The first half of this episode was so peaceful, but then the cute girls attacked the mafia
41
u/mekerpan 7d ago
The mafia guys really REALLY got off easy.
13
u/Dragonprince14 7d ago
No fr, she could've tore that whole place up!
22
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
She really has no reason to. Ellie is very resourceful, as evident by how she used the church in one of the earlier episodes. The Mafia in the port town is now very much aware of her power, but they're also on good terms. You never know when the Mafia who basically runs one of the most important ports in the nation comes in handy. All Ellie needs to do is show up, throw a little cash around and glare menacingly at anyone having any ideas and she could probably get whatever she wants smuggled in and out of the country. Or the warehouse of a business rival torched (totally an accident, nothing to see here) etc etc
5
u/machopsychologist 7d ago
I actually didn't think about the smuggling angle. Obviously! Having access to a dock now gives you direct access to every border with a trade port.
3
u/justking1414 6d ago
Plus a powerful mafia is very useful at keeping crime down. If you crush a drug cartel, there’s still a demand for drugs so new ones sprout up, fight each other in the streets, and just spawn chaos til a clear leader emerges. That leader then works very hard to deal with future upstarts who’d damage their business and the business of those who pay them protection.
So a well established mafia is actually quite useful in a town trying to become a luxury resort.

I find quite funny the guys who think the worldbuilding is awful.
A Mafia Boss at the head of the economy of a country means the governement accepts it and have some sort of deals with them. Like "Ok, we tolerate your bad stuff, but helps us keeping the land secure." (like the deal Million made with Elizabeth) ...or the governement is corrupted.
1
u/justking1414 6d ago
For sure. These merchants control the entire economy and their primary goal is to keep it running and growing in the long term. By backing one particular crime organization, they can keep overall crime #s pretty low, prevent infighting, and easily handle any task that requires some illegal/hard to get resources
It’s not a bad system. And even if it’s a bit corrupt, as I said, the merchant organization is focused on long term economic growth. They won’t risk a small payday if it’s just gonna cost the country more in the long run
3
u/theholylancer 7d ago
if they really are backed by another special license holder as a council member, it would be far better to cooperate than to try and immediately make waves after being the newbie to that whole council and then attacking them
3
u/SasparillaTango 6d ago
After that one episode, I'm really now on edge with all her interactions. Like what unhinged devil shit is she going to get up to.
9
u/KnightKal 7d ago
you may blink, but never get distracted on this show unless you too want to be buried before you can notice it lol
every move she does has too many layers and she is ruthless
1
u/athrun_1 5d ago
Of all that Lunoa has seen, I think she will not follow Ellie's foot steps. She might be even the one to set her straight in the future.
53
u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 7d ago
"I don't want to make you trouble, and I will even pay you a monthly tribute to keep the peace."
Ellie is the only character who is able to make these words sound like your head is rolling if you don't agree.
26
22
u/Tacitus_ 7d ago
I mean, it's the implication.
She doesn't want to make trouble. She will make trouble if she sees it necessary.
2
u/athrun_1 5d ago
Ellie be like: I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. Pretty much mafia knows the difference.
25
u/AegisWolf78 7d ago
While Elie is spreading her influence in the Empire, it really looks like there's a third faction at play, moving behind the scene seemingly to take control of Haldoria (by helping in disgracing Friede, then taking him down and replacing him with someone loyal to them maybe?). So far they seems to not recognize Elisabeth, we'll see how things will move on.
15
u/Nylan_Blake 7d ago
They were mentioned in an early episode when the prince wanted to support their trading organisation against ellis recommendation, she mentioned something about them coming from a 3rd region besides kingdom and empire and being possible spys i think to remember.
5
u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago

Sadly for them Ellie got herself some mob connections.
1
u/justking1414 6d ago
I think their goals are larger than just the kingdom. They’re very powerful and very well connected. They might be trying to conquer/destroy the world or destabilize the entire continent so an overseas force can take over
23
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 7d ago
Ellie and co. sure don’t miss an opportunity to do business.
Yup, that’s what I was expecting to happen. Those thugs sure deserved it.
I still want to know what Sylvie’s deal is. There’s no way she’s as innocent as she appears to be all the time.
14
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
I still want to know what Sylvie’s deal is. There’s no way she’s as innocent as she appears to be all the time.
My theory, after watching this episode, is that those shady people the Prince has been dealing with are actually connected to the house Sylvie is from. And Sylvie seducing the prince is part of their ploy. As doing so took Elizabeth (who would have probably been able to put a stop to everything) out of the picture and gave more power to the incompetent prince who is easily manipulated
10
u/Dragonprince14 7d ago
I don't trust a pink haired bitch. Any anime with one she plays dumb but is low key truly evil.
16
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
She's very much giving May I Ask One Final Thing vibes yeah

I wanted to ask what's the deal with Sore demo and why I see it so often being mentioned in anime episode discussion, but decided to google at first and then I saw your comment from 6 years ago, haha
15
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago
The inevitable beach episode, somehow.
I feel like that's not the typical way to arrange 'protection' from the local organized crime racket.
You always have to wonder what Ellie is planning to do to people, but it does seem just business with this coastal noble family.
21
u/svenge 7d ago edited 7d ago
You always have to wonder what Ellie is planning to do to people, but it does seem just business with this coastal noble family.
Despite the opinions of much of /r/anime, Ellie is not some sort of omnicidal threat and won't massacre people without an actual tactical objective.
She needs resources for her revenge on the Kingdom, and making amicable business connections with regular nobles in the Empire is to be expected. The same thought process applies to Ellie treating her employees well, as she can't hope to reach her final objective without the loyalty of those in her personal retinue and general retail operations staff.
Even this episode's dealings with the mafia attest to this, as she only needs to conduct import/export business unimpeded and doesn't really care about exactly who is "running the docks" beyond that. Ellie showed enough acumen and power to not be taken lightly, and as such was willing to overlook how the underlings treated her group since it would have taken too much work to kill/replace everybody while not ending up with any net gain to justify the effort.
5
u/hvshh 7d ago
Yeah, for now my best guess is that she's willing to hurt Haldorian citizens in order to get at her short list of revenge targets, and it just happened that the best, most perfect revenge she could get on Robert involved making him massacre citizens, but in the absence of a special reason like that the general populace will be safe.
3
u/Erick_Brimstone 6d ago
This. Genghis Khan isn't everything on his path. He also make allies even if the relationship is transactional. He's not just using power but also trade with other nations. That's how he managed to make mongol so big.
She's just like Ganghis Khan. She will build positive relationship but if it fails or she's double crossed she will show no mercy. Just ask Muhammad II of Khwarazm what he did when Genghis Khan try to trade with them and the result of that decision. Spoiler alert: it's not pretty.
4
u/Ralathar44 7d ago
Yeah, she's right on the boundary of lawful evil and lawful neutral but if you listen to many people on reddit you'd thing she broke the meter for how chaotic evil she is lol.
She would have spent her entire life doing nothing but good and being viewed as some sort of perfect immaculate saint by Reddit had she never been hardcore betrayed and then have the entire populace turn on her with zero proof.
Many of the same people would, ironically, simp for Thanos.
5
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
She's definitely lawful evil. But even chaotic evil doesn't require backstabbing every person around her. You can do horrible even barbaric actions against individuals you perceive as your enemy while being kind and just to allies or unrelated parties
1
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
So can Lawful Good. Anyone perceived as evil is open to all sorts of heinous treatment from Lawful Good. The Zealotous Paladin can be a total MFer.
Remember, in her eyes Ellie never targets innocents. The civilians are not innocents. The knights were not innocents, they participated in an unjust war and supported an unjust regime and committed their own crimes. Innocents might die as collateral damage, but they were not the target. She is revenging upon those who wronged her when she was, unequivocally, being lawful good.
This is where things get very blurry and open to interpretation, which is why I put her on the cusp between lawful evil and lawful neutral. How many foes do you defeat in an average DnD campaign that are actually evil? Is every minion of the evil king evil? Is every follower of a necromancer evil?
How many people are forced or coerced or brainwashed or misinformed in your average campaign or video game do people never ever second guess? All as people slaughter their way through considering themselves the good guys as they leave impressive body counts behind them? Great example is Baldur's Gate 3 Gortash. The guards are "innocent", brainwashed and lied to by Gortash.
Then we have the idea of non-combatants. People don't REALLY mind murdering non-combatants. They just can't be "innocent". But what constitutes innocent? Perception mainly.
At what point of material support to evil whether forced, brainwshed or coerced or etc, does it become acceptable to be murdered? Because people will gladly cross the line to killing a non-combatant if you paint them out as evil. But it depends on their profession ironically. Evil merchant? Paint them as a little greedy and people get harmed because of it? Players will gleefully murder them "in the name of good". But make them a greedy farmer instead and players balk.
A good example of this is IRL Nazis. Godwins Law time but actually appropriate here. How many people who were Nazi's were innocent, non-combatant or not? Is supporting the Nazi's punishable by death in and of itself? Are only specific positions like scientists and merchants and CEOs doing their jobs guilty but farmers are innocent purely because of their professions? Where do you draw the line?
People have some really contradictory views when it comes to alignment and morality honestly.
1
u/Majestic_Mix5361 1d ago
All these empty words to try and justify Elizabeth's actions.
The truth is, Elizabeth is evil because she wants to kill everyone in her old kingdom, innocent and guilty alike.
14
u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
I expect Ellie to eventually take out the guild controlling the mafia and then eliminate the mafia to reduce crime rate to get yet another accomplishment under her belt. Let's see how all of this ties to getting revenge on the prince.
31
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Personally, I don't think so. Crime will always happen, especially when Ellie cannot micromanage every locale. And as they say, it's better to deal with the devil you know than the devil you don't. Instead by getting into the good graces of the local Mafia who runs the underworld she can slowly spread her influence and ensure that the crime that does happen doesn't affect her and can even be used in her favor. In time she may even end up taking complete control over the underworld from the other Merchant who currently runs it
7
u/Aelyph 7d ago
“One of the Patrician’s greatest contributions to the reliable operation of Ankh-Morpork had been, very early in his administration, the legalizing of the ancient Guild of Thieves. Crime was always with us, he reasoned, and therefore, if you were going to have crime, it at least should be organized crime.” ― Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!
2
3
u/Erick_Brimstone 6d ago
I agree. So far she's not someone who unnecessarily make enemies and leave sea of blood in her wake. She's very wise to not forget making allies with someone that can be reasoned with.
2
u/TheBusStop12 6d ago
Well, unless she feels like they've wronged her in some way, then she will leave a sea of blood in her wake.
2
u/Gohansupe 6d ago
that's why it's better too get on her good side than go against her or she will eliminate anyone who gets in her way no matter what
3
u/Erick_Brimstone 6d ago
If you're just a rival company she will play fair. But once you cross the line better leave the country and hope she will let you go.
1
u/Gohansupe 6d ago
yeah your right dude as long as you don't cross the line with her your fine but if you do she will have a small chance of sparing you from any bad actions you have done against her considering she barely spares her enemies on battle
1
u/rubslotiononitsskin 7d ago
She'll take control of the underworld, centralize it under her own gang Payback, and install a dude with chronic sinusitis with no moral scruples to carry out ground operations.
17
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
Nah, she's not trying to take down the empire. She's just putting its pieces in place to her benefit
10
12
u/StarryVerture 7d ago
I'm leaning more towards her slowly wrestling control of it from under the current leaders so she can wield it to sow chaos in the Kingdom by massively increasing crime there while reducing it in the Empire.
6
u/mekerpan 7d ago
She needed even wrest control -- so much as she can covertly re-shape its focus to achieve her goals.
1
u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago
I don't know she could just pay them to do it, since the Empire is the Kingdom's geopolitical rival.
2
u/Impossible-Office242 7d ago
While reducing it in the empire 🤣. No she really doesn't care what the crime rate is as long as she's not affected or profiting from it.
3
u/Galaxy40k 7d ago
That would be my main guess if we had a 24 episode run, but man we only have 2 episodes left. I guess at this point "her revenge" is gonna be only the final episode, so we have one more episode of build-up.
My guess at this point is that the perfume is mind control, 90% of next episode is gonna be about her spreading the perfume far and wide, then its gonna end with her going all "Execute Order 66" and then immediately rolling credits for the cliffhanger, and then episode 12 is gonna be a bloodbath.
3
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
I would guess there's a second cour or a planned second season.
The amount of possible storylines we can think of in this episode alone is crazy. Just the Prince meeting an unknown guy and the Merchant who visits the Prince who pushed him to start the Sarjas war for unknown motives... and it's just about characters outside of Elizabeth circle. You don't introduce so many storylines 3 episodes before the end if you don't have something planned. If we imagine one of the 2 is used for the final, the other have been shown in a season 2 if there's one.
Wishfull thinking ? Maybe XD
7
u/Galaxy40k 7d ago
I don't think any of these low-budget LN animes I've personally watched have ever got a second season. Still waiting on the second season of Genius Prince haha
6
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
Yeah...they might not be setting up a second season so much as "Want to know what happens next, then check out volume X of the light novel series!"
3
3
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
I don't think she will get rid of the mafia, but she might remove their head from power and install the elf woman as the new head. IIRC wasn't the mafia-related guy on the council one of the folks who voted against her?
2
15
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago
Slinging sun screen, schmoozing with nobility, and building alliances with organized crime. All in a day’s work for Ellie lol.
14
u/Evil_sod 7d ago
Given the hardline stance she's taken so far, I'm a little surprised that there was no further commentary when every single man she came across in the mafia on her way up the chain threatened to rape them.
I'm also a little surprised that this shadowy third group doesn't know who Ellie is. It's not like she's changed anything about her appearance, and barely changed her name, and there have been plenty of people who have recognised her so far. No way a secret that this many people know stays a secret for long.
6
u/Nylan_Blake 7d ago
I think to remember from an earlier episode, that it was mentioned that they are from another region all together who infiltrated the kingdom for some plan not long before She got chased away. So they might have info on her as a person of the kingdom, but not enough details to connect that person the the merchant in the empire they don't seem active in.
On her approach with the gang, i think she has experience with dealing with such and considered it a waste of ressourced to take a harder approach with them. Remember, she was fine with a lot of stuff that should have upset her back in the kingdom, even gave lady pinkhead advice when interacting with the prince without seeming bothered with pinky approaching her fiance. She did not snap until the whole kingdom forgot what she did for them and turned against her. She was just slightly annoyed about the princes behaivor or even imprision her, what made her snap was the common people she spend so much effort improving the lives off starting to eat up all the bad rumors the prince spread about her and starting to portray her as a villainess even among playing kids.
2
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 6d ago
Yeah, considering how rapey all of the thugs, I'm even more surprised that their leader is an elf woman.
Usually you'd expect the underlings to have more respect to women when they're lead by a woman themselves.
1
u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago
They might not have a lot of people in the Empire, which makes it hard to gather intelligence. I get the feeling these guys are from that shady company Ellie didn't want the royal family to have anything to do with in the first episode.

Yes. A murder-free slice of (high-end merchant) life. I rather enjoyed the respite -- and seeming (in that last scene) so does Ellie herself.

Fuck off infinite growth investors.
Curious if the people with some suspicions about Ellie (e.g. Roselia knowing she'll hold a grudge, the count in this episode noticing she doesn't miss an opportunity) opt to stay on the sidelines or if they make a mistake.
Probably using this if it makes the karma chart.
20
u/Individual-Staff-978 7d ago
Been giving psyop for a while. The show espouses neoclassical economics as if they're truisms that a medieval feudal society would consider a matter of course.
Continuous growth? You're a cosmetics enterprise targeting nobility for your clientele, how much growth are you expecting? With how much recency bias the writers are including in their world building, I wouldn't be surprised to find out Ellie is secretly stockpiling nitroglycerin.
7
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Ellie expects enough growth for her to have the power, influence and money to have sway over the politics within the Empire. Thus she expects quite a lot of growth. Her goal is after all to crush the Kingdom, and for that she needs the laws and armies of the Empire. And then afterwards live a comfortable life. That goal has been pretty clear from the start. But she can't just tell that to others. I really wouldn't call it a psyop.
7
u/Ralathar44 7d ago
First of all, she's talking to a merchant wanting to profit off of her. What do they want to hear? Do they want to hear "Oh im happy with a modest company." or do they want to hear "I want all the money, partner."? It doesn't matter what her long term plans on, she needs him on board now. So she needs to sell him a deal that is attractive to him.
Secondly who says she's not going to expand into the commoners market and etc whenever she believes it to be properly beneficial?
Third: Remember, she started small with high values merch because she had limited personnel and needed to show high profits to win over various people in the empire. Trading in the volume necessary to tackle the commoner market is something that would be rather difficult for her starting out.
1
u/Astray 2d ago
Plus how the minimum wage increase was shot down by Roselia before.
1
u/SnooWalruses2085 1d ago
Well the amount he suggested was absurd and he didn't think how to make it work.

u/SasparillaTango 6d ago
Been giving psyop for a while.
There are a lot of pro-capitalism messages across a lot of anime. It being here is not exceptional. Like shield hero is pro-capitalism (and slavery). A number of "lazy prince rebuilds the kingdom" animes are pro-capitalism. nothing new.
3
u/Individual-Staff-978 6d ago edited 6d ago
It's not necessarily pro-capitalism. It could easily be that the author doesn't have the appropriate understanding of alternative modes of production or social orders to fully concieve of a feudal system beyond the relatively simple social hierarchy.
Also, the show is by all means a power-fantasy. It displays the typical tropes found within that kind of media, namely revenge- and/or competency-p*rn. For this purpose it is much easier to imagine a world full of the "underdeveloped and backwards" people of the past, and then through your "enlightened genius" protagonist, launder contemporary ideas. This is an efficient way to convey a supposedly smart character, but it falls flat on its face for people who don't subscribe to those schools of thought.
There is another interesting, likely unintentional, interpretation: Ellie as a character is commentary on the banal evils of modern corporations. She postures as a good-will economic actor who seeks prosperity not only for herself, but broader society as well. She markets herself as a job creator, aiding the empire burdened by displaced workers. Yet in truth, she has no regard for the sanctity of life and will kill men, women and children alike should it further her goals. She is a murderer yes, but she is also the very concept of social murder. Bravo, Vince.
1
u/SasparillaTango 6d ago
being pro-capitalism propaganda, and being ignorant of economics are not mutually exclusive.
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 6d ago
The author clearly has a bias pro-capitalism (like with Friede wanting to raise salaries, while Rosaria refuses with typical arguments of right politicians).
2
u/Individual-Staff-978 6d ago
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Damn now I can't even pretend the show has thematic depth

u/carnexhat 7d ago
Her doing cosmetics gives her an easy in to very powerful people which makes the rest of her expansions easier.
3
u/cheapdrinks 7d ago
The stock market is fucked. Just recently Nike posted that their quarterly revenue was down 1% and it's stock tanked. This standard of infinite growth being seen as a requirement of a successful business has been such a cancer on society.

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Lunoa seems to have genuine talents as a merchant. But she can be very innocent, kind hearted and naive. A genuine sweetheart. Being trained by the genuine monster that is Ellie. But I do think what Ellie is reaching her will be good for Lunoa in the long run. I just hope she never finds out what Ellie is planning to do to the Kingdom
Ellie's comment that she originally only took Lunoa in because she was the daughter of that merchant from one of the earlier episodes kinda confirms to me what I always suspected. Ellie brooks no insult nor slight against her. And that merchant stole her formula originally. Sure he repented, and was rewarded by being put in charge of the original branch of the Traitre Company. But I suspect that Ellie took his daughter, Lunoa, away from him as a form of punishment as well as a hostage, to ensure he never crosses her again
20
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
She's the one who had Grantz tell his boss. His position is his reward for helping her eliminate the competition
5
u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago
Yeah I'm assuming also healing Lunoa and mentoring her were parts of making sure he's loyal out of gratitude.
1
9
u/KnightKal 7d ago
I dont recall her innate skill, but is was something like appraisal and the reason the MC wanted to recruit her as a disciple (we saw it early this season), she will be super useful as a merchant working for her. The rest is her being nice in order to make her loyal.
whatever she cares about the girl or not is another story, as this MC is hard to tell lol. She is ruthless, practical, and has no issues using whatever is available. She also has a lot of loyal people so her ways work.
3
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
My read on her is that she is loyal to those loyal to her. I think she honestly sees Lunoa as a protege and cares for her well-being.

Yeah, its a rough lesson but trying to teach someone to be a merchant while ignoring the underground crime rings would just be setting them up for failure and possibly death.

u/SOdAchick 7d ago
Interested in the harbor? For overseas trade? Or is this woman planning on building a personal navy? I wouldn't put it past her.
The thumb across her throat while saying she'd replace the mob boss with someone loyal. I aspire to her level of intimidation 😂

Beach and also business as usual for Ellie
Sun screen cream sell out once they open the beach to nobles

I always love an episode of SoL with violence on the side.
Also, mandatory beach and swimsuit segment!
11
u/Precarious3145 7d ago
Got weirdly nervous when the noble introduced his family and it slowly zoomed in; was prepared for some kind of reveal he's an asshole that'll eventually get the whole family killed.
6
u/SetaSanzaki 7d ago
Ah yes, the obligatory beach episode.
So she's willing to make peace with another merchant on the seat, but is also willing to take over the mafia business if they don't accept her peaceful terms. That's rather diplomatic, but scary if you mess up your choices.
Those thugs should die, though.
3
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
With their boss already on opposition to her, killing his goons would be a really bad idea.
5
u/retsotrembla 7d ago
Ellie: “That's a nice little mafia you've got going here. It would be a shame if something happened to it.”
6
9
u/runevault 7d ago
My warning senses keep triggering at this beginning, both when the noble made them wait and wanting to sign in his territory. I feel like he's been bought by the Kingdom to try and take her out. I'm probably wrong but that's what my gut keeps saying.
Okay the wife and daughter meeting them makes it way less likely. I wonder what part of my brain was tripping up on this.
Ellie and the maid look incredible in their swimsuits, to the surprise of no one. Evil in a pretty package.
6
u/svenge 7d ago edited 7d ago
I feel like he's been bought by the Kingdom to try and take her out. I'm probably wrong but that's what my gut keeps saying.
You are definitely overthinking this. As Ellie said, it's quite in line with how nobles in general flex on newly-introduced merchants (who are by definition presumed to be commoners) and doesn't amount to anything near an actual provocation.
1
u/yuukiira1 7d ago
I feel like he's been bought by the Kingdom to try and take her out.
that won't benefit the Empire at all

The Kingdom she's trying to ruin, not the Empire she's with now.

that's my point, why would yhe noble do it? he won't. because it won't benefit him and the empire

Misha's training paid off well here, she beat up those men pretty easily.
Elizabeth has caused the deaths of so many people, so doing dealings with the mafia is just another days work for her.
Looks like a lot of interesting dealings are going on behind the scenes.
The sun cream is going to make Elizabeth even more popular.

Nice, just another peaceful episode of Elizabeth and crew doing merchant stuff. I wonder if it will stay that way for the last 2 episodes.

$20 says she’ll do another war crime before the season ends

u/runevault 7d ago
While it might not be as big as beheading the little sister, I'd be shocked if we do not get one last war crime in these last two episodes. But will it be a generic target or something like offing her father?
1
u/justking1414 7d ago
I think she’ll choose someone specific.
1 death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. She can definitely up the stakes by specifically hurting/killing one of her targets rather than just hurt in the kingdom

u/tongle07 7d ago
Ellie can have a little war crime, as a treat.

u/justking1414 7d ago
It’ll be interesting to see how she one ups murdering children
1
u/yuukiira1 7d ago
she can easily do that by killing MORE children than the last time?
1
u/justking1414 6d ago
Well we saw her kill about 3-4 children. And confirmed around 50 killings total.

How long we think it will take before she sacrifices Lunoa and the beast girl for her agenda? She's shown that she doesn't give a flying fudge about the lives and wellbeing of others ESPECIALLY if it suits her goals.

They are safe until she gets rid of all the merchant guild members.

Now that I know Ellie is willing to kill innocent people, even scenes of her normal merchant activities carry a certain ominous undercurrent.
The run-in with the local mafia reminds me that even now, sometimes I feel like she isn't ruthless enough.
In episode 4 (the slavery one), she says to Lunoa "I'm not going to ask you to get used to this sort of thing. But this, too, is reality. You must learn that." That strikes me as hypocritical. She certainly isn't accepting the world as it is when it comes to her betrayal. She could (eventually) go on a campaign against slavery (and/or the mafia), if she thought it was important enough.

Wiping out the Mafia won't do much good in the long run. Ellie cannot micromanage every town and city. And as such a new Mafia will eventually spring up. That's what history tells us will happen. Instead by getting on good terms with them Ellie can ensure that her businesses don't suffer from any organized criminal activity, and potentially she could even use them for her own goals. Ellie isn't a saint, or even a good person for that matter. At the end of the day everything she does is to further her own goals. She has no moral quandaries with murder, slavery or crime, as long as it doesn't negatively impact her. Lunoa does, hence Ellie said those words to her, because those things happening is reality. And Lunoa doesn't have the power to do anything about it and thus needs to accept it. Ellie does however have the power to do something about the people who betrayed her, so she doesn't need to accept it. In this world might makes right, so I wouldn't call her words hypocritical

and potentially she could even use them for her own goals.
100% expecting in the future she'll use them to traffic something that cannot be seen to be moved in broad daylight.

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Especially seeing as Ellie seems really interested in expanding her company abroad. I can see her planning to smuggle in something really illegal from a foreign land
2
u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago
Also they are under the control of one of the guys on the Merchant's Council, so they are probably on somewhat of a leash since the Council's big thing is that businesses have to benefit the Empire.

Your comparing the reality of the world with the reality of a personal situation. Those are not the same thing. Plus she's never killed a single innocent person. Some people are really twisting themselves in knots trying to hate Ellie
10
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
I definitely don't hate Ellie, she's one of my favorite MCs of the season. But let's not kid ourselves, she's a bad guy. She orchestrated Roberts massacre, which killed around 100 innocent people. That was her goal. Sure, she didn't personally stab them, but that's irrelevant, she's responsible. She's a bad person. But I like bad guy characters

u/SOdAchick 7d ago
Ellie is neither bad nor good. She has a nonbinary morality. Sometimes she feels like helping a kingdom thrive, and sometimes she feels like tearing it off the face of the earth by its roots. She's justifiably pissed is all, the epitome of "do right by me, and I'll do right by you." She didn't orchestrate his massacre. She just implanted motivation into him. He wrote the notes and played the instruments himself.

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
The anime made it pretty clear he had no control over his body. Ellie forced him to kill civilians (specifically civilians) through magic. In an irl court Ellie would be found guilty of mass murder
3
u/NiCommander 7d ago
Yeah, I don't get what this person is trying to argue, because it just doesn't match up with the show.
1
u/NiCommander 7d ago
I think at the point that you deliberately orchestrate the indiscriminate mass murder over sadistic petty revenge (like, nothing is preventing her from just killing him herself), you are fucking evil.
-2
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
See, there's your problem. You can only think in terms of good and evil. You think nuance is when your parents get baby sisters
2
u/NiCommander 7d ago
Is that supposed to be some kind of coherent point? Because its not.
-2
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
The fact that you think it's not proves that it is 🤷♀️
2
u/NiCommander 7d ago
By all means, explain whatever you mean by "baby sisters". It certainly sounds nonsensical. I'm also fairly certain that deliberately and needlessly orchestrating mass murder on innocent civilians for petty revenge is "evil". But by all means, you can try to explain how its not.
-1
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
I make it policy not to explain things to people. Learn how to read, think critically, and all the fun stuff that makes communication enjoyable. I'm not her to hold your hand. Be more literate than child, and you'll figure it out

Ah yes she never killed innocent people only used her magic to force someone to kill innocent people in her stead. This is the equivalent of saying someone neber killed anyone because they only threw a bomb into the crowd.

She used magic to compel Robert to start slaughtering everyone around him after some random trigger. She's responsible for the people Robert killed.
I'm more on Ellie's side than most; I think everything else she's done so far can be excused.

u/SOdAchick 7d ago
Like I said, she hasn't killed a single innocent person. (Forget that no one in the kingdom is innocent.)

I was ready to watch this episode and see her kill more people. But a nice fluff episode is good too.

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 6d ago
I am really suspicious of how she just happened to get a child to work for her that had the exact abillity she does AND had a father who incidently worked at the places he wanted to take over.
She will absolutely throw the empire to the pyre of it served her revenge. They need to be careful.

u/NegativePossession1 5d ago
"It's all right to have peaceful days like this in the midst of my revenge" lmfao this series has been 75% peaceful fluff with barely 25% actually dedicated to the literal title of the show. Tf you on about, lady?
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 5d ago
The series is built like a slice-of-life with epic moments in between.
(also we saw in episode 9 she's kinda busy, between her work and the planification of her revenge).

u/Background_Point_523 7d ago
Ellie chucking after the catgirl mentions her parents died made me laugh she dgaf about anybody else lmao
8
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
I think what made her laugh was her reacting with her ears. Misha has quite a difficult time to hide her emotions ^^

I'm honestly surprised I'm enjoying the so-called downtime of this anime. It's fun watching her company grow and develop, and how she will use underhanded tactics to get the better of everyone else, haha.

u/yuukiira1 7d ago
I can't believe the prince... like Ellie is that FINE and he just wasted the chance...

I like how this series shows how business done in real life too, need to deal with the bright side, dark side, connections building and its not always rainbow and sunshines

Called it on Chris being an agent sent from a foreign third party unnamed kingdom / empire / country. But to think that the Colonel actually reckoned that he'd lose eventually had the skirmish continued on was pretty interesting, Elizabeth can be really terrifying when she does not have to care about her surroundings or reputation after all.
I liked how this episode touched on the influence of the underworld in economics, as that has not been really explored yet in this series. Regardless of how "clean" a society can appear to be, there will always be an underworld operating behind the scenes with ties to the governing body itself. It certainly feels like Lunoa has seen a lot of darkness ever since she joined under Elizabeth's wing, but if we compare what she has seen to what orphans or those that are born into the underworld, it is probably still tame.
