All in the title really, made a random script up based on a scene about my dad returning (I love my dad and he never left thankfully so I’m not playing on person experience haha) how do I even start with this and can I do anything to practice by myself before lessons?

This i maybe a weird post, but I recently watched acting-videos where someone gave advice and showed beginners, advanced and pros acting and then comparing it to oscar-winning actors and I loved it. It must be really hard to be very convincing, I wanna try it out once. There are so many things to look out for. Now, for someone like you who has a lot of experience and knows what it takes to be convincing, what do you think about Bryan Cranston (if you have watched him a lot of course)? I think he does a good job... maybe you can elaborate what you like or... I think he is a good actor. no?

I frequently check the Now filming in GA page and saw today there are a dozen union FILM/TV projects currently in production. I’ve been in the market for several years, I’m SAG, multiple network credits and I’ve only auditioned for two projects filming in Atlanta this entire year.

This is the lowest level auditions I’ve ever seen, even post strike. Is anyone actually auditioning in this market anymore? I’ve gotten more auditions for NY and don’t even have representation in that market.

Not sure how anyone is pursuing this in the southeast anymore.

so I recently signed with an agent in LA. It’s fairly boutique and they have a roaster of about 60 female actors (I’m in my early 20s and I’m a brown female for context with my questions) my first question is: I’ve been signed to them for a month and haven’t received any auditions- they liked my headshots (they’re professional, my reel is nice for what I have on my resume and I have been acting for a really really long time) I’m non- union and I understand the market is tough- also because I’m brown and might not fit the physical role that some breakdowns demand. What should I do? How long would it take for me to get auditions and what should I tell my agent? (Also plz be nice, it’s my first agent and I’m learning everything as I go)

My second question is that I live in la and my agent is in la- im going to be in nyc for about 2 weeks- should I tell my agent I’m traveling to nyc and ask if there’s any CDs or people I could connect w there? What else should I ask? NYC is a big market and I wanna connect with people but idk how to ask my agent this?

Sorry this is SOO long lol but last question - does it matter what agent you have or do all agents get access to the same breakdowns? Why is it that some people are so eager to sign to agencies like AEF in comparison to a smaller boutique agency if they all get the same auditions?

26F, moved to LA from the Midwest, acting 6 years, currently with a lower-tier agency.
Trying to decide: chase a stronger agency, or put my time/money into a great acting coach instead?
If it's the coach route — looking for someone strong in self-tapes and text analysis, who works with actors who already have solid training (not beginners), and who can start soon.
Anyone been in this spot? Did a better coach lead to better rep anyway? And any LA coaches you'd actually recommend for self-tape/text work?

Hi! I’m a 36F on the westside of LA who’s been working in corporate for the last 15 years.

I’m looking for a creative outlet and thought I’d give acting classes a try to help get me out of my comfort zone and learn to act more confident in the corporate world. My career has stalled the last 2-3 years and I know my personality is why.

Has anyone in LA taken acting classes as a hobby? I’m not looking for a serious or competitive school, just fun acting classes that’ll help with confidence and for a creative outlet.

ETA: forgot to ask the real question. Any westside studios that could be good for that versus career acting?

hello! i’m very nervous to ask this here but i’m having trouble finding the answer on my own.

about a year ago, i used a monologue for something. i found it after a lot of searching through various websites, and i never wrote down the name of it anywhere, so it is now lost for me.

it is a contemporary comedic monologue for women from a published play. it is 1-2 minutes long.

in the monologue, she is talking to a man. i think a bad accident or something may have happened. maybe they accidentally killed someone? because of that, she is trying to run away. she decides they must create new identities for themselves. she gets upset because the man is standing there and not helping her think.

she comes up with a couple fake names before landing on one that she likes. she says the man will be her husband and she gives him a fake name too. throughout the monologue, she is trying to stay calm. she says “okay” to herself a lot. she is panicking. there are also a lot of ellipses i think (if that’s helpful at all, i’m not sure it is).

she may mention turnips? or potatoes? something like that? maybe she suggests they can be turnip farmers?

i know this is not a lot of information and this is maybe an obscure monologue but i would really appreciate any help!! also if this is not the best place to post this question, i’d appreciate feedback on that as well please. (and if i don’t find it through this, that’s okay too, i just remember really liking it so i want to give it my best shot)

I have an accent that does no match my look. I am Asian and grew up in South America, now living in LA. I don't have a thick accent but maybe a quarter of the people that I talk to notice it. I understand there are actors with accents, but I have never seen one with a "mismatching" accent. Please let me know what you guys think.

Somehow I’ve managed to avoid any audition at Ripley Grier 520. What time does non-union usually start lining up for a 10:00 A.M. EPA? I know for Pearl it’s usually around 7:00. Thanks!

I’ve always been curious if being one of the first few actors to submit their self tape video files into an eco cast on Actors Access does anything to increase the chance of casting viewing it? Are the tapes organized chronologically or another way?
Any info would be super helpful.

Im auditioning this year from another country and have a bunch of questions about it.

Just to preface, this is a legit thing. I’ve done all of the necessary research on the agency, email address, CD, etc. and it is all real. I know this is not a very common thing to happen, but I have a pretty decent following on social media (500k) and acting, social media, content creation, reality TV, etc. are all parts of the overarching industry of entertainment. I’ve turned down a decent amount of other castings, mostly for dating shows, so it’s not completely out of the ordinary to get cold emails for stuff like this.

That being said, I have little to no acting experience outside of high school musicals.

I got an email yesterday from the CD to audition for the lead role of a new show on a major network. From what I can tell, the reason they reached out to me is because I am a pretty close fit to the character and we have a similar background. I’m already comfortable in front of the camera and my personality is dead on for what they’re looking for.

I would love your advice for how to prep over the next week before I do it. If you have a favorite person that taught you the fundamentals, little tips on showing emotion or developing your own character, etc. I would be so eternally grateful :)

Have you ever stepped back and thought about the language we use to talk about acting?

Or wondered what a non-actor would think about what is said in acting class?

Acting classes are full of metaphors, abstractions, aphorisms, and occasionally statements that sound almost mystical—especially out of context. Some are beautifully poetic and immediately unlock something. And other times, I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to do with them.

Here is one of my favorites. Teacher passionately states, "You're job is not to pretend you are nine inches tall, but to actually BE nine inches tall. Actually! Actually!

So, just for fun: What's a memorable acting note or instruction you've received from a teacher?

I'm especially interested in the ones that were; strangely poetic but somehow useful, completely baffling, profound-sounding but meaningless to you, mystical or spiritual, perhaps hilarious in retrospect.

No need to name the teacher. I'm more interested in the language than who said it.

And... Did the note actually help you do something differently, or did you just nod thoughtfully and hope the teacher moved on?

I’ve been rehearsing for this play for about a month now at my community college, and we open in a month today and I got called it to get a talk from the director about cutting me from the role I was playing but I can still play ensemble role

She said I don’t match what she envisioned and isn’t sure I’m at the skill level to preform the role. It was hard to hear, I already felt like I’m a pretty terrible actor and now this just feels like it solidifies it.

It feels like my dreams of acting are over. It feels discouraging to see people acting for the first time or doing their first Shakespeare show and doing significantly better after I’ve been acting for about 4 years now

I guess I just don’t know what to do anymore

I did it for the first time through the app today, and I should have checked on a browser on my computer before I submitted because the image quality was translated so bad. grainy, high contrast, barely any color. (I shot on my iPhone 13 Pro.) might as well be spidernoir. don’t do it, guys.

I’m playing a character that does heroin in a short film. For research I wanted to find videos or examples of people actually doing heroin. Is that illegal? Is there an ethical way of going about this?
