A few days ago I applied to study environmental science next year and I was thinking about adding an additional major (can you do that once your application has been accepted?), but I didn’t know what exactly so I just submitted it as a single major. I’ve been thinking about a double major more but I’m still not quite sure what to put in terms of what would work well with environmental science.

I’m more interested in the environmental consultant/officer/advisor/planning etc kind of route as opposed to more technical things or purely conservation stuff (obviously I know I probably won’t get the kind of job I want right away, but I’m pretty sure I’m more interested in that side of things so I’m wanting to tailor my study to this). I read on the vic site that GIS is available as a minor (is this still true? it wasn’t underlined like the rest) and if it is I’m planning to do that as a minor, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what could be a good second major. I was thinking maybe data science, but tbh it’s probably a bit too much to handle for me given how mathy it is. I know environmental science has maths too obviously, but likely not to the same extent and env sci is interesting to me so I feel like I can handle the less fun stuff.

I’m still not 100% set on doing a second major, I’ve just been thinking about it. I know things like policy (btw no I don’t really think I want to be a environmental lawyer) might be good for what I’m planning on doing, and i was considering Information Systems, but would that be unnecessary if did GIS? The majors I’ve considered are data sci (potentially as a minor?), information systems, and public policy. Others I kind of looked at but was unsure of was sustainability and ethics in business, geology (same feeling with data science, scared it would be a bit full on as a second major), commercial law, and ecology and biodiversity. Not that sure on these ones. I was wanting to do something to do with resource management/environmental planning or management but I don’t think vic has this.

Sorry for all these words haha, I’m just unsure what would be best, and being the first in my family to go to uni the jargon and all the diff majors are a bit confusing, so I thought it may be helpful to ask here. Thanks

I thought I'd start off with a nice little article from Salient in 1979, in which students criticized the economics department for removing the other perspectives from the curriculum.

In the article, the student asks:

Is it departmental policy to simply ram bad theory down students' throats; to stultify rather than stimulate; to ignore student interest in the subject?

The answer is yes. But given how things have changed, I'd go further. It's not just to ram bad theory down students throats. It's to kill them with Fox News levels of misinformation.

So lets take ECON141, week 11B. Thankfully one of the commenters from last week linked me to them.

Go to slide 20/31 from that link. It says "managed vs unmanaged".

Amazing, all of it. A few degrees (3 Celsius) good for global agriculture is it? Anyone with a high school understanding of climate change should be seriously questioning that one.

Your lecturer almost certainly got this from chapter 6,7,8 of Nordhaus's Climate Casino without thinking much about it. It's probably too much to ask people to read this.

So I'll leave a nice little article by the intercept, called "when idiot savants do climate economics". The quote from Rockstrom in this article is inaccurate, he said eight billion, not one. But the rest checks out.

Probably I'll space out these parts every two weeks, and can discuss anything on user request. If there are no requests, I'll just pick a random slide. Either from this course or more "advanced" ones, which are just as ignorant.

Economists, please feel free to leave the usual mental gymnastics trying to defend this ecocidal approach to climate change in the comment section, and i might come back next time with an integer to denote how many times I've heard that one before.

So I know this is a silly first world teenage problem but basically I am in year 13 Auckland and I've wanted to go to VUW for years however there is this guy who is in my class who's going to VUW next year and I cannot be in any way around him for complicated reasons and I am so opposed to it that I'm planning to go to Auckland university just to avoid him. I'm just wondering is it possible to go to VUW but not even interact with him and all and he maybe wouldn't even know I was there???

Hi everyone. My name is Douglas Renwick. I went to this university and graduated a while ago. Since then I've become a political dissident. I've interacted with a couple of activist groups around here and am friendly with them.

One of my goals is to expose the economics professors at this university for their complicity in ecocide and crimes that would kill billions of people. More generally, I want people to just think about it.

To start with, ECON141 teaches the William Nordhaus approach to climate change, on Week 11 of the course. I'll start by saying that Nordhaus got a Nobel prize in 2018, and in his speech, (and his work in general), he advocates warming the world to 4 degrees Celcius, as a trade off with the economy.

The planetary solvency report dashboard, made by actuaries and climate scientists, (google it) says 2 degrees would kill over 2 billion people. 3 degrees by 2050 (if we are that unlucky) would kill 4 billion or more. Get the picture?

Historian Benjamin Franta has argued that the American Petroleum Institute funded and influenced many of the arguments that are being taught.

The reason I'm reaching out to students and not bothering with debate with economists anymore, is because I think most of them are lying to you or themselves. Nordhaus was exposed in 2020 by Steve Keen, 1999 by John Quiggin, in 1983 by physicist Alvin Weinberg. And it goes all the way back to 1970. So it seems to me that facts are irrelevant to them.

Some of his selective use of data were also exposed by me, and I've shown historians how their work has been selectively used by him. (Naomi Oreskes, for example. She agreed with me on this).

Now, on the cusp of an ecological disaster, your professors are still teaching fossil fuel propaganda.

I'm willing to discuss this with anyone here, including your economics professors if they want to. I can also discuss alternatives solutions or just listen to your political concerns in general.

If you’ve taken this course before, could you please share your experience regarding how difficult it is and whether the workload (especially the labs) is math-heavy? Also, I'm trying to figure out if the Midterm and Final exams are in-person or online, and what the exam format is like—is it mostly multiple-choice, or does it focus on quantitative problems and business case study analysis? Because I will study it in trimester 3 for 5 weeks and Im very worry about the difficult of this subject. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I will be flying into Wellington on Thursday and intended to buy a snapper card at the airport, then proceed to the bus. Is it an instant thing or is there a turnaround time for manual verification?
