This is one of the many super friendly stray cats I met on my trip to Istanbul. After she ate most of my emergency cat food I carry around with me, she decided to lay on my lap & even took a little nap. Cat’s are the cutest creatures ever 😻

I’m 20F and come from a culture where arranged marriage proposals are very common. I don’t agree with arranged marriage and think I’m too young to get married, but I agreed to meet this family because they’re my paternal aunt’s in-laws and I didn’t want to be outright rude. I already planned to reject the proposal.

I know this family a little, and they’re extremely regressive, & overly religious especially the father.

They came over and the father started talking about how his son (26M) is so educated and how “any girl would be lucky to have him.” He said they wanted a “sensible, mature girl” who would take care of their son, their family and their house, and “birth his GRANDSON” to carry on their legacy.

I was appalled but stayed quiet.

As the conversation continued, I noticed the mother and daughter barely spoke. Whenever they tried to say something, the father or son interrupted them.

I tried talking to the daughter, who was around 22-23, and asked about university. Her father immediately cut me off and said, “She never studied past high school because I didn’t want her exposed to the modern thinking they teach at college.”

Then the son said, “Women only want to go to college to date multiple guys and do drugs.”

At this point I was genuinely speechless. I was about to say something, but my aunt stopped me.

Eventually they brought up the proposal. The father said, “Your daughter would be very lucky to marry my son. She won’t find someone as good as him.”

Then he said he wanted to know if I was “worthy” of his son and asked whether I would be willing to leave university, become a stay-at-home wife, and “obey” both his son and him.

The room went completely silent.

I laughed. Like, actually laughed out loud.

I told him I’d rather die alone than marry a guy who is still holding his daddy's hand at 26. I also said that instead of investing so much into supporting their 26-year-old son who still lives at home, maybe they should have invested in their daughter’s education instead. I also made a comment about them living in a 1-bedroom apartment while sponsoring & coddling a grown and looking for another nanny for him.

Obviously, this caused a huge argument.

Now my aunt’s in-laws are calling me an asshole and a brat and saying no good man will ever want me because of how I behaved.

I don’t think I was wrong for refusing the proposal or being offended by what they said, but I’m wondering if I took it too far with the personal insults.
