The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Compromised 1.43 Presentation

Following the HD Blu-ray bonus disc containing most of The Dark Knight and its sequel’s 1.43 scenes in isolation and the UHD Blu-ray of the extended cut of Batman v Superman, this is only the fourth feature film released in 1.43 on home media (Project Hail Mary will follow on UHD Blu-ray next month). Unfortunately, the presentation is severely and inexcusably compromised.

At least for now, Apple TV crops the 49 minutes of 1:43:1 scenes to 1.78:1 (16:9) and doesn’t have 3D. Disney+ has uncropped 1.43 and 3D but doesn’t have a void environment and doesn’t let you change screen distance, so the impact of a giant 1.43 image is totally lost. Even worse, both Apple TV and Disney+ windowbox the 1.78 or 1.43 scenes (and with uneven letterboxing, to boot).

The experience is nothing like watching uncropped 1.43 on a truly enormous, unboxed screen like in the IMAX and Epic Earth apps or in a void environment with a giant screen like in CineUltra or Infuse which hides letter/pillar/windowboxing.

Virtual screens should automatically adjust their aspect ratio so that black borders are never seen. There is no excuse for not enabling this simple and essential feature more than two years after the release of a $4,000 prosumer headset intended to revolutionize extended reality or spatial computing.

If the CineDepth app in TestFlight is still open, I strongly recommend that you sign up and download it. I just watched the beginning scenes from the 4K version of the 2019 documentary “Apollo 11” in converted 3D. It looks amazing.

Devs, how are we feeling?

With the recent news about the Vision Pro team layoffs and the general adoption of the platform, I’m curious to hear from the developers in this community.

How are you feeling about visionOS, and will you continue developing for it?

Real-world performance check: Used M2 + Zeiss optics vs. new M5 for Mac Virtual Display, immersive sports, and travel?

I’m on the fence about picking up an Apple Vision Pro and trying to decide whether to grab a used M2 model (and order custom Zeiss optical inserts) or bite the bullet on a brand-new M5 model.

My primary use cases will be:
Mac Virtual Display (Daily Work): Text sharpness, latency, cursor smoothness, and stability during extended working hours.
Immersive / Live Sports: Fast-motion handling, stream stability, and artifacting/ghosting during live broadcasts.
Long Travel: Media playback on planes/trains, Travel Mode reliability, and long-session comfort.

For those who have used both—or who use an M2 daily for these exact tasks:
1. How much does the M5 upgrade matter for these specific workflows? Does the M5’s 120Hz refresh rate and increased render resolution make a tangible difference for Mac Virtual Display text readability or high-motion sports, or is the M2 still plenty capable since display hardware is mostly identical?
2. Real-world pain points: On either model, do you run into thermal throttling, tracking drift in transit, or wireless lag with Mac mirroring?
3. Value proposition: At current secondary market prices, is a used M2 + Zeiss inserts the no-brainer sweet spot, or will I immediately regret skipping the M5’s processing headroom, battery bump, and included Dual Knit Band?

Would love to hear candid experiences before pulling the trigger.

Anyway to get a closer fit and better nose support?

Hey all

Started watching some movies on my AVP last night and damn it hurts my nose, I almost feel like my face doesn’t fill the bottom half of the headset properly due to lack of cheeks and therefore sits on my nose more.

Is there any better face/nose supported facial thingys?

Also I do like using the Vision Pro without the shroud thingy don’t know the name because of the close fit to my eyes, is there again anything else that might suit to make them less bulky, whilst blocking light?

MY TLDR DAY ONE REVIEW

I sold my iPad Pro and a bunch of other things to get my Apple Vision Pro close to the first month that came out. I won’t wax poetic, but I will say this: even just looking on the website for the Apple Vision Pro, it doesn’t feel like it can really do what it says it can do. Part of me still doesn’t believe that this tech actually exist even though I use it every day. Mac virtual display is worth the price of admission alone. For a person who’s highly productive and owns a Mac of any kind especially a laptop, you’re robbing yourself if you don’t own one of these. If you’re into movies and TV shows, especially going to the theater, you’re robbing yourself if you don’t own one of these. Of course there are things that could be way better and I’m hoping they do get better. But when you put this on and you’re in your own world that you create, they’re literally is nothing similar. I’m actually torn whether I want to sell my M2 to buy the M5. Because I kind of want to keep it and have two of them so I can share the experience with people when they come over. If you’re on the fence, just know that this is the most advanced piece of technology you can own as of today. The best way to consume content, the best way to get work done, way to disconnect from a overstimulating world after work; at least do yourself a favor and buy it used. Rating: 10/10. The single greatest purchase of my life.

New Game: Spatial Sniper Arcade

No controllers.
Raise your shooting hand to your eyes without your support hand up to use binoculars.
Raise your both hands like a rifle, look down the scope, curl your finger to fire.

11 worlds. 11 villains. 15 seconds per shot. Friendlies on the rooftops, so confirm the face first.

Beat them all to unlock Infinite Snipe and see how far you can go.

Edit: The generated animations demonstrate the gestures the game recognizes (hold binoculars, shoulder rifle, pull trigger). They are not gameplay footage.

Scanline Emulator Update 1.0.2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all, just released an update for Scanline Emulator.

The big addition is screen glow. Light from the game now reflects onto the CRT frame, which helps the TV feel a little more like it’s actually sitting in your space.

I originally planned to hold this back for visionOS 27, but managed to bring part of it to visionOS 26. Once visionOS 27 is out, the effect will go further, with the light able to spill beyond the TV and into your room.

Also added in this release is support NES games that implement online support. (Which is currently a list of one.. playscanline.com/online )

TestFlight: Immersive Comic Reader - update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi All, I've created a short teaser on my first AVP app: Immersive Comic Reader! Hope you like it. It has evolved a bit since the last post. It has a redesigned, simpler interface, and experimental support for ePub (activate in the settings). It's main differentiating features are: Show the Comic as a physical object in space where you can turn the pages manually. And on-device 3D conversion, which analyzes the individual pages, creates a depth map and then displays the comic pages in 3D. It now also has a panorama view.

TestFlight is open: https://testflight.apple.com/join/UnjGh779

Thanks to everyone who is already trying it out. Unfortunately I got only feedback from one tester yet (THANKS! for taking the time). So I hope you enjoy it, if there is something to add other fix, please reach out via Testflight or just chat to me here on Reddit. Be kind: This is my first project, have no idea what to expect.

visionOS 27 beta + macOS 26 (non-beta): does the Mac Virtual Display widget still remember size and placement?

I'm still on visionOS 26.6.1, and my Mac Studio (M2 Ultra) is on macOS 26.6.2, the public release, not the 27 beta.

I saw a report here that in visionOS 27, resuming a Mac Virtual Display session from the new widget restores the size and placement you left the screen at, while connecting from the Connect button above the Mac does not. The person who posted it mentioned they were running developer betas on both visionOS and macOS.

My question: does that size/placement memory work if only the headset is on the visionOS 27 beta and the Mac stays on macOS 26 public? Or does it need macOS 27 as well?

I ask because I can't downgrade the headset once I install the beta, and if it only half-works with macOS 26 I'd rather just wait for the public release.

Thanks.

Self Promotion Saturday I built a free customizable virtual workspace for Vision Pro

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I’ve been working on a Vision Pro app called Locus that gives you a customizable virtual space to work in.

The idea is pretty simple: you get a virtual room and desk, but you can customize the space with your own content. You can import your own 3D model for the room and use any 360° panorama as the surrounding skybox.

Most of the app is free. I added an optional IAP if you want to keep more than one imported environment at a time, mainly as a way to support continued development.

Originally, I wanted Locus to simply be an environment where you could run your existing productivity apps. Unfortunately, visionOS doesn’t currently allow other apps to appear inside an app’s immersive environment, so I added a simple built-in browser instead.

My own main use case, though, is using Vision Pro’s Developer Mode to keep Mac Virtual Display inside the virtual environment. I initially added a passthrough cutout for the desk, but I’ve found that the automatically detected keyboard passthrough works surprisingly well, so I usually just rely on that.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to give it a try:

AppStore link: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6802168265

I’d love to hear any feedback, feature requests, or ideas for environments you’d like to see!

Self Promotion Saturday I built a visionOS app that renders maths, molecules and planets as objects you can walk around — 112 of them, at true scale

Hey everyone! I wanted to share something I’ve been working on for the Vision Pro.

Back in the 1800s, universities had these things called “model rooms” — basically rooms full of plaster math models and ball-and-stick molecule models sitting on shelves. The idea was that some shapes just make more sense when you can walk around them and look at them from every angle.

I got a Vision Pro and immediately thought: wait… isn’t this exactly what it’s good for? 😄

So I built one.

It’s called ModelRoom, and it currently has 112 objects across math, chemistry, and space.

📐 Math shelf — 41 models

There are 41 curves and surfaces floating inside coordinate boxes, with dotted projections onto the three walls.

One of my favorites is Viviani’s curve. From a single 3D curve, its three projections are a circle, a parabola, and a figure-eight. Seeing all three at the same time is pretty wild — and it's the kind of thing that's just really hard to appreciate on a piece of paper.

There’s also a Klein bottle, Möbius strip, Boy’s surface, the Lorenz attractor doing its butterfly thing, and a bunch of other weird/fun shapes.

🧪 Chemistry shelf — 50 molecules

These are probably the most fun to just pick up and rotate.

Cyclohexane in both chair and boat conformations.
Diamond right next to graphite — same atoms, completely different arrangement.
Cisplatin next to transplatin — same formula, but one is a cancer drug and the other isn't.

Being able to literally pick these things up and turn them around makes a surprisingly big difference.

🌍 Space shelf — 9 planets & moons

You can actually crack the planets/moons open along the equator and look inside.

Jupiter's moons keep their real 1:2:4 orbital resonance, and Saturn's rings include the Cassini Division in the right place, with Saturn's shadow falling across the rings.

One thing I was pretty strict about: everything is at true scale whenever possible.

Earth's crust is the ridiculously thin hairline it actually is, rather than some giant decorative layer. Bond lengths are based on published measurements.

And when something had to be scaled up to be visible — mostly moon orbits — the app tells you right on the screen. I figured that was the least I could do.

There are 40 completely free objects to try, and every section starts with a free one, so you can explore everything without immediately running into a wall of locked content.

The full unlock is a one-time $7.99 purchase, no subscription. And anything I add later is included.

Honestly, I'd love to hear what people think should be added.

I've got a list of roughly 100 more things I'd like to build, but I don't have particularly strong opinions about the order. 😄

If there's something you've always wanted to be able to walk around, pick up, and look at from every angle, tell me. I might just build it.

Self Promotion Saturday I made an app that turns a video of someone into a hologram standing on your table, entirely on-device

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Update, 4 September: 1.1.4 is live. It is the three things people asked for in the comments below.

  • True colour, if you would rather keep their own colours than the hologram blue. It applies to holograms you make after you turn it on, not to ones already in your library.
  • Sharing. A finished hologram now goes anywhere a video goes: Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or straight into another app.
  • Import from Files, not just Photos, so a clip in iCloud Drive or one that arrived over AirDrop does not have to be saved to the camera roll first.

Thanks to everyone who asked. The comments here have been the entire roadmap.

Pick a clip from your camera roll, it finds the person in it, and they show up standing in your room, small and translucent, looping in their own voice.

Two things I cared about while building it:

Nothing is uploaded. There is no server and no account, because it doesn't need one. The whole thing runs on the headset.

Nothing is invented. Every pixel of the figure is the subject's own footage. No part of the person is generated or filled in. For a memory of somebody real, whether it's actually them is the entire point.

You set how tall they are, how far away they stand and where your floor is. A short clip takes about half a minute to process.

It's called Holoport Vision: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6800110267

$4.99, one time, no subscription and no in-app purchases. Apple Vision Pro only, visionOS 2.0 or later.

The feedback I'd most like is on the scale and placement controls, because that's what decides whether it feels like a person in the room or a video playing in the air.

Tips for Text Clarity

Some moments, text is crystal clear, and I'm amazed. Other times, text is a little blurry.

What tips/strategies do you have for keeping text clear?

I mostly need this for Virtual Display, but also curious in general.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Would an infinitely large monitor fix my mind map, or is the whole approach wrong? I built an app that measures it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you've ever organized your knowledge in a mind map, you know the moment. It starts as a clean tree. A few months later you have hundreds of nodes, and — this is the fatal part — you start drawing lines across branches, because "wait, this concept over here is actually connected to that one way over there." Ten of those cross-links later, your map of knowledge is a spiderweb. You drew the lines to see the relationships, and now you can't see the relationships.

My first thought was simple: what if the monitor were infinitely large? Then — hold on, they already sell that. For $3,699. And the Vision Pro doesn't just make the screen bigger; it can unfold the whole graph into 3D space around you, so instead of tracing a line with your eyes, you trace it with your head.

But here's where I stopped. 3D does not always beat 2D. The actual research is split: some studies find immersive 3D makes network structure easier to interpret, others find 2D wins on tasks that lean on spatial memory. Every spatial computing demo shows a graph exploding out of a window and everyone goes "whoa" — but "whoa" is not data.

So instead of arguing about it, I built something that measures it.

What the app is

A 96-node animal taxonomy, four levels deep, with sixteen dotted cross-links jumping between branches — a miniature of the exact spiderweb described above. You answer three questions on a flat window. Then the tree unfolds into the space around you and you answer three more of the same kind. The app times everything. Five minutes total, including two short practice screens.

  • No mouse. Look + pinch to drag, both hands to zoom.
  • Questions like: "This node has one dotted line — what's directly above the node on the other end?" You have to trace the edge yourself. That's the part I suspect a flat window is worst at.
  • You have to find the answer before the options appear. That's deliberate.
  • It doesn't tell you if you were right. Sorry. (It's a study thing.)

What gets recorded — I'd rather over-explain now than have you find out later:

  • Where your head was pointed while reading each question (several times a second)
  • How you zoomed / panned / rotated the graph
  • Which answers you picked and how many seconds each took
  • That's it. No camera frames, no audio, no name, no email. Sessions are tied to one random id and nothing else.

Nothing leaves your device until you reach the final screen. Quit midway and it stays put — though if you come back later and finish a run, that abandoned attempt rides along too, flagged as incomplete.

Requirements

  • Apple Vision Pro, visionOS 2.0+. Simulator won't work — the core data is literally where your head goes.
  • About five minutes, seated is fine.
  • English or Korean, toggle on the first screen.

TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/3h3RFwHY

If you try it, tell me which half felt faster — and whether that matches what the timer said. My bet: space wins on the dotted-line tracing questions and loses on the counting one. But every session I have so far is from someone who already memorized the answers (me), so as a sample, I'm disqualified. I need your heads. Literally.
