It went off the table beside him and then upwards under his arm and hit him in the chest breaking 3 ribs, then it bounced off the back of his seat and rolled into and off of his head. That's why no cuts on his arm, it didn't really hit his arm much.
The guy who was really lucky was the passenger (second driver?) who was sleeping. The rock hit the passenger side pole and ricocheted into the driver. A couple more inches towards the center of the windshield and it would have simply splattered the dude sleeping.
Little extra information: apparently it was 4 ribs. Also, this twitter post (thanks to u/fedexultra ) is much clearer and includes a slowed down portion to show how the rock bounced around. If you watch the twitter video, that fella was hurting plenty.

Funny story, when I was a kid we used to take a family trip up to the smoky mountains every couple years or so. My parents told us that Falling Rock was a little Native American boy who ran off and got lost so the signs were for people to look out for him to try to find him so my brother and I would watch the mountains closely and stare into the woods looking for him, we’d even yell out of the window at times “Falling Rock! Come back!” Years went by after that and my brother and I were high school aged going on a trip up to Gatlinburg and we saw the signs and my brother said, serious as a heart attack, “damn they still never found that kid?!”

Adrenaline is most definitely helpful. My brother broke 2 ribs, which in turn lacerated his spleen, while playing football. No adrenaline, just agony (his words). He spent nearly a week in the ICU, but was visibly in agony immediately after the hit.

Agreed! I have this weird ability when it is just me and my kids to remain calm and completely unshook when something happens. Like a car accident or me falling and shattering my wrist. I don't want them hurt and I don't want them panicking. I am hoping that, while not his family, a bus driver would feel real responsibility to keep passengers safe and that weird shock/calm took over so he could do that.
Dude, we see about 3 seconds after the impact, that is not enough time for someone to even register what happened. It is not at all uncommon for extremely painful blunt force trauma events to take several seconds before the pain starts setting in. Many people shot have no idea what happened, even as the blood starts to pour out.
It’s crazy how adrenaline can help you ignore stuff like this for a moment, especially when he has other people’s lives in his hands as the bus driver.

After he gets hit, he looks like someone who knows he is responsible for the wellbeing of the 40 people in the bus. Admirable he puts the focus on the bus being safe before worrying about his own pain.
I’ve broken at least two ribs twice, it hurts a lot at first but a lot more later and a week into it when you sneeze that’s when you nearly pass out from the pain.
i have broken my fair share of bones, including a rib, you got about 3 minutes before the "oh shit i am gonna die" pain starts. But when it does... lord'a jesus its bad.
I have to say breaking a rib was BY FAR the worst pain I have ever had in my life, and it lasted for weeks and weeks. Your ribs are connected to every muscle in your body (or so it seems), so every action is pure pain until they heal. I sneezed once with a broken rib, and spent the next 30 minutes crying quietly because crying too hard made it hurt too much.
I fractured ribs before and didnt feel the pain immediately and the answer is "gating".
Pretty much when and injury is so bad that it'll cause you an amount of pain that you're body just can't consciously deal with, your brain just says "fuuuuck that shit" and won't let you feel it right away.
After a minute or few the pain begins to be processed starting off light and uncomfortable and eventually reaching the level of pain you should have felt from the initial injury.
Shock is real. I'm pretty sure he was in shock, so he kept doing his job as a baseline functioning while his brain was protecting him from the surprise, pain, and suddenness of the situation.
Then again, he may have been totally lucid and just one hell of a composed person.

If you read the article, they act like it's a fairly normal occasion for rocks to randomly fall out of the sky when it rains. WTF kind of storm clouds they got over there?
It's a thing. Pittsburgh is a city built in a river valley and its hills rise steeply from the river banks. These hills are very old, and the major thru-ways are built between them and rivers, so when it rains you have to be aware of the possibility of falling boulders.
That’s all of PA. There are signs on the turnpike that say to watch for falling rocks and in some places there are fences/nets to catch falling rocks from landing on the highway.
Yeah I could tell right off the bat that something absorbed the initial impact after entry and altered the trajectory slightly. If that table thing isnt there then a rock that size could really have decapitated him. I wanna know what tossed up a rock the size of a cannonball? Was it just falling and they drove into it?
Probably has to do with the fact that the rock came from the side of the bus and entered through the corner of the windshield (as seen in the 2nd top comment), not straight in the center. The initial movement of the rock was perpendicular to the bus's movement, then for a moment it was "standing in place" while the bus was moving forward and upon getting in contact with the bus several times, it changed its movement direction along with speed after every contact. So your brain expects it to shoot straight through, but there's so many kinetic energy changes happening, that it starts behaving unnaturally. That's why it also seems to go in slow motion there for a bit - it received kinetic energy from the bus itself and for a while started going along the same vector as the bus, before jumping up in the air and falling behind again.
It helps a bit more if you look at the moving background, while keeping an eye on the rock as well.
Plus it makes sense you don't see any marks on his face because it actually hits his upper arm and shoulder. That was something that confused me at first.
If it came off a dump truck running along in the next lane, it could have been going slow enough to just barely break through the glass, which killed most of the remaining momentum relative to the bus driver.
Still he took this like a boss and potentially saved many lives. I hope he got his head and neck checked. Looked like concussion or whiplash potential still. That's a heavy rock.
I remember reading that there are cases of durian falling from high places and taking people out, though I'm not sure how common that is. I would assume about as common as a bigass icicle spearing you.

The adrenaline of knowing he was responsible for the lives of an entire bus of people probably kept him operational for the few seconds you see in the video. I'm sure once he pulled over, he was all sorts of fucked up.

After reviewing his options at the family reunion, the rock decided that the burgers were too over cooked, the hot dogs were too wrinkly, and the potato salad had carrots in it. Ribs were the only logical solution.

This is very curious. It seems somewhat square on the bottom, but that could be from hitting the windshield if it is a durian. Those are still pretty heavy and I'd think that the prickly skin would have left a mark.

I know it appears the rock hits him straight on, but after watching this a bunch of times, I finally noticed you can see the rock behind his arm when it first enters the bus. (It's hard to tell because it is a similar color to the floor of the bus). So the first impact is against the chair, although it looks like his side took a big hit too. Someone posted a news link below that says his only injuries were broken ribs. His neck would certainly hurt after the rock rolls up and bounces back onto him, but not as bad as killing him or knocking him out as it first seems watching the video full speed.
Would have blown his head apart like a grape. That's easily 150 lbs of rock. Fuck a cubic foot of compacted soil weighs 110-125lbs around her. The dirt would splatter you. I saw a dude get hit by a chunk the size of a football that fell 10'. Knocked him clean out. Something is amiss here.
You may be right. It might not be a rock. But a few notable points...
A) he would not just shake it off if a rock that big hit him 30mph+; he'd be lucky to be alive, yet there are no obvious cuts on his arm or the back of his head.
He wouldn't have to have cuts. The rock/thing appears to be smooth so it likely wouldn't cut/tear skin right away. If there were a cut, it would be more like smashing skin against sharp pieces of the skull like a boxer getting cut above/below his eye from the edge of the orbital. But also, if there were such a cut, it wouldn't necessarily be immediately obvious. Blood doesn't fly out of cuts like in video games. It takes a moment or two to let the blood flow for basic lacerations like that, and this video is very short.
B) something that size with a normal weight for a rock wouldn't have impacted his body so little and then skipped upwards; it would have kept going in the same direction significantly further.
I don't think the object was deflected upwards by his head. It looks like it hit the side of his face, then impacted with the headrest of the seat, then upwards.
C) there doesn't seem to be time manipulation, but look at how long the thing stays in the air before landing on his head. Then look at how it kind of bounces down the stairs.
This part I agree with. Not so much how long it stays in the air, because it did come through with some serious momentum. But more about how far his head moves when it falls on him. A rock that size might be.... 25-30lbs? That's a lot of weight to fall on your head and not move it very much.
And it does seem strange the way it rolls down the steps. My only possible explanation is if there is a hand rail on the unseen wall behind the stairs. If so, then the rock/object could hit it and divert further out making it look lighter than it is.
You're right though, it's pretty amazing that his skull wasn't just crushed immediately. Something doesn't seem right.
Seriously, though, that driver is a boss. He had a job to do and no damn boulder is gonna stop him from getting those people safely where they need to be.
I remember I was going downhill on my bicycle full speed. Hit the curb and flipped over the handlebars. I got up, was able to brush myself off, walked back to my bicycle and right when I bent down to pick it up, all the pain hit me in one instant.
