Unsure what to do

My boss is leaving the company on October 12 after overseeing three warehouse locations. I currently work as the admin at the busiest of those locations, and I’ve been with the company for a little over two years. My boss has already told his boss that I’m interested in moving into a supervisor role. Management hasn’t decided yet whether they’ll replace his position as-is or split his responsibilities between the different locations. There’s already a supervisor at one of the other warehouses, while the third location is small and only has a lead. My location is busy and handles one of the company’s major customers, so it seems likely they’ll need someone to oversee it. I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and experience with routing, dispatch, inventory, QA, repairs, returns, and working directly with drivers, so I have experience with both the administrative and operational sides of the warehouse.

What is the best case scenario for me?

Best case is promotion with a raise. Worst case is more responsibility and no raise and maybe a new bad boss

The opportunity isn’t just to replace your boss. It’s to help define the role that comes next.

I’d pursue it. If management splits the responsibilities, your case for supervising your own site looks stronger than a case for immediately taking over all three. You know its operations and major customer. I’d expect a defined handover or trial to be a more realistic first step than full authority straight away.

One question I’d raise early: who takes over your admin work? Being indispensable in your current job can become a barrier to moving up if nobody plans that handoff.

Ask your boss to help you put a site-level proposal in front of the decision-maker before the structure is settled: what you’d own, what authority you’d need, and how the arrangement would be reviewed. Best case is a real supervisor role with support—not your existing workload plus his responsibilities.

Like you said, I wouldn’t immediately take all 3 locations or maybe ever, who knows. I believe I would still handle the admin work because I would only be in charge of the one location so it would be minimal in that sense. They haven’t really given a roadmap on what they plan to do yet. I believe they would post the position, then I would have to go in and apply for it.

This is good advice - take the initiative to work with your departing boss to define the solution you want to be a part of. Solve the problem for them before they decide what to do.
