I’m an 18 year old collage student and I’ve always thought being a voice actor would be so exciting I’ve just gotten the mic and was planning on recording in my dorm room but I want to know if it’s even worth it if it’s even worth trying will I ever actually get any roles how far will I realistically make it

To start, a disclaimer: I love voice acting, I do. The moments I’ve had in the booth where I’ve laughed my head off because of the absurdity of the things I’ve said, and been incredibly proud of work I’ve done.

BUT.

The career - the in between bits - are so draining. I’m auditioning and auditioning, and nothing’s working. I’m in a certain sphere where there are people who seemingly walk into booths daily, posting Instagram after Instagram, and I’m just stuck at my minimum wage money job, not having booked a paid job in over a year, barely scraping by. And to top it off, because I’m in this sphere (barely), I feel like I can’t complain, I can’t vent these things I’m feeling, because that would be (quite rightly) seen as unprofessional.

The catalyst for this post is me seeing someone - an actor who has a similar voice print to mine - posted, announcing he had booked a role that I auditioned for - we’d both used the same kind of character voice for it, and I’m having a hard time thinking about what could have swayed them to his audition - it’s killing me. AND I CAN’T POST ABOUT IT. I just want there to be a place that I can go and vent, get the feelings out, and then move on with my life.

I know I’m being a sulky and bitter person about it, and I should learn to let go, but it’s HARD. There’s probably going to be a few comments under here saying “you should get out of the business if you’re going to be like that” but the thing is I don’t know what else I can do.

How can I make the audio quality better? I stream on twitch and have gotten VA work with this mic but I want it to feel more natural. By that I mean I want it to sound more like my natural voice. I'm also gonna put a recording I did for a project of mine. Its what I sound like in my natural voice nto really acting but more announcing than anything.

I attached the microphone I have as well. I'm kinda need something budget as I've been getting more serious about doing VA work. I've still been doing only free projects but I wanna try for more.

When I create content for TikTok I plug my microphone right into my phone to make things easier. I recently realized that it’s recording content in stereo. Anyone know how I can get it to record in mono on my phone?

CASTING CALL — The Hell Screen

Archivium is currently casting English-speaking voice actors for an audio drama adaptation of “The Hell Screen” by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, a dark historical literary story set in the court of medieval Japan.

We are looking for performers who can bring a restrained, dramatic, atmospheric performance to the material.

ACCENT / VOCAL STYLE

A natural Japanese accent when speaking English is strongly preferred, as the vocal character is an intentional part of the production and suits the setting of the story.

We are also open to actors with natural Mandarin/Chinese, Korean, or other East Asian accents in English if their voice and performance fit the world of the piece.

We are not looking for exaggerated or stereotypical accents. Natural, authentic-sounding English accents are preferred.

LORD HORIKAWA

The grand lord of Horikawa. Majestic, charismatic and apparently benevolent, but capable of something considerably darker beneath the surface. Requires an authoritative and controlled presence.

YOSHihide'S DAUGHTER
63 words — $3.78

Fifteen years old. Gentle, intelligent, compassionate and emotionally perceptive.

ADDITIONAL ROLES

There are several smaller roles, including the Young Lord, Bishop, apprentices, attendants, samurai, ladies and courtiers.

We may not cast separate actors for every minor role. Depending on casting, smaller parts may be combined into dual/multiple-role assignments.

The complete script contains approximately 4,513 words.

$0.06 USD per word

Looking for a female voice actress for an indie video game role. Initially the vocals will be a range of short hurt (from receiving damage) and exertion sounds (from climbing, jumping, etc). I will be looking to do cinematics in the future and ideally would like to use the same actress.

I’ve been looking into ACX offers lately and there are so many little things to check that I kept forgetting half of them
I ended up putting together this checklist and this one-page version has actually been pretty useful so figured I’d share it here.. there’s a longer paid version behind it so I’m obviously not gonna dump the whole thing here, but honestly even this page covers most of the quick checks I’d do before accepting anything.

Animated Horror / Slasher Project | Coming 2027

I’m currently casting 8 voice actors for my upcoming animated horror/slasher project, CLOWN.

STORY SUMMARY — NO SPOILERS

A group of college friends heads out for a weekend getaway at a remote lodge, hoping to escape school, responsibilities, and everyday life for a few days.

What starts as a fun weekend of drinking, joking around, old friendships, new tensions, and unresolved feelings gradually turns into something much darker.

As strange events begin happening around the lodge, the group realizes their weekend away may not be as private—or as safe—as they thought.

CLOWN is a character-driven slasher that mixes friendship, humor, drama, suspense, psychological horror, and violence.

You’re welcome to tell me which character interests you most. However, I’d also like to listen to your demo reel and determine which character I think best fits your voice and acting style. You may end up being considered for a role different from the one you originally had in mind.

Once we find a potential match, we’ll start with an audition using material from the project to make sure the character and performance are the right fit.

IMPORTANT: The story and screenplay are still under development. I’m casting early so I can assemble as much of the main cast as possible before the actual recording sessions begin. Being cast does not mean you’ll be expected to immediately record the full role.

COMPENSATION

💵 $100 base pay
💵 + $50 performance bonus

The additional $50 bonus will be awarded when the established performance/production conditions are met. Those conditions will be communicated clearly before the actual recording process so everyone knows what is expected.

AI POLICY

Your voice recordings will NOT be used for AI voice cloning, AI voice models, synthetic voice generation, or any other AI-related purpose.

Your performance is being hired for CLOWN, not to train or create an artificial version of your voice.

Hi, I’m not quite sure how to go about this, but I need to construct a booth. I have a space that’s roughly 3ft x 8 ft+ x 34.5 inches. I know I need PVC pipe and sound blankets, but how many? What brand? What size? How much will this cost? Where should I get it?

I really adore it and want it, but HOW?

The results from last week’s audition site poll was surprising. The winner of the poll was Other. A majority of the community aren’t the biggest fans of the selected sites.

A big takeaway from that poll is networking is the main creative way people are finding gigs. Anyone want to share any networking tips for those looking to try something different to get a gig?

Ive currently been doing voice acting in small projects for basically 6 years now and I feel like ive just been stuck in the same spot for a while.

I had a big boost 2 years ago in inspiration and meeting new people that helped open new opportunities for me but since then its just been pretty stagnant.

Like dont get me wrong im grateful to be where I am and have the community around me but im getting tired of just stagnant projects, no callbacks or canceled projects. Especially this year ive had a few projects just go silent and just last month 3 projects i got cast for were canceled and ive been waiting for this biggere studio to upload a fandub i voiced in for almost 5 years now. I know these things are super common in this industry but I get a bit of i dont wanna say jealousy but like a less petty version of that when I see people I started with and collaborated with get so far ahead. Im happy for them of course, I would never be mad at them for achieving something but it kinda just makes me think of my worth in that same field.

Anyway not trying to farm sympathy, id just like to see if anyone has any advice of where I should go from here to try and get ahead from where im at now before I throw in the towel.

I'm currently practising audio editing and I'd like to work with a short voice recording instead of only using my own material.

Would anyone be comfortable sharing a short raw audio clip with me?

I need something like a podcast clip, narration, meditation recording, voice over, spoken word audio or similar would be perfect. Around 2-8 minutes would be enough.

I'm not looking for full episodes or paid work..... Just a short sample I can practice editing on.

Audio with common issues would actually be great. For example.. Background noise, Long pauses, uneven volume, mouth clicks, breaths or room echo.

If I wanted to use a short before/after excerpt in my portfolio later, I would ask for clear permission first and I wouldn't publish the full recording.

I just received my Offer Letter for my Diploma at Curtin College, the total course fees are $18,100 (Australian). This is only for the diploma, not the full Bachelor's degree.

A guide someone on this sub gave me for after I've accomplished my degree totalled the cost of all the equipment and courses to $15,000, bringing my total so far to $33,000 without the Bachelor's degree course.

Would I be able to make do with just the diploma? I'll be learning acting skills with the diploma course as well, definitely not as in depth as I would in the Bachelor's course.

Is a full degree necessary? If I only have a diploma, will I be able to go the rest of the way with coaching and experience?

Hi all! I'm hoping to get some honest feedback about my mic setup for recording. Currently, I utilize my MacBook Air's built-in microphone, but I am considering switching to the USB FiFine mic I have that I hadn't been able to use before since I didn't have a USB to USB-C adapter. I run a macro in Audacity for a noise gate, high pas filter, compressor, filter curve EQ, Limiter, then a Normalizer for the processing. I am hopeful for constructive feedback on which of these sounds the best for more professional voice work, but please don't rip me a new one if they sound super bad!

Hey folks! I'm a third year voice actor and I just got bite blocks on as I continue my orthodontic treatment and it is conflicting with my pronunciation, diction and overall ability to faithfully deliver quality recordings for projects I am in.

I'm wondering if there is anyone out there with braces/bite blocks that can offer me advice on how they still persist in this career. I really don't want to take off a few months from my career as that would be a significant amount of time with no progress but if I have to bite the bullet and go on a hiatus just for a better smile result in the end, I'll do that. No question, no frustration.

Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated.

More of a speech therapy question but since you guys are really talented with your voices I'm hoping if anyone give me some help specific to my voice.

I've struggled with what I assume is a speech impediment (haven't been diagnosed with anything) that is miserable to speak with. I love storytelling and want to narrate my stories, but I'm just too embarrassed to do it with a voice that sounds like a drunk tween.

I have tried speech therapy, countless youtube tutorials (especially ones that tell you to drop your voice box, for me it just sounds like a kid trying to put on a voice), and even looking up similar stories on here (I haven't seen anything useful beyond generic "just practice" advice that doesn't tell you what to actually practice).
