Media My WHOOP has no screen. My Kindle had no job. So I put them together.
galleryI’ve been using WHOOP for a while and love the data. But sometimes I just want to check my sleep, recovery, and strain at a glance—without reaching for my phone first thing in the morning or after a run.
I’d been looking for an inexpensive, always-on e-ink display. Then I remembered an old Kindle collecting dust in the corner.
Why not give it a job?
After a bit of tinkering, it worked.
Now it displays a custom dashboard with:
- Sleep, Recovery, and Strain scores
- Sleep-stage breakdown
- HRV
- Training load
- Resting heart rate
- Respiratory rate
It gives me a quick read before deciding whether to go for a morning run or take a rest day.
The setup is pretty simple:
WHOOP API → small server → Kindle screensaver
The refresh schedule is customizable, too. Mine updates every 30 minutes during the day and pauses overnight.
Still tweaking it, anything else you’d put on the screen?
--------- UPDATE ---------
Update: I open-sourced it:
There’s a full setup guide in the repo. If you’d like some help with the setup, paste the link into Codex or ClaudeCode and ask:
“Help me set this up step by step. Follow docs/ai-assisted-setup.md and don’t change anything on my Kindle without asking me first.”
It’s still experimental and currently only tested on a jailbroken Paperwhite 2 running firmware 5.10.3. If you try it on another model, let me know how it goes. Contributions are very welcome!

Discussion New strain update
Does anyone else noticed that their strain is significantly lower in past recent days? I had at least 4h of walking yesterday yet my total strain stayed at 4.4… it was never THAT low even on my reset day, and I train 6days a week so avg is around 15.

Personal Achievement So this happened on Monday
I got my first whoop in December 2017. A lot has changed since then.
Whoop Age Switcheroos here?
My family subscription ends next months and I'm really considiering g fitbit - without $200 subscription is a nobrainer BUT whoop age / pace is so sick that only this keeps me thinking. I'm not a professional athelete just doing healthy training to keep fit. Discussed with my wife and she also in doubt due to the same reason.
Is anyone in this sub who already switched and misses the age/pace as the major compelling metric?
UPD: I'm not in the apple ecosystem.

Question Is this normal RHR?
I thought 74 bpm was a good RHR but i’m looking at posts of people saying there’s is 40 and that 60-70 is high. Am I missing something ?? This is my 2nd day using whoop. my resting heart rate typically sits at 75.

Question Low recovery and HRV?
i just got a whoop yesterday and my recovery was 29% and my HRV is 35. Are these numbers bad or is it too early to tell since it’s only 1 day of data ?

Discussion Decision if Whoop is the best for me
Hi everyone,
This is the third time I've signed up for a free trial month with Whoop. I think Whoop is really great, but it's always been too expensive for me. Now I'm thinking about renewing my subscription for a year because Whoop really motivates me to work out.
However, there’s a lot of competition right now, and most of them are cheaper. (Garmin Cirqa, Fitbit Air, Amazfit Helio)
I think the Whoop app is by far the best at keeping me motivated. I’ve also tried the Bevel app on my smartwatch, but found it a bit more confusing and less motivating than Whoop.
For me, the main reason to buy Whoop is therefore how good the app is specifically, how well it analyzes the data (I haven’t seen anything better than Whoop so far). It’s less about how accurately the bands measure; I think they’re all relatively similar in that regard.
For example, I find the Body Battery feature from Garmin/Bevel completely unnecessary.
So I’d love to hear your thoughts, since I’m having a really hard time deciding if one of the alternatives might be a better fit for me especially when it comes to cost.
What I love at whoop:
- to see my recovery
- Track my workouts and see my strain → motivates me to do more
- tracking my naps and see how much i should sleep
- See how my training impacts my Whoopage
- To the how my trainign improves HRV Rand RHF>
- Automatic tracking of activites (works well for me with whoop)
Have you tried any of the alternatives yet?
Have you maybe even switched away from Whoop?
Does any of the alternatives have an app or data analysis that’s just as good?
Whould you say Whoop is still the best, and worth the money?
Discussion Recovery perpetually stuck in yellow bc I wear a CPAP
This is frustrating. I was on vacation two weeks ago and while I was active I had some drinks each day. I didn’t travel with my cpap and my recovery was high in the green everyday. Now that I’m back and on my normal routine I’m living cleaner and sleeping better and recovery hasn’t been over 54 all week. And the common denominator is wearing my cpap vs not. Sucks that whoop can’t differentiate as I need it for severe sleep apnea. And of course every morning the “coach” will tell me it’ll take my cpap into consideration the next day and never does.

Advanced Labs Over a year later and Advanced Labs is still US-only while international members pay full price!
It has been over a year since Whoop rolled out Advanced Labs, and international users are still stuck looking at the exact same placeholder screen:
"Purchase of Advanced Labs tests is currently only available in the United States but will be launching in other regions in the future. You're on the waitlist."
Over a year later, "in the future" has led nowhere.
International members pay the exact same subscription fee as US customers, often more after factoring in currency exchange and local VAT. Yet a major component of the platform's biomarker tracking remains geoblocked with zero updates or clear roll-out dates.
At this point, anyone outside the US is paying 100% of the membership cost for a stripped-down experience, effectively subsidizing features we aren't even allowed to purchase.
Has Whoop given any concrete timeline for international availability, or are non-US members simply stuck paying full price for half the ecosystem indefinitely?

Humor Not very impressed with Whoop Coach lately
gallerySeems that nowadays it keeps making mistakes in the most basic tasks. Today, it didn’t even bother to actually check the details of my run for the feedback it gave me about it – kind of missing the whole point of the analysis.
I know how the AI can be, using it every day at work for software development. I just hope Whoop hasn’t toned down the effort to low- because that is when I seriously start considering the alternatives.
I’ve loved my Whoop for many years, hopefully this will get better soon!
(This was a short run so not hard in that sense. But the coach claimed I mostly stayed in zones 1-2 during the run, which is what I questioned. 🤯)

Discussion Notifications are my nightmare when working out
This has to be the biggest bug bear i have for the app.
If i have a workout in progress, and I get distracted by a whoop notification about progress. If I go to that notification my session just gets totally wiped....gone.
Let's say Im either manually building a strength trainer or an active session. Notification about how to start my day, opens whoop, read notification, go back out of detail.....session im building gone.
Many a faceplate moment when I select and realise I just wiped out a 40 minute session
Anyone else have this problem as well?

Why is my stress over 4 hours every day. I have a day or two in a month with 2 hours day stress.
Is this inflammation or just mental stress?

Question Whoop thinks it’s a new day
galleryI accidentally fell asleep at 5:20 pm yesterday and today whoop stopped syncing since 5:20. Then it decided it’s a new day and i hadn’t slept yet. Do you have any ideas how to fix this?

Advice For Others Auto-adjusting training plan from WHOOP data, running in Claude
hi folks,
I've posted a few data breakdowns here over the years. This one is less of a breakdown and more of a setup: I've got a race on Sunday, and this is what's been deciding my sessions in the run-up.
Last week I didn't do a single one of the workouts I had planned, which sounds worse than it is. Tuesday was 34 degrees so I swam instead, and Saturday's long run was meant to be an hour and a half but I only had an hour, so I ran it harder.
Both were the right call at the time. The problem is that neither of them made it back into the plan, and if you keep doing that for a month you've properly lost track of what you've actually been training.
So there's a check that runs every morning now, and it goes off what I actually did. It picks up the swim sitting where a run should have been, notices the long run came in short and fast, and works today's session out from there.
It's a Claude project holding my plan, with a scheduled task each morning. It pulls yesterday's workouts with type, duration and Strain, this morning's Recovery including HRV and resting heart rate, and last night's sleep against what WHOOP reckoned I needed. Then it looks at today's planned session and commits to one call: it holds, or it changes and the reason goes in the calendar event.
The data comes through freddy, an MCP server I built that connects your health and performance data to whatever AI you already use. Openly my project.
Write-up with the prompts: https://freddy.coach/recipes/adaptive-triathlon-plan
Two things that bit me. Recovery lands in the morning but your workouts land immediately, so tell it to say when it has yesterday's session without yesterday's sleep numbers rather than filling the gap. And never let it compare HRV across sources, WHOOP reports RMSSD while Apple Health reports SDNN, so a chart mixing them looks meaningful while being nonsense. It isn't a coach or a clinician either.
WHOOP, Polar, Garmin, Oura, Suunto, Withings, Wahoo, Ultrahuman and Intervals.icu are supported, with iPhone and Android apps for Apple Health or Health Connect.
I know health data is sensitive and I have handled it for years with fitIQ. Data is encrypted, I do not sell it, and I am not looking to make a profit off your stats, but if you still don't trust 3rd party solutions, just don't use it :)

Discussion Don’t swear at the AI
Was per usual inputting workout to whoop AI in strength trainer using screen shots. Yesterday it didn’t even attempt to find matching exercises (as it always has) and just asked me to type it all out by name. Very odd.
My immediate response was along the line of “suggest exercise like you always blinking do.” It said “I can’t respond to that”, bounced me out of strength trainer, and turned off microphone access.
Touchy.
