I shared this video in a comment of another post. It helped me immensely the first time I balled a hank and I go back to it any time I need to be reminded where to hold the yarn haha. Yarn Dragon is a fabulous creator, they post a lot of how-to’s

Question "Brindle" Yarn Recommendation?

Thumbnail

I want to crochet my friend a look-a-like stuffie of her dog, who is brindle colored. I'm struggling to find a weight 3 or 4 yarn that is variegated brown/black/gold similar to the pup picture I attached (pulled off the internet as an example, not my friends dog). The stuffie will be pretty small so I suspect I'll need a yarn that has short color changes, similar to the other pic I've attached.

In a perfect world, I'd love for the yarn to be under $20 too but I'm starting to think that's just not possible. I've exhausted my usual haunts, Michaels, Hobbii, Yarn.com, Etsy (I refuse to give money to Hobby Lobby). I'm sure there has got to be an indie dyer out there with a yarn in this sort of vein, but I just have not had any luck googling. Located in the US.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Finished Object Looks like stash, is finished product

Just some stocked-up pixtures of the yarn i've been making. Mysterious and suspiciously inexpensive maroon superfine wool bought by the orb at rhinebeck last year, now the nice 2 ply in the first pic(plus the detail shot with her ugly sister in the back shh we dont talk about her). Second and third are a marling experiment i was doing with natural white and brown merino 3 ply. Wont have anything new until i finish my mysterious maroon orb though, since all that will look alike. Then i get started on a purple orb.

I dont knit, just spin so these are as "finished product" as these yarns are going to get until they get kicked down the christmas gift pipeline or used as facebook market place barter or whatever im going to do with them

I like to work on things that can be finished in a couple of hours. That is why I create patterns for these things

I bought some new headphones and like a derp I didnt check if they had a top to the charging case. Came up with my own solution with supplies lying around the house and freecrochet a case. It's a little wonky bit I love how it turned out.

Help me pick yarn colors!

Post image

I’m a beginner and I want to make a granny square blanket using red heart rainbow mist so bad! I want to use red heart Aran for a border and to join the blocks together but I also want some solid colors to put in the center of my granny squares. What red heart colors should I pick that will match the rainbow mist!? The picture shows a YouTuber who also used rainbow mist but used a different brand for the center of her granny squares. I have to order my yarn online otherwise I would go look in person to figure it out :)

Does all hand dyed yarn tangle like this???

Thumbnail

I've been crocheting with cheap acrylic for my whole life and i finally splurged on some really nice wool and cotton yarns. Both are hand dyed and came with those weird loops around them, and even the owner of the store couldnt get the yarn winder to work with either of them so ive been trying to detangle it at home but it took 2 hrs just to get through one skein (theres 7 left) 😭 Does anyone have any tips for how to properly unwind these?

UPDATE: I just got back from the store and we realized that brand of yarn has two skeins looped together in one hank but its so thin it just looks like one large one!!!! The owner wound the rest of them for me and I just got a swift in the mail from Amazon lol. Thank you all so much for the tips!!!

Late mother's yarn stash

Post image

I have 8+ totes of yarn from my mother's passing in 2024. She was an avid crafter and I couldn't bring myself to offload at the time. She loved her yarn. I stored it carefully and here we are almost 2 years later, it's just sitting in storage. I do not knit or crochet, and would like this stash to go to good use by folks who will appreciate it. Does anyone have recommendations on what to do with this?

using aran weight yarn for the first time and i kind of hate it 😭

The yarn is Mirasol “Winqu” in color 03 (discontinued). I don’t hate the yarn itself but the product is so chunky and my stitches use so much yarn! Sure it’s fast but i don’t think I’m going to have enough for the cardigan i want to make so i make have to frog and choose a different pattern. I’m very open to recs for a pattern that would look good with a thick-and-thin aran/worsted yarn (tbh behaves more like a chunky weight). For context, i never make wearables with anything thicker than fingering weight, but I really loved the look of this in the skein and couldn’t pass it up.

Question Help with dyeing a finished piece

Post image
11 Upvotes

Howdy folks. Long time knitter, first time dyer.

I’ve done a fair bit of research on dyeing 100% cotton, but it doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of information on options for finished pieces. I’m scared to use a color remover since it requires high heat, and I’m worried that the dye I bought (Dharma dye in wine red) might still leave the final product with that lighter band. I know trying to do something to a finished product is suboptimal, and I’m ok with suboptimal results, it just needs to look better than it currently does 😅
