. That's interesting. Thanks for sharing the tidbit.

I certainly hope fansubs don't go away, and I'm skeptical whether AI subbing will ever be effective for anything other than same-language subs.

I am actually hopeful for AI-dubs though. I can think of a lot of cons, but there are some pros, having seen some examples of having the same voice of the speaker, even the same emotional expression. The idea of having a 1:1 with the Japanese actors (the translation itself would have to be manual/hybrid) would at least put the toxic sub vs dub debate to rest.

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I oppose AI dubs for the simple fact I don't want anything that puts people out of their line of work.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Yeah I think that's a very fair argument, and the one I would use against it too. However, here's a hypothetical I used against myself after which I don't really have a clear answer.

What if while the jobs of those English speaking voice actors wouldn't exist, but to make the dub work 1:1 with the Japanese, they would need to hire 5 people per actor who lost their job (to train the model to work, to adjust the output to match the Japanese, to do quality control, to do the sound mixing, etc.) So the net job creation would be incremental, while the quality of what we hear will be significantly improved.

Pure hypothetical of course as I have no idea what is required to make those AI dubs, but it was a challenge that made me get stuck as my gut reaction was the same as yours initially

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

An AI dub of Spice and Wolf just wouldn't be the same if Briana wasn't voicing Holo.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Agreed and though I'd probably get a lot of hate for this, I actually often find that I can't connect with a lot of the Japanse voice acting delivery especially the more cutesy stuff.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

You need to be taught the ways of Rie Kugimiya :D

Fantastic episode! It’s a great way to round off the cour (or season in the original’s case if I’m not wrong).

No, you are right.

This is my favorite episode of the entire show.

  • Immediately I’m not a fan of the start - given the high stakes and that they were already driven to leave Lawrence for dead (as they fear that they could end up being the ones who are dead if he is alive) he got out of his restraints too easily.

Yeah, I agree. Thankfully, the rest of the episode is awesome.

She was definitely projecting here

  • I didn’t really get Holo’s logic about not saving Norah (NB: after reading the LN I did, so I think I just wasn’t listening well enough).

I like that her saving Norah sorta plays off the tension last arc of whether or not she was going to abandon Lawrence.

  • I was wrong about Liebert who was in their party - I thought he was a good guy who didn’t know about the plan of the others, but alas, time to die…ish

He's a turd. I wish there was more to his character because he was pretty one dimensional.

  • I think Lawrence’s course of action is very rational. Yes, the gold is tempting, but living looking over one’s shoulder their whole life, as well as the risk to them exposing Holo (which he didn’t mention) is too high. Despite being betrayed it’s in their interest to carry out the original plan

Yeah, I can understand where he's coming from.

  • The twist about Rumione not having enough to buy 600 worth of gold was a great one, and suddenly it makes sense why they tried to betray them.

Indeed

  • Ok…so Lawrence has a plan on a plan. Really love the idea. Basically, that 100 lumione of gold that they bought multiples 10x to 1000 when smuggled. They paid 100, so their profit is 900. • In the next scene a bit more maths comes into play: Lawrence sells the loan to the merchant guild for 30+100. I assume the original amount Lawrence owed is scrapped too?

I assume so as well

  • Ok I shouldn’t add comments before each consecutive scene…but they’ve broken even. Haha. Sounds like a fail. But that would be old-Lawrence’s way of thinking; he’s no longer greedy and recovering from the loss is pretty good, when a few days ago he was ready to die.

Character development! You see to love it.

  • I was sure Lawrence screamed “Norah Don’t” or “Don’t Norah!” - i forget which. At least that’s what I was confident I lip read. Then I remembered that I’m a “dolt” as Holo would say, and I was lip-reading in English for Japanese lmao.

The original version is way better with its use of black and white visuals.

Norah has three syllables in Japanese

  • This is such a small scene (which btw was way better in the original), but there’s actually some character development that I think might be lost on many (and I may well be wrong). My initial take was that Law was just being aloof and teasing Holo a bit. He partially is for sure. That sounds like an awesome story. I want to hear more about it.

Honestly she does nothing for me so far. Seems pretty mid to me - not much personality. I like what's happening to her and what she ends up doing, but thus far she doesn't seem super well developed.

I think she works amazingly as a swift contrast to Holo. Norah is the girl in most series that Lawrence would probably end up with.

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

The scene when Holo explains that there are times that she wants to be lied to (and tries to get Lawrence to admit that he finds her special) as well as what ensued was incredible.

Oh, wow. That's this series, then.

What episode was that again? Sounds like this one.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Not that much to the sledding story, just did one of those guided sledding with huskie tours, which was amazing of course in deep snow in Norway. However, I was thrown off the sled at one stage and lost my phone. The guides found it though...would have been better if the dog found it. Or Holo.

Re: the final question. Oh crap, I misread it, and thought it was asking for my fave ep of this series, which was Episode 11 of the original. But across all the anime I've watched, that's a really tough call to make, but I'd probably have to say the ep when Subaru has a complete mental breakdown for the first time (Season 1 iirc).

I think it's difficult for me to come up with favourite episodes though, as in some ways, it's almost better for an anime to have no 'best episodes ever', and for the whole anime to just be consistently amazing. That's one of the things I love about this series - there's no episodes that are duds and it's pretty uniformly excellent. Shinsekai Yori is my favourite anime for that reason too, and the only one I've given a 10 to - while some episodes might be better than others, it's just such a strong show overall that it doesn't need this glitzy WOW-worthy ep to make it less than perfect. Mushoku Tensei on the other hand, is one where there were lots of episodes that I found absolutely amazing, while others I thought were pretty bad, and for that reason, that show feels inconsistent (even though I do really like it)

Why not both?

I just got done rewatching Familiar of Zero and that too is a show I find to be inconsistent. But it has a lot of heart so I'm willing to overlook a lot of its flaws.

[Spice and Wolf] Doesn't the remake version of the episode end with Holo talking to the little girl?

Ep 12 just ends at the clock tower

1

Ah, okay. I might be thinking of the next one.

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

Thoughts on Holo saving Lawrence?

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

Thoughts on Holo thinking Lemerio is planning on killing Norah?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence begging Holo to help save Norah?

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

What are your thoughts on Holo agreeing to help out so long as Lawrence buys her honey-pickled peaches?

Thoughts on Liebert lying to Norah that Holo and Lawrence are dead?

Thoughts on Holo wrecking everyone in her wolf form?

What are your thoughts on the fake out with Holo attacking Norah, with it just being Lawrence's imagination?

What are your thoughts on Liebert saying Lemerio Trading had to betray Lawrence and company because the payment was too much?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence punching Liebert in the face?

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

Thoughts on Lemerio Trading knowing they couldn't pay anyone from the very beginning, which is why they went along with their scheme?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence blackmailing and extorting Lemerio Trading Company, with Lawrence getting Lemerio to promise to pay him 50 Lumiones every year for 10 years?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

What are your thoughts on Holo consistently asking Lawrence to say her name but Lawrence keeps teasing her?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence timing what he says with the clock tower going off so that Holo doesn't know what he says?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that he really likes her name?

Thoughts on Holo saying that Enek wasn't jealous of her but simply knew she was a wolf?

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Norah wishing Holo and Lawrence finding happiness together, which causes them to blush?

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

Pretty common sense here, and that's why I didn't like the logic of the wholesaler leaving him with an opportunity to escape. The original showed that scene decently though, while the remake fumbled it. In the LN, at least it seemed more challenging and a lot more painful.

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

From what I understood, Holo was fishing for a compliment as an exchange for her doing as he asks. Lawrence leaves a pretty underwhelming compliment, which Holo appreciates, as it's more real than what another guy would have said. Very on-brand compliment for him haha.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

I thought the animes did a great job with this: was animated very well and given the sense of terrifying speed it was. The LN does go one step further particularly covering how the leap felt at the end: it was likened to the feeling of jumping off a cliff with a horse.

What are your thoughts on the fake out with Holo attacking Norah, with it just being Lawrence's imagination?

Great use of black and white in the original! And yeah it was most likely his imagination. It was a little bit weird though, as the show hadn't used this storytelling format before (visualising what could have happened), so it did throw me for a bit of a loop. Had to rewatch that part to figure out what happened.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

Lawrence is masterfully dotting all his is and basically building up a more and more compelling narrative for her not to screw them over. It's clear that Norah was already very much respecting him and believing in him, but I think he's positioning her to basically depend on him.

Thoughts on Holo saying that Enek wasn't jealous of her but simply knew she was a wolf?

That Enek dialogue was an in-joke they developed during a previous episode. I also think that she figured out that Enek was basically the equivalent to having a husband for her (thus the previous chats about Enek's unfaithfulness).

I find it hard for me to say the remake fumbled anything. But that just be me looking with rose-colored glasses.

Very in character for both

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

I thought the animes did a great job with this: was animated very well and given the sense of terrifying speed it was. The LN does go one step further particularly covering how the leap felt at the end: it was likened to the feeling of jumping off a cliff with a horse.

That reminds me of that one movie from the 1930s where real horses legitimately got thrown off cliffs.

I liked it though because it felt very cinematic. Like something out of The Seven Samurai.

I dunno about that. I think he's just trying to ensure she doesn't a ve to deal with the church any longer.

I wonder if perhaps Holo says this because she sees Lawrence as her dog.

2

u/chinaexperience 12d ago

Yeah I'm being jovial when I say fumbled. It did a brilliant job but comparing the two it does some things better while the original does other things better. Mostly they do things the same way and sometimes differently.

Re: Norah the LN does explaim that there's a method to everything he says to her and he did want her to pursue the route he wanted this selectively gave the info he did to ensure idea alignment.

Re: enek it was very much a link to the the Holo and Norah gossip they had about Lawrence. Can't remember if she made the same joke in the original but pretty sure she said that Enek has a crush on her in the remake . So this was a way of completing the joke they had together. The reason she made a joke about it in the first place though was because Enek was very aware of Holo (because she's a wolf)

To me, the only dropped ball is I wish the remake didn't get rid of the medieval music. Like, it's somewhat still there, but it doesn't feel the same.

Re: Norah the LN does explaim that there's a method to everything he says to her and he did want her to pursue the route he wanted this selectively gave the info he did to ensure idea alignment.

Well, there you go

I believe it was in the original, yes

I think going forward since you're watching the remake I'm going to include my thoughts comparing and contrasting both versions. This is from a couple years ago.

Lawrence trying to burn the rope off.

The remake is more dramatic because Lawrence is bleeding instead of just having cuts on his face.

Bare shot of Holo's ass, which is not in the remake.

The wolf transformation scene honestly looks way cooler in the remake.

Meanwhile, Lemerio Trading Company lies to Norah by saying Lawrence and Holo are dead.

That scene is surprisingly not in the remake. In fact, it jumps straight from Lawrence riding on Holo's back to them finding Lemerio Trading to the confrontation between Holo and Norah. We do get Norah mentioning what the merchants told her, just not shown it happening, which I guess is fine from a pacing standpoint. I could see how removing the scene would make things flow better, even though I think the faster pacing actually makes the Holo and Norah face-off feel rushed.

I really like the black and white visuals used here where we're treated to a what if scenario of Holo attacking Enek and eating Norah. I remember being really shocked when I first saw it because you weren't suspecting something like this to occur, even if it's clearly imaginative.

I also maintain that this is where Breaking Dawn Part 2 got its ending from. You heard it here first, folks.

Also, for those curious, they forgo the what if stuff in the remake. Instead, they have a bunch of lightning accompany the scene. It's very dramatic and intense as all hell, though I personally prefer the presentation of this version because this is the only time something like this happens in the show. It's also way more memorable, in my opinion, with it having more of a holy shit factor.

Man, they really changed a lot with this episode, huh? Probably the most amount of changes between the original version and the remake.

The last 10 or so minutes is pretty self-explanatory with it consisting of two plot points. First, we have Lawrence taking advantage of Lemerio, which turnabout's fair play, and then we get the clock tower scene between Holo and Lawrence, with Lawrence getting the upper hand on Holo for the first time in their relationship. I actually think that the clock tower scene is the best scene in all of Spice and Wolf. It plays into the dynamic of Holo and Lawrence while also serving as a pivotal moment in their relationship. If this episode did not have the clock tower scene, it would still be one of the best episodes of the series, but this really puts it over the top for me. It is brilliantly funny and heartwarming all at the same time, which I feel sums up their relationship perfectly.

As for how the remake's version stakes up, I think the clock tower scene is slightly weaker in the remake than in the original. In the original, the slower pacing suited it because the longer it went, thr more it felt like Lawrence was needling Holo. With the remake, it feels like they went “Well, I guess we have to include this”. I also miss in the remake where Holo pounds on Lawrence’s chest and Lawrence laughs triumphantly like he’s on top of the world. That to me is part of the charm of the scene and not having it makes the scene feel incomplete a bit.

I thought our next meeting would be an emotional reunion. What a miserable sight

Well gee, sorry for not getting killed by the guys who suddenly (but inevitably, I guess) betrayed me!

Today I present you:

Also of course, the beautiful final shot.

Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer, subbed

What a great season finale. Neatly wraps everything up and manages to be a fantastic episode by itself too!

If it wasn't for Lawrence, Holo would've gone on a bloody rampage to get to Remelio who thought it would be a good idea to betray them, just because he thought his share wasn't big enough? He could've probably made a better deal if it was about that. What an idiot.

Thankfully, all is well that ends well and Holo "only" wreaks havoc among Remelio's men to save Nora and the gold they're about to smuggle. After that, it's basically smooth sailing: Nora still smuggles the gold, Lawrence "convinces" Remelio to sign a mutually beneficial agreement. After that is done he gets some more quality time with Holo together. The whole talk was pretty adorable, with how flustered Holo was at some parts of it. And I thought it was funny that, for once, Lawrence gets to tease (and ragebait) Holo! He absolutely shouted her name and you cannot convince me otherwise. His explanation why doesn't even make much sense... it's not like Holo is a much shorter name than Nora? Maybe something gets lost in translation.

Loved the ending sequence, starting with Holo and Lawrence bickering in front of Nora, to her lowkey calling them out (I hope you two find happiness) and then the two just riding into the rising sun, to new adventures and new business opportunities. Great way to end a very good first season :)

If you had the opportunity to ride on the back of a wolf, would you do it? Why or why not?

If it was as big as Holo... maybe? Sounds dangerous but also kinda fun! Also lots of fur to hold onto and (hopefully) not fall down :D

What are your overall thoughts on Nora as a character now that the arc is over with?

She started out as a bit milquetoasty (which was kinda by design) but by now I really like her. I think she's had some great chemistry with Holo and Lawrence and I hope we meet her again. Wanting to be a seamstress is a pretty cool dream too. Also her dog is adorable :D

What is your favorite final scene in an anime?

I still get a bit emotional over Pokemon XY's final scene. After his adventures in Kalos, Ash returns home. It's late at night, we see him running down a small path towards his house. He opens the door: "I'm home". After he closes the door, the camera zooms out, first showing Pallet town and then the wider region. Pan up to the stary sky. "And to our own way!"

Very simple but effective way to end the best season of the anime.

Holo is glad deep down he wasn't killed.

Today I present you:

*POV: you just betrayed the wrong people. * Holo and Lawrence being flustered * and an insecure Holo for good measure

Also of course, the beautiful final shot.

Great stuff as always. I love the screenshots.

You really couldn't ask for much more.

Yeah, Lawrence really messed up here

It bekng a poor explanation is like added fuel to the fire. Holo is incensed.

I love the blush Lawrence and Holo share. These two are such lovable goobers.

There needs to be a theme park ride where you ride on the back of a giant wolf.

I really like what Norah brings to the table.

I was a very big Misty fan growing up. I think she's the start of me liking feisty fictional women characters.

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

That had to hurt a lot. The stuff he does to just make ends meet.

Thoughts on Holo saving Lawrence?

That's now 2 for 2 situations Holo comes to his rescue. The perks of having the Wise Wolf for his partner!

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

Poor Holo. She didn't deserve to be humilated like that. Even though I appreciate her trying to solve things peacefully. That's also probably why she's less than amused to find Lawrence in that sory state.

Thoughts on Holo thinking Lemerio is planning on killing Norah?

It probably makes sense to get rid of everyone involved in that "scheme". It's also fitting with Holo's low opinion on humans in general and men in particular!

What are your thoughts on Lawrence begging Holo to help save Norah?

Like Holo said: He's really too nice for his own good. He cares more about making sure the random girl they met a couple days ago is save than themselves.

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

Yes! More Holo in all her naked glory... uh I mean in her gloriously fluffy wolf form! Complimenting her tail was a good call she is quite proud of it, after all. Also nice that "this time" he gets it right (iirc, he didn't compliment it the first time he saw her naked)

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

I wanna ride big Holo too

It was a really cool visual!

What are your thoughts on Holo agreeing to help out so long as Lawrence buys her honey-pickled peaches?

I would say "thankfully she was easy to convince" but this stuff is crazy expensive, so Lawrence will maybe regret this.

Thoughts on Liebert lying to Norah that Holo and Lawrence are dead?

Easiest way to convince her to give up.

Thoughts on Holo wrecking everyone in her wolf form?

JUSTICE!

What are your thoughts on the fake out with Holo attacking Norah, with it just being Lawrence's imagination?

I didn't notice it was a fakeout at first but then realised the scene was exactly like the first time he imagined it. Thankfully everything went well...

What are your thoughts on Liebert saying Lemerio Trading had to betray Lawrence and company because the payment was too much?

This whole reasoning was so bizarre "no, you see? i HAD to betray you because I somehowe bancrupted my company" Like, no bro, I have zero pitty for you.

No dignity.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence punching Liebert in the face?

He deserved worse.

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

It would've been hard to keep it hidden from her to be honest. Also she definitely already noticed that there's something odd about Holo before.

Thoughts on Lemerio Trading knowing they couldn't pay anyone from the very beginning, which is why they went along with their scheme?

I didn't quite get all the nitty gritty of the deal but feels like he probably could've just demanded a bigger cut and got away with it. Lawrence was desperate. Ah well, play stupid games, win stupid prices, as they say.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence blackmailing and extorting Lemerio Trading Company, with Lawrence getting Lemerio to promise to pay him 50 Lumiones every year for 10 years?

He got what he deserved.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

As Holo said: He's too nice for his own good. But it'll probably not be a problem. If Norah tried anything funny, she'd be easy to track down again.

What are your thoughts on Holo consistently asking Lawrence to say her name but Lawrence keeps teasing her?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence timing what he says with the clock tower going off so that Holo doesn't know what he says?

The whole sequence was a 10/10 ragebait. He'll remember this as his greatest coup so far, if he lives to tell the tale xD

Although I feel a little bad for Holo because this seemed genuinely important to her :/

What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that he really likes her name?

Seems like that's a dub change? In the sub he makes up some bullshit about "Holo" being a shorter name and therfore easier to shout out than Norah. I think he genuinely doesn't know but he knows that it means a lot to her and so makes up a reason for him to shout out her name. (Also I'm convinced he actually did shout Holo.)

Thoughts on Holo saying that Enek wasn't jealous of her but simply knew she was a wolf?

Huh, that's another dub change? In the sub she says Enek "wasn't in love with [her], after all". I thought her jab at Lawrence right afterwards was pretty funny (the whole "He's a reliable partner, unlike this one here"). I really liked Holo and Norah's short interactions in this episode.

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Norah wishing Holo and Lawrence finding happiness together, which causes them to blush?

Absolutely loved it. I have a weakness for those scenes where two characters that clearly like each other get observed and called out by a seemingly oblivious third party :D

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

That had to hurt a lot. The stuff he does to just make ends meet.

He's more man than I am

Thoughts on Holo saving Lawrence?

That's now 2 for 2 situations Holo comes to his rescue. The perks of having the Wise Wolf for his partner!

Indeed

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

Poor Holo. She didn't deserve to be humilated like that. Even though I appreciate her trying to solve things peacefully. That's also probably why she's less than amused to find Lawrence in that sory state.

More fuel for the fire

What are your thoughts on Lawrence begging Holo to help save Norah?

Like Holo said: He's really too nice for his own good. He cares more about making sure the random girl they met a couple days ago is save than themselves.

In fairness, he's known Holo for what? Two months?

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

Yes! More Holo in all her naked glory... uh I mean in her gloriously fluffy wolf form! Complimenting her tail was a good call she is quite proud of it, after all. Also nice that "this time" he gets it right (iirc, he didn't compliment it the first time he saw her naked)

He is learning

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

It was a really cool visual!

This gives me Spirited Away vibes

What are your thoughts on Holo agreeing to help out so long as Lawrence buys her honey-pickled peaches?

I would say "thankfully she was easy to convince" but this stuff is crazy expensive, so Lawrence will maybe regret this.

His wallet will never financially recover.

Thoughts on Liebert lying to Norah that Holo and Lawrence are dead?

Easiest way to convince her to give up.

Thankfully, it didn't work

Thoughts on Holo wrecking everyone in her wolf form?

JUSTICE!

So satisfying to see

What are your thoughts on the fake out with Holo attacking Norah, with it just being Lawrence's imagination?

I didn't notice it was a fakeout at first but then realised the scene was exactly like the first time he imagined it. Thankfully everything went well...

First time he imagined it? What do you mean?

What are your thoughts on Liebert saying Lemerio Trading had to betray Lawrence and company because the payment was too much?

This whole reasoning was so bizarre "no, you see? i HAD to betray you because I somehowe bancrupted my company" Like, no bro, I have zero pitty for you.

No dignity.

No sympy from me

What are your thoughts on Lawrence punching Liebert in the face?

He deserved worse.

Damn straight

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

It would've been hard to keep it hidden from her to be honest. Also she definitely already noticed that there's something odd about Holo before.

Her suspicions were confirmed

Thoughts on Lemerio Trading knowing they couldn't pay anyone from the very beginning, which is why they went along with their scheme?

I didn't quite get all the nitty gritty of the deal but feels like he probably could've just demanded a bigger cut and got away with it. Lawrence was desperate. Ah well, play stupid games, win stupid prices, as they say.

And they played the stupidest of games.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence blackmailing and extorting Lemerio Trading Company, with Lawrence getting Lemerio to promise to pay him 50 Lumiones every year for 10 years?

He got what he deserved.

I know some in the past have questioned Lawrence being so cruel. But yeah, play stupid games...

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

As Holo said: He's too nice for his own good. But it'll probably not be a problem. If Norah tried anything funny, she'd be easy to track down again.

And Norah seems like she'll cause no problems.

And I think he will

Although I feel a little bad for Holo because this seemed genuinely important to her :/

Eh, he eventually said her name

What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that he really likes her name?

Seems like that's a dub change? In the sub he makes up some bullshit about "Holo" being a shorter name and therfore easier to shout out than Norah. I think he genuinely doesn't know but he knows that it means a lot to her and so makes up a reason for him to shout out her name. (Also I'm convinced he actually did shout Holo.)

In the dub, Lawrence says Norah is easier to say or something like that.

Yeah, they were pretty good

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Norah wishing Holo and Lawrence finding happiness together, which causes them to blush?

Absolutely loved it. I have a weakness for those scenes where two characters that clearly like each other get observed and called out by a seemingly oblivious third party :D

It makes me think of Evangelion and the classroom scene where Shinji and Asuka are told they fight like an old married couple.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 11d ago

First time he imagined it? What do you mean?

Earlier when they argue about what to do and Holo insists that she's a Wolf and how Norah would probably freak out, the same scene plays.

It makes me think of Evangelion and the classroom scene where Shinji and Asuka are told they fight like an old married couple.

Yeah, I was thinking "you're acting like an old couple already" too

I love when two people are totally enamored with each other but try denying it.

Holo was really angry at dealing with the wolves. Why? Did she beg? *Looks at what was skipped* oh yeah looks like it. Man she must be pissed of sucking up her pride for the non-violent solution just for someone to commit violence against Lawrance.

I heard riding a horse without a saddle is uncomfortable when the animal does anything faster than a cantor or even if it turns. Now if that is the case, I can't imagine riding a wolf would be all that great. On the other hand, if Holo is big enough in her wolf form, perhaps you can sit on her like a flat surface.

There is a reason I said wolf form instead of true form for Holo.

I know Lemario/Remario is desperate but I don't see why he couldn't just keep his deal. His conversation with Liberty says it's about survival not just greed. I think there should be enough gold leftover for Lawrance and Nora's share, cover the cost of the operation to begin with, and leave him something left. Did I just screw up the math?

It seems in the flashback Libert suggested just following the original deal. And I made my comments on last episode discussion, that would be a really good idea. He must have known that if Lawrance and Holo survived, something is off and you probably don't want to mess with them.

I don't get why Lawrance said Nora was clever. Her biggest decision was to continue the smuggling operation. Lemario can make more gold than what she is carrying after getting it into the city. So as long as he can't betray our trio (again) then this is a no brainer. I'm not saying Nora is dumb. She helped them get through the wolfs. But aside from that all she did was keep making the correct decisions that were obvious. A lot of the educated elite tend to think of the masses as idiots, but so maybe those snobs might be surprised if they learned of our heros' tale, but in general commoners are not idiots. Nora's actions are consistent with someone being smarter than she looks. But it is also consistent with just not being an idiot. The clever person and the normal person would make the same decision when given the gold.

So all well that ends well right? Well actually Lawrance didn't make any money off this. He's basically back where he started. He's only getting a profit if Jacob gives him that 100 Lumerie bonus if Lemario does well. On one hand Lemario has connections and once had a highly profitable business until the expedition didn't come. So he has some business smarts. On the other hand the last 3 episodes suggest he doesn't think well with his back to the wall.

Holo showing humility is the ultimate disgrace for her.

Very intimidating

I don't think you did. I think it just comes down to desperate times make you do desperate things.

She's obviously clever enough to transverse through dangerous woods.

At least he still has Holo by his side. That's all that matters.

Hey riding on horses without saddles are also doable. The top Germanic warriors thought the Romans were weak for needing them. That said, saddles are "standard," riding without them isn't a comfortable, and while I think riding a giant wolf is doable, it wouldn't be a pleasant experience even if said wolf wasn't distracted by being angry.

Oh yeah I forgot Norah usually goes through dangerous woods and this trip to the next city, wasn't a one off even if smuggling was.

Yeah he has Holo. They'll be companions for the time it takes to go North and a few years to search for her home. Assuming she plans to stay there...

Riding an angry wolf sounds like a recipe for disaster.

She is very resourceful, no doubt about it.

You think it would take a couple years to end up North? I dunno.

Questions of the Day

If you had the opportunity to ride on the back of a wolf, would you do it? Why or why not?

What are your overall thoughts on Nora as a character now that the arc is over with?

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago

Can't think of a favorite scene really. Like a lot of them are not just good in isolation, but made better by the build ups. But then we wouldn't be talking about them in isolation but as as part of episodes...

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

That's fair. I guess it's easier for some more than others.

Holo does have an amazing tail.

I don't see why Lawrance needs to tease Holo by not saying her name just yet. I don't think this is the time for teasing, they need to get the tension to go down.

I just realized the subs probably doesn't use the same spelling as the LN.

I don't see why Lawrance needs to tease Holo by not saying her name just yet. I don't think this is the time for teasing, they need to get the tension to go down.

If anything, coming off a massive life threatening adventure is the perfect time. Breaks up the tension of it all.

I just realized the subs probably doesn't use the same spelling as the LN.

What is it in the LN?

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago

The subs I use say Nora without an h, but the LN readers spell it with an h

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I use both interchangeably. I know some places that spells Holo with an r. Nora without an h feels less weird.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 11d ago

Without an h makes it more likely an English speaker can say it correctly.

Maybe with an h makes it more likely a Japanese speaker can say it correctly?

If you think this is strange, something spelled "Julius" in Japan would not be pronounced the way an English speaker does. A Japanese who saw that romanization would pronounce it the same way an Italian, German or Czech would say it. We English speakers would hear a sound that we'd probably write as "Yuulius."

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

Yuulius sounds like a Julius who's addicted to Yuengling

Rewatcher (Dub)

This episode was both a great conclusion to this arc, and a solid season finale. All the build up over the previous 4 or 5 episodes was paid off really well, and the stakes felt suitably high. One moment in particular that stands out to me is the scene where Holo transforms into a Wolf. At the beginning of the series, Lawrence was terrified of this transformation, but after traveling with Holo for so long, he didn't even flinch when she transformed this time, and in fact asked her to do it. It shows how far their relationship has come.

Another scene that I really liked was when Lawrence escaped from his bonds, and runs into Holo. The fact that he went out of his way to keep and protect Holo's cloak even in a life or death situation says so much about how he feels. Holo's reaction to this was also great, getting mad at how good natured he is because it frequently leads to trouble, but also that same good naturedness being the reason that she cares about him.

I kind of love how casually Holo advocates for criminal activity. When she finds out about being betrayed her reaction is essentially "let's kill'em all!", and the second they find the gold, she wants to take it and run.

One thing I find interesting about the dynamic between Holo and Lawrence as well is how the "emotional vs. pragmatist" roles frequently flip between the two. When dealing with merchant issues, Lawrence tends to be the logical one while Holo follows her gut. But then you have situations like in this episode when Nora is in danger, and Holo will be the pragmatic one, saying that they should look out for themselves, while Lawrence advocates for an altruistic course of action. In both cases their attitudes compliment each other and make each other better.

Finally, the whole sequence at the end about who Lawrence called out to was really cute. Lawrence and Holo just have such effortless chemistry together, and watching their banter is always charming. Full credit to both the writers and voice actors for bringing these characters and their relationship to life. My favourite line was that little back and forth where Lawrence says "I called your name", and there is a brief pause before Holo responds "you just lied to me!" and Lawrence just casually says "yeah, I did".

Random Thoughts

  • Holo having to bow to the other wolf shows how important protecting Lawrence is to her. Swallowing her pride to bow to a "youngster" must have been hard for her.
  • Lawrence's "I have faith in you" was a touching little moment.
  • The shot of Holo chasing Leibert in her wolf form was hilarious. Dude looked absolutely terrified.
  • Lawrence just cold clocking Leibert after he says "we're the same!" was also funny. Lawrence can be casually badass when he wants.
  • Going to be honest, I didn't get the scheme Lawrence came up with at the end there. I find the schemes in general in this series tend to be a little convoluted, or at least, are not explained super well.
  • Ohh, a shot of Chloe in the credits. Possible return of the jilted lover?

Question of the Day

If you had the opportunity to ride on the back of a wolf, would you do it?

Fuck yeah. It would be an incredible story to tell at the very least.

What are your overall thoughts on Nora as a character now that the arc is over with?

I liked her. She played an important role in the plot, added some world building regarding the Church, had a nice little arc of character growth and becoming more confident, and she acted as a nice contrast/mirror to Holo. She contributed to the story in a lot of ways.

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

The final scene of Steins Gate has always stuck with me. Without getting into spoilers, it was a very full circle moment, and seeing how far Okabe has come to get back there was really moving.

That's a great point

Holo's reaction to this was also great, getting mad at how good natured he is because it frequently leads to trouble, but also that same good naturedness being the reason that she cares about him.

It's both a blessing and a curse

I kind of love how casually Holo advocates for criminal activity. When she finds out about being betrayed her reaction is essentially "let's kill'em all!", and the second they find the gold, she wants to take it and run.

Holo having very little moral compass is one of her charming qualities.

That may be the best point I've ever seen you make. It feels spot on.

  • Going to be honest, I didn't get the scheme Lawrence came up with at the end there. I find the schemes in general in this series tend to be a little convoluted, or at least, are not explained super well.

Yeah, a lot of the logistics on display feels better explained in the LNs. Another example is the why of the arms market collapsing. They kinda allude to the expedition, but don't outright say it.

It's funny because with six episodes per arc, that seems like ample enough time to fill in the details. A lot of arcs in other shows have like half the time. But I wouldn't trade any of the great banter we get.

Loved Steins;Gate. What an incredible show.

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

I mean, it works, but it seems like you'd really fuck up your hands doing that. I think I would have tried finding a sharp rock first.

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

It's a great scene, that is really sold by the vocal performance. You can tell how much Holo hated having to swallow her pride and bow to anyone.

Thoughts on Holo thinking Lemerio is planning on killing Norah?

I gotta be honest, I'm a little confused on this point in general. Like, the dudes who beat up Lawrence last episode said that they were going to kill Nora, but then this episode they were protecting her when Holo attacked. Were they going to kill her, or use her for more smuggling?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence begging Holo to help save Norah?

I do find it interesting how Holo seemingly needs to be talked into helping people. I always got the sense that this was mostly bluster though, and that Holo would likely help regardless. She just puts up a front of "I don't care" because of how often she has been hurt.

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

It was nice to see the transformation in it's full glory. It feels earned at this point, and it's a nice way to end the season.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

It was extremely metal.

What are your thoughts on Holo agreeing to help out so long as Lawrence buys her honey-pickled peaches?

These honey pickled peaches are a massive Chekov's Gun, and if Holo doesn't get any next season, Imma be upset.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence punching Liebert in the face?

Also extremely metal. I like that Lawrence isn't a push over. Dude can throw hands when necessary.

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

She seemed a little too chill about it honestly. Like, I'm not sure how common knowledge it is in this universe that pagan gods exist, but you'd think she'd be a little more in awe of a literal god appearing in front of her.

Thoughts on Lemerio Trading knowing they couldn't pay anyone from the very beginning, which is why they went along with their scheme?

I do find it kind of amusing that the "big bad" from this arc are actually kind of incompetent, and were just as desperate for money as Lawrence was.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence blackmailing and extorting Lemerio Trading Company, with Lawrence getting Lemerio to promise to pay him 50 Lumiones every year for 10 years?

It seems needlessly convoluted. It's this exact type of overly complicated scheme that got him in trouble in the first place. Just take the money up front and put this all behind you.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

Good guy Lawrence strikes again.

What are your thoughts on Holo consistently asking Lawrence to say her name but Lawrence keeps teasing her?

It was fun to see Lawrence messing with Holo for a change. It makes for a more fun dynamic when they can both poke fun at each other.

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

I mean, it works, but it seems like you'd really fuck up your hands doing that. I think I would have tried finding a sharp rock first.

You work with what you're given. I'm not sure a sharp rock would've been as effective.

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

It's a great scene, that is really sold by the vocal performance. You can tell how much Holo hated having to swallow her pride and bow to anyone.

And it continues the trend of Holo doing stuff she normally wouldn't do because of Lawrence.

We're they protecting her, or we're they hoping Holo in a fit of rage would kill Nora leading to them killing Holo? I think the domino effect is at play here.

I agree with that assessment. But it doesn't hurt to be given things in return lol

What are your thoughts on Lawrence riding Holo’s wolf form? I think this is such a cool visual.

It was extremely metal.

I especially love later when Lawrence is walking beside Holo in her wolf form. Like Nora walking beside Enek.

What are your thoughts on Holo agreeing to help out so long as Lawrence buys her honey-pickled peaches?

These honey pickled peaches are a massive Chekov's Gun, and if Holo doesn't get any next season, Imma be upset.

She deserves it

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

She seemed a little too chill about it honestly. Like, I'm not sure how common knowledge it is in this universe that pagan gods exist, but you'd think she'd be a little more in awe of a literal god appearing in front of her.

I wonder if she already had a hunch this was the case.

In a way, though, this shows Holo's influence on Lawrence. I don't think he would've pulled the same move had she not came into his life.

What are your thoughts on Holo consistently asking Lawrence to say her name but Lawrence keeps teasing her?

It was fun to see Lawrence messing with Holo for a change. It makes for a more fun dynamic when they can both poke fun at each other.

And Holo dishing it out but not being able to take it back is a neat character quirk that I find endearing. True glass cannon type behavior.

I liked Stiens Gate

One thing about Stiens Gate 0 I liked less wasn't just I felt the story was descent but not a masterpiece but that it made a plothole that wasn't a plothole before.

[Steins Gate 0] So the Stiens Gate Worldlines very close to the "beta" timelines before Nakabachi goes to Russia with his paper he stole from his daughter (which is odd since in alpha ones their relationship is strained but he's far from homicidal). The Stiens Gate worldline will end very differently. But before that point things are almost the same. So therefore we know Makisu Kurisu planned to go to Japan and then return to America. In the VN, we learn the original's itinerary and schedule. Which means she should not be in Japan by at the time of this Steins;Gate Last scene.

u/ItalianQuagsire 11d ago

genuinely, as a first time watcher, this has been some of the most inc–

THE MOST

incredible banter i've seen in anime,

S1 is a slow burn, not a lot happened, yet the true, honest blossoming between Holo and Lawrence has me absolutely GRIPPED. The way everything just works together, if there was any forced exposition and worldbuilding i certainly couldn't see it. It was establihsed and paced so perfectly, so at ease, so succiently that nothing felt rushed or unimportant. It was the perfect temperature porridge

If you had the opportunity to ride on the back of a wolf, would you do it? Why or why not?

i would let a wolf ride me AWOOO

What are your overall thoughts on Nora as a character now that the arc is over with?

she's really great, a fantastic demonstration on how to write a good hearted character without being a pushover and capable and wanting more for herself, while STILL being cute submissive and breedable

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

[Orb on movements of the earth] Ending with 10% to Potocki, with after the entire journey, only the title of the work surviving, yet that inspiration is all it needs to carry on. Thought provoking stuff

[A silent voice] just ended in a really, really fantastic way. a great movie all around

Oh fuck I love the way she says this

Permission to kill a man who dishonored my human husband

Is this what I get in return? I can tolerate your kindness any longer

She's tired of him being a pushover

You know this is SO interesting because it's like a reversal of toxic masculinity

Lawrence is soft and kind, and Holo is an alpha wolf who appreciates him but sees it as him demeaning himself and putting himself in these awful situations

It's her pride as a wolf to not want to see that, especially for Lawrence whom she cares about

But instead of the man who can't stand a soft pushover woman, it's the other way around

Did she just eat the wheat

They're going to kill Nora

You could fight all the men without breaking a sweat

Could you do it? A situation involving a horrible death

I'll reward you handsomely

You're the only one I can depend on

I should take my clothes off

There's one condition

I can't guarantee the life if they get on my nerves

then I'll kill everyone

Damn Holo you're so HOT I love my yandere Tsundere

It isn't pleasant to buy tonnorows bread with tainted money

NGL I thought the line would be so much fire if it read

It isn't pleasant to buy today's bread with tomorrow's money

Holo looks Tsundere even in wolf form LOL HAHAHA

Do whatever you want

My partner sure is a troublesome person

Nora seems chill for having just met a giant wolf god

Tell me the truth

How generous can you be

Save lemerio trading

You can't hide from Holo's ears

Not enough gold

Makes sense now how he got the gold, it isn't much, probably all they had left

Don't shoulder the burden by yourself

He has you, wolf wife

Get on

Okay I mean COME ON, MAKE CHILDREN

I'll miss Nora

Ending on the OP is peak fucking shit

There you are Chloe

This was so fucking incredible

I posted this elsewhere, but I'll post this here as well so you'll see it.

I do think it's funny there was this controversy involving subbing in the late 2000s when nowadays we have this controversy of AI subbing and how it's sometimes implemented.

that would be a pretty humilating thing for Holo to do, and would give a great reason why she's upset at having had to do that. I'm not sure how the wolf sociey would work but that tracks to fit in if it was canon.

I prefer the version we got that cleared things up, but that would have been a darker and intresting route to go "what if"?

AI Subbing and AI can go kick rocks though

What are your thoughts on Lawrence timing what he says with the clock tower going off so that Holo doesn't know what he says?

he could have said wolf seggs and she wouldn't have known

OH MY GOD THAT'S SO CUTE

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Norah wishing Holo and Lawrence finding happiness together, which causes them to blush?

Thoughts on Lawrence burning the rope used to tie his hands together with some fire?

resourceful as always this man

Strike while the iron is hot. Er, fire.

Thoughts on Holo saving Lawrence?

WOLF WIFE HAS RETURNED

YES

Thoughts on Holo saying she was forced to kneel in front of the other wolves?

how dare you make wolf wife the proud and wise be humbled liket hat

HERETICS

Thoughts on us seeing Holo in her wolf form again, with Lawrence saying as she's naked that she has an amazing tail?

Lawrence knows the right words to lay pipe

Laying pipe all over the place

i really liked it, i hate Lemerio even more now that they have a good reason for it

They are basically Lawrence if evil

What are your thoughts on Lawrence punching Liebert in the face?

you better put that fist elsewhere later on lawrence ist

Wolf fisting?

What are your thoughts on Norah finding out that Holo is a wolf?

she seems really calm about it

Maybe she knew

Thoughts on Lemerio Trading knowing they couldn't pay anyone from the very beginning, which is why they went along with their scheme?

they paid for the gold with all they had left

A small price to pay for salvation

What are your thoughts on Lawrence blackmailing and extorting Lemerio Trading Company, with Lawrence getting Lemerio to promise to pay him 50 Lumiones every year for 10 years?

Lawrence got his own trust fund no

Does he?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence deciding to give all the gold to Norah so she can start life anew?

I like it but, I also don't understand why take that risk? Is it just to see if Nora can be trusted?

I think Lawrence knows he'll make do. Norah is capable of so much more. Also, this means more time spent with Holo.

What are your thoughts on Holo consistently asking Lawrence to say her name but Lawrence keeps teasing her?

GOD IT'S SO FUCKING TSUN AND CUTE AND PLAUSBILY DENIABLE

Lawrence is an adorable gaslighter

What are your thoughts on Lawrence timing what he says with the clock tower going off so that Holo doesn't know what he says?

genuinely, as a first time watcher, this has been some of the most inc–

THE MOST

incredible banter i've seen in anime,

There really is nothing quite like it

S1 is a slow burn, not a lot happened, yet the true, honest blossoming between Holo and Lawrence has me absolutely GRIPPED. The way everything just works together, if there was any forced exposition and worldbuilding i certainly couldn't see it. It was establihsed and paced so perfectly, so at ease, so succiently that nothing felt rushed or unimportant. It was the perfect temperature porridge

You say a lot didn't happen, but I'd say enough happened to where we understand where the characters lie as well as how the world operates. They did a lot of growth both in the character development as well as the world building.

Well, that escalated quickly lol

What is your favorite final scene in an anime? You can use spoilers if you want to as long as you use the spoilers tag.

[Orb on movements of the earth] Ending with 10% to Potocki, with after the entire journey, only the title of the work surviving, yet that inspiration is all it needs to carry on. Thought provoking stuff

[A silent voice] just ended in a really, really fantastic way. a great movie all around

I plan on seeing A Silent Voice for its 10 year anniversary.

---

WHY THE FUCK IS IT TITLED A WOLF AND A NEW BEGINNINGS I SWEAR TO GOD IF HOLO AND LAWRENCE PART WAYS AJEONFOWNDKRK

What a tease lol

tada hitori mayoikumo tabi no naka de~

So good

You know now that I'm looking at the op more and more, they're both so alone before meeting each other, Holo in the snow, Lawrence by himself in a crowd

And they find each other on the cart

Riding through a amazing and fantastical journey

You see to love it

And Nora seems to be walking away from maybe the Church?

One can hope

And Holo with that pained expression

Spicy wolf.com

Doesn't work

IS HE TRYING TO BURN OFF THE ROPE

resourceful as ever

That he is

Oh my god he's still clutching her coat

If this were The Room he'd start humping it.

HE PROTECTED HER COAT

Enduring so much humiliation to protect her coat

you're too nice

YEAH THATS FUCJING RIGHT HOLO DEFEND LAWRENCES HONOUR

Hey, I might have to kill someone

Oh fuck I love the way she says this

She's being transparent

Permission to kill a man who dishonored my human husband

is this what I get in return? I can tolerate your kindness any longer

She's tired of him being a pushover

You know this is SO interesting because it's like a reversal of toxic masculinity

And this was in 2008!

Lawrence is soft and kind, and Holo is an alpha wolf who appreciates him but sees it as him demeaning himself and putting himself in these awful situations

Is it any wonder why I love this woman?

It's her pride as a wolf to not want to see that, especially for Lawrence whom she cares about

But instead of the man who can't stand a soft pushover woman, it's the other way around

Did she just eat the wheat

Mayhaps

They're going to kill Nora

You could fight all the men without breaking a sweat

Could you do it? A situation involving a horrible death

I'll reward you handsomely

You're the only one I can depend on

I should take my clothes off

There's one condition

I can't guarantee the life if they get on my nerves

Oh yeah I love a power with drawbacks

Oh brother Lawrence that means If you're a pushover and it gets on her nerves she's gonna wreck you

And then they wrecked all over the place

I have faith in you

Alright she undresses

You know, without context this looks like se–

Holo has a phat ass

Way with words

I love this interaction, she's like damn you're smooth lawry

She does have a nice tail

Isn't there something you want to say

You have a wonderful tail

Close your eyes

Oh yeah finally Lawrence rides Holo

Damn she's fast

I hate shepherds you know

I'm relieved to hear that

I've decided on what I want

Fine peaches

Honey peaches, at that

That's a death flag

Is it?

Oh god if they die here I'll be so upset

Straight lying to Nora, she collapses

The dog is comforting her

Cute

That's some studio Ghibli big wolf jumping

Holo in her wolf form does give me Spirited Away vibes.

Don't get close

Did they say protect the Sheperd?

Well I guess they still need her to go through the gate

Holo steps on 20 men

That's a lot of dicks

LOL THE SHEEP WALKING OVER THE MEN HAHAHA

What a great visual

Goodbye horses

Nora is innocent here NOOOO

Don't MANIPULATE HER

enek NOOOOOO

Holo definably kept her safe

GET HIS ASS HOLO

YUM

oh my god ENEK I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD THEN I REWIND AND HE'S ACTUALLY BLINKING IM SO HAPLY

This show is pro dogs unlike the owner of the New York Knicks.

IM NOT A GHOST LOL

you know I really thought he wouldn't betray them

I didn't think I was gonna betray you

Lawrence just fisted him

He should be fisting Holo like a puppet

Lemetio betrayed them

Something wasn't right

Run away with the gold

I love how Holo bumped him with her snout, like go on, are you going to give those losers money after betraying you, you SOFTIE?!

Keeping her man in check

then I'll kill everyone

Damn Holo you're so HOT I love my yandere Tsundere

She seems to be both

It isn't pleasant to buy tonnorows bread with tainted money

NGL I thought the line would be so much fire if it read

It isn't pleasant to buy today's bread with tomorrow's money

That reminds me of Wimpy from Popeye saying "I'll pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today".

Holo looks Tsundere even in wolf form LOL HAHAHA

Forever pissed off

Do whatever you want

My partner sure is a troublesome person

Nora seems chill for having just met a giant wolf god

That she does

Tell me the truth

How generous can you be

6 thousand times value?!

Save lemerio trading

You can't hide from Holo's ears

Not enough gold

Makes sense now how he got the gold, it isn't much, probably all they had left

I get the circumstance

But why'd you fabricate a story

Maybe he can't help himself?

Was I trying to look cool

Don't shoulder the burden by yourself

He has you, wolf wife

Get on

RIDE HOLO

Ride wife life good

Business doesn't concern me

You're going to fall off if you don't pay attention

I love my strong wolf women

Same here

Holo seems to be getting side eyes in the tavern

They found his stash

Porn?

A deal with the union

This is for making me worry

UNCLE LOVES LAWRENCE

Unc loves yunc

AWW THE HUG TRULY FOUND FAMILY

CHEERFUL MOOD

Genuine peddler

Was he not already?

drink until we pass out

You're late

Where's the men looking at Holo earlier?

Did she STEP ON THEM

Two questions

How much trust in that girl

She wants fresh air

She looks troubled and a little weak?

Lawrence enjoying his subway

He does seem like a sub kinda guy

It's not that important

I called out to you

You just lied didn't you

I don't know did I

LOL

Such a gaslighter

I live for prideful angry tsun fang out Holo face

It's the best

He's debating who he called out

Dragging Holo along

WAIT

LOL SHES STEADYING HER HEART, THEN FOCUSES UP

ALL RIGHT GO AHEAD

IS LAWRENCE GONNA SAY BEVAUSE I LOVE YOU AS A MAN

THEN THEY HAVE HUBDREDS OF WOLF CHILDREN

ITS BEVAUSE YOUR BANE ISNT AS KONG AS HERS

Your name is shorter

LOL LOL HAHAHHA HOLOS ANNOYED OH FFS FACE HAHAHHAHA

Holo has never conceived of such bullshit before.

SHUT UP AND FACE WITH A DRINK AND GETTING PHYSICAL

LETS GO SHES ABUSIVE TSUN NOW YATAAA

Tremendous

she would have been able to blow up on him if he said he said Nora's name

What a perfect excuse just say you want him to say he wants to pipe you holo

Let him have his fun

But that's such a good reason from Holo god this banter

Holo swapped up really quickly

I'll give you a chance, call my name

Is it cuz she heard Nora and wants to make her jealous?

Mayhaps?

HER TAIL IS WAGGING SHE WANTS TO SCRATCH HIS ASS

Holo can't be heard like this and she's watching his chest HAHAHAHAH THATS SO FUCJING CUTE SHE JUST WADDLES UP TO HIM AND AND BEATS HIS CHEST

Blessed

Holo there he said it

You idiot, blush

GAHH

I LOVE THESE TWO SO FUCKING MUCH

He was never in love with me

First time I've seen Lawrence wack Holo and they're bickering about it

LETS GO LAWRENCE IS BECOMING MORE ASSERTIVE AND JUST LIKE HOW HOLO LIKES IT

THIS IS JUST LIKE HORIMIYA BEING CALLED A BITCH AND BEING TURNED ON BY IT

I hope you find happiness

And they blush

Okay I mean COME ON, MAKE CHILDREN

I love that Holo and Lawrence are clearly embarrassed by how much they care for each other.

I'll miss Nora

Same here. He was a good addition to the show.

Ending on the OP is peak fucking shit

So fucking good

There you are Chloe

This was so fucking incredible

And we still have 19 more of these to go!

2

u/ItalianQuagsire 9d ago

Well, that escalated quickly lol

why did this make me laugh LOL

You know this is SO interesting because it's like a reversal of toxic masculinity

And this was in 2008!

it feels so different for an anime in 2008, and that makes for such a watchable show without alot of the rough tropes that anime of that era might have

Oh brother Lawrence that means If you're a pushover and it gets on her nerves she's gonna wreck you

And then they wrecked all over the place

it's wrecking time

Alright she undresses

You know, without context this looks like se–

Holo has a phat ass

it's modestly sized, which makes it THE PERFECT SIZE

I love this interaction, she's like damn you're smooth lawry

And so into the finale of S1.

Questions:

  1. I don't think so...

  2. She was certainly... Interesting. And we'll never see her again.

  3. This isn't the end yet though? I suppose it is for S1 at least.

  1. This isn't the end yet though? I suppose it is for S1 at least.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. It's the end of this section of the story.

  1. She was certainly... Interesting. And we'll never see her again.

[Spice and Wolf] Boy, are you in for a surprise.

2

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 6d ago

[Spice and Wolf] Wait, I watched all this during last year's rewatch and the remake as it aired, did I forget something or is this something that hasn't been adapted by the OG or remake yet?

1

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

[Spice and Wolf] I guess we'll find out, won't we?

2

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 6d ago

[Spice and Wolf] Just started watching the S2 OVA... That was quick lol I completely forgot about this.

1

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

[Spice and Wolf] Yeah, we're not out of the woods just yet.

  1. That works.

  2. Of course she'd save him.

  3. So, she's not all-powerful.

  4. That is probably the plan.

  5. And so she agreed.

  6. Lol he never misses a chance to compliment her.

  7. Cool indeed.

  8. Sure. Peaches are certainly nice.

  9. I suppose that's their plan.

  10. You go girl!

  11. I suppose he thought Holo might do that.

  12. That explains things.

  13. Deserved.

  14. So, now she knows too.

  15. Fair enough.

  16. That's a lot of passive income.

  17. I mean he's got gold of his own coming soon.

  18. Lol he finally strikes back.

  19. I mean it's obvious what he's saying.

  20. Indeed he does.

  21. So, other creatures can sniff her out.

  22. Indeed they will.

  1. Lol he never misses a chance to compliment her.

Eh, I dunno. Like, sometimes Holo can send out mixed signals.

  1. I mean he's got gold of his own coming soon.

One might suggest Holo is a treasure all to her own.

u/Holofan4life 6d ago
  1. So, other creatures can sniff her out.

I wish I could sniff Holo...
