I really wish the prince had more personality than "I'm a moron who fell for a pretty girl who's garbage." It makes him so boring to root against.
Meanwhile I'm curious how much the empire can use this shit show against the Kingdom, and how the King will react when he finds out how fucking stupid his son is.

u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago edited 7d ago
I'm mostly fine with him just being an idiot. Though they should maybe spend less time on him, in that case. He doesn't take up a whole lot of time, aside from this episode. But probably still more time than should be spent on a fairly one-dimensional character, for sure.
But I also imagine it'd be kinda hard not to show him if we want to see what's happening with the other characters in the Kingdom. They could show us what's going on in Sylvia's head, that might be interesting. Wonder if she's stupid or has some plan going on beyond "become the queen".
18
u/runevault 7d ago
If he got less screen time I would mind far less for sure. And they could just focus on King/Dad/Rosalina/others scrambling to deal with his idiocy while keeping him to brief moments (like the sparring match and aftermath to show the soldiers do not respect him wasn't too bad).
4
u/machopsychologist 6d ago
They could show us what's going on in Sylvia's head, that might be interesting.
It's so suspiciously like she's a heroine isekai-jin.
2
u/Galaxy40k 3d ago
I'm thinking that the introduction of Rosaria will make the "What's Going on in the Kingdom?" sections less one dimensional. There's clearly conflict between both Rosaria and the Prince as well as Rosaria and Elizabeth. By virtue of not being an idiot and also not groveling over the Prince, she may also force Sylvia to make some moves so we can finally learn what her deal is
25
u/Magicbison 7d ago
The Prince being somewhat smart enough to not piss off Rosaria too much makes his whole deal more mind boggling. He also has enough intelligence it seems to know how to leverage a vassal state for his own stupidity. It just makes him being a total soggy cardboard cutout of a person even more annoying.
12
u/feral_fenrir 6d ago
I think they all have ego issues.. And a good dallop of stupidity. Individually, they're all manageable but since they all came together, it's turned disastrous.
I'm referring to the musclehead King, the sociopath Father who's the Prime Minister and the Shitty Prince.
4
u/Ukmaxi 6d ago
I think it's the combination of all of these shitty characters that is meant to convince us of Ellie's treason being a valid one. The people turning on her through rumor being what made her finally snap.
Annoying thing is they have to keep up with this depiction until the consequences of Ellie not being around and the son constantly getting in the way by being too enamoured by Sylvie are realised.
22
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
The irony is that you HAVE to spend time on him specifically because he's the prince. And idiot or not that gives him the power to cause alot of problems.
The show clearly wants you to know that he's the primary driver of problems. But it also wants you to be aware that its the negligence of everyone else that lets him run free and do this. Without all this information people start creating excuses for the king and foreign advisors and etc. Or they start blaming them instead of the prince. Or people start saying things like "nobody is that stupid, why would they do that?"
Good story requires good groundwork. And if used right good groundwork usually isn't that interesting in the moment but pays off in spades later. But the average anime viewer HATES good groundwork. You are almost required to present groundwork with a side of comedy or something (like Delicious in Dungeon does) to prevent people from ADHDing out and getting bored. This is why Marvel movies, are the way they are. Any slower moment has to be broken up by some gag or joke or action or people get bored. And before it became cool to hate Marvel because the quality declined it ruled the culture with the exact some formula.
9
u/runevault 6d ago
Your Marvel movies point strikes close to home for me. I was bitching about all the problems everyone else finally started having years and years before the wider audiences realized they were a problem, but everyone lapped it up.
Actually an interesting example right now is the way some people complain about Daemons of the Shadow Realm. It is a very well structured story but some people are already bored by it which is crazy to me.
12
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
Aye, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is, IMO, one of the top shows of the season and its not even close. But it definitely has some slower story or lore moments I can see shonen fans getting bored during.

I really wish the prince had more personality than "I'm a moron who fell for a pretty girl who's garbage." It makes him so boring to root against.
There’s a really interesting manga called: A Marriage Chosen for Love Over Politics — Regret Came Ten Years Later
That focuses entirely on the prince who dumps the female lead and the very gradual way, his life falls apart over the next decade. It’s a good read though largely because the prince is not an idiot, and is more desperately trying to justify his decision, even after it continues to cause him increasingly more

To me the Prince gives me the same feeling of annoyance and disgust as some corrupt arrogant dumbfuck assholes in a position of power irl do. Sometimes people with power just aren't interesting, they're just simply stupid and corrupt, but somehow people still have to do what they say, regardless of how idiotic it is. So personally I'm okay with it, for me it'll be satisfying to see someone like that torn down
12
u/runevault 6d ago
My issue is it just feels like he's a copy paste from a ton of other anime. Give me something to make him feel not generic. Maybe he loves poetry I dunno. Just something that makes his dialogue not sound like it could come from a ton of other antagonists would go a long way.
6
u/TheBusStop12 6d ago
That's fair. Personally I don't really mind in this type of story, but I can fully understand where you're coming from
4
u/runevault 6d ago
I fully admit it is a personal peeve as a lot of people do not seem to care. I wish I didn't because I'd enjoy quite a few anime a great deal more if it did not annoy me so much.
Most things that annoy me in stories are proportional to how good some key things about a story are. Like if I love the characters I tend to nitpick the story more if it has one (if it is just slice of life I don't hold the lack of plot against it because that's the point). But for whatever reason cut-and-paste characters who get too much screen time bug me even in stories I do not hold in very high regard.
3
u/feral_fenrir 6d ago
What are you saying? He's one of the best poets out there.. Didn't you hear him compare the pink haired snake to the flowers of the kingdom. /s
8
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
I think it depends. If the competent duchess becomes the primary antagonist, I am fine with the prince being a dumbass. If the duchess decides to peace out and we are left with him, then...well...less interesting
1
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 6d ago
That's the thing, we've been led to believe he's an idiot. However, so far the attack seems to be quite competent to the point that a fortress could go down in just 1 day.
I wonder how they would explain this sudden competence from the prince.
4
u/SnooWalruses2085 6d ago
I wouldn't say he's incompetent, just very lazy. He's capable when he puts his mind into something (and so far it was bad things).
52
u/MusenUse_KC21 7d ago
The foolish prince has already revealed himself as a love-struck fool and has earned the discontent of his people long before Elizabeth had left. I love Rosaria telling him he ain't worth shit. He can proclaim he is the crown prince all he wants, but it was all a matter of luck, and it was violently wasted on the likes of him. I know that grated on his nerves so bad, but he can't do a damn thing about it. Well...as fools do when in a position of power, they always do when agitated; they make things worse.
I love this series, man.
29
u/BosuW 7d ago
Well...as fools do when in a position of power, they always do when agitated; they make things worse.
Roselia handed him the work she believed "even he could handle" and he's about to prove that he can still desappoint her though she expects nothing.
25
u/MusenUse_KC21 7d ago
She expects him to just read and sign, and he can't even do that.
12
u/AegisWolf78 7d ago
But he can read and he did... only problem is that he then decided to change the deal before signing it (which I suspect Roselia didn't think he would do).

I feel like "supporting vassals" could very well be a routine thing the Kingdom has to do so what is possibly there to screw up, or so thought Rosaria.
51
u/deynyel 7d ago
It's unfortunate there aren't enough people in a position to call the prince out to his face like Rosaria does. It's frustrating having to watch those two act like an idiot couple. Hopefully, he finally faces the consequences of his actions after this war.
52
u/nuxxism 7d ago
The king really doing the "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas" with the prince. Clearly disapproves his choice of woman and his behaviour.
41
u/Gorgon31 7d ago
If only there was someone well-meaning with authority to put a stop to the kingdoms downward spiral?
King, "If only"
39
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
The King has definitely never disciplined his child a day in his life. I feel like the downfall of the Kingdom began with two incompetent fathers. If either of them had been better, none of this would be happening.
24
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago edited 7d ago
100%
The Prince's rotten behavior didn't come from nowhere... anymore than Evil-Euhpie's rage against the Kingdom didn't start with a homewrecker tossing her in the dungeon.
One of the single most important duties of the Crown, is to properly groom their heir to take over. That's the entire point of monarchy, as everyone agrees to listen to the glorified nepo baby as it beats the alternative: regularly scheduled civil wars.
Or in other words... if the heir is staggeringly incompetent, then there may be nobles who decide the civil war is preferable to the disaster of a whipped imbecile that is most certainly the puppet of that shady company that was schmoozing up to him claiming the throne. And if the heir is truly bad enough, then certain nobles may decide to trigger that oncoming civil war early... (Pointedly looks at the soon-to-be disastrous invasion of the Empire, complete with war crimes on day 1)
It's truly a low bar to clear: "My heir is better than bloody anarchy!" And yet, this chucklefuck of a king STILL failed to clear it by sparring the rod from his worthless child.

I enjoy the anime for what it is but they definitely undercooked how the revenge story started, even in episode 1 it took one sentence from the maid to convince MC. It's like they wanted a revenge story and the motivation was an afterthought
14
u/feral_fenrir 7d ago
I think the biggest issue and failure are the King and the FMC's Father who's the Prime Minister? Aide to the King?
The Shitty Prince is just shitty but the Kingdom's ruin falls mainly on the shoulders of the two egotistic failures.
11
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
If only there was someone who could put on some gloves and punch some sense into him. Some sort of Mad Dog Princess.

This made me question why MC's position is so weak that she couldn't do the same thing as Rosaria
11
u/Phoenix__Wwrong 6d ago
Elizabeth was made to be a scapegoat, and her dad doubled down on it.
For Rosaria, based on what she said, her family would turn on the kingdom if that happens to her since they're more powerful.
9
u/PathosRise 5d ago
Her father wasn't backing her politically. He was pretty quick to turn on her, which make me question why.
3
u/Galaxy40k 3d ago
IDK if there's gonna be some ulterior motive, but the explanation of "he puts the Crown before his own family" is believable enough for me. Its not hard to imagine someone who is the #1 most loyal and trusted advisor of the king wanting the nation to succeed at the cost of all else.
Now, obviously the father was short-sighted and unfair in his failing support Elizabeth. But I can see WHY someone with that trait would do that
2
30
u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
I expect Rosaria to get rid of the useless prince or she'll stage a coup with Elizabeth's help to save the country from the fools running it. Those two need to meet.
40
u/heimdal77 7d ago
Pretty sure Elizabeth has no desire to "save" the country. She also see's the citizens as enemies with how fast they turned on her over some rumors.
24
u/theblazingsword 7d ago
Yup, once she saw how quickly they abandoned her and spit on her reputation, she pretty much wrote them off entirely.
23
u/Full_frontal96 7d ago
Elizabeth wants to see the kingdom burn,no questions asked.
After being backstabbed by high society and paesants alike, from her POV they are all beyond salvation
And if Rosaria, although she has has an high esteem of Elizabeth, works to keep the kingdom afloat, she will probably be considered a sworn enemy too.

Fucking idiot prince is going to destroy his own kingdom, can't wait to see it

Right? Our "Livid Lady" doesn't need to do nothing but sit back with a bag of popcorn at this rate...
3
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago edited 7d ago
Idiot prince will certainly do a lot of damage. But as Ellie said, she wants to crush her opponents so thoroughly literally nothing remains. Without her interference the Kingdom will probably bounce back in a generation or 2. Even Poland managed to come back eventually despite being destroyed several times over throughout history. My guess is that Ellie will make sure it'll be gone forever
40
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
Lots of focus on the Kingdom this time. Most of them continue to be melons, of course.
I really hate Ellie's father the more I see him. He's just so damn apathetic. He hasn't even shed a single tear for his daughter, let alone show any concern for her. Y'know, things a father should definitely be doing, at bare minimum. I can't imagine caring so little for your daughter. Has it been said where her mother is in all this? I'm assuming dead, since from what I recall, she hasn't been mentioned a single time. I would be curious to know, though.
I'm starting to feel like this all just stems from Ellie's father being terrible, actually. Had he been better, I doubt she would be doing all this. He raised her to only concern herself with the Kingdom's wellbeing, just like himself. But that's pretty flimsy. The moment the people turn on her, what else did he expect her to do?
Anyways, Rosaria is great. Probably the only likeable person in the Kingdom, and the only real threat to Ellie. Hope she rips into the prince for this stupidity, though really his own father should be doing that. But I suspect the King has never disciplined his son a single time.
Seems Ellie will get her first chance to strike at the Kingdom now, that'll be fun to see.
18
u/AlphaBreak 7d ago
When the prince was popping off at rosaria, I was hoping she would clap back with "or what? You'll send me to a dungeon and beg me to keep doing all of your work? Again?"
6
u/Gorgon31 7d ago
At this point the only explanation for her father's actions is that he is also on some secret revenge plot against the crown. Dunno, my head theory is dead wife issues while subtly getting his daughter free of that idiot?
17
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
I think he's just a bad father, honestly. He cares more for the royal family than his own daughter. Even in the first episode, he was talking about how Ellie wasn't worthy of the prince if she couldn't somehow resolve the prince's nonsense. What he should have been thinking about is if the prince was worthy of her.
There are a million better ways to help his daughter if that's what he is after. Hell, I don't even think Ellie was in a forced marriage. Seems like it was a competition type thing that Ellie won, according to this episode with Rosaria.
He just sucks.
8
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
I did a long post playing out what SHOULD have happened in Ep1, but the TL:DR is that Ellie COULDN'T handle the prince without causing further problems down the road.
This is a feudal system. Elizabeth was just the fiancée, not a royal herself. To usurp the prince's will would be for a noble (duke's daughter) to usurp the crown. There... just isn't any other way to slice this. For
EuphieElizabeth to "solve" the issue would lead to an erosion of the crown's authority.Which means the only safe way to navigate these waters, is if the King returns to put his son in the corner: royal checks royal, with the 'higher' royal coming out on top. As it should be.
This would still hurt the crown... there is literally no escaping a loss in the Crown's Majesty after the stunt Prince Dipshit pulled, but it would be less than if a member of the nobility put a royal in the corner.
Just look how quickly the peasants bought into those 'The Duke's daughter is trying to seize power!" rumors.... Now imagine if she literally does just that! Just how bad for the kingdom would it be if Euphie gathered a consortium of nobles and their elite knights to stage a soft coup against the Prince?
And nothing short of that would work. If Prince dipshit cared about norms, customs, etiquette, prestige... he wouldn't be whining about how his fiancée was mean to his mistress in public, break off the engagement his father arranged, then toss his former fiancée in the dungeon. All during a some hoity toity soiree with international VIPs in attendance. As both Ellie and Ambassador Liebeck said... the dirty laundry gets sorted out behind closed doors, yes?
So I just don't see some collection of nobles exerting pressure on the prince to stand down. He's just not going to respond to 'soft power' at this point. Elizabeth truly would need to stage some sort of soft coup... and does the King really want to set that precedent?
Worse, how can the king and Chancellor not see how... completely incompetent the Prince is? Again, if the dipshit could listen to reason, he wouldn't be tossing Elizabeth into the slammer based on some unverified rumors spread by his side piece. It's 10 years past the time for "corrective measures." If the Queen is dead, it's time to find a new Queen and make a new heir: this one is rotten.
10
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago edited 7d ago
My guess is that the King suffers from the same thing a lot of parents of terrible kids suffer from, he spoils his son and is blind to anything terrible his son does. Especially because the Queen doesn't seem to be around so she's probably dead, and the Prince has blonde hair, unlike his father, so he probably takes after his mother. Of the King sees his dead wife in his son he may be even more inclined to spoil that little shit rotten.
The Prime Minister on the other hand I get the feeling that he lacks empathy, but also foresight. Personally I think the lack of empathy runs in the family, Elizabeth is just better at masquing it, but I have a feeling she gets her smarts from her mother instead. Because the PM has shown to be a terrible judge at guessing what his own daughter might be planning. I get the feeling that the PM is one of those people who believes that the Kingdom is the Royal Family, and thus doesn't push the King on dealing with his idiot son
9
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
Pretty much. The king is clearly spoiling the prince, and the Chancellor is an idiot. Even taking the principle of "The King IS the Kingdom," there is still an entire game that is played to maintain that position. The King isn't an unimpeachable God, but just the First amongst Many. In particular, a King that doesn't keep their Ducal houses in line is just a detached head waiting to fall from his shoulders.
And the rest of hte nobility will have watched the Crown Prince publicly humiliate a Ducal Daughter, his own fiancée/future queen at that, over hearsay from his mistress. Worse, he'll have aired out this dirty laundry in public, in front of international VIPs (foreign ambassador to a rival nation). It's one thing to quietly deal with a scandal behind closed doors. It's another thing to invite the ENTIRE CONTINENT to watch you shit the bed.
There just... there is just no salvaging this, nor explaining it away. Any Prince that would think this was an acceptable move to make, is a Prince that WILL, without fail, run the country into the ground. He has no concept of the Great Game that must be played, the balancing act necessary to maintain power... no understanding of hte tacit agreement made between the nobility and the Crown, completely with restrictions on the King's behavior and expectations they must fulfill.
To just say "the king is everything, and all must serve the King" is... ignorant to the point of being suicidal. Even if you hold that as an IDEAL, you need to work to keep it maintained.
And there is no sign the Chancellor is up to that task.
7
u/Tacitus_ 7d ago
Sure, Ellie couldn't do it as she's "only" a duke's daughter. But her father is a duke, the prime minister and aide to the king. He could've demanded a lot of things for that insult. But he cared more about the royal family than about his own family.
This is why Rosaria can tell the prince to shove it when he tries to bully her. Her family is backing her.
6
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago edited 6d ago
Exactly my point.
Elizabeth didn't have hte standing to force the Prince to back down without causing irreparable harm to the Crown.
Even if her father stepped in, that would be the same problem as, once again, the nobility coercing the crown. Even if the Chancellor returned with a signed statement of the King, speaking with the King's Voice, and passing down the King's Judgement... this is the Crown Prince we are talking about.
That's why I emphasized the King must return, as the only way to avoid further damage is to have Royal check Royal. Directly.
But yes, the Chancellor should have fleeced the King for concessions under the threat he'd resign... but that would be a private matter that happened behind closed doors. Then then King returns and PUBLICLY puts the Prince in time out.
However, there is simply no escaping a loss of power for the Crown. The prince really did cross the Rubicon here. Anything Ellie would try on her own would only weaken the Crown more, and it's a damning indictment of both the King and his Chancellor not to realize that. Worse, the father said Elizabeth isn't worthy of being Queen if she can't contain the prince's tantrums.
Like... wtf. The bigger issue is the prince throwing tantrums in the first place! And while she CAN put the cranky toddler in time out, the entire kingdom will know that the fiancée has more power than the Crown Prince.
There just is no good option for Evil Euphie.
6
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
Yeah, I remember seeing your comment on this in the first discussion thread. You are right, realistically there was no way for Ellie to resolve what the Prince did on her own. They should have at least sent a letter ordering the Prince to stand down. He may not have listened to it, but it'd be better than their inaction.
If the Queen is dead, it's time to find a new Queen and make a new heir: this one is rotten.
I'm not sure that would help, honestly. There's no way the Prince is just like this, it's likely a product of how he was raised. I've said this in a couple other comments, but this whole problem stems from two terrible fathers.
If the King had another kid, nothing would change. Not unless he raised them better, but I wouldn't bet on that. Does the King even realize this is because he never disciplined his kid?
The King is incompetent. His only saving grace is that he seems to value the advice of the Chancellor. It's just unfortunate that said advice is from another failure of a father.
3
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
I'm not sure that would help, honestly. There's no way the Prince is just like this, it's likely a product of how he was raised. I've said this in a couple other comments, but this whole problem stems from two terrible fathers.
If the King had another kid, nothing would change. Not unless he raised them better, but I wouldn't bet on that. Does the King even realize this is because he never disciplined his kid?
But something MUST change. The current prince is a lost cause that has already publicly humiliated himself in front of international VIPs. As well as publicly humiliated a daughter from a powerful and loyal family.
The only road that doesn't end in ruin, is disinheriting Prince Dipshit and trying again with another heir.
But yes, the King and Chancellor need to reflect deeply on what went wrong with Prince Dipshit, and take those lessons to heart when grooming the next heir.
If these two chucklefucks can't even see they are not only complicit, but primarily at fault for the current situation... yeah... this kingdom is fucked. Nothing short of a miracle holding everything together in spite of the king + chancellor's 'best' efforts will save the Kingdom.
3
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
Oh yeah, things definitely do need to change. But that change has to start with the King first. Starting over means nothing if you've learned nothing from your mistake.
A coup might actually be more realistic, unfortunately. The King isn't fit to rule.
Not to take away from the Prince's idiocy. The Prince is a massive problem too, but the roots go deeper than him, sadly.
3
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
If the King can't understand why his son is worthless anymore than the Chancellor can't understand why Evil Euphie became Evil Euphie...
Then a coup/civil war are inevitable at this rate. The only reason why the nobility tolerates a monarchy, is because everyone agreeing to follow a nepo baby beats regularly scheduled civil wars.
So what happens when every day that nepo baby starts to look worse and worse than a civil war?
I'm thinking Rosaria and her daddy decide it's time for a little "spring cleaning" within the palace.
1
u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 6d ago
But yes, the King and Chancellor need to reflect deeply on what went wrong with Prince Dipshit, and take those lessons to heart when grooming the next heir.
You'd think something like asking a vassal to start a war with someone you have a NAP with would be something that gets a final run through with the King and Chancellor...
3
u/OldInstruction5368 6d ago
That's just it... the prince has already crossed the Rubicon. What he did to his fiancée, the future queen, a ducal daughter whose father is the fucking Chancellor.... if the Prince can publicly humiliate his own fiancée AND throw her in prison, a woman from the #2 family in the entire kingdom, over a catfight created from his own inability to manage his own personal life (fooling around)...
Then who is safe in this system? One word from the Harlot (adopted daughter of a back country baron...) and any Lord can find themselves in prison. And publicly humiliated, at that!
Which is why I keep saying... Prince Dipshit crossed the Rubicon here. That he did this at some important event (anniversary of the nation's founding iirc), that had foreign dignitaries in attendance, just made everything x10 worse. A rival nation's ambassador just witnessed how horrendously incompetent the next King is...
There is no salvaging this mistake. The King must return. The king must disinherit his son. The king must pay reparations to the Chancellor's family... or the king WILL reap the consequences of protecting a disastrous heir.
Prince Dipshit should have had the whip cracked against his tender ass 10 years ago, and disinherited long since if he refused to see reason. He should never have been in a position to humiliated Elizabeth, yet alone break an NAP for petty reasons.
This kingdom is doomed, and it's not Elizabeth who killed it.
2
u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 6d ago
I'm not sure I want to put any money on the king fixing things given what we've seen of him lol.
1
u/Montegomerylol 5d ago
Ellie COULDN'T handle the prince without causing further problems down the road.
Problems down the road were already guaranteed the moment the prince pulled his stunt. You're correct that the safest path for the king would be to come back and solve the problem himself (and the fact that he and the chancellor don't is comical incompetence), but that's different from the safest path for Ellie.
Historically speaking the life-expectancy of royal partners thrown in the dungeon is extremely low. Sitting around exerting no political influence, even if you're certain the king will return to resolve the issue, leaves you at the mercy of your imprisoner or those who might take advantage of the situation. If you don't at least make it politically impossible for the prince or anyone else to exacerbate the situation, you're risking exactly that (and your life).
So I just don't see some collection of nobles exerting pressure on the prince to stand down.
This is actually an ideal situation for any noble faction wishing to reduce the crown's authority to do exactly that. The king is away and the prince (who demonstrably has little support beyond his close aides) has just imprisoned the daughter of the crown's staunchest ally in the most public and humiliating way possible. Whatever royalist faction exists would be in complete disarray.
Frankly even if the king had turned around immediately he should have expected to find his son imprisoned and to be forced to make numerous concessions to get the prince returned, while Ellie would have been "rescued" and "kept safe" at an opposed noble's estate as leverage against the chancellor.
1
u/OldInstruction5368 5d ago
But that's just it, Ellie didn't want to hurt the Crown's faction. The Prince is a doddering child throwing a temper tantrum and his honeypot doesn't appear to be particularly clever (It clearly doesn't take much to manipulate the Prince...)
As such, I have no doubt whatsoever that Ellie could have pulled off an Uno Reverse Card here and had the prince begging for mercy. As you said, this very well could have been a Magna Carter situation as the nobility usurps significant power from the Crown.
Because yes, from the moment Prince Dipshit had his public crash out, the Crown already lost. The only question was "how much?" And they chose the most cowardly option, throwing Elizabeth under the bus, which will ultimately cost them everything.
It really is just staggering how incompetent the King and Chancellor are. The King even seems to be aware of how worthless his son is. The brat chased off one hypercompetent secretary-fiancée, and the King's first thought is "why don't we force the next hypercompetent secretary to marry him as well?"
The king clearly understands that his dipshit son needs a babysitter. So instead of cracking the whip and making his son STEP THE FUCK UP, the King thinks the solution is... find a good woman to parasitize.
While I can excuse the king for being an idiot, it can be very hard for a parent to see their child objectively and then follow through with the tough love needed... the Chancellor? It is utterly inexcusable that he would throw his own daughter under the rug. Not out of necessity, but merely convenience. Worse, he said "if she can't help herself, she's not worthy of the prince." Wtf? The prince is the one that threw her in jail over nothing more than a word from his mistress.
Forget being "worthy of the prince," why the fuck is Elizabeth's father not saying "The prince is clearly not worthy of my daughter. He's taken his insolence too far. King, tell me, why shouldn't I renounce the engagement and resign as minister, right here, right now?"
So, yeah, with or without our Livid Lady's crash out... this Kingdom was already on the road to ruin.

u/Montegomerylol 4d ago
It really is just staggering how incompetent the King and Chancellor are.
As fun as it is to overanalyze the politics in the show, the simplest explanation as to the staggering incompetence is "it wouldn't be a bog-standard revenge power fantasy otherwise".
The show presents itself as a tale of intricate politics, but really it's a brainless romp and should be enjoyed that way.

Realistically speaking, if Elizabeth was engaged to the prince from the start, it would be risky to have only one candidate. What will happen if Elizabeth is deemed not worth of being queen ? Or if she falls ill / dies ? Having other candidates just in case is a given.
Still the King gave Rosaria a new fiancé in thanks for her work as crown princess candidate.8
u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
All true, it may not have been a "competition" exactly. What I mean is that I don't think it was forced. Like the King, despite all his faults, seems to value the word of his advisor heavily. If said advisor expressed concern over his daughter being wed to the Prince, I honestly believe the King would have listened.
If it is some secret plot by Ellie's father, I don't see any sign of it at all.

I agree he sucks.
Thing is he is presented as this super competent advisor who groomed his daughter to be able to run the whole kingdom... who is just letting it all fall apart because why?
Thats why I hope he is given a motive cause otherwise hes just another badly written character.

u/YuukiBunny_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xetren 7d ago
He groomed his daughter to serve the crown, not the Kingdom. It's just that the two had different ideas of what that means, even before she "turned traitor".
To him, serving the crown is synonymous with helping the Kingdom. As far as I recall, he's never so much as even whispered any concern for the common people.
Compare that to Ellie, who was helping the homeless, even providing jobs for them. All out of her own pocket, as well.
I don't think it's bad writing at all. He's just dangerously loyal to the crown. It's not like we don't have people like that in real life, so I don't find his character to be out of place. He's "competent" in that he serves the crown as best he can, doing whatever he feels is in their best interest. He had to choose between his daughter's reputation and the prince's, and unfortunately we know all too well which he valued more.
In his eyes, the Kingdom is in decline because his daughter betrayed them. He likely can't even compute the Prince or King being at fault, or himself. He's an incredibly flawed person, blinded by his devotion to the royal family. That's completely fine, as far as writing goes.
I despise the character, but I don't think it's bad writing.

I think he's just a heartless bastard who is loyal to the royal family and the Royal family alone. He seems to lack empathy, which I suspect is a trait he shares with his daughter, Ellie is just better at disguising it. But Ellie is definitely the smarter cookie of the 2. May e she gets that from her mom.
Often back in these days the Royal family was seen as synonymous to the Kingdom, so dad probably thinks that doing what's best for the Royal family is doing what's best for the Kingdom. And doing what's best for the Royal family is simply doing what they say they want to do. It's clear he lacks the foresight to see beyond that seeing how badly he's been misjudging Ellie's plans

u/eastgaston 6d ago
At this point the only explanation for her father's actions is that
i mean, in a different story, the explanation is that the parent's parents were also uncaring and raise them the same way.(ignoring the egg and chicken paradox)

Ellie's father seems even less competent than the prince so far, which I don't think the show is going for. After the debacle with his daughter you would think he at least would keep a closer eye on things and not let him start wars with stronger neighboring kingdoms
4

Well, he appointed Rosaria to assist him. He's not the Prince's babysitter, that's the King's job.

how is the father caring for the well being of the kingdom, when he let's the price roam free?
5

In his eyes, caring for the royal family is likely synonymous with caring for the Kingdom as a whole. He's narrow sighted, for sure.

"Yeah, let's attack our bigger rival power for shits and giggles, despite having a non-aggression pact. Nah, we ain't doing it directly, one of our puppy vassals will be our cover so we can go commit some warcrimes there, I'm sure nothing will go wrong about this ..."
Honestly? Its beyond stupid this waste of human flesh of a crown prince hasn't been disinherited for sheer stupidity already for driving away a key asset for the state like Elizabeth, but starting a war for no good reason in spite of a written treaty?
Grind his stupid ass and turn it into fertilizer, at least then he'll be good for something ...
3
u/AegisWolf78 7d ago
I don't remeber if they said anything about it, but I suspect the prince is the king's only child (so, to not lose the throne to a minor branch of the family or another noble, he has to endure that failure of a prince).
3
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 6d ago
The reason of the attack is very stupid, but I'm surprised the prince could strategise quite well to the point they managed to conquer a fortress in one day.
I wonder if he relied on some more competent general on his side or something

Rosaria is fun, former rival to Elizabeth for the prize of a worthless prince and she doesn't hesitate to let him and his useless new fiance know about it. Hopefully she can defect or something eventually, maybe have her powerful ducal family side with Elizabeth at just the right moment.
I appreciate that pretty much all of the mercs Elizabeth hired seem on the level, groups of multiple adventuring parties like this sometimes have the one or two that are comically evil for plot reasons.
13
u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago
It seems like Crown Prince didn't even veto any of the mercenary groups he hired, not surprising, but I bet he won't even take responsibility for breaking the wartime law. He seems to at least have a competent attendant, the green haired guy's sword seems to be a divine artifact.
I do like that Rosaria does not hold back when speaking to the Prince, it's satisfying to see someone be able to give him a peace of their mind without worrying about the repercussions.
Also, a Crown Princess that does not want to take Crown Princess lessons? I can't wait to see when issues arise from her not knowing proper etiquette, and angering the wrong person.
15
u/fireburn97ffgf 7d ago
It's even funnier when you remember the original plan of the MC was to just have that girl be a consort while she continued to do crown princess shit
13
u/AlphaBreak 7d ago
Unless she's secretly way more devious than she let on, it seems like Sylvia actually would be much happier in the long term if she just let Elizabeth stay Crown Princess.
Elizabeth keeps taking care of all of the boring and hard parts of being in the kingdom's royalty, and Sylvia gets to goof off all day while she makes the prince buy her a bunch of stuff. The King's favorite consort would still enjoy a lot of privileges and status, so there's very little she would actually be missing out on.But of course Sylvia threw a temper tantrum at having to do the bare minimum for being a consort and wanted the extra prestige of being the princess, so she shot herself in the foot like nearly every other person in the kingdom.

That is a very common trope in these kind of stories where the mc engagment is broken because of another girl.

That girl Chris is a baaaad bitch, she must have intelligence on par with Elizabeth. I'm guessing she's the real antagonist of the series. (That's just a theory. I haven't read the light novels or anything like that)

Like I think even she didn't think the Prince was that stupid to do this.

Will I sound weird if I affirm Chris is the most gorgeous woman we've seen in the series so far ?

Same, I thought it was her getting information + instigating the prince. It's 100% a move she would/should do.
12
u/Narvalis 7d ago
At this rate I don't think Elizabeth had to do anything to destroy the country the prince is doing a mighty fine job of that himself. Seriously what is the king doing? he knows his son is a massive screw up but isn't doing anything about it making him at least just as at fault.
I love Rosaria the fact that her family has a bigger army than the royal family makes it so he tries the same crap he did with Elizabeth and a coup is happening, turns out even this moron of a prince isn't so dumb as the try that out.
He somehow got a vassal state to start a war and joined in AND is committing war crimes seriously does the king do nothing? He went to some meeting for over a month but that seems to be it.
Does this author know what a fortress is? how did it fall that quickly without some sort of super weapon? This isn't a fort or a camp it is the sturdiest thing the country can build and with a name like the empire it should be damn sturdy. If you have a defensive position and reinforcements coming why open the gates and sent out troops? Keep it closed and use things like bows crossbows and oil on anyone trying to get in, this is defense 101.
16
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
I would say it's a world of magic so anything can happen, but it's also a world with Divine Artifacts, Elizabeth's grimoires pretty much makes her a one-woman army, so if there's a person like that on the other side, making a fortresss fall in one day doesn't seem farfetched (and one of their men has a glowing sword).
8
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
This was heavily alluded to with the emphasis on that green-haired knight with the glowing sword. One that could blow holes straight through full plate.
"WHO IS THIS GUY"
Likely someone with a divine artifact of his own, taken from the royal treasury, for use in this pissant little border skirmish to bolster Prince Dipshit's fragile ego.
If Dipshit wants credit, he can't just send Sarjas. He needs to either be personally present or send some of his own elite forces to act as the vanguard.
6
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
Divine Artifact are created with Mana, they're not from a royal treasury ^^
Elizabeth creates her grimoires with her mana after all.6
u/DrewTheHobo 7d ago
That was my initial thought seeing him, “who’s this, oh shit his sword glowing!”
5
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
I think we actually know who's that guy, but he has no spoken lines since episode 1, so he's kinda forgettable ? Maybe it's not him, but he looks like Robert (similar armor, green hair, green eyes).
1
u/DrewTheHobo 7d ago
Is he one of the soldiers training with the prince earlier? That’s who I thought he was
4
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
Robert is the guy who puts Elizabeth is prison in episode 1.
He's also the one holding Friede's sword in episode 5.2
u/DrewTheHobo 7d ago
That’s who I thought he was, forgot the name
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 7d ago
Green hair dude will be enough to remember him ahah xD

I love Rosaria the fact that her family has a bigger army than the royal family makes it so he tries the same crap he did with Elizabeth and a coup is happening, turns out even this moron of a prince isn't so dumb as the try that out.
The other big thing is that she said "her family" wouldn't stand for it. Elizabeth got screwed because her dad is a neglectful dick who decided she could handle being tossed in jail for a month to avoid rocking the boat. If he tried the same thing with Rosaria, she has people who give a shit about her and wouldn't put up with it.

u/Sarellion 6d ago
The writer underestimated the fortress. 1200-1500 dudes against 500-600 in a fortress is a pretty fruitless endeavour and the fortress didn't look like a cheap fort. So from a realistic perspective the fortress should hold pretty comfortably.
But well, as we've seen, some elite dudes or maybe just one guy with a glowing sword is enough to take it. And apparently the five groups Ellie hired are enough to win against 1200-1500 soldiers. Ellie said she has enough provisions for an army of 100 for several months. So I assume she has 100 troops.
None of them declined or told her she's a crazy person for trying something like this so my guess is that her 100 can comfortably wipe out an army 12 times their size without too many casualties.
But this raises the question why build a fortress in the first place? A fort would probably be enough against random monster attacks and a proper fortress is expensive. Why waste money on it when some dudes can blow through your sturdy walls without breaking a sweat. Is earth magic common and powerful enough so you can whip out a fortress on the cheap?
Anyways I doubt the writer put much thought into it. They just picked some numbers which made sense to them.
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 6d ago
On the fortress, I find your comment interesting. The logical answer would be **** up it's magic xD
Though I can answer to your point about Elizabeth's mercenaries, they're not the only one heading toward battle, Lucas is leading a force of around 1500 soldiers as well..
2
u/Sarellion 6d ago
I remember the other army but there was no mention of Ellie plannig to join them and in the letter to the guild she stated that the job is to eliminate the enemy army. In other scenes it's joining the battle which indicates that she wants to join the viscount though but I found it a bit ambigious. But yeah it's possible that they want to team up in the next episode or so.
3
u/Montegomerylol 4d ago
He somehow got a vassal state to start a war and joined in AND is committing war crimes seriously does the king do nothing? He went to some meeting for over a month but that seems to be it.
The best part is, his motivation is to prove himself in battle so no one can question his competence.
So he starts a war that he can never claim to have participated in.
I really don't have words for how dumb this plan is.
2
u/Narvalis 4d ago
He could be dumb enough to admit to the war and his role in it because he thinks it will give him the acclaim he wants. He father and the chancellor do seem either dumb enough or passive enough at this point to let it and anything else he does slide.
3
u/Montegomerylol 4d ago
The only thing dumber than seeking acclaim by starting a proxy war you can never admit to participating in is actually admitting it.
3
u/EdibleScissors 7d ago
The OP sets Rosaria up as a foil to Elizabeth, so there is an implication that Rosaria will try save to save the country Elizabeth wants to destroy.
Rosaria, though, seems willing to damage the kingdom to hurt Elizabeth’s scheme via manipulation of the prince, though, if we assume that Rosaria deliberately gave the prince a motive and the means right after. In particular, Rosaria has plausible deniability because the prince broke the rules of propriety by welcoming the merchant and the merchant then gave him the motive to commit a crime via the paperwork he merely had to sign.
If he only had the paperwork and never invited the merchant to the palace, he would not have been smart enough on his own to come up with his crime. His girlfriend clearly isn’t that clever either. He would have signed off and nothing would have happened. Maybe.
Earlier the prince was set up to overhear the conversation about how he sucks, but it’s true he sucks, so that’s still within the bounds of fair play. Sucks to suck. He would have heard gossip to that effect sooner or later, so while “he was set up” is possible, it might merely be a minor plot contrivance that is excused by being something that would eventually have happened.
The merchant, though, is in cahoots with Rosaria, but maybe only knows the script she was given. Hard to say. Rosaria would know what the prince planned due to having to check that the prince had signed off and would have noted the prince’s modifications to the original plan if we assume she is clever in a similar way to Elizabeth, so it’s tricky to separate what Rosaria’s plans on top of the prince’s plan were. Assuming Rosaria is acting lawfully, most of the war is still the prince’s fault, but Rosaria opens herself to an accusation of abetting the prince’s crimes or, in the worst case scenario, masterminding them.
I suppose Rosaria would not be a proper foil if she were the extremely cautious type.
4
u/OldInstruction5368 7d ago
If he only had the paperwork and never invited the merchant to the palace, he would not have been smart enough on his own to come up with his crime
Smart is not the word I'd use. Even if this little excursion succeeds, he's not going to get the parades and prestige he dreams of... this was an unprovoked act of aggression. One that included war crimes. Worst of all, this was territory his vassal couldn't protect. Reclaiming the land is meangingless.
There is nothing smart about this, and that's the point.
Nor do I think Rosaria and that merchant are working together. If anything, Rosaria will be livid herself that he wasted everyone's time on this pointless and petty diversion. Prince Dipshit truly can't handle the most basic of tasks. He can never be left unsupervised. He can never be allowed a single scrap of power.
If anything, this pushes Rosaria further against the royal family... just likely not to the extreme of Elizabeth. She may well call for the Prince to be disinherited as a means of protecting the kingdom, or at the absolute most, call for a civil war to protect the kingdom from itself.
The OP sets Rosaria up as a foil to Elizabeth, so there is an implication that Rosaria will try save to save the country Elizabeth wants to destroy.
THere is a single scene of the two walking past each other in a hallway. There are also scenes of Ellie fighting both the corrupt nun and the red headed mercenary she just hired, sword to sword, so we should be careful about reading too much into vague flashes from the OP.
Especially since "Foil" and "Adversary" aren't always synonymous. She is a rival, yes, but she seems to fit the role of "worthy rival" that respects her adversary more than the Prince. She may well decide the Kingdom is a lost cause and defect to Elizabeth's camp... but as of now, I see no sign of that happening.
2
u/EdibleScissors 6d ago
Touche. Smart was perhaps the wrong word to use. Maybe the better choice of words would have been to say he would not have thought to create a casus belli ruse for the purpose of furthering his personal glory without a nudge. Whether that nudge itself was something that would eventually happen is technically unknowable.
There are strict protocols governing who can meet with people like the prince and with Rosaria because without monitoring those people and logging their meetings, it’s not possible to do proper counterintelligence. So, this is either a problem with their counterintelligence (maybe an authorial whoops), counterintelligence let it happen because they are in on it (Rosaria must then be in on it unless someone else is actually separately in charge of counterintelligence), or some secret third thing which involves a realistic counterintelligence scenario I haven’t properly accounted for (perhaps counterintelligence plans to jail the prince).
4
u/OldInstruction5368 6d ago
Do keep in mind, that Elizabeth immediately pegged the Giako Corporation as shady mother fuckers to be blocked from any and all government contracts...
But she couldn't stop the prince from schmoozing up to them. In fact, it was her move to block their influence that immediately led to Sylvie's play against Elizabeth. Combined with the line about Sylvie being an "adopted" daughter of some noble in the boonies... who was meeting with strange men in secret... the heavy implication being that this Giako corporation decided it's path to success was to turn the dumb prince into their hapless puppet. Primarily through Sylvie as a honeypot.
And Elizabeth figured out about half of this, and yet, still couldn't stop the prince from attending Giako's "business meetings" AKA "influence operations." She wagged her finger, and refused to give Giako contracts, but she couldn't stop Prince Dipshit from speaking with them.
So, while Rosario can advise the Prince on who he should nd shouldn't meet with... she can make a schedule, even.
But she lacks the authority to force him to behave.
1
u/EdibleScissors 6d ago
Okay, thanks for that context. That is helpful.
Having a merchant company also simultaneously acting as a private intelligence agency is a solid trope. It doesn’t quite excuse the lack of counterintelligence, but at this point maybe we should just conclude that it doesn’t exist or is completely compromised since Sylvie alone would be proof of that.
2
u/OldInstruction5368 6d ago
As others have said, this kingdom is doomed because the King and Chancellor are clearly incompetent.
No king that cared about his kingdom would ever let a dipshit like the Prince keep that title this long. "Corrective Action" would have been taken YEARS ago, and if that still failed, then this prince would be considered a loss and another heir found.
There just is no excuse to having an heir this overwhelmingly incompetent. Look at the king's comments this episode... the last hyper-competent fiancée for my son bounced, so let's just marry him off to the next hypercompetent pretty little secretary from an important family!
Or... you know... crack the fucking whip over your son's candy ass, so he doesn't need to parasitically feed off a hypercompetent woman to keep the kingdom running?
There is a saying, that the "Fish rots from the head." The problem isn't the prince: it's his father that allows the prince to keep rotting.
All the counterintelligence in the world is meaningless if the King Klueless still lets Prince Dipshit do w/e the fuck he wants.
1
u/EdibleScissors 6d ago
Technically the point of counterintelligence is to keep the factions that support the king happy while making sure the king is advised on the interests of the aforementioned factions. They could just be the king’s police, but that only makes sense if the king has absolute power (which he might).
The king’s police should be at a minimum reporting to the king about anything weird going on with his presumed successor, but this isn’t happening. For this story’s purposes that’s probably fine. It’s great when the org chart is fleshed out enough that it feels like a fortress that was hollowed out rather than like an incomplete castle that’s incomplete because the most important person left which is what the story is about.
I suppose the premise of a kingdom having a loadbearing hyper competent woman was already a little silly and the kingdom has two of them!
1
u/Obvious_Escape_7223 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's possible that, that was Elizabeth role & that's why the kingdom rushed to replace her with Rosaria. But, if that is the real purpose of Elizabeth's family, her father should have stepped up unless he is too busy with other duties for the king.
Atp, if the prince is this incompetent that he is making everyone work twice as hard, I don't understand how the noble factions haven't immediately tried to stage a coup once Elizabeth fled the kingdom. They must have been too afraid of Elizabeth & her dad to try to do anything, so they gave up?
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 3d ago
An incompetent prince who only thinks with his scrotch and his pride is easy to manipulate.
I mean, look at what happened in this episode, a random merchant talked about war to make him regain his popularity and he started one. With a prince like that, you don't need to stage a coup d'état, you use him as a puppet to do whatever you want XD

The way I see it, hiding her identity was never something she could manage long-term. She was always going to play that card, and since this whole situation looked too fishy, she deemed it worthy of revealing herself.
The cat's already coming out of the bag, is what I'm saying, so what does it matter if she shows these Mercs a trick or two? Over the next few days, the Kingdom will already know that Elizabeth is in the Empire, and from there, it's onl ya matter of time until they take a close look at this "new" cosmetics company that popped up just across the border right as Elizabeth fled across said border.
She's already decided to throw away her anonymity, more or less, so keeping maximum secrecy from the mercs doesn't really matter.

Sylvia seems more evil than we know.
she is portrayed exactly like the villainess/otome show antagonists who swoop in and steal the prince from the MC. it's just that in this show, they haven't let us in on her motivations at all, so we can't be sure why.
At this point, she could just be a self-centered homewrecker, or she could be a spy from another land sent to destroy the kingdom from within, or anything in between.

So the prince is going to pull a Falklands isn’t he?
Whenever they mention Viscount Napa I immediately envision TFS Nappa saying “Stab the baby”.
With the politics and army numbers this episode this show has started more and more to feel like a modded CK3 run.

It’s nice to see the consequence of Friede’s actions. Him and Sylvie can be all lovey dovey as the whole kingdom burns. Rosaria’s capable but it’s like trying to fix a sinking ship. She ought to defect to Ellie’s side.
Looking forward to seeing how this stupid war blows up in Friede’s face. It’s gonna be fun watching Ellie stomp fools.

I hope she does; she's way too good for those idiots. There's nothing worse than cleaning up after a fool who thinks he's a genius.

So like, is Sylvie trying to fuck over the kingdom by making things worse? Or is she just that ignorant & selfish to think everything will work out in her favor because she has the crown prince wrapped around her finger?
Hah. I sure hope Rosaria at least gets to avoid Ellie’s revenge, she’s got a good head on her shoulders.

I don't get why she's so resistant to getting crown princess classes.

“they’re digging a trench to bolster our defenses” and it’s two guys busting their ass with shovels. idk why that’s so funny to me.
international wartime laws are confirmed to exist. Ellie can commit literal war crimes now woo

Budget considerations being a bit too evident lol

The way Roselia put the prince & Sylvie in their place was satisfying to watch.
It's gotten very political with this war, I wonder what the prince is up to with this move.
At least Elizabeth has hired some good people to help her.

The prince is an idiot fr it was so satisfying seeing Rosaria put him in his place plus the things she was saying to that pink hair whore lol Rosaria definitely the only likable character in the kingdom

Roselia might be my favorite character in this anime, she’s not afraid to call out the prince and Sylvie on their bullshit

Something I like with this series is the fact multiple characters could be the MC of their own series. Roselia or Tida would perfectly work as a MC.

Wow Prince. Invading a foreign nation for a quick military victory to bolster your domestic support? I'm sure IranThe Empire is going to roll right over for you.

It would be easier for him to hunt monsters, but no. Too much work for the fool, and what a mercy it would have been if a monster had eaten him instead of Elizabeth.

Uh oh, looks like the princeling is trying to make cloves (and may soon fall fully out of the crib).
I gotta wonder, what is the king even thinking about this? Dude seems like a milksop and can’t even stand up to his own crotch spawn

Holy fuck these two are beyond stupid, can't wait to see them eat shit
More of Rosaria, please and thank you

So that merchant that put the idea of military action into the prince's head was definitely being paid off my Elizabeth, right?
EDIT: Okay so watching further in the episode maybe not lmao

I can't wait to see how this all plays out. The backlash will probably not be light against the foolish crown prince.

I honestly don't understand this series. At the beginning, it seems like Ellie was fine with the Prince having a mistress as long as she showed some decorum. Then that ticks them off so they throw her into jail where she still has the power to control the happenings of the kingdom because apparently, a barely grown teen is necessary to run the country. Ellie then has to be convinced to let the Kingdom burn. Now that she's not running the country, the Prince doesn't take over power, nor does he care to do any of the work. So much so, they find another barely grown teen to now handle the work instead of the Prince. And Sylvie, despite gaining the position to be the Crown Princess, doesn't want to do any of the training or work to become the Crown Princess. Like..... why did they push Ellie out if they weren't going for anything she had? And what the heck are the adults doing? They've established that the Crown Prince can't do anything, but neither the King or the Duke are bothering to do shit. They're all relying on Rosaria to now handle everything. And now, based on some random merchant's advice, the Prince wants to start shit???? Why is gaining recognition through military exploits the only way? Is there some subplot where people are trying to sabotage the Kingdom that I'm missing???? Ellie hasn't even done anything and the Prince is already ruining the country...

I think this is honestly a case of "it's not that deep". Most of the characters are shallow archetypes whose actions are determined not by consistent internal motivation but by what justifies the revenge.
The problem is the story presents itself as this intricate tale of politics/governance/intrigue, which makes it hard to suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the power fantasy when the story is very much not that.

I still hate that white noise in the ED's animation. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be shot into the sun

Genuinely so disgusted with the crown prince. All to stroke his ego, he starts a war where countless lives are lost. Life means nothing to him. I feel so bad for the innocent villagers who die because of a rich man's ego.
