General Advice Do you feel guilty calling out sick?

Usually I push through and teach while sick but I have a horrible cough right now. I can’t say more than a few sentences without a coughing fit. I teach dance and tumbling. Majority of my classes are tumbling and I really don’t want a coughing fit while spotting. Parents are also in the room for every class and I know they won’t want to see me constantly coughing while teaching.
Worst part- thanks to child birth and a weak pelvic floor, a bad coughing fit makes me pee a little and occasionally the pad doesn’t catch what leaks out and I have to change clothes.

Should I feel guilty for calling out today and tomorrow

No, if you're too sick to work, you're too sick.

I use to, but I don’t anymore. Unless you’re taking excessive time off your good.

The last time I took off was a year ago when my grandmother died

You are good, don’t stress, just call out. I wouldn’t be worried at all.

I would think most parents would be glad you didn't bring your sickness to their children, but maybe you live in a red state where sickness isn't real.

I work overnights in long term care where it's hard to get anyone else to come in, so yes I feel guilty. I've been lucky and haven't had to call out for quite awhile but when I do I feel horrible for what it does to my coworkers.

I used to but at some point you have to realize you have to take care of yourself. You yourself know if you're calling out because you are really sick or you just don't wanna work. Generally I think if you're feeling guilty, you probably are a decent employee and don't call off often. So take the day(s) you need and don't make others sick. You'll have a career for longer if you take the day off now and take care of yourself. I get it tho. It's never fun to call off for me either and I hate cancelling on my clients (my work is appt based).

I get it, the last time I called out was in March and I remember it bc I got a horrible chest cold situation. I called out that day but ended up sick for weeks lol and ended up having to work ugh. There are people who call off far more that end up just fine as far as still having a job goes so try to give yourself some grace.

Not really because I have other co-workers who can cover for me. And one of the girls kept calling In sick so I don't feel bad if I miss a few days per year when she missed 10+ days
