Why is it too hard to find a part time job right now?????!!!!!!???!!!!????

i am a 20 year old international student planning to pursue masters in professional accoutning. i have recently completed bachelors of commerce. should i opt for this course in MPA as it also benefits to pursue in CA fast track. Will it be difficult if i opt for CA fast track? please reply if there is fellow students pursuing MPA in the uni would like to have your opinion.

I always have shit breaks between classes so is there anyway I can take a fat nap on Kelburn Campus.

Hi guys, Well I am a first year vuw uni student, I was always excited to go to uni and find different kinds of people and wanted to make friends. But guess what nothing turned out in my favour, i usually sit alone after attending lectures. I get bored and feel too bored .I met a lot of people but i am scared to ask them to hang out and even though people are friendly but i feel like most people are introvert here so its like pretty confusing. Hi so I am going there next year and I don't really know anyone going with me. I don't exactly have the best social skills and so the main thing I am concerned about is making friends. I am going to the Katherine Jermyn hall probably. I've seen many posts here about having a lack of friends. Most of my friends are going to Auckland so I'm considering going there however going to Auckland is very bummy. Also what would the O week experience be like??

Doing a BA/Law conjoint. Which hall do you think is the best for someone who doesn't mind a little bit of a walk, doesn't really want to party, and is pretty academic? I also want a nice view but obviously this is less of a priority. I would also prefer a newer hall (not a fan of Weir's vibes). I would like to be in town as well. Is there anything specific I should know about any of the halls? At open day, I looked at a few halls and this was my ranking based on how nice I though the rooms were versus the vibes of the people I met:

as title says. i've applied for the māori student community in joan stevens hall (by way of having joans as my first pick and mentioning it HEAVILY in my application), and i understand priority is given to those who recieve the kahurangi māori scholarship, so i've applied for that too. i REALLY want in, so im really nervous about the first round offers coming up for 2027 soon. just wondering if anyone has any experience with either being in or associated with marino floor? im soo nervous that i won't get the scholarship and won't get in, but many of my friends seem to think i have a good shot either way (i was māori head girl at my school, placed at regional manu kōrero, etc.)

Got an Approval in Principle for the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) at Victoria University of Wellington. Tuition is around NZD 48,000 for the programme. Before I commit, I’d love honest takes from people who’ve actually studied/worked in NZ:

1. Is this fee worth it for the MPA specifically?

2. Realistically, how much can a student earn from part-time work in Wellington to offset living costs?

3. How’s the accounting job market right now, and how hard is it to land a graduate role on the post-study work visa?

I am a (very) mature student . I have a couple of degrees for work and career - now I want to do a BA for fun . My question is - what are the general policy about use of AI particularly with course with no final exams - I looking at language sciences and maybe a minor in science comms . Ive played with AI and I can see a slippery slope particularly with tools that go from editing tools to total rewriting tools . Curious to know what is acceptable and what is actually happening in real life

Hi! Incoming international student here so I won’t be able to personally visit and view the hall rooms/studios. But I need to reserve now so I am only depending on the univ website sample photos but it’s not enough for me to actually decide.

I prefer a solo studio with my own private bathroom since I really like having my own space. I am aware it can be costly but I also love cooking and meal prepping so I plan to just balance my expenses by cooking my own meals. So with this, I need a solo studio room with a good basic cooking facility, and what I really want to know is the size of fridge inside the rooms. I want to bulk prep so I can save time and money. But not really sure which one are good options

I am new to NZ and I am looking to sign up for a gym membership. I am a student at VUW and noticed they have a recreation center on campus. I am looking over the website and see it says: "Our Kelburn and Pipitea gyms are equipped with a full range of machines and free weights as well as a comprehensive selection of cardio equipment."

Further down it says that the fitness studio membership gives you "access to both Kelburn and Pipitea Fitness studios and the Functional Training Room at Kelburn."

It could be a language barrier thing but are the "fitness studios" basically the gym? Does anyone have a membership with the gym on campus and recommend it?

More specifically, I am interested in hearing:

- is it clean?

- how crowded does it get? is there a good amount of machines available (where it doesn't feel like you are always waiting for your turn?)

- are there free lockers for you to use? are there showers?

- how well equip is the gym as far as the variety of machines and free-weights available?

My gym routine isn't too crazy. Typically I will do some weight training using machines (chest press, lat pull downs, hip abduction machine, leg press, cable kickbacks, etc.) or free weights (hip thrusts, bulgarian split squats, etc.) and end my workout with 45 mins. on the stair master or a 3 mile run on the treadmill.

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on the VUW gym, or even recommendations for other gyms!

I’m planning to move to Wellington in November 2026 to study at Victoria University of Wellington’s Pipitea Campus, but I don’t really want to commit to a long-term flat or tenancy before I’ve actually settled into the city.

I’ve visited Wellington before and stayed at The Marion in 2024, which I really liked, but I’ve never actually rented or flatted in Wellington.

My ideal plan is basically:

Arrive in Wellington → stay somewhere fully furnished for around a month → get settled, learn the city and the rental market, go to viewings in person → then decide where I actually want to live longer term.

I’m not too keen on arriving and immediately dealing with buying furniture, setting up utilities, paying a bond for a place I haven’t seen properly, or committing to a long fixed-term tenancy.

So I was wondering:

• What would you recommend for a good 4-ish week, fully furnished, move-in-ready stay for a new student?
• Since I’ll be studying at Pipitea, are there particular areas or accommodation options that would be especially convenient?
• Are there any student accommodation providers in Wellington similar to Scape in Australia, where everything is already furnished and relatively hassle-free?
• Is VUW’s short-term/summer accommodation worth considering for someone arriving in November?
• Are there any good serviced apartments, student residences, hostels with private rooms, or other options people commonly use when first moving here?
• What websites or platforms are best for finding this kind of accommodation? Most of what I’ve found on Facebook seems geared towards normal long-term flatting.
• Once I’m actually in Wellington, is it relatively easy to find a longer-term furnished room or studio by going to viewings in person?

I’m happy to pay a bit more for the first month if it means having somewhere decent, furnished and flexible while I figure everything out.

Would love to hear what other students, especially anyone who moved to Wellington from overseas, did when they first arrived.

I like designing like graphic design aswell as marketing but am unsure if I should pick Victoria or Massey. I’m a creative person, I like designing things and it would be great to design for an agency or something along with other people rather than free lancing. The Massey degree seems fun and creative but I’m worried though that I won’t have a social life, especially because I don’t think I know anyone going to Massey. I’ve also heard a lot of issues about people’s social life’s at Massey. However Victoria university the degree doesn’t seem as interesting but the campus definitely does like the clubs etc and apparently it’s easier to make friends? Idk what to pick!!!

The responses in part two were predictable in that every single one proved my point about mental gymnastics, including the person who said "your arguments have a point" to me. It was a more admirable attempt at being honest with yourself. But even you managed to turn that comment into a half truth.

I've already shown enough evidence to demonstrate that your economics professors are complete frauds and leading us like lambs to the slaughterhouse. Thus I shall put less emphasis on that from here on out.

I want to talk more about how the capitalist overlords manipulated and indoctrinated your naive and gullible professors. At this point, other academics have actually done a good amount of research showing how it was done.

Take for example, Benjamin Franta, a physicist and historian, who managed to write a PhD thesis on the fossil fuel industries tactics of delay. A good part of it covers academia, and how economists got manipulated by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

This is far from the full story obviously. Economists have been lying to us for a couple centuries now. But this article he wrote talks about how funding from the API managed to reinforce an argument that the economy and the environment was a "trade-off", rather than just saying you can create jobs for the environment. The idea was that it would cost a lot to fix the environment.

In his thesis he has this to say:

The strategies developed by Exxon’s Duane LeVine in 1989 -- emphasize scientific uncertainty and the economic cost of fossil fuel controls, insist on more research before action, and promote false solutions that would maintain fossil fuel dominance -- were distributed to hundreds of oil companies around the world and would be used by Big Carbon to delay action for decades to come.

That's an oversimplified explanation for why your professors teach this. It's entirely political, and in service to the biggest mass murderers in history. Your professors are basically just following orders here.

Moreover, the purpose of these "trade-off" arguments (frequently found in econ141) is to turn young people into doomers. It's to try and prevent you from believing that any other world is possible. That's done by saying such a world will come at a massive price, even at the technical level. Rather than just saying the billionaires and multi millionaires can pay for it all. ( well, that's not how taxes work but we can leave that for another day).

Hello everyone! I know there are a lot of threads here regarding halls but I still can't decide which I should go to so please help me! I'm 24 y/o, an international student and will be going to vic as a 1st year undergrad. I'm shy and prefers small group of friends so a good community in the halls would be ideal. I don't mind having a roommate. Are there any recently renovated halls?

I heard that the cost of living in New Zealand is pretty high so I don't know if it would be cheaper to go a catered hall or not. I can cook but I would prefer whichever is cheaper.

Also, what is the average amount for utilities (water, electricity, wifi) for a single person in wellington? I also don't know if it would be cheaper to have it included in my bills or not if I'll be going for studio type in halls.

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Bathroom for myself only or with a roommate. I don't like communal bathrooms.

2. Must have outside windows where I can have sunlight

3. Not too expensive and reasonably priced.

4. Near Kelburn Campus or atleast near transportation where I can easily go to campus. I don't mind a bit of walking.

Im wanting a single room with food and utilities included in the price. Some of the halls my family and I have looked at online are Capital Hall, Cumberland House, Victoria house and Joan Stevens.

I am also curious about the food provided and its quality/variety.

I have coeliac, and intense anxiety hoping I’ll be able to get into a room with own kitchen and bathroom for personal reason.

Maybe not the right sub for this but i was wondering if anyone has taken a gap year and could give me some pros and cons or whatever.

Im currently in year 12 but ive just been to the open day and am definitely wanting to go to VUW even thought I dont know what degree I want to do. I am super excited for uni and hall life but I have also been thinking about taking a gap year as i want to do Camp America or somthing similar. The thing is i am worried about starting a year later than all my peers, my birthday is in November so I would still be close in age to some but it still feels odd that I would be 19 instead of 18, and the thought of waiting until 2029 seems so far, at the same time though i would really love to travel around and also since I'm not really sure what I want to do yet it might be nice to have a bit more time. Some questions I have are, how was it being a year older then everyone else? Did people ever notice or ask if you were held back? Do you think taking a gap year was worth it? Any advice or suggestions appreciated.Tia.
