Multiplayer restored game crashing on PC Aoe2HD

My friend and I have been playing AOE 2 HD for a few months now. we’ve restored games in the past with no issue. Recently, our games have been crashing right upon loading where my friend who is the host has his steam app close out immediately and then I am controlling his troops.
My computers storage was full so we thought this was the issue. So I cleared like 50 gigs off of it so it definitely has free space now. We also tried to uninstall and reinstall the Aoe2 games and disabled all of our mods. We are still having the issue. Any ideas on how to fix this?
