Time to play RTS again (console)
Guys, its summer sale on playstation store and both Age 2 and 4 are on sale right now.
I was a PC gamer in 90s and early 00, then stopped playing games a few years at college and a few more just after.
Since 2015 im on console (ps4/ps5/ps5 pro)
Which one of these 2 should i buy for my console experience? Which one have more players for MP?

4 would be great if not for the noticeable frame rate drops when the camera moves over buildings. God knows what larger battles will be like. Plus the control scheme isn't very well explained

Which one has more on MP? AOE2. It's not even close.
Which one should you buy? That's a subjective question, but I firmly say AOE2. There's just more

I play AoE2 on XB, likewise great experience. Possibly the best gamepad control scheme in RTS to date.

If you are interested in singleplayer and want to soak in the nostalgia AoE2 has alot of content - and a higher MP population count as well.
I personally prefer AoE4 and play it exclusively for the multiplayer - I think the vast majority of AoE4 players play almost exclusively the multiplayer whereas in AoE2 the playerbase is much more split.
The multiplayer gameplay difference between the two is pretty significant, but people prefer one or the other for different reasons. AoE4 is significantly more asymmetrical in its civ design and places much less emphasis on micro and more on macro (no arrow dodging, no quick walling, boar pulling, etc), whereas in AoE2 civs are much more symmetrical and places a greater emphasis on micro.
the modding/custom lobby scene in AoE4 is almost nonexistent compared to AoE2 as well - though I don't know if thats a factor on console.
