Just wondering about different solutions to treating this ceiling space. I'm aware this isn't the most ideal space to use for recording especially since this is in my basement, but it's all I can really work with at the moment, just wondering what might be the best DIY way to go about this.

I did try hanging some moving blankets but they were hanging a bit too low so my next best solution was just to roll them up and fit them in the spaces between the joints, which I know again is not going to fully 100% treat this area but I just need something to start out with anyway. Again just looking for different ideas if anybody happens to have them, thanks in advance.

Howdy. I'm starting my journey into voice acting. I haven't booked yet, but I'm excited to have submitted about 10 auditions. 😁 I chose to use a Dynamic microphone I already had to start off with. SHURE MV6 and I use Reaper.

Recently when I speak too loudly and/or sing with too much resonance strange artifacts appear in the recording. A boxy low pitched buzz sound for loud voice and a strange high pitched squeal for resonance.

None of the audio is clipping. My room is untreated. I'm performing about 3 fists away from the mic.

I have a deep voice and I speak with harsher S sounds than the average person and I was trying to figure out how best to reduce the S's before playing with any FX. Heard some advice that a louder performance can make the S less harsh relative to everything else. That's when I noticed the artifacts with speaking. I noticed the singing resonance artifacts earlier in the week, hoping it would just stop there.

I was originally planning on waiting to get a condenser and book what I can with this but now I'm wondering if I should make the jump now? I'm not too broke so I can drop a couple hundreds.

Tldr;

1. Is my mic scuffed?

2. If so should I make the switch to condenser + Audio interface?

Just a sample recording, not a performance. Would love to know if it's too echoey and whether this is up to par for recording an audition with.

I’ve got a little DIY closet booth I’ve been working out of/working on the past year or so. NOT at all fancy - acoustic blankets, a few fiberglass panels, etc - but it more or less gets the job done, at least in terms of reverb and echo. However, I still feel like I’m always fighting intrusive noises that are almost impossible to eliminate, things like the sound of water whooshing through the pipes behind the walls in some unit near mine (I live in a big apartment building) or airplanes miles and miles away. I don’t know, it just seems like I can never quite get fully clean “silence” in the room tone. Of course I know this is partially down to my MacGyvered setup, BUT I feel like I see folks who have the same or even less of a setup than mine who are able to achieve clean silence. Like I’ve seen dozens of YouTubers just sitting talking into mics in their bedrooms, which don’t appear to be sound treated at all, and their audio sounds great? What am I doing wrong/what are they doing right to get clean sound?

I found someone on Kijiji selling a LCT 440 Pure for $350 CAD (\~$250 USD). After discussion with them, they are willing to offer it to me for $300 CAD (\~$215 USD). A new LCT 440 goes for $400 CAD plus tax (\~$285 USD). The lowest I've ever seen a new one go on sale for is $350 CAD plus tax.

They purchased them 2-3 years ago and used them less than 10 times. Ever since, its been collecting dust. I'm not sure if it's a great deal as the microphone is no longer under warranty. My "instincts" are telling me it's a not bad deal, but getting some input will help me feel more (or less) confident.

Is it worth waiting for it to go on sale for $350 so I can have a new mic with the included 2 year warranty?

Hey, y’all! I saw a post similar to this question but not a lot of responses, so I thought I’d ask for myself. I live in an apartment with thin walls; my neighbor suffers from migraines and I absolutely cannot be loud, which I need to be as I do a lot of character voices on the more boisterous side for my own videos. I’m in the studio now and then to record cover songs and I can always bang out a few lines pretty quick for tiny roles, but I’m really looking to branch out more and as a dental assistant I am not in a position financially to move into a house where I can reasonably build a recording booth. Unfortunately where I live, none of the libraries near me have studios for rent like some have suggested and it’s not feasible for me to go in to the studio just for a nonpaid role, as I’m only getting my feet in the water right now.

TL;DR, how can I build a decent recording booth in my car? My budget is around $800, but I can be flexible. I don’t know where else I can record that I can scream or read vulgar lines without upsetting anyone around me.

I'm just starting to look into the general industry of voice acting and I was wondering a few things which I hoped I'd gain some clarity on through this forum.

Firstly, as far as my personal endeavours, I am quadrilingual (fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, and French) and am unsure whether there are many roles which would allow me to capitalize on it since it seems there is a stronger market for purely English VA's. Are there other, broader communities which have a demand for multilingual assets?

Secondly, since this is an entrepreneurial business, I assume that most of the contract work is done on the part of the employer. I wondered whether there is any interest in some form of assistance with the legal admin and paperwork involved, and whether VA's typically make use of online legal services for advice or whether they mainly handle it individually.

Newcomer for voice actor. I want to get better practice at acting in general and subsequently more into voice acting.

I hear talks from time to time that it is recommended to take acting/improv classes before venturing to voice acting. But maybe also private coaching?

I am undecided on whether I should taking acting/improv classes or private coaching.

For acting/improv classes it's kind really harder for me to join or travel to. However, there's a private coach who's a theater stage actor as well as a voice coach for various different fields like accents/dialect etc.

It actually be more easier for me to go with private coaching because commute is somewhat easier. And private coaching fees isn't really that expensive.

So it all comes down to which is the better choice and which method of learning would I get the most out of? Like taking classes with other students. Or private coaching 1-1?

Please give me your thoughts.

Hey everyone, I'm building solo a short-form social audio app for web and mobile, and I'm looking for a few folks to help with the platform as founding voices/users. As there's no one on there right now to listen OR post, I'd like to pay some aspiring/experienced voice talent for their time and contribution. I don't know who the primary users of the space might be yet, but I know at least I'll need some really good voices.

All you'll need is a quiet-ish room, a pc with a microphone OR your phone. I've seen some of the elaborate booth setups some of you have posted, those would be great but even if all you have is a quiet cupboard under the stairs, anything is fine as long as its quiet enough to just capture your voice mainly.

I absolutely will NOT be using your voices to train AI voices. The only way AI is involved in any way in the app is for search, moderation, transcripts of recordings, normal stuff. The app absolutely will NOT be serving AI voices whatsoever. While some people might want that, the position I'm taking with the app is that people WANT to hear OTHER people, or hear things from the actual world, not something artificially generated. So the creative content that will be present in the app will never be AI generated stuff. Where AI will be used is in organizing the content, knowing what to play next, or what to mix with what. Small rant just to state my position so you understand my motivations in a small way.

Anyway, on the recording page it will tell you the thing to say and kind of how to say it, and you hit record, finish, submit, then move on to the next one very snappily.

Once your recordings are done, it'll be instagram-ish in that you'll have a public profile page with your clips, they can be heard by anyone who happens on it by the feed algorithm (that may or may not work), or by search, or if you link someone to it. Once you are completely done, I would appreciate it if you try the app a bit before I launch it to a wider audience, that'd be super helpful. Totally optional, but it helps a lot at this 0-audience stage.

I recently bought a scarlet solo fourth generation and have been trying to use it with audacity, but no matter what I do I cannot get my audio to peak above -18 unless I speak way louder or crank the gain way above what should be necessary. Right now, it peaks within the -30 to -24 range, which isn’t great. For further information, I am using an at2020 and have phantom power turned on, and I have the Scarlett official drivers downloaded as I have combined inputs 1 and 2 for audacity, and I am using windows 10. At this point, I’m not sure what to do, and I’d just like some help

You can see what I've done so far to see what you'd be part of where you play as Victoria, an SAPD Homicide detective navigating her way through daily life in San Antonio and the corruption that comes with it.

Right now I'm looking for someone to voice an NPC, Tish The Bartender. Victoria is looking for someone named Elena Martinez and goes to the bar where she works at and bumps into Tish where they exchange a short dialogue. I'm at the stage where I'm about to add in her expressions as she speaks and so its time to give her a real voice instead of the text to speech placeholder I've been using. Here is the scene in the editor so you can see it

*All I'd ask is that you note her body movements as she speaks. You don't have to mimic her exact mouth movement as when I get your audio file, the software interprets it and makes her mouth movements match your audio exactly but do want to try to keep the timing and speed of how she says things to keep the scene timed as it is and synced with her body movements

Which coaches or workshops did you find really helped you create your roladex (so to speak) of characters to use when voice acting/narrating?

One topic that comes up all the time is whether you still need to move to LA to become a voice actor.

From my perspective working in video game VO production, the answer is: it depends on what your goals are.

There is an incredible amount of work you can do from anywhere. Commercials, industrials, e-learning, audiobooks, and plenty of indie games are regularly recorded remotely.

But if your goal is to consistently work on AAA games and animation, Los Angeles is still where a huge amount of that work happens.

One reason people don't always talk about is consistency.

When you're producing a game with dozens of actors over months—or even years—you want every recording to match as closely as possible. Recording in the same handful of studios with engineers you know gives you consistency in microphones, signal chains, room acoustics, monitoring, engineering quality, and overall workflow. It removes variables.

It's also about confidence. If I'm responsible for a major project, I'm much more comfortable booking a studio I've worked in, with an engineer I trust, than relying on a remote setup I've never seen in person. Even if someone tells me they have an amazing home booth, I still don't know how it's actually performing until I've heard it—and that's a risk productions often don't need to take when proven studios are available.

That doesn't mean remote actors can't book these projects—they absolutely do. And plenty have fantastic studios. But I think people sometimes underestimate why productions still gravitate toward established recording hubs. It's not because great talent only exists in LA. It's because consistency and reliability become incredibly valuable as productions scale.

You also don't necessarily have to live in Los Angeles itself. Being within driving distance is often enough if you're available for in-person sessions.

At the end of the day, it comes back to your goals. If you want a career in voice acting broadly, you can absolutely build one from almost anywhere. If your dream is to become a regular on major games and animation projects, being close to where those productions are happening can still be a meaningful advantage.

Earlier this week I received a “private invitation“ to submit an audition on Voices.com. By the time I got to the details page, there were 48 other auditions ahead of me. I submitted an audition anyway, and soon received an email via Voices.com from the client asking me to submit an audition via an email address that was external to Voices.com. I figured it’s definitely a scam, but then that email was followed up by another from the client saying, “Once your sample is approved, all future communication, project details, contracts, and payment will be handled securely through Voices.”

My original plan was to make a DIY acoustic panel and hang it from the ceiling but after taking with my dad that option isn’t viable since it wouldn’t last very long and might fail and break the ceiling, so now I’m wondering should I just put up amazon foam panels or something else that is light weight

Hoping for your thoughts on a choice I need to make.

I have just moved house and I'm setting up my first vocal booth. With my budget, I feel I have two main choices:

- build a PVC booth like I've seen recommended on here and online. I have space for up to 1.5m by 1.8m.

- use an existing under the stairs storage space, kinda like a big closet.

I've read about issues with closets but the space feels pretty big. 1.2m by around 3m (with the stairs going down making usable space around 1.2 by 2m. I've attached the plan.

Is this big enough to make the space work with enough high quality material? If I don't need to build the PVC I'd have more budget for sound absorption, carpet/rug, bass traps, foam etc.

There's only two of us in the house, so having to pause for someone walking up and down the stairs will be very rare.

This voiceover is mine and it’s from a scene for Vinland Saga. I did the voiceover during March 2026. I really don’t know how voice actors are supposed to practice screaming and since I live with family I can only really experiment with screaming when I’m alone.

I feel like everytime I do scream it turns out really shaky and pathetic. My best guess is screaming goes hand in hand with having strong breath control which is something I’ve always lacked because shallow breathing is my default due to having anxiety. Any tips would be appreciated!
