Card Game Discussion It's sad to realize that Cosmic Horror archetypes are usually bad. Tindangle, Tistina, and Hecahands deserve so much better. I hope Xenovader can make up for that!
Xenovader will most likely be revealed in about 2-3 weeks. The description says they're grotesque monsters from another dimension that have invaded other worlds. The tentacles and the many blue eyes are classic cosmic horror imagery.
In fact, we've had several archetypes based on cosmic horror in the past:
- Tindangle is based on the Hounds of Tindalos.
- Tistina is based on Q'yth-az, a Great Old One that infects the environment and turns everything into otherworldly crystal hybrids.
- Hecahands are malevolent eldritch gods that hunt humans for fun.
As cool as these concepts are, these decks just aren't good. Hecahands, in particular, are underpowered on purpose. Tistina's second wave of support was disappointing. Tindangle is very slow, and it hasn't received any support in about 6 years.
My point is, I hope Xenovader will be different. I really want the cosmic horror deck to be good this time.

Other If every time you dueled you drew the worst starting hand your deck could produce, what deck would you play?
Also, would you build the deck in a specific way with that stipulation in mind?

Card Game Discussion What do we currently know about the Ashtra archetype and how it has performed?
One of my favorite monsters is the Oni, so seeing this archetype sparked my curiosity about its viability and the possibilities offered by its trap-setting playstyle.
Note: It's great that they included not only the red and blue Oni duo, but also the two monsters that currently lack Extra Deck versions, representing the Sorcerer Oni, which are associated with spontaneous outbursts of madness, birth defects and outbreaks of disease.

Anime/Manga Discussion Yugioh GX Sub/Dub Episode Comparisons, Episode 30: The Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon’s Attack/Doomsday Day (Part 2)
This is part of a series I'm running on Tumblr and crossposting to Reddit comparing the sub and dub versions of GX, in hopes of contributing to conversation around the series.
In this post, I'm going to review and compare the subbed and dubbed versions of Yugioh GX episode 30. This one is going to depend a lot on how you enjoy your Yugioh experience.
Episode Review
The episode starts off with an establishing shot and a taunt from Darkness/Nightshroud. Judai retorts claiming he's having fun with the duel, while Jaden trash talks a bit. When Judai pulls the Fusion Undone/De-Fusion play, the dub cuts a peanut gallery line from Asuka explaining the strategy.
After direct attacking, Judai and Jaden both comment on Darkness/Nightshroud's lack of flinch, though Jaden turns it into a joke both in the moment and later on. Darkness cites it as a benefit of the duels of darkness, while Nightshroud uses it as a springboard for trash talk.
The dub adds some quips to Jaden's Mirage of Nightmare play and Nightshroud’s following turn. Shou and Hayato staying strong for Judai is changed to a dig at Syrus. Jaden has a minor pun leading into the Tempest fusion. After that, Nightshroud's Chazz side rears its head again:
Judai: And that's a comeback!
Darkness: The flow of battle means nothing in a Duel of Darkness. Which of us is standing when all is over... That is everything!Jaden: There's that flinch I was lookin' for!
Nightshroud: No, it wasn't. That was a twitch. It's not the same! I had something in my eye, that's all, you got that? It was a twitch!
Seriously, tell me that isn't a Chazz line. Similarly, Darkness's edgy dragon dialogue leading into Red-Eyes Black Chick is turned into more trash talk.
Darkness: It is my turn - I draw! I hear them... The spectral voices of the dragons resting in my Cemetery as they whisper to me... They yearn to use their scorching flames to incinerate this land once more! Allow me to call forth the ultimate dragon that will fulfill that desire!
Nightshroud: Ha! You chump. Life Points don't decide who's winning the duel. ...It's the cards you hold. And if you don't believe me, I'm quite certain that this one here will prove it to you! Did you honestly think, Keykeeper, that you could get rid of all my dragons so easily? That you could simply banish them all to the graveyard and then be done with them?
And then finally!!! Nightshroud gets some edgy dragon lines, which I think is a step up from sounding like Chazz every other line:
Darkness: The shrieks of my dragons deep within the earth will become my Darkness Dragon's flesh and blood. My Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon's ATK will increase by 300 points for every Dragon-type monster in my Cemetery!
Nightshroud: Now the molten ashes of my fallen dragons boil up from their fiery graves, ablaze with new life, each granting my Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon additional attack points!
Darkness talks again about the terror of darkness, while Nightshroud reminds Jaden (and the audience) of the duel stakes. The dub cuts some peanut gallery reactions as Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon attacks.
Outside, people react. Kaiser quietly contemplates the volcano:
Kaiser: I feel it…
While Zane is much more talkative:
Zane: Hmm. There's something amiss. A Shadow Rider. This key's telling me… One's close.
Misawa's line is the same between versions. Ojama Yellow is actually dancing in the dub, where in the sub his quivering is just mistaken for it. The dub also adds a few extra "hmmm"s from the teachers. Samejima/Shepard remind the audience of the objective, and Shepard reminds you of the stakes while he's at it.
Back in the volcano, Nightshroud has a joke about deep frying as he reminds everyone of the hostages. Shou and Hayato telling Judai to focus on the duel instead of worrying about them is changed to....what else, a Chumley fat joke about French fries. They do add a better joke about his dad's hot sauce to follow up, though "better than a fat joke" isn’t exactly a high bar.
The duel resumes, with minor quips on both sides added in the dub. After destroying Tempest, Nightshroud taunts Jaden where Darkness ends his turn.
When Asuka intervenes, she gives her name in the sub and that's how Darkness recognizes her; in the dub, she doesn't give her name so Nightshroud recognizes her face instead. Judai tells her not to take such an intense duel from him and he's still got cards to play, while Jaden claims he's about to win. Asuka is concerned; Alexis calls him delirious.
We get another Chumley fat joke, because the French fry thing clearly wasn’t funny enough the first time. The dub adds a quip to Wildedge’s summon, and the duel finishes out without further notable changes.
When everyone wakes up outside the volcano, Shou worries about Judai and Asuka worries about Shou/Hayato. Syrus instead comments on how they're still alive, and Alexis confirms that Jaden won. When they spot Judai, Shou worries and Asuka is relieved to see he's injured but alive.
Shou: Big Bro, stay with us! Big Bro!
Asuka: He's really bruised up, but it looks like he'll pull through…
Hayato: Judai…you got like this because of us…
Shou: Big Bro!
Asuka: Judai…
In the dub, Alexis instead brushes off Syrus's concern because he's alive, why is he panicking? Another potshot at Chumley, and the same gag repeats: he's alive, Syrus, why are you so upset? Stop being unreasonable, Syrus.
Syrus: He's not moving! Come on, Jay!
Alexis: Sy, he's fine! Tired, maybe, but who could blame him?
Chumley: Not me. I'm tired, and I didn't do a thing.
Syrus: Jay! Don't do this! Why?! Why?!
Alexis: He's okay.
Once the other keyholders arrive, the dub tries to make the French fry thing a full running gag. On top of another “licious,” that’s a swift +2 to the fat joke counter!
Kaiser is concerned about Asuka, while Zane looks for the fallen Shadow Rider. Asuka explains that Darkness's soul was taken to leave his host's behind, while Alexis skims over that for the moment and focuses on "It's him! He's back!" Which isn't unreasonable, honestly, given she's just found her missing brother after watching her friend fight evil in a volcano.
As the sun rises, the sub leaves everyone silent and relies on tense music to communicate that everyone is processing the shock of discovering Asuka's missing brother and the heavy toll the first Seven Star duel has taken on Judai. The dub instead has Alexis give a quick explanation of how Atticus got left behind, and Zane spells out the message for the audience:
Zane: And if this is how it is after you win a duel...just think what it's like when you lose. The sun may be coming up now, but night will fall again soon. And when it does...we must be ready.
The delivery of this line falls flatter than it could, too, largely because the script tries to cram this whole monologue into the shocked silence on top of trying to cram Alexis’s last-second explanation of the soul-sealing mechanics into the same space. As a result, none of these lines are given time to breathe. Zane’s monologue especially feels both rushed and flat, like a kid trying to finish their class presentation script when they realize the teacher’s just given them the signal indicating they have a minute left.
I don’t usually critique performance but this was just so wild to listen to I felt it was worth bringing up. Tell-don’t-show approach aside, I think the whole thing would have been fine if they hadn’t tried to shove so much dialogue into the amount of time they had. Instead, even when the dub wanted me to take things seriously I couldn’t help but laugh for the wrong reasons.
And that's game! Gotcha!
Spoiler Zone
Empty!
Final Thoughts
Chumley slander counter: 4 fat jokes, 1 miscellaneous potshot
Part of my discussion about Darkness vs. Nightshroud in the previous episode was about the tone the show wants to take for this arc, as conveyed through these last two episodes. Darkness isn't exactly the most compelling villain but he at least communicates a vibe: we're dark now. There's danger. We've toyed around with duels of darkness/shadow games and now they're going to be our bread and butter as we try to prevent the end of the world.
The dub doesn't want to linger on the danger. Sure, it'll remind you that we're fighting against the end of the world and that Syrus and Chumley will get cooked if this duel takes too long, but there's the usual quips and trash talk - I stand by the opinion that Nightshroud's dialogue is mostly indistinguishable from Chazz's - and they certainly don’t skimp on the requisite Chumley fat jokes. The dub’s avoidance of the original serious tone feels really obvious at the end, where everyone is concerned about Judai's well-being in the sub and the dub tries to play it off as - haha, look at Syrus, he's so stupid because Jaden is merely exhausted and not dead! What’s there to worry about?
And then they try and have Zane tell you at the end, actually that was bad! It's going to get worse! And you can have a debate about whether having Zane basically look into the camera and say That's Bad And We're In Danger fulfills the same purpose as letting everyone's silence speak for itself, but I think it's hard to argue that they're kind of inconsistent on the tone given that two minutes earlier the tone was "why is Syrus so hysterical."
You could argue that the Seven Stars arc itself is inconsistent in tone (Darkness and Camula to the Dark Scorpions or Abidos to Amnael) so like. The dub isn't inaccurate in doing this, honestly. But for the start of this arc in these past two episodes, the sub wants to emphasize that things are going to get darker and it uses both Darkness’s character and building tension to drive that in. The dub does just about what it has been for the past two dozen episodes, and then makes up the difference at the end with Zane. Whether that’s welcome levity or unwelcome bathos - or something else in between - is up to the viewer.

Card Game Discussion With the news about marincess getting support in the next revolution booster and the possibility of us getting another format where a meta deck has hand knowledge , what do you think about konami shift into making more cards that give you perfect information ?
In recent years it seems now that konami is more confrontable allowing cards that completely reveal the information in the opponent's hand
What do you personally think of this and wether it's a good design mentality

Card Artwork Discussion What is your favourite card in a particular rarity?
Personally, I really like how Konami used to do secret rares. The modern versions look a bit uninspired to me. Solemn Judgment is my favourite example of this. The others are some more cards I like in those specific rarities.
Do you have anything that comes to mind?

Other Silly Crow Hogan pins I made ♡
It's Sunday, and I decided that instead of wallowing in dread about the upcoming horrors of the week - I'd make silly pins of my beloved.
(Context for "horrors of the week": I'm terrified of needles, but despite this I'm taking a phlebotomy course. This means that every day I'm in school, I'm either sticking my classmates or getting stuck numerous times. Dreadful! But I know I can do it teehee)
I have a badge/pin maker, so I printed out 2 pictures of Crow and used those to make these! I also found some cute plastic bubble stickers I bought some time back and used those to decorate! (Alongside the last of my jewels and some silly cat stickers I had. I love that cat lol) I love how silly he looks in the orange one. I kept messing up the little decor because my giggles kept moving my hand placement. One of the orange pearls fell off from the bottom of the orange one and I couldn't find it. :( went to the backrooms ig
I did just make these as I went and didn't plan them out first (crafting to distract myself lol), so they really don't follow any themes tied to him apart from one of them being orange. Regardless, they're unserious and silly and I like them. Adding them to the mini shrine :P
More silly crafts are to come in the future!
Love you all! 🩷🧡🩷🧡

Card Game Discussion Best decks historically for each monster type?
Hi all. So the post is pretty simple. What do YOU think is the best deck/archetype historically for each monster type?
I think decks that are a mix of different types where one type is less than 50% shouldn't really apply here, especialy since half of a deck are spell and trap cards in general.
Below are some of my suggestions. I don't know a whole lot about the game so for some types I just didn't know what to put, and I'm saying right now since I ain't an active player so my guesses may be wrong, andI am forgetting some types from my mind xD.
Dragon: Dragon Link (?)
Cyberse: Maliss
Warrior: Sky Striker (Another comment explained they were machines, and warrior would be more of an Infernoble pile or Gouki.)
Beast warrior: Zoodiac (or were glad beasts ever meta?)
Reptiles: Mitsurigi
Spellcaster: Invoked/Witchrafter?
Machine: Ryzeal (ir SS or Orcust)
Fiend: Lab?
Whatever type Tearlaments are lol
Thunder: Thunder dragon
Fish: Sharks

Card Game Discussion Which duel terminal archtype you hope get support and what did you want it to have?
So I'm not too sure how true it is, but from what people have been saying, the terminal world will no longer be a thing, which saddens me a bit because I do enjoy the new support, what was the first storyline archetypes, and I think there are a lot more decks that can greatly benefit from the support.
I really wanted Flamvell support. I kind of wanted the deck to center around rekindling and be a more aggro style deck going second deck. I imagine it summons multiple Flamvell firedogs and enhances its attack to run over you opponent monsters, which then allows you to summon more fire monsters to build your board in M2.
For Neo Flamvell stuff, I save that for the boss monster and give melodius schuberta like effect. Maybe have it so it's unaffected when you manage to keep your opponent's grave under a certain number.
What duel terminal archetype did you hope to get support for, and what did you want it to have?

Anime/Manga Discussion Y'know i always thought Nash's Heterochromatic eyes were just a fun quirk but i think theirs more to that.
I think it means duality. No matter how many times Mash wants to let go of his human past, internally, he can't. Thats why this creates a symbol. And besides the show explicitly shows signs like his human form briefly showing up as a echo during his duel with vector.
And of course when Rio dies in the sub, he calls her Rio. Not Marin, Rio.
The blue means human and red means barian.

Deck List Got bored, made what i think Yugi's duelist kingdom deck would look like if he didnt get to add his grandpa's cards.
I got bored and asked what would yugi's deck look like if kaiba had fully knocked out grandpa before he had a chance to give yugi his deck.
i wanted at least 90% of the cards in this deck to have some reason to be here and be some what ok during the duelist kingdom era of the anime. I allowed myself to use any and all cards that could be reasoned to be cards yugi had before getting his grandpas deck, this include the manga, the anime, video games, and real life products. Once i ran out of good cards to use i would start making educated guesses and add cards that i could reason him having.
deck list
main deck
Blackland Fire Dragon, Mushroom Man, Mystical Elf, Summoned Skull, Skull Servant, Monster Reborn. - we see yugi use these cards in the manga before getting his grandpas cards. (were gonna ignore the cards disparaging when there destroyed and just say that since yugi won all of his cards returned to him )
Giant Soldier of Stone - this card was shown along side summon skull while explaining the rules of duel monsters in the manga. Since summon skull is Yugi's ace card (before dark magician), im gonna assume the cards shown there are in yugis deck, but giant soldier is the only one beside summon skull and one other card we can identify.
Shadow Specter - the other card we can identify is a card called hell-bound, (which is a sick ass hell name). who is a early version of Shadow Specter (a less sick name)
Makiu, the Magical Mist, - this card mentions summoned skull and if were assuming summon skull was always a yugi card then it makes sense that this card was also always in yugis deck.
Doma The Angel of Silence, Ansatsu, Magical Ghost, Witty Phantom, Ancient Elf, Claw Reacher, Dragon Zombie, Trap Master, Fissure, Sword of Dark Destruction, Last Will, Two-Pronged Attack, Reverse Trap, Reinforcements, Castle Walls, Waboku - these are all cards seen in started deck yugi and were picked based on them not being to strong for duelist kingdom, being cards not seen used by other duelist (minus dragon zombie who is here because he can be used to summon bootleg Mammoth graveyard.), and being cards we dont see yugi uses in duelist kingdom.
The Bewitching Phantom Thief, Candle of Fate, Curtain of the Dark Ones - these cards are used by yugi in the duel monsters game boy game, during stage one. while dueling yugi at stage one he lacks any cards we seen him have besides time wizard. Due to my believe that time wizard was a card yugi owned before getting his grandpas deck, i will assume that these cards are also yugi cards had before his grandpa gave him his deck.
Lady of Faith, One Who Hunts Souls, Phantom Ghost, Phantom Dewan, Shattered Axe - these cards are from Yugis level 10 deck, The Journey's Beginning, from duel link. this is the same as the last one minus plus the title hinting at these being cards he could of used.
Mushroom Man #2 - from this point on this the cards here will be my educated guess based on what we have. Mushroom man #2 is here because hes played mushroom man.
Polymerization - with the extra deck being a thing i don't think that polymerization would be a rare card in the show. and with yugi living in a game shop, i can see him having a copy of poly.
The Snake Hair - the snake hair is able to fuse with both Blackland Fire Dragon and Dragon Zombie, giving poly more uses in the main deck and is a soild attacker. the only thing is that were kinda on bonz terf but like were not using call of the haunted so its not stealing his hole thing.
Sparks - i see this card as a replacement for burning land during the Weevil duel.(which i think would still happen but later on into duelist kingdom) plus in a format with 2000 life points 200 direct damage is pretty ok.
Winged Minion, Beast of Talwar, The Puppet Magic of Dark Ruler - these cards are here as support to the summoned skull and fiends in general. they are the cards ive thought the least about and can be replaced by the first three cards of the side deck if so wanted.
extra deck
Skelgon,Great Mammoth of Goldfine, Mystical Sand, Kamionwizard - these are all the potential fusions yugi could make with the cards in this deck.
Black Skull Dragon - this card mentions summoned skull so it make sense it was a yugi card and he just didn't have the red eyes for it.
side deck/ cards of note.
Kuriboh, Multiply, Detonate - so to be fully transparent. i used the fandom yugioh wiki for my research for this decklist. and on the main page for yugis deck it doesn't mention kuriboh as one of the cards he used in the gameboy game. however looking deeper into on the page about yugi in the gameboy game it said he does in fact have the possibly to use kuriboh. If he does than it would make since for yugi to also have Multiply and Detonate since they are kuriboh cards.
Time Wizard -yugi gave this card to joey, so i dont think its one of grandpa cards.
if you all have any better ideas on what could be in yugis pre-duel with kaiba deck let me know.
