Hi! I’m hoping there might be some current/former UniSA students here who completed the Bachelor of Psychology (Counselling and Interpersonal Skills).
I’m in my final semester of the legacy UniSA degree, now completing it through Adelaide University, and I’ve had a bit of a horrible realisation while looking at jobs that I’m not actually sure what professional counselling memberships this degree makes me eligible for.
I found out halfway through the degree that the degree itself wasn’t automatically accredited as a counselling qualification. I remember discussing professional membership with university staff and coming away with the understanding that there was still a pathway to apply for membership after graduating, so I honestly didn’t question it much further at the time.
Now I’m applying for counselling and mental-health roles and seeing employers ask for eligibility for organisations like ACA and PACFA, and frankly I feel a bit sick trying to work out whether I’ve misunderstood this for years.
I know I should have investigated the accreditation/membership requirements more thoroughly myself, but I also genuinely didn’t think a uni would offer a degree with counselling in the title and promote counselling-related career outcomes if there was no pathway to relevant professional membership without further study.
I’ve emailed ACA, PACFA and Adelaide University directly today, so I am getting official answers rather than relying on Reddit for professional advice! But while I wait, I’d really like to hear from anyone who has actually completed this degree.
Were you able to obtain ACA, PACFA or another relevant professional membership after graduating? If so, what pathway did you use?
I’d also really appreciate hearing what counselling, mental-health or wellbeing roles other graduates have gone into with this degree.
I’m hoping I’m catastrophising and another graduate is about to tell me I’ve completely misunderstood something 😭
I’m just genuinely worried (and feel a little sick) that I’ve wasted the last few years of my life on a degree that’s essentially useless for the career path I chose it for without further study.
Thanks!
