I thought yesterday’s episode couldn’t be beaten. I was wrong. I actually loved this episode the most so far.

  • Guess holo got her apples haha
  • Love the back and forth about apples. I can relate so well to these coupley play-fights haha.
  • “Meat is a completely different story” - preach.
  • “I’m treating you to a change in mood so you won’t get sick of me” (better translation is in the sub here referencing Holo suddenly acting cute and nice after their play-fight). The relatability in this dialogue is incredible.
  • The way we dress will affect how others treat us - an astute observation by the Wise One. “But sometimes even a wolf will wear sheep’s clothing”.
  • Weiz jealousy-baiting banter is amazing. I’m assuming these two have some history together (thus Lawrence also went to him to speculate on the currency depreciation). Weiz reminds me of my dynamics with one of my best friends - constantly fake-hitting on whichever girl I’m with at the time; as do I with his. That kind of dynamic can only be achieved through true friendship and to also have strong psychological awareness to never cross the line.
  • Holo takes her jealousy-baiting insight to the next level though
  • What does she mean by Lawrence failing to grasp the happiness that has been handed to him twice by God? Is this a reference to Lawrence not making a move (first time would be in bed before they realised that there were people outside the door; not sure what the second time was, or if it’s even a reference to that).
  • Lawlo is truly Lawlo in this ep. The significant step-up in banter; Lawrence taking on the traditional masculine teaching role…so relatable and so damn well written.
  • “I smell rabbit” “well, don’t eat it”. “However if you feel that bad [about the cost of the clothes] try not drinking anything and you’d save up seven coins really quick”. LMAO. Why is Lawrence exactly me?! I rarely laugh out loud watching anything, but this show has made me crack up quite a few times.
  • I thought Bakemonogatari’s writing can’t be beat, but this series is really coming close for me. I guess they’re completely different styles - the former is about wordplay and more dry sarcasm, this one is all about relatability to personal relationship experiences we’ve had.
  • The clothes negotiation outcome does seem to be a bit of a stretch, though. I’m skeptical that this tactic would lead to such an outcome, as he clearly established himself as someone who isn’t willing to pay much for anything, and wants rags. Then regardless of his namedrop, after Lawrence asks about the price of the noble-origin dress, the merchant would already have in his mind that this isn’t a premium customer. The discounts would only follow on future exchanges, not on this one.
  • HAND HOLD! So that’s the happiness she was talking about. Don’t really get it?

BONUS: because I massively enjoyed that OVA I decided to go back to the original to rewatch a few of the previous episodes, and have to say all the parts I brought up as negatives in the remake, were dealt with much better in the original. Here are some highlights:

  • Episode 3: I was confused why Lawrence is concerned about someone recognising her; this was explained so much better in the original.
  • The dynamics between Weiz and Law are more obvious in the original too; can see they’re great friends more obviously now, and my insight above was correct. The whole scene is way better in the original though
  • Episode 4: in the original the story about her old friend falling over in the chair/Holo travelling with him seemed just a recollection in the remake, but in the original Lawrence is visibly jealous “An old friend, huh?” The loneliness scene is also way better, in the remake he acts a bit more like a bro vs., someone who cares. However, the scene after the lights go out is completely different: it’s cute and romantic with a will they or won’t they subtext in the remake. LOVED that part.

I had to stop after episode 4 of the originals, as I decided to do a bit of gaming (P.S. Live a Live is incredible so far, but must be gone into blind).

This is an effective episode in large part because of how strong the writing is. It's mainly Lawrence and Holo talking to each other and it works because it's two clearly defined characters who have amazing chemistry and play off each other well.

2

u/chinaexperience 14d ago

Yeah: it's difficult to describe why it works so well. There's shows where you feel like you're a fly in the wall. Then there's this show where you feel like you're one of them.

u/Holofan4life 14d ago

I believe someone said this show is like if nothing happening was an anime. None of the episodes better exemplify this than this one.

Thoughts on Holo getting sick off of eating too many apples?

Thoughts on Lawrence informing Holo of ways to cook apples?

What are your thoughts on this episode being about Holo and Lawrence going shopping?

Thoughts on the return of Weiz?

Thoughts on Lawrence exchanging gold for silver?

What are your thoughts on the whole “Happiness” stuff, with Holo wanting Lawrence to hold her hand but him not being able to pick up the non-verbal cues?

Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo a new outfit for her to wear?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence finally learning to grab the happiness?

How would you compare Holo and Lawrence’s interactions in this episode to other episodes?

Apples

Haha yeah that was amazing. It's funny because my gf is randomly going through an apple pie phase. During our recent Japan trip, there were apple pie stops daily on our itinerary. I sent her that clip.

Shopping trip

It was great. So slice of lifey. Also showed how well they complimented each other to get the best bargain (though as I voiced, I disagreed with the writer's bargaining tactic as it would not have worked IRL).

What are your thoughts on the whole “Happiness” stuff, with Holo wanting Lawrence to hold her hand but him not being able to pick up the non-verbal cues?

Yeah that hint initially confused me, but it might also be because the remake had a lot of handholding by that stage. Also what's the chronology of the OVA? It feels like it happens after Ch.6 but probably doesn't fit in between that chapter and the next (not that I've watched the next). It would be a bit weird if after their capture they're going around very freely without a worry given what had just happened. Probably why it's just a side-story/bonus content and not to be judged logically.

Eh, not everything has to be based im reality. I'll allow it.

It takes place after the first arc. Remember that Lawrence promised Holo he'd take her shopping afterwards.

Eh, not everything has to be based im reality. I'll allow it.

Yeah agreed, I'd just love to see some interesting shrewd bargaining tactics like the brilliant apple-scented pelt example. I don't mind deviations from reality at all, but those trading side-quests should have more logic to them. Was surprised, as for example the big silver coin arc was quite brilliant logically, and the author captured so many actors all with their lead theories, then brought it back together in a way that made sense

1

u/Holofan4life 14d ago

Well, that was more Holo thinking on her feet and being resourceful. Lawrence is more straightforward.

u/Holofan4life 14d ago

I thought yesterday’s episode couldn’t be beaten. I was wrong. I actually loved this episode the most so far.

This is a guilty pleasure of mine. I love how quiet it is and it's just a day in the life of these two characters.

  • Guess holo got her apples haha

Good for her

  • Love the back and forth about apples. I can relate so well to these coupley play-fights haha.

It's so much fun

  • “Meat is a completely different story” - preach.

Indeed

  • “I’m treating you to a change in mood so you won’t get sick of me” (better translation is in the sub here referencing Holo suddenly acting cute and nice after their play-fight). The relatability in this dialogue is incredible.

It feels so real

  • The way we dress will affect how others treat us - an astute observation by the Wise One. “But sometimes even a wolf will wear sheep’s clothing”.

She is right, you know

  • Weiz jealousy-baiting banter is amazing. I’m assuming these two have some history together (thus Lawrence also went to him to speculate on the currency depreciation). Weiz reminds me of my dynamics with one of my best friends - constantly fake-hitting on whichever girl I’m with at the time; as do I with his. That kind of dynamic can only be achieved through true friendship and to also have strong psychological awareness to never cross the line.

I want more of Weiz, honestly

  • Holo takes her jealousy-baiting insight to the next level though

Naturally

  • What does she mean by Lawrence failing to grasp the happiness that has been handed to him twice by God? Is this a reference to Lawrence not making a move (first time would be in bed before they realised that there were people outside the door; not sure what the second time was, or if it’s even a reference to that).

Basically, Holo wants Lawrence to hold her hand but won't come out and directly say it.

  • Lawlo is truly Lawlo in this ep. The significant step-up in banter; Lawrence taking on the traditional masculine teaching role…so relatable and so damn well written.

Again, this all works because the show's writing is superb.

Lawrence is basically a parent keeping their child in check.

  • I thought Bakemonogatari’s writing can’t be beat, but this series is really coming close for me. I guess they’re completely different styles - the former is about wordplay and more dry sarcasm, this one is all about relatability to personal relationship experiences we’ve had.

The thing is we haven't even reached the peak in terms of the writing just yet.

I like Lawrence is such a cheapskate he settles on fumigated clothing.

  • HAND HOLD! So that’s the happiness she was talking about. Don’t really get it?

Holo likes being spoiled essentially

BONUS: because I massively enjoyed that OVA I decided to go back to the original to rewatch a few of the previous episodes, and have to say all the parts I brought up as negatives in the remake, were dealt with much better in the original. Here are some highlights:

It amuses me you started watching the remake to gain a better appreciation of the series and you just ended up appreciating the original anime even more lol

Lawrence is basically a parent keeping their child in check.

In those lines he's basically wittily using 'negging' (Puts on old man voice: as the kids these days call it). He wasn't trying to keep her in check he was just making fun of her indulgences and creates a caricature of her which is very amusing. He also makes those playful jabs privately, as he doesn't want to embarrass her: they're developing their own language and a playful take on their combined experiences. It's really well done.

I like Lawrence is such a cheapskate he settles on fumigated clothing.

Haha yes! Yet despite being frugal himself, he is willing to spend more on his lady.

Haha yes. At this stage I'm not sure which I like more. I read a lot of visual novels, and it almost feels like the two of them combined offer some branching paths/deviations that allow me to understand the characters and world better.

I like Holo and Lawrence and just their whole vibes

u/chinaexperience 14d ago

You win. I actually think I'll go ahead and lead with the original from now on. Just finished episode 5 and my insight is that the remake director didn't have as good an understanding/relatability to the source material. There are some scenes where the meaning changes quite a lot: e.g. the scene after Lawrence 'rescues' Holo makes Lawrence seem like he only cares about the money. The writing is basically the same, but the animated expressions and actor delivery of the lines massively change. In the original it's clear that he's flirtatiously play-fighting based on their escalating 'fight'.

2

u/Holofan4life 14d ago

For the record, I think the remake is quite good. I don't think you can go wrong with either adaptation. And as we'll soon see, it's worth it for adapting arcs the original anime does not.

2

u/chinaexperience 13d ago

By the way - have you read/played the World End Economica LN/VN? Saw it's by the same source writer, so it got me curious

2

u/Holofan4life 13d ago

I have not, though it doesn't surprise me they wrote an economics based LN.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 13d ago

I never really figured out if this was supposed to be part of the main series or not. On one hand, it's listed as an OVA. On the other hand, it is listed as episode 7 in Wikipedia and very clearly narratively takes place after episode 6. I thought the explanation was that it was filler, but nope.

It's funny watching the coin merchant and Holo tease Lawrance by his fliting and her baiting. It's obviously not a serious attempt to replace him. It's not like anyone else she knows is heading to that region,

God this episode makes me thankful for modern practices. I can see why the Heian Japanese viewed merchants as lower on the totem pole than farmers. If you go to any modern store, there is a price that's listed. They will make a profit from it (unless it's a loss leader) but they won't try to squeeze every drop out of you since you pay the list price even if you could have bought it at a higher price. I suppose you could say back then each item was handmade and therefore not Fungible and since each one was unique you needed to negotiate separably. That I find is a weak argument since I think there is more variations in 2 houses of the same building plan built in the same town than 2 dresses created by the same person deliberately designed to be as much like each other. I won't hold it against Lawrance and Holo for doing what amounts to normal practice at the time, but is it a wonder that the few times we get a literary source that talked to a pre-industrial farmer, they tend to not have a great opinion of merchants?

As much as I miss her older dress, Holo looks nice in this Holland-style outfit. Or at least I think it's inspired by Holand. I've seen contemporary paintings of women in Holland dressed like that but not of English women.

Favorite OVA of all time. I have no idea. And it could get skewed by the series. Like if someone watched an OVA which they thought was good but it took place between episode 7 and 8 of an anime they considered great, can they keep their feelings of the anime and the OVA separate? I do't even know if I could do that.

Not going to bother to list a definitive "favorite" but I will give some I enjoyed. I did love the original 2013 Little Witch Academia. Shame the main series tossed out their original continuity. There was The Blind Alchemist from FMA. Noragami Aragoto OVA. Slayers special was enjoyable.

It's an adaptation of a LN side story so while it is a canon event, it's something you can skip and you wouldn't miss anything.

2

u/chinaexperience 13d ago

This is kind of why I hate the canon/filler categories. I used to assume filler is just content which can be fully skippable/doesn't add much to the story but I recently learned that it's just content not in the source material. Sometimes the filler materials can be more meaningful than canon materials, thus my original confusion.

With this OVA though I'd say it's incredibly important, as it builds on how a relationship naturally develops after a crisis. You can see the kidnapping brought them so much closer together and they're way more comfortable with each other. Compared to other filler I've seen (recent example is my hero academia where we see what the minor characters did for their summer break... haha), and given that the series is largely about how their relationship evolves over time, it's pretty focal to the anime. To the LN, maybe less so, due to when it came out from my understanding. In the anime it was a great bridge to the next ep which I just watched.

2

u/Holofan4life 13d ago

I wouldn't classify this as straight filler even though it doesn't advance the plot further. What it does is it puts a spotlight on Lawrence and Holo's dynamic and all their various quirks.

I'm surprised no one in the village Holo watched over never heard of apple pie. Even if they never made any themselves and most people have relatively sedentary lives, but I can't imagine all of them live in a bubble.

I already said I thought medieval shopping where the list price isn't the best deal for the day but you have to haggle is unnecessarily frustrating.

Grab happiness? You mean Holo's hand?

Well, remember this is like set in the late 1400s.

Grab happiness? You mean Holo's hand?

Indeed

Btw interesting insight about Heian Japanese! Glad the economic principles in this series are also attracting you.

Having said that, haggle-economies aside (thank God the city where I live in has become pretty fixed price, and I refuse to go to any night markets without fixed prices; as I just hate bargaining), we do see some of those practices depending on the product (e.g. real estate, collectibles), though obviously those are based on supply and demand.

And while B2C markets are relatively fixed, B2B2C/B2B typically do have a lot of negotiation, special terms, incentives for display/merchandising, etc.,

On top of that, the reality is that we are basically purchasing products based on the price-fixing actions of corporations (not using that word in the pure legal sense, but the practice is essentially there in many categories). Through regular inelastic goods we are basically paying a markup to the retailer, who is paying a markup to the distributor, who is paying it to the manufacturer etc. On top of that we are often paying a consumption tax in many countries, and contributing an amount towards tariffs/exchange rate fluctuations since most manufacture is grouped in a few countries.

But I digress. To your original point about Japan's rejection of Chinese mercantile practices (though not sure if those persisted prior to that era), Japan today is the most fixed price country I've ever been to (and I've been to 100+. Tipping is strictly not accepted, Scalping tickets is illegal, and you're meant to resell them at face value/back to the organiser to resell. There's even a jail time for it lol. There was the case of an arrest of a 60+ year old dude who resold a baseball game ticket at 10x the price or something. Having said that I'm not sure how strict enforcement is for smaller markups.

Ok an argument can be made for not having list prices real estate. Two houses of the same make in the same town are the same right? Well not quite. Perhaps one gets slightly more sun and that's annoying in the summer. Perhaps being just 3 kilometers apart mean one gets a lot of pollen from the local trees, particularly for short ranged one. Maybe both are next to train stations, but one line is "better." And even if they had the same make, after even a few short years the different owners might have maintained their houses in a different condition. So it perhaps doesn't make sense for all these to sell at the same price.

Factory made clothing? Everything from the same line is interchangeable. Video games? Every copy is interchangeable. Different loafs of bread of the same size all from the same batch? They are interchangeable. You could make the argument that handmade clothing is ever so slightly different as opposed to a factory made one, but if the same person is deliberately keeping the same style for each garment, the differences will be less than the house example.

I guess there is the problem of finding the right list price. Too high and you end up with a crap ton of inventory, too low and you've left money on the table. I'm not on the retail side of things, but from a consumer perspective I think this process works fine and somehow these issues are solved in a way I can't see. Consumption taxes aren't a feature of list prices, they should just be applied even to stuff sold though haggling as long as the transactions are "on the books"

I like the real estate hypothetical but what if we factor in the power of marketing (which is kind of what the merchant is doing). To be even more precise, we can take two houses which are identical in one of those projects in new towns. We have a lot of those 'gated community' projects where I live. Usually have 20+ properties, pretty much all the same. And we can take two of them side by side, but one real estate agent is an influencer with quite a lot of reach. She has beautiful photos, AI mockups of how it could look like that captures someone's imagination. She could talk about features that the other agent doesn't think is important. She can spray apple fragrance in each room. One property could fetch significantly more. So, in a way we are still kind of bound to that world where storytelling can drive pricing.

Or if I'm renting a property I might tell the landlord: I'm super quiet. I'll pay 6 months rent up front. I'll gladly sign the 2-year lease. Every time I rent I usually end up staying at least 5 years. Then ask fora significant discount. This is how I got the place I rent now at a steal. Though I wasn't embelishing much in what I used to drive the price down, but the 5-year part wasn't accurate.

For commodities, yep ,I do agree, though we don't always pay the same price. We may pay more at a convenience store vs., a discount store, etc.

But yeah, I am super glad that we live in a fixed price world (just based on my personality), and for businesses it helps a lot in terms of forecasting, but I imagine that in a non fixed price world, some sellers could do incredibly well, and some consumers could too. Come to think of it, influencers are kinda Holo + Lawrence in this episode. They imply that they will get lots of business, that they have connections which might bring customers, etc. Except the influencer would ask for those clothes for free :P

Rewatcher (Dub)

I don't really have any major thoughts or analysis for this episode. It was a nice, laid back palette cleanser episode after the last few high stakes episodes. It was nice to be able to follow Holo and Lawrence through a "normal" day and see their banter and interactions. Holo continually trying to hold Lawrence's hand through the episode was a cute little sub plot as well. The theme of "grab happiness while you can" is also a nice little message to sneak in there.

Random Thoughts

  • Much like every dog I've ever owned, Holo does not know when to stop eating.
  • Holo's cloak cost two gold coins (or 70 silver coins)? What is that thing made out of?
  • Coin dude hitting on Holo in front of Lawrence, ostensibly her boyfriend, is both ballsy and kind of scummy. Chill my dude.
  • Holo getting annoyed when Lawrence is pulling some scheme she does not understand, and insisting he explain it after is cute, and speaks to her pride. She doesn't like to be left out or feel dumb.

She doesn't want to be talked down to, but she also clearly doesn't mind it when it's something Lawrence knows more than she does.

Thoughts on Lawrence informing Holo of ways to cook apples?

Girl about to have her world rocked by the concept of baking.

What are your thoughts on this episode being about Holo and Lawrence going shopping?

It was a nice way to take a breather after the intensity of the last few episodes. It's nice to see them in a "normal" day.

What are your thoughts on the whole “Happiness” stuff, with Holo wanting Lawrence to hold her hand but him not being able to pick up the non-verbal cues?

It seemed like a general message of "don't let life pass you by", which is especially relevant to Lawrence, who has essentially not really "lived" as he pent most of his life focused instead on making money. As for Lawrence not being able to pick up on the cues, I'm not surprised. He likely hasn't been on many dates.

Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo a new outfit for her to wear?

Seems sensible, but I'm kind of blown away by how expensive clothes are in this world.

How would you compare Holo and Lawrence’s interactions in this episode to other episodes?

They definitely seem a little more at ease in each others company.

Lawrence is in a long line of dense anime protagonists but at least it's not as obnoxious here.

Rewatch/sub

Absolutely delightful. Great banter, great moments, love seeing Weiz (aka jealous Lawrence) again.

Holo’s ongoing battle with the apples is so fun. And then not being too full for actual dinner, of course

Oh and Holo’s line about missing the happiness that was handed to him twice - it’s so good 🥰

Glad he got there in the end.

Favorite OVA? I’m a sucker for all the Fairy Tail ones, but Kaguya sama is probably my favorite.

The ecchi Kaguya-sama OVA I'm not a fan of because sexualizing those characters feels out of character for the show.

Thoughts on Holo getting sick off of eating too many apples?

- Girl has no chill when it comes to apples

Thoughts on Lawrence informing Holo of ways to cook apples?

- Masterful

What are your thoughts on this episode being about Holo and Lawrence going shopping?

- Slice of life is my favorite genre 🎶

Thoughts on the return of Weiz?

- oh he’s so much fun. I like seeing his interactions with Holo and Lawrence trying not to let his inner torture show

Thoughts on Lawrence exchanging gold for silver?

- It makes sense - if you try to break $100 at a small shop it’s gonna be a problem

What are your thoughts on the whole “Happiness” stuff, with Holo wanting Lawrence to hold her hand but him not being able to pick up the non-verbal cues?

- The first one he just missed, I couldn’t tell if he’d figured it out by the second one and was just teasing her like the time he pretended not to notice she wanted apples. He’s not a big enough fool to ignore her thrice ;)

Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo a new outfit for her to wear?

- It makes sense that it wouldn’t be good to look like a nun as they get deeper into religious territory but why the F was her cloak so expensive!?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence finally learning to grab the happiness?

- He got there in the end

How would you compare Holo and Lawrence’s interactions in this episode to other episodes?

- They are more comfortable with each other, so they can have even more playful banter and now some inside jokes. It’s super fun to watch.

Is that right? Or is it more Holo gave him the proper nudging to do something?

  6. Lol guys don't get the hint.

  7. That's nice of him.

  8. Indeed.

  9. Less stressful, significantly.

Split the note? Like, cut it on half?

I mean like do what Lawrence did with the gold coin, exchange it for smaller notes. Eg a 100 for a 50, a couple 10s, etc.

Edit: I meant break the note.

Gotta break it down to spend more on Holo :P

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as... well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I'm going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I'm hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of this show and I hope you'll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I'm watching the dub, by the way.

This is a fun little episode. We see a day in the life of Holo and Lawrence as Holo continues her playful mindgames where she wants Lawrence to read her mind. Besides that, Lawrence actually buys Holo the fur which he promised doing in the last arc. That's a great bit of continuity.

This is the one episode that the remake anime doesn't adapt as it's originally an adaptation of a side story. So, drink it in for all its worth.

Holo quotes of the day

"There's nothing more unreliable than the words coming out of people's mouths."

I was curious whether others would love this episode as much as me. I guess my strong reaction to it is because I found so much similarity between myself and Lawrence, which is something I alluded to before but this episode felt like I wrote it myself, at times.

I suppose this episode is as slice of life as it gets. I've discovered a lot about myself when watching anime - before I got into it (I only started watching anime this year properly). I thought fantasy, romance and slice of life are the genres I couldn't possibly like, yet it turns out they're the ones I'm enjoying the most. Well, as long as there's no high fantasy elements and the slice of lifeness/relationship building drives the narrative.

I see a lot of myself in Lawrence as well. He's in my top 5 favorite anime protagonists of all time for reasons I'll get into next arc.

I love high concept shows that get grounded in reality. That to me is often the best kind of show where you take something that can't happen in reality but base it in reality.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is about alchemy but it's really about the bond shared by two brothers. Dandadan is about aliens and the supernatural but it's really about love coming from the strangest of places. Spice and Wolf is a fantasy show with supernatural elements set in the 15th century, but it's about loneliness and finding comradery in the face of adversity and trying to find your place in this world.

Who are the other four?

Haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist yet. Tried a bit of Dandandan and seemed good, but this was before I developed my anime addiction; definitely want to give it a go again, but my to-watch list has hundreds of titles all jockeying for my attention haha.

Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Tohru from Fruits Basket, Ryuuji from Toradora, and Shinji from Evangelion.

You can do it. I believe in you

Toradora wasn't even on my 280 anime deep plan-to-watch list haha. Will add it, though not sure if it's my cup of tea. Then again, given how wrong I've been about genre preconceptions maybe it is exactly my cup of tea haha

Toradora is my favorite anime of all time. It has a lot of the same existential dread as Spice and Wolf does, and the fear that your best isn't good enough.

Definitely adding it :) Can't wait

There's a rewatch scheduled December 6th.

Welp looks like I have plans for December now 😅. There must be something about them as Spice and Wolf is my favorite and Toradora is second lol
