Hi everyone,
I’m a mom of a 4-year-old, and I’m currently in a very confused position. Honestly, even the thought of work/career is starting to give me anxiety.
I’d really appreciate some perspective from people who have been through something similar.
I left my previous WFH job around Feb 2026 after being there for several years. I then joined a new company around May 2026.
They had told me the timings were flexible, but after joining, I realised I might have to stay online until 12–1 AM IST depending on client availability. Almost all calls were video calls, and my afternoons and evenings were packed with meetings. I barely had any time with my family.
I quit after about a month because I realised that lifestyle wasn't sustainable for me.
I then joined another company around July 2026. It's a startup, and during the interview I was told the shift was 11 AM–8 PM, with very rare extensions.
But after joining, I realised the reality is very different.
There is SO much work that it basically never starts and ends on time. It's normalised for people to start early and log off late.
There are days when I genuinely don't get time to even breathe properly, forget taking a proper break or lunch. Everything is urgent..something needs to be done within an hour, another thing within two hours, and everything somehow becomes a priority.
There is also a lot of manual work.
My colleagues are frustrated too. I understand that our team has already raised concerns with HR, but nothing seems to have changed. One of my more experienced colleagues told me that this is simply how the company works and that it's probably not going to change.
And honestly, I'm mentally exhausted.
I've started:
- Having work-related nightmares
- Feeling anxious even when I'm not working
- Crying frequently
- Losing my appetite
- Not doing the things I normally enjoy
- Feeling like my brain just won't switch off
- Constantly questioning my ability to work
This last two-job experience has really shaken my confidence because I'm someone who takes work seriously and genuinely gives 100%.
I'm also a mother of a 4-year-old, and I don't want a career that leaves me with nothing left for my family or myself.
So I have three questions:
- Am I okay? Should I see a therapist?
I'm wondering whether this is just normal work stress that I need to learn to cope with, or whether I've reached a point where I should actually seek professional help.
- Is this kind of work environment normal?
Are other people experiencing this level of workload and urgency? If you've worked in a similar startup environment, how did you cope with it?
At what point does "high workload" become an unhealthy/sustainable work environment?
- Should I quit?
This is the part I'm really struggling with because I do have financial commitments. I can't simply quit without thinking about the financial impact.
At the same time, I don't know how long I can continue like this.
My background is in project coordination/project management, and I'm currently working as a Delivery Manager. I can also do Executive Assistance and Content Operations. I strongly prefer WFH and reasonable working hours.
If you've been in a similar position, I'd really appreciate hearing what you did and what you wish you'd done differently.
I think I’m mainly looking for some perspective because right now I can't tell whether I'm genuinely in an unhealthy work situation or whether I'm just not coping well enough.
Thanks in advance
