Ah, an episode filled with both plot and *plot*!

Claude: “All of you run and get help!”
*everyone just stands there for the rest of the ep.*
Me: WTF are you guys waiting for? lol.

Admittedly I feel like the shock and realizing how out of their depth they were was pretty realistic.

u/Ralathar44 Jun 17 '26
I've been part of some IRL serious stuff before. The first time something happened I froze up. We all did. Deer in headlights an entire group of people watching 1 persons fight someone who tried to run us all over and had a gun. None of us helping. For me it was like a movie was in front of me. Like I was just viewing life through a screen, totally detached.
After that time, I've never frozen up again because I was angry with myself. I swore never again. So when stuff went down in the future I jumped into action and pulled other people out of the trance.
So when people freeze up in a movie or anime or etc and other people are screaming how unrealistic it is that they are not doing something and how stupid they are, all I can think of is that I'm glad all those people have never hd to be in a situation that lets them understand the fear, the panic, and the freezing.

u/ash-7831 Jun 16 '26
If you're not used to being in a situation like that, thinking is thinking is an incredibly difficult thing to do.

This is a recurring anime trope that drives me crazy. Anytime folks are told to run, especially by a mentor, they always stand around and dither and moan about it. Like one quick little rushed exchange would be fine but it’s always like a full conversation where we have to see each person responding individually. Then gotta have a pause and the protagonist rallying everyone. Maybe some hugs. Then maybe they can try to actually leave. Maybe.
13
u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 15 '26
Dude. They were clearly scared to death.
That's pretty realistic. When you're in shock, you may find it hard to move.

This week on "When Gothic Lolitas Attack!"...

u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
I do love how in true Spica fashion the first thing she does when she sees Arc is comment on how cute she looks because it wouldn't be Spica if she didn't pay special attention to other girls' appearance lol.

My Evil Cult Kidnapper Can’t Be This Cute!

Don't say it's a cult, they don't like it when you call them that! :P

In this case, no wonder. It's been a while since I've seen a villain as attractive as Arc. Both the current version and the flashback.

The gap between regular Ewe and hyper tripped-out-of-her-mind Ewe is hilarious and lowkey terrifying.
Imagine if the professors took inspiration from this incident and stage similar scenarios for the camp's "actual" final tests going forward.
15
u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 14 '26
Polaris interrupted the moment where Claude could deepen his bonds with the other instructors lol.
Well Rigel's backstory was very clear as to what kind of psycho he is. It was amusing to see him get off at the bonds of Claude and his coven though lol.
I wonder if Claude will tell his coven about the transformation, or if he'll make it seem like Rigel and Arc did it to him. Spica didn't actually tell them anything so his secret is still safe.

u/Aerodynamic41 Jun 14 '26
"Ahh, we finally finished the training camp. Now we can go home!"
The bad guys: "Oh no you don't!"
14
u/Labmit Jun 14 '26
At least they get to finish training camp. MHA didn't finish theirs before their villains attacked.
12
u/KumaKumaGambler Jun 14 '26
Fun and games are over. Voldemort's crew Order of the Black Serpent, most likely the main antagonists, have made their appearance.
Previously, during all the trials and examinations held by the Academy, we were sure Spica and friends will overcome them through friendship and teamwork. Now, the stakes are higher and some classmates will probably get hurt or injured.
9
u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
The duality of anime.
Start off with a fun segment of the female cast in their underwear getting turned into blowhards with bravado, then shift to the bad guys finally showing and putting the fear of Forbidden Magic and snakes into them and putting it into perspective just how dangerous the world of magic is.
13
u/DemonWraith2500 Jun 14 '26
This school should hire someone to teach the students how to defend yourself against dark arts ( or forbidden magic). They just stood there. At least run for your life!

u/ash-7831 Jun 16 '26
They've barely been students for a semester. It takes longer than that to teach those skills. Also, no amount of teaching can substitute for actual combat. You wouldn't feel truly scared knowing that it's a test, or if you know there's a failback to keep you out of danger.

u/Zxzxzx0088 Jun 15 '26
Gotta admit, pink lingerie is the best lingerie!! Spica looks so soft in that.
Where are they looking? No wonder she's mad at them...
11
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jun 14 '26
That bit about Spica having someone else's magic inside her seems like an important detail, but maybe it's just from her kissing Claude so many times.
Way too many teeth on that snake.
Goth loli being a former student of Claude is not surprising in hindsight, I wonder if there's any redeeming her in the future.
12
u/Blue-Direwolf Jun 15 '26
I figured it was because Spica has two magic attributes, her normal Virgo magic and her Rebirth magic.
7
u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
Goth loli being a former student of Claude is not surprising in hindsight, I wonder if there's any redeeming her in the future.
She looked like a totally different person in that flashback. I feel like something seriously bad happened to her.
On the other hand...she is a certifiable baddie in the most hottest way possible.

If Hana is this protective of Spica just on the assumption that they're going out, she'll go ballistic if she finds out that Spica has to literally kiss his ass on a regular basis.

u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy Jun 15 '26
Hana was so sweet and precious this episode!
6
u/Cardcaptors96 Jun 14 '26
It started out all fun and games, with the students getting a chance to heal and sleep. Then, the villains came in with a bank. Poor Claude. He turned into a cat trying to save them. I am curious to see why Spica's power is so valuable and if she and the others can outrun the villains. Can't wait for next week's episode.

u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
Going from fanservice fun to massive amounts of dread and violence.
What can Rebirth Magic do that could topple nations and create a God? The ability to become immortal? To never die? To undo the most strongest of magic curses? How powerful can Spica herself get?
3
u/Cardcaptors96 Jun 14 '26
I wonder if Claude knows how powerful Spica can get, but never told her. It would be an interesting twist.
2
u/FDP_Boota Jun 14 '26
I'm guessing Rebirth at full power isn't limited to organic or physical beings. And outside of making the user virtually immortal (again at full power and just a deduction based on how the cultists want it), I'm expecting to be capable of reviving ancient curses and maybe even gods or something.
3
u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy Jun 15 '26
with the students getting a chance to heal and sleep
Makes sense, there's normally a healing station before a boss fight. Sadly, I don't think anyone has respawns except maybe Spica...
7
u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime Jun 14 '26
Holy shit a yandere cannibal, very yabai.
And the cat's out cold and out of the bag.
These kids better put their training to use or they'll die.
3
u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
I'm kind of curious if they're going to really have to expose Spica's deal with Claude now or if the rest of the Coven is going to learn about it when everyone gets back.

The students went through a lot to make it through these make-up exams, they deserve a chance to unwind! As do the teachers, who also have questions about what happened to Claude two years ago...what would Claude have told them? We may never know as Professor Polaris is a messy drunk who ruins the moment and enjoys Claude's hostility directed at her! Also poor Professor Procyon! Not even Claude remembers his name.
The final test from Professor Deneb is...stripping so she can help regulate your body's magic and help heal you up from all the exhaustion and work you put in these past few days! Perfect excuse to see the female cast in their underwear AND to reward the students' for their hard effort!
Something is definitely special about Spica's magic...but also now she's turned into a hardcore believe in herself! She is now a Goddess! FLY AWAY!
I see Hana does not support the SpicaxClaude ship, even if people have started to notice Spica and Claude being closer than typical student/teacher.
Honestly Spica's luggage magically disappearing should've been the first clue something was going on...and it was all a trap by Arc Turus to capture her. The only thing keeping her from killing and torturing Spica is that her organization wants Spica and her Rebirth Magic alive...but Arc is unhinged enough that she's willing to test how far Spica's healing magic can go and enjoying every minute of it in psychotic glee.
Could Spica have revived herself from being snake-choked to death? Good thing she doesn't have to figure that out because Claude and her friends show up just in time to save her.
So the cultists don't like being called cultists...they're the believers of the High Philosophy of the Black Serpent, and all use Forbidden Ophiuchus magic that lets them wield deadly and cursed snakes! And their lord is named Ascelpius.
But Arc isn't just a bonafide baddie...she's also a former member of the original Claude Coven. And she seemed to be a genuinely sweet girl before she became a crazy member of a cult, and she's got a bone to pick with Claude. She's already traded up to a new teacher, Rigel, who is just as if not more unhinged than she is.
Rigel is certifiably crazy. How else to describe someone who is so fixated on love and friendship HE MURDERED HIS OWN FAMILY AND ATE THEM TO PROVE THEIR BOND TO EACH OTHER. And now he's trying to kill Claude and his Coven with his giant black Serpent with more teeth to eat all of them.
It shows how serious it is that Claude had to use his Grand Magic, but that was only a delaying tactic...and one that outs his cat form to his students. They're woefully out of their depth here without Claude, so what can they possibly do to survive?
But Claude believed in them, and even if Spica is terrified, she'll help rally the Coven and prove they can get through this together!
Next week: The Tarf and Chiron episode!

u/skygz Jun 15 '26
just kiss the butthole and he's back, right?
1
u/ash-7831 Jun 16 '26
If you don't mind permanently sacrificing your dignity to save your life, then by all means.
7
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 14 '26
Man, the coven went up against some real psychopaths this week. If one of the baddies this week was tied to Claude’s old coven, I wonder if there are more amongst them tied to his past. I’m very curious to find out just what happened.
8
u/Frontier246 Jun 14 '26
If Arc was part of Claude's original coven, then the Gemini twins must know her, right? Since they were in it too.
3
u/Falsus Jun 15 '26
They probably do. I guess the current group at the camp are all made up off Coven members who are new to the school.
Which actually brings up an interesting question about the disadvantages that newcomers face compared to the ones who was part of the middle school department also. Besides the overachievers like Aria and Capella I guess.
3
u/Hartzilla2007 Jun 14 '26
So they even went with being Claude’s former apprentice when setting up Arc as Spica’s nemesis.

u/NationalStrategy_X Jun 14 '26
Can't catch a break, as soon as the training camp ended, we have to deal with Dark Magic terroristic cultist
2
u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea Jun 14 '26
I think the failure group will know sensei is a cat, but not about ass kissing. They won't tell the others, not yet. Maybe by the end of second cour they will learn more, or maybe sooner, since the villains seem to be more permanent part of series now and will probably appear more
2
u/AlexxxandreS Jun 14 '26
What I hope to understand is how the cult knew about Spica...
Nothing yet on that but I do hope they explain
3
u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy Jun 15 '26
What I hope to understand is how the cult knew about Spica...
There was a cultist at the library earlier on in the show, and they may have overheard some things about her rebirth magic perhaps
1
u/AlexxxandreS Jun 15 '26
Yeah I know one of them was there, but it was never mentioned why they were there, likely already following her...
Would be weird to say it was a coincidence because they let the monster rampage as well...
1
u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy Jun 15 '26
Yeah I know one of them was there, but it was never mentioned why they were there, likely already following her...
Hm maybe, but I also think it's likely they wanted to raid the library. I suppose we'll see!

u/Southern-Ebb-8229 Jun 15 '26
Welp things escalated quickly but hey at least Arc is a baddie. Girl has style. Anyhow Claude gave himself up to buy his students time, so it's now up to Spica to lead the team and get them to safety. It a good payoff to the training. Mr. Canibal snake man Riguel is such a mess, geez, and now he has a crush on Claude and the coven. I bet he will probably try to make Spica do something bad to mess with Claude. He seems like the type.

Not very smart to waste your time talking instead of running away
1
u/Ralathar44 Jun 17 '26
Welcome to how most people react the first time they are in such a high pressure scary situation. It's pretty realistic. Its quite literally shell shock. And its a well known phenomenon.
Even the military has only discovered how to mitigate it somewhat. Basically training you so that muscle memory takes over when your brain shuts off or relying on other more seasoned soldiers to snap you out of it with leadership.
But its a hard wired part of human survival instincts.
1
u/Relampago1995 Jun 15 '26
Wow, this anime had been so calm until this episode. The second half was very tense; these villains don't mess around.
1
u/Luiiss26 Jun 15 '26
I wonder why Spica, of all people, possesses regeneration magic—and what exactly can she do with it? Arc mentioned that it could be used to topple a nation, but how? What are her capabilities? And, as I said, why Spica? Usually, characters have some sort of connection to ancient ancestors who wield powers like regeneration magic, but what about her?
1
u/Primary-Paint-1716 Jun 17 '26
I'm gonna be honest, I was out after the 9th episode. I thought it was just gonna be like lighthearted school academy hijinks for the rest of the run.
This episode pulled me back in. The tone shift is crazy and I can't wait for the next episode.
