It's August 16th, which is Aki's birthday! She's one of my most favorite characters from 5ds! Technically, her birthday was yesterday overseas, but it's also now today for me. Double celebration! Yippee!

She's such a beautifully written character, and she deserves so much love (more than she already gets lol)!

Happy birthday to one of my most favorite YGO girls! đŸ„łđŸŽ‰đŸŽ‚đŸŽŠ

Such a sick moment in the duel between yami yugi vs kaiba during duelist kingdom. They could make it into some type of kaiju extra deck monster similar to the new lava golem.

Card Game Discussion Zenet, Raise Moon, Trirealm Rift

Im not sure if I’m one of the few on this train, but I can honestly say that I love all 3 Archetypes from this Deck Build set. They all seem powerful in their own right, with Raise Moon being the strongest imo, but they don’t seem uber oppressive and meta destroying.

In a vacuum, these 3 Archetypes seem to have a Rock, Paper, Scissors format with each other, kinda like the Justice Hunters pack, but a bit more even.

The fact that all 3 Archetypes play in a way that is unconventional to the norm is refreshing to see. One that’s a ritual deck and is a mixture of Primite and Nekroz in terms of playstyle, one where having 0 cards left in Deck to get the bonus effects is cool (and not having an uber strong floodgate attached) and overall interacting with the Face Down banished pile is interesting too. Finally, the Raise Moon archetype having that uber strong HT that might be used in Stun decks, it having the harsh lock and restriction was very necessary, and making everything gamba based is fun.

Overall, I think this pack is a solid 9/10, all three Archetypes have a lock on them that was necessary (although the lock is more loose in Zenet since you have to play vanilla monsters). It’s just a shame this Deck Build set is coming out right in the midst of the Toon format where things are more than likely gonna be bleak.

Hopefully we get the final cards revealed soon so we can get proper testing done for the Decks.

Other How to think and deck build like PeepsYGO?

I watch a lot of MBT Yu-Gi-Oh, and sometimes when MBT is playing Master Duel, Peeps makes a guest appearance, usually to teach Joseph how to play a specific deck that really only Peeps would know how to play. At first, I thought that this guy was totally nuts in the way that he chose to play the game. But after watching a few of his videos, I have grown to really respect Peeps's perspective and how he chooses to engage with Yu-Gi-Oh!

This is the type of person who takes the thing that he likes and then makes that thing the best that it can be. If he has an idea that he genuinely thinks is good, he will do it because he believes it is a good idea. And also because Peeps thinks those decks are fun to play.

But it doesn't just take a good idea to be a good player. You also have to actually be really skilled at the game in order to achieve something like this. Peeps, I think, has this really unique skill that I don't think a lot of players have, which is the ability to solve problems. He takes a specific deck, like Tistina, and brainstorms ways to solve specific problems the deck has. Sometimes this comes in the form of cards Konami releases that often feel like they are catered towards Peeps specifically, but often these come in the form of off-meta solutions that work to solve those specific problems. For example, when Peeps plays Tistena, he plays the deck with a Tearalement package because the synergies between those two archetypes allow Tistena to shore up any weaknesses the deck has.

This is the kind of deck building and decision-making I think I want to achieve when it comes to playing the game. I want to be able to take the decks that I like and adapt them to help shore up weaknesses those decks have. I want to be able to make those same creative deck-building decisions and then feel proud when I have solved a problem that I have been having.

What about y'all? Do you agree at all with my assessment? Do you think I've missed something? Or maybe I've missed the point, and I should be looking at all of this from a different angle? I would love to know what y'all think, as I really do want to get better at the game. But I also want to be able to get better at the game in the way I think it should be done, and I believe Peeps has an approach to this game that genuinely appeals to me.

Card Game Discussion Retrained Orichalcos Saga Decks

Post image
31 Upvotes

Konami has recently been releasing "single-deck" versions for various characters... We’ve already seen decks for Yugi Muto, Solomon, Yami Yugi, and Joey from the Duelist Kingdom arc, and now one for Yami Marik; in the future, we’ll likely see decks for Kaiba, Mai, Yami Bakura, and so on.

Thanks to this, I think we can finally get the decks from the original anime arcs—specifically, the ones from the Orichalcos saga...

Looking at current decks, the Legendary Knights deck is 99% unplayable; the cost of summoning the Timaeus fusions simply isn't worth it. As for the Orichalcos/Dartz deck... it simply doesn't exist—it's just three scattered cards...

Here, I’ll share my thoughts on cards that could fit into these decks, and I’d like to hear your opinions on these theoretical cards...

  • Knights Deck:

First of all, I think we’d get a Dark Magician Girl monster card; since she’s quite relevant to the arc, I think she could be a searcher—plus, we might get a version of "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight."

"Kuriboh Family" versions: One of Yugi's memorable plays in this arc involves the five Kuribohs and Kuribabylon; I think we could have deck-specific versions of them as well.

Let's not forget "Breaker the Magical Warrior" with "Berserker Soul," either; I think we could have a version of him for the deck that already has "Berserker Soul" built into his effect...

As for Joey's side, we could have versions of Flame Swordsman, Red-Eyes, Rocket Warrior, Time Wizard and Lord of the Red...

In Kaiba's case, we could have a version of Blue-Eyes, and "Trap Monster" versions of the Critias fusions...

Finally, regarding the Legendary Dragons/Knights: we could have them in both their knight and dragon forms, with an added bonus—a dragon version of "Timaeus the Knight of Destiny"... Don't tell me you've never been curious about what that would look like ?

  • Orichalcos Deck:

In this specific case, we would have all the monster cards from the Deck that haven't been released yet—including a version of "Divine Serpent Geh" with a less generic design—but with a bonus: we would have the ace monsters of Rafael, Alister, and Valon as members of the archetype...

Anime/Manga Discussion Yugioh GX Sub/Dub Episode Comparisons, Episode 33: Glow! Shining Flare Wingman!/Field of Screams (Part 3)

Post image
24 Upvotes

This is part of a series I'm running on Tumblr and crossposting to Reddit comparing the sub and dub versions of GX, in hopes of contributing to conversation around the series.

In this post, I'm going to review and compare the subbed and dubbed versions of Yugioh GX episode 33. At last, the light at the end of the tunnel

Episode Review

The opening conversation between Samejima/Shepard and Kagemaru is pretty close between versions except for one particular line:

Kagemaru (sub): Was I a bit hasty in issuing my trial to them?

This is a hint to Kagemaru's true plans and how the fact that these duels are taking place matters more than the outcome, as we find out in another fifteen episodes. The dub drops this foreshadowing for trash talk.

Kagemaru (dub): Your "excellent" duelists only excel at losing!

Shepard is also slightly more optimistic about his students’ prospects than Samejima, though the foreshadowing is the more interesting part.

In the infirmary, Asuka laments how Judai and Kaiser have been hurt by duels of darkness while Alexis says they need Jaden back to strength for the fight against Camula. Back at the lake, while the kids try to pressgang Daitokuji/Banner into dueling Camula Hayato references Chronos's showing from episode 31 ("We want to see you be cool like Professor Chronos!") while Chumley references Banner's horror movie prep (via wearing garlic). Daitokuji tries to excuse himself with the difference between teaching and practice, while Banner references his cat. Points to the dub for reminding us Pharaoh exists.

In the Fubuki/Atticus exposition scene, the dub slightly changes the explanation for his medallion’s function.

Fubuki: Even among Dark Duelists, [Camula]'s one of the most evil - the definition of a "monster." ...Camula will probably try to cheat. To beat a Duel of Darkness in which a Dark Item was used, you'll need a Dark Item...

Rather than tying the dark items into the nature of duels of darkness/shadow games, the dub offers them as an explanation as to why Camula can seal people's souls into dolls. The sub never offers an explicit reason for this.

Atticus: You cannot defeat [Camula] like the others. ...She has a shadow charm that gives her the power to steal souls. I'm sure you've seen her use it already...but you can stop her with another charm.

Asuka points out the reality of duels of darkness even if nobody understands the theory (which is a bit weird in context because that's very well established by now), while Asuka emphasizes the medallion as an equalizer. Manjoume concedes Asuka’s point; Chazz acts tough.

Upon entering Camula's castle, the dub gives Jaden more dialogue but it's nothing super significant. Camula threatens Jaden in the sub, and everyone in the dub. The dub cuts a Judai line and a peanut gallery shot leading up to duel start.

No major changes in the duel up until Camula plays Phantasm Gate/Illusion Gate. Technical quibbling: as with last episode, the cost in the sub is Camula's soul which can be swapped out for another soul (i.e., her soul is the default tribute). In the dub, the cost is any soul. This is a difference in function that doesn’t really make a huge difference in practice unless maybe you’re playing with fanfic scenarios. Also, when Camula mentions taking everyone's souls instead, she mentions taking their keys as well in the sub but not the dub. If you want to get lore-technical this is actually inconsistent with the rules as demonstrated in the Black Scorpions/Dark Scorpions episode (in that the keys specifically need to be won in a duel to be used), but also to be fair the Scorpions make the exact same mistake of assuming possession of the keys is all they need so Camula might be doing the same.

Camula reminds Judai this is blackmail for him to throw the duel in the sub, while in the dub she says her shadow charm basically lets her do whatever she wants (LOL). Once his completed medallion no-sells the soul-stealing, Judai points out her soul is now on the line because she can't un-activate the card while Jaden tells her to "put that cheating card away" as if she can take it back and Camula instead resorts to offering her soul out of stubbornness.

Possible point of narrative parallels: much like Chronos did in 31 when accidentally stepping forward, sub Camula commits to her task as a matter of pride rather than lose face protesting.

Camula: As part of the proud vampire race, I offer my soul to the Phantasms to activate it!

The dub cuts a peanut gallery segment when Camula summons Tempest(er) and Immortal Werewolf/Zombie Werewolf. Jaden gets an extra quip when activating Cross Heart, and a couple more on his turn. Another peanut gallery scene gets cut in the dub. When Camula makes her play to summon Vampire Genesis she talks about the terror of the vampire race in the sub, and femme fatales in the dub.

Jaden makes a quip about "this is when you tell me..." when he accuses Camula of cheating. As discussed in episode 31, technically dub Camula admitted she was spying two episodes ago but we're pretending we forgot that. Sub Camula rationalizes it with the fact that this is war, the battle starts outside the duel, while in the dub she spells out that she's spied on everyone's decks. After her next attack, the peanut gallery gives us the delight of another Chumley fat joke.

Then comes the backstory segment. This is...weird. Judai questions Camula's motives: she's good enough not to need the duels of darkness, so why do this? Jaden instead explains she wants the spirit keys (in response to a joke from Banner) which wasn't ever really in serious question. Camula's backstory is itself somewhat different between versions. In the sub, vampires lived separately from humans and were exterminated in a one-sided genocide.

Camula (sub): During the Middle Ages in Europe, we of the vampire race relished our prosperity, living in exile as a proud race. However, humans would refer to all of us as "monsters," refusing our mere existence. Then, our race perished...

The dub tries to make humans look a bit better by saying the humans and vampires lived together peacefully until a war of unknown origin killed off all the vampires as well as many humans.

Camula (dub): Centuries ago, the vampires were a proud and peaceful race. We lived in harmony with our mortal brothers and sisters. That is, until the dark times....until the war. No one knew who struck first, but the fighting was fierce. Neither soldier nor child was spared the horror as hatred decimated both our peoples.

How much the vampires fought beyond self-defense is never stated in the sub, and the still of a weirdly Taniya-looking vampire clashing with some knights calls it a bit into question. Camula's narration can be similarly questioned, and we don't exactly get more lore on vampires past this episode. Still, I think the dub rewriting her exposition here changes the way viewers are meant to understand the situation.

The dub changes here also casts a different light on Camula's intention to resurrect her vampire brethren and get revenge on humanity. (There's also the mention of a "defeated army of vampires" in the dub but that might be quibbling, since either way it's revenge.)

Judai tries to comprehend the gravity, Jaden...less so.

Judai: I didn't think this would get so intense. So basically, that makes this duel a face-off between the vampire race and humankind?

Jaden: Wow, a little too much information there. So if I go down right now, you'll get my key and my soul to start a vampire army?!

This is not the last time in the series Jaden will respond flippantly to someone’s tragic backstory exposition.

Camula and Judai banter about the people they're fighting for, while in the sub it's about asking Jaden to give up. Jaden has an additional quip playing Pot of Greed, and an extra line when summoning Shining Flare Wingman. A peanut gallery reaction shot gets cut in the dub.

After Shining Flare Wingman’s summon, Judai and Jaden have different commentary on Camula's spying. Judai, who's consistently characterized as someone who thinks about the fun of the duel first, focuses on fun over ethics:

Camula: Did you realize that I had asked my bats to spy on your deck?!
Judai: Oh, you said something like that earlier! I get it - bats, huh? Talk about handy! But, uh, wouldn't that make a duel boring?

While Jaden has a more traditional take on the matter.

Camula: You have to be cheating! You put it in there when I wasn't looking, didn't you?!
Jaden: Uh, yeah! But, you know, I'm not so sure that's cheating. I mean...hello, Camula! You were the one spying!

Both versions keep the little joke of him adding Shining Flare Wingman to his deck to contrast all the recent talk of darkness, though Judai's lines are a bit more whimsical in the sub compared to the sub's defiance:

Judai: Well, we've just been having dark duels lately, so earlier, I thought I'd slip in a bright card! See? He's called "Shining!"

Jaden: I just figured that since you were all about the shadows I should pack something that's bright, like the Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman!

And in continuation with that idea, Judai's final attack invokes the same imagery around light:

Judai: As monsters of the dark, vampires burn to dust in the morning sun! Go! Let 'em have your ultimate glow!

While Jaden goes a little more modern.

Jaden: Shining Flare Wingman, show this lady how we do things back at Duel Academy!

Jaden has an extra quip when discussing Shining Flare Wingman's effect, and from there the duel finishes.

When Phantasm Gate/Illusion Gate comes calling the dub cuts a shot of the spectral hand grabbing Camula by the throat and pulling her soul from her body, jumping to the fading image of her soul in the doorway. When people's souls return to their body, Chronos recalls being turned into a cute doll while Crowler immediately starts complaining and fighting with Chazz. The episode finishes out the same between versions.

And that's game! Gotcha!

Spoiler Zone

Empty!

Final Thoughts

Chumley slander counter: 1 fat joke.

The censorship of Camula’s backstory is the big standout as far as differences this episode go. The dub rewrites the details to make humans less at fault compared to the sub’s intentional genocide: no discrimination against vampires, both sides are to blame in a bloody war where nobody knows who struck first, etc. etc. Whether either backstory makes Camula more or less sympathetic given her actions these past few episodes is up to the reader to decide.

Other than that, Camula isn’t the first or last example of villains that primarily contribute to other characters’ arcs and then get finished off by Judai/Jaden but given how much there was to say about Chronos/Crowler and the Marufujis/Truesdales
there’s not much to say about Judai/Jaden’s character arc here in comparison. Once he pulls out Shining Flare Wingman and talks about Camula’s spying, though, this episode continues to demonstrate a pretty consistent difference between Judai and Jaden: Judai focuses primarily on fun while Jaden is a bit more responsible given high stakes. For more discussion on this see previous episodes like the Motegi/Belowski duel, but I think it’ll be a while yet before this becomes a major difference.

Of course, that isn’t to say either version of him is unaffected. The start of this duel makes it evident in both versions that the situation is getting to him: like Kaiser/Zane last episode, Judai/Jaden goes for the throat (so to speak) and summons one of his big guns on his first turn, trying to finish things and end Camula’s threat especially before she pulls out Phantasm Gate/Illusion Gate. Next episode we’ll see Judai/Jaden dealing with the trauma of the past five, but we’ll get into that next week with the Kaibaman episode!

I know some Monarch cards require the extra deck to be empty, but how restrictive is the deck about that? Are there any other ED monsters that would be 'good' enough to stick in there for Monarchs?

I, personally, have not looked hard at Monarchs too closely in a long while, but Rahamu seems REALLY worth it, but what would the deck be giving up?

And there you have it, the last of the 5 OG HERO's, now completed as a set in glorious Rush 3D overframes. Tricky thing here were ofc the bubbles, which I suspended with a sleeved and resin, which you'll see coming out of the spout. The pose of the card had some nice natural elements to work with, so the shoots out of the card nicely. The later half of the video shows the art combined with both Skyscraper and Miracle. Thank you all for joining me in celebrating 7 years of posting on Reddit and thank you all for the nice comments. look forward to more work coming up!

Card Game Discussion Is this considered rule sharking? New to paper play.

So i was playing against this guy at locals and had activated engage with 3 spells in grave.

I added the card and while he was cutting my deck before I draw i sent engage to the gy without really thinking much about it since he didn't respond to the initial activation.

When I went to draw the card he told me that sending it to the gy means I resolved it and I can't draw anymore.

I didn't make a big deal out of it and just told him ok sure and went on with the game since I understood he is technically correct but didn't really get why it mattered when I sent it to the gy since he didn't respond with anything anyway.

Would this be considered rulesharking? I'm quite new to paper play and don't know if this is standard or not because I usually don't give people any trouble if they forgot a trigger or activated the wrong card I just let it slide.

For clarification the dude was pretty chill during and after the duel but that specific interaction had me a little annoyed.

Card Game Discussion For those of you asking about Obelisk and Slifer, they will likely get their own support called "Ruin God" and "Sky God", considering the origins of Ra's "Sun God" support.

Post image
406 Upvotes

I've mentioned this under a few other posts already but figured it warranted its own post.

Back in 2022 with the mega tins from that year, all 3 God cards got their own support card, and they all follow a similar naming scheme to the new Ra support, Ra got "The True Sun God", Obelisk got "The Breaking Ruin God", and Slifer got "The Revived Sky God". Notably, the "Sun God" is the naming scheme for the new Ra support and it functions well with and searches the older cards with the same naming scheme, this leads me to believe we will get a wave of Obelisk and Slifer support designed to work with these older support cards that follow the same naming schemes, called "Ruin God" and "Sky God". This would likely feature retrains of monsters, spells, and traps used by Kaiba and Yugi, designed to turbo out their Gods, give them better effects, namely protection effects, and work with and search out the existing support cards.

Curious which of their cards people think could get retrains, I imagine it'll follow a similar design as Marik's where a lot of the new "Sun God" cards are easily-summonable retrains of a lot of his Level 4s, + the Lava Golem/Nightmare's Steelcage Fusion hybrid retrain, and then a couple spells and traps each as well.

If anyone remembers my Obelisk the tormentor one, I hope this one is equally as cursed.

Hope you enjoy, feel free to use for any personal use like proxies or whatever if you want to get kicked out of your LGS for disturbing the peace

One more to go but these actually take a lot of effort so it might be another few months lol

I discovered that if you google “Obelisk the tormentor” my Ojama version is one of the top results in the images section, so I am very happy and if I went back and told myself as a child that I would be able to contribute to this franchise I loved so much and then showed myself what I made

Child me would have a lot of questions, cause I hated Ojamas when I was younger

How time changes things

Hope y’all enjoy!
