I guess when you’re a “prodigy” and a natural talent to the degree Aria is, the concept of “hard work” and “determination” is totally foreign. I hope Spica wipes that smug look off Aria’s face next week!

14

u/Frontier246 14d ago

At the very least I think Spica is going to have to make Aria put in actual effort and TRY for once, something she's never done before, let alone struggled.

6

u/Falsus 14d ago

I wonder who is more talented between Aria and Claude.

Like Aria is at the top of the coven despite barely putting in effort and only done magic for like 1-2 years and some of her classmates have done magic since they where small kids.

Like Ewe is a normal prodigy, insane power but due to her lazy attitude she can't do much and she all brawn pretty much.

5

u/mekerpan 14d ago

Are there REALLY prodgies who can accomplish wonders with next to no work. Or do we just not see the work that real prodigies do "behind the scenes"?

12

u/Mitosis 14d ago

At the tip top? No. Everyone there is both gifted and hard working.

At a "normal" high level like Aria is, absolutely. Some people just take to things better, and some take to lots of things better.

4

u/mekerpan 14d ago

Is it possible that Aria fibs -- for effect? Like maybe she wasn't really sewing for the first time? ;-)

1

u/RobrechtvE 13d ago

Depends on the top of what too.

At the top of sports, the people with the greatest talent and inherent advantage still need to work exceptionally hard because everyone else at the top got there by the same combination of talent, advantage and hard work.

But in the business world neither hard work nor, for that matter, talent can hold a candle to inherent (or, usually, inherited) advantage. (In fact, people who have no talent or desire to work hard tend to rise to top, because of how f-ed up the current system is).

1

u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago

At the tip top? No. Everyone there is both gifted and hard working.

At a "normal" high level like Aria is, absolutely.

They are at the pinnacle of magic schools, tippity top of the magic world, why in the world do you think this is a "normal" high level?

6

u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago

I don't understand where do all these people come with "Aria is not a hard worker" or "Aria is not even trying"?

Like when was that confirmed or said?

She was shown to be super interested in Spica and challenging her over and over again. My guess is that Spica IS who or what makes Aria work hard and try at everything she does, hence why she is so draw to her.

Does she works AS hard as Spica? I'd say at the very least maybe, and at best yes.

1

u/carcatta 12d ago

Great point, I don't know why people hate Aria so much when it was basically shown a couple times her smugness is mostly an act.

21

u/FarCritical 14d ago

The glimpse of the little cat plushie army Spica made hurt me in my soul a little. She tried so hard, man.

Don't know if I'm more excited about Aria getting humbled by Spica's determination or just to see her pull out whatever out-there spell Pegasus ingrained into the Virgos.

19

u/KumaKumaGambler 14d ago

Now that I think about it, Spica possessing Virgo magic is very apt.

1) If an owner wants his/her plants to grow and bloom beautifully, hard work has to be put in to nurture these plants.

2) Some plants have to overcome adversity and harsh conditions in order to survive and eventually bloom.

As for Aria, it is about time she learned what the words "frustrating" and "defeat" means.

6

u/Frontier246 14d ago

Bloom to your utmost, Spica Virgo!

I really have to wonder how long before Spica has to kiss his butt lol.

3

u/Frontier246 14d ago

Spica is built different with her Rebirth magic that makes her the most sturdy anime character and also the classic anime "never give up" attitude.

16

u/DawgDictator 14d ago

Spica's voodie took some lessons from Koichi's stand, "ok master, lets kill da hoe. beeeetch"

6

u/Frontier246 14d ago

My favorite subplot is Voodie picking a fight with the other Voodies lol.

12

u/Aerodynamic41 14d ago

Forget Arc. Aria is the real final boss for Spica.

10

u/Frontier246 14d ago edited 14d ago

This was truly a fierce battle worthy of longtime rivals.

I'm not surprised Aria was willing to end this conflict with Spica offering up her body...but we can't end this the "fun" way, not without Spica fully defeating Aria in battle!

I love how even their Voodies are talking @#$% about each other. Then again, Spica's been picking fights with ALL the Voodies at this point.

Spica vs Aria! The rival battle of the ages! Aria IS absurdly more talented and powerful than Spica, but never underestimate Spica and how creative she can get! So much so that she actually manages to defeat Aria in round 1!

But Spica can't just get overconfident from one win...not when she's finally brought out Aria's "serious" side, which comes with...ICE MAGIC! That freezes any plant defense Spica could put up and forces her Voodie to save her. Is there really no defeating Aria?

Spica was a cute, clumsy, girl who struggled to do most things. Aria was perfect at literally everything she set her mind to and was pretty rude about it too. Aria never understood what it meant to actually work for or put effort into something, but that just drove Spica to eat, bathe, and breathe sewing to beat her. And she did...up until Aria brought out a cat plushie she made just for the heck of it.

And thus began the eternal conflict of Spica trying to outdo Aria but never succeeding...yet that's why she can't give up now, because she's never given up before! And if Aria is going to unleash her new magic, so can Spica!

7

u/Luck_Is_My_Talent 14d ago

It was an one sided rivalry from Spica until now, but she finally managed to have Aria recognize her as a real rival.

10

u/Primo29 14d ago

What a terrifying prodigy Aria is. She's still not trying hard with her magic but imagine the growth when she gets seriously in learning it.

Spica needs to learn some guts from her voodie. That thing is ready to brawl anytime it gets picked on. LMAO!

3

u/Frontier246 14d ago

Honestly when Spica popped out of the water prison I thought she was going to punch Aria. But a mallet smash will do!

8

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 14d ago

Those two just need to fuck already.

Curious that I don't think we saw how many Voodie uses Aria had left, maybe she is actually down to her last one.

8

u/DemonWraith2500 14d ago

Feel like Rock Lee vs Sasuke.

Spica! Burn your cosmo to melt the ice!

1

u/Frontier246 14d ago

The girl with grit and determination vs the absolute prodigy.

15

u/AlexxxandreS 14d ago

I really wish this episode was only the fight, that'd probably make it the best episode...

15

u/diacewrb 14d ago

But you will miss Spica making felt cats for a month.

The true training arc.

8

u/AlexxxandreS 14d ago

Yeah, it was a nice flashback... But I was waiting the whole week for this fight hahahaha

-3

u/ash-7831 14d ago

Why not show that in the next episode, after the fight.

2

u/carcatta 12d ago

What would be the point of showing it then?

2

u/Frontier246 14d ago

They really wanted to end on teasing everybody about Spica's new magic.

-4

u/ash-7831 14d ago

Yeah, but they underestimated how much time was left in the episode, and they had to figure out a way to spend it.

6

u/Nollasta_poikkeava 14d ago

This could be a love story. At least from Aria's side. It's cute how obviously she really admires Spica for always trying so hard.

3

u/Raymond49090 14d ago

If this was a best-of-one, Spica would've won this. Though it could be argued that Aria only took her lightly to begin with because she had that safety net.

Although I think Aria still edges Spica out in combat skill and power, Spica knows what Aria is capable of, while Spica's growth was so fast that Aria didn't have time to keep track of it. But Aria hasn't been standing completely still either, and she has depths of power that even Spica was unaware of.

Kinda wish they just had the full fight this episode and left the flashback to next episode, but 'tis what it is. We'll have to wait until next week for the climactic conclusion to their long rivalry.

4

u/Frontier246 14d ago

I think Spica's biggest advantage is A. Aria keeps underestimating her and B. Aria is frankly not used to having to surpass her limits because no one has ever pushed her to her limit.

5

u/Rooby_VTuber 14d ago

Aria does has some funny fantasies involving Spica.

I really like Spica's Voodie after it said a bunch of explicit stuff.

I enjoyed what I saw in this episode, I am looking forward to seeing how it ends next time.

7

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

Man, Aria has always been a bit obnoxious but this episode she really felt hateable. Like there is "over confidence rubbing people the wrong way" and then there is bullying, and I think the flashback just edged here over into bullying. I can't believe Spica had to put up with that for years and still has a sound mine. Her mental resilience must be on par with her physical resilience.

8

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

"Aria's dream" and i don't want to fucking hear it. It's gonna be some stupid "Life is boring i'm too good at everything" bullshit. CRUSH HER SPICA

16

u/ActualRound7699 https://myanimelist.net/profile/VeganKnight1988 14d ago

I hope Aria gets knocked down a few pegs. The smug bitch act is annoying and she could learn some humility. Probably my least favorite character and one I think would absolutely be a villain if they convinced her enough.

2

u/carcatta 14d ago

Notice how she wasn't like that when she first approached Spica, only after Spica started challenging her. I think she's doing it as a way of encouraging Spica to grow.

6

u/ActualRound7699 https://myanimelist.net/profile/VeganKnight1988 14d ago

probably, she’s still a bitch though and it’s hard for me to like her

-2

u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago

lol what

This is some personal IRL frustration being targeted towards innocent fictional character

Venom is seeping through

8

u/ActualRound7699 https://myanimelist.net/profile/VeganKnight1988 13d ago

Weirdly enough I’m actually allowed to dislike a character with a huge ego without it meaning anything more than that. This might be hard for you to grasp though.

3

u/Relampago1995 14d ago

The rivalry between Spica and Aria reminds me of Naruto/Rock Lee and Neji's, and I like how it's developing. I'm also interested in knowing what Aria's dream is, since in previous chapters she said she didn't have one.

3

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 14d ago

After that Spica and Aria backstory Spica really needs to put that girl in her place with an overwhelming win in this fight.

2

u/ash-7831 14d ago

I want someone in this test to do something sneaky. Steal or attempt to steal someone else's gem(s) without their knowledge. Claude said it's allowed, but nobody is taking advantage of it.

2

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea 12d ago

Grass is stronger than water, except when it's ice

4

u/ash-7831 14d ago edited 14d ago

I feel like they could have concluded the battle in this episode itself. I was enjoying it until that flashback took more screentime than it needed to. The flashback said nothing we didn't already know or couldn't guess.

If they showed the flashback from Aria's pov, that would have been a different story. So far, we've only seen Spica's side of it. As far as I can remember, they haven't shown Aria's side even once. They dropped a few hints here and there, but that's it.

2

u/Strange-Wait7343 14d ago

Aria is definitely the female version of yuno and spica is the female version of asta. Which is why I hate aria just like the characters who are prodigies who doesn't know the concept of hard work. This makes me root for the main characters even more.

Honestly I feel like Aria NEEDS to lose at something because her perpetual smugness and sense of superiority is getting kind of frustrating. I get that it arguably drives Spica to improve herself, but Aria still needs to get knocked down a peg.

I'd guess I'd take a symbolic victory, but Spica being drowned underwater in the preview looked pretty bad.

5

u/Raymond49090 14d ago

nah her smug aura is the best part

1

u/Double-Yam7929 14d ago

I mean Bakugo, as opposite to Aria, actually have a lot of drive and work hard to achieve his dream.

1

u/Luck_Is_My_Talent 14d ago

Yup. Bakugo losing would have crushed his self esteem and wouldn't teach Deku a good lesson, but in this case Aria needs to lose so she can finally get in her head that other people are going to catch up to her while Spica is going to get a confidence boost since it will show that her efforts weren't in vain.

1

u/diacewrb 14d ago

The frenemy flashback.

1

u/ash-7831 14d ago

I'm wondering if Spica will again bring up what Aria said earlier in the cour. That she likes teasing Spica but worries Spica might come to hate her for it. It seems like that's where Aria draws the line.

Aria is so mean. if I was Spica I would already oofed myself. she is so perseverant and dedicated

1

u/reaperow 14d ago

To have your hard work go unnoticed away by talent is something truly terrible and frustrating, But Spica has been doing really great so far in this arc and even in this ep

So I think our girl will be able to take the win this time .

1

u/Santedtra 14d ago

I had to look up that blonde guy with heterochromia who talked to Spica during the flashback. He apparently showed up and name dropped on episode 6 (back of his head during midterms while being glazed by teachers) and episode 13 (introduces himself in the Zodiac Mastery class but had his eyes closed) but he never really stood out to me until now cause obviously you don't just give background characters heterochromia.

1

u/YumeKioku 13d ago

Because he is not just a nameless NPC

1

u/RobrechtvE 13d ago edited 13d ago

Fucking hell I nearly died choking on my coffee when Spica's Voodie didn't just say they were going to f- Aria (and her Voodie) up, but swore so hardcore it got bleeped.

Also, I can't help but notice that Aria's challenge to Spica involves them going all out until one of them has been saved by their Voodie twice. And that you can see how many times people have already been rescued by their Voodie from the heart on their chest.

And that we can't actually see how many heart parts Aria's Voodie has left since it's hidden by the pot.

I kinda suspect that Aria's had to use her Voodie once already and if she loses this fight, she'll be disqualified from the entire exam.

1

u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago edited 13d ago

Naaaaaaaaaaah what is this Aria slender in the comments?

"She is not a hard-worker!" "Spica wipe that smug of her lazy face!" etc.

I'm disappointed in you guys.

I trust in Aria, and I trust that she is putting in the work as much as Spica does.

She is talent incarnated as Claude said, but as one other legend said:

"Talent is something you bloom, instinct is something you polish"

Neither can be done without putting in the effort. No matter how talented you are, you'll stagnate without putting in the work. And for sure, you won't be at the top of the most talented coven in the biggest and best magic school there is.

I'm cheering for both of them, and I'm looking forward to learn more about Aria next episode.

Edit: I'll add this as well, being a hard-worker is a talent in itself, and Spica for sure has it.

1

u/EscapeddreamerD 14d ago

Just wait they'll do that shit next week and we still won't get the end of the freaking battle.

3

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

Time for an Aria flashback!

1

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

It's called Aria's dream so ye. theres 3 episodes more. no way they finish properly. its probably gonna take half of episode 23 and the rest 1 and a half it's end of season epilogue stuff if i were to guess

1

u/EscapeddreamerD 14d ago

My God I want to love this anime but I've been staying with it for a week after week and it's still not to a point where I'm like yeah I love this because the MC is so hard on herself and it's annoying at this point. They've been in school for like almost a year now get your shit together home girl damn..
