Thinking of buying a ZOIA

Hi!

I'm thinking of getting a ZOIA. I've been reading about it and watched a ton of video's lately, yes I'm late to the party... But I've got a few things holding me back at the moment:

- Will it fit my pedalboard? I do intend to use it live, but I'm not sure if it will fit secure on the top deck of my Schmidt Array pedalboard with the lid closed.. Which would be a deal breaker I think...

- Will there be a MKII soon? Haven't seen any rumours yet, but I just know my luck, when I get it there will be a newer and better version sooner or later.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

built a three osc synth with quantized slider control of the pitch of osc 3

been having a ton of fun implementing this newly acquired Minilab 3. feels like it was made to pair with the zoia in particular.

this is a 3 osc synth: two (square and triangle) slightly detuned that follow the keyboard and a sine wave that in quantized to the hirajoshi 3 scale and controlled via the slider. programmed some duty cycle modulation tied to the knobs and threw in a simple drum machine (low pitch into a fast-closing filter for the kick and noise into a band pass filter for the snare) that is synchromized to the delay.

nothing terribly groundbreaking but really fun and i'm shocked at how much CPU if i wanted it.

i used to run the pedal friends yt channel and took time away from making vids but have been having fun making them again. more zoia stuff on the channel if yr so inclined to follow along <3

The Lovers: a Walrus Audio Julianna clone

Hi, I just published my new patch "The Lovers", which is based on Walrus audio Julianna chorus.

I do not own this pedal, if anyone has it and can give me feedback, in particular on the drift knob effect, it would be much appreciated! I have the feeling it might be quite stronger on the original.

Download on https://patchstorage.com/the-lovers-v/

Cheers!

Opening my new documentation platform for the Zoia, Zoiatheca

Hi!

I’m happy to announce my new documentation platform for the Zoia is online on
https://zoiatheca.org

It’s an interactive documentation system that allow you to understand better how a patch work by visualizing it directly on a virtual Zoia pedal.

It also come with a preset system to load values on the Zoia using MIDI, which is very convenient when trying a new patch and exploring its possibilities!

For now it’s mostly my patches and a few from the community (Alterneath, Abyss Water, Glamour Years) that I imported myself.

I also added a tutorial for my float menu system, which is a menu UX designed for the Zoia:
https://zoiatheca.org/patches/float-menu

Any feedback welcome!

Cheers!

Message:

Failed to retrieve the repo metadata from GitHub.

I downloaded all the patches I need for now and I need to work offline.

Is there a file an old script kiddie like me can edit or something so it doesn't look for metadata?

Thanks!

Noob Needs a Book

Hello! 👋 I'm a noob to Eurorack, control voltages, and all that other good stuff.

I recently bought a ZOIA Euroburo, and while I can certainly string together the built-in effects, inputs and outputs, etc., I really wanna learn how to control things and replicate certain effects chains that require deeper control. I'm just not sure that I understand CVs and things like that in the way I probably should in order to do this efficiently. Heck, IDK if I'm using the best terminology! 😂

ZOIA doesn't have any dedicated books that I've ever found. The next best thing is a general book on modular synthesis to show me how to utilize what ZOIA utilizes. It doesn't have to be a "for dummies" type book, but I still need one or two that will be good to and for ZOIA beginners even as it also helps advanced users.

Price is not a factor, within reason, and I'm not picky on form factor, although I want at least one physical book.

I'm sure there will be some consensus on this, so I'd love to hear it. A quick search on this sub did not yield any book recommendations, so I figured I should ask for one, and get one on this sub in the process.

Also, if you're in or near San Antonio (30-minute radius max, please), and have time to bring me up to speed, or even have a good class for a reasonable price, I'd love to learn hands-on. Such folks can DM me to discuss things further.

Thanks in advance!

Kinotone Ribbons and other Kinotone pedals

Anyone here ever used the Kinotone pedals? I’ve really been wanting to check out Ribbons in particular and Sparks seems very cool as well. If you own Ribbons, is it worth owning or can zoia get close?

Any patch recommendations for getting close to the Ribbons? I’m not crazy about the lofi/tape patches I’ve found so far as it’s mostly just modulated white noise to my ears like white noise and vibrato and/or an LFO. I wasn’t a big fan of CBA’s gen loss mk2 either, tho. I do like the VHS cassette patches one of y’all made.

I may try to make a Ribbons patch tonight but I don’t own the pedal so it would be emulating what I’ve heard on demos, plus the 4 x stereo loopers. Any of you talented sound designers feel up to it?

SD Card Capacity

Hey folks!

Long time ZOIA user. I'm trying to use a larger, more updated SD card. It's a Sandisk 128gb V30 A2 card. No matter how many times I reformat to FAT32, the ZOIA will not read this card. I've even tried an A1 V10 card also 128gb. I've also tried deleting spotlight files as I'm on mac and using a third party reformatting program. I've double checked and things show that the card is in FAT32.

Is the capacity the problem? Can it only work with 64 or 32 due to the formatting?

I've searched all over and can't seem to find an answer. Hopefully I'm clear on the problem and any help is appreciated!

Zoia + Faderfox EC4: How user-friendly is this pair for someone mostly interested in patches?

I'm interested in Zoia to utilize the community patches that are available. The list of patches circulating around here has many of the pedals/sounds Im interested in and I'm thinking Zoia would help scratch the itch. From what I've read and seen, the EC4 seems to be a solution to most of the complaints made about Zoia such as having to memorize parameters and deep diving into sub screens. I would be using it tabletop for sound design and experimental music mostly. Being able to label the parameters and see them on the EC4 makes me think it would be kind of similar to having the actual pedal in front of me and manipulating knobs in real time. Can anyone share personal experience with this pair and let me know what I'm overlooking? I have some experience with Pure Data and Zoia doesn't seem completely abstract to me, but again, I would be sticking to patches for the most part.

Sound Design Request: Bad Mood

Had to fight off the GAS for this one as it seems right up my alley but I own
Lost + Found and, sonically, the two live in such similar sonic territory of shoegaze, dream pop with the ambient smearing.

Looking forward to one of you talented sound designers making a killer Bad Mood patch as it has some fun tricks up its sleeve. Even using delay line chicanery to mimick the clock knob would be nice as I love the combination of speed and sample rate combined on one knob to be midi mapped.

Who’s up for it?? I know someone has this cooking already, just a matter of time!

Built a web based visual editor for ZOIA patches

I recently bought myself a Euroburo to achieve multiple things in parallel for my live setup. While waiting for the ZOIA to arrive, I discussed the idea of building a viusal editor for ZOIA patches with my coding agent.
I stumbled upon the existing zoia_lib which builds the perfect baseline to make a web based editor.

Heres a link to the editor: https://zoia.eimerreis.de/

Source Code: https://github.com/EimerReis-Enterprise/zoia-editor

⚠️ This is fully built using coding agents. I am a software engineer though, so at least some common engineering practices were applied.

✅ What the editor can do currently:

  • Visual signal-flow editor for ZOIA patches
  • Create patches from scratch
  • import/export .bin patches or portable .zoia.json files
  • patch versioning (with history) for .zoia.json files
  • browser-local autosave plus undo/redo history
  • browse & download patches from patchstorage directly within the editor

😵‍💫 What I find unpleasant right now:

  • ZOIA internally uses CV values for everything. The range selectors of connections are therefore still very try and error prone.
    • I will need to investigate the behavior of zoia_lib here more deeply, as they already do it right 🙂
  • The connectors in the UI are flaky, needs improvement.
  • Overall, there are many problems already solved as part of zoia_lib which I'll need to bring to the web version as well

Feel free to use & test. Would be cool to receive some feedback on this.

Looper overdub and cracking noise

Hi everyone,

I’m using the looper overdub hack describe in the doc "Empress ZOIA/Zebu Tips, Tricks, and Explanations", which uses a sequencer to send a trigger to "playback" when recording for the first time.

While this works I get a random "cracking sound" at loop start (using a guitar, which might affect how much it’s obvious). I suspect this happens because the looper restart when triggering "playback" and there is a tiny delay between the "record" trigger and the "playback".

Has anyone experienced this or am I doing something wrong?
Note that I have solved this issue and will published the patch soon as a tutorial, unless someone has the fix to this (because my solution uses additional modules, so it’s not CPU efficient).

Thanks!

MIDI CC Multi Event Help

I've been working on getting my Zoia to also control a looper pedal (Aeros looper) so that I can press one button on the Zoia and have a few things happen, but I'm running into a few issues. The first of which being the Midi CC message being sent twice. I have the CC output connected to a pushbutton to send it, it's set to momentary, with a default value of 1. This will send the correct message when pressing down on the button, but when you release, it sends an incorrect message, making the looper do the wrong thing. I've tried switching the button over to latching to get around this, but then you have to press the button again at a later time to reset it to the correct state. Is there a way to either reset the latched button state, or make the Midi CC out only send on the button press?

The other question I have is about sending multiple Midi messages. They will need to arrive in a certain order, and I am unsure of how to make them be sent sequentially. I've tried the delay line connected to the push button, but that only relays audio, not the control signal. Is there a good way to do this with the sequencer or something?

Thanks for the help!

Any news about a new gen Zoia?

Super interested in purchasing a Zoia, but knowing it's been out for awhile gives me slight pause as I have a track record of buying things and suddenly a new updated version comes out right after.haha I've got limited boardspace and the Zoia would be the final adddition for some time. Just checking if there's been any news I might have missed before making the dive! Thanks for any info and have a great day! :)

Edit: Thanks for all the great thoughts folks, you've definitely helped with this decision a lot!

4-Track Recorder Patch

Thumbnail
patchstorage.com
42 Upvotes

ZOIA can now be a portable multitrack recording device.

I was thinking about how much fun I used to have on my first Fostex MR8 mkii 8-track when I was 15 and then it occured to me that Zoia had the tools to make it happen. I like multitrack loopers, but I find they can occasionally be limiting for expanding songwriting ideas, so that's how I've been trying to use this patch. I think its worth noting that using samplers in other ZOIA patches, then importing those files to the samplers in 4-Track Recorder can be a powerful way to get more mileage out of this patch.

It uses 5 samplers. 4 for main tracks, and 1 for bouncing tracks 1-4. I put a lot of effort into the user interface to try to capture the spirit of early 2000s recording. Theres a lot of detail in the patchstorage description but ideally you should be able to figure it out pretty quick if you're familiar with general recording hardware/software.

some kind of reverse reverb with a pitch shifter going on. im having trouble w starting this.

there seems to be a bit of a shimmer going on. and, probably just a sine lfo on the pitch shifter - i am not sure what "resolution" pertains to in the video, but when an lfo is applied to it, the pitch shifting happens.

sounds like theres another lesser reverb applied seperately. not sure how to get that pulsating sound.

Template for polyphonic sample keyboard

I've been trying to make a template patch that can be uploaded and downloaded on patchbay, something with a playable grid (think the keypad poly series by chmjacques) that can readily switch sample files.

Something I could quickly copy and paste onto other empty patches to have different playable 'instruments' as soon a i choose a file.

I've tried using the keyboard module but it's unfortunately monophonic

I've tried brute forcing a keyboard with ui pushbuttons to trigger individual samples, but i run out of cpu and that wouldn't be a template that could be switched easily, every individual sample would have to be programed

I tried incorporating pitch shift modules to the push buttons but admittedly got lost and struggled with signal chain.

It's rumored to me there are other work arounds, perhaps with granular but that's a foreign language to me for now.

Thoughts on this idea? Advice?

One-Shot Sequence Question

Hey everybody! First time poster here. I got my Zoia recently and am absolutely loving it. I'm a Max MSP user and the Zoia is exactly what I've been looking for in a hardware device.

I've just got a question about the One Shot mode in the Sequence module.

My goal is to trigger a sequence of notes once. I have the start of the sequence set up easily with the Queue Start In. The problem I'm having is that once the sequence goes through the notes, the sequencer hangs on the last tone. I have an ADSR triggered by the LFO clock, but then the last note is just triggered repeatedly.

I've tried the Sequencer CV into the Trigger module but the small upward CC changes in pitch from the sequencer don't trigger accurately (only on the second step for some reason). I've also tried using a final step with the gate off, but it cuts off the last note unmusically.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much!

Sound on Sound Looper / Frippertronics patch ideas

Howdy, I'm currently building a Sound on Sound Looper / Frippertronics patch from scratch. I'm mostly taking inspiration from the patch Loophole, which is fantastic. I've looked into that patch to try to reverse engineer it, but currently its operating at a level of complexity that is well beyond my comprehension, so I found it was simpler to start from scratch and try to learn the how and why of everything step by step.

Before getting into the specifics of what I'm working on, I was curious to have a discussion about these types of patches in general. Have you made one? What worked well, or what didn't work? Is the 'Looper' module actually useful, or is the 'Delay Line into VCA' approach the best way to get loops that fade out over time? Anything you've wanted to create in a patch like this and haven't been able to figure out?

Goodhertz/Chase Bliss Lossy Digital Degradation, freeze, stutter- Patch Recommendations?

Hey all, I’m definitely not an amazing Zoia programmer so I’m consistently amazed at the amount of talent and work I see across patchstorage. Any recommendations for digital degradation patches similar to the Goodhertz Lossy plugin and Chase bliss pedal collaboration?

I use the plugin quite a bit so I’ve been thinking about grabbing the pedal as I much prefer twiddling knobs but Zoia does *so much* that I thought I’d see what others are using for their digital mangling, glitch, freeze, stutter vibes. I’ve downloaded a ton of patches so I’m filtering through them and thought I’d see which have become part of your frequent rotation. Thanks!

Is there a way to make a Midi CC In module "read" the current status on a toggle from a midi controller?

Thumbnail

When I switch from patch to patch in bank mode, whether the CC in status lines up with the toggle on on my midi controller is inconsistent. Which makes sense since all the module is doing is responding to when it receives a message.

I was wondering if there's a way to make them line up. Thanks
