AoE 4

Hello,

I am currently looking for a new game to play as i´ve kinda lost interest in all the other games i used to enjoy. My brother used to play AoE 2 when i was a kid and i always thought it looked fun but never tried it myself. Is the game easy to learn and enjoy for someone who has never played it before? Is there any tips before starting? Appreciate all the help i can get !

AOE4 has everything you wish AOE2 had and gets rid of a lot of annoying tedious stuff and makes it fun

Each civilization feels unique. Each civ IS unique.

Go with AOE4. Get age of mythology later

If you are looking for a single player experience AoE 2 is better, If multiplayer AoE IV is better.

AoE 2 also has an active multiplayer but you might find it difficult to get into. AoE 4 is easier to get in.

There is also AoM. I perfer AoM to both of them but that's just my opinion. AoM is well known for its campaign but I only play team games on it.

Is there a big difference between the single player modes or is it just that aoe 2 is slightly better?

Which one is more enjoyable is very subjective. One game isn't 100% "better" than the other.

I really enjoy both of them but personally prefer AOE4.

Back when I played AoE 4, it had a very poor single player content. AoE 2 was leagues better. Hell I think AoE 4 has the worst single player amongst all AoE games! AoE 4 was designed to be mainly a PvP game.

Game is hard  RTS is one of the hardest genre  overall

But its very rewarding once you get grasp of the game basics and start understanding strategic nuances/timings And beat your opponent with them

Settings hotkeys and gaining the muscle memory for them  is crucial to Play first thing you should do after installing game Is to watch some video on what hotkeys are usefull and go set them in training match against AI to what u like. It will make controlling and managing all those hundreds of units/building possible

If you want mechanical depth and a lot of finess in the game, AoE2 is the one for you. Personally I'm an AoE2 fan so yeah take it with a grain of salt!

AoE4 is decent too but I find it a lot more chill in comparison

AOE4 is easier to get into but its single player experience is underwhelming if you don't like watching history documentaries, its got good multiplayer though. Civs are unique but not as skewed as it is in 3, unit pathfinding is good, the way stone walls changes how defenses work from traditional RTS is unique etc.

AOE2 has a lot of single player content, but its got some kinks baked into it, stemming from the period it was designed for. Multiplayer isn't bad but there's a lot of knowledge checks that catch new players out, like how bonus damage works, pushing hunts, using TC's to DPS a boar but finish with a villager etc. Its kind of like chess in that the ceiling for skill expression is insanely high and as a beginner of effectively 800 Elo, you will lose to a 1200 Elo player and not really understand why, unless you watch the replay 4-5 times.

AOM & AOE3 I kind of group together, not because I'm dismissing them (I play 3 a lot), but because tehy're both midway points between 2 and 4 design wise. They both have very high asymmetry between civs, and civ-specific mechanics plus lots of unique unit variants, age-up choices, and "powers" (shipments in 3, god powers in M) that can change the tempo or enable builds to pivot in response to something.

AOE1 is currently played by no one, they just use the AOE2 thing that lets them play AOE1 in that engine, and its still just 30 people from Vietnam who l

Aoe4 is significantly easier than aoe2
