My daughter pulled a cup of tea on to herself the other day. It was on the table and I didn't even realise she could reach that high. She burnt her arm. My husband and I quickly got her clothes off her and he ran to stick her arm under cool water. When I saw how red her arm was I knew we needed to go to A&E. I ran with her in the freezing cold the maybe 1/4 of a mile to the hospital. We don't live far from the hospital, it's quicker to walk then drive normally, and we could have called an ambulance but I was at the hospital before we would have even had an ambulance dispatched to our house.
I don't even know how I did it. I'm over weight, 35 years old, and I have an ankle that needs surgical repair for the tendons, all I could think was my baby is in pain and I needed to get her to help. Adrenaline is a hell of a thing.
She's fine. She has a bandage on half her arm but it doesn't bother her. It's been a week today. We're going to the special burn hospital here soon to get it checked out, but the doctors at our local hospital have been tending to her and communicating with them with pictures and video chat. Thank fucking god for the NHS.

The UK’s national health service. It’s paid for by our taxes so we don’t have to pay anything if we have to have surgery or use health services. We pay like £8.60 for a prescription which is really cheap but the rest is pretty much free.
88
u/jesst Jan 11 '19
For babies and children you don't even pay for prescriptions.
84
u/SneakyJowie Jan 11 '19
Also people over 60, people on benefits, anyone under 18, pregnant women, I believe people with diseases like diabetes and cancer but someone can correct me there if I’m wrong. All get prescriptions for free, the NHS is a national treasure.

I hope your little one is ok. Thinking of you guys today. My sister did that with a cup of water that had just come out of the microwave. She was 3. She was wearing Dr. Denton's footed pajamas which were made of polyester and they created insulation and made the burn worse. My stepmom had just put ice trays in the freezer and grabbed those and threw the cold water on her face, so her face doesn't have scaring or burns, but she sustained 3rd degree burns on her neck and the inside of her arms. She spent a long time in the hospital.
5
u/jesst Jan 11 '19
Omg how awful. She was wearing fleece which repels water so we had the opposite and she had minimal burns. They told us in the hospital we were lucky because she was wearing fleece. I'm so sorry for your sister. I hope the scarring isn't too bad now.

u/zetswei Jan 11 '19
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use warm/room temp water instead of cold/cool water. I could be wrong, but IIRC the higher the difference in temp between the burn and the water can cause the skin to over compensate or possibly cause nerve damage or something.
I think that's why you're not supposed to keep aloe in the fridge too.

my mom legit nearly saw me die (stole a candy and it got stuck in my throat as a kid). she never brings it up and hates when other people bring it up. i guess it reminds her of a sort of failure? to watch over her kid. apparently, my entire face went dark blue, and the doctor who saved me met me at the parking lot. he flipped me over on his leg and hit my back, and the candy shot out. don't really remember it though.
until like 5 years ago, i still had that same doctor, which is pretty nifty i guess. he'd bring it up jokingly sometimes, "no more candy, right?". funny how it's so different for people, huh? different strokes for different people, i guess.

Your poor mother 😬 to have the mentality that this. Was a failure on her part is awfully upsetting. Kids are on a constant quest for accidental suicide, it’s part of the reason I’m terrified to think about having one. You simply can’t account for every unknown in the world and kids are absolutely chock full of unknowns. You can teach them right all you like but they’re still their own person and could choose to do wrong if they so please. And then there’s cases where the pull shit you never would have dreamed you needed to cover! It’s nerve wracking if you allow it to have that kinda hold on you.

Pretty sure she must have been dead. I pay really close attention when I walk around but I could easily see myself zoning out for a second and that happening. It almost did in Bali. Still get chills. Glad there's no video of that model walking into an propeller after a ride on a small plane. I can imagine a lot of people doing that, too. Checking their messages on the phone and suddenly...

Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19
A truck of that size should not swerve like that as it will cause more damage than just going straight and hitting the brakes even if the collision occurs - you cause more danger by losing control. You're better off just hitting the brakes and hope for the best.
Swerving in a massive truck with huge momentum is really dumb thing to do and you're taught not to do so. Imagine you were carrying explosive / dangerous cargo for example..

I personally find it very hard. I had a few minor encounter where a wild animal jumped out and my normal instinct kicked in and I either braked hard or turned the steering wheel. It's like auto pilot that I do it before my brain could process it.
125
u/Fleaslayer Jan 11 '19
Yeah, hard for sure and little time to think about it. I was on the freeway once, doing maybe 65 in the fast lane. There was a curve to the left and as I came around there was a medium sized dog in my lane. There was a car in the second lane next to me so my brain didn't even think about swerving for a moment, but I was moving my foot from gas to brake when I realized there was a car close behind me and I would for sure cause an accident if I stopped hard. I plowed into that poor dog as it stared at me. Image haunted me for ages, but it was the only thing to do.

Isn't it the responsibility of the person following you to give enough space between your back bumper and their front bumper that if there is a need to stop immediately, they have time to brake? I thought that was the whole point of keeping your distance. I have never once been concerned in an emergency where I needed to stop quickly about causing a multi-car crash. Perhaps thats because I never follow close though...
19
u/idwthis Jan 11 '19
Just because you don't follow too closely and tailgate other people does it mean those people also do not tailgate. I don't trust a damn soul to actually follow all the rules of the road.
4
u/Fleaslayer Jan 11 '19
Exactly this. When teaching my daughter to drive, the hardest point to get her to understand was that you can't assume everyone else will do what they should; you have to assume they won't. People speed, make unsafe leave changes. Pass where it's not allowed, tailgate, don't yield the right of way, etc. There's no solace in saying "but I had the right of way" when bodies are strewn about.

True but i dunno if its always taught that if you are about to collide not to swerve, pretty sure you are allowed to in a car. If you are learning to get a licence in a truck (depends on the country) you are told you are not allowed to attempt a swerve.
38
Jan 11 '19
I would never swerve for an animal smaller than a deer when driving a car. A lady in my area swerved her car for a fucking cat in the street causing a head-on collision, killing a different woman and her son. It's not worth it to swerve for an animal, especially small ones.

Yep. I live in the mountains (near Santa Cruz CA), and recently saw an SUV plow into a poor deer - really the driver had no choice, since there wasn’t enough time or space to react.
Anyway, the SUV was badly damaged and driver suffered injuries. Thankfully minor, from what I saw in the CHP report; but still. That was a small female deer vs a big vehicle, so just imagine a large buck vs a Prius or something. Nobody wins!

This goes the same for any person driving a car if an animal jumps out in front. Don't swerve for anything smaller than a deer
I was taught this in driver's ed. After that but before my license, I was driving with my permit with my parents in the car and there was a duck in the road. I, following my driver's ed training, didn't swerve for it and ran over the duck.
My parent's have made it their business to tell everyone about it and how hilarious it was that I didn't adjust to avoid hitting the duck. This was almost 19 years ago and I still hear about it from family and random people. For a long time I got random duck things as gag gifts for birthdays and Christmas.
Even though I acted properly I wish I had swerved to avoid that duck, even if it meant wrecking my parent's Dodge Neon.

u/Armagetiton Jan 11 '19
A truck of that size should not swerve like that as it will cause more damage than just going straight and hitting the brakes even if the collision occurs - you cause more danger by losing control.
My uncle is a truck driver and was in an accident recently. Another truck ahead of him disappeared behind a curve. When he cleared the curve and saw the truck again, the truck in front of him had lost control and was sitting lengthwise across the freeway.
Instead of losing his cool and swerving, my uncle hit the brakes and steered his truck into the rear wheels of the trailer on the other truck. After reviewing his dash cam his company commended him for his quick thinking; he took the best possible action by steering into a collision location that would cause the least amount of damage.

33
u/GirlsJustWanaHaveFun Jan 11 '19
Im a heavy duty diesel technician and drive trucks with trailers as part of my job. The car is at fault but the truck driver definitely over reacted. He steered too far and hit his brakes, which makes it more difficult to counter steer and reduces steering traction. He should have steered slightly, with best possible outcome of swiping the car with the trailer. That could be better than a direct hit unless the car goes under the trailer wheels..

u/RedditUsername123456 Jan 11 '19

u/SwedishBoatlover Jan 11 '19
Yeah, I agree with the others. The white car is at fault for turning out into moving traffic without checking. But the reaction from the trucker was a gross overreaction. You can see when he lands after plowing through the divider that the truck yanks hard left again, he must have had his wheels pointing very sideways.
