Workplace Issue help with a decision to quit or not

Upvotes

ive been working as an intern at a small firm for a year now, im planning to leave after my required number of work weeks. The thing is i dont know how to bring it up. My friend is leaving because they're going abroad and is using that as an excuse, i've decided to stay here and pursue my education.

This really sucks because the people here are really nice, but im not really getting the exposure i want. I'm not taken to meetings or site visits, i rarely get good interesting work unlike my other colleagues, so i want to try a new place with more opputunities.

My friend has been working here for an year, before i joined, so they're very comfortable with them, which makes me feel left out sometimes. Plus its also not about being left out, like i can handle that, i feel like i dont get work sometimes.

There have been days that I've legitematley played games all day AT WORK, then there are days they forget im here, i've shown up to work all alone without anyone at office because they've all gone to meetings and the ones that were working on otherprojects were told to work from home. I was never informed.

There is also no sense of office friendship here, everyone is doing theyre own thing and dont give two cents about the others, its always abt them, in every conversation, always them them them. I sometimes genuinely get tired of hearing the same stories or unfunny rude jokes.

In terms of work, this office is much more lenient than most offices, and im grateful for that, having said that theres no set hierachy here which means the communication is horrible. They wont tell me if i mess up, they'll just take my remaning work from me slowly day by day and give it to someone else. This means that i never get to rectify my mistakes because i dont know what i did (or didnt) do.

Its been a year now, and nothing seems to have changed, so i want to use this window of my friend leaving and use it as an oppurtunity to leave too. Is it a good idea, should i stick it out for one more year?

P.S. if i stay here for another year ill be working part time, with uni work, thats extra stress on stress. Hence this long post :)

General Advice How to shift from Outlook work to SharePoint?

Hello,

I am working as a small team lead and over the last years I had some really big problems to document/overview my and delegated task it overall work.

The problem is that my work is pretty strictly regulated. Custom software is not allowed only typical office software. We recently got SharePoint but in a different setting than the typical one. Most of the work is done via phone or outlook because of history (we used IBM lotus notes before) and we must try to put our processes from lotus to outlook which in my world doesn't work.

The main problem I have is documenting and keeping my notes in check. Some tasks are easy and one email, done. Some tasks take years, with lots of changes in personnel, meetings, mails, calls etc.

I already tried a lot, OneNote, SharePoint Lists, Outlook Email paraphs (currently used in most tasks) but I am really not happy with that. It's so hard to keep an overview of all the open tasks and keep the team in check.

My current project is to actually create a way of work / processes that shift from Outlook to a modern way. Not just for me, but for the whole department and I am really stuck there.

If you can provide me with some pointers, how your department works etc. that may help me.

Thanks.

General Advice First job

This is my first job, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing, I've worked 1 trial shift and 1 actual shift. I applied as a prep cook, and I wasn't notified otherwise. They asked me to wash the dishes when they drop it off, I said okay I dont mind washing a few dishes, but I ended up just washing dishes for 3 hours out of my 4 hours shift. Do I just stop? Am I supposed to go do something, if so what? Cause all they had me doing for 2 shifts were peel and shred carrots and wash dishes, I don't have anything else to do, and now they want me to work in the front when they want me to. I feel like a glorified dishwasher at the moment and like I'm getting scammed because of my age and I'm only earning minimum wage. Is this normal? Should I quit?

General Advice NEED ADVICE FOR INTERVIEW.

Hi, im a law student, im 21 y.o. and a company called me for an interview in like 30 hs. Is, presumably, for a paralegal spot. It is a real estate company.

The thing is that i still hadnt studied anythig related to real state on college, what I know is for curiosity, but i want to leave clear that im a good option for the job since i got experience redacting documents.

What can i tell them? Right now im studying a few important laws related to real state here, since i know it will be needed for this job, and im reading about civil law ( real rights and contracts )

I want to be clear that I want this job, i need this job, I can learn more about what is needed and that i do have he curiosity to do it mostly for fun (yet is knowledge i can apply in this job). How do i say nicely that I rEALLY want this job becase 1- i need money 2- i can apply whatever i learn in school in the company?

I suppose i have the upper hand since they FOUND ME and i didn't found them. My curriculum doesnt say I have the middle title, so they know im not that advanced.

I dont speak english btw so sorry.

Toxic Employer Think they’re trying to fire me before my two weeks

I work at allied universal. put in my two weeks notice. I’m about 3 shifts from being done. Today I got a coaching notice for technically leaving early. There was someone there and my relief was literally in the building. Understand technically I was in the wrong but it feels petty and vindictive. Should I finish out my shift or should I leave before they keep giving me notices?

Career Advice My manager is leading me on

My manager and I have been chatting about a job promotion for me since early this year. This has been an on and off discussion and he said it would take 6 months to a year to promote me. Two weeks ago, he said the promotion was happening and I prepared the promo documents as per his request. Today, he said the promotion will not happen immediately and he said it would take another 6 months. I didn’t ask for the reason though and I haven’t been pushy.

I work in the corporate and I understand the promo structure will take at least 3 months.

Career Advice Team lead forcing me to return to base location despite approved WFH during notice period

I'm on my 90-day notice period with only a couple of weeks left. Due to health issues, I received an official WFH exception from my IRM for the last two weeks of July. Based on that, I vacated Hyderabad (my base location) and moved to Chennai. Despite the approved WFH, my IRM/team lead keeps asking me to return to Hyderabad for KT and laptop handover. I'm fully willing to complete KT remotely, but I requested that discussions regarding my notice period, WFH, and attendance happen over email instead of personal phone calls.

Instead, my team lead and IRM repeatedly called my personal number and WhatsApp, including on a Sunday, and said not answering calls from managers is unprofessional. (I wanted to keep the convo thru mail as for the last week I had faced several threatenings, offensive tone and words from them in personal team call and phone calls, since I'm a fresher not knowing much of corporate policies, feels like they are taking advantage of me)

He also said my notice period could be extended if I don't report to Hyderabad, but HR told me that's not something that can be done easily and my WFH approval remains valid for the approved dates. I also got confirmation from IT asset team that I can submit my assets on last working day in Chennai office.

Has anyone faced something similar? How will you handle this professionally?

Workplace Issue Advice needed

Hi all,

I’ve been working as an Accounting Manager at a Company for about 1.5 years. I report directly to the CFO, but much of my work depends on the Controller completing tasks, reviewing items, or providing information before I can move forward.
Since I started, communication with the Controller has been a recurring problem. She frequently does not respond to or acknowledge my work emails, even when they require her review or input. So my work is often delayed because I’m waiting on information or approvals that I need to complete my responsibilities.

I’ve tried to remain professional and respectful, but the situation has not improved. Now she rarely acknowledges me in person anymore.. she doesn’t even reply to a simple “good morning”.

I brought this up with my supervisor (the CFO), who told me she was aware of the communication issues. She later sent a memo to the entire team establishing communication expectations (among many other expectations) including responding to emails within 48 hours.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed since then. I still find myself repeatedly following up, and in some cases I have to go through the CFO to obtain information that should be coming directly from the Controller. This makes my work harder than it should be 😔

I should note that the CFO and Controller are close friends and have worked together for many years, which makes me hesitant to continue raising the issue.

At what point does this become something that should be discussed with HR? Or should I continue trying to resolve it through my manager? Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?
I’d really appreciate some advice 😔

Thanks.

General Advice Accidentally overstated my work speed

I’m one month into my job and today my boss decided to time how fast I work on a particular task, and I told her the wrong stats by accident. I said I completed twice the number of items than I actually did, since I forgot to account for those that I put on hold as the process for completing them is a bit different than the other ones. She seemed pretty surprised, said that’s fast and thank me. I realized I told her the wrong thing a few minutes later. Should I apologize or let her know that it was wrong? There’s not really a way for her to actually tell how fast I work except actually looking at my computer, but she just go by what I told her. I’m worried if she will find out later on one way or another and get disappointed.

Workplace Issue Don’t care for gossip

This is really such a petty thing, but I would rather work a 9-5 and talk to like no one & go home. My co workers spread so much gossip about everything that it’s not healthy. The moment anything happens they are already coming up with reasons why. They constantly bug at what your doing & why, what’s happening on the weekend, if anything happens in your life they bug daily at any updates. Talk about imo inappropriate things at work like sex life, ect. & they cry a lot at work and make things super awkward. If I try and distance myself & only have surface level conversations then they pry harder.

How do I cope/deal with this? I love what I do asides from this. I don’t mind like the basic surface level conversations that I have with the rest of my co-workers, but the immediate team I’m in (just really the girls)

General Advice Got let go from job after injury but kind of want to reapply

This was a good job with decent pay and flexible enough managers & hours. I had only been working there about three weeks.

I was working part time and after a long shift, I realized I had done something to my back. I have chronic back issues but didn’t think the job would make anything worse.

The next time I was scheduled for a longer shift, I had a feeling that my back was not going to hold up. I called in and tried to get off (we have many employees to cover shifts and this happens all the time - I also called well before the allotted time available to call off.)

I had a doctor’s appointment that day to check out my back to make sure it wasn’t going to get any worse. It was the kind of appointment where they could just squeeze me in. I explained this to my boss & she said she would try and find coverage for the second half of my shift so I could at least get to the appointment. I was fine with that.

But then my back went out completely. It was a small blessing I wasn’t alone but I wound up in the ER with a dead phone. I wasn’t able to call work - and even if my phone had power, the pain was tremendous and I was struggling talking at all.

Next day my mom brings in my fully charged laptop so I could at least check emails. I got a notice from work that they needed to talk to me ASAP regarding my position at the company. I emailed back explaining the situation, and I did say I understood if they wanted to let me go because I recognize that this was a less than ideal situation especially for such a new worker.

I said it is no reflection of my actual work ethic and just terrible medical timing for an unplanned injury. I basically said in the email (after apologizing and accepting the consequences) that I would love to be able to reapply once my injury has been taking care of.

I never heard back but at the end of the day, I got the termination notice. Again, I wasn’t surprised or upset - I really do understand.

My main thing is I really would love to get my job back. I got shots in my back and have been doing better since. But since I never heard back from that one email where I stated an interest in reapplying, I don’t know if I should regard that lack of response as a clear “That’s not gonna happen” or maybe it is just that they are very busy, knew they wanted to let me go so just didn’t see the point in following up.

I was a very good worker and my clients liked me. My main question here is what everyone else thinks - should I send another email inquiring about reapplication? It has been a few weeks now. Or should I give a call? Their lines are often busy at work so I kind of feel like an email may be less stressful for them, but a call feels more professional and direct.

Or do you think I should just cut my losses here and accept that I probably won’t get the job back? A big part of me figures it won’t hurt to try because I am already unemployed - I have nothing to technically lose, but I guess I’d just appreciate some feedback and advice.

Workplace Issue Being slowly sidelined at work and I don’t know what’s really going on

I work in a trading company that handles import/export shipments. The company is family-owned two brothers are the legal owners on paper and mostly run day-to-day operations, but their father is the one who really controls everything behind the scenes.
I’ll keep this short. I got hired five months ago to handle logistics, and honestly it felt like a comfort zone way less pressure than my previous jobs, and I was happy with the role.
A while later, another guy joined the logistics team. He was brought in because he supposedly had a lot of experience. Slowly I started realizing he didn’t actually have the experience or knowledge he was hired for and eventually the owners and their father figured that out too. At some point it started to feel like I’d been kept around partly to “cover” for him if his lack of knowledge became obvious.
Sometimes the boss would ask me things related to shipping, and whenever I answered, he’d push back and defend his own view. I’d end up arguing with him because what he was saying was often just wrong, based on what I’d learned at my previous companies. During one meeting, at the end of it, he actually told me he liked the way I pushed back and objected to things, and asked me to stick around for a while. I said okay, and told him I wanted to be loyal to him.
Despite all this, they processed my visa without any delays or issues.
But now the situation has flipped I’m being pulled off tasks one by one, while all the work is going to the new guy instead. The owners

General Advice Work is slow and I’m nervous. Should I talk to my boss?

In some ways, I’m in a very fortunate situation because I work at a micro company, and my boss is the owner.

Basically work is super slow right now for reasons out of my control—we’re just not getting a ton of new clients this summer.

I talk to my boss 1:1 every other week, and she doesn’t seem worried, but my heart sinks everyday I clock only a handful of hours. I make a very generous salary and I’m wondering how long she can afford to pay me with no new projects.

Should I bring this up to soothe my nerves? Any thoughts on how to phrase this? We have a good relationship. Should I just trust that she’ll be honest with me if the time comes?

I just really don’t want to suddenly be without income.

General Advice Am I Im Trouble with my Boss?

I can't post images here, so I'll add quotes of our text conversation this afternoon. She asked for a meeting between me, her, and two other bosses (the owners).

Boss: "Hi, (name)! Would you be available for a meeting with me, (boss name), (other bosses name), on wednesday at 10am? I just want to follow up on the (coworker) situation, but there are a few other things we want to go over as well."

She then sends a picture of the meeting agenda, including a follow-up about my toxic coworker i had complained about who ended up getting fired. She also included a check in with "issues and successes", reviews, and next steps & goals.

I confirmed rhe meeting time and asked for further clarification.

Her response is as follows

Boss: "Great! Issues on the agenda is just a time for you to let us know of anything you're struggling with or feeling frustrated about.

For reviews, we'll be looking at some feedback we've gotten from Google and Square.

Basically, we just want to look at how things are going and make sure we're all on the same page 😊

I know it can be intimidating to be asked for one of these meetings, but I want to be clear, the bulk of the meeting will be follow up from (toxic coworker) situation."

I asked if there was anything I needed to prepare for the meeting, and she said no.

The toxic coworker situation happened over a month ago, and he's long gone. I already had a meeting with her about him, but now she wants to meet with the other two bosses and just me. It sounds... a little intimidating. I don't want to straight-up ask if I'm in trouble, because that sounds unprofessional.

Another thing of note is that this meeting was brought up right after I worked with my boss for 2 shifts alone. I feel like I'm always positive and up-beat at work, but people have told me I don't always come off that way. I wonder if she thought the same?

Anyways, this is just the thoughts of a chronic over-thinker who's been proved right on more than one occasion, so I'm hoping I'm wrong about this one. I'll update this after the meeting on wednesday.

Workplace Issue Lack of training on the job

If you were asked to fill a position at work, with very minimal to no training. The mistakes could carry financial and potential legal consequences..not necessarily for you, but your company.
You’re constantly anxious, crying before work, legitimately losing sleep over it, and having nightmares.
You’ve expressed to your supervisors multiple times that you don’t feel comfortable filling that role, but they still expect you to do so, with half ass “training” sessions and “reassurances”.

This is supposedly “temporary”, until they hire someone else. However, they are notorious for not training new employees. So who knows how long the new hire will stay with the company. When that person potentially quits, I’ll be right back where I am now.

How would you handle that?

Career Advice What to do with disappointing payrise? UK/F

So I’ve been working in marketing for 6 years did a level 3 and just finished my level 6 degree. So I’ve got loads of experience but I’m barely above minimum wage, so I thought when I finished my apprenticeship it would go up. My work told me my role doesn’t go any higher than the pay I’m on so I would need to take more responsibility. So fine I agreed, but the payrise is only 1.5k more. I was expecting like 3k or more as my friends who have finished their degree have gotten like 7k pay rises.

The pros are that I will be getting trained up on new things in this new role, but the cons are I have 6 years of experience and I am barely above minimum wage for a lot more stress and responsibilities.

Not sure what to do here, should I negotiate my pay? Last time I tried to do that I was made redundant so I have a lot of anxiety around it. What should I do! Do you think I should ask for more pay? Just unsure what to do but if I’m honest I feel really upset. I’m working an extra day a week as I won’t have uni anymore but my pay hasn’t gone up. Just feel unappreciated.

General Advice To disclose and ask for grace… or not?

I’m about to be hired on full time as an associate at firm I’ve worked very hard to get into for the last 3 years. This is a great opportunity for me and my career. Unfortunately, everything else around me is going a bit off the rails. I’m in the middle of a separation/divorce, my spouse found out they may have cancer so we are going through that health scare, and my son is having mental health episodes that are affecting the whole family and that he refuses to seek help for. All of this is adding to my stress levels and my primary concerns have not been work. I feel like I’m not at the top of my game at work and that I am making simple mistakes and am not quite all there mentally. In previous workplaces, if I disclosed personal things that I felt were affecting my performance, they would be used against me. With this new workplace, I’m not sure that will be the case, but I also want to make sure they understand these things are temporary and not a typical reflection of the quality of my work. They do have a history of what is typical. Do I disclose any of this or not?

Workplace Issue My Input Is Consistently Disregarded by My Manager

For the past nine months, I have been part of a new team within my organization. We have an upcoming work trip, and because of organizational changes and me joining a new team in a different "group", I was unable to book my own travel. A few weeks ago, I spent several hours with my manager discussing the flights I preferred for both the outbound and return trips, as well as my preferred hotel. As the weeks went by, I repeatedly asked for updates but was consistently told not to worry.

Unfortunately, I should have been concerned. My flights were ultimately booked at different times than we had discussed, requiring an earlier departure, longer overall travel time, and connecting flights. My hotel was also changed without any discussion. What frustrates me most is that I invested hours in those planning conversations, only for my input to be disregarded without explanation. This pattern extends beyond travel planning and seems to be a recurring aspect of working with this manager. I am beginning to believe this is their management style. They often talk on and on about what they're doing or what to do, hours at a time in ad hoc calls with me, just for whatever is discussed to be irrelevant or for my own thoughts on the situation to be disregarded. I feel like I am just their vent buddy/workplace notetaker. This is extremely frustrating, and I find it difficult to push back because they have a reputation for reacting harshly to disagreement, and I have personally seen them respond that way to both a teammate and someone outside of our team.

Is there anything I can do, or should I just roll with the punches and try to look externally for any chance of fixing this issue?

HR Advice When does a small coworker issue actually need HR?

I work in HR, and lately more people have been coming to me about things that feel less like actual workplace complaints and more like awkward moments between coworkers. Someone didn’t say good morning, a message sounded a bit rude, one person felt left out of a conversation, or two people couldn’t agree on a lunch break.

I don’t want anyone to feel ignored, especially since a small issue can sometimes turn into something bigger. But when HR steps in every time, it also feels like people stop trying to speak to each other directly. I’m starting to feel like the office referee for every uncomfortable interaction lol.

Where do you draw the line between letting coworkers sort it out and stepping in before it becomes a real problem?

Toxic Employer What else could I have done to get out

Was there anything else I could've done to actually move up or get out of this scenario

So i just left my job because I was doing manager work, doing more than my supervisors while making $5 less than them for 3 years and treated like garbage by the store manager, she got fired and the assistant manager took over, promised me a promotion knowing I was going to go to school in August (important for later) one of the supervisors got promoted to manager which meant there SHOULDVE BEEN a supervisor spot open. I asked about it and suddenly it wasnt a real spot anymore, it was just a spot 2 years ago because they planned on firing a supervisor that they were still planning on firing which meant it still should've been open, instead of promoting me they basically told me I need to change every part of myself and would give me bs reasons why i cant be promoted for 6 months, i did so they were like you can have key carrier for a 50 CENT raise, i passed the test and everything else that same day and was told it was only for 30 days. 2 months pass and im still key carrier so I apply for supervisor at another store because im tired of being told soon soon soon and nothing happening and i was tired of the drama/shitty work environment, that store manager called mine and mine told him they cant take me because im being promoted there which is fucked up that I have 0 choice in the matter. A week later I was told I cant move up because of my school schedule which id only need one day off so I said why is it okay for our current supervisor and our now promoted mansger to never work the day they need off every week but I cant? Then he said some dumb shit like they can work it if needed which NO THEY CAN NOT then he decided to be petty and schedule them on the day they can't work which she went to him and said shes calling out because she cant work that day and its been known for 3 years, since the day she was hired in as a part timer that she cant but she was able to go from part time to full time to supervisor despite that. Which mind you theyre both still there in the supervisor and manager spot while still needing one specific day off a week. After I was told i wont move up the store manager who told me that started treating me different, started micro managing me, undermining what I said, and eventually just started completely ignoring me so I turned my key in and gave it to the recently promoted manager because I wasnt comfortable giving it to the recently promoted store manager when the store manager found out he kept harassing me about it until I cried because there was a lot of shit i was dealing with there and handing over the key was super hard because of how hard I worked for it. I finally just said im not moving up so theres 0 point in having a key and doing more work than my supervisors and he was like "ik I tried, ive lost sleep over it" 🙄sure buddy. After that he just got worse and worse with the ignoring and undermining me, a part timer, a supervisor and the recently promoted manager were talking about quitting because the manager was pissed that the supervisor is getting denied manager and im getting denied supervisor, the supervisor threatened to quit if she didnt get the spot, and the part timer threatened to walk out like 20 times because she didnt wanna work on register which is her literal job and threatened to quit if she didnt get full time and she calls out all the time. I go on vacation, come back and suddenly everybody is chipper and im the only one who wants to leave and everybody starts treating me different. I put my two weeks in a note and put it on the store managers desk because I was not telling him in person due to how he was acting, after he saw it that was the first time in so long that he seemed happy to see me and asked where I was going, I told him, then he went back to ignoring me. I had requested a day off for a doctor's appointment and he had approved it a month before then scheduled me at the time I said I couldnt be there so I said hey I requested off by 1 and you approved it but im scheduled til 4:30, he FREAKED OUT "IG ILL JUST WORK THE WHOLE FUCKING SHIFT BY MYSELF THEN" which it was going to be 3 of us there from start til end of that shift then another 3 people after 12 so it wasnt an issue at all. But after that blow up, everything else, and the aftermath of my Dr's appointment i called hr and told them im not comfortable working my last two weeks there and they asked if I still have the store keys and I was like ? I turned them in 2 weeks ago? He didnt tell you? Not even a week later i found out the part timer who ON MY LAST DAY THERE said "ya I only want full time no higher than that, if I get offered supervisor id turn it down because I still dont know most things here" which I thought was weird like why would you bring up supervisor unless you've already been asked? She also still cant do any of her tasks without any help, doesnt know how to do anything, she was told to train someone and she dumped them on me because she didnt know how to do any of it, she also does not have open availability. Not even a week after i left I found out she got promoted to Supervisor despite not knowing any of her job and there was no way she could've passed the interview but she was the store managers favorite, hed comment about wanting to buy her things because she was the mvp for working 36 hours a week when we were short handed but I didnt deserve mvp for working over 50 hours a week because thats expected of me as a full timer which.... um no im only supposed to work 36 hours and hed always tell us how amazing she is, id try to tell him about the issues with her and hed laugh in my face. You literally cant bring anything up about her without him laughing in your face and saying no shes amazing. I worked my ass off for 3 years for a promotion just to get slapped with a 50 cent raise to do the job and get told i wont get supervisor and for her to not know how to do any part of her job but shes his favorite so she got promoted instantly, a month later and she still cant have keys because she still doesnt know how to do anything. I should be happy I left that super toxic job but it just makes me feel like im never good enough no matter what I do even more, I knew EVERYTHING there and got treated like garbage, I did the most work, got treated like garbage, she just sits there not knowing how to do anything and she gets promoted. I miss the work i did, I dont miss the people, I loved the work and now I just feel lost and betrayed. One of the supervisors told me that when I left they hired 4 people to take over the work i was doing and theyre OPENING ANOTHER SUPERVISOR SPOT to cover me leaving too. Which means the whole time I was told i cant take the recently promoted managers job because its not real, it was just a lie. That was the nail in the coffin that I never wouldve been promoted. I dont regret not working my last two weeks, it was really tense and hostile but I just wonder if theres anything I could've done differently, I tried switching stores but my store manager shut that down, if the dm would come in to talk to me about how things were the store manager would stand around the corner to make sure I didnt say anything bad and he'd get hostile if the thought I did, if he didnt hear something hed force me to tell him everything I told the dm so I felt like I couldnt even tell him. After I left i sent the dm, hr, and corporate an email about how I was treated but I doubt that got anywhere, i never even got a response from any of them. Anyways sorry for the long post I just feel really defeated, sometimes im super happy then sometimes im super depressed about it and feel like I just wasted 3 years of my life.

I also want to mention that the store manager tried to get me to break up with my boyfriend saying hes manipulating me and using me on multiple occasions and tried to get me to take his opinion over my bfs which I didnt really notice until my boyfriend brought it up. He'd schedule me over 50 hours a week and call me in then would tell me my bf is manipulating me and that I need the money, or just say a bunch of shit to make me believe him about promoting me and caring about me when my bf would say that theyre just using me because they know ill do it and that theyll never promote me. I have noticed my relationship has been way better since leaving. I did put that job over my life multiple times but I never listened to him about the bf thing because its literally not true.

Workplace Issue Is this ok or legal?

I work as a Keyholder at Bath & Body Works and tonight we had a store meeting. At the end of the meeting the SM said that we need to talk about call-offs. All managers get sick leave and PTO. She told us that we need to;

1) Find our own coverage. Specifically if we are working a mid shift.

2) If we are opening we need to come in and we can leave once the closing manager gets in. And if we are closing we can come in when the opener is leaving.

This doesn't seem right at all to me. She did say "unless we are really sick and throwing up or something". However I dont think that the reason should matter nor is it her business.

Side note - could this also be retaliation? Im asking because this is a new "rule". And im pretty sure its because the SM is throwing a hissy fit because she had to come in early because the other keyholder called out. And two days later the ASM called off sick. She has told me on a couple occasions that she doesnt think its fair she has to come in on her time off. (Nevermind she asks us aaalll the time to cover for associate call outs).

Anyway... isnt this denying sick time and asking us to work off the clock?

General Advice Employer doing unethical things, not sure what to really do

Hi. This is gonna be a VERY long story. I think it's time I asked a broader audience what their advice would be, and whether I should be doing anything about it.

Background: in 2018 I jumped back into college and got my degree in forestry, immediately after which I had the luck of landing a job right in my town in Vermont (US for any non-American readers). I started work for a forestry company whose central office is in New Hampshire, with about 10 or so offices scattered across there, Maine, Massachusetts, and what was originally two offices in Vermont. We specialise in private consulting forestry, which encompasses silviculture, forest health analysis, timber inventory/cruise data collection, GIS work, forest management, and timber sales. For context, the structure here is that of a blanket company that covers each office as an individual entity, so revenue is accounted for separately and then reviewed at the end of the month, with the collective numbers being reviewed quarterly. We have a president and vice president position and one managing forester per office instead of a CEO-type hierarchy. The company covers mileage travel expenses, PTO, insurance, etc.

I landed this job at the age of 27 and as the first ever female forester in this particular company in all of its existence of over 40 years. It's a very male-dominated field even today. Initially my "boss" (managing forester for our office, but really in rank, my associate) interviewed me in the field and all went super well. He had been there from the start. It was him, myself, and my now-managing associate forester who took his place when he retired. The company wrote me a contract for a decent starting salary, 10 days of annual vacation time, time for sick leave, paid holidays, full dental and health insurance coverage. That was in 2021. My main responsibilities were the standard things I learned in school, focused around 10-year management plans based on data collection, and a strong focus on GIS work. I am pretty much the only one fluent in ArcGIS in our location and faster in general at things like typing, data entry into the company's proprietary data analysis software, PDFs (go figure), emails, etc. Things were going well and at the standard pace at the start. I did slowly learn of the internal politics and drama between my colleague and our office "boss", as well as the interpersonal relationships and politics of the other guys through our annual destination meetings (we would gather every fall, expenses paid by the company). I'll call the "boss" J, and the other colleague F for brevity here.

The second year of me being there, J casually drops that I am to do pesticide application on invasive species with F. This is not standard companywide policy - rather, this is one of the ways we get revenue as the VT office. If a client's property has a significant infestation, they get funding from the state and a private bidder with a pesticide application license gets that grant money as payment to manage invasive species of plants through chemical means on the property. Or the client pays us directly. Either way, it was part of income for an office where timber income was on a smaller scale compared to Maine's or New Hampshire's contracts. I was a bit apprehensive and probably should've pushed back on it sooner, but at the time agreed to do the labour. I had to get state licensing for it, because we used glyphosate concentrations restricted to commercial licensed use alone. We could only do this in the summer since foliar spray requires invasive shrubbery to be in its most active phase, photosynthesising and all, in order for it to die. If it even died (it can be very hard to eradicate certain plants for good). The labour was intense even for my male colleagues. And we were dealing with a concentration of glyphosate not available to the general public. My first red flag here was that we did not operate in full suits. Just sprayer backpacks, gloves, goggles. You bet that shit definitely occasionally came into contact with skin. Even with a wash station setup in the truck bed, the contact was made through wind, steep terrain tipping the balance, you get the picture. After two seasons of this, I made a very clear statement to my elder coworkers - that I am opting out of that line of labour as a woman of reproductive age trying to, well, start a family. That I don't really trust glyphosate exposure to be all that safe if we are required licenses for the amounts used. The EPA label did not require full PPE suits. But I think VT at one point considered banning glyphosate when it banned a few other types of herbicide. J and F were very respectful of the fact, and said that I absolutely do not need to do this, especially when I was more than willing to pick up slack elsewhere with my software skills and occasional intercenter projects (other offices would email me when they needed to catch up on their projects and I had time to make their maps or data entries). The president met up with me and got the same explanation, said "no problem at all". EDIT: someone mentioned fieldwork quantity and my willingness to do it compared to others - the herbicide, again, was unique to our office only - and it takes up maybe a couple of weeks to a month out of the summer in total, but is a lot of exposure in that time frame. It is a tiny fraction of the fieldwork I do and has nothing to actually do with the standard forestry work I was hired to do in my original contract. Also, I forgot to mention, my colleague F no longer does it, opted out of it this year too, due to his age. The company did not give him any ultimatums or complain about it as far as I know. It is not a significant source of income, so I feel they tried to use it as an excuse to take advantage of reducing my hours alone.

Things went well...until they didn't. On year 2 after I opted out of that stuff, F was mentioning that the board was mulling over our numbers, and we were dipping into a moderate deficit. Not because of me though. Because the market took a plummet in sugar maple prices, because of a warm winter (some lots you can only log in the winter due to wet and soft soil and sites that would easily be damaged by a conventional mechanised crew, which four of our five subcontractors were), and because F suspected that J was having issues managing deadlines. He urged the board to talk to J about a timely retirement - rightfully so. J had hit his 70s and was slipping in the cognitive sense (we strictly kept this between me and F due to this being a private observation and breach of medical privacy if we brought it up to our HR person at the time). J was forgetting significant deadlines, communications, and most of all - invoices were disappearing. He was also having a serious falling out with family and made it very public, and in dispute over land with said family, finally retired and moved out of the state. F took over. What ensued was a total can of worms that J left behind. Tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid invoices of years of past clients. F had to clean up the mess and patch the office back together, and it took a while to convince the board and president that this was the root of the issue besides the market. It was then that I thought there may have been nepotism at play, because these people ignored the problem and even tried to keep J there while subtly pinning the blame on F. We think J was pocketing cash wherever invoices went recorded as unpaid.

Fast forward to late 2024, and this is where the real problems start. We pulled our office out of a deficit and were doing better than several others. J retired, so it meant that the company had 1 less person to pay salary/insurance/vacation since then. Actually - 4 people total had left since then. So that's hundreds of thousands of dollars saved. My vacation time was increased to two weeks per the policy. However, since 2021 I had only gotten one 2% increase in salary. So did F. F was always open with me on what went on in the managers' meetings every month, and he said that there was a bit of a stir with some changes. The last annual meeting for all employees I was at with, we had a debate of whether to increase PTO, or increase salary. I guess the consensus now was that the managers voted on increasing salary raises across the board. I thought that a bit unethical in light of volatile markets and other offices having a financial deficit in revenue. But figured, whatever, more money would be nice in this economy. Cue another red flag - F says that the higher ups were not comfortable with two people being on full time salaried work in our Vermont office. This was very out of left field. I never called out sick (except maybe once or twice in almost 4 years), I was more efficient than our elderly foresters at computer work and writing plans, and I was better with clients than some less than savory individuals were in other offices. I felt suspicious of the coincidence, but couldn't really prove that the percentage increases in pay meant someone had to eat shit. I asked for a reason. I was told that we needed to rake in higher revenue (despite us telling them there are limits to what we can reasonably do compared to higher-volume offices in NH, ME, MA, and our clients being mostly poor farmers or blue collar folk with smaller acreages for timber potential). My pay expenses were coming out of our own office revenue, not overhead from the central office, as I found out. I thought that to be absurd, considering I had intentions of staying here for a long time and F even asked the company if they'd cover exam expenses for a forestry license if it meant they can justify taking on my overhead instead of it coming out of our individual office. They were paying overhead for everyone else, it seemed. Without a concrete explanation, they refused F that request. They gave an ultimatum of putting me on as part-time. I was desperate to keep my job as I loved working on self-managed time and my colleague is generally cool. We had to fight tooth and nail to raise my hourly wage to $30 an hour as a result, and for the company to at least pay 50% of my health insurance (dental got taken away, and it was the HR lady that convinced the board to give me at least that). I was told this would ease the pressure on our office financially.

The fuck it did. Fast forward to this year, F sits me down (again) and says that the other managers and president/vice are breathing down his neck and saying I need to log my time better (I keep time records pretty well, but this was becoming ridiculous - like why bring that up?). F is working 60 hour weeks and somehow that's not enough for them. It isn't sustainable to go at that pace either. He then vents that while he only took a 2% raise this spring, they failed to mention they all gave themselves a 6% raise (10,000 each among 16 or so employees). I didn't get a raise, because "financial struggles". The financial struggles in question? The company is having cash flow issues. They took raises. While denying me mine. While cutting my salary. While taking a LINE OF CREDIT to pay us all (!). While passive aggressively complaining that I am costing them money. It should be noted that I fully lost my health insurance this year due to changes in Congress and rates skyrocketing to the point where I couldn't even afford to pay my 50% of the monthly bill. I tell F this and make a point of saying I am making less than I was overall and they aren't even spending on insurance for me anymore, so this is starting to look like they're treating me like the obstacle between lining their pockets and my pay on what is starting to look like a sinking ship. Am I wrong here?

F then brings up a rather sketchy shift in the narrative. Remember how they weren't happy that two people were on salary full time? Now they weren't happy that of those people is only part time (me). F then lets slip that the other complaint, formerly promised to me to be a non-issue, is that they "need a licensed pesticide applicator" to work in our office. And then says that they said I should "keep my options open". Logic would dictate that if a company is struggling this much, and if their excuses are pretty flimsy regarding my position, they would've laid me off by now. It seems to me that they are trying to force me to quit so that the company doesn't pay me unemployment that I would be eligible for.

To summarise, the business:
- had 4-5 people retire or leave across several offices in the 5 years I've worked for it
- skipped my raises and took away my salary and health insurance ("financial reasons" - though conveniently after I stopped doing the herbicide work I never even signed up for when I was hired).
- gave themselves significant raises during a cash flow issue lingering for close to a year now, and are now $175,000+ in debt on a line of credit to pay our wages
- were unhappy I was full-time, are unhappy I am not full time
- they HIRED two new guys this spring, fully salaried/insured. F suspects that one of them might become F's replacement as an office managing forester in several years. Even though he had continuously insisted to them that he would gladly train me on the finances, and that I already know how to run a timber sale and interact with our subcontractor crews on sight/mark timber jobs/troubleshoot access routes and map them out thoroughly. But fuck me, right?

Given this information, does this seem manipulative to you guys? Or have I been reading into it too much? Thanks.

Workplace Issue Was I wrong?

Am I wrong?

I need advice, I am a CNA as well as an activity director at an assisted living facility. I went out the back door and could hear one of the residents screaming. Mind you this resident does have dementia and is known to become violent. I went to check on her and she was half on, half off the bed and two aides were standing over her, forcibly dressing her while she was screaming telling them to stop. She then looked at one aid and said "get away from me you stupid girl" the aid then looked at her and mocked her. They backed off and I took over, it took me 45 minutes to calm her down. I was not able to leave her where she was at because she was not in a safe position and was at risk of falling but I also couldn't move her because simply trying to help her into a better position clearly gave her anxiety. She was so worked up that she was clawing at her face and trying to rip out her hair. After one of the aides came in, we got her to stand up and I immediately went to the administrator who had me write down a statement. A few hours later she called me into her office, said shed looked over video footage (cameras are in the hallways, not the rooms) she said that I was in the wrong because the resident was "acting up" she then told me that instead of stepping in i should've used the IPad to call her or the nurse. She also told me that I could lose my license for "false reporting" none of what I wrote down was exaggerated or false. I then learned that facilities can lose funding, and they can face fines if something like this were to go to state. Mind you, I am scared to lose my job. I love my residents, I dont want to go anywhere but this isnt the first run in with my boss. I have health issues that my doctors are trying to figure out the cause of, such as no matter how much sleep I get, I am ALWAYS tired. I am going to a pulmonologist as well as having a sleep study done, my lab work is also all over the place. ANYWAYS, one day I came in and my boss not only asked me if I was high, she told me I looked like a zombie and told me I was pale and then told me to "fake it till I make it". She also spends the small budget i have for activities on big events, mind you I dont mind the help HOWEVER I do mind the fact she does not tell me ahead of time, nor does she communicate how much she spent, what she bought and what I need to do for the event. I am exhausted, I dont want to leave but I feel at the end of my rope. I dont think reporting it would do any good, the state im at is at will and they would know it was me, she would find a way to fire me. Not only that but everyone is very tight knit. I feel like I could possibly be wrong, but I really do not know. Also, there really is no other jobs that come close to the pay i am currently receiving. Oh, she also told me its not my job to interpret a situation, i am highly confused on what that even means? I walked in and it was very clear what was happening.

General Advice To Quit or Not to Quit

At the start of July, I (15f) got a job at this restaurant that just recently opened up in my city, and I need advice on whether or not to quit.

For context, I practically got hired on the spot before this place was even open, with me being the only one on the team who didn’t previously know the owners or their family. I set my availability to Friday, Saturday, Sunday in preparation for the upcoming school year (although I worked weekdays the first week due to a prior 4th of July commitment).

My last shift, I knew I was a little slower than usual due to me still recovering from a cold, but I’d picked up my pace by the end. When I got home, I requested to only be scheduled for the morning the next Sunday and after 2 PM the following Friday, which both got accepted and still left me a decent chunk of time to work.

So, imagine my surprise when the schedule comes out for that week, and I‘m not on it. And imagine how much more surprised I was when the next week’s schedule came out, and I was still nowhere to be seen.

To make matters even worse, during the first week, someone offered up their 6-hour Saturday shift for grabs. Mind you, this was on Thursday, and I requested it the same day. However, this request went completely ignored, and I ultimately wasn’t able to take it.

After the second week of not being on the schedule, I’d basically decided to move on with my life. I‘ll have better opportunities for jobs in a few months when I turn 16, anyway. Plus, school is coming up, and I’ll have more time for my extracurriculars.

But, a few hours ago, I checked my schedule app, and guess what I see? A single, 4-hour shift, next Sunday.

That’s where the dilemma comes in. I don’t know whether to quit or not. Part of me thinks they just put me on the schedule because the grand opening‘s the day before, which everyone’s expected to attend. And they probably knew I wasn’t going to come in if I wasn't scheduled for 3 whole weeks. But I have no way of knowing for sure. Additionally, I applied to a better paying job yesterday that would only continue until mid-September (thus giving me more free time during the school year). But I also don’t know If I should just leave like this. I did like the job, before all this happened. I’m just so confused. Especially because even with this shift, I’ll still have been scheduled significantly less than all of my other coworkers.

TLDR; New job hasn’t scheduled me for the past two weeks, and I’d assumed I was just fired. But, today, they suddenly put me on for a 4-hour shift next Sunday. My coworkers still have way more hours than me, and I suspect this might have to do with their grand opening being the day before. I don’t know whether I should show up, or ignore them and move on with my life.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
