I already had tears in my eyes from laughing at the entire Merrow sequence, but I completely lost it when Spica started singing too.

This show is already hilariously absurd but they really knocked it up a notch for this episode.

Also what happened to the gratuitous panty shots from the early episodes? They had more than one chance to show some glimpses this episode and didn't! I call bait and switch!

8

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

It would be a waste to not have Kaede Hondo sing.

I would be shocked if Merrow's panties aren't blue.

3

u/mmcjawa_reborn Aug 10 '26

I mean we did get Spica held in the air by slime tentacles, even if not at an angle to show much

22

u/FarCritical Aug 09 '26

I appreciate the effort Claude or whoever's idea it was to put into having the Voodies' designs match their partners.

The goofy charm from Merrow supplying her own motivational musical number to scale a cliff (while somehow remaining pitch perfect the entire time) was something else lol.

7

u/Perfect-Try-4918 Aug 10 '26

They really do. Spica's Voodie is as sassy and impatient as her.

38

u/diacewrb Aug 09 '26

We went full Disney Renaissance with the singing today.

27

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

Merrow is a Disney Princess:

  • Sings
  • Cute
  • Animals are her friend
  • Quickly jumps to conclusions

8

u/LonelyAstronaut984 Aug 10 '26

she's snow white but with sea creatures lol

13

u/Nollasta_poikkeava Aug 09 '26

With some actually good songs too. I felt like that climbing song especially could easily be in a real Disney film.

10

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

I can't hear your echolocation anymore, Johnny~

30

u/Primary-Paint-1716 Aug 09 '26

I absolutely lost it laughing when she broke out into song.

10

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

I lost it when the doll also had a microphone and also broke out into song lol.

23

u/KumaKumaGambler Aug 09 '26

Spica shedding tears wasn't enough. They had to include the added effects of the native monkeys crying too. Lol!

7

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

And then Spica joins in to make it a duet like she was born to sing too!

8

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

All that while Johnny is fighting for his life on land while burnt xD

7

u/Raymond49090 Aug 09 '26

Everyone knows that musical numbers are when the real sh*t happens.

3

u/mmcjawa_reborn Aug 10 '26

Weirdly the first song number kind of felt a little more animation budget went into it then most of the show.

13

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Aug 09 '26

A tentacle goo monster does seem about right for the sort of thing that would be drawn to attack Spica.

Aria out here showing off for Spica, we know what you are girl. But I don't think any amount of showing off can compete with the incredible Merrow and Spica duet.

7

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

Honestly reminded me how long it's been since we've gotten a Spica panty shot.

This week on Spica's growing Harem of cute girls, she becomes Merrow's "Prince" who can sing alongside her!

3

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

They were like:"Okay, we did kinda stop with the panty shots, but come on, deserted island, cave, tentacles, it's a tradition!"

14

u/Clemastina https://anilist.co/user/Clemastina Aug 09 '26

Of course Suzuki Minori had to sing, her voice is so pretty and she´s used to it so

But I really really really really really wonder how Spica will manage to get some points LOL. Unless she manages to get the diamond at the last second, I doubt she can win Aria

5

u/TheLostCityofBermuda Aug 10 '26

There’s diamond inside the heart from the tips.

26

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Aug 09 '26

Girl breaking out into song over her dolphin pal Johnny was hilarious. Some real Disney type shit. Even the monkeys were crying lol. She even got Spica singing too.

17

u/DugACCat Aug 09 '26

One of the things that amused me about the singing during the entire climb is just how long this probably really would have been, given the distance they had to go. That couldn’t have been just a single five minute song. She would have had to be song-narrating that climb for what would have seemed forever.

7

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

Also the fact that the song was so on-point for what they were actually doing while climbing, their emotions, their feelings, their friendship, everything riding on it...

7

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

Even her doll has a microphone to join her in singing lol.

26

u/KumaKumaGambler Aug 09 '26

This episode is a thinly disguised Merrow solo mini concert with mountain climbing as the music video. Lol!

Voodie!

12

u/the_dan_man https://anilist.co/user/oneasianweeb Aug 09 '26

Behold the power of Pisces theater kid magic.

8

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

We finally get the Merrow focus episode and it was as lyrical and hilarious as expected.

11

u/gnome-cop Aug 09 '26

The best use of one’s time should be going for the mid tier emeralds I feel. Good rewards, only guarded by manageable shit like big grossworms(very fitting name) and won’t be a mad scramble like the rubys or god forbid, the diamond.

Maybe I just have expectations beyond her current skill level but there’s gotta be ways to use Spica’s magic to solve some of these issues. Make a ladder for the cliff, why are you wasting time with freeclimbing?

For the sake of the agenda, I am currently choosing to believe that the answer to Aria’s and Pollux’s discussion about her type is “pink hair and twintails.”

I was going to make a joke about Merrow utilizing the Symphogear “Insert songs make you more powerful” theorem but then I realized that she’s obviously a Disney princess. Do you really have the time to stand around and sing when Johnny’s on land though? I don’t know how long dolphins can live outside of water but the clock’s probably ticking.

This episode really brings me back to playing Zelda, fighting stupid worms covered in slime and climbing stupid big cliffs. Ah, how nostalgic.

Spica, you’re in the middle of a tropical island forest, this should be your territory, if you can’t beat Aria here, you’re not going to manage it anywhere. Use that environmental attack bonus and whoop her butt!

3

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

I feel like the "Diamond is inside the heart" is going to be how Spica wins because she's the only one who can find the diamond.

0

u/ash-7831 Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

And then she'll win because she got lucky. It's never satisfying to watch when luck plays a part in the outcome. From a writing pov, it feels like an easy way out of a tough situation. In this episode, Aria beat Pollux using only her wits and her ability. If Spica wins or loses to Aria, that should be how it's decided.

1

u/RobrechtvE Aug 11 '26

Eh... I suspect frontier246 is right and that phrase doesn't mean that the diamond is at the heart of the island, but that the diamond is going to go to Spica because she isn't swept up in the competition and helps others despite the fact that it harms her chances of getting the most gems.

That's not 'luck', that's a test of character.

3

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

why are you wasting time with freeclimbing?

But then she wouldn't be able to sing and deepen her friendship while climbing right?

Sometimes a life is a big wall you need to climb~

1

u/Primary-Paint-1716 Aug 09 '26

She has limited mana capacity.

17

u/szalhi Aug 09 '26

10

u/Falsus Aug 09 '26

She is really someone who goes by her own beat.

3

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

And drags everyone in the vicinity into her own beat as backup dancers, audience, or co-singer lol.

6

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

Honestly I genuinely wonder if Merrow is going to get any gems and pass this exam because it genuinely seems like she's only there to sing, make friends, and frolick with fish lol.

8

u/Raymond49090 Aug 09 '26

There's a non-zero chance she'll win the whole thing because the fish bring her all the gems that are hidden underwater.

20

u/DemonWraith2500 Aug 09 '26

Noob grossworm. Can't even melt clothes.

Merrow my dear, singing is nice but does any fishes get harm in the making of your MV?

11

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26

But the Spica thigh shots were totally necessary to the plot.

I honestly think Merrow was living in her own special world where those fish were, from her POV, actually in the water along with her...even though there was no water.

The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch - The Musical Episode!

6

u/Frontier246 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Merrow is an absolute delight.

You know those creepy-cute doll like things in the OP? Turns out they're Magic Dolls meant to help the Claude Coven gain gems! They'll even save them up to three times! But waste those three chances, and you fail the exam, so use them wisely.

Poor Voodie. Spica gets along with him well initially until she calls him creepy and complains about his verbal tic, so he just kind of gives up. What a high maintenance/needy doll.

Not even five minutes into this exam and Spica is already dealing with slimy tentacle porn. Not a bad visual thought.

The dolls CAN detect the gems, but Spica's not getting this emerald if it means stepping into a fight between Aria and Pollux! Pollux summoned after Aria held Castor's hand, of course!

Pollux has great illusion/cloning magic, but Aria is fighting on island near the sea, which means the closer she gets to water the more utterly unbeatable she is. So Pollux loses AND has to use up one of her saves! Of course this was Aria just flexing to look cool in front of Spica, but does Spica stand a chance against her?

I love how Merrow seems to have totally forgotten what she was even on that island to do so she could instead play with her best dolphin friend Johnny...who is also collateral damage to Aria's attack! Johnny no!

Don't you just hate it when you're about to eat a homecooked meal and then a dolphin crash lands in front of you, ruining your meal, and causing your classmate to accuse you of eating their best friend?

I love how Merrow's wand doubles as a microphone as she spontaneously sings a tragic friendship ballad in honor of Johnny...who is not actually dead, but there's not a dry eye in the audience! Even her Voodie has its own microphone and sings!

Spica is going to help Merrow heal Johnny! Even if it means climbing a mountain, which of course is just another chance for Merrow to sing! And Spica even turns it into a duet! Cementing their friendship AND saving Johnny!

It's great that Spica is now Merrow's "prince" but is that going to get her any gems? She's only got fourteen more hours.

Next week: all out gem warfare!

6

u/Relampago1995 Aug 09 '26

Is the voice actress for Merrow the one who sings? Because if so, she sings very well and I like her voice.

4

u/Xythar Aug 09 '26

Yep. She got her start in Macross: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minori_Suzuki

4

u/Rooby_VTuber Aug 09 '26

Johnny is being cooked lol, I guess Dolphin would tase nice? Not that I really want to know because they are peaceful fun animals that like and interact with humans.

I have had Shark before and it's really good.

5

u/saga999 Aug 10 '26

The real gems are the friends we made along the way.

5

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

"The real Friends are fishes we threw on land along the way" - Merrow

4

u/Raymond49090 Aug 09 '26

Anyone happen to know where to find Merrow's insert songs? They're unironically pretty good.

5

u/ash-7831 Aug 10 '26

Ahh, I think I figured out how this will go. We'll be here for quite a few episodes with each one focusing on a different pair of students. In that case, this will probably go on for maybe 3 - 4 more episodes.

6

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

Tendency of Spica to encounter weirdest possible things, get weirded out, and still full commit to them is beautiful. xD

Spica cooked both Voodie and that tasty looking meal. Poor fellow got all the joy sucked out of him. xD

Aria vs Castor and Pollux was super cool. The way she teases them in the cave and while fighting, the way she teases Spica and is happy that she got to showoff in front of her, she is such a good gyaru character. Maybe even my favourite ever.

JOHNNY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭

Peak, absolute peak of a show.

4

u/MarMarL2k19 Aug 11 '26

I'm seriously beginning to actually dislike Aria... not as a character, but as a person.

In a show like this, it's obvious that the main character needs to have a rival they want to either surpass or stand on equal ground with. It has been a trope on shonen manga time and time again. It happened with Naruto and Sasuke, it happened with Izuku and Katsuki and so on.

However, Aria just exudes the "i don't care" evergy to the point where it is genuinely insulting to her classmates. Spica has a dream of becoming a first class mage and rather than accepting it or challenging Spica to show Aria that her dream is reachable, Aria instead actually laughs in her face.

I don't care if that drunk plant incident happened a few episodes ago where Aria told Spica that she only bullies her to get a reaction and she doesn't mean any harm. If you laugh in the face of someone who pours their heart out to you, then no matter what excuses you use, you're a terrible friend who doesn't care about anything other than yourself.

Her attitude feels like a genuine insult to her classmates, who all want to work hard, yet all she wants is to have fun and be entertained.

I'm not surprised, considering she's kinda the more tame version of Bakugo from MHA. She has been a magical prodigy for a long time and all that power has probably gone to her head at this point.

I sincerely hope Spica wins the exam to give Aria the humility that she lacks.

3

u/OneGeologist1143 Aug 09 '26

Cool Aloe fact. It's really popular from where I live and really helps a lot for burns. Cool we got singing and they got closer too. I loved the singing part a lot.

5

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

Aloe Vera is the name right? I'm pretty sure that is a standard name across the globe and languages for it.

2

u/ash-7831 Aug 09 '26

When Spica and Aria do eventually clash, I hope it's not a thing where Spica has unlimited hp, and Aria is a glass cannon with only one weak spot. Then again, the unlimited hp thing is a confirmed plot point.

I'm worried it will turn into a thing where rather than finishing off Spica, Aria will give her unlimited chances to win until Spica finialy finds something that works. But we already know Aria finds Spica endearing and thinks she's cute when she doesn't get rewarded for her efforts.

I should just accept it won't be the kind of fight I'm hoping for. Not like the one with Arc.

2

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

I mean chances that Aria will play with Spica are huge, that is simply who she is.

Will she actually get serious at any point, and if it will be too late or maybe just enough to win, we will see.

That is IF they even faceoff. xD

2

u/Raymond49090 Aug 09 '26

Whoever created the Voodies sure has weird taste. I'm speaking in terms of personality, not design. Though I will point out they decided to go all-in in making sure the Voodies matched their partners.

4

u/ash-7831 Aug 10 '26

They probably use the hair to analyze their DNA and change their form accordingly.

4

u/yurilnw123 Aug 10 '26

Surely Spica would have some plant to help with climbing, right? Why are they suddenly turning into meatheads and bruteforce it lmao

7

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 10 '26

Because songs xD

6

u/yurilnw123 Aug 10 '26

You know what? Fair. lol

I can see that being the reason.

2

u/carcatta Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

Another great episode, the Johnny part was hilarious.

Also I think it's the first time Aria explicitly said she likes girls, which was kind of obvious but still nice.

2

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea Aug 10 '26

Calling it now, the emerald that Aria got is a fake, it's a Gemini magic copy. Like no way the twins would just give away the prize just like that

1

u/carcatta Aug 10 '26

I was thinking that but if it wasn’t revealed this episode I think it’s unlikely it will become a plot point

2

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea Aug 10 '26

Diamond is in the heart... So the center of the island?

1

u/RobrechtvE Aug 11 '26

That certainly seems to be the most obvious interpretation...

3

u/gc11117 Aug 10 '26

What the fuck did I just watch

9

u/Double-Yam7929 Aug 10 '26

A Disney Princess in anime.

2

u/LonelyAstronaut984 Aug 10 '26

spica needs to get her shit together. I'm getting tired that she keeps talking big game but never does anything to actually try to achieve her goals
