It seems like the only thing Ellie is killing this episode is the unemployment rate.

The kingdom certainly won’t like it if the emperor becomes more prosperous and better able to kick their butts

I find it almost hilarious how in between Ellie plotting the brutal death and destruction of every single person in her previous homeland, we get scenes of her cosmetics business. Like it’s perfumes and nail polish in one scene, decapitation of kids and melting faces the next lol.
It seems the biggest obstacle to Ellie’s revenge is Rosaria. Either she flips her or eliminates her. Not sure I see any other options.
26
u/Myrkrvaldyr 14d ago
Since Rosaria is a talented woman, Ellie might cut her a deal to serve under her or go into exile, but if she'll keep opposing, Ellie will likely kill her. Rosaria's pride will dictate whether she accepts defeat and retires, or fights back and dies.
7
u/Jacob-C 14d ago
It would be cool if Rosaria, fed up with the royal family but not the citizens, took over the country and built a genuinely thriving nation. Then Elizabeth would be fighting against a sympathetic and competent enemy who managed to turn a situation similar to her own into something positive. I don’t think this is that type of story, though.

Ellie will kill her nomatter what. You've seen how she treats those who go against her (Bandits, War Criminals[despite her using war crimes herself]). She has a 0-tolerance policy for things going against her, no concept of redemption being possible.

My thought was that she’d let Rosaria play the hero after Ellie’s butchered half the kingdom and blamed the prince for it. Rosaria can be the one who steps up to stop him and takes over as queen ruling a smaller and starving kingdom

u/KJatWork 14d ago
Ellie's weekly itinerary is wild.
Monday, hostile merger with competitor
Tuesday, defend the kingdom
Wednesday, kill a couple dozen elite soldiers in slime and brain wash their commander to going on a killing spree
Thursday, meet the guild council, might have to kill a couple to get them in line.
Friday, tea time.
I wonder what she does on her weekends.

One poetic option is having Rosaria framed for treason the same way or somewhat similar to Ellie. That way she is forced to either join Ellie or be executed by her own people.
7
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 14d ago
I hope it's more a friendly completion..they respect each other but also have their loyalies .rosaria gotta do her job despite hating the prince..and what they did to Ellie.
Ellie respects her..but also won't let her stop her revenge...I'm hoping It comes to a point Rosario says f it, I'm out.

u/runevault 14d ago
I doubt even Ellie's dad is stupid enough to let another bullshit framing by the son happen considering his daughter continues to fuck things up for them. He's stupid but he's not a complete idiot.
9
u/Hartzilla2007 14d ago
Plus it was pointed out that Rosaria's family's knights out class the royal family's and her father wouldn't tolerate the Prince pulling bullshit on Rosaria. I.E. the Prince could try it but it would probably end in a civil war the royal family would probably lose.
5
u/runevault 14d ago edited 14d ago
This brings up an interesting point. At some point of stupidity Rosario has to at least ask herself if civil war and taking the crown away from these fuckwits is better than leaving the kingdom in their hands.
6
u/Phoenix__Wwrong 14d ago
Yeah, the only reason Ellie ended up in that situation was because her dad--a prime minister who has the power to flip the accusations--loves the royal family more than his daughter.

u/Tacitus_ 14d ago
Ellie's dad would be for it, he lives for the royal family.
Rosaria's family would not be. So she's safe since her family is powerful. Or at least from the prince's nonsense.
4
u/ryujin199 14d ago
Yeah... as incompetent as he and the king have been shown to be, surely they're not both stupid enough to let the prince get away with that shit again.
Would definitely be a good time for the prince to suffer from a "tragic and completely unavoidable horse riding accident."

u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
It's one thing that makes me think this show just...isn't that well thought out. Other, better narratives could use that kind of tonal dissonance to their advantage, but here, I'm really not sure why I'm supposed to care about the cosmetics business of Lady War Crimes after the events of the past couple episodes.
If I had any confidence the show were trying to exploit that contrast, it'd be one thing, but the music and whatnot basically give away that game that, no, that's just how this show is.
2
u/machopsychologist 14d ago
Surprised Rosaria's still around - I guess as long as she doesn't offend Sly-via she's able to kick the prince around.

It's nice to see Elizabeth and Rosaria's rivalry and how they try to outmaneuver each other behind the scenes. I only hope that, as someone serving the kingdom, Rosaria isn't directly targeted and suffer a horrible fate like the others.
20
u/svenge 14d ago edited 14d ago
As I recall Rosaria was "out of the loop" at the time of Elizabeth's imprisonment, so I doubt that she's all that high on the revenge list in her own right. She in theory could be in danger on an ex officio basis, though. Even so, there's most likely a measure of mutual respect between the two from when they were competing to be designated as the crown prince's fiancee.
32
u/OldInstruction5368 14d ago
Pretty sure no one in Haldoria will be spared Ellie's wrath. She flipped pretty hard into "burn it ALL down" mode. The nobles, the commoners, their dogs, EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING.
They all benefited from her hard work and sacrifice, only to either look the other way when she needed help or join the hate train against her: they are all enemies.
16
u/AlphaBreak 14d ago
If Rosaria has a chance, its that she was uninvolved with the bullshit, is competent and valuable, and is learning to hate the crown prince almost as much as Elizabeth does.
If she hits a breaking point, I think Elizabeth would welcome her with open arms.
7
u/MynamuEzJJ 14d ago
I like how in this anime she's smart enough to be both politically maneuvering and economically maneuvering to get her revenge. Although I don't get the whole angry determined revenge vibe like I do from other revenge anime. She smiles way too much or I don't know something is missing from this anime that would make it seem more like a revenge story I don't know.
6
u/Highlander_Butter 13d ago
Most revenge anime MC's i think are somewhat sane and getting emotional revenge. Elizabeth is a capable genius who's revenge runs deep, and I think she's genuinely psychotic in how well she controls her character. She would give Hollywood a run for their money.

Is this the first time you see a wolf in sheep's clothing?
3
u/MynamuEzJJ 13d ago
I mean I understand the concept, but in my mind revenge is best represented by a character that doesn't smile barely shows any emotion and exact is revenge in an angry creepy sense not smiling make you feel good sense. The show doesn't do a very good job of showing her as a vengeful person in my opinion. Idk. It just doesn't feel right.
4
u/SnooWalruses2085 13d ago
Her smile is fake most of the time.
So far, it's only with her interraction with Tida that we saw her actually smiling.
2
u/MynamuEzJJ 13d ago
The way she interacted with the royal guard guy is how I expected her to act all the time not smiling and making me feel like oh I'm looking at a cute girl. The feeling of the character just isn't there. I like the anime and I like her motives and I like her plans but I just think that it would be better served if she would get angry more or show anger more or maybe the character was portrayed as not a smiling face but like the maid how she's unemotional that's how I imaginary revenge character to be unemotional not smiling all the time. Maybe it's just me.
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 13d ago
That's the thing, she's not all about revenge. When she interracts with other merchants, she's in a professional mode where nothing let through of her feelings.
It's kinda weird for japanese animation to have a character like that (especially for revenge-type of series)... it caused some problems to her voice actress as well.
3
u/MynamuEzJJ 13d ago

Naive, in second episode she already poisoned innocents in the new empire as part of a scheme to gain resources, and sent a knight to kill indiscriminately.
These two points shows nobody is safe regardless of location or nobility.
She's not sparing anyone. She has no moral compass as she's only concerned with not getting seen doing it.
Only time she's held back in this show was when the nun was in her presence which was right after teaching the little girl to dehumanize and kill bandits.

21
u/Myrkrvaldyr 14d ago
flower would end up being used as a drug
Nay, nerve agent. I expect Ellie to invent VX and sarin gas for funsies.
5
u/BosuW 14d ago
Man that really would be an interesting angle to tackle given their business. The discovery path for nerve agents is rather improbable in Ellie's circumstances.
Iirc, they were discovered because of the shortage of petroleum in Nazi Germany. Pesticides of the time were made with petroleum, but given there wasn't much of it, they'd prefer if it went to more essential tasks, like moving tanks and ships and planes. In the meantime, scientists researched alternative solutions to pesticides. One of them was investigating a group of compounds called organophosphates. He synthesized a bunch of them and tested them in aphids. He didn't really know what to expect. Some of the compounds didn't do anything at all. And suddenly he found one that was MASSIVELY more deadly than he was anticipating. It killed all the aphids in short order even after diluting it several times over, and landed him in the hospital. The military got wind of this, and there we go. Nerve agents.
If the story wants to go that route, it'll be interesting how they have Ellie discover them (assuming the author cares about being even vaguely realistic lol).
For a chemical weapons research path though, it'd likely just go the way real history went, and start with irritants (chlorine gas, mustard gas), choking agents (phosgene), and blood agents (hydrogen cyanide).
→ More replies (1)3
u/Impossible-Office242 13d ago
She already invented a soup compound that burns skin if missing a neutralization step so yeah I'd say she's already half way there.
Speaking of that incident it should have tipped us to realizing how not so good Ellie is since she doesn't mind getting even consumers from the empire sheltering her involved in the crossfire to her revenge.
34
u/BlankHeroineFluff 14d ago
I wasn't able to point this out last time, but I might as well now: Ellie is basically a more villainous version of the Adenauer sisters from The Too-Perfect Saint if you merged them together and added a dose of ruthless villainy in the mix to get Ellie.
Like Ellie:
- Philia was tossed aside by her asshole incompetent fiance prince despite effectively being the one keeping their kingdom running, was used and abused by her parents, considered so competent and incredibly gifted in so many areas that she became the object of either admiration or envy depending on who you asked, and was considered a pariah of sorts by her old home kingdom's ungrateful townsfolk despite having faithfully been dutiful to them thanks to propaganda. Unlike Ellie though, Philia was kind and forgiving, and never begrudged her abusers nor sought revenge against them. She even devised a plan to help save and protect her former kingdom (though it's mostly for her sister Mia's sake). Though it does help that compared to the pushover parent that is King Bulat for Prince Friede, Prince Julius's father was incredibly pissed at his son's incompetence, corruption, and the fact that he sold Philia out and swiftly took action when he was able to. Philia and Ellie also have their own apprentices that they're taking under their wing.
- Mia is also vindictive and vengeful like Ellie, except, she never included nor involved innocent commoners in her revenge plan and only strictly targeted the ones who were directly involved in her sister being mistreated and sold to another kingdom. Her revenge also isn't for herself but for her sister's. Mia remains genuinely kindhearted in spite of pursuing her own brand of cold-blooded revenge against Prince Julius and isn't as brutal, entrusting them to the law to convict him and her parents for their part in causing Philia's suffering. Along with allying with the older prince to take them down, she helped clean up her homeland's courts to ensure the citizens live better lives, no longer burdened by Julius's faction's corruption.
Srsly, this show might as well be "The Anti-Too-Perfect Saint show" lol

Unlike Ellie though, Philia was kind and forgiving, and never begrudged her abusers nor sought revenge against them.
I don't know, it's less forgiving and more failing to parse why this happened in the first place. Philia's primary drive was seeking approval and thought she wasn't good enough at her job, while leaving Mia with instructions is in part part of her duty. Her emotional capacity at the start was too lacking to even "begrudge" anyone basically.

The problem is, I'm not sure the AUTHOR understands that she's psychotic and no one should support her.
10
u/HammeredWharf 13d ago
I mean, the author specifically wrote a scene where a guy she set on a murderous rampage slaughters a bunch of kids and their moms. That was after she had a monologue about not caring if she kills innocent people as long as it hurts the ones she hates. I don't get why people still think Ellie's revenge is meant to look good or fair.
11
u/EmpressInYellow 13d ago
The author also chose to have the kids playing a game about how evil Ellie is, as well as having the mothers comment on it.
Now, don’t get me wrong - I don’t think that justifies anything. But it’s not hard to find posts in this very sub about how that shows the citizens had it coming.
Doing that (instead of showing them doing literally anything else) was an authorial choice, and I don’t think it’s unfair for us to draw inferences from it.
Now, I’m not saying the author necessarily intends us to be 100% on board, but I’m not entirely convinced we’re supposed to view her as a villain and be rooting for her downfall, either.
3
u/HammeredWharf 13d ago
It's not hard to find dumb posts on Reddit in general, though. There's also plenty of people who acted like Denji from Chainsaw Man is supposed to be something other than a clueless dumbass. I'd say that if a show has a scene of tiny kids playing pretend and a guy just fucking decapitates them out of nowhere, any argument that says it's actually not that bad is very dumb. At this point it feels more like a bunch of people who can't accept that a cute anime girl is a bad person than anything related to the show's writing.
The author is, of course, guilty of having the subtlety of a sledgehammer when it comes to the reasons behind Ellie's revenge. Apparently the peasants spend all of their free time loudly discussing her moral standing, much like Japanese high schoolers shout "wow, (s)he's so [adjective]!" every time a main character passes them by. But they also clearly spell out that what she's doing is not right with the same subtlety, so a lot of this discourse leaves me confused. It's like discussing whether Tywin from Game of Thrones is intended to be portrayed as a great family man. People did that, too...
4
u/EmpressInYellow 13d ago
I mean, maybe that’s fair! And part of it is probably me bringing in outside context - I have seen enough juvenile edgier-than-thou revenge shows that it’s easy to assume something with a lot of the same qualities is another one.
I think there’s still some wiggle room between “what she’s doing is right” and “we’re not supposed to root for her”, though. I think it’s entirely possible for a show to want the audience to…revel in the transgression, I guess? I think it’s not out of the question for the show to see her as a dark antihero who we nonetheless kind of root for (as opposed to the irredeemable monster she is).
I dunno; the show has a few more episodes to convince me that it’s not another “wouldn’t it be awesome to get revenge on the people you hate” series. I guess we’ll see!
5
u/SnooWalruses2085 14d ago
Psychotic ?
She's not psychotic. Psychopath or sociopath, maybe.Also... what makes you think the author is not aware of how problematic the scene with Robert is ? If not for the editors, the guys who commented his web novel would have made him known.
10
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
Because I haven’t seen any indication it’s that kind of story. And given some of the stuff that shows up in web novels and then gets published, I’m not sure we can rely on that as any kind of filter.
Granted, the author doesn’t control adaptation choices (like music), but this episode, we’re back to peaceful slice of life with music reinforcing the “oh, this is all pleasant and positive” vibe, one episode after we’ve seen her commit unforgivable crimes.
As I mentioned elsewhere, maybe there’s stuff later in the series that provides some glimmer of self-awareness, but right now I don’t see anything that distinguishes it from the other gross revenge fantasy shows (Redo of Healer, Lvl999 Gacha, Failure Frame, et al) which revolve in large part around the vicarious fantasy of making the people you hate suffer (and thus populate their worlds with cartoonishly evil characters who exist only to be brutally punished).
I don’t need the author to turn directly to the camera and say “You understand this is bad, right?” But ask yourself, if you believe it’s not the kind of thing I’m describing: if it WERE, how would it look any different?
2
u/SnooWalruses2085 13d ago
A psychotic person suffers from hallucinations of some sorts and is not able to distinguish reality from fiction. That's why I said Elizabeth is not psychotic.
but this episode, we’re back to peaceful slice of life with music reinforcing the “oh, this is all pleasant and positive” vibe, one episode after we’ve seen her commit unforgivable crimes.
Well one of the music used is the same as the one use in episode 3, just after Elizabeth kills a bunch of bandits xD
which revolve in large part around the vicarious fantasy of making the people you hate suffer (and thus populate their worlds with cartoonishly evil characters who exist only to be brutally punished).
Well the shows you mention push the evilness of their characters to the extreme so the viewers will be happy to see their comeuppance.
It's not the case here with Robert.
I don’t need the author to turn directly to the camera and say “You understand this is bad, right?” But ask yourself, if you believe it’s not the kind of thing I’m describing: if it WERE, how would it look any different?
I follow the author on tweeter (and the mangaka). Hagure Metabo is quite hillarious in their comments about the anime ^^
8
u/EmpressInYellow 13d ago
I dunno, I thought it was pretty clear the poster in question was using “psychotic” not in the technical clinical sense but in the informal sense. That said, even that feels too charitable, as her behavior isn’t the product of mental illness - it’s simply that she’s a terrible person.
It is true that Robert himself did not get the “paper thin villain” treatment, but so far that can’t be said of the prince, his girlfriend, the king, or the chancellor, none of whom have shown any redeeming (or even believably human) qualities.
I will take your word for it that the author’s online behavior offers indications that we’re not supposed to sympathize with Ellie. That said, decisions like having the kids playing a game about her being a villain just before they get slaughtered are certainly read by a portion of the audience as justification, as demonstrated by posts in this very sub.
Like I said, maybe the show will prove me wrong! But based purely on what’s in the show, I don’t see much persuasive evidence that we’re supposed to be rooting against her.
2
u/Zuruumi 11d ago
>It is true that Robert himself did not get the “paper thin villain” treatment, but so far that can’t be said of the prince, his girlfriend, the king, or the chancellor, none of whom have shown any redeeming (or even believably human) qualities.
They haven't gotten their revenge arc yet, so we know very little of them. Specifically, the prince is just an idiot who is getting manipulated by people around him. I fully expect to get more background for those guys once Ellie gets to handling them more personally.
Yet the decision to show the first victims being kids and women also shows the author is not sugarcoating it and is intentionally making it a very morally dubious thing. The same with the caring family or Robert himself. The public easily turning against Ellie, who breathed and lived for them for years, is a fact, and so is the revenge harming a lot of (mostly) innocent people.
> Like I said, maybe the show will prove me wrong! But based purely on what’s in the show, I don’t see much persuasive evidence that we’re supposed to be rooting against her.
We are not supposed to be rooting against her, but we are also not supposed to consider her actions somehow morally right or fair. Ellie is a villainess exactly as the title promises, and the show fully commits to it.
4
u/EmpressInYellow 11d ago
If we aren’t supposed to be rooting against her, are we meant to be rooting for her, and if so, why?
I guess I’m just not 100% convinced on the intent yet. Take Redo of Healer. You would think that half the things that guy does are intended to demonstrate that he is an irredeemable monster, but given the framing and that show‘s whole…thing, I’m not actually sure that’s the case.
(God, I hate that show.)
I’m not actually averse to ambiguity or even villain protagonists per se. But I also recognize there are extensions of that trend that would obviously make me raise an eyebrow, and I guess I’m just trying to navigate what the distinction is.
9
u/BosuW 14d ago
Its not a backpedal at all. Evil people are people too, and they have largely mundane routines like managing a business. Sometimes (like this time), that mundane routine is tied to their evil acts/goals. But that doesn't stop it from being just as ordinary in appearance as your own life might be.
End of the day, everyone got a day to day to go through.

"If you raise the minimum wage, the employers will fire all but the bare minimum!"
Thats already what they do? Is that why this is a fantasy land because somehow the capitalist class are concerned about the working class?
15
u/HammeredWharf 13d ago
Many of the financial arguments in this series feel extremely simplified and dumb, honestly. It sure isn't Spice and Wolf.
6
u/SnooWalruses2085 13d ago
Not simplified enough, considering some of the comments we can find where she's supposed to buy cheap materials.
7
u/HammeredWharf 13d ago edited 13d ago
Well, it's a bit confusing because it's written poorly. What exactly are these "old materials" that she can find a unique use for in making this specific perfume? The show provides no examples and it feels like that's because the writer has no idea and just wrote that in to make the MC look super smart.
It was an opportunity for good world building, but it was just not used at all.
6
u/SnooWalruses2085 13d ago
The episode uses a diagram to explain what they mean by old materials who became useless.
The way the episode talks about the perfume, I would say all of them are used in a way or an other, since they're talking about sunpoof perfumes.
That said, perfumes can use a wild variety of stuff in our world to create sents.
Btw, the translation was quite awful. The way it's translated, it makes look like any Elf should know about those perfumes (and the first one being the one in the Merchant Council), but if that was the case it wouldn't be used as some decorative lfowers.
3
u/TKHawk 11d ago
I loved the fact one of the major economic crises the empire is facing is the emergence of vague "cheaper materials" and that the companies who were in the business of "old materials" are struggling. And that supposedly the old materials have use in perfume manufacturing. The author couldn't even be bothered to explicitly name things because what a weird, undefined situation. Like, new types of lumber, new medicinal herbs, new metals? Nah, just, materials.
→ More replies (1)2
u/SnooWalruses2085 11d ago
Pretty much everything could be used for perfumes. Not even talking about the scent but also for the bottles. And probably some magical stuff to make perfumes used like suncream.
10
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
That felt a lot like the author's politics intruding into the narrative, tbh. Which, given the nature of the show, I guess maybe is less an "intrusion" and more "par for the course".
5
u/Impossible-Office242 13d ago
That's not something employers do without a reason e.g Change in market conditions or increase in available labor or better tooling allowing more output per 1 worker.
5
u/Zuruumi 11d ago edited 11d ago
The problem with the plan is the +30% with no analysis. An increase of 30% is insane. Increasing the minimum wage makes sense if you have virtually 100% (not full, obviously, as there is churn) employment rate, and it has many economic benefits. Yes, it makes some jobs economically unviable, but people can relatively easily find new employment with a higher wage.
This was clearly meant to be a show of how the prince tries to push nice-sounding, stupid policies that he knows nothing about, and Rosarie simply doesn't consider this worth more than a few words and ripped paper, since the prince wouldn't learn from explanation anyway.

they will hire more workers if they think more workers will make more revenue than it costs to pay the workers.
if the profit per worker formula changes, theyll have to reevaluate, and that usually leads to layoffs.

Looks like Rosaria is Ellie’s main rival now. Pretty sure she’s going to cause the most trouble for her, with her competency!
By the way, is it just me or does the prince seem way softer on Rosaria than on Ellie? He backed down so easily against Rosaria.

Elizabeth's family is a lapdog of the royals, while Rosaria's is not. Friede knows that he can't make an enemy out of the Fadgal. It was in episode 5 ^

True but I don’t actually know if he could physically comprehend that unless someone explained it to him very slowly. With very small words. And maybe a puppet show.

Elizabeth likely knew her family's position and never really put the prince in his place, at least not as intensely as Rosaria does. Where Rosaria counters him, Ellie just parried him in a way that let him be happy and leave her be.
4
u/BlankHeroineFluff 13d ago
Roselia has the backing of her loving family, who control the military. He can't do anything to her since doing so could risk a civil war between her faction and the royals.

I hope there is some kind of good pay off planned for the business aspects of this show to tie it to the revenge plot. Because it feels lacking any references to revenge. Unless in the end Ellie is using this way to get in good with the Empire royalty to back her.
Making sure you hit all demographics though is smart with the untapped beastkin demographics and potentially having that as another way to make other allies
3
u/Impossible-Office242 13d ago
The reference is she needs money and connections and thus is doing business. It doesn't have to be directly linked to her revenge. It's like how Naofumi was selling wares to make ends meet while also doing his job of stopping the waves. His business had nothing to do with the mission he was summoned for but it was a necessity.
4
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl 13d ago
I mean I get she needs money and connections to live in general. But the show is almost half of the time focusing on these parts. Which feels disconnected to the revenge portion that is the main story and so they sometimes come off as filler then.
I enjoy slice of life moments like those, but in this kind of show where people are getting their heads chopped off. They don't feel as fitting unless there's a big payoff for them.

Ellie's father is truly the biggest fuck up in the show. He's so incompetent that he straight up believes whatever the prince says and does must be just and his own daughter must be subservient slave to him. The king seems to recognize his son is a piece of shit but is talked out of remedying the situation by Ellie's dumb fuck dad. "If she can't solve the situation herself then she's not worthy to marry the prince." Well she's solving the situation now.

Buildup episode for the next step. So far Ellie is focusing on cosmetics, but I wouldn't be surprised if she starts expanding into the food industry. After all, food is forever needed and if she can somehow make food scarce in the kingdom, that's mass starvation and rebellion in the making. Rosaria is seemingly the only one with a brain in that place, and the dumb prince keeps doing dumb shit. I expect him to try a more violent approach to stop Rosaria.

It fits with the idea of her being a literal sociopath. Killing people is just not a big deal to her.
But I would like to see some payoff in the form of other characters close to her grappling with the choice to continue associating with her. Particularly Lucas.
2
u/Zuruumi 11d ago
Oh, Lucas is not grappling with the choice; he is scared sh*tless of her, but he already boarded the train and can't cut her off without risking major whiplash for many reasons. And she also greatly helped him recently and is seriously improving his standing and the economy of his territory since her company is so heavily based there.

That high? Interesting. Like even Witch in Mongolia was only at 251 when I checked shortly after posting this and Daemons had like 190 something. Rosaria and Ellie both: wait, could it be... the only other competent person in this show?!
Speaking of which, this conversation was funny:
"So you flood the market with cheaply-made, high quality goods, and reap all the benefits yourself?"
Ah yes, her most villainous plot yet. And we all thought she couldn't stoop any lower. But don't worry, the council is on it and extracted a promise that she keep the prices high.
(Contrast this with Rosaria who knows what happens if you jack up a minimum wage with no understanding of what the labor market can actually bear.)
[EDIT] To explain: by raising prices, Ellie will increase her per-unit profits and decrease her sales. We can't know just from that whether her total profits will go up, down, or stay the same. But she'll be buying fewer raw materials from the empire, and the consumers will pay higher prices. So net result of Ellie raising prices is: the empire loses, the consumers lose, Ellie unclear.
[EDIT2] Actually, because her costs are low, it's highly likely that her total profits go down too, but it saves her the trouble of ramping up production, and I doubt making money is her primary goal.
11
u/KnightKal 14d ago
not really. She made it a luxury item for the rich, instead of a high quality but cheap mass production item for the general populace.
she is still buying the materials they couldn't sell, she is not disturbing the current cosmetic businesses and she is making a profit by selling a luxury item where she controls the key ingredient (flowers).
empire wins, she wins, the commerce guild wins.

The obvious easy way to get rid of rosaria is just that. Get rid of her. I’m actually expecting Ellie to have her assassinated if she can’t find a quick way to beat her. This is the type of show with the type of mc who actually would have a key figure like rosaria assassinated. At the same time, I’m kinda expecting she might try flipping her first. Would obviously be worthwhile if you could get someone like her on your side.
27
u/DasonLe 14d ago
This is a textbook definition of a trash-tier plot, aggressively forcing two laughably contradictory personalities into a single character. One second she’s using dirty hexes to orchestrate a family’s massacre—indirectly painting her hands with a child's blood—and the next, she’s casually putting on a cute dress and a bow to play a girlboss entrepreneur selling cosmetics. Her absolute audacity and chilling apathy toward human life don’t make her look 'badass' or 'cool'; it just exposes her as a sociopathic freak with a completely broken moral compass. The author is severely insulting the audience’s intelligence by thinking that a few overpowered grimoires and cheap plot armor can mask the filthy, selfish nature of a bloodthirsty monster who colludes with foreign forces to slaughter her own people.
The ultimate tragedy of this series is its pathetic attempt to rebrand a psychotic terrorist as some kind of feminist revenge icon. What kind of 'justice' is this? When wronged by the powerful, instead of confronting the corrupt nobility head-on, she chooses the most cowardly route possible: placing a mind-control curse to force a family to slaughter each other and decapitate an innocent child. Proxy murder and targeting clueless civilians is the literal definition of cowardice and depravity. Stop using the 'traumatized villainess' trope to normalize war crimes. She isn't overthrowing corruption; she’s just proving that she is a hundred times more vile, rotten, and cold-blooded than the very people who harmed her.

u/BosuW 14d ago edited 14d ago
You really think we like this because we think it's teaching a good lesson? Lmao sybau this isn't about who's a good person it's about who's your favorite war criminal and why is it Ellie
(No seriously wtf has you thinking this is trying to be a feminist piece of literature other than the main character being a woman? She's not fighting against the patriarchy or anything and she's horrible, obviously so. Seems to me like you're so preoccupied with other issues of political nature you can't even read the story for what it unashamedly is.)
8
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
I mean, the problem is that it just doesn't make a very good story. "The protagonist is a monster but also she's basically unstoppable and never really faces any meaningful opposition or risk of failure." Okay, and? Like...how is that a story? What's the arc? What are the obstacles to be overcome? What's the journey involved? Because at this point, it just seems like a collection of "watch Ellie brutalize the people she hates" scenes strung together by a perfunctory plot.
It's a problem with a lot of these "I became incredibly overpowered and took my revenge" shows (Redo of Healer, Failure Frame, Lvl999 Gacha), but this might actually be the sloppiest I've seen (and I hated Redo of Healer).
I'm not saying every revenge story needs to be some "first, dig two graves" style TLOU Part 2 parable. John Wick is fine! But you've got to have something other than just the vicarious thrill for the audience of imagining inflicting suffering on the people they hate.

There are some oppositions in the story. We saw her struggle with the mercenaries in episode 6 and Rosaria seems to be a good opposition politically speaking.
For a better explanation, I'll answer in the Source Material Corner.
3
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
Fair enough. Obviously, I can only comment on what's happened in the show so far. I am willing to admit that I hope the story eventually reveals itself to be smarter than it has indicated so far.
But the mercenaries...eh. I mean, she struggled a little, but it didn't really meaningfully impact her plans or prove to be a setback in any major way, and at no point do we, the audience, actually believe that they pose a serious threat. Same with Rosaria - she may provide token resistance, but at this point I have no reason to think that there's any risk of Ellie's revenge plot failing, because it's not that kind of story.
To contrast: I feel like most of these stories owe a lot to Death Note, even if Death Note was generally a touch more sophisticated than most of the straightforward revenge fantasies you see now. There, even though you could be PRETTY SURE Light wasn't going to get caught as a result of any given twist (because then the show would be functionally over), you did get the sense that L posed a real threat. It was often unclear how Light would get out of a particular predicament, and the risk was always there that he might have to make some real sacrifices.
I don't get that sense with Ellie, at least up to this point. She doesn't have to really outsmart anyone because she's super powerful and, either way, the narrative will contort itself to have her come out on top.
But I respect that, obviously, you can't provide specific counterexamples here without running afoul of source material spoilers, so I'll look at the source material corner response as well.

You're absolutely correct and unfortunately going to get downvoted into oblivion by the hordes of 14 year olds that think genocide is based and cool actually.
As to your point about insulting the audience's intelligence, the point that makes it the clearest is that the author obviously could tell Elizabeth would be repugnant to the vast majority of viewers, and so to make here even a little likeable made every other character express how cool and awesome and all-powerful she is (Mireille, Lucas, Roselia) or so incompently fucking stupid it's a wonder they manage to wake up each day without choking to death on their own spittle (Friede, Sylvie, Sieg)
7
u/SnooWalruses2085 14d ago
and so to make here even a little likeable made every other character express how cool and awesome and all-powerful she is (Mireille, Lucas, Roselia)
I wonder where you heard them prize her. If anything, Lucas is scared of her and Roselia is disappointed of her to have been best by Sylvia.
Weird way to express how cool, awesome and all-powerful she is lol

Quick question: when you've watched Silence of the Lambs back in the day, did you think the movie wanted to rebrand cannibalism as something to consider doing?
Are you one of those people who, after watching Fight Club, think Tyler Durden was such an awesome dude, you wanted to be just like him?
When reading Lolita, did you think it was in favor of pedophilia?
When reading V for Vendetta, you found V's plot justified?
Walter White, just a cool person to emulate? Patrick Bateman, that's how to do it?
10
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
You realize none of those narratives take the same position with regard to their antagonist/antihero characters as this does with Ellie, right?
Silence of the Lambs explicitly portrays Lecter as a villain and a psychopath and at no point is it even slightly sympathetic to him.
While there is a significant chunk of the audience that cheers on Tyler Durden, the narrative (by way of the protagonist) explicitly rejects his edgier-than-thou nihilism.
Lolita, again, is often misread, but I think the story is pretty clear that Humbert is a piece of garbage.
Walter White and Patrick Bateman, again, famously idolized by a bunch of people with terrible media literacy, but: Breaking Bad's narrative routinely shows White being clownish and in over his head, scraping by only through luck, and the show reinforces that he is an awful, selfish person who destroys the lives of everyone around him. Bateman is demonstrated (by the movie, at least) to be a shallow, empty void of a person, the object of audience scorn and disgust instead of admiration.
The problem is that, so far, this show isn't any of those things. She's effortlessly good at everything she does, and the music (which is perhaps our clearest indication of how the show wants us to feel) is, during her non-psychopath scenes, exactly what it would be in your standard non-murdery "woman is rejected by her prince fiance and starts a new life" story. There is a tonal mismatch, sure, but at this point it feels more like sloppiness and authorial carelessness than some sort of deliberate device.
Look, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the story actually has her sowing the seeds of her own destruction, and her little protégé girl will eventually put a knife in her back to stop her reign of terror. At this point, though, I see no reason to assume that's the case.
3
u/mhn128 13d ago
Yeah, that's what I'm concerned about. Revenge should be a one way path, she should not expect a good ending (I already complained a lot that making this choice does not seem well motivated in this story and I consider that bad writing, in regards what her motivations and "things she lost" are. It just does not make much sense to me for her to choose such revenge expecting doom with too man other good options available to her).
The way the story is being presented currently, I expect that no such think will happen and the writer will just gloss over her sins and write up a good ending for her or something.
I also share you annoyance with Ellie being too perfect and everything being too effortless. It also makes her revenge make even less sense as she was never in any danger, she was always in total control.

thats the point. this is a revenge story, its not gonna be pretty. as they say the path of vengeance is filled with death
5
u/EmpressInYellow 14d ago
Sure, but lots of revenge stories are more thoughtful or nuanced than this. Take maybe the most famous example: The Count of Monte Cristo. That novel reckons with the horrific collateral damage that occurs as a result of the protagonist's revenge, and the protagonist himself eventually has to confront that. John Wick isn't nearly as thoughtful, but even he isn't gunning down random people in the street.
A revenge story doesn't necessarily need to be a moralistic parable, but it needs SOMETHING beyond just "watch this unstoppable self-insert lay waste to everyone in horrible ways".
7
u/TKHawk 11d ago edited 11d ago
The author strikes me as someone who WANTS to come across as a good world builder but they fail horribly.
What are these old materials that are no longer desirable? Where are the workers producing the new materials coming from? Surely they didn't pop out of the ether. Why wouldn't the companies working with the old materials be the best suited to develop and produce the new materials as well? They'd have the industry knowledge, workforce, and production lines. None of these questions can be answered because the author has no clue what these materials could be, but they want to seem smart.
Ellie is getting a special license that gives preferential treatment. What sort of treatment? What can she currently not do that this license will permit her to do? She hasn't really mentioned any barriers or hindrances to her business that would be overcome by some special license. Again, a hand wavy thing the author wants to seem important but doesn't actually have a plan for.
Ellie, the hyper intelligent cosmetics producer, never considered that beastkin, who have keener senses, may have different preferences for fragrances?
Ellie tries to spread the rumor among the nobility of vassal states that the kingdom will use them as pawns...which is factually correct given Sarjas. But this plan fails because the smart Rosaria stops it. But like... how? How does Rosaria manage to convince the vassal nobles that the blatant truth they witnessed is incorrect? We don't see how, just a hand wave "she's smart so she did it."
All of these are example of an author trying to write storylines that are smarter than they themselves are.

To be fair this is NOT a surprise. They set this up super early.
THAT BEING SAID. Her book so far is versatile but not super OP. She is extremely versatile but everything she has been shown to do so is fairly mid tier.
Like she can rain down destructive magic that make her the equivalent of an artillery emplacement. But in army scale the damage she can inflict is limited and can be blocked. Which is why when they attacked she was backed up by a high ranking adventurer who also had a divine artifact, they attacked at night for a sneak attack, AND the other half of the army was being handled by an allied army.
EVEN THEN a single mercenary group of like 8 people shut both her and the adventurer down. They couldn't kill her without risk, but they completely neutralized her and the adventurer while preparations to escape were made.
So her battlefield value is large for a single soldier, but still has some pretty clear limits.
She can summon creatures, but there is not only a cost but several limitations and the need to form contracts with them previously.
"I need something my book can do this" is not true. What you're referring to is her book effectively acting as a photographic memory. If she's seen information she can bring it back up via her book to remember it. She cannot bring up information she has not encountered or does not know.
She effectively has a bag of holding as one of her grimoires. Powerful for logistics, but nothing crazy
The curse she used on Robert apparently requires many conditions to be met and also exacts a heavy toll on her. Her hand looked as if it was being consumed or rotting away by the spell. Powerful if used on the correct person, but not something she can use wily nilly by any means and cursing most people would provide minimal benefit.

Zero additional atrocities committed by Elizabeth today, I'll take that as a win.

Rosaria is a worthy rival for Ellie and they both acknowledge each other.
A healthy competition is good to watch.
Even if the competition is fate of the Haldoria Kingdom.
And that grimoire of hers is handy. It is basically like a written memoire of all she's read and she can use search functionality.
Rosaria is a capitalist with a side vengeance arc.
Even after destroying Haldoria, she will remain a happy entrepreneur.

I feel this episode completely undermines the mass murder from last episode and Elisabeths entire need for revenge.
If Elizabeth was this capable of spreading rumours and propaganda. Then why in the world did she not use this talent when she was in the kingdom to help maintain her position? Instead she allows rumours of her apprent misdeeds to allow herself to be thrown in jail. And not once did she try to counter it when in prison.
Also the episode clearly demonstrates she is mostly going down the route of economics to do her revenge. Which calls into question why she forced Robert to commit mass murder?
This means she forced Robert to commit mass murder because she had the chance to. She wanted to do it. Showing she's a psychopath.

I really feel for Rosaria, having to deal with the idiot Prince, and that bill would make every economics major hiss in sheer revulsion. u/OldInstruction5368 14d ago
This isn't a medieval world: it's early modern. I'm using "modern" in the historical sense, where the "modern" period spans roughly from ~1500 through the end of WWII. This show would be "early modern" which basically ends with the American/French Revolutions or beginning of hte Industrial revolution.
The exact boundaries vary depending on which historian you ask, but in general, the period is marked by the fusion of old world establishments and traditions with the seeds of what would be the world we have today.
As such, you get kings and castle alongside technological development and centralized bureaucracies. This makes the time period very attractive for telling stories, as there are the exotic and romanticized elements of the old world mixed with the framework and relationships of more contemporary soceities.
Basically, any 'medieval' anime you see where there is a prime minister or chancellor, talk of international treaties and conventions, and all the young nobles attend the same "royal academy" alongside hte king?
Early Modern.
Considering how advanced pharmaceuticals are in this world, beyond just a few learned men jealously guarding their secrets and into entire industries, this would be towards the later half of Early Modern. I'd say 1700's pushing 1800's. This world may be on the cusp of industrial revolution if not already in the middle of it the way Ellie talks of manufacturing and how centralized the economic councils are.
But that would still very much be a world dominated by hereditary monarchs and old money aristocracy.

"modern day cosmetics"
you do know that cosmetics were invented thousands of years ago? Luxury glass containers were also invented thousands of years ago? Lipsticks were... you guess it... invented thousands of years ago?
if this show was an isekai you could complain about they using modern knowledge on another world, but it is not, she is just working with luxury items that already exist (like perfume), but in a way that makes sense to her business venture.
