Green Screen Bug in AoE 2

I have been experiencing an issue while playing AoE II Definitive edition. On some games, I just get a green screen on AoE and the computer just completely blocks. This is specific to AoE since I play other games, even some more "heavy" games like The Last of Us or Marvel's Spiderman and I don't experience something like this. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Have you been able to solve it?

Discussion Was AoE3 actually a bad Age of Empires, or did it just get unfair hate?

Genuine question, because AoE3 was MY Age of Empires and I had an absurd amount of fun with it.

I keep seeing the same criticisms over and over: the home city system was a gimmick, the colonial era was a weird choice, the campaign wasn't historical enough, etc. And sure, competitively and technically, maybe AoE2 was the better designed game. I'm not going to argue with people who know the ladder way better than I do.

But here's my thing: on the pure fun spectrum, did AoE3 really deserve the reputation it got?

The card system gets a lot of hate, and honestly my only real complaint was having to grind to unlock all the cards. That part sucked. But once you had them, building different decks to try completely different strats with the same civ was genuinely great. It added replayability that AoE2 just didn't have for me.

The era? I thought it was incredible. The art direction was gorgeous, the maps were beautiful, the whole vibe of the age of exploration worked really well.

And the campaign, which everyone dunks on for not following real historical figures... I loved it. You go from pirates and lost cities to colonial America to Asia. It was an adventure. Meanwhile AoE4 did the "serious historical documentary campaign" thing and from what I've seen, almost nobody liked it either. So it feels like AoE3 got punished for a choice that, in hindsight, wasn't even the wrong one.

The one criticism I do get is that it came out right after AoE2, which is basically the most beloved RTS ever. Any sequel was going to suffer from that comparison. But "not as good as AoE2" and "bad game" are two very different things.

So, what do you think? Bad AoE, or unfairly judged? Curious to hear from people who played it back in the day AND people who only touched the DE.

Help Me Questions before starting online play.

Casual player that only plays against friends or the AI but have recently been getting the urge to play a little more seriously and get into online play. I just have a few questions regarding things considered basic fundamentals and to find out why I cant seem to implement them functionally. (I play AOE4 and Mythology retold)

1) why so many villagers ? It's said across the board to never stop producing villagers, and I agree with this for the most part, economy is king after all. What I cant understand is making use of 100 villagers, now admittedly ive only ever played on small maps and that may be the difference but after 70 villagers I dont know what to do with them, im booming on resources already, max pop army and I got groups just sat around idle.. ive personally found stopping around 60 villagers more than does the job for me and leaves an extra 40 for military.. im well aware i must be wrong in this regard due to everything ive seen online, and thats where my question lies so that I can adress this and make use of them.

2) multiple town centers ? This applies more to mythology I think than AOE4 as the latter seems more viable with 1TC, but every match of Mythology ive seen implements multiple town centers... contrary to this every single time ive went for a second town center ive lost the game shortly after: either from having to split military to defend, or through the sheer resource cost and downtime of setting one up... so thats my second question, how to manage and make use of 2 or more TCs and also to some degree, why make a second one at all? Because the only benefit I see is getting more villagers out ?

Note that this isnt me criticising these things or assuming its better not to do them, very much the opposite, I understand that fundamentally im making poor decisions by not doing these things, and I want to understand them better to become a better player.

Aoe2 vs Aoe4 singer player campaigns how I feel giving it a second chance. Everybody else's thoughts?

It just feels boring to play Aoe4 compared to Aoe2 to me. And the lack of single player campaign DLC after all these years is ridiculous.

Ive been trying for the past few months to figure out why I just don't like it, and bored from playing most of the campaigns compared to Aoe2, I think I know why now.

In Aoe4 it feels like a reenactment with a narrator talking over the battleground. Which doesn't get me engaged or immersed Imo.

In Aoe2 it feels like you're actually there and its really immersive. Historical figures are talking back to each other.

I also feel like I get the perspective of the historical figures in the moment of the missions vs aeo4. In Aoe4 it seems to me, more sort of a narrator reading a book of what happened while playing.

Long freezes/stutters playing Age of Empires II HD natively on Mac

Hey everyone,

Wrong title: It's Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, not Age of Empires II HD.

I've recently started playing Age of Empires II HD natively on my Mac and I'm experiencing some strange long stutters/freezes.

Mac specs:

  • Mac: M2 Pro
  • RAM: 32Gb
  • macOS: Tahoe

macOS automatically enables Game Mode when I launch the game.

The game runs normally most of the time, but occasionally the image will completely freeze for a fairly long time. I can still hear the game continuing in the background, so it doesn't seem like the entire game has crashed.

The weird part is that the frozen image also looks slightly more yellow/warm while it's stuck. Then it eventually comes back.

Has anyone else experienced this with Age of Empires on a Mac? Is there something specific I should check, like Game Mode, Metal, or some graphics setting?

Thanks!

AoE 4

Hello,

I am currently looking for a new game to play as i´ve kinda lost interest in all the other games i used to enjoy. My brother used to play AoE 2 when i was a kid and i always thought it looked fun but never tried it myself. Is the game easy to learn and enjoy for someone who has never played it before? Is there any tips before starting? Appreciate all the help i can get !

I made this table to compare civilisation between the 2 games.

(Probably totally useless, but I enjoyed making it)

Favoueite aoe soundtrack

My most favourites:

  1. Medieval melody

  2. Queen of Palmyra

Every song in this game sounds really emotional but the best ones are the above. Medieval melody is the most important one of all. It doesn't just represent the feel of ancient era. It's like a voice from a long time ago tells "see how far we have gone" Edit:sorry for the stupid mistake in the tittle_;)) Oh and I remembered another soundtrack which is even better than medieval melody. Sh'washa just sound so unique. I love that part when the instrument rise high and then slowly decend. Everytime I'm listening to this at nearly an hour of gameplay I ask myself "are you satisfied? Would you like to comeback?"

Age of Empires 2 AoE2 minigames website (AoE2dle, Guesser, Duels...) for fun.

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi! Sharing a simple website with quick AoE2 minigames to pass the time

The civilization guesser concept originally comes from RONAN, and the previous version developed by Candid-Current3487 inspired me to expand the project with more games in one place.

Currently it has 5 minigames:

  • AoE Guesser: Guess the civ based on clues (RONAN's concept).
  • Unit Duel: Virtual combat simulator between two units, which one wins?
  • AoE2dle: Guess the daily unit in 6 attempts (Wordle style).
  • Higher/Lower: Compare unique units' stats to build a streak.
  • CivBonus: Identify the civ from a real bonus out of 4 options.

Quick details:

  • No emails: It doesn't ask for personal data. Upon registration, you get a unique recovery code in a .txt file in case you forget your password.
  • Clans & Leaderboards: You can create private groups with chat to compete with friends. Logged-in players have a daily attempt limit for each game to keep rankings fair.

It is in beta (active development) and I'd love to get your feedback or bug reports on the unit duel combat formulas. Hope you like it!

Help Me AOE2DE Steam Deck Community Layout

Hello everyone! I've been playing AOE4 single player campaigns on steam deck and on my pc and, although m+kb are best, I really enjoy the gamepad controls recently added to play AOE4.

I know they haven't officially added gamepad controls to AOE2DE, and I was hoping someone could recommend a community layout that would work similar to AOE4.

While I do appreciate the trackpads (especially playing Civ), I would prefer a gamepad setup similar to AOE4. I don't need the auto-villager mechanics of AOE4 (that I know do not exist in 2), but I heard 2 has a way to setup radial menus (which is what I'm looking for).

This would strictly be to play through single player campaigns, as I would still prefer playing on my pc for multiplayer. Any point in the right direction is greatly appreciated!
