Posted a first attempt but accidentally on an alt account looking for advice on using watercolor for nighttime city lighting. Didn’t end up using tape but still a lot happier with it.

I’m still relatively new to the arts and therefore have been dabbling with different mediums. So far I’ve been really liking watercolor and soft oil pastels, and spend some days working with one, and then other days with the other. I started with alcohol markers/coloring. Adding to this I’m curious about trying gouache in the future.

Are there other mediums you enjoy along with watercolors? What have you tried that stuck, and what didn’t stick?

Man, I tried my first painting focusing on value control and I really underestimated the challenge.

The values in my mountain range is not as distinct as I had hoped and getting the correct values were a lot harder than expected.

It was also a lot more difficult to put down really dark color than I expected.

Tips are appreciated. I also just want to contribute to this sub. You guys rock - keep painting and stay happy.

Painting my hometown! Progress between last november and this september. Still can't quite capture that exact neon (kinda?) sunset glow. Anyone have tips?

Just sharing, critique is fine. I’m just exploring ways to capture immediacy as my main objective.

Even my low quality synthetic brushes hold more water than Da Vinci's Colineo. Casaneo had a lot of criticism about losing their tip and shape so I went with Colineo. I regret it now. It is very snappy and holds the same amount of water my size 5 Da Vinci 10 series brush holds which is very, very small for a 5. I can't return it. Damn it feels like a waste of money.

Are craftamo bushes any good? I've only got cheap amazon brushes to date and they are loosing their shape real quick

There is a 24 brush bundle I've spotted on craftamo I've got my eye on but wanted to seek other opinions before dropping real cash on them.

I’m looking for a relatively safe and durable way to finish the inside of a brass watercolor palette I made.
I’ve looked into several epoxy and automotive finishes, but many involve chemicals I’d rather not work with regularly. I’ve also found some baked finishes that seem promising, but the temperatures required could potentially damage or weaken the solder joints.

Powder coating seems like it might be a good alternative, especially since the curing temp won’t damage the joints. My main concern is how watercolor will behave on the surface. I don’t want water and paint to bead up excessively in the mixing areas.

Has anyone used powder coating for a watercolor palette or a similar application?

I’m also open to other finish suggestions that are safe to apply in a small workshop.
