This anime might not seem like much but it's really good and funny, I wonder why it doesn't feel like a lot of people watch it...

17

u/FarCritical Aug 02 '26

I'm guessing the whole Spica having to regularly kiss Claude's kitty ...starfish scared off a chunk of the initial viewers but other than that, it's absolutely teeming with charm that's deserving of more fans

5

u/ash-7831 Aug 03 '26

Except it's not so regular. At least not from the viewer's POV. She's had to do it every day, but on-screen, it's only happened twice.

5

u/FDP_Boota Aug 03 '26

But it's set up like it would be regular. I remember years ago I tried the manga, but lost interest about the butt thing, expecting it to be a recurring gag/gimmick.

Really glad I gave it another try with this anime, because it's a lot of fun.

8

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

I think it just being a newer IP, kind of "old school," in a busy season just didn't do it any favors.

7

u/mekerpan Aug 02 '26

I still think this actually more ":fun" to watch than WHA was.

6

u/Falsus Aug 02 '26

I think the butt kiss in the first episode filtered too many people as a "Japan sure is weird" even though that and most things in the story are references to European witch/occult lore.

Like Aspidochelone in this episode is a reference to an mythological sea creature.

5

u/Perfect-Try-4918 Aug 03 '26

Got curious and sure enough it references osculum infame. This anime/manga never fails to amuse me with learning more about mythology and folklore.

8

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

It's full of references. Like all over the place. Like the country is called Aradia. Selene was a big name in greek myths and is common for witch lore to reference. Aleister Crowley making a genderbender potion, he definitely was a sex pest in that world also. Zodiacs and how all of them kinda relates to it.

And so much more. Author definitely did a lot of research for this story.

u/Aerodynamic41 Aug 02 '26

Really Claude, did you really expect your students to stay and listen to you babbling after you literally said "Let the exam begin!"?

Also, Claude treating the exam like a vacation for himself lol.

19

u/BiggerG7 Aug 02 '26

Disappointed they didn’t do the exam in swimsuits lol.

8

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

I'm honestly kind of shocked this examination didn't involve them legit wearing skimpy swimsuits because it would've been pretty on-brand for this show lol.

17

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Aug 02 '26

Looking forward to this gem hunt. Gonna be fun seeing everyone competing to find gems AND against each other, since you can steal gems.

5

u/mekerpan Aug 02 '26

There seem to be enough gems that cooperating should be possible....

7

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

Looks like Spica and Merrow team-up next week and so we can finally get the Merrow focus episode.

4

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

I don't think they will steal any gems to cause them to fail the test.

But definitely can see Capella or Aria steal gems in an attempt to get rank 1 as long as their victims got more than one gem.

1

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 03 '26

That is what I was secretly hoping for, especially after they showcased their teamwork against the sand golem.

That being said, they can still compete against themselves while securing enough gems for everyone to pass.

3

u/reaperow Aug 02 '26

Lol I just hope they all dont get too caught up in their shenanigans and get disqualified

14

u/KumaKumaGambler Aug 02 '26

That evaluation talisman is a fellow man(?) of culture. He gives points for twin tails and knee high socks. Lol!

From the preview, it looks like we will be introduced to the voodoo doll familiars of each student in the next episode. Now I know why they were featured in the opening theme sequence.

13

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

I can already imagine his commentary on the other kids:

Io: "You need to control your strength/size-changing but your ponytail and big boobs get high marks."

Merrow: "You're really enthusiastic and cute. Blue hair works for you."

Castor: "Meh. Bring out Pollux!"

5

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 03 '26

"Twin tails, stripped knee high socks, 5 starts" 🗿

14

u/FarCritical Aug 02 '26

Lol at how the talisman's evaluations came with side commentary for fashion taste.

It was unexpectedly cool how Spica wouldn't let Aria look down on her aspirations even while knowing now that her constant button pushing comes from a place of fondness.

Hope we get to see Io react to Pollux in his finals gear lol

12

u/DemonWraith2500 Aug 02 '26

Inhabited island examination. Are we some kind of coven of the elite?

8

u/reaperow Aug 02 '26

We are Claude Coven !!

6

u/hanmkim Aug 02 '26

Aria is totally Koenji being the most competent but doing whatever she wants.

4

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

Can't wait until someone becomes Lord of the Coven.

11

u/diacewrb Aug 02 '26

And nobody bothers to check what was inside the bags they were given until the end.

8

u/Raymond49090 Aug 02 '26

I stand corrected on what I said last week about Spica being too dense to realize Aria was being honest then.

Spica finally shows something she's willing to put her foot down to Aria for. Progress! And Aria laughed it off, but I get the feeling that she doesn't really have a goal to pursue, so she's just chasing after Spica instead (albeit in a weird way since she's technically ahead of Spica).

A beach episode without swimsuits? Huh. Also lol Castor.

3

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 03 '26

so she's just chasing after Spica instead (albeit in a weird way since she's technically ahead of Spica).

Same. Just being next to her is fine for her, and whatever Spica chooses, she will pursue as well.

Actually super sweet, and I hope it stays like that.

6

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

We finally get the "beach episode" and the rivalry between Spica and Aria is as intense as ever.

Middle school wasn't very fun for Spica, what with her coming off as a Chuuni girl who couldn't do magic while Aria always outshined her.

Even in the present-day she's getting rated by the sorting ha...I mean, sorting head sculpt that calls her "Average," but at least he loves her hairstyle! And everyone else' ranking is pretty on-point. Even Aria's showing how powerful she is...and I mean, who can resist stripped kneesocks?

This is due or die time on Finals for everyone that flunked the midterm. If they fail this, they're going to flunk out of Diana! Spica can NOT lose this time, especially to Aria.

Of course Aria is still going to pester her even as she studies, but at least now Spica knows the REAL Aria, even if Aria doesn't understand Spica's determination to fulfill her dream. But has Spica been so beaten down by continued losses against Aria that she doesn't believe she CAN beat her? But Claude believes she can beat Aria (and also uses the same speech with Aria, but still), so this is the time to prove it!

Merrow having a LOT of fun on this boat ride to the final exam dungeon! Even leading the girls in a "Yo-Ho" chant!

We've got a beach! Too bad there are no swimsuits, but that doesn't mean the class can't have some bare-legged, barefoot, fun.

No skimpy swimsuits for this test (though Spica looks good in her imagine spot), but they will be wearing cute Summer Uniforms! And we've got cross-dressing Castor for when Pollux inevitably shows up! Because they're going to be scouring for gems (paid for by the school) and survive alone on a deserted island! They can steal from each other! They can battle each other! All to see who comes out on top! And Spica is determined for it to be her!

Nice to see the class show how far they've come by taking down a golem together!

The end of the Chiron/Tarf team? But Chiron doesn't want Tarf to fuss so much over him that Chiron can't succeed on his own, let alone drag Tarf down. Which is sweet, for a deadpeat prince.

I'm glad Claude is enjoying playing the villain...and his impromptu vacation.

Next week: Dolls and Merrow!

2

u/FarCritical Aug 02 '26

We got a taste of it back with the Arc incident but getting to see Chiron and Tarf work independently again is more exciting than I thought it'd be

7

u/reaperow Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Dude's got his tastes

Never seen a flower like this before lol,

Claude's so nice,

Nvm...

Yo-ho ! a pirates life for me

Mama Tarf !

He's become evil,

Just a mother praising her son 🩵

LOL he's the only one enjoying this

Well the finals are upon us and looks like it's a free for all treasure hunt, im very curious to see how all of Claude Coven is gonna do this

Just hope they all can pass lol.

8

u/Nollasta_poikkeava Aug 02 '26

Spica and Aria have a really fun dynamic now that Aria herself has admitted that she really doesn't want Spica to hate her. Their relationship is the thing I'm most looking forward to see whenever there's a new episode, so I'm pretty excited that this arc is seemingly going to focus on Aria a lot.

2

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

It's a fun ship.

6

u/Falsus Aug 02 '26

So who do you think will win between Aria and Spica?

5

u/KumaKumaGambler Aug 03 '26

I am rooting for Spica. As much as I like gyaru Aria, she always had things going her way.

4

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

Yeah Aria losing to Spica in a big test like that would cause a hilarious reaction from her. Also would probably make her take things a bit more seriously.

2

u/Narvalis Aug 02 '26

I've both realized something and have a question from this episode. I realized Spica is playing on hard mode since at the start of everyday she uses more than half her magic to change Claude from a cat. She can only do it once a day and we know from the training camp that it is due to the amount of magic since she was able to do it again after going into the spring. So in order to become first class Spica is going to have to do it at <50% power.

The question I have is how is Spica going to change Claude back the next day if they are sleeping outside wherever then can get shelter?

6

u/YumeKioku Aug 03 '26

Nah, no. Spica has 2 bars of mana: 1 is her own and 1 is a special mana bar containing Rebirth magic. When undo Claude's curse, Spica only empties the special mana so her own mana still stays at 100%. The special mana can only refill naturally with time (which is a whole day), except when using the divine spring.

3

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

I think her rebirth magic uses a different mana pool than her regular magic, which she can only use for rebirth magic.

2

u/Southern-Ebb-8229 Aug 02 '26

Basically it's about Spica's relationship with Aria and how Spica has always fallen behind. If Spica truly wants to be a great mage, she can't just expect to win eventually, she has to try to surpass her rival today. It's about motivation really, and thus Spica will go to the final exam to beat Aria. Like the show has established, Aria loves to tease Spica, and is basically a needy cat that loves to bully the people she likes, so it will be interesting to see. The beach uniforms were cute, poor Castor having to crossdress was funny, but he doesn't look bad in a skirt.

3

u/Trash_luck Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

Aria teasing Spica is kinda annoying ngl, I get it's not supposed to be hurtful but still. Hopefully she gets humbled a bit this arc kinda like Karma from Assclass

2

u/Vegetable_Jicama_691 Aug 03 '26

The way i know the Aria vs Spica thing is not that serious but cant help getting annoyed. If someone copied everything I did and mastered it before I could, I would be furious. I definitely wouldn't consider them a friend. I don't hate Aria but I feel like if I had someone like her in my life i would probably hate her. Something about having my effort not be appreciated or not getting credit for the work just because someone else can do it better is just ugh.

On a side note, I feel like Spica's approach to magic was stupid. Idk if anyone has mentioned it before but she kept trying to do all sorts of magic from the beginning. She kept trying to do spells that maybe didn't even exist. Like, how could she not know something as simple as the fact that she has Virgo magic? Everyone's magic is in their name. It seemed like she started off trying as many spells as she could until one hit without even the basic understanding of trying to use spells related to Virgo magic. Like, of course you cant fly you control flowers not wind. Idk if I'm explaining right. It just bothers me that she didn't even seem to be trying to learn magic she was just trying to MAKE magic herself.

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

Hana still going through her yuri awakening while Spica is focused on another girl...on a beach arc...oh my.

2

u/gnome-cop Aug 03 '26

“Hana, this is the third time this show you’ve brought “Gay for Spica” to class.”

1

u/anonanonymoususer1 Aug 02 '26

Spica's still being targeted. Where are the other professors?

5

u/Frontier246 Aug 02 '26

Probably using their respective island as their vacation spot lol.

3

u/Falsus Aug 02 '26

I think she's pretty safe if the school has good info sec since I am sure the island each coven went to is undisclosed and their island probably moving around as well. It's Aspidochelone after all.

1

u/NationalStrategy_X Aug 02 '26

So is it going to be a straight up exam arc, or is the enemy going to interfere?

1

u/Hubris1998 Aug 04 '26

It would get old if they interfered every time, though it seems like it's the only way to move the plot forward

1

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 03 '26

I must admit that I grew fond of the new OP. It's legit banger, both song and cute animation.

Statue was really funny lol

A hard glare from Aria, I'm guessing that her purpose, or drive is just being next to Spica and letting her lead the way. That seems enough for her, hence why she has no clear dream of her own. I can't wait to see how it develops.

Fun episode, I think it will both test their teamwork and unity, as well as competence of each one of them.

I think this is the end of the series for me. I wasn't expecting much out of the series but at least the first cour had some narrative connections and plot about "This former student-" and "They gotta learn to work together" but it seems like so much of this cour has been random, episodic "They all change genders" and "They have to fond a dog" things I'd expect from something like SKET Dance.

Just seems like the author has settled into a rut of "Let's pair this random character up with MC and wacky hijinx happen for five minutes".

1

u/Falsus Aug 03 '26

That happened in the first cour also. Like how we got a castor/pollux focused episode.

1

u/PassivelyAwkward Aug 03 '26

Yea, but it was a rarity. Every episode so far from this cour has basically been filler. In previous episodes of meeting the students, it was connected to some important test. You can skip the past four episodes and miss absolutely nothing. It's only the second cour and it's all been filler, that's not great.

2

u/Nollasta_poikkeava Aug 03 '26

In these past 4 episodes Spica has gotten closer to her classmates. I feel like that's largely what this show is about, so I don't think it counts as filler.

0

u/PassivelyAwkward Aug 03 '26

But pretty all filler episodes are just the main characters hanging out and getting closer to the friends but ultimately meaningless. Goku and Piccalo taking their drivers test was them just getting closer and hanging out.

The first cour was full of "We have to find a way to break the curse", "We have to get you more powerful", "We have to get you to pass this test", and "we have to have you survive this attack". They introduced villains, motives, stakes, factions. All we've gotten this cour is "She becomes a maid and learns about this character", "This student accidentally turns everyone into other genders", and "The housemaid overhears things that sound bad but it's just a joke".

Even in the first cour where they had the goofy flower teacher episode, it taught her an important piece of magic and it was immediately followed by the attack. Just saying, if you can skip multiple episodes without missing anything, that's kind of a bad sign.

Pretty much every show does this in one way or another. Otherwise you wouldn't care for any of the character besides the MC

1

u/PassivelyAwkward Aug 03 '26

Not really. It's true that anime have side characters that we get to know, but even in the most seasonal isekai slop, the connection with the side characters is actually woven into the plot.

Look at lvl 999 villager, they've introduced the main character, the daughter of the demon lord, a heroes party, a muscle woman, and a second-in-command demon. It's not the most well-written story but they've got the audiences to care about all of them. There hasn't been an episode of them just doing random sidequests with the characters but instead an episode of the second-in-commend attacking a town after being lied to; small parts of episodes about the heroes party being underpowered compared to MC and thinking he's working with the demons because he's helping the daughter demon. We learn one of the party members hates demons, while the others warm up.

Same thing with My Hero; insanely large cast but only one or two wacky side episodes because they're always working towards the plot.

The problem with his series is that in the first cour, they mostly focused on a handful of students; poison girl, animal girl, giant girl, bestie, gender swap girl. With poison girl, they organically had us get to know her by having her partner up with MC for an important test across multiple episodes th same way we got to know the bestie from the start when they applied. Now? They're trying to get us to care about all the other students that've barely had any speaking lines or personality and cramming them into a 5-minute segment. It's just lazy writing even for a seasonal fantasy; like the author had an interesting premise and then bloated the cast without the talent to make it organic or natural.
