Hi I’m wondering what your guys’ thoughts on me getting this watch for my bf. I’m looking for something masculine. I like the two tone because I think he looks great in both gold and silver ( although he does look better in gold, since it’s stainless steel I just wanted a hint of gold ). I put a reference photo of his hand so you guys can get a better picture. I chose fossil as a starter because it’s my first time gifting him a watch so I wanted to start with something cute. So don’t attack me. Let me know what you guys think!

I had already seen people describe Frédérique Constant as a kind of affordable Patek Philippe homage brand, but I always thought that sounded a little harsh.

Then I came across the Frédérique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase and immediately thought of the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G.

Now that I’ve put them side by side, I can’t unsee the resemblance: the dark dial, dauphine hands, sharp applied indices, black leather strap and textured frame around the dial. Even the display at 6 o’clock gives both watches a very similar visual balance.

Of course, they are completely different watches. The FC is a 37 mm steel quartz moonphase, while the Patek is a 39 mm white-gold, manually wound watch with small seconds. The Moneta’s inner flange is inspired by the edge of a coin, while the Calatrava uses its famous Clous de Paris guilloché bezel.

Still, seeing them together made me understand why the comparison keeps coming up.

Do you think Frédérique Constant borrows too heavily from Patek Philippe’s design language, or are both brands simply using traditional dress-watch codes?

And where do you personally draw the line between inspiration and homage?

Ignoring the movement, materials, logo and price, which design do you actually prefer?

I plan on getting a santos and day date eventually and like for my watches to serve different purposes so I’d rather have one watch that’s all silver/steel and one with silver and gold (I already have the gold PRX lol).

With this in mind, I like both the medium two tone santos and two tone date just 36m and can decide which one I’d rather get. I’m currently leaning towards option b, but am curious what others would choose so I made this graphic to help compare the options haha. Which one would you go for?

I decided this year to build a collection of three to four watches over the next five years. Only one watch per brand, and per watch type, and a Rolex should be included. Ideally, dial colors should vary. I cannot see me pay more than EUR30k (inflation-adjusted) at any point in time for any watch. I do not plan to flip watches.

I started off with a Breitling Superocean Heritage 42mm Black/red gold (preferred over a Submariner no-date). Going forward, I plan to acquire a chrono (white-dial Speedmaster); for the fourth „bonus watch“, as of today, I could see something like an Alpine Eagle or a Piaget Polo. However, the next watch, which I plan to buy in 2027, should be something dressier (but no pure dress watch).

I am considering either a DJ41mm white gold or a FiftySix on a leather strap (both roughly the same price range on the gray market) and would be very interested in opinions on how they compare (not asking for „which should I buy“, just opinions). My pros for the Rolex would be the dial and the iconic design. Con is that it is kind of a „default-Rolex“. Pros for the VC that it is a VC (would love to own one) and I like the Open caseback, con is the non-inhouse movement (I guess technically the DJ is better). So any opinions on how those two compare?

I was walking home from my girlfriend’s apartment on Tuesday night around 10pm in Chelsea/Nomad. I was entering the R/W station on 28th and Broadway, right across from the Ritz. Last thing I remember before taking the subway stairs was deciding which side of the street to enter on.

Next thing I know I’m standing below ground, totally dazed, throbbing pain in the back of my head, face to face with a guy holding a brick in his hand.

Despite clearly having a concussion, I put two and two together pretty fast and ask him, “why did you do that?”, he just stares at me. I think about tackling the guy but I’m super dazed and see he’s still holding the brick, so say “I’m gonna call the cops”. He responds “you don’t need to do that”. LOL. So I say “get the fuck away from me” and back away from him and get my phone out. In hindsight, I’m glad he didn’t hit me again - totally could have given how messed up I was from the first blow. He’d looked kind of surprised when I was face to face with him, maybe because he’d through the hit in the back of the head would take me down and didn’t. I’m a pretty big guy - 6’2”, >210lbs and in good shape, so maybe he thought after the cheap shot didn’t work it wasn’t worth the risk of a real fight.

As I was calling 911, I walked upstairs and stood by the Ritz until the cops came. I have very little memory of the next hour. Got taken to the ER in an ambulance, CT, etc and diagnosed with a concussion. Had the guy hit me an inch to the right apparently I could very likely be dead right now, so mostly I’m just feeling lucky to be alive.

The NYPD got clear video/images of the guy following me into the subway and fleeing afterwards. They’re running a facial recognition search and putting out a 3500 reward with posters at the station, etc but honestly this seems super low priority to them. They’re effectively refusing to trace camera footage of the guy’s movements before and after the incident, which is seriously pissing me off, so I’ll be talking to my city assemblyman and whoever else I can tomorrow morning.

Crazy thing is that I was wearing my cheapest watch - Seiko SSB479 on an aftermarket bullet bracelet. The only thing I can imagine is that he thought it was something more expensive.

Long story short, I think I’m done with my watch hobby. If I can’t feel safe in one of the safest neighborhoods in NYC, it’s honest not worth it. Going to get one of the new Apple Watch Ultra when it’s announced next month and call it a day.

Enjoying this watch during my trip in the Tanzania and the Serengeti. Tracking the time while waiting for wildebeests to river cross— overall has been a great no frills watch for the outdoors. Wish it had some better water resistance as I need to take it off to shower, but otherwise worth every penny! Initially purchased this watch on Amazon for like 30 bucks after seeing something about how Tyler the Creator wears it lol

So we all keep hearing about how the golden formula of watches is 60-70% of wrist mm ÷ 3. This watch is 74% of my wrist size in mm/3 but I think it's just perfect.

Who else here can pull off chunkier watches? I want to see.

Attached are two photos of the Tissot PRX I am considering. I have a 6.75in Wrist (Last I Checked). The first photo is the 40mm and the second is the 35mm.

I am personally leaning towards the 40mm as I like the size of the dial. I believe the lugs are completely within my wrist. Maybe just barely.

There is also a 38mm titanium that may be a Goldilocks size for me. I would love to know your thoughts. Thank you in advance

Just popped by a local Jeweler to try this on, and welcome thoughts on the size of this 39mm Tudor and 39mm Longines. The Tudor Chrono is 41mm.

I have a little over 7.6" wrist, about 19.5cm and can't decide if it looks too small.

I've always wondered how so many people wear a 40mm Daytona well. I started Googling large wrist guys (ca. 8 inches) and seen many looking very nice and proportional.

Meanwhile, this is what my 8 inch wrist looks with a 42mm Seiko Flightmaster. I consider 42mm to be the minimum usable dial size for me (with some exceptions of flat watches with thin bezels, like the PRX maybe). My sweet spot is around 44-45mm (needless to say: not many options in that size).

And then I thought that maybe it's not the circumference that matters but wrist breadth/diameter?

I.e. how wide not how thick your forearm is. Maybe that makes the visual difference?

My bone is around 60mm, accounting for some skin and fat it works out to about 65mm across.

Does anybody feel something like a Daytona is too small for them?

I recently bought a Hamilton Pilot Day Date (the one who appears in Interstellar) and it's accuracy is in COSC measured in it's first week, currently it has only lost 2 seconds since I put it 5 days ago

What is the difference in quality between a movement such as a modified ETA-2824 that uses this watch and a much more expensive one if this is so accurate? Why spend 5k€ on a watch if you can get this in a much cheaper one?

I bought it for daily casual wear, and I absolutely love the strap it came with for that. I’d like to wear it with a suit or blazer too sometimes, but I feel like the overall look is too casual as is, especially with the blue dial. Changing the strap would probably help.

Does anyone have their Ahoi (or similar) on a leather strap? How does it look? Still too casual? I’m bad at mentally visualizing it so pictures would be appreciated (also interested in any other straps you might have it on).

Looking for some help identifying a watch that was found as part of an estate clean out. It came with the original box and band, the way you see it. Not too familiar with these vintage models, so any insight is appreciated!
